BUSINESS PROFILE Mark Hinchliffe, Owner of Inch Recycling Solutions Ltd clearly loves what he does. Walking around the 9,000 sq ft warehouse in Filham, Ivybridge- there is definitely something for everyone. Mark helps new businesses start ups and restaurant business breakdowns by buying and selling excess assets or whole closing businesses. There are even a few personal treasures with an exciting historical background…

Mark then applied for an accountancy position in Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. “I was only 21 so thought sod it I could do that!”. Mark attended his interview at the United Medical and Dental School, and 10 minutes after leaving the interview he was offered the position.

Whilst in London, Mark part completed his CIMA Qualification in Accounting, but after just over 3 years decided it was time to move back to Plymouth. “I had several accounting jobs with Hayes Accountancy temping and in my off days, I would help my father who had an alarm business, so one job was to help him pull cables around the barracks in Plymouth”. All this was to gain as much business experience as possible in as many different fields. He then set up a recruitment agency; called Mploy, with his brother Ben. “The agency did really well, it lasted until 2003 when employment law changes made it a difficult environment”.

Mark tells us that business doesn’t come without its struggles, explaining that Mploy went into liquidation. “Income started to drop as we had a big contract with Chelston Meadow with a high amount of staff there, law changes meant those employee could

obtain contracts direct with the council, so it became really difficult”.

So, how did he go from accountancy to Inch Recycling Solutions Ltd? When Mark met his wife, Alison in 2000- he alternated between living in the States and the UK for 6 weeks at a time again temping in Accountancy on each return visit. Then in 2002 I got offered a permanent role within the NHS. “After our first child was born I was fortunate enough to be able to work for the NHS from our home in North Carolina, so I worked for about 18 months like that”. Unfortunately, the NHS business section I worked for closed, Mark was offered a relocation to Newcastle but took voluntary redundancy. “They made some grave errors in the redundancy and my boss at the time and I set up a private company to recontract to the NHS for the production of the year end accounts”.

The money which we made from this we invested in new ventures.

“

t school I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I left when I was 16 and then I went to a training college”. One thing led to another, and they set Mark up with a job at an accountancy firm. Alongside this, Mark attended Business accounting at night school. “I really enjoyed it at Texas Instruments, I was the assistant accountant and eventually I progressed through the job to be on management training”.

Unfortunately, not long after they decided to close the Plymouth firm, so Mark lost his job.

“

Mark first decided he would start an electronics business after a 15 hour flight to Hong Kong from New York to visit a large electronics exhibition. “We had this money, and we had the company. So I decided I would be the buyer and my business partner at the time would run the warehouse and packaging back in the UK”. He tells us how they imported a camera- “we bought £50k worth of them; we spent £25,000 on a TV advert and we sold 4! But it was an experience to say the least and lead to a much bigger contract for us with Transcend”. Mark stayed in the States until 2009, the news of the recession and his dad’s deteriorating health meant he had to return to the UK once again.

In 2009, his brother Ben joined the Business. They ended up taking some excess stock from a large Plymouth based company and selling it on for a percentage.

As a result of this, other Plymouth companies were approaching Mark looking to sell their stock.

It seems Mark Hinchliffe is very much a Yes Man with logical thought and his accounting background helps a great deal. “A lot of it is very much calculated judgement and a touch of luck!” He tells us of a series of fortunate coincidencessomething that seems to happen a lot to this business owner! “One day someone approached me, asking if I buy office furniture. I said well I don’t know! But I went and had a look, and though- I could sell this. I went back to the office and this is how life works, within an hour someone called me saying they know a business setting up in Truro and they need 40 desks and a full office set up” Mark had a seller and a buyer in the same day.

Inch Recycling Solutions supports businesses that require equipment and often covers catering replacement (some emergency), new business start ups, expanding businesses and businesses that go into liquidation and need to sell stock.

“Our main category is anything commercial. We buy anything that has commercial value, or that I’m confident I can sell”. Mark tells us that his phone is like a 24/7 hotline “If something breaks down, people give us a ring and we’ve usually got something to replace it that we can get to them fast, at a fair price”. This tends to be pubs, cafes and restaurants and odd occasions late on a Saturday night! Marks second most in demand product is office supplies. “We are one of the preferred suppliers for one of

Inch Recycling Solutions don’t just offer their services to Plymouth and the surrounding areas. “We go everywhere. We recently purchased all the assets of a café in Carlisle, and a Bang Olfsen and Samsung repair centre in Swindon. We’ve done jobs in Mayfair in London, and in March we were in Penzance and Southampton”.

“If I sold it, it would have to go overseas to the States and would never return back to Plymouth. I wasn’t going to let it go, it deserved to stay in Plymouth”. Mark is looking to do something with it for the upcoming Mayflower 400 celebrations.

We ask Mark what his biggest struggle is, now that the business has grown. “Staff is always an issue. It’s such a varied job, people either love it or hate it. Luckily now I have a really good staff. A couple who stand out are Aaron who has been with me for about 2 years now, and Dan who is relatively recent but has fitted in perfectly. Also in the office Andrea is on maternity but hoping to return soon and my Mother is helping too. We’re getting bigger every day, so the challenges are, every day is going to be different”.

Whilst we were having a wander around the warehouse space, Mark stops to show us something he is particularly proud to be owning. A huge, 4 piece wall mural portraying the Pilgrim Fathers boarding the Mayflower. “I bought it about 3 years ago. We were doing a job at the Quality Inn and I spotted it”. The Mayflower House- later named the Quality Inn, was built to celebrate the 350th Anniversary of the Mayflower in the 1970’s, and the mural was commissioned to be behind the bar at the time.

“The Herald ran a piece to say it had gone missing, so I got in touch with them to let them know it was safe with me”. In January 2016, The Herald visited Mark to document the murals new home. As a result of this published article, Mark received a call from

Mark explains that his staff understands the importance of being sensitive in certain situations. “When someone’s just lost their business and I’ve done a deal to buy their assets, you don’t just want to go in there like a bull at a gate. I need staff who are sensitive to people’s needs, who understand what people are going through and who are respectful”.

So how has Inch Recycling solutions grown to fill a 9,000 sq ft warehouse to the brim with good quality stock? “We generally get customer through word of mouth. We’ve got a good rapport with customers and they trust me. Anyone who has not visited is always amazed after their first time”.

Somebody will come here for one item and leave with a van load; it’s just that kind of place!

Mark makes a call to the Hidden Olive, a start up business that he helped out in the past. “They hit a point of change, so I bought and swapped some of their items, the money that they received from this managed to assist them in changing their goals and now they’ve really boomed! I wonder how many of those restaurants and businesses out there wouldn’t have been able to start up unless they had access to good quality second hand stock?”

So what does the future hold for Inch Recycling Solutions? Mark tells us that he is not building a company with the intention of selling it. “I enjoy it too much. I get a real thrill from the deal, whether it’s £10, or £1000. You get three happy sides to the equation – Client, Customer and IRS. It’s not always about the money; it’s about putting someone together with an item that they didn’t think they could have or afford”.

The warm weather is finally here, and whilst it’s welcomed by most of us- it isn’t always good news for our furry friends. Heat stress in dogs is a serious issue, and owners need to be aware of the warning signs.

D

ogs have an inherent susceptibility to heat stroke, and can suffer within minutes. Unlike humans, dogs can’t sweat through their skin- so they rely on panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and nose to regulate their body temperature and keep cool. Imagine wearing a thick winter coat to the beach on a boiling hot day and you’ll soon understand why it’s important to protect animals in the heat!

A survey found that 38% of vet clinics had to treat dogs for heat stroke during the summer months last year. Given that this problem is preventable, this percentage is pretty high!

Signs you should look out for: Your pup is panting heavily gums & tongue might be bright pink or red Their mouth may be dry and tacky A flopping, lolling tongue They might lie down more than usual refusing to walk Vomiting lift their feet awkwardly if the floor is too hot paws may blister dizziness and stumbling as they walk So, with this in mind- how can we protect our pooches from the heat? Some things are just common sense, but when you’re busy soaking up the sun, it may be easy to forget these simple precautions for hot dogs!

Keep them hydrated!

Cooling Tricks

This one is perhaps the most obvious, but remember that water gets warmer over time. No one likes warm water and that includes our furry friends! Aim to keep their bowl topped up at least once every hour with cold, fresh water.

For smaller dogs, you can dunk a jerry cloth in ice cold water and tie it around your dog’s neck like a stylish bandana! Another trick that is effective for us humans too, is to place a bottle of iced water in front of a fan.

The fan then circulates the ice cold water around the air. Always give your pet some shade. When they get too hot they need somewhere to escape the heat. Some dogs don’t necessarily have common sense…

And will sit in the sun regardless of how hot they are so look out for the tell tale signs that it’s time to move them indoors.

Give them frozen treats Most pet shops offer a range of lactose free frozen treats for your dog, however you can easily make these at home. Gravy, chicken soup, puréed carrot all make delicious ice cold treats for your pet, just place the ingredients in ice lolly moulds and let them lick away! Alternatively, you can also freeze your dogs favourite treats in water- for a bit of fun and motivation in the sun.

Cooling Jackets This summer sees a rise in the amount of cooling jackets being bought for our pets.

Ranging from £8 to £40, they can be a great way to keep dogs cool- but how do they work? The vest needs to be dunked in cold water, and wrung out to get rid of any excess. The material that absorbs the water, but doesn’t make your pets fur wethence cooling them down! You do need to take the vest off and re-dunk it every few hours though, as the water evaporates.

Precuations for your pooch Don’t leave your dog in a car at any point.

The temperature in a hot car can doubleeven with the windows open. Another thing to avoid is taking your dog for a walk at the hottest point in the day. A good time is either very early in the morning, or closer to sunset around 9pm. You can test whether the floor is too hot for doggy paws by placing the back of your hand on the pavement. If you can’t leave it there for longer than 5 seconds then it’s too hot for paws!

The most important thing is to have fun with your pooch in the sun. It’s not often we are lucky enough to get weather this hot- so make the most of it!

BUSINESS PROFILE It’s been a year since OM last visited Malcolm Harrison and the team at M.H Associates. We’re invited back to the offices above the Tudor Rose Tea rooms on the Barbican, to see how the business has been getting on in that time, and what plans they have for the future.

Sitting down with Malcolm, and his son Gareth Harrison- we want to see how M.H Associates has been getting on since our last visit. “The object I’ve always talked about having is a one stop shop. People come here and I’ve got a number of businesses I can get them in contact with; mortgage advisors, solicitors, financial advisors to name a few”. Malcolm refers to his extensive network of businesses which he has close contact with to help perspective clients.

Gareth explains that the business has since acquired two new staff members.

“We still have our long term accounts assistant Peter Helm. Katarina Ragulikova, accounts assistant. We have my friend and photography business partner Laura Ridolfo working as our office administrator. We also have Helen Hyett, who is Laura’s sister. Helen started working for us in January after leaving her previous job as an office manager”.

Malcolm reminisces to when the business was still starting up “When I first started here in 2003 I used to sit around twiddling my thumbs thinking- I wish some people would come in!

Now I’ve taken on a tremendous amount of clients in the last 12 months alone”.

When we asked him to elaborate on his client base, Malcolm tells us that he now has over 470 clients for personal tax, 60 limited companies, “and I honestly don’t know how many clients we’ve got where we help them with their VAT returns. We also get the problem cases” Malcolm says as he points towards a pile of papers perhaps 2 feet off the ground. “There’s about 8 years worth of tax returns there, which I now have to sort through”.

alcolm Harrison is perhaps the most eccentric and unique accountant you’ll ever meet; something that he admits himself. As we walk up the characteristically uneven staircase of the building dating back to the 1640’s, we are invited into a meeting room adorned with colourful Brian Pollard paintings. Malcolm tells us he has some originals, so we take a short trip across the hall to the main office space and take a peek.

Malcolm is part of various organisations, and it becomes apparent that this is very important to him. He tells us that he is a Winston Churchill Fellow, and through this he has become a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. “I’m in and out of the house of Lords quite a bit!”. As the Queen is patron to the Winston Churchill Trust, Malcolm was invited to meet her in March 2015 on the 50th anniversary of Churchill’s death.

We can see that the framed photos are now hanging proudly in the office.

So what exactly is the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust?

We ask Malcolm to explain.

“When Winston Churchill died, there was money donated for a memorial. The money that was collected, invested and in 1965 the Memorial Trust came into being”. (www.wcmt. org.uk) The object of the Trust was for ordinary people to go overseas, research inspiring projects and bring back best practice to the UK. Every year, there are a series of categories that people can apply for.

such an advocate for the Trust because he was a part of it himself. In 1994, he applied for a fellowship in the training and education in industry category, having been proactive in developing a NVQ qualification for Railway Store Keepers whilst he worked for British Rail. Malcolm’s application was successful and in early 1996 he undertook a six week tour of railway operations in Hong Kong, Australia and USA, the information he gathered was put to good use in practices back here in the UK. One of the key features of the business, Malcolm took out a blanket policy for tax investigation insurance. “I negotiate with HMRC on behalf of my clients. What I do, I check. Sometimes there is an error in the system so I call up and try and put it right”.

Malcolm reinforces the fact that he still recommends his clients become part of the Federation of Small Businesses- that way; they’ve got tax investigation insurance.

Because of this, Malcolm found that he ended up with two types of clients, those who had insurance and could be reimbursed, and those without. “If you’ve got an enquiry, that takes a lot of man hours. So what I’ve since done, I’ve taken out a blanket policy that covers all of my clients, and is included in my fees”. This new blanket policy includes tax investigation insurance and a free 24 hour legal advice line.

Although he didn’t in the beginning; he enjoys doing the accounts work now. “I deal with a small group of clients; I can go and see them, have a chat and just let them know we are here if they need help- Just to give them reassurance really”.

Gareth also works with clients who operate within the construction industry and makes sure CIS certificates are up to date. “The construction industry scheme also includes professions which fall out of the usual construction remit including Decorators, Gardeners, landscapers, fencing, pavingit’s all to do with development so it comes under the CIS scheme”.

Gareth explains how he was involved with a group called the International Team which is part of the Boys’ Brigade - “We were a national group which came together twice a year, our projects were professionally run awareness projects which taught the BB members world issues”. The I-Team was partnered with Christian Aid and in 2001 Gareth was part of a group that travelled to Uganda in East Africa as part of a fact finding visit.

The trip was to see firsthand the work

which the Boys and Girls Brigade Association of Uganda does to teach the dangers of HIV/Aids in their local communities. They achieved this by using drama and dance, “By using this initiative, the HIV rate in Uganda went from one of the highest to one of the lowest in the world”.

The information which they gathered from the trip was used in a project entitled ‘On The Edge’ which was delivered to BB members back here in the UK, “this taught members of the work that goes on in other countries, and we challenged them to do something positive for their local communities”.The trip was funded by the government organisation The British Council and after returning from the visit the group was subsequently awarded Millennium Fellowships.

We ask Malcolm and Gareth what the future holds for MH Associates.

Malcolm tells us that since he took on the business, year after year the turnover kept growing and that he only wants that to continue. “Yes I would like to retire- but I don’t think my wife would let me! I do want to step back, but I’ve got to get everyone up to a level where I can then begin to taper my involvement down”.

Gareth Harrison, Malcolm’s son, joined MH Associates in September 2011. “I originally studied photography at the art college for a total of 7 years.” Gareth completed a number of different qualifications, including a National Diploma, a foundation degree and a one year BA (Hons) top up. “I started working here on Tuesdays only, doing the payroll”. As the business developed Gareth became more involved, eventually leaving his previous job to work full time in accountancy in 2015.

He tells us that he sees a very bright future for the business. “Once we complete more of our training it will allow us to take more of the workload

off of Malcolm, meaning he can go into semi retirement and eventually become an advisor”. Gareth explains he is currently working with the staff to implement some new procedures which will help with the running of the business and the handling of the paperwork. This is a change that Malcolm struggles with, saying he can never find anything!

Gareth finishes by saying he wants the business to continue to expand, and it may only be a matter of time before they may need to increase their office space.

Meanwhile, Malcolm was excited to be setting off on two back to back Alaskan cruises in 6 weeks time; working out the exact hours until he sets foot on the cruise ship. it’s alright for some!

ALL ROADS LEAD TO DARTMOOR

At more than 368 square miles, Dartmoor National Park is one of the largest and wildest areas of open county in the South of England. With it’s ancient woodlands, high granite tors and vast tracks of rolling woodland, Dartmoor may as well have been plucked right out of a fairy tale.

Dartmoor offers so much to do and see over its vast land scape, it is the perfect place to enjoy wild open spaces, dramatic tors and wooded valleys, rushing rivers and wildlife as well as the wonderful towns and villages. Read on to find out some of the best places in Dartmoor to spend your time this summer.

Castle Drogo to Fingle Gorge: This two hour round trip takes you past a dramatic castle and through an oak lined gorge to an ancient stone bridge and traditional pubs - some of the classic Dartmoor sights.

The hike along the river Teign starts at Castle Drogo, a fortress completed in 1930 and the last great castle to be built in England. From here the routes to Fingle Gorge are clearly signed.

Walk one way along Hunter’s Path, which traces down the spectacular wooded riverbank, where the kingfishers and wood peckers dart between shaded pools, and trout, and salmon and otters flourish in the clear water.

Hound Tor: The jumble of boulders that make up Hound tor provide one of the most easily accessible and expansive viewpoints in Dartmoor.

Doyle’s moorland classic, the Hound of Baskervilles, the tor is a gentle half mile walk from it’s carpark along grassy paths and dells. Look out for the letter boxes, grown up treasure trails - hidden between the crevices. At the top, you can see the rough peaks of several other tors, as well as Wildcombe in the Moor and Bowman’s Nose. To the southeast of the tor are the remains of a medieval village.

Dartmoor Prison: The Mad Axeman, Frank Mitchell, and the Acid Bath Murderer were both inmates at this granite prison in the mist wreathed town of Princetown.

Once a byword for the most violent crimes, Dartmoor - now Category C has a museum for the for the macabre minded, featuring makeshift weapons and confiscated escape gear. Most shocking is a razor mounted on the tip of a toothbrush and vicious knuckle dusters made of 6 inch nails. Most amusing is perhaps the time honoured classic of knotted bed sheets, once used in an escape attempt.

Ashburton: Dubbed the gateway to the moors, it is elegant town makes a good base for exploring the northern regions. Its fortunes were founded on cloth and mining; it is one of Dartmoor’s four stannary towns where tin was brought to be taxed. Its fine slate hung frontages house a prosperous looking selection of antiques shops, delis and cafes.

Bovey Castle: What Bovey Castle lacks in heritage - it is actually not a castle at all - it makes up for it in its breadth of facilities and superb views.

Set on a private sporting estate, it has an eighteen hole championship golf course, indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, fly fishing lake, croquet lawn, children’s play ground and an archery arena.

Bovey Castle is popular with families but still large enough for couples to find a cosy corner. Huge stone fireplaces ornate panelling and squishy sofas make it one of the most comfortable places in Dartmoor to while away an afternoon

Haytor: Haytor is probably the most visited tor on Dartmoor, its huge granite mass is and has been depicted on numerous postcards, sketches, paintings and photographs. It is perhaps the most visited tor on Dartmoor - this is not only due to the fact it is highly accessible but also because of the gigantic masses of rock which crown its summit, the largest piles, which taken as a whole upon the moor are unmistakable.

Haytor consists of two distinct tors; the highest, the first tor you reach, can be climbed using steps and grab irons whilst the lower tor is more of a challenge.

From the summit rocks of Holwell Tor from where there is an excellent view of Becka Brook Valley and the surrounding countryside.

Canonteign Falls: Canonteign, home of England’s Highest

Waterfall (220ft), is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a breathtaking mix of waterfalls, lakes and cascades, surrounded by a spectacular rock formations in a magnificent woodland setting.

There is something to interest all at Canonteign, children and adults alike will enjoy the ambience and the experience that is unique to this special attraction.

Canonteign Falls is a magnificent example of a Victorian folly set in a magical natural paradise. The waterfalls themselves descend for over seventy miles, making this one of the most breathtaking attractions in Devon and providing a wonderful day out for all the family.

Meldon Viaduct: The Meldon Viaduct was built in 1847 and spans 165 meters over the remains of mineral mines. The views from the viaduct span across to Meldon Dam and reservoir to the South West. The views of this dam almost 50 meters high are as impressive as the original engineering feat. Down the

valley is Meldon Pool - the old limestone mine that still has two lime kilns.

The trip up to this sort is worthwhile purely for the view of Dartmoor from such a well placed vantage point. Whether industrial history or natural beauty inspire you, you will not be disappointed.

Lydford Gorge: The combination of unique geology, water and climate change has fashioned the deepest river gorge in the South West, providing a truly breathtaking experience which has been enjoyed since Victorian times. You can explore the gorge with a choice of adventurous walks from one to three miles.

Throughout the seasons there is an abundance of wildlife and plants to see, from woodland birds to wild garlic in the spring and fungi in the autumn. There are car parks and tea rooms at either end of the gorge. There are a range of events planned throughout the year. With strenuous walking, rugged terrain and vertical drops, this adventure is not for the faint of heart.

REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE From May the 8th onwards, Plymouth City Council changed the bin collections in Plymouth to an alternate weekly system. This meant that they collect your recycling one week and your non-recyclable rubbish the next. Because of this change, we felt it was important to highlight ways in which you can reduce your waste, recycle successfully and reuse things that you would normally throw away, to limit the amount of unnecessarily overfilled bins!

he more we recycle- the more money the council saves and the better it is for the environment. You’d be surprised by just how much you can actually recycle- up to 70% of your waste could be reused or recycled in some way. There’s a lot more to recycling than just putting things in the right coloured bin.

In the UK, we produce 177 million tonnes of waste every year.

The vast majority of this is food wastesomething that can easily be avoided. The next biggest perpetrator for waste is the packaging that this food comes in, such as plastics. It is estimated that the disposal of food and drink waste from UK households costs £12.5 billion each year. Read on for ways that you can reduce the amount of waste your household produces, resulting in a happier environment, and bins that don’t overflow!

The best possible solution to less waste is to not create it in the first place. Say no

to single use bags. From October 2015 all major supermarkets introduced a 5p charge for plastic carriers. Think of it this way, the average weekly shop uses 4-5 bags. That’s 25p every week, £13 a year on plastic that takes on average, 450 years to decompose. Buy a re-usable bag costing 10p, save yourself some cash and stop that unnecessary build up of waste.

Food is the number one cause for waste in the UK. If you live in a large household, it can be hard to monitor how much food you are actually throwing away. The same can be said for people living alone. Not enough supermarkets cater for one person households, which leads to a massive increase in food waste. So what can we do about it?

Sounds simple but always make a shopping list! Plan your meals for the week. Don’t overindulge and don’t buy things that will perish quickly, knowing you may not eat it. Before you leave for the supermarket, remember to make a note of odd bits and bobs that you have in the fridge or cupboards, so you don’t buy doubles, and

you can focus on ingredients to go with these to make a meal.

Sainsbury’s have a really good section on their website called ‘food rescue’.

Here, you can input any leftovers you may have in your cupboard, and it gives back yummy recipes using these ingredients.

So, if your cake’s best before date was 2 days ago and it still feels pretty squidgy, it would be perfectly fine to indulge!

Most perishable foods can be frozen.

This is in particular a great tip for small households and students. Meat for example- when you buy a large pack, portion it into freezer bags, and freeze individually. That way, you are only cooking what you need, when you need it.

Get creative and Re-use There are lots of little ways you can reuse your plastic bags, some of which are extremely simple and often handy. Pour used bacon grease into a tuna or cat food can, chill until firm, and wire the can to a tree to give your feathered visitors some food. Bacon grease may be gross to some of us, but it attracts bluebirds, crows, jays, ravens, starlings, woodpeckers and Carolina wrens.

If you are the crafty type, you can reuse your old clothes by giving them a revamp.

Cut your old jeans into shorts; you can cut up old colourful tops and add them as patches onto your jeans. You can transform a large shirt into a summer dress by adding an elastic waistband and cutting the cuffs. The possibilities are endless!

Recycle- Do it right!

Plymouth City Council have a section on their website where you can check your

The green bin can obviously hold anything that can be recycled- have a look on the packaging if you are not sure. However, remember that you can’t place paint cans, plastic bags, or polystyrene.

The brown bin can hold anything nonrecyclable apart from Asbestos, car batteries, chemicals, flammable items fluorescent tubes, hazardous waste or hot ash.

Staying Safe In The Sun W

hile it’s good to expose the skin to some sunshine for vitamin D, many of us choose to stay outside, soaking up the rays, for far longer than we should.

Although sun cream should be worn to protect skin from the sun, other precautions should be taken – wearing sunglasses with UV protection, covering up with loose clothing and a hat and staying out of the sun between 11am – 3pm when the sun is strongest.

Unfortunately us Brits rarely get to enjoy warm weather, but when we do, we need to understand why it’s so important to protect our skin.

BUYING SUN CREAM You might have a few favourite brands when it comes to sun cream, but packaging and price is never as important as the UV protection they offer. Everyone should wear at least SPF15 in the sun, and look out for UVA protection of 4* or higher. Children and anyone with fair skin should look for SPF50 to protect their skin better.

UVB – These rays cause sunburn, and are what the SPF helps to protect against UVA – These rays don’t cause sunburn, but deeply penetrate the skin and cause aging Some sun cream is advertised as ‘water

resistant’, but remember that this is different to ‘waterproof’. It simply means that the SPF protection will last a little longer in the water than standard sun cream, but it will eventually wash-off, particularly after drying off with a towel.

KEEPING KIDS SAFE Children’s sun cream often has a high SPF and less chemicals than that of regular sun cream, to make it kind to sensitive skin. It can be a challenge to get wriggling, excited kids covered in sun cream, but it should be re-applied regularly throughout the day.

Babies under 6 months should be kept out of the sun completely, and children, particularly those with fair skin and freckles, should stay in the shade as much as possible. Swimsuits which cover a lot of the skin are a good idea, as are hats and t-shirts to cover up.

Just one painful sunburn at any age can increase a person’s risk of melanoma.

APPLYING SUN CREAM Sun cream should be re-applied as regularly as possible, particularly after swimming, regardless of the SPF level.

This ensures that if you apply SPF30 at the start of the day, you’ll continue to wear that level of protection throughout if you keep it topped up. Even once-a-day sun

An adult should be looking to use about two tablespoons of sun cream to cover their entire body while wearing a swimming costume. Skin should feel completely covered, almost greasy to touch, not forgetting the tops of the ears, eyelids and feet.

A lot of people burn their scalp and hairline in the sun, but you can buy scalp and hair sprays which are usually in the form of a dry oil and can be sprayed directly onto the parting and any other areas exposed to sunlight. This is particularly important for those with red or fair hair, but wearing a hat is an even better option to sunscreen.

ARE YOU GETTING YOUR EIGHT HOURS? M ost of us know that getting enough sleep is important, but not many of us actually make those eight hours between the sheets a priority. For the majority of us who are sleep deprived, we’ve forgotten what feeling ‘fully rested’ actually feels like. And to further complicate matters, stimulants like energy drinks and coffee, alarm clocks, mobile phones and TV, all contribute to a unsatisfactory night’s sleep and disrupt our natural wake/ sleep cycle.

These figures seem great, if you could actually achieve them. For many of us working full time jobs, working overtime, or simply bringing up a family, 8 or 9 hours sleep might seem a little out of reach. We spend one third of our lives asleep, and it has a massive impact on our overall health and wellbeing. So maybe now is the time to start prioritising a good night’s rest.

According to The National Sleep Foundation, one of the best things to do is to try and factor in a sleep schedule. This doesn’t

mean printing out weekly charts and writing down specific times you must fall asleep.

It simply means sticking to the same wake up and sleep times every day, even on the weekends. Aiming to get into bed at roughly the same time every night means your body gets programmed into thinking that it’s time to settle down. If you are someone who takes at least an hour to settle, try and get into bed an hour before so you’re not sacrificing any valuable sleep time by staring at the ceiling. The same goes for waking up, this may seem like torture to many of us, but if you get into the habit of waking up at roughly the same time every day- even on your precious weekends, you will feel more

refreshed and will find it a lot easier to get out of bed, because its habit!

Most of us are glued to our devices all day long, and our phone is the last thing we check before we go to bed and the first thing we see when we wake up. In order to get a good night’s sleep we need to break this habit.

Most of what we know about sleep has only been discovered in the past 25 years, and recently the National Sleep Foundation released the results of a World-class study that took more than two years to complete.

They have come up with a detailed update on how much sleep we actually need at each age bracket. Newborns get the better end of the deal with a recommendation of between 14 and 17 hours. Young Adults and Adults are recommended between 7 and 9 hours, and the elderly need between 7 and 8 hours rest.

Studies have shown that being exposed to the blue and white light given off by laptops, phones at night prevents our brain from releasing melatonin.

Melatonin is something our body releases to make us sleepy, so It is suggested that we stay away from all things electronic at least one to two hours before bed time.

For those of us who simply do not have the time to get more sleep, there are things that can be done to make the sleep we do manage to get more beneficial. It is suggested that you replace your mattress every 8 years to keep it in top condition.

This paired with top quality pillows that really send you off can make your sleep a lot more fulfilling. Getting a good night’s sleep affects the rest of your day. If you are able to reach the golden number of hours, you will definitely notice the changes it brings.

Feeling more alert, waking up is a lot easier and your concentration is better to name a few. So why not set yourself a goal and get more sleep starting now.
