We caught up with the Dream Doors Plymouth business owner, David Ward, to find out more about the highly reputable kitchen makeover company and the changes they have made since opening their doors in May 2019.

s we are well aware, kitchens don’t come cheap, but before deciding to rip out your old kitchen and starting from scratch, have you ever considered just changing the doors, and or the worktops to reduce the cost?

The Dream Doors franchise has been successfully transforming Britain’s kitchens since 1999, with 100 showrooms across the UK and over 92,000 installations completed. They are currently the No. 1 kitchen makeover company in the UK which can be proved by their constant positive reviews on Checkatrade. The company are passionate about putting the customer ahead of profit by offering affordable solutions from top quality makeovers to full replacement kitchens.

Many people often think they need to buy a whole new kitchen to make a big transformation. However, by making small changes such as updating the cupboard doors, changing worktops, replacing the tiles and even adding in some under cabinet lighting, can make a huge difference and save you thousands of pounds.

The team operate with two principal carpenters and David who manages the team and does the planning and design work, meaning they only undertake two jobs at any given time to maintain the quality of their service. They also have likeminded gas engineers and electricians as required, it’s a small and highly focused team. David visits every single job during the process to make sure the same quality of work is applied throughout.

David tells us that good tradespeople are few and far between, they had trialled a few over time and David has been very selective of who he wants working for him. A small team doesn’t necessarily mean an unsuccessful business, in fact, it can mean quite the opposite. Dream Doors Plymouth want nothing more than happy customers which comes from great customer service throughout the process and a high-quality finish on the kitchen.

Future growth will inevitably follow on given their excellent customer reviews and word of mouth compliments.

Not only is Dream Doors a cost-effective way of transforming a kitchen, but it is also more environmentally friendly as opposed to buying a brand-new kitchen because less material is required, and less waste goes to landfills.

The turnaround for jobs is entirely dependent on what needs to be done.

David is passionate about helping the community and is keen to help other local charities as the pandemic lifts.

Quite surprisingly, David is not overly focused on the growth of the company.

In his own words ‘growth will come naturally; my focus is to look after my customers and my team. We want to finish 2022 with consistent 10/10 reviews from our customers’.

Chris Warne, a once young entrepreneur, fascinated by the renowned artist Robert Lenkiewicz painting on the cobbled streets of Plymouth is now the owner of the Kaya Gallery and has recently been awarded the hashtag #thepeoplesgallery. Through years of discovery, Chris has found his calling in life and realises that he wants nothing more than to cherish every moment with his family, surround himself with what he loves and be a helping hand to others within the community he grew up in.

aya Gallery has been selling artwork on the historic Southside Street for almost 14 years, but it wasn’t until 2017 when the Warne family decided to take it over from its previous owner. Prior to the ownership of Kaya Gallery, Chris had an interesting few years leading up to this which taught him a thing or two about the importance of life.

After leaving school with a total of one qualification, Chris went to work at the dockyard when he was just 15 years old.

At the time, Robert Lenkiewicz was at the height of his career and would always leave his studio door open for aspiring artists to pop in, watch him paint and speak to him. Chris enjoyed spending time in Lenkiewicz’s studio, sharing conversations about other painters and beliefs they both shared an alikeness with.

Lenkiewicz was a larger-than-life individual who liked to keep life interesting. When the artist was short of some change to pay off the bills, he would be seen painting quick portraits for £3-£5 on the street where his mural currently stands.

At the enthusiastic age of 23, Chris set up his own copier and fax company supplying photo copiers, fax machines and office equipment which he named ‘The Copier and Fax Co.’ He was able to help supply Lenkiewicz with printers and equipment that he needed for his artwork.

The company grew considerably through acquisitions between 1994-’96 where they retained 6 offices across the SouthWest.

Wanting to grow the business, Chris became a serious businessman and a workaholic.

A pivotal point in his life was the birth of their daughter Beth. The precious new life meant more to Chris than anything in the world and within that moment, he realised that being a father was all he wanted to focus on. He took 13 weeks out of his business to help raise Beth and try to provide his family with all they could wish for. So, he entrusted his business to the other directors.

Chris decided that for the 13 weeks, that he was happier being ‘The Family Man’ than a businessman, so offered The Copier and Fax Co. to the other directors who then took up the challenge of running and owning the successful company. So that was it, Chris was now a full-time Dad.

With the successful blueprint of parenting Beth, Chris decided to take another three years off work to nurture their youngest son, Aiden when he was born.

Chris has always offered a helping hand, especially with the young people in the community. He volunteered at Nor Pro Training Trust to help young people get into apprenticeships and eventually became the managing director. He believes very strongly that apprenticeships are becoming too difficult to get into and are constantly moving away from their primary objective which was to help young people get into a career who may not have been smart enough for alternative higher education.

Exhausted with the system, Chris took his case to parliament whereby he tried to persuade his thoughts on apprenticeships however, as much as they would have liked to, the board couldn’t help him change the system.

Still keen to help out the young people in the community, Chris had recently spoken to a young man who helped fix his car in the past and he was struggling to get onto an apprenticeship due to his dyslexia. With Chris’ respectable position as managing director of Nor Pro Training Trust, he convinced the exam board to help the young man get the grades he needed by hiring a writer to transcribe for him.

When Beth was 6 years old, Chris decided that he needed to be more secure and became a director of the West Alarms business which Chris and Steve built to another successful business, servicing alarms all over the country. After some time, Steve wanted to go it alone and bought Chris’ shares.

With his diminishing finances on his mind whilst Chris was full-time parenting, after the three years had passed, he decided that it was time to buy The Copier and Fax Co. back. However, it was not to be and he finally had to move onto something else, a new challenge.

He was working for Nor Pro Training Trust for 6 years until he swapped his job to help look after the Kaya Gallery with the previous owner.

Kaya Gallery is currently manned by Diane and Beth who love the gallery.

Health & Leisure You will always notice Chris either in the gallery chatting about Robert Lenkiewicz or any of the artists’ work on display, speaking to the customers with a warm welcome, or finding out what the local bakeries and cafes have to offer.

The amazing work that Chris and the Kaya Gallery team do for the community doesn’t stop there. They sponsor 22 small, local football teams for Drake Football Club, one of which, Aiden plays for. This makes us the official sponsor for Drake Youth Football Club They also sponsor the local boxing scene, Devonport Amateur Boxing Club who Beth fights for and has the kaya gallery logo printed on her boxing dressing gown. They also sponsor a local darts player, and help out with local schools, often getting Brian Pollard, a well-known local artist, to come in and talk about his art to the children.

After spending so much quality time with his children, Chris has built a tight bond with Beth and Aiden that he is so proud of. He has been able to watch Beth win two British Championships in boxing and cheer on Aiden as he won the Plymouth Grand Prix in go-karting, after only going three times before.

The galleries moto is ‘Family first, business a very close second so after his family, comes his love for art. Chris has always enjoyed collecting art and enjoys looking at paintings from L S Lowry, Brian Pollard, Rembrandt and of course, Lenkiewicz. He doesn’t have a particular style that he likes the most which is why he has grown his gallery into ‘The People’s Gallery’. A gallery for everyone.

There really is something for everyone with a range of different artists styles, prices and sizes. They exhibit all types of art from oil paintings and surrealist photography to glasswork and illustrations of Plymouth.

They have recently been awarded the hashtag #thepeoplesgallery due to their vast range of artwork available for everyone to purchase.

Often when you enter art galleries, they can feel very exclusive and unfriendly, but with Chris and his families cheerful and warm welcome and the affordable range of artwork on the walls, the stigma is soon left at the door.

£3.50 up to the most expensive piece selling for £54,000 painted by Robert Lenkiewicz himself. The single most popular piece they sell is The Beatles poster which can be framed and glazed for just £65. The two most popular artists work sold at the gallery is Brian Pollard and Robert Lenkiewicz, all with varying prices. They exhibit a lot of local artists currently and will accept more depending on if Diane and Chris like the artwork and if they think it will sell. They would love to exhibit all local artists, but they just don’t have the space available at this time but it is always worth asking!

The gallery is popular with tourists seeking out artwork of the local area as well as locals popping in for a chat with the friendly Warne family and spotting a deal to be done. They are also dog friendly and have made the gallery floor wheelchair and walking frame friendly.

Everyone is welcome.

Back in July 2021, they had a Brian Pollard solo exhibition where they kitted out the gallery with the famous work of Brian Pollard for visitors to purchase. It was an amazing exhibition with Brian Pollard also coming in to pick out the lucky winner of his original painting!

You are able to order artwork from their Facebook shop which can be found in the details below. On the Facebook shop, you can browse the artwork and then give them a message or a call to reserve or order the piece. The artwork can either be delivered to your address or you can pick it up in the gallery for no extra cost.

Although Chris thoroughly enjoys looking at the art and watching artwork being sold to happy customers, his favourite part about being in the Kaya Gallery is the people. He is able to connect with hundreds of people every day and listen

Robert Lenkiewicz’s artwork to their stories which makes him feel a part of something special. Situated on the bustling Southside Street on the Barbican, they are never short of that uplifting energy brought by the people.

In these interviews, we always ask where they’d like to see themselves and the business in 5 years’ time to which Chris replied, ‘I’ll still be here, I love it here!’

They are looking to possibly expand the building behind the gallery and making it a dedicated space for photography however, the building is grade 1 listed and it requires some TLC to restore it into a functional gallery space. Other than that, they are so happy with how it is now, and all they ask of their amazing customers is to keep coming in and supporting our business, even if just for a chat. Chris also says that he is always available should you want to go for some coffee, cake and a chat! (Chris’ favourite hobby.)

Chris’ noticeable family bond and his passion for the community has meant he has become a friendly and familiar face in Plymouth. The family owned gallery is renowned to be one of the best and most varied stockists of art in Plymouth which is how the Warne family would like for it to continue years down the line.

Spooktacular thrills and frighteningly good fun is on offer at top family attraction, Camel Creek Adventure Park (near Wadebridge, Cornwall), this Halloween with a whole week of tricks, treats and scary surprises .

F

rom 23rd to 31st October, mini ghosts and ghouls can step back in time on a Haunted Trail and come face-to-face with hair-raising characters from the Bodmin Beast to Cornish sea serpent, Morgawr. In the spooky graveyard, there’s bones ready for excavation and only the brave will discover what lurks in the darkness of the grotto.

Throughout the hair-raising Halloweek, bold adventurers can also visit Camel Creek’s scariest residents at the Reptile House and Crocodile Corner and face their fears in the House of Horrors Scare Zone.

A specially created Trick or Treat game will be available to visitors of all ages at the park’s show area – but be warned, knock on one of the doors and you might get a surprise with the yuck factor! HAUNTING STORIES OF PLYMOUTH & DARTMOOR

Halloween is fast approaching and it’s around this time where the ghost stories, myths and legends come out of hiding. We have found the most chilling tales from Plymouth and Dartmoor and if you’re looking for some frightening festive fun, why not explore the haunting locations yourself.

Royal William Yard Royal William Yard is now known as a much-loved waterfront destination, but it has a long and fascinating history.

One of the most important groups of historic military buildings in Britain and the largest collection of Grade I Listed military buildings in Europe, there are echoes of the past around every corner.

Constructed in 1825, the Yard provided provisions for the Navy and was a hive of activity for many years before it fell into disrepair and became derelict. Slowly and sensitively regenerated since 2004, every effort has been made to respect and restore the original features that are so integral the Yard’s atmosphere. So, even while you enjoy a very modern setting, you are surrounded by history and can’t help but be aware of it.

Over the years, many spooky stories have been told about Royal William Yard. As a former victualling yard with a slaughterhouse, rumour has it that you can hear cattle hooves echoing along the cobbled floor. Other tales tell of ghostly figures, glanced at through windows, of men in Naval and Police uniforms. And there are reports of heavy doors opening and closing by themselves, and the distant noise of footsteps and clothes rustling as if the people who originally made this a busy and bustling place, continue to play their part.

THE O BROOK DRAGON Way back in the days of errant knights and distressed damsels the valley was home to a fierce dragon whose reputation spread far and wide. Hard moormen who feared nought would walk several miles out of their way just to avoid this valley of dread, even the tinners feared to set pick to rock. This particular dragon had no name because all the folk of the area feared to even mention its name, they would simply shudder at any mention of the Wo Brook. Any sheep or cow that was tempted to graze on the lush grasses of the valley soon became a meal for this ferocious beast. Over the years the local farmers lost count of the animals they lost to the dragon, estimates of the time ranged from hundreds to thousands, either way it cost them dear. Livestock was one thing but the dragon also had a penchant for human flesh and many a lonesome traveller met his fate in the Valley of the Wo Brook.

The dragon lived in the ancient ruins of a dwelling place of the Men of Bronze, in fact it made its home in the largest of the old settlement. The walls stood high and the beast could often be seen perched upon them, his blood red eyes eagerly scanning the moor for an easy meal, two legs or four it wasn’t fussy. People often ask why some brave man of the moor never ventured into the Valley of the Wo and slew the monster. This simple answer is that they did venture into the valley but legend never recalled the eventual fate of the dragon. Clearly something happened because there is no sign of claw nor scale of the beast today, maybe the truth was too awful to recount.

THE TOAD WOMAN OF NORTH BOVEY The Toad Woman’ lived in a small, tumble-down cottage on the edge of the village and she was always known as ‘Widow Ann’. Depending on how well people got on with her she was either regarded as a hedge witch or a black witch. In desperate times the villagers would seek her help but only as a last resort, their desperation would overcome the dreaded fear in which she was held.

Down through the ages scholars have searched for the answer but nothing is to be found except for one theory: The moorfolk went into the Valley of the Wo and caught the dragon, bound him from head to claw and, “draw’d ‘n in the Dart”.

THE HEADLESS HORSE Once a powerful man, in no way likely to be daunted by spectres, ventured to traverse the bye lane which leads up to the high moor. In those days this was no mean feat due to the character of this lane.So lighting his lantern at the turn-pike gate, he valiantly sallied forth. He had proceeded but half way when lo! he heard behind him the rapid steps of a horse: at first he took no notice of this – presently, however, a horse’s head appeared over his shoulder. He stretched out his hand to turn the animal away, and where he plainly saw the head, grasped only thin air.

At the same moment, his light was suddenly extinguished without any apparent cause, for there was not a breath of wind stirring; then the stout man’s heart began to fail. He hastened his steps, when the horse which was still pursuing him, to add to his dismay, snorted in the most horrific manner: now indeed he gave himself over for lost. Pale, breathless, and half dead, he reached the hospitable door of a cott, and tottering to a chair, told his direful adventures, declaring that, for all the gold in the Indies, he would not venture a step further alone. The lane where the phantom horse was seen is still held in bad repute; and many of our younger neighbours, would go miles around rather than come through it after dark. One young man gravely asserted the other day, that he had

It was a known fact that Widow Ann practiced the black arts and should the mood take her she could conjure up a cure for most ailments but always at a price. Some say that they have seen warts shrivel up and disappear at the very sight of the old woman, others will tell of how Widow Ann knew many spells, cures and curses all of which she would use when she thought fit. of her potion will cure toothache faster than the blink of an eye. On the other hand many villagers can point the finger and relate how sudden misfortunes have blighted their lives at a time coinciding with them getting on the wrong side of Widow Ann. Widow Ann knew many spells, cures and curses all of which she would use when she thought fit. But, she always needed help and that assistance could be found living in a steen which stood on her dresser. In addition to the toads, Ann needed two other unlikely aids in her witchcraft, one was of all things a bible and the other being her door key. Again we are fortunate enough to know exactly how bible and toads we used in the black arts. Seemingly when a particular spell or curse needed to be cast she would first take the bible and place the door key inside the pages as if it were sitting in a lock then tightly tie a length of cord around the book. Then the old woman would lift the bible by the handle of the key and place it edgewise on the table, if the holy book remained still then she knew the powers of darkness were not strong enough to cast her spell. However, if the bible turned around this was the signal that her powers were strong enough to complete her mischief. At this point the steen was fetched from the dresser and the toads released, then the fun began, with the warty amphibians croaking and hopping over the good book the magic was made. All that is known is that the old woman could be heard chanting along with the guttural croaking of the toads.

The traditional German folk festival is coming to Central Park this October with a whole host of bier, food and music! There will be a large selection of vendors offering delicious traditional German food, hot and cold as well as a whopping 30,000 litres of bier. There will be a variety of different bands playing to fill the park with Bavarian sounds and our widley regarded Oompah bands will be performing. Tickets are available to purchase on their website www.oktoberfestplymouth.co.uk where they are priced at £15 for the Friday and £20 for the Saturday. There is an option to have VIP treatment with a reserved VIP table for 10 guests priced between £300 £350 + booking fee.

In aid of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, The Tour De Moor cycling challenge returns to the wilderness of Dartmoor. Hop on your bike and take the 52km adrenalin-packed adventure to raise money for people with progessive life-limiting illnesses. The main cycle trail is for those aged 12 and above, however, children 9 years and above can get involved in the 30km challenge riding over rough terrain and through woodland.

There is also a ‘mini moor’, a gentle 11km ride along the tarmac paths, suitable for the whole family to take part in. To take part in the Tour De Moor, head to www.stlukeshospice.org.uk and register your interest.

The 15 Halloween themed characters will be dotted around the city in shop windows, your mission if you choose to accept it, is to locate all 15 characters to be in with a chance of winning £100 to spend in Waterstones. Pip’s pick your own Kitley Farm, Yealmpton From Saturday 9th October Kitley Farm will be opening its field of pumpkins to the public from Saturday 9th October for the annual pumpkin picking. It is first come first serve therefore, to avoid dissapointment, don’t wait too long to pick your pumpkin.

The farm will be open from 10am - 5pm every day until Halloween or once all the pumpkins have been sold, usually towards the end of October. No booking is required and prices will follow soon on their website and Facebook page.

NATIONAL CURRY WEEK 4th - 10th OCTOBER The nations love for curry is something that will never slow down or become unpopular which is why we have made a whole week dedicated to the delicious Indian dish that has snuck into our everyday cuisine.

I

t has commonly been said that curry is the new national dish of Britain, which comes as no surprise considering the number of curry houses are on our high streets today. As a nation, we really do love curry, so much so that the curry dish contributes to 5billion of the British economy!

Traces of curry recipes from India date back to the early 1500s and the dish eventually made its way to English cuisine in 1733 as it was served by Norris Street Coffee House in Haymarket, London.

‘Curry was yet to establish itself firmly in British cuisine. In the 1940s and 1950s, most major Indian restaurants in London employed ex-seamen from Bangladesh, particularly from Sylhet.

Many of these seamen aspired to open a restaurant of their own.

After the Second World War, they bought bombed-out chippies and cafes selling curry and rice alongside fish, pies, and chips.

They stayed open after 11 pm to catch the after-pub trade. Eating hot curry after a night out in the pub became a tradition. As customers became increasingly fond of curry, these restaurants discarded British dishes and turned into inexpensive Indian takeaways and eateries.’ – www.historic-uk.com As a nation, we love to absorb different influences and cultures, so much so that there are more Indian restaurants in Greater London than in Delhi and Mumbai combined.

The word curry originates from the Tamil word ‘Kori’ meaning a soup-like spiced sauce.

The world’s hottest curry is named The Chicken Naga, made from a lot of Naga pepper seeds which are 100 times hotter than jalapeno peppers.

Fun Fact 3 : Britain’s favourite curry is a Chicken Tikka Masala, however; the Tikka Masala is not an original Indian curry.

On the 29th of November 2021, the 17th annual British Curry Awards will take place. This event is taken very seriously with curry houses competing against each other to win the awards on offer. Much like the Oscars, there is a stage, special presenters, performances, trophies and speeches, all to be streamed online.

To get involved in National Curry Week, you could visit your local curry house and enjoy a delicious meal in Plymouth. Recruitment in Partnership Ltd was established by husband and wife team Debbie & Peter Clayton with the help of a family friend Laura Usher who helped them develop the website, creating the logo, company slogan and all other documentation ready for when they started trading in August 2017 and Laura who had previously worked in recruitment went on to become the first member of their team

ebbie and Peter decided to set up the company after spending over 35 years working for various recruitment companies during this time and realising that there was a gap in the market for a recruitment agency who weren’t driven by profit alone but one that took time to build long term, honest relationships with both the candidates and clients.

Debbie worked as a Manager for some of the top Hotel groups in the World before starting work in a London recruitment agency back in 1988 as a Recruitment Consultant learning every aspect of the business before moving back to her home town of Plymouth to join a local recruitment agency as their Manager where she stayed for many years until the sale of the agency, moving into a Directors Designate position with another local recruitment business.

Peter had a very successful career as a Commando Engineer in the British Army for over twenty years and on leaving decided to add a few more strings to his bow by taking his HGV Class 1 Licence, CPC and ADR Licence to enable him additional options for his future career on moving back to Plymouth and joined a local recruitment business running their large transport and industrial division, moving into regional management for a large on-site recruitment agency.

The couple met again and married in 2002 continuing to work together over the years until making the lifechanging decision to start their own recruitment agency, the aptly named Recruitment in Partnership.

The couple realised over the years of working for various recruitment agencies that the quality of customer and staff care was severely lacking, so in the Spring of 2016, the couple started forming ideas on how they would do it better and if they could do it by themselves. The respected and amicable pair chose the adventurous route and by August 2017, Recruitment in Partnership was formed.

One of the busiest times of year for business is Christmas which for Recruitment in Partnership starts at the beginning of October and they are expected to see a sharp rise in employment within the coming months.

Meet the team! new additions to the team started with their daughter Ria who runs their payroll, then came their granddaughter Adele (the computer whizz) who works with the larger long term clients, and they recently added two more consultants Matt and Luke who are dealing with clients and candidates old and new. Debbie and Peter have enjoyed many years building up their business and shaping it to become a caring and happy environment for all. After a busy week in the office, the couple like to retreat to their stables in Dartmoor and spend the weekend relaxing with their horses and three dogs. Debbie has always loved and worked with horses from a very young age, specifically ex- racehorses, something she has passed onto Peter and so their dream became a reality having their own stables and fields close to the moors where they can escape to the wilderness of Dartmoor and forget about the hustle and bustle of city life.

Their plans for the future of the business are to move into a bigger office in the main part of the Fort where they can expand their team of consultants and continue their success by bringing on board more clients and candidates.

In 5 years’ time, Peter is hoping he will have retired from the company and plans to spend lots of his time renovating the stables and enjoying the peace and quiet. Debbie also plans to spend more time at the yard whilst ensuring the company is well looked after for when she wishes to retire with Peter.

It was clear from speaking to Debbie and Peter and being in their office environment that the quality of care and thoughtfulness is like no other recruitment firm we’ve seen before.

Does your trust or family arrangement need to be registered with HMRC?

any family arrangements on how property is held are being caught by HMRC’s registration requirements.

If you are a trustee, beneficiary, hold property for someone else, or benefit from property held by another person, you may need to register with HMRC under the new online Trust Registration Service (TRS).

HMRC has extended their requirements for all trusts in existence on or after 6 October 2020 to register, even if they do not have a UK tax liability. There are some exceptions which are detailed in the Government guidance.

Importantly for most families, this now includes a requirement to register Declarations of Trust where the legal owners and beneficiaries differ. For example, you may hold a property under a Declaration of Trust where someone else has an interest or benefit. Or you may have another type of arrangement where someone holds property, money or other assets for the benefit of another person.

There are also obligations for the upkeep of records and information about the trust on the TRS. This is a complex area and the deadlines depend on the type of trust and whether there is any tax liability. We recommend you do not delay in looking into this as there may be financial penalties involved.

Make a difference to people living with cancer by going sober for 31 days this October.

very year, Macmillan Cancer Support set the challenge to go sober for the month of October to raise money for people living with cancer. If the whole month sounds a little too tricky, you can take on the Sober October challenge for 21 or 14 days instead. Ultimately, do whatever it takes to help people living with cancer.

Many drinkers are unaware that regularly drinking more than 14 units a week can lead to a wide range of long-term health problems, including cancer, stroke, and heart attack. Drinking 14 units of alcohol works out to be roughly 6 pints of beer or 7 glasses of wine. Cutting down on your alcohol consumption, no matter how much you drink, will significantly reduce the risk of long-term health issues that could arise.
