WELCOME 14

S

August

chools have well and truly broken up for the holidays and the BBQs are in full swing! On top of this, we have a brandnew edition of OM!

We have one business profile, some delicious cocktail recipes, two restaurant reviews and a few insightful editorials in this August edition. We hear from Chris Reilly, business owner of Signs Express Plymouth to find out more about the company and what changes will happen after he retires this September. We also spoke to the team to learn more about the government Kickstart Scheme that has been giving young people the opportunity to work in companies such as Signs Express. Plymouth Gin created three fresh, summery cocktails for you to try at home. They were made in the Refectory Bar in the distillery and can be ordered at the bar too! Thinking of spending a weekend somewhere idyllic with a glass of champagne? I’ve got you covered. I have found my favourite local romantic retreats because you don’t need to travel hundreds of miles to be able to call it a holiday.

10

We hope you have a wonderful August.

BEAUTIFUL GARDENS Gardening tips and landscaping trends.

W

e always mention how gardens are an integral part of the home if you’re lucky enough to own one, therefore, it’s important not to neglect it or simply ‘put up’ with it. We have gathered together some useful tips for planting, sowing and landscaping your garden for the winter into spring.

hardy flower than can be sown now, ready for spring.

Prune and deadhead any dead flowers and plants. Cut back roses that have finished flowering for the year to make room for new growth in spring and to keep it looking tidy. Pay attention to hanging baskets – deadheading, watering and feeding helps them through autumn.

Man For All Seasons are your local gardening experts and will help to create a garden that you’ll want to spend time in. They will of course be around in spring if you fancy waiting for the perfect time to sow seeds and create a summer ready garden. Not only do they help you decide what to plant where, they are also experienced landscapers who aim to give you a garden that you can be proud of.

What to sow in August?

As the summer begins to fall away from us, we are left wondering if we can plant anything else but the answer is yes, you can! August is actually the best time of year to prepare your garden for the next blossom. I always think the common garden looks a little sad in the winter months which is completely normal however, there are some great plants to sow that will look fantastic all year round. Winter flowering pansies add a lovely dash of colour to your garden in the colder months and can be sown now. You can also plant violas and primroses now or in early spring depending on if you want them to flower in winter or summer. You want to be looking at planting ‘hardy’ plants and flowers during August and September so that they last over Winter to give you gorgeous flowers in spring. Pot marigolds are a 8

omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

Some other great plants to sow now are Calendula, Nigella, Cerinthe, Papaver, Aquilegia and hardy geraniums. You can also plant some bulbs like daffodils, colchicum and madonna lilies.

Garden Design

Due to the recent worries on climate change, the pandemic and the costof-living crisis, it has made us think very differently on where our things come from. Some fruit and veg is often shipped thousands of miles to get to our plates and does more harm than good to our planet. Lots more people are trying to find out what they can successfully grow from their own back garden which is shaping how our gardens are looking and what is trending. We are also becoming more considerate about nature and protecting wildlife therefore more patches of wildflowers and slightly overgrown patches are appearing. All animals play a role in our food chain but we are all aware that bees

are up there with the most important. Planting lavender, sunflowers, foxglove etc will all help to attract more bees. Our gardens are naturally becoming more of a sanctuary for wildlife which is amazing to see, but that doesn’t mean we can’t create space for our own gardening pursuits. Working out what to prioritise, especially if you have a small garden, is tricky, but Man For All Seasons can help you decide what will bring you the most amount of versatility.

Fences

Fences are often under appreciated in their value and often become neglected. Fencing wraps around your entire garden so it’s important to create a nice backdrop to allow your plants to stand out. ColourFence Plymouth has a huge range of metal garden fences that stand the test of time. The colours they offer are endless so that it will compliment your garden aesthetic. We hope you enjoy the last few months of summer in your garden.

A SUMMER HEATWAVE! I

seemed to have picked the UK’s hottest day in history to sit down and write this article, and although at the time this goes to print or you are reading this latest edition, the heat wave might already seem like a distant memory. As I reflect on what I want to say about what Keane & Parker has been up to for the last month and where I think the market is going, it occurred to me that much like the weather, the property market can itself be unpredictable, hot, a bit average and sometimes really cold! Over the last month we have been really busy, lots of our sales have been pushing hard to get completed in time for the summer holidays with many families choosing to move before their children return to school in September so they can be settled as we head into Autumn and beyond. Traditionally, we see a peak in new instructions to the market in September and October with homeowners already thinking about the following year and where they want to live, and we can’t see any reason why this won’t be the same this year and we are encouraging owners to act sooner this year if they wish to maximise the buoyancy we have experienced in the market.

prices, which in turn has led to less stock being available, rent values have most certainly increased due to this. At Keane & Parker, we aim to offer the right advise to any homeowner

looking to sell or rent their property, and being able to offer honest and straight forward advice that is in tune with the current market is paramount to our success. We offer free market appraisals to anyone needing advice, which are without any obligation, and you are welcome to contact the office and arrange a time for me to personally visit your home by...

Signs are often overlooked and taken for granted but the truth of the matter is, that you would be completely lost without them. Signs not only tell you where you are and where you want to go, but they are also vital components for branding and advertising your business to the world. Due to the important role that signage plays in the modern world, it’s important to choose the very best company to construct the perfect signs for your desired purpose. Signs Express consistently produce high-quality signs with experienced staff and exceptional service across the UK which convinced Chris Reilly to trust the franchise and therefore open Signs Express Plymouth. After 25 years of dedication and passion, Chris has made the decision to retire, leaving the business in the very capable hands of Simon and the team.

T

he Royal Navy was the route Chris naturally took after leaving school at the sprightly age of 17. Within the Royal Navy, Chris worked as a Submariner which involved various engineering and mechanical pursuits. When in 1997, on reaching 40, he took his service retirement and thought about what he was going to do with his life. While not wanting to leave Plymouth, which is a great city and a fantastic place to live. Becoming his own boss was something he was certain of but changing his career path at this age left him a little bit lost. Investing in a franchise is often thought a more secure route for business owners and Signs Express soon became the ideal option for Chris. Well organised, reputable, professional with a slight link to the engineering side of his late career in the Royal Navy, it was all lining up perfectly for Chris. Moving into Wolseley Business Park and securing his first client, Vospers, the business grew significantly over the years which led him to hire more enthusiastic team members, all motivated to learn the craft. Simon is the longest working team member after Chris, of 15 years which naturally means that when Chris retires, Simon will take over his role and look after the business. Due to the positive working environment and friendly people, the average time a team member stays at Signs Express Plymouth is at least 10 years, this is double the UK average! 14

omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

Due to the changes in the team, everyone is moving up a job role which leaves room for a few new starters to join the team. In June 2021, Signs Express entered into the ‘Kickstart Scheme’ – a new government-funded scheme to assist young people claiming Universal credit, aged 18-25, into employment. Under this scheme, businesses are funded to take on a young person in a job role for a 6-month placement. During this time, the young person is trained and given the opportunity to showcase their skills and practicality within the work environment. After the 6-month period ends, there is a prospect for the young person to be offered a permanent position within the company. The most recent Signs Express Plymouth’s success story with Kickstart

Meet the team

Simon (left) Chris (right) begins in June 2021 when they opened themselves up to taking on Georgia under the role of Sales and Marketing Administrative Assistant. Georgia grew in confidence and excelled at any task given to her, she also displayed outstanding communication skills as well as producing engaging content for their social media. 13 months later and Georgia is a valued member of the Signs Express Plymouth team. Their second success story came in January 2022, 7 months after taking on their first trainee Georgia. With the end of Chris’ full-time career in sight, they decided it was time to expand the team again, this time, they were on the lookout for a ‘Trainee Sign Maker’. In this role, Jake was able to display his knowledge and functionality of

a change of colour. The ‘Colour Change’ wrap lasts for up to 10 years. This ‘Wrap’ adds as protective layer of vinyl material to the vehicle whilst protecting the paint underneath.

Georgia manufacturing various products using a range of materials and equipment. During Jake’s time as a trainee, he gelled with the other team members and proved his ability to carry out work to a high standard whilst displaying enjoyment of working to the pace of their ever-expanding clientele. As of August 2022, Jake will become an official member of the team, therefore another great success as a result of the Kickstart Scheme. Unfortunately, the Kickstart Scheme is no longer available to young people however, Georgia found the ‘Movement to Work’ course exceptionally helpful in leading her in the direction of the Kickstart Scheme. With the arrival of the new team members, they currently have 8, including Chris’ wife Vida who helped in the early days of the business and covers the accounts. We also must not forget Steve and Sam being important and highly valued members of the team in production and installation. Steve and Sam are both highly skilled, with lots of experience within our industry. Chris likes to focus on their main products and do them to the best standard which requires a skilled team. The team and the training are where Chris has focused on which has proven to be successful due to their long-standing colleagues and client satisfaction. Among the most popular products requested by clients is vehicle graphics and wraps. Vehicle graphics are constantly visible to the public which means it’s the most efficient way to get your business noticed. Signs Express can not only apply printed logos and graphics onto vehicles, but they can also wrap them, if you fancy

There are many colours and finishes to choose from, for example Carbon Fibre, Chrome, Gloss, and Metallic Matt, only the highest quality materials are used here which means they have great product longevity and customer satisfaction. You may be asking, ‘Why don’t you just get it sprayed?’ On average, spraying may be more expensive than having your vehicle wrapped by Signs Express, but there is the advantage of being able to ‘Unwrap’ the vehicle at a later date to reveal pristine paintwork underneath. Chris has recently had his VW transporter halfwrapped in Metallic Matt Iridescent Blue which looks amazing.

ensure the job is done correctly and efficiently. Communication is a big part of their success, they like to be realistic with the client, informing them every step of the way whilst ensuring they are happy with the final product. Efficiency begins with the initial call or email where they will produce a quote for your business within less than 24 hours. Once that’s completed, they will proceed to the next steps within a matter of days, working alongside the client at all times. With Chris’ leaving date set for the end of September 2022, he can rest assured knowing that the business that he put 25 years of hard work into will be in safe hands. He tells us that he will miss the wonderful team and customers that he had the honour of working with and alongside for many years.

Your first point of contact when calling or emailing Signs Express Plymouth is Georgia who then works closely alongside Ian, who undertakes a sales liaison /surveyor role. Ian will take the clients to the next step of the process and will often take the time to meet clients face-to-face. This is often highly appreciated and goes a long way to

Chris also tells us, ‘Simon together with his wife Tracy will make a success of it I am certain’. With plans to naturally expand their business clientele, they will assess a further team expansion. However, they are currently ready to take on new work with their current strong and capable team.

Jake

It won’t be goodbye for Chris as he will always be available should they need any help but it is clear to us that the team are confident in doing Chris proud and maintaining the success of Signs Express Plymouth.

Photography by Tom Coles The annual British Firework Championships have been displaying their beautiful firework displays in Plymouth since 1997. We found out more about this year’s competition and where best to watch it.

T

his year, the British Firework Championships are being held on Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th August in our very own Ocean City. The fireworks will be let off on the Mountbatten breakwater creating a safe stage for the large-scale pyrotechnics. The natural curvature of Plymouths coastline creates an amphitheatre of endless viewing platforms which enables everyone to have a decent view of the display.

previous years, the event does get fairly busy and although social distancing guidelines have been relaxed, it is still important to be careful when in large crowds. The Hoe is located in a prime viewing spot therefore all of the entertainment will pop up on the Hoe and the promenade. There will be a whole host of fun happening on the Hoe with a funfair, live music from Heart FM and some delicious food stalls!

The annual event celebrates six professional display companies as they compete to win the crowd and the judges’ favour! Three teams will compete on both evenings with a performance and then the winner is announced at the end of the competition. Every sixth year, the championof-champions takes place, where the winners from the five previous years go head-to-head and battle it out to be crowned the champion-of-champions!

The teams taking part are: Europla Displays – 17th Nemisis Pyrotechnics – 17th Phoenix Fireworks – 17th Fully Fused Fireworks – 18th Sonic Fireworks – 18th Wizard Fireworks – 18th The first display on each evening will take place at 9:30pm and each display will last exactly 10 minutes with a tenminute gap between each show. Due to the competition’s popularity, it is now recognised as the premier annual display in the UK which has done wonders for the city by attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year. The busy nature of the event may cause some disruption on the roads therefore, our best advice is to use Plymouth’s Park and Ride facilities to enter the city if you are coming to watch from further afield. seafood RECIPES

We are so lucky to be situated on the South coast with an abundance of local fish and shellfish on offer. Try using some in a recipe this month.

Spaghetti with lemon, prawns and parmesan Serves - 4

Ingredients • 400 grams dried spaghetti • 400 grams raw, peeled prawns • zest and juice 2 lemons • 4 tablespoons olive oil • 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 1 long red chilli, seeded and finely chopped • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley • 2 spring onions, thinly sliced • sea salt and ground pepper

1 2

Put the lemon zest and juice, olive oil, Parmesan and garlic in a bowl and whisk together. It will look grainy. Add half the chopped chilli and half the parsley, a pinch of salt and a good grind of pepper. Set aside. Cook the spaghetti in boiling salted water until al dente, adding the raw prawns for the last 2 minutes of cooking. Remove a ¼ cup of the cooking water then drain the spaghetti and prawns. Tip back into the saucepan then add the lemon mixture and the reserved water and stir everything together.

3 1

Coconut Fish Curry Serves - 4

Ingredients

• 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 1 onion, finely chopped • thumb-sized piece ginger, finely grated • 3 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 tsp shrimp paste • 1 small red chilli, shredded (deseeded if you don’t like it too hot) • 2 lemongrass stalks, split, then bruised with a rolling pin • 1 heaped tbsp medium curry powder • 1 heaped tbsp light muscovado sugar • small bunch coriander, stems finely chopped • 400g can coconut milk • 450g skinless hake fillets, cut into rectangles, roughly credit card size • 220g pack frozen raw whole prawns • 1 lime, halved • cooked rice, to serve

30

omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

Divide the pasta and prawns between warm bowls and top with the remaining chilli, parsley and the spring onions. Pass extra Parmesan for grating if desired.

Heat the oil in a wide, lidded frying pan, then soften the onion for 5 mins. Increase the heat a little, stir in the ginger, garlic, shrimp paste, chilli and lemongrass, and cook for 2 mins. Add the curry powder and sugar, and keep stirring. When the sugar starts to melt and everything starts to clump together, add the coriander stems, coconut milk and 2 tbsp water, then bring to a simmer.

2

Add the fish to the sauce, tuck the prawns in here and there, then squeeze over half the lime. Pop on the lid and simmer for 5 mins more or until the hake is just cooked and flaking, and the prawns are pink through. Taste for seasoning, adding a squeeze more lime to the sauce if you like. Scatter over the coriander leaves and serve with rice.

OM RECOMMENDS: Bengal Flavour

B

engal Flavour, situated within the historic Barbican serves an array of aromatic curries, nan breads, samosas and papadum chutney trays. The OM team were delighted to be invited to a meal at Bengal Flavour last month to taste the menu, meet the staff and give our honest review. The 18th century building is located on Buckwell Street and is one of Plymouth’s most historic buildings. The street is named after the old medieval Buck Well which is situated within the restaurant opposite the bar. There have even been rumours, sightings and noises of the ghost who lives in the building. Just a stones throw away from the cobbled streets of the Barbican and the Hoe, Bengal Flavour is in a superb location. The restaurant was lovely and quiet when we arrived due to the time of day which enabled us to take our time, get to know the staff and fully enjoy the food. We were greeted and shown to our seats by Mr Ali, owner of both Bengal Flavour and the award-winning Shapla Balti Cuisine in Plympton. Having not long ago experienced a delightful meal at Shapla Balti Cuisine, we were very excited to see what Bengal Flavour had to offer. As soon as we arrived, a drinks menu was brought out followed by a waiter who was ready to take our order. Myles, the Managing Director and Edward, the Sales Manager ordered a Cobra beer and I chose (a large glass) of the house white wine which was

crisp and cold. Emma, the Accounts Manager shared some water with the rest of us. The main menu was brought out along with a tray of chutneys, yoghurts and onion salad next to a heap of papadums to tuck into. Now you can either dip the papadums into each tray one at a time, or you can pile all of the sauces onto the papadum and eat them all together. You can guess how we liked to do it! We all got a little distracted by the chutney tray and forgot to look at the menu. Eventually, we decided to share a starter which consisted of chicken and lamb tikka on a bed of salad with vegetable samosas. Emma and Edward shared the samosas whilst Myles and I tried the tikka. The flavours from the tikka were sublime, a slight hint of spice but not too overpowering. The samosas were crispy and packed full of curried vegetables. After ordering our mains, it was soon brought out on a cart and then placed in front of us. We had ordered a lot of food which filled the table with vibrant colours and a beautiful smell. Emma is vegan so she wanted to try the Vegetable Dansak with Vegetable rice. She found the curry to be sweet and full of flavour which complimented the rice perfectly. Edward ordered the Bengal Special Vegetable which had a variety of vegetables coated in a rich tomato and garlic curried sauce. Myles opted for a Chicken Bhuna which was served beautifully with ginger and red onion slices on top for extra colour and flavour. He chose Fried Rice to go alongside the curry and he told me it tasted fresh, aromatic with just the right amount of spice. I was less adventurous and opted for the classic Chicken Korma with Pilau Rice but I was not disappointed. The creamy coconut curry

complimented the Pilau Rice perfectly. The chicken was tender and the The Buck Well sauce was sweet and I chose to accompany this dish with a garlic nan bread. Myles chose the Mos Mos Nan which consisted of mincemeat inside and topped with garlic and Edward had the cheese nan. After all of this food, we had full bellies and some leftovers that we took home with us, ready to dig into the next day. Our experience at Bengal Flavour was absolutely brilliant. We couldn’t thank the waiters enough for being so attentive and lovely to talk to. The food was truly sublime and we had no issues with any of the dishes. You can tell as soon as you walk into Bengal Flavour that they care about your experience and also the food that they are cooking you. It’s all fresh and cooked to order which plays a huge part in the enjoyment of the meal. We hope to be returning very soon.

EATING & DRINKING

OM RECOMMENDS:

The Hook & Line: Royal William Yard

T

he Hook & Line, located within the bustling area of the Royal William Yard serves a delicious variety of locally caught fresh fish, seafood with veggie and vegan options. The team at OM were kindly invited to a meal at the Hook & Line last month to sample their menu and experience the restaurant for ourselves. Situated in Plymouth’s waterfront destination of Royal William Yard, The Hook & Line is immediately in a prime location. The Yard can be reached by car, foot, bus or even boat from The Barbican or Cornwall. An easy escape from the bustling city centre to experience great food and drink in a picturesque, romantic setting. We were fortunate enough to experience the restaurant at one of its quietest times of day which meant we could appreciate the interior to its fullest. As we walked into the restaurant, you immediately notice the natural industrial feel of the Royal William Yard which has remained untouched and enhanced through their choice of furnishings. The original floors, brick walls and high beamed ceilings offer the perfect backdrop for the sustainably sourced wooden tables and upcycled lighting. The bar area is backlit by neon signs which light up the array of spirit and alcohol bottles on offer. Through the door frame to your left is the kitchen where you can watch the chefs cook and plate up their divine dishes. We were seated by the owner and founder of The hook & Line, Steve Page, who kindly offered us the biggest

table in the restaurant. Our waitress for the evening was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. As it was Bring Your Dog to Work Day, we made sure Bella, Stevie and Shiloh, our office dogs, got to experience the restaurant too. They brought the dogs a water bowl without hesitation along with a tailored dog menu which they were, of course, over the moon about. As we found our seats, the main menu was brought out along with an extensive cocktail and drinks menu. This was the tricky part, choosing what to order! Drinks first, I was the designated driver, so I opted for a watermelon Mockito (Mojito non-alcoholic cocktail) which was by far the best one I have ever tasted. Myles, our Managing Director, Edward, our Sales Manager and Emma our Accounts Manager all went for their signature IPA, called Hook, Line & Sinker. Food next, we decided to share some starters which consisted of artisan bread & mixed marinated olives as we didn’t want to ruin our appetites for the main dishes. When I tell you, this was the best toasted artisan bread with olive oil dips I have ever eaten, I am not lying! Myles wanted to try the fish & chips which arrived beautifully presented with tartare sauce and mushy peas. The fish was delicate and flaky, and the batter was light and perfectly seasoned. I heard raving reviews about their fish tacos before visiting so I had to see what they were all about. I ordered these with a portion of sweet potato fries which arrived on a waved rack with each taco placed inbetween the waves. The flavours of these tacos were delicious,

well balanced and fresh with guacamole and soured cream drizzled on top. Emma was delighted to find out they offer vegan options so she chose the vegan fish & chips, and she couldn’t believe that it wasn’t fish. They had apparently worked on getting their vegan fish just right for months before adding it to their menu, so they are very confident in it. On their ‘Set Sail’ menu, there are halloumi skewers consisting of grilled halloumi, red peppers, pineapple and chili jam. Edward opted for this which he thought were sweet, full of flavour and the halloumi was perfectly grilled. Steve kindly brought out a bottle of Bollinger for us all to share which went down a treat. No meal is complete without dessert! Edward and I chose the chocolate brownie, which was gooey, rich and indulgent. Myles ordered the chocolate mousse which was light and airy, and Emma opted for the vegan chocolate tart served with a vegan coconut ice cream. Our experience at The Hook & Line was one we would love to repeat again very soon. With great food, a sustainable attitude and an independent, local spin on the Royal William Yard, this restaurant has everything you could wish for.
