Mother’s Day is just around the corner and it’s time to thank our mums for everything they have done for us. Every culture has their own unique way of celebrating mothers, so take this oppurtunity to discover the many ways in which we say thank you. Mother’s Day will come knocking on our doors on the 15th of March, so turn to page 28 to take a look at these unique traditions and incorporate them into your celebrations.

“Mothers...even when they’re wrong, they’re right!” By Nimra Imran B onne Fete des Meres. Gelukkige moederdag. Feliz Dia Maes. Happy Mother’s Day. It does not matter how we say it, the sentiment and the meaning is just the same. Thank you mum, for being the superhero who never got enough credit for defeating villains like laundry, school lunches and endless homework hours. With Mother’s Day knocking on our doors on the 15th of March, take a look at the unique traditions different cultures have and incorporate them into your Mother’s Day celebrations!

All across the globe, mothers are showered with handmade gifts and burnt-toast breakfasts in bed, as we celebrate a day dedicated to these angels with frizzy hair, school bags in one hand and broken crayons in the other. So now its time to show them just how much we appreciate them!

So if you’re struggling to come up with a spectacular way to spend mother’s day, or if you want to avoid a kitchen in shambles after failed attempts at pancakes, have a look at the many wonderful ways mother’s day is celebrated in different cultures for some inspiration.

In the UK Mother’s Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of lent, also commonly known as Mothering Sunday. Medieval times saw many poor families sending their sons and daughters to work as domestic servants or apprentices in rich households.

Therefore, every year, on the fourth Sunday of Lent, children would be given the day off in order to visit their families. On their way home, the children would often pick flowers to give to their mothers and bake Mothering 28

Cakes, or Simnel cakes.

The holiday also used to be known as ‘Refreshment Sunday’, as the strict lent fasting rules were put aside for one day.

Today Mother’s Day is celebrated in the same manner as in America, with flowers, cards, gifts and half-cooked pancakes cut into heart shapes.

Mother’s Day is the most commercial holiday celebrated in Brazil, second only to Christmas. Church gatherings, special performances put on by children and large multi-generation barbecues see Mother’s day celebrated in every household.

Peru is also no exception to this holiday, where Mother’s day is celebrated with gifts, chocolates and joyous family meals. Peruvian children also give their mothers handmade items. Peru’s indigenous population, however, celebrates the gifts of mother earth, or pachamama in August.

Mother’s Day simply serves as a reminder of all the sacrifices mothers make for their families and the utmost honour they deserve for it.

An independent garage in Plymouth is celebrating its first anniversary under new management along with the news that sales have increased by a staggering 700% since the takeover.

Co-owners of Marshall Motors SW LTD, local entrepreneur Mark Russell and his business partner Darren Brockman, now have their sights firmly set on further increasing the growth of the business.

Independent garage, Marshall Motors SW, already had over 30 years of dedicated experience when two local businessman decided to take on the challenge of new ownership a year ago. Mark Russell, CEO of a successful Plymouth marketing agency, and his business partner Darren Brockman, who brought over 15 years

of motor trade experience to the new venture, focused on offering their loyal and new customers the best quality services in automotive repairs.

During the first few weeks of the takeover, the garage saw an average of one car arrive at the garage for work per day. Fast-forward to January this year and Marshall Motors SW are now welcoming around eight customers through its doors on a typical day.

Hot-smoked salmon salad with a chilli lemon dressing Ingredients

• 500g new potatoes, halved •200g pack asparagus tips •250g bag mixed salad leaves •140g radishes, thinly sliced •8 x hot-smoked salmon steaks, skin removed •4 spring onions, sliced diagonally •3 tbsp lemon juice •125ml olive oil •1 tsp wholegrain mustard •2 red chillies

Method

1. Boil potatoes in salted water for 10 mins until tender, adding the asparagus tips for the final 2 mins of cooking. Drain and allow to cool. Whisk together the salad dressing ingredients. then season to taste.

2. In a large bowl, toss together the potatoes, asparagus, salad recipe from bbcgoodfood.com leaves, herbs and radishes. Add two-thirds of the dressing, thoroughly mix through the salad, then spread the salad over a large platter. Break the hot-smoked salmon into large chunks, then scatter over the top along with the spring onions. Finish by pouring remaining dressing over the top.
