BUSINESS PROFILE Beacon Electrical proudly serves the local area with a huge range of home appliances and fantastic customer service to match. Following on from our previous visit in February- we catch up with Mark Higgins, who runs the stores with his brother Nick, to find out how the business has developed and how Beacon Electrical can provide you a better deal than online.

Beacon Electrical started 40 years ago, focusing on house wiring, lighting and heating for trade, and in 1976 Marks father, Chris Higgins - opened a shop near their home in Beacon Park. A few years later the shop moved to premises on Beacon Park Road, where it still stands today serving as both a store and head office.

From here, further growth continued in 1984 when the Plymstock branch was opened, and in 1988 Chris ventured into the high street, opening another store on Fore Street in Totnes. It was around this time that Mark took his first steps into the family business, working in the Totnes store during his school holidays.

Sitting down with Mark now, we’re keen to find out how the business has been doing since we last spoke to him in February. “Staff are the most important thing” he tells us.

“We rely on them to be face to face with the customers. It takes time to train them up to the level we need”. Mark explains that they can gain experience on the job from more senior staff members, or they can be

sent away to one of Beacon Electricals many trusted manufacturers for a more intense training course. “If you can get your hands dirty and use the appliances, you’re going to have a much more in depth knowledge of how they work”.

The way in which Beacon Electrical offer a complete service has changed over the years. “We used to just sell the appliance, and after that it would be down to the individual to do the rest”. Now, Beacon Electrical offer a full range of services after purchase. “We can assist with the instillation, the delivery, and we work very closely with our gas safety installers and delivery team to ensure it’s all done properly”.

This, alongside their focus on customer service is what sets Beacon Electrical apart from the big retailers. Mark explains how he has built up an incredibly good rapport with a number of manufacturers- with his main focus being price matching with all of the main online retailers.

he way people shop has evolved over the years, with online retail becoming bigger and bigger. Beacon Electrical are no exception, as Mark explains the importance of getting their website up to speed. However, the most important thing remains- quality customer service is key when you visit Beacon Electrical and shopping online won’t necessarily get you the best deal.

Despite being much smaller than their national competitors, Beacon Electrical can absolutely go head to head with them as far as deals and prices are concerned

“With the main retailers the focus is on the lowest price and then you pay a lot for the services, however we know that it’s the price the customer pays for everything that really counts. Because we’re cheaper on the extra services such as installation, we often end up being cheaper overall”.

“There’s a whole lot of campaigns at the moment to shop locally and rightly so.

Local businesses are shutting up; they don’t seem to be flourishing as they should be”. Mark is keen to promote the fact that people can buy locally from them.

“You can come and see the product, you can feel the quality and see the colour choices and see the size all right there in front of you”.

If Mark doesn’t have something in his showroom, he can go to the monitor and pull up their website in front of the customer and talk through specifications there and then.

In February, Mark was telling us of his plans to develop Beacon Electricals online presence, and today he stresses the importance of doing so. “It’s so easy for people to go online and compare prices with a quick click.

“The process of customer research is very important. If they don’t see an item on our website, they are going to assume we don’t have it- which isn’t necessarily true” This is why Mark would like to invite customers into their stores rather than relying on the internet. He tells us, “There aren’t many shops that have such a big range on show anymore. Most of the time customers just have to look at the product online and rely on reviews, but people should just talk to us.

Mark has recently been spending some time in the Totnes branch. Whilst it would be easy to detach and stay in his officeMark admits that the most rewarding part of the job is being so hands on with customers. “I can honestly say that the relationships between our staff and regular customers is bordering on friendship!

We still try and work in the branches and ensure everything is going as it should be- and the good news is that it is”. Mark says that the status in the local community is really positive.

So, looking forward to the next 5 years, where does Mark see Beacon Electrical?

“I hate the fact that people buy online products and end up being dissatisfied.

We’re not looking to take over the world.

We’re just looking to give people the best service and the best price. I don’t want to have 20 branches in 5 years. I’m quite happy to stick to the branches we have and continue what we are doing.

“I hope that people will continue to support local businesses like ourselves- not just because they are local- but because they really can get the best products at the best prices”.

he award-winning Buckfast Abbey Education Department will be running half-day children’s clubs throughout August. The sessions are LOGO aimed at children aged 8-11 years with a focus on art and drama and an emphasis placed on themes connected to Buckfast Abbey. There will be games, crafts, stories and drama activities, with plenty of opportunities to learn new skills in the safe and beautiful surroundings of Buckfast Abbey. The Education Department was recently awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge in recognition of the department’s aims to make learning an active experience for children. The accolade is presented to those offering an outstanding learning environment for children.The Summer Fun Holiday Club sessions cost £15 per child, per session or £12 per session for multiple bookings. The cost includes mid-morning refreshments.The Grange Restaurant will also be offering kids meals for £2.50 throughout the summer holidays.

ove mud. Love life! The Bear Trail, located in Cullompton is an exciting outdoor adventure trail, that provides space for children (and adults!) to run, jump and climb. There are a series of obstacles which involve stepping across bear infested mud pits, tumbling through the bear tunnels and climbing bear mountain! I

magine having the chance to climb the highest mountain in the world. Imagine being the First and only Cornishman to date to climb Everest. In 2011 on the 21st of May for 20mins after nine hours of climbing I stood on, “Top of the World.”

Lying on the sofa feeling sorry for myself after fracturing my foot playing football eating copious amounts of pringles and chocolate digestive biscuits. I was watching a Wish You Were Here program following a charity trek going up Kilimanjaro. Something triggered in my mind that appealed to me. This would be a life-changing moment for postman Ed Buckingham.

Kilimanjaro would be the catalyst for a journey that would take me to the highest mountains on each continent conquering peaks such as Aconcagua, Denali, Everest and Vinson at the first time of asking. For a postman coming from his native origin of Cornwall a huge and potentially fatal catalogue of ventures. Besides the logistics and the cost there is the severe altitude and climatic conditions to consider.

Everest was the biggest hurdle in terms of the magnitude in height and depleted lack of oxygen. Entering into, “The Death Zone” you are seriously on borrowed time and a race against dying! Once that was conquered I wanted to complete the other two continents of Australasia and Antarctica becoming the first Cornishman to do so.

My biggest achievement is getting back safely and returning to day to day life and work. For that I am extremely grateful for. Coming back down is harder taking into account the dehydration, sleep deprivation, lack of food and lack of oxygen. One small mistake can prove fatal. It is when you learn about your mental strength. I was recognised by the Cornish Gorsedh for Exceptional Endeavour in 2013 for raising my St Piran’s on Everest.

In between funding and getting myself to the final two continents I have raised money for the British Heart Foundation, authored a book and started speaking about Everest and Antarctica. It gives me great pleasure speaking to groups or going into schools. Besides my equipment that fascinates the pupils I am now using virtual reality and nose clips more commonly used in swimming. In a small way this is trying to simulate what it is like climbing with a lack of oxygen.

My book was successfully published in 2016 and I would like to further my speaking into motivational and inspirational targeting business and after dinner speaking.

You may see a different colour bus along your street from 30th July...

P

lymouth Citybus are investing £3.5m in sixteen brand new double deck vehicles to run its ever popular and growing 21 and 21A route. The route which is now four years old has seen growth, enabling big investment in new vehicles.

Running from Plympton to Barne Barton via the City Centre the new buses will be decorated in a brand new design.

Currently RedFlash, the route will now become ‘Spark’ with a two tone metallic grey and red paint scheme.

The buses in technical terms are state of the art Enviro 400 City buses, with a distinctive glass staircase alongside a range of other new features.

Built in the UK, from manufacturer Alexander Dennis, Plymouth Citybus Managing Director Richard Stevens put the vehicle spec together at their head office.

One of the main features for the new buses is that they are carbon certified, reducing the number of greenhouse gases produced, making them ten times cleaner per passenger than a diesel car.

USB charging points for each seat are to be introduced for the first time, coupled with free Wi-Fi and executive seating; passenger comfort has been put to the top of the list when specifying the vehicle build.

Richard Stevens said: “The latest investment will significantly increase our capacity on the Barne Barton to Plympton routes as the new vehicles can carry 108 passengers, seated and standing, which is more than the RedFlash buses.

The current buses working the route, branded as RedFlash will be cascaded to service 42’s, providing newer and bigger buses for the routes that serve Derriford Hospital. The 42 routes currently use single deck vehicles.

Richard continued, “Transferring the RedFlash double deckers to the No 42 services will also mean we will be able to carry more passengers, on newer buses in greater comfort.”

This £3.5 million investment comes after a period of continued annual vehicle investment, now reaching £15 million in the last four years, replacing half the company’s fleet with either new buses or alternative fuel Gas buses, the first in the South West.

Buses is just one area in which the company is investing.

Recently launching its new schools project, seeing 150 children from across the city visit the depot at Milehouse to show them how the company works and what employment opportunities are available once their education has finished.

Last year Plymouth Citybus carried in excess of 17.5 million passenger journeys across Plymouth and East Cornwall, where in 2015 they expanded, taking over ex Western Greyhound routes and safeguarding jobs.

Current passenger satisfaction is at 90%, a survey undertaken by independent body Transport Focus each year.

Ten of the fleet are also fitted with real-time passenger satisfaction machines, where passengers press the face that reflects the journey they have just taken. In the past year over 850,000 reactions have been collated via the machines with the current score standing at 93% satisfaction.

Always wanting to be at the forefront of innovation there are some exciting plans in the pipeline.

Within the next couple of months the whole fleet will be fitted with new ticket machines. These machines will allow passengers to pay for tickets onboard using contactless payment, either through a bank card or mobile phone. This will enable singles, returns and day tickets to be purchased this way, so there is no more need to try and find cash to travel.

DRAKES ISLAND SWIM The second annual Chestnut Appeal Drakes Island swim took place on Saturday 15th July.

T

his swim saw over 100 participants who set off from the beach at Firestone Bay with the swim to Drakes Island and back around 1.5km in distance.

The swim was slightly delayed due to the late departure of a HMS submarine from Devonport Dockyard, but once the Submarine had passed by Drakes Island the swimmers set off for the first of two Buoys set down at each end of the Island.

The sea conditions were good and although there was a breeze coming from the South the shelter of the Bay meant that the surface of the sea was still relatively calm, and it was not long before the first of the swimmers were back clambering over the Boulders and heading towards a warm cup of tea and a breakfast burrito kindly supplied by Jim and his staff from Victuals Café.

Although the swim was a challenge rather than a race, the first five swimmers were all keen to achieve good times. Ben Proctor being first home followed by Gavin who beat his Dad Steven for the first time and James who was on Holiday from the Midlands just beating Jack to the finish area.

Swimmers then came in at a steady flow with the majority back around the 30-40 minute mark. The delayed start meant that the Tide was now pushing out and the last of the swimmers really had to battle against the pull away from the finish line.

David Squires from the Chestnut Appeal said “It’s a great swim for anyone new to an organised Open Water Swim. We had a great range of ages from 74 to 13”.

In 2016 the swim raised over £8,000 for the Chestnut Appeal for Prostate Cancer an amount that helped the charity provide the very latest in equipment for faster diagnosis of prostate cancer now in place at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

At a cost of £105,000 the Ultrasound - MRI Fusion Scanner for Targeted Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer is the first of its kind in the region. The Chestnut Appeal hope that soon they can announce the arrival of a second Scanner in the East of the region and it is their aim and with the support of the public to install others in Torbay and Truro as and when funds allow.

Chargrilled jerk chicken & sweetcorn buckwheat 120g sweetcorn, 1/2 red onion, 1 green chilli,1 lime,1 red pepper, 1 tbsp jerk seasoning, 1 tbsp oil, 2 tomatoes,freerange chicken breasts, 80g buckwheat, Large handful of fresh coriander

Black bean & grilled corn lettuce tacos Corn on the cob, gem lettuce, red onion, 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp smoked paprika 240g black beans, 2 tomatoes, 2 tsp chipotle paste 300g sweet potato, 30g creamed coconut, 4 tsp oil

1. Preheat the oven to 200C / gas mark 6. Cut the sweet potato into fries (skin on) place on a baking tray and drizzle with oil. Place in the oven for 20 mins.

2. Finely slice the red onion. Dice the tomatoes. Cut the base off the gem lettuce to separate the leaves.

3. To make quick pickled onions; place the red onion in a bowl with the apple cider vinegar and a pinch of sea salt. Stir and set aside.

4. Remove the husk from the corn, rub with oil and sprinkle with a pinch of sea salt. Heat a griddle pan on a medium-high heat and cook the corn on the cob for 10-15 mins until golden and softened. Slice the kernels off the cob and set aside.

5. Drain the black beans. Heat a frying pan on a lowmedium heat. Add the beans, ground cumin, smoked paprika and half of the chipotle paste. Cook for 5 mins.

1. Rinse the buckwheat and place in a saucepan with 400ml boiling water, and simmer for 15 mins.

2. To butterfly the chicken, carefully slice through one side of each breast from the thickest part to the thinnest, being careful not cut right through to the end.

Open out the chicken breasts to resemble a butterfly.

Place in a bowl with 1 tbsp oil, the jerk seasoning and a pinch of sea salt.

3. Heat a griddle pan (or BBQ) to a medium-high heat, then add the butterflied chicken breasts and ensure they are cooked through. Whilst the chicken is cooking, make the chilli tomato salsa. Finely dice the half red onion and tomatoes and finely chop the chilli.

4. Mix together in a bowl with half of the juice from the lime and season.

6. Dice the red pepper, roughly chop the coriander and drain the sweetcorn. Drain the cooked buckwheat and stir through the red pepper, sweetcorn and half of the coriander. Season with sea salt and black pepper.

7. Spoon the pepper and buckwheat onto two warm plates, top with the chicken and serve the tomato chilli salsa alongside. Drizzle over the remaining lime juice.

6. To make the coconut chipotle sauce; dissolve the creamed coconut with 40ml boiling water and mix with the remaining chipotle paste.

7. Spoon the spiced black beans into the gem lettuce leaves, and top with the grilled corn, diced tomatoes and pickled red onions. Drizzle with the coconut chipotle sauce and serve alongside the sweet potato fries.

People who want to wave goodbye to their warts, moles, cysts and skin tags but are not eligible for treatment in the NHS can have them removed by using an established private skincare and minor surgery service in Plymouth... are very conscious of it or it may cause problems, for example, by getting caught on items of clothing. People are more conscious of their general looks too, including men who make up almost half of the patients seen in the service.

Sentinel has written to GPs surgeries across Plymouth and the South Hams explaining how they can link up with the new business. However, the service will see patients from any location.

A unique service twist Based at modern premises with free parking at Plymouth Science Park next door to Derriford Hospital, it runs clinics managed by GPs and podiatrists highly experienced and with a specialist interest in the procedures offered.

Keenly priced The clinics are held weekly and patients can book a convenient appointment up to 3 months in advance. Cost depends on the treatment undertaken; for example, a mole removal is £469 with the sample being sent to the Derriford lab for checking.

Test results are sent to the patient’s GP. Toe nail and verruca removals are just £219.

The service has a quite unique twist in that a proportion of the revenues raised will be invested back into local NHS services and into GP services for funding new projects and initiatives.

Lee explained it is not Sentinel’s intention to take minor surgery away from GP practices that wish to still offer it.

SUMMER HOLIDAY If you’re busy planning for your summer holiday, chances are you’ve got your spending money sorted, bought some new holiday clothes and packed your tourist guide. What you may not have thought to pack is plasters, painkillers and compression socks, but these could prove vital.

he last thing anyone wants on their summer holiday is to get ill. But in the lead up to a holiday, it can be easy to spend more time thinking about the latest season’s fashion, getting the best exchange rate or making sure that the pets will be well looked after.

It may not seem important at the time, but having a quick chat with your pharmacist before you go away can help to avoid some of the most common illnesses that can spoil your holiday.

STOMACH BUGS People often suffer with diarrhoea and sickness on holiday because they have consumed contaminated food or water.

Follow the simple rule ‘cook it, boil it, peel it or leave it’ while you’re on your holiday.

Stomach upsets can also be caused by bad hygiene so make sure that you wash your hands thoroughly before preparing or eating food.

DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) happens when a blood clot forms in one of the body’s deep veins. This tends to happen when a person has been inactive for a period of time, as blood collects in the lower parts of the body, particularly in the lower legs.

Every year, DVT affects one in every 1,000 people in the UK, but there things you can do to reduce your chances of getting it. For example, when you’re on a long journey, try to do leg and calf exercises every half hour or if try and walk around. Make sure that you wear loose clothing from the waist down and ensure you are drinking plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.

Pharmacy tips: If you’re worried

You should apply sunscreen liberally before going out in the sun and make sure you reapply it every couple of hours throughout the day. Also, try to stay in the shade when the sun is at its strongest between 11am and 3pm. If you do get sunburn, cover the area immediately to prevent further damage. A cool shower can also help, as can applying After Sun. If your skin starts to feel itchy a few days later and you start to peel, use a moisturiser. You can of course avoid all of this by making sure you apply sunscreen and stay in the shade.

SUNBURN Sunburn is something that you should definitely not have to suffer with on holiday. Visit your pharmacy before you go to make sure that you have the correct sunscreen for your holiday. It is recommended that an adult wears a sunscreen with a rating of at least SPF15 and for a child, SPF30. It will of course depend on where you’re travelling to so ask your pharmacist for advice.

Pharmacy tips: Don’t be fooled by a cloudy sky. Just because you cannot see the sun, doesn’t mean that it won’t be causing damage to the skin.

Don’t forget your anti-malarial tablets: It only takes one bite to

become infected with malaria so make sure you take malaria prevention seriously.

The type of anti-malarial you need will depend on a number of factors including where you are going, your medical history, your age and whether you are pregnant. Ask your pharmacist for advice.

Pharmacy tips: Unfortunately, no anti-malarial tablets and travel vaccines are 100% effective so it is essential to use other bite-avoidance precautions such as mosquito nets to go around your bed, skin repellents and plug in vaporisers.

Must haves for a holiday health kit: Eye drops can help to

replenish moisture after the humidity of aeroplanes especially if you wear contact lenses. Painkillers can be used to treat back pain and headaches. They can also be used to treat high temperatures in children. Ear drops can help to treat the symptoms of ear infections - particularly common with children using swimming pools. Make sure you have a good supply of plasters, wound dressings and antiseptic creams for minor scrapes and falls.
