Summer is finally upon us! As your children spend more days soaking in the sun and chasing ice cream trucks, it's important to mix in academic activities to prevent summer learning loss.

Research shows that the equivalent of one month of overall learning is lost after summer vacation.

In this guide, you will find resources to help prevent the "Summer Slide." From Plymouth Public Schools reading lists and math packets for all grades, to camps and activities that will help keep your child's science and history knowledge proficient.

This guide is full of helpful information.

Dear Plymouth Public Schools Community, As we close out the 2021-2022 school year, I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who supported our 7,382 students throughout this year. I am incredibly proud of the work that has been accomplished across the district and would like to recognize our amazing teachers, support staff, and administrators. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our parents and caregivers for their unwavering support as well as our students who have continually impressed us with their perseverance and resilience.

We asked a lot this school year and everyone has responded with steadfast dedication to our students and this community. This summer represents a much deserved opportunity to rest, relax, and recharge. I look forward to welcoming everyone back in late August.

As we close the school year, I want to wish you all a safe and happy summer. It’s now time for us to get ready for what I know will be an amazing 2022-23 school year. Our administrative and support staff will be hard at work over the summer to get our schools ready for students on August 30th, the first day of school.

Please take a moment to review this comprehensive Summer Learning Guide which includes a plethora of resources and activities for you and your child to consider during the summer months. I’d like to thank our leadership team for putting this great resource together for our students and families.

SUMMER READING

Research shows that frequent independent reading has a direct correlation to reading achievement and improves vocabulary and writing skills. We also encourage parents to read with their child, as reading aloud is another powerful way to enhance vocabulary, model fluent and expressive reading, and build listening comprehension. The more students read, the better readers they become - and it is just plain fun too!

Dear Families of Students Entering Grades 1 through 8,

MATH

Learning and growing doesn’t stop over the summer! You can help your student accelerate their learning with Freckle. Because the activities are fun and adapt to your student’s level, they will love to continue their math practice on Freckle during the summer months.

Freckle is accessible through your child’s Plymouth Clever account 24/7, wherever an Internet connection is available. Since Freckle is continuously challenging students, using Freckle throughout the summer can boost learning and prepare students for the next school year.

Please know, this summer work is OPTIONAL and will NOT be graded upon return in the fall. However, AWARDS will be given to our top Freckle mathematicians when we return to school after the summer break!

Here are 4 ways to promote learning with your student this summer: Set a learning schedule and stick with it.

Set weekly goals and challenges.

Talk with your student about what they are learning on Freckle.

Celebrate success when your student reaches a goal or makes progress.

Finally, in order to move our system over to the 22-23 school year, the last day students will be able to access their current Plymouth Freckle account will be August 12, 2022.

After that date, their Aspen/Clever access will be restricted until school begins on August 30th.

Intermediate Concert Band & Orchestra Orchestra August 1-5 Concert Band August 8-12 9:00-2:00 PM | Held at PNHS $250 | Register here

The intermediate program is designed for students entering grades 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year with at least one year of instrumental experience that are working to improve their technique. Instructors will work with these musicians on sharpening their skills and expanding what they already know to make them better musicians. During the week, intermediate students will learn level-appropriate music theory concepts and techniques necessary to perform at an intermediate level. The week will culminate in a concert, demonstrating what the students have learned.

Students entering grades 7 through 9 will spend a week learning about the basics of contemporary a cappella (part singing, soloing, beatboxing, arranging, and more) and prepare songs for an informal performance at the end of the week.

Open to students entering grades 8 through 12. Openings in all wind instruments, drums, mallet percussion, and color guard!

Instrumental Exploration It is highly recommended that any student planning on participating in the instrumental program in the 2022-2023 school year participate in this program. Our beginner program is for any students entering grades 4-6 for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year with no prior experience in instrumental music. Instructors will work with these students to prepare them to succeed in concert band and string ensembles. Musicians in this program will learn basic music theory concepts necessary to perform at a beginner level and basic concepts for playing instruments offered in our *must participate in Level 1 program to take part in Level 2 program. Upon completion of the program, these musicians will be prepared to perform with their school’s concert ensemble. (Students will not need an instrument for this program and will not be choosing an instrument for study until the Fall.)

HELP US IN THE GARDEN THIS SUMMER!

As part of a community-wide initiative to build edible gardens in our town, Healthy Plymouth and Terra Cura, Inc. are looking for garden helpers this summer at the Plymouth Schools.

We invite you and your family to sign up for a week or two, 1-2 visits per week, to help water, weed, and harvest the raised garden beds. Hands-on training will be offered and a garden task sheet will be available.

This is a great activity for families, friends, youth groups, garden and environmental clubs as well as local organizations. You are the Historian Investigating the First Thanksgiving BEGIN GAME

Plimoth Patuxet Museums has reimagined and redesigned "You Are the Historian: Investigating the First Thanksgiving," its popular interactive game that has entertained school-aged children and families for almost two decades! The game investigates the interactions between the Wampanoag people of Patuxet and colonists of Plymouth, known as the Pilgrims, through archaeological artifacts from the museum’s collections, primary source documents, and oral histories.

"You Are The Historian" transports players to Patuxet and immerses them in a story of cultural change and persistence over 12,000 years. Warning! Magical time travel, an anonymous tipster, mysterious riddles, historic artifacts and mind-bending activities are just ahead.
