Letter from the Editor Good day to you and welcome to The Plumber’s Faucet. If you have read The Plumber’s Faucet in the past you might be surprised at what you find in these few pages. If this is your first time with the Faucet, you will most definitely be surprised. This year we will be putting on our cover-alls, donning our hard hats, and marching further into the realm of legitimate journalism than we ever have before.

In the past this paper has gotten itself into a whole host of problems due to the content of these pages. We recognized that we are doing a disservice to engineers if we are nothing but a loud brutish paper, which, as one contributor has mentioned, “throws its shit around just for the sake of seeing which of it sticks.” Engineers are more than this, and we need to prove to ourselves that we are more than “a faculty whose focus is on traditionally male traits like aggression and strength.” We are not a bunch of misogynistic assholes. We are intellectuals and we have our own perspective and opinions that need to be heard. I want this paper to be the forum in which issues that are important to undergraduates are discussed, critically examined, and refuted.

Though some of our content has become more serious, the spirit of the paper hasn’t changed. We are not afraid to speak our minds and don’t care if we happen to offend someone in the process. We still publish anything we think is worth reading including joke articles and cartoons and we are not above including the occasional poop joke — so long as it’s a good one.

As this is a paper based on opinions, there is a good chance you will be put off by or disagree with something you read here. We hope that when this happens you will respect us for having the balls to say something controversial and call us out on the inaccuracies in our reasoning.

There are many stereotypes about engineers on campus, both positive and negative. Whatever these stereotypes may be, they show that we are in some sense defined by others by our major, or at least the perception of our major. It is important to challenge these assumptions, to stand up and speak our minds, to show everybody that we are more than a bunch of rowdy kids singing songs about midwestern metropolises. And this is why The Plumber’s Faucet is in your hands today. We will be here to make sure that we, as engineers, always have a forum for expression.

Who The Hell Do We Think We Are?

With the recent posting of Sarah Mortimer’s Hyde Park article “Engineering Frosh is Sexist” in The McGill Daily, engineering has been asked a very pointed question: “Are we sexist?”

While some might try to argue that men and women view the world differently or have different capacities, that argument has little to no bearing on how we should treat people in engineering. Each engineering student should be evaluated objectively irrelevant of background, sex or any other attribute. The only thing that matters is your ability to complete the work required of an engineer as well as the quality of your work and the virtue of your character.

In my rather long tenure here at McGill University, there have been several times in which I can say that I have seen displays which may be considered sexist. We as engineers are a crude lot, many of us like to drink and sing. Any alcohol related event can attest to the fact that the loosening of inhibitions also results in

the retelling of crude jokes. We’ve all heard them: from “your mother” jokes (thankfully losing popularity), to dead baby jokes (gross but always a favorite to the eccentrics), to the unfortunate current trend of “that’s what she said” jokes (why won’t they all go away, they are not funny!).

Many of these jokes are sexual in nature and often involve women.

According to the traditional definitions of sexism these jokes can be seen as sexist. I feel that there is no malice behind any of the jokes told by engineers, while there is certainly a lack of good taste I don’t feel that engineering is attempting to force women into a negative gender role.

Quite the opposite of marginalizing women, many of our events have a good representation of female engineers, be this Blues Pub, O.A.P. or Frosh or any other engineering related event. We always have female students participating and often female students have a higher participation rate, this is especially true in student politics, the executive committee of

the EUS being the best example.

As for sexism in the classrooms I can say that I know professors who have treated female students in a more favorable light as well as in a less favorable light. Similarly, I have seen male students being treated poorly and being celebrated. I don’t believe that any of these instances equate to anything larger than the problem of favoritism (or scorn) of individual students, nor that I can conclude that the engineering faculty as a whole puts down women students or makes life harder for them. If anything I have seen that female students have a slightly easier time on campus. I say this because of all the great support available. Amongst this support is P.O.W.E. Promoting Opportunities for Women in Engineering whose primary goal is to “encourage the presence of women in engineering and to increase awareness about the amazing contributions that women have made to [the field of] engineering.” P.O.W.E. goes out of

Research? Ya, SURE. The Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering programme, or SURE, was created in 2008 as a supplement to the government’s NSERC – USRA, an award offered to McGill engineering undergraduate students for sixteen weeks of research work over the summer. By the numbers, SURE was a big success, as it greatly increased the number of undergraduate students in the faculty that were awarded research positions. But if the faculty is looking to use SURE as a means of promoting careers in research to its undergrads, it might want to look at quality, not quantity.

In speaking with SURE award recipients, it becomes clear that the nature of the work assigned varied greatly from joe jobs to hard core research. Granted, not every SURE recipient is expected to make fantastic new discoveries, but some students expressed the strong opinion that their work had no potential of yielding advances in its field. Part of the problem was lack of guidance and goals: said one recipient, “It was like trying to do research based on someone else’s incomplete thought.”

Another student, when asked whether his work qualified as research stated, “Not really. I didn’t really discover anything new, so I wouldn’t call it research. I wasn’t really trying to find anything new, either.”

It’s important to recognize the awkward balance SURE tries to achieve: to give undergraduate students a positive experience of research work which is, intrinsically, open-ended, in the period of just four months. On this point, a SURE recipient commented that, “The more freedom [undergraduates] are given in doing research, the harder it becomes to complete, as opposed to graduate

students who have more experience.”

Exemplifying this tricky equilibrium, the same student made the point that coming into work each day, faced with the same task, problems, and (lack of) results was demoralizing.

If there was one thing that dissatisfied SURE participants agreed on, it was that the pay was good, given that hours were flexible and the work was not strenuous. Also, aside from the lack of guidance about which a few complained, there was a consensus that oversight of the undergraduate researchers was sufficient. One undergrad, who was working more with his boss’s PhD research assistant than he was with his boss, pointed out that having someone who could commit some of their time each day to walking him through his research tasks made his SURE

experience much more enjoyable.

Similarly, though a significant number of participants felt their research work lacked innovation, most agreed that they learned something new as a result of their internship.

All in all, SURE is a good program and its organizers definitely deserve acclaim for their work. Keeping in mind that this was its first year, all its participants would undoubtedly agree that SURE was quite an achievement. On the other hand, its rapid expansion resulted in some students getting positions that are unsatisfactory because of their lack of scope or oversight. There is a lot of untapped potential among engineering undergraduate students, and this potential could be realised with only a few improvements to, shall we say, quality control in SURE.

Plumbers

by Edward Jerjian In the 60s, 70s and 80s, a satirical tabloid entitled The Plumber’s Pot was the staple of engineering pride and culture on campus. McGill Alumni from those decades will attest to the humor and farce that once embodied the outspoken “plumber.”

The proud designation of “plumber” was coined by engineering students in the early 1900s, continuing on for nearly a century before dissolving into obscurity.

In 1989, The Plumber’s Pot was officially banned by the Dean of Engineering due to the publication’s vulgar and seemingly chauvinistic style – which pissed off feminists and a new influx of international students on campus. Over the years, rogue plumbers would revive the Pot, even though Faculty bylaws were put in place to restrict on-campus use of “The Plumber’s Pot.” Today, the notion of a “plumber” is frequently misunderstood and forgotten among engineering students and campus alike.

To clarify, plumbers are not sexist drunken engineering students.

Old school plumbers may have come across as chauvinists, but today the Faculty of Engineering constitutes a fair number of women.

In 1985, a scandal broke out involving Melinda Wittstock (B.A. ’86), an award-winning broadcast and print journalist – who once worked for The McGill Daily. She claimed that engineering students intended on raping her in a cold, dark and icy alley in the McGill ghetto after she published her opinion in the Daily about “sexist poetry” of the Pot. It was a sign of the times.

or maintain a vulgar, WASP-like demeanor?

“There is a difference between being culturally aware and being politically correct. I think, at the time, Dean Belanger was correct to isolate [the Pot],” says Professor Frank Ferrie, Electrical & Computer Engineering — one of the few still in the Faculty who can comment on those times.

“At the same time, though, certain individuals put a lot of work into [the Pot]. It was well written, engaging, took a lot of craft and had tactful innuendo. I think today we are missing that very tradition [in the Faculty] — social commentary.”

Indeed, the old Pot exercised a sense of humour and poignant articulation. During a climate of social change, those daring opinions and perspectives were the reason for the Pot’s popularity across campus.

The PPO (Plumbers’ Philharmonic Orchestra) is a remnant of this voice. The PPO is a clique of male and female engineering students who proudly maintain the plumber identity on campus. The objective of the PPO is to raise money for charity, promote the spirit of the McGill Engineering, and improve life on campus.

On Friday evenings, you will see them running around the McGill ghetto, dressed in white lab coats and singing old engineering songs. Many of them hold positions within the Engineering Undergraduate Society and engage in social activities.

Then there’s all the other engineering students.

Social engagement has been steadly decreasing for the past couple of years. Engineers need to get their heads out of their textbooks more often and find out what engineering is really all about.

its way to help showcase engineering to young female prospective students.

The group is not gender exclusive and welcomes the help of anyone; I myself have assisted P.O.W.E. events. They show that women are just as capable as their male peers and that engineering is actually really cool.

The matter of how students in engineering view each other is another issue all together. I know there are a few students who feel that engineering is still a male dominated “boys-club” or at least that it should be. To this I have to say that there are always going to be assholes in this world, of both sexes, who will try to use

their gender as an excuse for their behavior. Luckily I have not seen a significant number of such assholes floating around in engineering. As for me personally I don’t look at male or female students as being better than the other. I do however look at certain individuals and their performance. We can all admit that we don’t want to work with certain people in our classes, not because of who they are in principle but who they are in person. We don’t want to work with let’s say John Kline the lazy slacker, not because he is a man but because he is lazy and doesn’t come to class.

Each year the enrollment numbers in engineering are getting

closer to parity and I have been told several times that chemical engineering has actually a higher number of female students.

An interesting question would be: What happens to P.O.W.E. when there is a majority of women in the engineering faculty? Should we create M.E.N. the Men in Engineering Network? Until then, P.O.W.E. and engineers of both sexes will all strive their hardest to graduate from a difficult degree which requires boys and girls to work together to reach our goals.

When we start solving those differential equations they sure as hell don’t care if they’re making men or women fail.

FACC 100 & FACC 400: The New Ethics

This year, the Faculty will dissolve MIME 221 – Engineering Professional Practice, into two separate courses – FACC 100 and FACC 400. All senior undergrads must take MIME 221 this Fall 2009, or Winter 2010.

The new 2009-10 curriculum requires engineering students to take FACC 100, bookended by FACC 400 at the end of their degree. The decision was made by Professor Jim Clark, Associate Dean of Academics, after 5-6 years of deliberation and will be pitched to the CEAB for the accreditation review two years from now.

“We were looking for a course [FACC 100] where professors from various disciplines could visit to discuss their fields and win the hearts of students,” says Prof. Clark. “In second year, they would get to focus on a respective discipline.”

“It is important to continue improving upon mechanisms that communicate student responsibilities, duties and rights in a formal setting,”

says Keane. She points out that guest lectures by professors from different fields will benefit students by giving them a solid understanding of how multi-faceted engineering is.

FACC 400, also one credit, will be offered in Winter 2011. As the complement to FACC 100, it will prepare students for the professional engineering exams and their responsibilities in industry. “[The Faculty] thought that Prof.

Hassani’s ethics lessons must be a constant reminder up until the time students graduate,” says Keane.

“This way, regulation, code of ethics, laws, and responsibilities will also be fresh in mind before industry.”

Though curriculum changes are slow, this new approach is definitely a step in the right direction. FACC 100 & FACC 400 will harness pride for the engineering discipline and hopefully foster a sense of community responsibility. If only were the primary purpose of every course ...

The Role of Internet in Election Campaigns

Drastic changes are occurring all around us that are transforming our lives and it seems that our legislation is not keeping up with the times. The role of the Internet, specifically social networking is a fairly recent phenomenon.

Facebook was founded on February 4th, 2004 a mere 5 years ago. MySpace, often seen as the first widespread networking site in the west, was only founded in 2003.

Social networking websites are a fairly recent invention, yet it is hard to remember what life was like before them for many university students.

Some of the biggest changes they have brought is the speed at which information concerning current events can be disseminated to a target crowd and the ease in which likeminded individuals can form groups around common interests.

In last year’s EUS elections there was a long and heated debate concerning the use of the Internet in election campaigns. The EUS has a series of bylaws which are in place to detail the procedure of all its actions.

A section of these bylaws concern the election process. The election bylaws are there for two reasons: to ensure a fair and proper election, and apparently also to prevent e-mail spam. The source of the debate which raged at the March 16th council of the EUS was concerning two specific articles of the election bylaws: 3.8 No candidate shall engage in any online campaigning, including but not limited to: personal websites and mass emails 3.8.1 Networking websites are excluded from this ban.

I quote from the official minutes of the council (which are posted publicly): “Suzy: Regardless of what the electoral results say, I think we should set the example by disqualifying them for not obeying the bylaws.”

It was at this point that I asked if the results could be made known as to prevent a lengthy debate which could ultimately just result in us disqualifying the defeated candidates.

“John Danby: In response to councillor Kline.

Regardless of whether or not they win or lose, if council wants to take a stance on following the bylaws, then they should not take a different [sic] stance based on the outcome of the election. If you break the rules [sic] and lose, it’s no different from breaking the rules [sic] and winning. Also, we don’t really

know what the results are, so council should be acting on principle, and not on other biases.”

Council then began the long and tedious debate as to whether or not we should disqualify candidates based on the e-mails that were sent out.

After a verbal testimony from the CRO stating the nature of the offences: “Courtney Lessard: Is there any more info as to the nature of the offences?”

“Suzy Su: an email sent out by facebook, but on the behalf of facebook, and to actual email accounts.”

“Sean Lawlor: So you said it was not them who did the mass emailing?”

“Suzy Su: It was on behalf of them. Had it been someone else saying “vote for this candidate” then it would be different.”

“Andrew Komar: was this email sent to people who joined groups voluntarily?”

“Suzy Su: I don’t know. [..]”

We start with our drunk celebrations Eng frosh and our own OAP. Class waits for the end of libations, But the first years still do not yet see.

Still tipsy, they soon find their first class Half-listening to Prof as she speaks “Only some of you will get a pass” While the rest shall be out in mere weeks”.

The students, not used to these hardships Are drowned with their assignments and tests.

By thanksgiving, the will to live slips But McGill drives right on with its quests.

Come December, they’re soundly defeated The library is their one home.

They wish only to not be mistreated By the test woman with her monotone.

At last they think that they’ve won it Christmas should settle the score.

Just to watch their GPA plummet Then return eight semesters encore.

Confessions of a Drunk

The following is a true story, the name of the participants has been changed except for that of the author. The Plumber’s Faucet does not endorse any of the actions presented in the article. It is not meant to degrade anyone in any manner.

It merely recounts the odd series of events which make up authors life. Please read at your own risk.

Chapter 4: Stream-Lining Alec was one of my roommates for the first two years I went to college until he graduated. We had many drunken escapades together, and in many ways he was my mentor and thought of me as his protégé. Alec and I were the two heavyweight drinkers of the house, we were usually the shit-disturbers around the place, but it was all good because everyone had a good time...everyone, that was, except for my girlfriend.

Alec had a game called deathcup, which is quite similar to the well known drinking game “Kings” except you drink a lot more. Essentially there is a deck of cards around a 24 pack of beer, and someone has to pick up a card. Depending on the value of the card, everyone has to do a particular drinking event. The game lasts until everyone is wasted. One night Alec told me he wanted to play deathcup in his room. My then girlfriend Steph was already on her way to see me, so I decided that I would play, and she could join in. It ended up being me, Alec, two other roommates and Steph playing this game. The game started uneventful, pounding away beers as normal, and spilling a little on my lap. It was a good time. Then we began to speed up the pace of the game, and I began to pound the beers faster and faster. We all began feeling the effects of alcohol. Steph, who was sitting next to me on the couch, tried

to cuddle with me, and I got pissed at her, so I pushed her off. I was no fan of romance especially during an intense manly competition such as death cup.

I finally pulled three consecutive “3” cards, and I had to pound three beers in a row. I thought everything was fine until all of a sudden I realized I drank the beer the wrong way. I felt “the bubble” (a huge pocket of air that forms in your stomach when you drink too fast and in the wrong way). I knew it wasn’t going to be good. I sat there for 2 minutes hoping my stomach would settle. Everyone looked at me.

“Morgan, it’s your turn to drink” “Yeah, just give me one se...”

Just then the bubble attacked.

I felt a rush of vomit surge up my esophagus and into my throat. I held my mouth shut, and tried to throw it back down. I held if off for a second, and then the second rush came. I forced every muscle in my mouth to hold it back, and barely succeeded.

Just then a third rush came.

I looked at everyone and said “Uh-oh.”

Everyone looked back at me knowing what was about to happen, frozen in the moment. “Uh-oh” Then all of a sudden my throat exploded. Chunks of food and beer spraying out of my mouth like a fire hose all over my lap and Steph’s. Steph shrieked, stood up, and ran out of the room. I kept throwing up for another thirty seconds, my insides burning in pain. I then looked up absolutely shocked at my three friends who stayed in the room. Their eyes were wide open and their mouths slightly ajar. The moment my eyes caught theirs they began to roll on the floor, laughing at me and my vomit soaked lap.

“Wow you idiot” Alec said “Why didn’t you run to the sink. Now you

puked on yourself and your girlfriend, and you’re not going to get laid because you’re a moron.”

My other two friends began laughing even harder. I sat there, silent, humiliated in my own filth. I finally stood up, careful as not to spill any puke onto the floor, walked into my room and took my pants off. I then put on a towel on and walked towards the shower. On the way I passed Steph who was ranting to one of my friends in distress. I snuck behind her, careful as to not draw her attention.

I then took a quick shower, snuck behind Steph again, and put some new clothes on. I then got Steph and told her to come to my room.

“Look Morgan, I don’t think we’re doing anything tonight. I have your throw up on my clothes. And I need to change, so I think I’m going home now. You can come if you want” “Listen I’m sorry I threw up on you. I’m drunk, and I don’t want to go anywhere. Just come in my room, you can clean your clothes tomorrow. You’re going to be naked tonight anyways, so you don’t need your clothes.”

She looked at me hesitantly, so I put my hand around her waist and began tugging at her. She then reluctantly followed me to my room.

I then got my rocks off and passed out. The next morning I slipped into Alec’s room. The same guys from the night before were there.

“Hey, it’s vomit boy. How was not getting laid last night?” They all began laughing.

“Actually...I did get laid last night.

Looks like none of you fuckers did.”

The expression on my three friends’ faces immediately went from humorous to absolute shock. The room went silent, and I left the room laughing.

Facebook scandal in EUS Elections

It is my understanding that article 3.8.1 clearly permits the use of networking websites such as the culprit in question. It turns out that the “e-mails” that were sent in fact originated from facebook. As anyone who uses facebook knows, the site will forward information that occurs on facebook to your personal e-mail account. This however is a feature which you may turn off. As such can candidates who use a permitted campaigning resource really be held accountable? The debate continued as to whether or not the candidates should be disqualified, in the end council made the right decision and decided to not disqualify the candidates based on the e-mails but concluded that the bylaws were ambiguous and could cause further problems.

All this drama was going on in one of the worst turn-outs for candidates in

years. Six of eight executive positions ran unopposed. For the position of VP Communications there were 3 candidates, two of which were accused of breaching the bylaws and were held on trial at council to see if they were disqualified. At a time in which we have low involvement in student politics what we don’t need is more drama to further undermine the system.

Our bylaws are in place to ensure a fair and equal election. They are also there to prevent intrusive campaigning techniques which could negatively impact our constituents, nobody wants press gangs or massive amounts of junk mail. I can understand why you wouldn’t let candidates run their own independent sites, for the same reason you limit the format and size (and color!?) of the campaign posters.

However why should social networking websites be excluded from the ban?

The candidates should have access

to no online resources which are not monitored or regulated. I feel that people should be allowed a website, one that is publicly listed and hosted by the EUS and each candidate should have one. What better way is there to post information about the candidates views than on this website? If people have questions let them post them and have the candidate reply. If there is an important issue that comes up they can address it on their election site.

Let us bring the election process into the 21st century. If the sites are standardized and hosted by the EUS, how can there be a claim that there is room for inequality. In this day and age we need to permit people to get the information out to the people who care. And if all the candidates views and positions are held in one central place it will only help legitimize our elections, more so than e-mail spam and the multitude of monochrome posters splattered over campus billboards.

Mech Madness Never Happend, We Swear

I'd like to share with anyone interested some things that definitely did not happen this past weekend.

Starting Friday night, after Mining Blues Pub, a coach bus full of rowdy engineers did not show up at Remington's in Cornwall, and did not partake in any further drinking. Soon after, the bus did not continue on to Kingston.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. in the morning on Saturday, in a showing of traditionally male traits like aggression and strength, nearly 60 engineers did not file out of their bus and into Kingston's 5-star resort hotel, the Rest Inn. Almost immediately, noise complaints never started rolling in. The engineers never even came close to having to pay fines for their noisiness.

Upon waking the next morning, not at all hung-over, the rowdy engineers were informed that their aggression and strength had been too much for not one, but two roomfuls of unsuspecting Kingstonese.

After enjoying the gourmet continental breakfast provided by the Rest Inn, the engineers never got on a motherfucking boat. During the boat ride all engineers remained fully dressed and proper at all times, refraining from all loud chanting and cheering. After the boat ride, the engineers learned two important lessons of the trip: first, corn grows tall, and second, wind turbines remove clothing.

Later that night, there was no pub crawl through “downtown” Kingston.

At this point one might say that “shit went down” but that one would be wrong, because Mech Madness never happened. Before continuing, strawberry rhubarb strawberry
