Twitter rebranding to and the rise of Meta's "threads"

PL PARCEL's TWEET !

Have you noticed that the app “X”, previously known as Twitter, is barely recognisable now? Well, this is due to the new and fresh look X has taken on after its purchase by Elon Musk. On October 28 2022, Musk formally acquired X, and has seen the company through its many big changes. In this article, we take a look at how he acquired X, the netizens' reaction to this and the rise of Meta Threads.

" How did Elon Musk acquire Twitter, and what happened after he did? "

Before Musk acquired Twitter, he had already stated much earlied that he wanted to own one of the world’s most popular platforms. Twitter was purchased at an estimated cost of US$ 44 billion and soon after, Musk fired its top executives and laid off half of the company’s staff, causing major backlash from the public. However, more shocking events were to follow in the tumultuous timeline of Musk’s journey as the owner of Twitter.

06

Losing the identity of the famous blue bird

For 17 years, Twitter users would see the app’s iconic blue bird logo whenever they logged on to the service. However, on Monday, July 24 2023, Elon Musk officially replaced the company's logo with the stylised white X on a black background. This transition is part of Musk's vision to transform the platform into a kind of "everything app" of unlimited interactivity for ideas, goods, services and activities. However, while Twitter may have a different look now, he assured users that most of its original features have been retained, and that they could still enjoy the interface that they had grown accustomed to.

Netizens reactions

The new logo has garnered mixed reactions from users, many of whom feel that the change was unnecessary. The rebranding of Twitter to X has also sparked a large debate, some supported the change, though most were against it. Some netizens even go so far as to claim that the logo feels "sinister". There have also been hundreds of memes circulating the internet clearly showing what some netizens thought of the rebranding, though most of these memes had a negative opinion on the rebranding. One of Twitter's ex-employees, Esther Crawford, who had gone viral for sharing a picture of herself sleeping on the floor of the Twitter office, has said that Elon Musk is destroying the platform by rebranding it to X.

The rise of THREADS The rise of THREADS

PL Parcel !!

Threads was launched, on 5 July 2023, by Meta, Facebook's parent company. It has had a great start since, with 70 million users on 7 July, just 2 days after its launch, a success that surprised Mark Zuckerburg himself.

07

The app is essentially Meta’s version of X and functions as a textbased Instagram, repetitive to X. However, some of the key differences between Threads and X is that Threads does not have a direct message function and that users are not able to edit a post once it is published. Some features of Threads include allowing posts of up to 500 characters long and having new followers needing to be approved via request.

Further controversy

There have been mixed reactions to this new platform, with some netizens calling it “X’s copycat”. Tech Journalist Ryan Broderick gives his take, saying, “I think any attempt at replacing Twitter is silly” Some users are also unhappy that there is no option to delete your Threads account without deleting your Instagram account as well. However, there have been some positive responses to the app. Given the current state of X – with many netizens being unhappy with Elon Musk’s new ideas and behaviour – some netizens have called Threads a “miracle”. This has garnered a humourous response from Zuckerburg, with him tweeting his version of the familiar spiderman meme, that references X and Threads, his first tweet for the first time in 11 years Over on Threads, Zuckerberg gave his input, saying he thinks “there should be a public conversations app with 1 billion plus people on it,” adding that X “hasn’t nailed” its opportunity to do so. “Hopefully we will,” he concluded.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a seemingly innocent change has resulted in massive debate, with some for the change, and some against it. Will it be the downfall of X, or will it be the rise of something greater?

The reason for Threads’ overnight success is not only due to X’s downward trajectory, but because the platform is also linked to Instagram, so Threads' users could simply link their account to their Instagram, making it extremely convenient.

Teachers' Day Preparations in PL!

What is Teachers' day?

Teachers' Day - a yearly event that both teachers and students look forward to. From the many gifts students give to show appreciation to their teachers to the hustle and bustle of the school gearing up for the event, much thought goes into this occasion every year . Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of this yearly event? Well, let's take a deeper dive into the prep work students do to make the event a successful and joyous one here at PL.

Gift giving by Class Monitors

First off, students put in a tremendous amount of effort into planning the fun activities on Teachers' Day. The Prefectorial Board and Monitor Council work together to plan the Teachers' Day celebrations from July onwards. Each year, Monitors, as well as the members of the Monitor Council, are in charge of a special segment leading up to Teachers' Day celebrations. That is, the handmade gifts prepared by their classes that teachers receive each year. The heartwarming gift is one of the highlights of the celebration. A role that is mostly hidden from the public eye is the backend work that is done to ensure everything runs smoothly. Monitor Council members have the challenging job of distributing materials to each class all while ensuring that teachers remain unaware of these activities. Another important job is coming up with a different yet creative gift idea each year. These acts of hard work and dedication should not be taken for granted.

09

Teachers' Day Concert

One of the events that everyone looks forward to is the iconic Teachers' Day Concert, where many exciting events take place. From the performances by the various performing arts CCAs to the presentation of the Teachers' Day awards, it is something that evokes joy and ignites the school spirit with PL-lites cheering for their Teachers. Let's take a deeper look into the efforts of students who worked hard over the past few months to put together the best Teachers' Day concert possible. Firstly, the performing arts CCA studentsModern Dance, Handbells Ensemble, and Harp Ensemble have worked tirelessly to prepare for this special occasion. Their hard work started as early as May, beginning with the selection of pieces and choreography. Following that would be the countless hours needed to learn, perfect, and memorise their parts. "It was tiring but my peers encouraged me throughout the CCA sessions," said Kanishka Vijayakumar, one of the performers for Modern Dance. We also must not forget the students from MIT who play critical parts to manage the technical aspects, such as controlling the PowerPoint presentation slides, distributing microphones to the emcees and even management of the stage curtains. Without these groups of hardworking and dedicated students, the concert would not be a success.

We must also not forget to recognise the Teachers' Day emcees from the Monitors Council and English Drama. Apart from spending hours discussing and crafting an emcee script, they also have to practise and rehearse their lines, overcome stage fright and build their confidence to emcee at such an important event. Their dedication towards Teachers' Day is indeed something that we must appreciate and not take for granted. Members of the Monitor Council also helped to decorate the school with balloons and streamers to create a vibrant and happy atmosphere for Teachers' Day.

10

Student Reflections

Elizabeth Ban, the Chairperson of the 2023 Monitor Council commented, "We were essentially running the show- aside from the Prefects handling the Teachers' Day awards, we had to plan and think of every detail of the event from scratch. In the process of preparing for the event, all of us would be constantly going around the school to meet up with the other Class Monitors, finding student volunteers to help us and go to the General Office for information about classes and the teachers. It was difficult at first to get used to committing so much of our time to this, but as we went along we learned and cooperated with one another more and more effectively. I think this experience really revealed that so much work goes into these events behind the scenes, it takes a lot of creativity, dedication and teamwork to produce the amazing results that you eventually see."

Conclusion

In a nutshell, the annual Teachers' Day Celebration is a reflection of the amount of hard work that the different groups of PL-lites put in to ensure that an event runs smoothly. Thus, let's all take a moment to affirm and thank them for their efforts while wishing all teachers a Happy Teachers' Day!

The comparison of two hit movies released on the same day

Barbie VS Oppenheimer

The long-awaited Barbie movie, released on July 20th, has undoubtedly captured the excitement of many. The trailers, online advertisements, and posters have prompted some of us to rush for tickets the moment they were available. From the cast to the soundtrack, fans of this iconic toy have been eagerly counting down to the movie’s premiere. However, a surprising rival emerged on the very same day- Oppenheimer, a film set during World War II. This unexpected clash of releases has led to a playful term coined to represent the rivalry, “Barbenheimer” , as these two vastly different movies generated considerable anticipation and ticket sales. The intriguing aspect lies in the stark contrast between the two films, a contrast that has spurred much discussion and light-hearted comparisons. Without further ado, let’s delve into the article as we explore these two movies.

Barbie Soundtrack

Besides the movie, the Barbie soundtrack has also been highly anticipatedand not without reason. Produced by Mark Ronson and featuring famous singers from all over the world, the soundtrack is full of hits and songs you can belt your heart out to. It kicks off with a loud, cheerful song titled "Pink" by Lizzo that transports the listener right into Barbieland, dancing along with Barbie herself in her hot pink sports car, and takes you on an emotional rollercoaster as you go through the ups and the downs of the movie ‘What Was I Made For?’ by Billie Eilish also contributes an appropriate amount of emotional depth, even evoking tears from some people Of course, there is no forgetting ‘I’ m Just Ken’ , sung by Ryan Gosling, who played Ken on screen It has an 80s-style power, threatening to steal the spotlight with its simple yet powerful lyrics Overall, the Barbie soundtrack is filled with fresh new songs sung by popular singers and groups all around the world, and may even contain some of your favourite new songs!

Barbie Meaning and Message (SPOILER ALERT!!)

While many of us expected Barbie to be a light-hearted, carefree movie, there was a deeper, more significant meaning behind the hotpink coloured movie we all know. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie talks about the theme of forging one ’s own identity. In Barbieland, Barbie feels safe as everything there is perfect and predictable, and all the Barbies are friends. However, the real world is scary and unpredictable, where anything might happen. Still, Barbie chose to go into the real world as Barbara, where she learnt to take charge of her own body. This mirrors the transition to womanhood, where the sheltered sanctuary of youth fades to reveal the complexity of life – pain, societal expectations, and the clear realities that shape one ’s path.

Barbie’s departure to the real world signifies the distressing step one takes into maturity, a symbolic exploration of the challenges and choices that define the journey from the simplicity of girlhood into the complexities of becoming a woman. Barbie movies also portray positive values, such as kindness, empathy, honesty and perseverance. The different characters hence make choices that reflect these values, as the movie aims to teach young audiences important life lessons.

13
A movie scene of Barbie in her bright pink car!

Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer, Barbie’s movie rival, is set in World War II, where a physicist, Oppenheimer, is tasked to develop and design an atomic bomb. On 16 July 1945, his work bore fruit and the world witnessed its first nuclear explosion, which altered the course of history. This movie also shines a light on the controversial debate – who is to blame for the devastation caused by the bomb, the creator or the ones who used the bomb? Oppenheimer and Barbie, although released on the same date, do bring many different ideas across Oppenheimer is based on how J . Robert Oppenheimer created the first atomic bomb, which drastically affected the world since. Barbie, on the other hand, is full of life and colour, and just like in Barbieland, where everything is predictable and nothing will go wrong.

Conclusion

In the world of movies, the release of Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day has sparked much discussion. Comparing the bright pink feel of the Barbie movie to the dark and edgy vibe of Oppenheimer, many netizens have felt the large differences between the two were extremely humorous. However, the same contrast between the vibrant world of Barbie and the historical gravity of Oppenheimer reflects the diverse spectrum that cinema encompasses. This reminds us that movies can tell all sorts of stories, showing how the cinema gives us a range of emotions and stories to enjoy.

The TikTok-ification of music

“Super shy” by NewJeans, “Cupid” by FiftyFifty - these are songs that plenty of us are familiar with thanks to its popularity on social media platforms In recent years, the phenomenon known as the "TikTokification" of music has emerged, propelling songs from obscurity to global prominence in mere moments. Fueled by short-form videos, viral challenges, and user-generated content, this trend has changed how we interact with music However, despite this immediate popularity, plenty of music artists have come to despise the “TikTokification” of music.

Instant Fame fame fame fame

TikTok has changed the music industry for the better in multiple ways Firstly, since it is an app that reaches many across the globe, it became the start of many musicians' careers. This includes artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X and Dove Cameron All of whom first gained popularity through videos on TikTok and then became professional musicians. Secondly, TikTok helps many musicians create opportunities for publicity. They promote their songs on TikTok before releasing it, so as to publicise their songs to a larger audience first By doing this, artists launch their songs to TikTok's large following and generate interest in it. Thirdly, TikTok can aid in creating trends for new songs. This can be done through using specific hashtags and creating challenges and contests for netizens to participate in. As more and more participate in feats like this, the butterfly effect occurs, gaining traction for the song Fourth, the use of TikTok tools to create duets and the ability to link to other music platforms encourage the audience to engage in music in different ways Now, not only can the audience listen to and enjoy a song like in the past, they can lip sync, make up a dance to it or try to sing it themselves. Doesn't the TikTokification of music make it much more interesting? Lastly, it is proved that TikTok users are more prone to spend money on music, namely, a monthly subscription or on artists' merchandise. This ensures that more artists are paid for the effort that they put into creating a song.

Lack Of Freedom T I K T O K M U S I

Despite the many benefits, the way music becomes popular on TikTok has some downsides. Firstly, when songs are made shorter to fit TikTok's short videos, it decreases the artist's freedom to express themselves fully, and their messages might be lost. Secondly, because TikTok has its own trends, artists might feel like they have to copy those trends to be noticed by their TikTok audience, which can make all music on the platform sound similar and less unique. Thirdly, TikTok focuses on videos, which can make people care more about how a video looks than how the music sounds. This causes musicians to think that good visuals are more important than good music. Fourth, TikTok's fast-paced nature can make artists feel like they always need to make new video content to stay popular, which can be tiring and hinder their creativity Lastly, while TikTok is useful for making catchy songs famous, it may not necessarily make people feel strong emotions like other music can This can make the connection people feel with the music weaker with music produced for TikTok

In conclusion, the "TikTokification" of music provides both benefits and drawbacks for the music industry and its listeners. On one hand, it can catapult many underground singers' careers On the other hand, singers utilising this phenomenon might be unable to fully spread their message to their audience and possibly create superficial music with a lack of self-expression The outcome of this phenomenon would depend on how artists and the industry strike a balance between harnessing its benefits and preserving the uniqueness of music for creative expression.

sources and effects of academic pressure

sources and effects of academic pressure

INTRODUCTION PEER PRESSURE

Academic stress and pressure are a familiar par lives for many of us students. Whether it's th exam periods or the routine of a regular schoo we ' ve all experienced varying degrees of acade pressure. This stress can serve as a motivation urging us to complete assignments on time and for tests, yet it can also become overwhelmin excessive. In this article, we will explore what causes this academic pressure.

One of the causes of academic pressure is peer pressure. What is peer pressure? It is being influenced by our friends to do things or act a certain way in order to fit in with them. Peer pressure can be beneficial but it can also be harmful at times. For example, it can be helpful when it leads to us becoming more confident and willing to try out new things that our friends like. This can allow us to discover more about ourselves and take up new hobbies and interests. However, peer pressure can be detrimental. When our friends' opinions or perceptions on our academics turn into unwanted expectations, it serves as a driving force for academic pressure in us. It can also lead to a shift in behaviour, causing us to become more negative, depressed, aggressive or even make us afraid of the school environment for fear of such pressure.

17

AL PRESSURE

Besides peer pressure, academic pressure can also be caused by parental pressure. Parental pressure happens when parents or family members inflict emotional pressure on their children in order for them to succeed in their academic studies. For example, some parents overly reprimand their children for not doing well in an exam, force their children to study every day or even compare them to other children. Even though parents have good intentions for their children, going too far can potentially harm their children as it can lead to effects such as low self-esteem, sleep-deprivation, and an unwillingness to go to school.

EFFECTS OF ACADEMIC PRESSURE

Academic pressure can lead to negative peer comparison. When we compare ourselves to our peers with higher grades than us, we may feel that we are less adequate and capable. This can result in feelings of competition and jealousy, which would then cause a toxic academic environment. Moreover, academic pressure can lead to unrealistic expectations. The pressure to excel in everything we do can lead to setting unachievable goals or standards for ourselves. When we fail to achieve these expectations, we will feel like we are not good enough academically and lose motivation. Therefore, academic pressure may lead to unrealistic expectations of ourselves, which will cause feelings of inadequacy and a distorted sense of self-worth.

18

Through this article, we hope you gain a better understanding of what academic pressure is and what causes it. As we navigate our way through secondary school, it is important to recognise that while academic pressure is part and parcel of learning, finding a healthy balance is essential. By understanding the causes of this pressure, we are able to manage it more effectively. Ultimately, finding a healthy amount of academic pressure is an important factor in our schooling years.

Managing Exam Stress

When you ask any student their main reason for stress, more often than not, you will be met with one common answer – exams. With the upcoming examinations, many PL-lites may be going through this ever familiar feeling. It’s normal to feel this way, but how can we overcome it? We aim to share more about test anxiety, and tips to manage it!

WhatisTest Anxiety?

Introduction
20

StudyinginAdvance

So, how do we prevent future test anxiety? Firstly, planning forward and studying ahead of your exams is the key to reducing exam stress. Studying weeks in advance of your exams gives you more time to clarify information and problems with your teachers, more time to revise topics you are weak or struggling in, and most importantly– more time to review and if necessary, memorise information. To add on, those who only prepare for exams too late are more likely to feel anxious with so much important information to cram in their heads and so many questions to clarify! Thus, one of the best ways to avoid exam stress is to prepare for your exams in advance.

HavingHealthyRoutines

Secondly, remembering to eat, sleep and exercise regularly is another important point. Having a poor diet, barely moving or exercising, and staying up late or pulling all-nighters can increase your stress levels. Just because your exams are coming up does not mean you should neglect your health Instead, you should continue to sleep at least 8-10 hours, eat 3 meals, and exercise at least 30 minutes a day, all of which reduces your stress levels in the process. Last but not least, having faith in yourself can decrease your exam stress. Believe it or not, always stressing over how well you perform does no one any good. Having confidence in yourself is a very important trick to reducing stress. Replacing your negative thoughts with positive ones works the same way!

21
