A twin triumph for Telford students

T

ELFORD twins Enrique and Nisa Mendez have double the reason to be grateful to their local college, after it helped them both to secure their dream jobs.

Enrique is now working with engineering giant Rolls-Royce after completing a motor vehicle course at Telford College of Arts and Technology.

And Nisa is using the art and design skills she first developed during her time at TCAT in her role as managing director of a new beauty and coffee bar business called Powerful Organic.

The 26-year-old pair, from Priorslee in Telford, are former pupils of the Sutherland School.

Enrique used his TCAT motor vehicle qualification to land a place on a Mechanical Engineering degree course at Staffordshire University.

He said: “My time at TCAT enabled me to get the qualifications I needed to gain experience within the motorsport industry, where I studied to be a race technician at the National College for Motorsport Silverstone.

“From there I wanted to gain a theoretical understanding of mechanical engineering principles, and with the qualifications from TCAT, I was able to go to university, and then secure a job with RollsRoyce.”

He added: “To anyone thinking of a course at TCAT, I’d say that all the experience you pick up will benefit you greatly.”

Enrique’s twin sister Nisa used her TCAT BTEC art and design qualification to secure a place at Wolverhampton University, studying Architectural Design Technology.

EPTEMBER 11 seemed far away when we decided to arrange a charity day for (Skyla) on behalf of Make A Wish foundation charity.

On February 17th 2016 Skyla, a fun loving little girl with a beautiful smile, was diagnosed with Leaukemia (a life threatening condition) this little girl only three years old, like many other children faced many hours, days and months in hospital, and lots of medication.

Travelling between Telford Children’s Hospital and Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The care and support given by both hospitals was tremendous.

During her time in Birmingham Children’s Hospital in the first weeks of Skyla’s illness, two children’s charity’s came forward. Make A Wish Foundation and Molly Olly’s.

Both charities granted Skyla’s wishes, Make A Wish foundation granted her a wish - a trip to Disneyland Paris, with the whole family when she is well enough to travel. Molly Olly’s gave her a pink TV and ipad. The TV is in her bedroom and the ipad goes with her when she is in hospital.

Back in June, we decided to raise money for these two very rewarding charities. Our target was £500, as a team we sold raffle tickets, cakes, played games like guess the name of the bear and much, much more. Our valued friends, clients and people who we did not know came forward with raffle prizes, donations and home baked cakes.

Sue, Barry, Bobby, Ryan and all the staff of Deighton Hair, Choppin Block Hair and Beauty and Illusions Hair and Beauty would like to thank everyone who have given their time, generosity and love to our charity. Also a big thank you to the Wellington traders and local supermarkets for the gifts and donations and the bucket collections. Also Telford and Wrekin Council for the permission to do

street collections, and our friends who gave their time in all weathers collecting with buckets.

The charity day was just perfect, the sun was shining down on us, and we hosted a local charity Ukulele band ‘Side By Side Ukes’, who played various types of music, whilst our young supporters danced to the music.

Outside we were face painting.

Inside our dedicated staff all gave up their Sunday to help raise money, working on clients styling hair and beauty treatments. So we must say a big thank you to our staff who were providing refreshments for our friends and clients. Whilst all the hustle and bustle downstairs was going on upstairs we had Mystic Jane reading tarot cards, again she gave her time to raise money for the day. The day was brilliant, just a perfect day. We raised £630 on that day only.

We are still pushing on with the fund raising events and we still have two days with our buckets in local supermarkets to do and a secret auction through Shifnal Golf Club.

EVANS This is the story of our Remembrance Day parades in Wellington from their beginning after the Great War of 1914 to 1918 to last year, as I know about them, together with a few thoughts of my own.

Rememberance Day M in Wellington Y father, who was wounded twice in 1917, was there in 1920 (three years before I was born) and I was there last year. Between those two years the parades have varied in size a great deal.

Recent Remembrance Sunday parades were extremely well supported, partly because of the Town Council, the Town Band and our excellent Parade Marshall. Many of us have been astonished and delighted at the number taking part despite the Legion’s fewer members. The number left with experience of a world war will soon be none. Let’s hope the weather is tolerable this November. Public respect for soldiers is increasing.

The first parades were large, with many old soldiers from the recent war, most in the newly formed British Legion; it always took place on Armistice Day, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Years later it changed to Remembrance Sunday, being held on the nearest Sunday to 11th November

and more recently the British Legion changed to the Royal British Legion.

My dad attended the parade every year, but as one of many wounded soldiers he couldn’t march because of a bullet hole in his left leg. He was a founder member of the Legion, formed to help the war’s survivors and to put pressure on the Government to treat old soldiers better. He had been so disgusted at his ungrateful treatment that he threw his medals away. After the Last World War he led his platoon of ex-Home Guard men, including me, at the service until unable to do so.

Until it was abolished by boundary changes in 1974 the Urban Council organised the local parade, which went well despite the diminution of Legion numbers due to old age or death of those who

served in 1939 - 1945. Nowadays there are only a very few of us left to remember the many personal friends we lost; it’s more personal than the younger marchers. As I used to say, before being dismissed, “We who are left grow old.”

When the WUDC was ended, so was our parade.

Wrekin Council, who took over WUDC’s duties, would not organise it and Wellington had no council then. Our Civic Society was formed to speak

Wellington In The Great War by local author Christopher Owen will be launched locally on Saturday 22 October in Wellington Library from 10am to 4pm during a showcase event called ‘Meet the Authors’.

As part of the Wellington Festival, ‘Meet the Authors’ will be attended by many other local authors who will be showcasing and promoting their books.

for the town in 1948 and felt we needed a Town Council who would be in a better position, so after ten years campaigning against much initial opposition, WTC was born. One of the first propositions was to run a Remembrance Sunday parade. It was not well organised or supported but was a start. We have had strange events, like when there was one piper or when a car with a tape recorder played a recording of horses lead but gradually there was better organisation and more people joining. We had arguments over whether rifles should be allowed and whether we could march at light infantry pace.

Then, eventually, we had the WTC, Town Band and Parade Marshall and the event became much better supported until nowadays there’s talk of a turnout of over a thousand, though I don’t think anyone has ever counted us. It’s now a very fine parade and a credit to the organisers, the Council, the Town Band, especially their bugler, all those taking part including the few Legion members who lead and especially the Parade Marshall.

One could criticise the marching of some organisations, especially those unused to military drill, who should not be blamed for being out of step, including Rotarians, Scouts, Councillors and others but it’s unfair to do so. The Cadet Units were excellent last year; it grieves me, an ex-infantryman, to admit that the Air Cadets were best. The turnout from Churches is now from all the Christian Churches, which is a significant improvement though I would really like non-Christian religions, Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus, some of whose ancestors fought on the side of Britain. The smartest soldiers I ever saw were a pair of Ghurkhas who laid a wreath in Wellington one year.

What worries me now is that the event has many things missing that should be included, especially thought. With very few of those present actually knowing any friends killed in war, things have changed. It is becoming a festival of triumphalism by Nationalists. No part of it seems dedicated to thinking about the consequences of war. I would now like to ask readers and perhaps especially the Clergy,to listen to those of us who have actually experienced the horrors of war, rather than watch fictional films, read fictional magazines or books or listen to those without memories to share.

Another problem is that the majority of those who were killed in our wars since 1914 are not even mentioned in the service. Why don’t we include the civilians? And how about our allies? And if we were really Christians we would mourn our enemies, especially those we killed.

Jesus did teach us to love our enemies didn’t He? Let’s hope some of the clergy will introduce His teaching into the Lych Gate service. I’m barred.

I certainly still feel guilt at having probably killed men in Normandy.

Respect is due to all who died for their country surely but only some are remembered in the service. Of course there should be a parade and we should take our part, bringing our children to teach them about wars but we should also encourage them to think for themselves about the nature of war and its horrors and evils. We have every good reason to respect soldiers, dead and alive and this respect is increasing. But are there reasons to respect the politicians who have sent our brave young men to their deaths? I think not.

I’m hoping to lay a wreath of white poppies.

GB ICE HOCKEY TARGET FOR YOUNG GRACE G RACE Garbett, 13, travelled to Finland at the end of August with England U14s Girls for a week of specialist training and matches against top-flight Finnish sides, including the national team squad.

The Thomas Telford School student has been selected for the GB U18 women’s squad and is now working hard at regular training sessions in Sheffield in preparation for her first match call-up.

Last season Grace was the highest scoring girl of her age in the UK – both in the mixed U13 league playing for Telford Tigers, and in U16 Girls, with northern league champions Sheffield Shadows.

During the trip to the Kisakallio Sports Institute, 40 miles north of Helskinki, Grace was able to train with top ice hockey skating instructor Lari Joutsenlahti and also tried canoeing, curling and kin-ball.

Grace said: “Playing and training in Finland was an amazing experience. The Finnish teams were very strong and showed us the level we would have to reach to be able to compete in the Olympics.

“Finland is a beautiful country and Kisakallio has a fantastic set-up for athletes doing lots of different sports.”

Remembrance Sunday

Wellington will see an annual parade through the streets on Sunday 13th November 2016 to mark Remembrance Sunday.

The parade will leave the Nailor’s Row car park in the centre of Wellington at 10.25am. It will turn right into New Street, march through the Market Square and into Church Street, pass The Lychgate (in front of All Saints Church) in time for the short (outside) service, which, this year, will be held on the grassed area in front of All Saints Church.

Following the service, at approximately 11.15am, the parade will march—by the same route in reverse—back to The Parade car park for dismissal at approximately 11.40am.

The Mayor will take the salute in the Square as this is done.

There will also be a service held on Friday 11th November 2016 at 11.00am in the Market Square.

ID wealthy property owner Samuel Turner and his sister Lucy realise what they were starting when they established a Methodist Sunday school in a tiny building on Hadley’s High Street in the 1850s?

The Sunday school prospered over the next 50 years growing in numbers to more than 150 children attending morning and afternoon sessions boosted in 1866 when Hadley Methodist Church was built on its High Street/ Manse Road corner site.

Those original premises, now a private residence, were later to serve as a cabinetmaker’s workshop, barber’s shop and ironmongery, while the nearby church was extended in 1890 by the building of the schoolroom to accommodate Sunday school pupils.

October marks 150th anniversary of the chapel building with an exhibition of village and chapel photographs on Saturday October 8 (between 2pm and 5pm) and a celebratory service held on the following day at 10.30am and conducted by minister, the Rev Hendry Ponniah.

Personalities from the past will be recalled in the exhibition not least the role played by leading industrialist Yorkshire man Lieutenant

CELEBRATING 150 YEARS Saturday 8 & Sunday 9 October

October marks 150th anniversary of the chapel building with an exhibition of village and chapel photographs on Saturday October 8 (between 2pm and 5pm) and a celebratory service held on the following day at 10.30am and conducted by minister, the Rev Hendry Ponniah.

Colonel James Patchett, managing director of the Shropshire Iron Company based at Trench Lock, and his wife Harriet.

The Colonel - as he was known - was leader of the Sunday school, conducting it in a military fashion and having a large army of supporters, many of them employees who served as Sunday school teachers guiding several generations of Hadley’s working class children in the Christian faith.

Music always played a large role in church services and concerts not least under the guidance of Mr Percy Morgan who serve as choirmaster for many years before handing over the baton to his daughter Mrs Joyce Rogers in the 1960s who by that time had led the award-winning Hadley Girls Choir earning plaudits for its BBC radio broadcasts and concert appearances, her husband Peter accompanying.

Sunday school anniversary services were held on two Sundays in May and became legendary with people arriving up to an hour before the service to ensure a seat to hear a platform of whitefrocked girls and smartly-dressed young boys sing as part of an augmented choir.

The church also had its own drama group staging numerous plays and operettas during the war years and the 1950s with an annual pantomime continuing the music and drama tradition until the 1990s.

Local preacher and journalist Terry Gilder has researched the chapel’s history over the years, though often dogged by the loss of several minute books kept in an adjacent draper’s shop which was burned down to the ground in the 1950s.

Even so, he will be publishing a book called 150 years of Faith celebrating the anniversary and chronicling the chapel’s somewhat chequered history including a request from one of its ministers for permission to bury his wife within the church precinct.

The church national authorities rejected the idea because it would devalue the land’s value, so the clergyman’s wife was buried in Wellington ceremony - and within a few months the minister married a member of the congregation and departed for a new appointment in the South.

OUR piece about the Clifton Cinema in the current issue took me back to the war years (that’s WW2 not Great or Boer!). When my friend took me along to the Clifton Children’s Club on a Saturday morning.

My dear mother wasn’t very pleased, as she was very wary about what her little boy would see! (I was ten at the time!), but along I went.

The cinema was full of children of all sizes, ages and sexes, and the programme consisted of black and white support films what were then known as ‘B Films’. The evening performances had three or four features - a cartoon, the Pathe news (the only way we really got any idea of what was happening in the war) a ‘B’ or support film, usually black and white and the main film, either in colour or black and white. The ‘B’ films, if they were Westerns, were usually on Saturday mornings as we were a very uncritical audience. We had to be – the standard of photography and production were not of the best!

Most of the shots were studio mock-ups, so if you had two cowboys on horseback in closeup talking to each other, the same background cactuses kept appearing again and again. The horses were little more than saddles with a bit of leather ‘horse’ to fill the screen. If you looked closely you could see the rivets.

We all knew who were baddies and who weren’t, the good cowboys wore white tengallon hats and the bad guys had low crowned black Stetsons. If it was cowboys and Indians, the cavalry who rode ‘proper’ horses and whose uniforms had just come back from the cleaners. As soon as they appeared it was traditional for us all to stand up and shout ‘Cavalry!’ at the top of our voices.

Thinking of bad continuity, we had a colour epic about Rob Roy and in the battle scene Rob Roy raised his claymore above his head and we could see he was still wearing his wristwatch!

When they buried his father on an island, a little motor launch puttered along into shot.

When Olivier made ‘Henry V’ the battle scenes were originally shot in an RAF hanger, but the arrows kept sticking in the clouds so they took over a farmer’s cornfield in Essex. He was well compensated for the loss of his crop.

Apologies for all the waffle - the mitherings of an ancient Wellingtonian.

> Hadley Methodist Church exterior in the 1940s Liberal Party and appeared to believe that he could rule the roost persuading the chapel’s trustees to allow his friend, Wrekin MP Sir Charles Henry to hold a pre-election rally in the schoolroom.

Alas, he had broken Methodist law which forbade use of its premises for political purposes and after a bad-tempered meeting, he retreated to his Haybridge Hall home and almost severed links with the church, although on his death in 1927 his funeral was held there.

This man of principal had often clashed in the early years of the last century with the vicar of the village’s Holy Trinity Parish Church, the Rev William Brown McNab, who had rejected an invitation to a meeting of the British and Foreign Bible Society declaring that he was not in favour of the Bible being in the

hands of ordinary people.

The Colonel had retorted that such a remark was a ‘libel against God’ declaring: “Some folk didn’t want the sons of toil to develop their brains but kept down like serfs.” The spat between the two men was aired publicly throughout the columns of local newspapers.

These days relations between Hadley’s churches are friendly, Holy Trinity members combining with the Methodists on various occasions while the Methodists receive warm support of the Elim Pentecostal Church at all of their regular Wednesday morning Open Door coffee morning get together.

Today’s congregation is small compered with the last century but the theme of the October 9 service will be one of thanksgiving for those who have kept the faith in the past and look with optimism to the future.

TAKE much pleasure in discovering coincidences. All those seemingly disparate things that unexpectedly share some common connection. As recent readers may be aware, I moved from Wellington many years ago and now work in Newport, Gwent. Obviously, Shropshire has its equivalent namesake but imagine my surprise when I learnt that one of my colleagues had once lived in Admaston and then moved to Newport (Shropshire), before ending up in Newport (Gwent).

Somehow or other, we also established that we had followed the same route in Wellington for our respective driving tests. The only difference was the outcome: she passed and I failed. This was not entirely surprising given the fact I scraped the wing mirror driving over a narrow bridge down Orleton Lane and was forced to go in the wrong direction around a roundabout near Blessed Robert Johnson School because a lorry was in the way. Nevertheless, this is not the only tie I have uncovered between my home town and my adopted South Wales. To the northwest of Newport lies the suburb of Rogerstone, which has a strong yet often overlooked link to Telford dating back to the late 19th century. And it is a link that is forged of steel.

Hadley was once home to Nettlefolds, a business that used to manufacture of steel products, such as screws. The plant was known as Castle Works because of the nearby Hadley Castle which, though resembling a fortified structure, is actually a former windmill without the sails. However, with increasing costs and competition, the owners decided to relocate the factory to Rogerstone, promising jobs to their existing employees.

The construction of the new Castle Works, for the original name was retained, took place under the supervision of Edward Steer and in 1885, many of the Shropshire men and their families (known as “Shroppies” to the Welsh locals) headed south.

Obviously, a great many homes were required for the migrating workers and there was extensive building work up until 1890. As a reminder of their roots, the Shroppies were accommodated in houses along newly constructed roads called Hadley Street and Wellington Street, names which endured until the 1970s when they were demolished.

Members of Rogerstone Football Club from the 1892/3 season The Shroppies were also responsible for bringing football to Rogerstone and a highly successful club was formed sometime between 1886 and 1889, although the exact date is lost to time. In an early photograph of the team from the 1892/3 season and which is possibly the oldest soccer picture in the whole of South Wales, the men proudly wear the emblem of a castle tower to signify their association with the Castle Works. Ironically, because the site was located by the ruins of Rogerstone Castle, many people mistakenly believed that the motif was a tribute to the latter. Players from those early days invariably had surnames common to Shropshire like Picken, Podmore, Roden, and Watkins. Some even went on to play for more successful sides like Aston Villa, including ex-Rogerstone captain, Joe Littlehales, who was nicknamed “Trousers” after turning up for a trial with the club without any shorts. Despite enjoying considerable success, however, the team was disbanded in 1906 for reasons unknown.

In the early 20th century, Nettlefolds merged with another company to form Guest, Keen & Nettlefolds (otherwise known by its more familiar abbreviation, GKN).

It continued to flourish and like all steelworks in the UK,

it came under Government control during 1915 so that its output could be dedicated solely to the war effort. Steps were also taken to prevent workers from volunteering to fight: such was their enthusiasm to enlist that there became a genuine shortage of skilled men to operate the factory.

After the Great War came the Great Depression and the steel industry was in no way immune to its effects. The cost of transporting steel from nearby Cardiff became too much of a financial burden for the company and eventually, the Rogerstone site was closed in favour of a more modern plant in the Welsh capital.

Although Castle Works, Wellington Street, and Hadley Street are long gone, there remain subtle ties back to Shropshire to this day. The Hadley Castle emblem is still used by the Rogerstone Welfare Cricket Club (founded by Shroppies in 1888) and there are plenty of Salopian surnames around. Indeed, I know of several completely unrelated people called Minton, though more often than not, their owners are completely oblivious to the origins of their ancestors.

But every time I encounter a Lutwyche or a Corfield or another Minton, I smile to myself and savour the sweet memory of my birthplace.

More exchange students named Wrekin News received the following letter from Jane Jones (nee Whittingham) who now lives in Hereford. Jane is on the photo of the German exchange students that we published in the September issue and can name her fellow students and teachers.

WAS given a copy of your magazine by my mum, who still lives in Wellington, as I am on the photo of the German exchange students. I didn’t get to email you the first time the photo was published but mum has told me you are still interested in details of the photo.

I can confirm it was taken at The Gate at Bratton and was a social evening for the pupils on the exchange and their host families. It was taken in October 1983 and was an exchange between pupils from the Charlton School, Dothill Wellington and German pupils from The Realschule Gosheim - Wehinghen. I believe it was not the only year that exchanges took place and remember our return trip to Germany the following February half-term. I am unfortunately no longer in contact with my pen friend in Germany.

NSC Walford Breeds Poison Dart Frogs Laura Pugh, an Animal Care Lecturer at North Shropshire College’s (NSC) Walford Campus has successfully bred a number of Blue Poison Dart Frogs; this is the first time in a number of years that the diminutive amphibians have been bred at the College. The frogs, which are famous for their toxic skin and bright colours, originate from rainforests in South America and for the safety of NSC staff and students are fed a diet that prevents their skin from becoming toxic.

Laura Pugh, Animal Care Lecturer, commented ‘I started the project about 12 months ago, with many unsuccessful attempts of actually getting a tadpole to hatch but now we currently have three frogs and seven tadpoles, it takes a lot of time and dedication to ensure correct temperature, humidity and feeding procedures are correct to successfully hatch and rear a frog, the whole process can take a few months.’

The expansion of any species within the animal care centre at Walford provides an enriching experience for students on both Animal Care and Animal Management courses.

Laura goes on to say, ‘Students have been involved with moving of tadpoles, feeding and cleaning, the students get to see lots of young animals and species that are easy to breed and that are parent-reared being out on the animal care unit but seeing and being part of rearing a Blue Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates tinctorius azureus) is something they may never get to see even when they pursue a career in the animal industry.’

CLIFTON COMMUNITY ARTS CENTRE LIMITED UPDATE

BUSINESS BREAKFAST AND FILM FESTIVAL NEWS Business Breakfast On the 13 September the Clifton Community Arts Centre held our first Business Breakfast.

Although not supported with as many local businesses as we would have liked, those present, including Mayor Cllr Morris-Jones heard fascinating presentations from David Jack, Manager of Theatre Severn and Geoff Vernon, Chair - Festival Drayton Centre. Both presenters spoke of how the local arts and community ventures had benefitted the local community and helped in rejuvenating their respective towns.

David Jack told of the struggle they had to transform the Old Market Hall to accommodate film and the initial opposition they had to the changes being made to the building. Now, it is a really successful independent cinema venue with some films being sold out immediately they are released, and the whole area is flourishing economically and socially as a result of this venue. Theatre Severn had also helped in the regeneration of the general Frankwell area.

A third presentation was given by the Finance Director of the Clifton – Ray Hughes, on the benefits of investing in a community benefit society and ways in which individuals and businesses could benefit financially. Film Festival Our “Four Continents” Film Festival is nearly over – and we begin our main stream films on the 1st October 2016 at 7.00 for 7.30 p.m. at the Belmont Hall in Wellington. We had small audiences by and large for the international films, but would like to thank those supporters who do not ordinarily attend foreign film festivals for their support. We all agree that we have learnt a great deal from watching productions (all of which had subtitles) from different parts of the world, different ways of directing and editing, and so very different storylines.

Details of the forthcoming mainstream films can be obtained at www.theclifton.org where electronic bookings are also available. If you do not have a computer, you can pick up a leaflet at our stall in Wellington market each Saturday from 9.00 a.m. to midday. Stamps for charity

Meadowdale Nurseries in Telford, have put a ‘call out’ today asking all of their customers to bring in their used stamps, in order to raise money for charity. All you have to do is simply tear off the stamps you receive in the mail and take them with you on your next visit to the Garden Centre and they will do the rest. The money raised will then be donated to the British Legion’s Poppy Appeal in Shropshire.

Kiloware, as it’s called, is the generic term for used stamps collected by charities and fundraising groups, which are then sold on to dealers and stamp collectors by weight.

Paul Roebuck, Director of Fundraising Stamps explains: “It really is as simple as it sounds. People just need to cut or tear the stamps off their mail, whilst leaving them on the backing paper and drop them off at the Nurseries. They will then send them to us in batches and we will sell the stamps by weight, donating the money raised to the Poppy Appeal.

We work with hundreds of charitable organisations across the UK, who have been delighted by the amount of money that has been raised.”

This form of fundraising has in fact been around for decades and for those of you old enough to remember

all of those Blue Peter Appeals, well this is exactly the same.

John Anderson, co-owner of the Nurseries, said: “We are always looking for ways that we can help fundraise for charities and thought this would be a really easy way to help raise money. We receive lots of mail through our business, but also wanted to give our customers the opportunity to get involved as well. It really is such a simple idea, that everyone can do, and which will hopefully make a huge difference.”

NEW HOMES COMPLETE AT TOWN’S OLD DEPOT

UR development of 31 new homes on the old Arriva bus depot site in Wellington is almost complete.

Homes have started to be handed over and the site will be finished by mid-September, ready for all new tenants to start moving in.

William and Sandra Luna are in the process of moving into the development and they are over the moon about their new home, especially after having to move so quickly out of their last property because the owners were selling up. They said: “We’re so happy to have the security of renting with The Wrekin Housing Trust, everyone we’ve dealt with has been so helpful and kind. This is a good area and the attention to detail in the house has been brilliant.”

Close to Morrisons and Wellington Town Centre, the site consists of one-bedroom apartments and two-bedroom houses, and replaces the old bus depot which was no longer in use. It has taken around a year to complete the site from demolition to now. Local people are pleased to see the site redeveloped and providing affordable homes.

Local people’s project afternoon tea Older people’s charity, Royal Voluntary Service is looking for people over 50 in the Hadley, Leegomery and Ketley areas of Telford to become members of a Local People Programme committed to improving services for older people in the area.

Earlier this year, older people in the area were awarded funding from People’s Health Trust to take action about the things that matter to them whether its access to services, more activities or building community support.

Using money raised by HealthFair through The Health Lottery, Royal Voluntary Service wants to support older people in the area to identify and address the issues that affect them – whether this is transport, communication or having nowhere to enjoy their hobbies.

Alex Lloyd from the Local People Programme in Telford, said: “We are starting by hosting afternoon tea at the Castle Farm Community Centre Wednesday 21st September 2pm until 4pm so come and join us, there will also be information about free workshops and activities in your area, anything from IT, cake decorating, crafts, etc. There will be tea, coffee and cakes and a free raffle.

The Local People programme takes a neighbourhood approach, engages local people and empowers them to address wider issues in their communities and neighbourhoods through collective action.

HOSE who have trees or hedges in, or near, your gardens will have the leaves falling soon, indeed you will probably already have had the first ones. These should be collected especially where they fall on grass as they will do serious damage if left. They exclude light from the grass and if this happens for a long period of time the grass can be killed leaving bare patches in the lawn. In addition they will hold moisture against the grass and this can lead to rot setting in which will again result in bare patches. If you have the space the leaves can, once collected, be stored as they produce very good compost, if allowed to rot down gradually. Push them into large plastic bags add some water to moisten them if they are dry.

The tops of the bags should then be tied and a few holes punched into the bag using a garden fork. Store these for six months, or more, and they will reduced to a small quantity of excellent soil improver which can be added to the garden or even used as a seed compost.

On the nursery we have found that cutting the hedges in early autumn (mid to late September)

has had a dramatic effect of the quantity of leaves we have had to collect off the grass as they are still attached to the pruning’s and are used on our compost heap.

We have had some high winds and should expect more soon so all tree ties and stakes should be checked to make sure that they will hold, but not strangle the tree after this year’s growth. Also check your fences, a quick repair to strengthen or replace a post now can save a large job later when that broken or rotten post has brought down a whole run of fencing.

This is the month when you should order bare root trees and shrubs from the nursery to be sure that your requirements will be met.

The actual plants will not, however, be available until all the leaves have fallen as they will not be lifted until the plants have actually become dormant for the winter. In recent years this has been in late November / early December.

This delay will however enable you to prepare the ground so they can be planted as soon as they are received, hence ensuring they will be out of the ground for the least possible time.

RAM MOT’s Rams are an often overlooked component of flock fertility – we all understand the importance of good ewe nutrition and preparation in the run up to tupping but a surprisingly large number of rams are found to be sub-fertile. A ram should easily be capable of serving 60 ewes and get 85% of these in lamb within the first 17 day cycle.

Don’t wait until scanning to find out if you have a problem – perform a ram MOT well in advance of tupping (ideally 8-10 weeks) so there is time to correct any problems. You need to look at 5 key areas: TEETH: Check for a broken mouth, over/undershot jaws and good occlusion of the teeth with the dental pad on the upper jaw.

Check for any signs of drooling or dropping of food from the mouth.

TOES: Any signs of lameness should always be treated as soon as possible but double check rams are moving around well – check for any signs of stiffness; lameness anywhere in the leg will affect a ram’s ability to mount. All 4 toes should point straight forward. Tip

and check all 4 feet – there is no need to trim the feet unless there are specific problems.

TESTICLES: You should assess the testicles either when the ram is tipped or from directly behind.

Feel them very thoroughly – they should be freely mobile and approximately the same size.

TONE: Overfat rams are also more prone to lie down so you should aim to keep them trim. If they go into tupping too fat then they are lazy but equally they will lose condition as they work so they should not be too thin – aim for a body condition score of 3.5-4.0.

If you discover any problems during the MOT then contact the surgery and one of the vets will be able to advise you on the best course of action.

If you really want to get the most from your breeding rams then we can carry out a complete fertility examination either on farm or at the surgery. In addition to a full veterinary physical exam we are able to collect a semen sample (through electroejaculation) and analyse this in house at the time.

These little dried up bitter berries are apparently loaded with amino acids, vitamin C, calcium, zinc, selenium and many other important trace minerals, plus are high in fiber.

I’m not doubting that they are, but for me, there are plenty of other foods that offer similar levels of goodness, which taste 1000000000000 times

better and are much more ‘user-friendly’, and of course pocket friendly. Tesco offer a 200g bag for £3.20, which is what I bought about a million years ago, and have been struggling to find ways to eat them up.

I’ve tried smoothies, topping porridge or overnight oats with them, but the easiest way I’ve found is in baking – mainly because the other ingredients mask their taste, or they plump up during cooking and are less chewy.

So, here is a quick and easy, healthy Halloween treat for children and adults alike.

You will need: 300g raisins 100g goji berries 100g desiccated coconut 50g pumpkin seeds 30g cashew nuts 80g pumpkin seeds 2 tsp of cinnamon (If needed) 1tbsp melted coconut oil

Add all ingredients into a food processor and whizz up until blended together.

If the mix is a little dry, add the melted coconut oil.

Roll into balls, and place into the freezer for 20 minutes then store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks in a sealed container.

That’s is – so simple and so tasty!

Cheese - It’s a truly magical food

T

HIS summer, at the end of July, the Nantwich International Cheese show took place once again.

The show is one of the largest and most prestigious cheese shows in the world, delivering an international cheese competition on the first day and throwing open its doors to the public on the second. A little over 5,500 cheeses from the UK, continental Europe, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, were entered into the competition classes, with judging undertaken by 250 volunteers selected for their knowledge and experience in matters cheese. At the heart of a judge’s skill must be the ability to differentiate good cheese from excellent and, importantly, to be able to root out entries that are inadequate, often for elusive reasons.

To the judges cheese is unquestionably a magical product, but for many consumers today it is sadly just another foodstuff: something taken for granted.

Next time you buy a piece of tasty cheddar, or perhaps something more exotic, take a moment to explore the amazing variety of cheeses available in our food marketplace. Give some thought to the incredible skills of cheesemakers, the wizards of the food industry that create such a remarkable foodstuff. These craftsmen take highly perishable milk and, by carefully controlling the biological and biochemical interactions between milk and microorganisms, turn it into something that is very nutritious and which, according to variety, can have an exceptionally long shelf-life. For instance, extra-mature cheddar cheese can be three years old when ready, but some parmesan cheese can reach seven years or more.

All cheeses are made using milk – commonly cow’s, goat’s or sheep’s – but with subtle variations in processes yielding very different products. Cheese making is based on firstly the fermentation of lactose, the milk sugar, to lactic acid by particular bacteria which may be native to milk, as in unpasteurised cheeses,

or added as a cheese starter, as with pasteurised cheeses. When sufficient fermentation has occurred and the acidity is right the enzyme chymosin, commonly called rennet, is added to precipitate casein, the major milk protein, to form cheese curd. When the curd has set suitably it is cut to allow whey to drain, concentrating the curd. The drained curd is placed in cheese moulds which shape the product and which, in some cases, are pressed mechanically to expel more whey. Depending on cheese type, salt is added at a given point in the process to arrest fermentation and act as a preservative along with the lactic acid.

Cheddar, the mainstay of English cheese production, uses only bacterial starter in its manufacture. Other cheeses such as stilton and roquefort use the fungal organism, Penicillium roqueforti, to produce characteristic blue veins, while camembert uses a different organism, Geotrichum candidum, to produce its white coat.

The bacteria used to make cheese such as cheddar release enzymes that break down milk protein and milkfat during maturation, developing characteristic flavours, aromas and textures. This is a slow process, taking many months. Mould ripened cheeses mature more rapidly because fungi are biochemically very active and act on milk protein and milkfat to deliver quickly the required qualities, often in a matter of weeks. This is why cheeses such as camembert ripen so readily.

Cheshire, home of the Nantwich Show, is famed for its dairy farming and cheshire cheese, but Shropshire can also be proud of its own cheese businesses; such as Belton Cheese near Whitchurch and Moyden’s at Wistanswick. If cheese interests you, even only mildly, enhance your pleasure by occasionally trying something different and perhaps discover regional, Midlands cheeses.

Maybe even consider visiting the Nantwich International Cheese show next year. Cheese is truly a fascinating and historical subject, and one to which we will return from time to time.

‘DEADEN THE SHEER MISERY OF LIFE!’

I

HAVE recently been reading some enjoyable historical novels by Antonia Hodgson (not my usual reading fare to be honest). Set in 1720’s London I was reminded of alcohol’s part in society.

Long before the NHS told us what we shouldn’t or couldn’t do, alcohol was protecting the public’s health. Water and milk had to be boiled before drinking and all food was best to be eaten well cooked.

Alcohol, usually beer, gin, wine and brandy was used to deaden the sheer misery of life; to quieten babies teething; to stop wounds festering and in crude dentistry and surgery. In short it was a lifesaver.

A modern study of family events such as weddings checking the various outcomes on the guests, of large scale food poisoning. Those guests who had visited the bar several times before the food was served often suffered no ill effects from the contaminated food, the alcohol in the stomach killing the bacteria immeadiately. The elderly and the young were more likely to have succummed to the poisoning having stuck to tea, coffee and soft drinks.

I have been lucky to visit some hospices and retirement homes where a ‘Happy Hour’ is the norm. To see folk not long for this world giggling over a glass of sherry or beer is delightful. When surrounded by nurses and drips and pills, having a glass of good cheer lifts all moods.

When friends and family start getting a little self-important its worth remembering that our forbears were the ones face down in the mud (and worse) after a long evening in the pub.

The headache the following day may have been horrendous, but it was proof of life. A puritanical life may often have been shorter. Try not to end up in the gutter after a few drinks, you’ll only get a lecture from your doctor!

Historical Wellington DVD available soon Historical Wellington DVD by Les Edwards of LEVS Video Productions, tells the story of the market Town of Wellington from its humble beginnings to present day.

Included are some of its industries, business, and famous sons and daughters, the reenactment of the charter of 1244 by Jon King, with interviews by local people on the history of Wellingtons postal history, fire brigade, Sunneycroft, Samuel Corbett and sons and Bill Perry

The DVD also has an interview with George Evans (aka Mr Wellington) on his life and times in the the town.

Written and produced by local videography Les Edwards the DVD was eighteen months in the making and the story is told and narrated by David Evans. The running time is one hundred and four minutes approx, and the DVD will be on sale at WH Smiths (Post Office) in Market Street from 1 November priced at £12.99.

They include local scenes of Ironbridge and the Wrekin. Mr Clark, an ex-lorry driver from Tottenham is pictured handing over the paintings to Bradley McDonald, a senior volunteer at the Wellington shop in New Street.

BUCKS STALL IN FRONT OF GOAL

FTER a reasonable opening to the season AFC Telford United found themselves mid-table. They appeared defensively solid but lacking a cutting edge up front. The lack of goals was a concern and the main issue-facing boss Rob Smith. Could his side find the goals needed to move up the table? The importance of finding a way to goal was paramount as maintaining the hitherto impressive defensive record would be challenging.

by Lez Dean A gritty home victory over Kidderminster Harriers was to prove a high point as once again the defence battled manfully, securing a 1-0 win.

A Micah Evans goal ultimately proving enough to bag the points. But this victory was knife-edge stuff and would be difficult to replicate on a regular basis.

This proved to be the case with the defensive side of the Bucks game crumbling as Smith took his side to Gainsborough. The visit to Lincolnshire was to prove an eye opener as Telford crashed to a sobering 3-1 defeat. Defeat three days later at Gloucester and the concession of a further three goals led to stinging criticism of his side by Smith.

With finances tight, an FA cup run could have made such a difference to prospects going forward. Perhaps, with that in mind the Bucks bolstered their attacking options with the signing of the returning Connor McCarthy From Southport just in time for the qualifier at Worcester City. This was a tricky looking tie but Telford produced a gritty display to dig out a draw despite a string of chances for the home side. So it was back to the Bucks Head for the replay. All seemed to be going well until the 55th minute. At that point Telford led courtesy of a fine Dave Hibbert strike. But all the good work was undone as loanee Jonathan Royle was sent off. From that point there was to be only one winner as Worcester piled forward with Cieron Keane, Chekaine Steele and Lee Hughes sealing

City’s passage into the next round.

The Bucks returned to league action at home to Chorley. Here the roles were reversed with the Lancashire club having a man sent off immediately after the break with the game scoreless. Unlike Worcester however, Telford were unable to dominate depleted opposition and find a breakthrough. Plenty of endeavor but little quality was on show as the Bucks Head side had to settle for a disappointing point.

Tigers start well Telford Tigers are second in the English Premier League, following a run of five wins out of six in the first month of the new campaign, writes James Shaw.

The only blemish on that record is a 2-1 loss to Swindon Wildcats after penalties, although they still pick up a point from that game.

They ended that sequence of six games with a thrilling 4-2 success over reigning league champions Basingstoke Bison, in front of almost 1,000 fans at Telford Ice Rink.

And coach Tom Watkins was delighted after watching his side come from behind twice against Basingstoke.

He said: “It was a great game to watch and our energy levels were very good tonight. We

talked about using our forecheck to create offense and we did that.

“We turned over a lot of pucks and to be fair, I thought the game should have been out of sight earlier than it was. But all credit to Basingstoke and their goaltending made it hard for us to get pucks through.

“Our energy and commitment in the early part of every period was certainly the difference tonight. All four of our goals came in the last two minutes of each period.”

NEXT UP: The Tigers return to action against Manchester Phoenix at Telford Ice Rink on October 1st (6pm) before a trip to face Peterborough Phantoms the next day.

Wellington secure Division One status

ELLINGTON ensured Division One survival.

With the seasons number one priority achieved, First team Coach, Ross Edwards said, ‘We completed what we set out to do. First and foremost we needed to maintain Division One status and the team has done that.

We had scares, we knew we would, but the team stepped up and put in a number of big performances.

Highlight of season has to be when we took 85 points from five games when we were up against it. Earlier in the season we felt we were in good positions only for the rain to deny us points but we battled back. The team came together and that was the most pleasing thing for me.’

Pivotal to the teams performance’s this year has been Captain Wendell Wagner. He has led by example, being the leading wicket taker and scoring important runs. Edwards continued, ‘Wendell has been magnificent this

by Fraser Watson season. He has bowled fast, run in hard when we needed him too and scored crucial runs, he’s been superb.’

With the clubs future secured, Wellington’s last home game was against Moseley. On a ‘sporting wicket’ Wellington ground out a competitive 191, thanks mainly to Joe Clarke (54). Moseley were never really in it.

Anthony O’Connor and Adam Byram, both making their final first team appearance at Orleton Park, applied the pressure and Moseley were bowled out for 122. It was a fitting end for both bowlers, who picked up three wickets each, as Wellington ran out comfortable winners.

Ross Edwards summarised the season, ‘We finished in the same place as last year but the feeling is we have played better cricket and are in better shape, so we are happy with how the season went. We will sit down in a few weeks and plan for 2017.’
