NATIONAL PET MONTH April is National Pet Month, so lets get together with our furry friends and raise awareness about responsible pet ownership for our much loved pets!

B

eing a Nation of pet lovers, we are all aware and passionate about the sheer importance of looking after our pets with care and compassion.

Every year, April shines a light on the responsibilities that come hand in hand when owning a pet, shown through a range of educational campaigns and fundraising events. As a Nation, we come together in aid of raising welfare charities helping support pets in need, and with your help, we can make a change to the cruel reality of animals being neglected. National Pet Month is also jam-packed full of exciting competitions and events you and your pets can get involved in!

How should we be looking after our pets?

It could be from starting a new family and looking into your first family pet, looking for a new furry friend for your ageing animals, adopting an animal in need, or simply looking for a companion to help brighten your days; what compares with the pure excitement and affection your pet presents you with after coming home from a long day work?!

When deciding to make the wonderful life-changing choice as to buying or adopting a pet there are a few steps you will need to consider to ensure your pets have a healthy and happy life.

Being consistently financially stable is a necessity when owning a pet; taking into consideration that pets certainly aren’t cheap. You have to ensure that you can provide your pets with high quality, nutritious food, resources such as toys, as well as insurance and vets bills. Each of these things are essential and when deciding to take ownership of an animal you must be confident you can cover the not so cheap costs that come with them!

Adopting a pet can be very rewarding, helping provide an abandoned animal with a safe environment and a loving home.

There are a few places where you can go to adopt a pet locally: Gables, Woodside, RSPCA and Margaret Green Animal Rescue - Wingletang Rescue and Rehoming Centre.

Being able to provide animals with time and patience are so important. Especially when it comes to newborn puppies!

They’re extremely high maintenance to start with.

Requiring you to take them out every half an hour to toilet train, feeding three times a day, general training, and don’t forget keeping a watchful eye on them ensuring they haven’t chewed up the sofa cushions!

Last but most certainly not least is ensuring you are giving them the love and attention they deserve!

How will owning a pet benefit your life?

Owning a domestic pet has not only shown to make a difference to your physical health, by helping motivate you to get out of the house and get active, but also your mental health; shown by many scientific studies. Cases have shown that pets help improve anxiety, stress and depression. They help ease the feeling of loneliness and provide you with the comfort of companionship.

They also allow children to develop a healthy understanding of responsibility and studies have also suggested they even help children from developing allergies!

The latest statistics show that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was the most popular dog of the year in 2019! Were you surprised?

The National Office of Animal Health (NOAH) represents the UK animal medicines industry: it aims to promote the benefits of safe, effective, quality medicines for the health and welfare of all animals.

Aiming to be the credible voice of a responsible pet food industry. While striving to achieve a balanced regulatory environment for the production of nutritious and safe food, encourages responsible pet ownership. It aims to be the main resource for its members, public and others as well as playing a lead role in forming opinions in Europe.

Pet Care Aware!

As well as the national charities, you can also get involved and help charities a little closer to home!

Gables Farm

Gables Farm was initially discovered by two sisters Mrs. E B Guard and Ms. Agnes Grant in 1907. They would cycle around Plymouth collecting stray cats and later evolved to moved on to helping dogs. As the number of animals collected grew, they decided to take the plunge and begin their animal rescue centre solely running on volunteers.

To this day Gables is still run by volunteers helping from the goodness of their hearts, who aim to help these animals foresee a positive future in a new loving home.

Woodside Sanctuary

EVENT IDEAS Charity fundraising is a fantastic way of getting large social groups of people together to help spur on raising money and promoting awareness to motivate a positive change; here are a few ideas you may like to consider.

SPONSORED DOG WALKS

Why not organise a sponsored dog walk for your favourite charity? Get together with friends and family and your furry pals, and head on out to your favourite place for an adventure!

CARE HOMES AND RESIDENTIAL CENTRES

Plan a National Pet Month day! Invite in a local vet practice, dog trainer or charity to give a talk – and bring some animals in too.

EDUCATIONAL EVENTS

Suggest a pet talk at your local school, community centre, church or even at the local vets during National Pet Month.

Help educate others on how to be responsible pet owners.

ARRANGE A BAKE SALE

An event for everyone, after all, who doesn’t love a bake sale?! Get your family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues involved and start your bake sale in aid of helping local or national animal charities.

ORGANISE A PET SHOW

This could be for dogs, cats, birds, horses or a mixture of them all. Make it fun and include dog agility, waggiest tail, best-looking pup, etc.

The Woodside Animal Welfare Trust is an animal rehoming charity. The foundation of Woodside’s broad field of work was begun in 1974 by Carole Bowles. Her significant contribution to animal welfare was finally recognized in 2000 when she was made an MBE by Her Majesty, The Queen.

Each year millions of us around the nation decide to travel up and down the country with the desire to visit friends and family, commute to work or flee to a well-deserved holiday destination.

One such company is Stagecoach, who are here to provide us with an efficient and frequent coach service with their ever-growing, successful Falcon service. I

n 1980, brother and sister Brian Souter and Ann Gloag decided to start a small recreational vehicle and minibus hire business called Gloagtrotter in Perth, Scotland. With only £25,000 of family inheritance, they decided to put the small nest egg to good use and brought 2 large buses. The pair soon became recognised as a reliable and courteous use of transport to muchneeded destinations around Scotland, that together with their thriving polite and friendly attitude, the company quickly grew. Now, this vast expanding commercial company renamed as Stagecoach has taken the UK by storm becoming the UK’s biggest bus service provider, with over 25,000 employees!

OM met with Leading Driver, James Palmer who has been with the company for 3 years, Senior Controller, William BushallCrane who began his Stagecoach career in London and has now worked his way up through the company over his 11 years of service and Marketing Manager, Aisha O’Connor who joined the company in June 2019. The team tell us how they’re focusing on customer retention, why you should choose Stagecoach and how their

Falcon service has grown rapidly over its four years of operation.

Stagecoach South West has been running for 25 years, providing the South West with a fleet of almost 500 buses, 65 of them being in Plymouth along with 10 Falcon coaches running between Plymouth and Bristol every hour from 4.15 am to 19.00 pm! The business has developed over it’s 25 years, now hosting 1200 employees including over 1000 drivers!

The Falcon was first launched in 2016 by Stagecoach, and during this 4 year period it’s been running they’ve seen a whopping 1 million passengers use this service, with continuous growing numbers!

The Falcon is estimated to take only 3 hours from Plymouth to Bristol and has been a necessity for the towns and villages along the route with no real transport connecting them to Bristol. Other than trains, there was no service running directly between Plymouth and Bristol throughout the day and night, Stagecoach South West saw a gap in the market and the Falcon was born.

In conjunction with this, the Falcon has supplied the population of Plymouth, Bristol and all the other stops along the way including Exeter, Taunton, and Sidcot the availability to travel freely at their convenience through the day and night.

What makes the falcon so appealing is the fantastic frequency of coach services’ travelling every hour beginning at 4:15 am till 19:00 pm, then every 2 hours after that. One of the main attractions about the falcon is its flexibility, a ‘hop on hop off’ system has been introduced, just as you would with a normal city bus; allowing those last-minute plans to go-ahead!

With their invincible competitive prices, the Falcon caters to everyone allowing discounts for under 25’s, over 60’s and even providing group deals with it costing only £58 return for 5 people!

Before the journey sets off from Plymouth the driver will be sure to give an announcement explaining each drop-off and when you’ll be arriving at your destination, providing a simple yet personal experience, something you don’t see elsewhere.

‘These drivers have all sorts of qualifications and come from all walks of life but they’re coach drivers because they choose to be and they enjoy it and no two days are the same!’

If you’re looking for an easy and efficient route to Bristol, maybe you’re catching a flight, treating yourself to some retail therapy or visiting family, you want to ensure you’ve got reliable, hassle free transport right on your doorstep. Tickets are available to buy online by simply heading over to Stagecoach’s sister company Megabus where you can be sure to guarantee your chosen seats. The falcon offers the flexibility at it’s finest with return tickets being used within 28 days of the outbound journey, an extremely versatile system for those travelling away for a few days with no chosen return date!

There is a maximum of 30 seats available to reserve on a falcon and 31 available to the public. Due to the popularity of Stagecoach, the vision is to soon expand their vehicles, providing supplementary double decker coaches (carrying 74 passengers) and potentially increasing the frequency of the coaches to one every half an hour!

Stagecoach is aware that being associated with other companies is a vital key to allow a smooth working service, that appeals to all. With connecting services meaning people can hop off the coach and jump straight onto a park and ride using the same ticket free of charge!

Onboard the coach you’re not only able to pay for your ticket with contactless, but free Wi-Fi access along with being able to charge your phones and/or computers at your seat, with every seat being provided with a USB portable and charging socket. Meaning for a lot the public who use the falcon to commute to and from work they’re able to use this time efficiently and productively.

Stagecoach abides by certain values which are highlighted through their involvement with charity events, for example getting involved with the St Luke’s Hospice Elmer’s Big Parade in 2019, sponsoring their own Elmer the Elephant. Not to forget the individual work that goes on behind closed doors with the courageous team members running marathons and taking part in other charity events in aid of raising money for their chosen charities, raising over 20k for charities in 2018 alone!

With the hope to potentially provide an increase in the fleet of vehicles the Falcon has to offer with larger coaches, which will help combat the growing capacity of people. Not only that but include even more frequent transport, as they are hoping to increase the service frequency to every half an hour and accumulating more stops along the route!

300g strong bread flour, 1 tsp instant yeast (from a sachet or a tub), 1 tsp salt, 1 tbsp olive oil (plus extra for drizzling) For the tomato sauce: 100ml passata, handful fresh basil or 1 tsp dried, 1 garlic clove, crushed For the topping: 125g ball mozzarella, sliced, handful grated or shaved parmesan (or vegetarian alternative), a handful cherry tomatoes (halved) To finish: handful basil leaves (optional) One Make the base: Put the flour into a large bowl, then stir in the yeast and salt. Make a well, pour in 200ml warm water and the olive oil and bring together with a wooden spoon until you have a soft, fairly wet dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 mins until smooth. Cover with a tea towel and set aside. You can leave the dough to rise if you like, but it’s not essential for a thin crust.

Two Make the sauce: Mix the passata, basil and crushed garlic together, then season to taste. Leave to stand at room temperature while you get on with shaping the base.

Three Roll out the dough: If you’ve let the dough rise, give it a quick knead, then split into two balls. On a floured surface, roll out the dough into large rounds, about 25cm across, using a rolling pin. The dough needs to be very thin as it will rise in the oven. Lift the rounds onto two floured baking sheets.

Four Top and bake: Heat oven to 240C/fan 220C /gas 8. Put another baking sheet or an upturned baking tray in the oven on the top shelf. Smooth sauce over bases with the back of a spoon. Scatter with cheese and tomatoes, drizzle with olive oil and season. Put one pizza, still on its baking sheet, on top of the preheated sheet or tray. Bake for 8-10 mins until crisp. Serve with a little more olive oil, and basil leaves if using. Repeat step for remaining pizza

Easy carrot cake

235ml vegetable oil (plus extra for the tin), 100g natural yogurt, 4 large eggs, 1½ tsp vanilla extract, ½ an orange (zested), 265g self-raising flour, 335g light muscovado sugar, 2½ tsp ground cinnamon, ¼ fresh nutmeg finely grated, 265g carrots (about 3 grated), 100g sultanas or raisins, 100g walnuts or pecans, roughly chopped (optional) For the icing: 100g slightly salted butter (softened), 300g icing sugar, 100g full-fat cream cheese One Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Oil and line the base and sides of two 20cm cake tins with baking parchment.

Whisk the oil, yogurt, eggs, vanilla and zest in a jug. Mix the flour, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg with a good pinch of salt in a bowl. Squeeze any lumps of sugar through your fingers, shaking the bowl a few times to bring the lumps to the surface.

Two Add the wet ingredients to the dry, along with the carrots, raisins and half the nuts, if using. Mix well to combine, then divide between the tins. Bake for 25-30 mins or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. If any wet mixture clings to the skewer, return to the oven for 5 mins, then check again. Leave to cool in the tins.

There To make the icing, beat the butter and sugar together until smooth. Add half the cream cheese and beat again, then add the rest (adding it bit by bit prevents the icing from splitting).

Remove the cakes from the tins and sandwich together with half the icing. Top with the remaining icing and scatter with the remaining walnuts.

Chocolate rice krispie cakes 100g milk chocolate (broken up), 50g dark chocolate (broken up), 100g butter, 4 tbsp golden syrup, 100g rice pops (Rice Krispies) To decorate: 50g milk chocolate (melted), sprinkles, mini marshmallows, nuts, Smarties, dried fruit or white chocolate buttons One Put the chocolate in a heatproof bowl with the butter and golden syrup and gently melt in 10-second bursts in the microwave, or melt it over a pan of simmering water, making sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Stir until smooth, then take off the heat and stir in the rice pops, coating them gently with the chocolate until they are all completely covered.

Two Divide the mixture between nine cupcake or 12 fairy cake paper cases – it’s easier if you slide these into a muffin tin as it will help them hold their shape. Leave to set. If you want them to set faster, put in the fridge for 1 hr.

Two Drizzle with a little melted chocolate and decorate with sweets, dried fruit or nuts while they are still wet enough to stick them on. Will keep in an airtight container for five days.

Easy one-pot chicken casserole 8 bone-in chicken thighs, skin pulled off and discarded,1 tbsp oil, 5 spring onions (sliced), 2 tbsp plain flour, 2 chicken stock cubes, 2 large carrots (cut into batons), 400g new potato (halved if large), 200g frozen peas, 1 tbsp grainy mustard, small handful fresh soft herbs, like parsley, chives, dill or tarragon (chopped) One Put the kettle on. Fry 8 bone-in chicken thighs in 1 tbsp oil in a casserole dish or wide pan with a lid to quickly brown. Stir in the whites of 5 spring onions with 2 tbsp plain flour and 2 chicken stock cubes until the flour disappears, then gradually stir in 750ml hot water from the kettle.

Two Throw in 2 large carrots, in batons and 400g new potatoes, bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for 20 mins.

Take off the lid and simmer for 15 mins more, then throw in 200g peas for another 5 mins.

Three Season, stir in 1 tbsp grainy mustard, the green spring onion bits, a small handful of fresh soft herbs and some seasoning.

Vegan lemon cheesecake 200g/7oz digestive biscuits crushed, 75g/3oz butter or vegan margarine melted, 1 lemon zest and juice, 200ml/7fl oz limoncello liqueur, 3 tbsp agar-agar, 400g/14oz firm tofu, 1 tbsp vegan cream cheese, 400g/14oz coconut cream, few drops vanilla essence, 115g/4oz caster sugar, fresh berries or berry sauce, to serve One In a bowl, mix the crushed biscuits with the butter or margarine. Press the mixture into the base of a 20cm/8in round springform cake tin. In a pan set over a very low heat, add the lemon juice, limoncello, a splash of water and the agar-agar. Stir until the agar-agar has dissolved.

Two In a food processor, combine the tofu, cream cheese, coconut cream, a splash of vanilla essence, sugar and lemon zest. Blend until smooth. Pour the tofu mixture over the biscuit base and smooth the surface. Chill in the fridge for an hour until set. Serve with fresh berries or a berry sauce.

Rhubarb crumble 500g rhubarb (chopped into chunks), 100g golden caster sugar, 3 tbsp port (optional) For the crumble topping: 140g self-raising flour, 85g butter (chilled), 50g light brown muscovado sugar, 50g chopped walnuts (optional) ONE Tip 500g thumb-length chunks of rhubarb into a saucepan with 100g golden caster sugar and 3 tbsp port, if using. Cover and simmer on a very low heat for 15 mins, adding more sugar if you want. When soft (but still holding its shape) and sweet enough, pour the rhubarb into a medium baking dish.

Two Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. To make the topping, rub 140g self-raising flour and 85g chilled butter together with your fingers until you have a soft, crumbly topping. Now add 50g light brown muscovado sugar and 50g chopped walnuts, if using. Mix together with your hands.

Three Scatter the topping over the rhubarb and bake for 30 mins or until golden brown on top. Serve piping hot with a big jug of thick vanilla custard.

EASY WHITE BREAD 500g strong white flour, plus extra for dusting, 2 tsp salt, 7g sachet fast-action yeast, 3 tbsp olive oil, 300ml water One Mix 500g strong white flour, 2 tsp salt and a 7g sachet of fast-action yeast in a large bowl. Make a well in the centre, then add 3 tbsp olive oil and 300ml water, and mix well. If the dough seems a little stiff, add another 1-2 tbsp water and mix well.Tip onto a lightly floured work surface and knead for around 10 mins.Once the dough is satin-smooth, place it in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with cling film. Leave to rise for 1 hour until doubled in size or place in the fridge overnight.

Two Line a baking tray with baking parchment. Knock back the dough (punch the air out and pull the dough in on itself) then gently mould the dough into a ball. Place it on the baking parchment to prove for a further hour until doubled in size.

Heat oven to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7. Dust the loaf with some extra flour and cut a cross about 6cm long into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.

THREE Bake for 25-30 mins until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped underneath. Cool on a wire rack.

CORONAVIRUS HOW TO STAY SAFE The Governments guidelines are changing daily, we need to abide by the latest requirements and ensure we are staying home (Governments guidelines updated 23 March 2020).

A

s coronavirus continues to spread, some countries are putting their citizens on lockdown. China, Denmark, El Salvador, Ireland, Italy, France, New Zeland, Poland and Spain have already implemented the worlds largest and most restricted mass quarantines. This involves all public transport coming to a holt, closures of Schools universities and work. Most shops being shut, with only pharmacies and supermarkets kept open. In cases such as China, residents were only permitted to leave their homes to pick up essential supplies or seek medical help - and those who did leave were required to wear a mask.

MAIN MESSAGES FROM THE GOVERNMENT If you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started.

If you live with others and you are the first in the household to have symptoms of coronavirus, then you must stay at home for 7 days, but all other household members who remain well must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill.

Staying at home for 14 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community.

If you can, move any vulnerable individuals (such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions) out of your home, to stay with friends or family for the duration of the home isolation period. If you cannot move vulnerable people out of your home, stay away from them as much as possible.

If you have coronavirus symptoms do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. you do not need to contact 111 to tell them you’re staying at home testing for coronavirus is not needed if you’re staying at home.

Plan and ask others for help to ensure that you can successfully stay at home and consider what can be done for vulnerable people in the household.

Ask your employer, friends and family to help you to get the things you need to stay at home.

THINGS TO HELP YOU PREPARE FOR NOW The best thing you can do now is plan for how you can adapt your daily routine, and that of others in your household, to be able to follow this advice. Some of how you could prepare include: Talk to your neighbours and family and exchange phone numbers of household contacts.

Consider and plan for those in your home who are considered vulnerable create a contact list with phone numbers of neighbours, schools, employer, chemist, NHS 111.

Set up online shopping accounts if possible.

WHY STAYING HOME IS SO IMPORTANT Individuals with symptoms that may be due to coronavirus and their household members must stay at home. Staying at home will help control the spread of the virus to friends, the wider community, and particularly the most vulnerable.

Those with symptoms and living alone should remain at home for 7 days after the onset of their symptoms. This will reduce the risk of you infecting others.

If you live with others and you or one of them have symptoms that may be caused by coronavirus, then household members must stay at home and not leave your house for 14 days.

People living within a household will likely infect each other or may already be infected. Staying at home for 14 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community.

STAY AT HOME You and all household members should remain at home. Do not go to work, school, or public areas, and do not use public transport or taxis.

If you require help with buying groceries, other shopping, or picking up medication, or walking a dog, you will need to ask friends or relatives. Alternatively, you can order medication by phone or online.

You can also order your shopping online.

Make sure you tell delivery drivers to leave items outside for collection if you order online. The delivery driver should not come into your home.

If you are an employee and unable to work due to coronavirus, please refer to this guidance from the Department for Work and Pensions to find out about the support that is available to you.

LIVING WITH CHILDREN What we have seen so far is that children with coronavirus appear to be less severely affected. It is nevertheless important to do your best to follow this guidance.

If you have a vulnerable person living with you minimise as much as possible the time any vulnerable family members spend in shared spaces such as kitchens, bathrooms and sitting areas, and keep shared spaces well ventilated.

Personal waste (such as used tissues) and disposable cleaning cloths can be stored securely within disposable rubbish bags. These bags should be placed into another bag, tied securely and kept separate from other waste. This should be put aside for at least 72 hours before being put in your usual external household waste bin. Other household waste can be disposed of as normal.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOU GET BETTER Drink water to keep yourself hydrated; you should drink enough during the day so your urine is a pale clear colour. You

Use these according to the instructions on the packet or label and do not exceed the recommended dose. If you or your family need to seek medical advice, seek prompt medical attention if your illness or the illness in any household members is worsening. If it’s not an emergency, contact NHS 111 online. If you have no internet access, you should call NHS 111. If it is an emergency and you need to call an ambulance, dial 999 and inform the call handler or operator that you or your relative have coronavirus symptoms.

DO NOT HAVE VISITORS IN YOUR HOME Do not invite or allow social visitors, such as other friends and family, to enter your home. If you want to speak to someone who is not a member of your household, use the phone or social media.

If you or a family member receive essential care in your home, then carers should continue to visit. Carers will be provided with facemasks and gloves to reduce the risk of you passing on the infection.

If you have pets in the household At present, there is no evidence that companion animals/pets such as dogs and cats can be infected with coronavirus.

We know that staying at home for a prolonged period can be difficult, frustrating and lonely for some people and that you or other household members may feel low. It can be particularly challenging if you don’t have much space or access to a garden.

It’s important to remember to take care of your mind as well as your body and to get support if you need it. Stay in touch with family and friends over the phone or on social media.

As cases of Covid-19 rise in the UK, more people are being encouraged to self-isolate in an attempt to reduce the spread of the virus, which so far has proven a particular risk to the elderly and those with underlying health conditions. It’s up to us as a nation to stop this virus in its tracks by avoiding unnecessary travel, washing our hands and social distancing. The secondhand effects of this can result in ‘Cabin Fever’.

nless you’ve been living outside civilization for the past few months, you will be well aware that we are currently at the forefront of a worldwide pandemic. A global health crisis known as Coronavirus or COVID-19, which has inforced worry and anxiety through the world’s population.

Seven days? Fourteen days? Most of us may find the idea of being stuck inside the house for a long time extremely daunting and nervewracking. Although it is important to “flatten the curve” of daily cases that put pressure on our health care system, it could lead to a lesser evil: boredom and stir craziness known as ‘Cabin Fever’.

For a lot of us, 2 weeks off could seem an absolute dream! Time to binge-watch your favourite series on Netflix, put your feet up for some much needed chill time with a whole load of comfort food!

But for those living alone, the elderly, people with underlying health problems or with mental health issues this will be a major struggle. It is so important to reduce anxiety by keeping your both your body and mind active!

If you’re not already in self-isolation, the chances are that you will within the next few weeks. Here at OM, we believe it’s so important to remain within our strong British mentality and ‘keep calm and carry on’. It’s important to follow the government’s guidelines in order to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.

Nevertheless, during the darkest of times, we can experience the most beautiful acts of kindness. We are seeing the world pull together in unity during these uncertain times.

One thing we know is you can’t quarantine music; you may have seen footage of Italy playing and singing from balconies in locked-down cities. Obtaining a positive attitude not only expresses strong resilience but highlights our empowering togetherness when in a crisis; even through the toughest times these small cities may have ever seen.

If you have the News and Radio on almost 24/7, eagerly keeping up to date with all the latest facts and procedures informed by our Government, this may initially fuel your anxiety. But there are a few things which you could do at home to

keep spirits high and fill the days.

Self-isolation is a clear factor in order to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus indefinably; exhibited by China, where they have now closed their main Cronaviras hospital due to not having enough paitents to sustain it!

However this can also spur on secondhand health problems. For some people who are in self- isolation this may trigger some mild mental health problems.

Studies shown by people who have spent a winter in a polar research station have revealed that being in selfisolation for a long time have reported feeling anxious and/or depressed. With nearly 50% of them feeling extremely irritable and struggled with sleep and experiencing memory loss.

Keep in mind that while coronavirus isolation shouldn’t be to that extreme, it still exhibits concerning effects from being enclosed space for a long period.

Social Distancing may seem frightening – Our generation have experienced an extreme increase of cases of mental health issues within the past few years, being alone with your thoughts could seem like the last thing you may want to do. Having a Routine is an important necessity and can help avoid relapse into depression or anxiety.

Tackle these issues and help yourself by structuring your days, as you would a day at work. Structure your sleeping pattern when you get out of bed, when you get into bed. Give yourself a set time to have a meal and try to keep on track of them. Make a to do lists and stay productive and motivated and if you can work from home then do it!

Keeping your mind busy will help improve your mindset and reduce the anxiety you may be feeling as a result of the News.

Use this precious time to spend some well needed quality time with the family, get together round the dining room table and draw out of the dust covered boardgames; that haven’t been touched in years. You forget how much you enjoy it!

If you are living with family members you could be slightly at risk of passing the virus to one another. It’s important to follow the government’s guidelines to stay safe!

Ensure to keep washing your hands with hot, soapy water for at least 20 seconds and if you have a high temperature and cough then be sure to ring 111 and distance yourself from people for a minimum of two weeks.

There are a few things you could try to stay busy. Online exercise classes are accessible at the click of a button!

Why not take a stroll in this fresh spring air, we are hopeful for some sun soon and don’t we all need it! Being cooped up in the house is in no means good for neither your mind nor body. Bring hand sanitiser with you and keep at least a 2-metre distance from others.

Take your dog and walk through the park; exercise releases endorphins known more commonly as the ‘happy hormone’ which will naturally lowers your stress levels.

When returning from a walk, feeling lighter with hopefully with a clearer mind, why not see what you’ve got knocking around in the cupboards. Get inventive with your meals?!

As you may be aware of the nation’s current issue in regards to stockpiling. You may have an unfortunate shortage of your most common shopping items such as eggs, milk and bread; which usually would be easy to source from your local supermarket.

Why not view the cup as being half full. Rummage through the backs of the pantry, get the kids together to see what you can all whip up when you put your minds together.

This pandemic will cause a lot of us to make some rational important decisions, could be missing out on a friend’s birthday or cancelling a wedding. These decisions could ultimately feel like a selfish endeavour but try not to let the guilt to take over, this is something each of us will go through.

This will change all of our everyday lives for who knows how long, which we will have

to learn to adjust to. Although saddening to think about, the quicker we all pull together in aid of the problem the quicker we can all get back to normality. But most importantly preserving the lives of those most vulnerable!

We all crave human interaction; loneliness will have an indefinite spike in the coming months with the most vulnerable being asked to remain isolated for a minimum of 12 weeks!

Things which you could do to help either yourself or loved ones could be arranging Skype, Facetime or whatever video app available on a laptop or tablet. For a lot of the older generation who don’t have social media, they may feel as if they’re losing touch with the outside world.

Providing people with a device which allows them to communicate with loved ones would be hugely beneficial with the aim to life spirits and ensure they don’t feel alone.

Use this time presented to you efficiently and productively, why not achieve things you’ve always been meaning to get done but have been admittedly been putting off.

That could be starting to learn how to play the guitar, learning a different language or getting your nose stuck in that book that’s been on your shelf that you ‘haven’t had the time for’. Well it just so happens we have been given the gift of time, so use it!

On a slightly more positive note we are all guilty of experiencing FOMO from time to time (fear of missing out) but what a liberating feeling not having that feeling?!

There will quite literally be nothing going on, meaning you will have quite litterally nothing to miss out on!

STRESS AWARENESS MONTH This April welcomes stress awareness month! Presenting a conversation about one of the most common mental illness which affects almost half (39%) of the British population at least once a week at work. For 15% it’s every single day!

re you stressed and under pressure? Are you struggling to cope with the daily demands of your life? Stress is something that affects the majority of us on a day to day basis, that being big or small.

Stress Awareness Month has been held annually every April since 1992, and has been created to help educate people on how to deal with stress efficiently and to share awareness of the fact it’s ok to be stressed; you’re never alone!

WHY DO WE GET STRESSED? Stress is a physical reaction that our body develops when we are under strain and pressure. Our body responds to this by producing chemicals and hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine ready to attack, known as the ‘fight or flight’ reflex. This can, unfortunately, trigger a butterfly effect of health problems.

HEALTHY BALANCED DIET What can we eat and what cant we eat? It’s forever changing and can be extremely frustrating for many of us.

Ensuring you’re eating a healthy, balanced diet is so important to ensure that you’re boosting your immune system, lowering your blood pressure and subconsciously helping to lessen the way stress will affect your body! You’ll want to avoid comfort foods that are high in saturated fats as they can boost your moods temporarily but subsequently, this leads to energy crashes and less motivation throughout your day.

SPRING DAYS AT HOME Looks like for a lot of the world, Spring is going to be spent at the comfort of our own homes this year.

But not to worry, there are a range of fun-filled activities you and the kids can get up to this April!

t may not feel like it because of the horrid weather we’ve been having lately but spring has finally crept up upon us!

We’re now welcoming the school Easter holidays; coming a little earlier than we thought! All hopeful for some sunshine after what feels like a never-ending spell of wet stormy weather...

Due to the unfortunate circumstance as a result of of the coronavirus pandemic, spring looks like it’s going to be spent at home this year; with concerts, sports events and tourist spots all being postponed. Nevertheless, there are a wide range of fun activities you and the kids can all get involved with this spring; it’s all about having a plan!

ACTIVITIES FOR THE KIDS Easter is almost here, so let’s get the kids active over the holidays, and all know the main motivation – chocolate! Why not organise an Easter egg hunt?

This can be in and around the housekeeping them busy, whilst focusing on what you’re doing is safe at all times.

An important way to reassure kids is to emphasise safety precautions that you are taking.

Funnily enough Kids feel empowered when they know what to do to keep themselves safe!

Be sure to abide by the government’s guidelines on social distancing; shunning everyone besides your immediate family.

However, this in no means retaining your kids in the house all day.

GET OUTSIDE Having the kids cooped up in a house all day will only result in restlessness and irritation. Avoid the aggravation and get them exercising! Keep in mind it is crucial to involve safeguarding in all activities. Get out in the garden and enjoy the fresh spring air, get them off the Ipads and computers, and organise activities and games!

This could be setting them challenges; kids love to be competitive, ask them how many times they can hit and bat and ball in the air or time them and see how many laps they can do. Get involved with them, this will encourage them and spur them on!

Plymouth is a fantastic place to live and grow up, most commonly known as the ‘Ocean City’. We are truly blessed to be living by the seafront and surrounded by stunning nature.

Why not go on a family walk with the dogs. Ensuring you are biding by the changing guidelines the government have set in place.
