Gratitude is a favorite theme of mine during the holidays. Last year tested us, like everyone else, in ways we could not have imagined. Despite the challenges, there was much to be grateful for by the time the holiday season began.

This year, as I think about gratitude, it bubbles up for me in quite an unexpected way. As the country began to reopen – full of the promises of freedom and connection – so did a new trend in hospitality. For those of us in the business, our grapevines were full of the news of it, and now the national media is as well. Instead of a joyful reawakening full of gratitude, hospitality businesses are experiencing something surprising: poor guest behavior. From the airlines to hotels to mom and pop restaurants, there are reports of impatience, belligerence and even the occasional tantrum.

One recent story headline read: “Note to Customers: ‘Be Kind or Leave’.”

The inspiration for the story was a note on the front door of a restaurant posted by its owner. I think you’ve probably read your fair share of these stories by now, too.

Another article recently caught my attention. It was about finding awe in daily life. According to a professor at UC Berkeley interviewed for the article, Awe is the Wow! emotion, “research shows that awe experiences decrease stress and anxiety while increasing positive emotions and overall satisfaction in life. They can also help our relationships, making us feel more compassionate and less greedy, more supported by and more likely to help others.” The professor goes on to point out that while most of us associate awe with something rare and beautiful, people can trigger awe as well, which is evidently called “interpersonal awe.”

Pondering this was a WOW moment for me. First, I became even more grateful than ever for all of you who are reading this letter. Not only are you the people who make the choice to visit the wineries, join us on Zoom and purchase our wines: YOU ARE KIND. YOU are our source of AWE. You exemplify the words that so many in the hospitality world are craving this year: Patient, Flexible, Understanding, Appreciative, Gracious and Generous. This is incredibly humbling. Just...Wow.

For you and for so many other people, including my family, friends and colleagues here at PlumpJack, CADE, Odette and 13th Vineyard, I am feeling the deepest of gratitude this year. Thank you for always taking the high road in our presence, for bringing AWE into our lives, and for your enduring kindness and support.

The 2019 PlumpJack Chardonnay is simply one of our best yet. The nose opens with stone fruit and mango, which gives way to lemon and lime zest with green

pear. Then come floral notes of orange blossom and

honeysuckle. Under all of this, there is a warm, sweet

baking spice to bring even more intrigue. The texture

is reminiscent of a creamy custard with a lively acidity and freshness that is balanced by a structured, almost grapefruit pithy, bite on the lengthy finish.

Our 2018 Syrah was grown in the cooler Carneros

region of the Napa Valley. This cooler climate lends this wine its defining characteristics. The nose is

packed with spices and white pepper, plum, blackberry, blueberry, and red cherry, and underneath, there is a

suggestion of grilled meats. The flavors on the pallet are plum, berries, spices, and peppercorn with blueberries and cocoa lingering on the finish.

The palate is full and rounded with firm tannin and a beautiful acid providing the backbone and length.

Our Merlot vineyard is in the Oak Knoll region of

the Napa Valley, and is nestled up to the Mayacamas Mountain Range on the west side of the valley.

The mild climate and alluvial soils in this region lend this wine great balance and structure. The mild

temperatures allow these grapes to develop bright

aromatics and flavors, along with a beautiful natural acidity and elegance. The alluvial soils bring darker fruits to the nose and palate, and give this wine its structure and concentration.

Inspired by the natural abundance of Napa Valley, FARM's elevated menu is based on locally sourced produce, including ingredients from the restaurant’s own 1,300 square foot organic raised-bed gardens.

After cooking at home so much during the pandemic, it's been a real joy to return to some of our favorite restaurants and share a delicious meal with friends.

Aesthetically, FARM is a stylish and modern take on the Napa farmhouse, offering a casually luxurious indoor and outdoor setting highlighted by a cathedral ceiling, natural lighting and a living room-style al fresco pavilion with cozy firepits.

Tell us why you love to dine at FARM. Aaron: Of course the food is fantastic. But what I love most about FARM is the ambiance. The property is beautiful and the restaurant is elegant while keeping a comfortable, approachable vibe. While I enjoy dining in the restaurant, I especially like to lounge in the outdoor Pavilion with views of the grounds and a bocce court nearby. It’s relaxed and unpretentious.

What is your favorite dish at FARM and which of your wines would you pair it with?

Aaron: If I’m dining in the restaurant, I might share the Gem Salad and Glazed Pork Belly to start and then move on to the Akaushi New York Steak paired with our PlumpJack Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. When in the Pavilion, I’ll have the Burger with our Cab. If you could eat one dish from this restaurant for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Aaron: The burger in the Pavilion

What did you miss most about dining out during lockdown?

Aaron: I have a standing date night with my wife. We go out to some of our favorite spots in Napa and enjoy time together without our kids. It’s a nice break and a great opportunity to appreciate what started this journey. We didn’t get to do this enough during the lockdowns. Also, it’s nice when someone else cooks and cleans for you.

Do you choose an entrée based on the wine you're drinking, or choose a wine based on the entrée you order?

Aaron: Generally I'll chose a wine based on what I’m ordering.

Today you're drinking the 2018 PlumpJack Merlot – what dish do you recommend pairing with it?

Aaron: Truthfully, this wine seems to go with just about anything. Most recently, I had this with an incredible pork schnitzel at Avow in Napa. Seriously. Pork schnitzel. It was beautiful!

What's the best thing you've ever eaten, ever?

Aaron: The best dish I’ve ever eaten?? There have been so many great dishes. But for me, food and wine is more than just the food and wine. It’s about the whole experience. One memory that always makes me feel good is lunch at Chez Hortense in the Arcachon Bay near Bordeaux. I had lunch with some of the members of my PlumpJack family hosted by the Cathiards (owners of Chateau Smith Haut Lafite). We had beautiful and simply prepared fish freshly caught from the bay paired with the Smith Haut Lafite blanc and some duck-fat fries. The setting, food, wine, and many laughs with great company made for a perfect and unforgettable moment.

Final question: your response to whether you prefer dining out for lunch or dinner (see above) has us wanting more details. Tell us more about your love of breakfast.

Aaron: Choosing between dining out for breakfast or dinner is tough. I definitely dine out to dinner more often. But I do love to visit the Boon Fly Café in the morning for their Eggs Benedict or Corned Beef Hash. The donuts are delicious, too.

The rarity of going out to breakfast makes it pretty special.

Mustards Grill

After 30 years of feeding Napa Valley and its visitors, Mustards Grill is still the hub of the food and wine community where winemakers lunch with truckers and chefs come to dine on their night off.

Danielle, tell us why you choose to dine at Mustard’s Grill?

Danielle: Mustard’s is one of the iconic restaurants in Napa Valley. It first opened over 30 years ago. It has, and will always be, one of my favorite restaurants. The food is amazing. The menu doesn’t change much because Cindy Pawlcyn has literally mastered every plate on the menu. It has something for every palate from seafood tostadas to Mongolian Pork Chops.

What did you miss most about dining out during lockdown?

Danielle: Everything! My husband is an amazing cook but sometimes you just get stuck in a rut with the same meal every week. So I really missed the creativity and variation you get with dining out. I also missed exploring new wines on the wine list. And to be perfectly honest I missed splurging on dessert.

I can’t say no to anything with chocolate!

What’s your favorite dish & which of your wines (on the list) does it pair best with?

Danielle: I have been dining at Mustards for about 20 years! I always order the same thing. I rarely deviate from my favorite menu item. The grilled Ahi sandwich with onion rings. They took it off the menu during the pandemic last year so I had to explore the menu a bit. You can’t go wrong with the adult grilled cheese.

But I am so glad the Ahi sandwich is back on the menu! It pairs beautifully with the CADE Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc.

Do you tend to pick your entree based on the wine you’re drinking, or pick your wine based on the entrée you order?

Danielle: It is kind of a rare occurrence that I pick a wine based on my entrée. I tend to pick the wine I want to drink and the entrée that I want to eat. I am a professional wine taster after all. I just want to enjoy good food and good wine. They don’t always need to be paired perfectly with one another. If we are eating multiple courses then I might spend more time matching the wine to the food.

Today we’re drinking CADE Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain. What dishes are you ordering with it?

Danielle: Just about everything! It goes great with something as simple as a burger and fries. But I also enjoy it with more substantial fish like Swordfish or Halibut. It has enough density and weight to it that it can stand up to more flavorful dishes.

I think the wine goes well with savory dishes as well.

Tell us about the best thing you’ve ever eaten in your entire life.

Danielle: Truffle Gnudi from Bouchon. Hands down the most decadent, mind blowing, amazingly good dish. The first time I had it I had to stop myself and just take a moment to savor it. I wanted to remember every bite it was so good. It's only on the menu once a year, when black truffles are in season.

The combination of pillowy soft ricotta, salty parmesan cheese, and Perigord black truffles, which are earthy and floral at the same time, all I can say is yum.

During quarantine, were you more likely to cook at home or order take out?

Danielle: We cooked a lot at home, but we made sure to support some of our favorite Napa restaurants that were offering take out.
