Introduction As students, education forms a big part of our lives.

Singapore’s education system is made to encourage students to develop skills like resilience, patience and diligence while learning. Over the years, the education system has been adjusted to fit the needs of primary and secondary school students. When asked how the new system could benefit students, a fellow secondary two student stated that she felt that unity among students would increase as pupils with different learning capabilities interact with each other. Moving forward, how will the new education system work?

Implementation from 2024 Firstly, students who will take the Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) in 2023 will be categorised into different posting groups based on their abilities: G1, G2, and G3. A student who obtains an AL score of 4-20 would be posted to the G3 subject level while a student who scores an AL score of 23-24 would have a posting to a G2 subject level. A student scoring an AL between 26 and 30 would be then posted to G1 level.This would mean that full subject-based banding would be the default across all 120 schools in Singapore.

That is one big step since introducing subjectbased banding to the initial 28 pilot schools, including PLMGS(S). The new system also allows for more combinations. For example, a student who obtains an AL score of 21-22 would be able to take more competent subjects at a G3 level, while less proficient subjects can be taken at a G2 level. This follows for G1 students, able to take subjects at both the G1 and G2 level. The abolishment of streaming allows students capable of taking a subject of a higher level to do so, opening up many opportunities and pathways along the way.

Effect of the new implementation In theory, this new policy is meant to be a way for students to better take charge of their own learning and take a range of subjects that interests and suits them. However, not everyone is happy with these new changes. Some say that while MOE claims to want to abolish streaming, this policy only succeeds in concealing it. To quote Mrs Oh, a housewife who was interviewed on todayonline, she stated how people would still find a way to compare their grades to others, and the discrimination would still be prevalent.

As such,it is not effective. Indeed, for a small percentage of students, this policy does help them, but what about the other students? For them, not much has changed.

Conclusion

Overall, this is a new step for all students who are under the system. It will take some time to fully adjust and be able to understand everything.

However, this does not mean that the learning has stopped and it might even be beneficial for everyone in terms of forging new friendships.

After the whirlwind of End-Of-Year Examinations, students finally find themselves on the threshold of a well-earned break.

The post EOY period ushers in a world of freedom and opportunity, offering a chance to unwind, explore new passions, and rediscover the simple joys of life beyond the stress of studying and doing well for our examinations. Some of the activities that we are able to experience include cycling, class bonding, and even educational talks by special guests! Let us now dive deeper to find out more about what activities we can look forward to, the thoughts about this by our fellow PL-Lites and what exactly has been lovingly planned for us by our teachers.

Several classes initially planned to enhance class bonding with a day at the beach. Unfortunately, due to the presence of haze, these classes have had to revise their plans and will now opt for a movie screening instead.

Photo Credits: myplstory During our interviews with one of the teachers affected by this change, we learned that the class leaders have decided to supplement the movie screening with two additional activities. Their goal is to foster stronger bonds among the students.

In the face of unexpected challenges, the adaptability and commitment of both students and teachers shine brightly. This shift in plans not only showcases their resilience but also highlights the importance they place on building lasting connections within the classroom. The class is now eagerly looking forward to the movie screening and the extra activities, all of which promise to be memorable experiences in their journey of strengthening the class's unity and camaraderie.

Engaging in post-examination stress-relieving outings with their class is beneficial for several reasons. These outings provide a much-needed break from the intense academic environment.

Spending time with classmates in a more relaxed setting helps create positive memories.

Socialising with classmates outside the classroom fosters a sense of camaraderie and strengthens the support system within the class. Moreover, these outings contribute to stress reduction by promoting a change of scenery and a shift in focus. Engaging in activities like having a picnic or watching movies as a class provides a mental break, allowing everyone to recharge.

In an interview, a PL-lite said that she thinks it would be fun and relaxing for students because they get to just enjoy the movie and sit with their friends in a comfortable movie theatre with air conditioning and that it would be a nice break after EOY examinations. She also mentioned that the journey to and from will help classmates bond more as they would have the opportunity to talk. She feels grateful towards the school for providing PL-Lites with this opportunity to get out of school to have fun with their classmates!

In conclusion, the post-examination period is an invaluable opportunity for students to refresh their spirits, broaden their horizons, and explore personal growth beyond academic confines. It is a time to relish life's multifaceted experiences, ensuring that learning continues in new and meaningful ways.

INTRODUCTION Recently, there has been a rising number of teachers turning to online games in their classrooms. Games such as Kahoot! and Blooket have become familiar to most students. Have you ever wondered what is the purpose of these games, or if they are actually beneficial for students’ learning? In this article, we will be covering what gamification is really about and how it is used in education.

GAMIFICATION IN EDUCATION First of all, what is gamification? Gamification refers to the usage of the elements of typical game-playing, such as point scoring and competition with others, in non-game environments to motivate and influence peoples’ behaviours. So, how is gamification related to education? Well, when educators apply game design elements to an educational setting to try to make learning more engaging, the lesson has been gamified. Games such as Kahoot! and Blooket are often used by educators to enhance students’ levels of engagement like how games do. Even video games and puzzle mobile games are shown to have educational benefits which include improved concentration, creativity, memory, teamwork as well as better problem-solving skills.

BENEFITS TO LEARNING Though video games are notorious for being incredibly addictive which results in poor sleep, higher levels of aggression and other negative impacts, when video games in the classroom are used correctly, the benefits can be endless.

During games such as Kahoot! and Blooket, students can apply their knowledge to the fun quizzes which test their knowledge. In addition to this, the time limit helps to speed up students’ response times to questions, training them to think faster. These games also transform learning into an enjoyable experience for students, which in turn helps them to retain information more easily.

Furthermore, such games help students to better understand difficult concepts.

Learning concepts through games is much more engaging than if done through presentation slides, and students may learn faster through educational games rather than traditional methods.

BETTER ENGAGEMENT In addition to the applied knowledge, gamified education can also provide better engagement for students. As mentioned earlier, listening to long lectures or endlessly scrolling through slides do not make for an exciting time. However, adding game-related elements helps generate excitement and break down difficult concepts into fun and enjoyable games. This keeps students engaged, and understand complicated topics at an easier scale. Secondly, the added competitiveness to the lesson drives us to think better and recall more facts. These games boost our desire to engage in the lesson due to a strong desire to win.

HOW IT CAN BE APPLIED It is commonly applied as a mental break that allows students to return to the lesson refreshed, an application of concepts or to promote group learning in classrooms. Gamification in education is already widely used in classrooms, with a few examples being Quizizz and Blooket. However, gamification should not be overused, and should not fully replace traditional teaching methods. Furthermore, too much gamification can cause distractions, with students not paying attention to the lesson and going to other websites. Gamified education is meant to add engagement and interest to complicated or abstract lessons to catch students’ attention, and should be used in moderation.

CONCLUSION In conclusion, gamification in education allows students to apply their knowledge, and have better engagement during lesson time. An appropriate amount of games in the classroom can really benefit students’ learning as they breathe life into education, boosting their motivation and giving them opportunities to revise their topics.

Have you ever wondered what the different architectural styles in Singapore are? From pre-colonisation until modern Singapore, Singapore’s architecture has changed significantly over the years.

INFLUENCE OF BRITISH COLONISATION In 1819, the Treaty of Friendship and Alliance was signed, starting Singapore’s era of colonial rule. It was from this point that colonial architectural styles began appearing in Singapore. However, buildings erected under the British were not strictly European. Many building styles were not only adapted to fit the warmer tropical climate of Singapore, but also fused with that of local Malay and Chinese culture, especially with more immigrants arriving and integrating into Singapore.

One example of such architecture is the black and white bungalows now littered across the country, so named for their dark wooden beams and walls lightened with whitewash. Black and white bungalows constructed from 1903 to 1941 were adapted from single-floor AngloIndian bungalows (the style brought over by the British), with features inspired by local houses being added and creating a fusion of mock-tudor, and native Malay architectural styles. Another example is Peranakan houses built in the 1840s to 1950s. Influenced by the Europeans, Malay and Chinese, a common feature of these buildings is their use of colourful decorative ceramic majolica tiles largely imported from Europe, bearing floral, fruity or even animal-featuring motifs of Art Nouveau and Art Deco designs, many with auspicious significance to the Chinese. For example pineapples which symbolise wealth and prosperity are commonly depicted, along with peonies representing wealth, as well as peacocks representing divinity and dignity. These Peranakan houses are now preserved among our cityscapes as a showcase of our heritage.

That said, some structures in Singapore of the time were still constructed through purely colonial architectural styles. This is seen in the well-renowned Raffles Hotel in Singapore’s central region. The hotel which opened in 1887 is of Neo-Renaissance design, distinguishable by its symmetrical composition and structure and featuring round arches and classical orders – Greek and Roman architectural styles – such as Corinthian and Doric columns.

With long verandahs and numerous palladian windows, the building maintains its European quality while keeping its interior cool, especially before air conditioning was installed.

Though its layout has evolved several times over the years with expansions and renovations, these features are still present and prominent, preserving our colonial heritage and background.

KEY STYLES One of the many things Singapore is known for is that it is a Green City . Well, one of the ways that this is shown is the way greenery is incorporated into buildings, and the exact term is biophilic architecture. It allows for improved comfort through the inclusion of natural elements in buildings such as non-artificial light, water or plants. One example in Singapore is the renowned iconic building, Jewel, which was built in 2019 beside Changi Airport. Designed by the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) architect Moshe Safdie, Jewel is best known for its 40 metres tall waterfall – the tallest indoor waterfall worldwide – and its garden on the fifth level. The transparent rooftop allows natural sunlight to enter the building, allowing for fewer LED light bulbs to be used, leading to less damage done to the environment. Another example of biophilic structures in Singapore is the popular tourist attraction Gardens by the Bay. These biophilic architectures build on the efforts of the late founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, who always had a vision of Singapore as a Garden City.

Another iconic and modern building in Singapore is Marina Bay Sands, built in 2010. According to architect Moshe Safdie, this 207 metres tall resort and convention centre was inspired by card decks. It is also commonly known for having the world’s largest rooftop infinity pool and is the sixth largest hotel in Asia!

Since our independence in 1965, Singapore has gone through massive economic improvement that has resulted in the transformation of our third-world state into a first-world nation today. Hence, the way our buildings looked before and now are very different. This can be seen in our Housing & Development Board (HDB). Before the establishment of HDB, the first public housing authority was named Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT), with the first public housing built in Queenstown in the 1950s. After Singapore gained independence, HDB replaced SIT and built 54,000 flats within 5 years. These high-rise flat blocks are now a common sight in Singapore, providing convenient amenities .

CONCLUSION Singapore’s architecture styles in the early 1800s to the 1900s were influenced by the British, from the Anglo-Indian Bungalows to the Peranakan houses, the different houses were designed to suit different communities. Even now, we can still see remnants of colonial era styles like the Raffles Hotel. Today, architecture styles are very different from before, with many iconic tourist attractions found here in Singapore. The next time we go out, let’s try to spot the way greenery is incorporated into buildings – biophilic architecture – and the different modern architecture styles!

Spine Problems Among Teens Written by: Elizabeth Ban (3.2), Tan Sheena (3.8), Chloe Peh (2.4) Designed by: Pooja (1.8) Have you ever wondered why your spine is checked during health screenings? Well, this is because a spine condition known as scoliosis is commonly found in adolescent and teenage girls today. In this article, we will be taking a closer look at what scoliosis is and the reasons why they are commonly found in teenage girls.

The daily battle with scoliosis The condition known as Scoliosis occurs when the typically straight spine curves horizontally, resulting in an ‘S’ shape. Mia Hew from Sec 3.6, who struggles with severe scoliosis, recalled her struggles in dealing with her condition, saying, “I faced the inability to do certain exercises such as sit-ups and if (I) over exerted myself it would cause severe pain. Mild scoliosis may also cause shoulder misalignment which looks both aesthetically unpleasant and painful when carrying normal school bags even without many books inside.” However, the struggles are different for each person with scoliosis, depending on the severity of the condition.

What are the types of scoliosis?

There are four main types of scoliosis. Firstly, Idiopathic Scoliosis, which is the most common type of scoliosis. The word 'idiopathic' means 'of unknown causes', as there is no identified cause of this type of scoliosis. The second type is Congenital Scoliosis, which is caused by spine abnormalities or defects at birth and commonly associated with other organ problems.

Thirdly, Neuromuscular Scoliosis, which occurs when the brain loses control of the nerves and muscles supporting the spine and is commonly caused by conditions such as Cerebral Palsy and Muscular Dystrophy. The fourth type of scoliosis, Degenerative Scoliosis, may occur because of degeneration of the discs in the spine, or arthritis in the joints that connect them. Unlike the first three kinds of Scoliosis.

This more commonly occurs slightly later in life

Why is it common among adolescents?

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is one of the most prevalent types of scoliosis in teenagers. This curvature of the spine happens as we mature because of the discs between the vertebral bodies of the spine wearing out and they begin to collapse, or prolapse, and become less flexible as they wear out.

This condition occurs earlier and more commonly in females than males, and is seen in 1.4% of girls aged 11 to 12 and 2.2% among those 13 to 14 years old, which shows that scoliosis is more prevalent the older the child.

Common medical solutions Bracing is a method used to halt the progression of the curve. It can treat curves greater than 25 degrees. However, it does not decrease the degree of the spinal curve. Bracing is suggested for growing children with advancing curves.

Surgery is advised for children with spinal curves above 40 degrees or more than 50 degrees at any age. Research shows that if left untreated, curves greater than 50 degrees will carry on progressing into adulthood.

Mia Hew from Sec 3.6 had reached the point beyond which surgery was required, which was a spinal curve of 42° in both directions. Treating scoliosis surgically prevents increased progression of the curve, manages the curve when brace treatment proves to be ineffective, enhances unwanted cosmetic appearance, and decreases discomfort or postural 13 fatigue.

Although this solution prevents harmful long term effects and pain, surgery also presents short-term disadvantages and inconveniences including, according to Mia, “the inability to do even simple things like walking. Walking for even a short period of time would cause me to feel faint due to the severity of blood loss and nerve pain caused by the surgery itself. Physiotherapy was also a post-operation module that I had to go through, although the exercises were somewhat simple, they’re painful for that particular period."

Solutions One of the ways to lessen the pain of scoliosis is through engaging in physical activities. This helps to reduce the amount of time being in a sedentary position for those with scoliosis. One of the most highly recommended exercises to help people with scoliosis is called the 'Schroth Method'. Schroth's Method aims to limit the curve from getting worse through a special program of physical therapy. A physical therapist helps in guiding patients to do personalised exercises. This method involves Schroth therapy, a combination of breathing, strength training and posture awareness, helping to improve one's posture, breathing and even reducing the amount of pain experienced. However, patients are expected to continue with the exercises at home to ensure consistent results.

Other ways to help better manage scoliosis from home includes taking up exercises like pilates or yoga which provides strength and flexibility to improve posture. There are plenty of online videos that feature yoga poses or pilates routines that can be done in the comforts of your home. By being proactive, it may help in lessening the curvature of the spine and helps in managing the pain.

Conclusion Scoliosis is an increasingly common condition that some of us may have that should not go ignored. By noticing the symptoms earlier and seeking treatment, these problems would be less severe to manage. Although scoliosis has plenty of complications, learning how to manage it from home and through consistent treatment can lead to better recovery.

Common toxicity traits in friendships

and how to deal with them

Did you know that friends and social circles are able to influence one's personality? Most of the time, one would have more positivity in their life because they have good friends.

Unfortunately, there are some friendships that can break a person, resulting in negative energy that affects one's life rather than positive energy. However, how does a person ensure that they make a positive difference to their friend's life? The following describes what not to do if you want a positive friendship, and what you should do instead.

Instead of jealousy, celebrate one another's achievements What is jealousy? Jealousy often stems from one's own insecurities and self-doubt. There are many factors that can cause friends to be jealous of each other, namely accomplishments, looks or relationships, due to the person's internal insecurity. Instead of genuinely supporting each other's success, jealous individuals may attempt to outdo or undermine their friends. They might also turn their relationship into a harmful competition rather than a source of mutual support, leading to misunderstandings and strained relationships.

On the other hand, a good friendship would have one sincerely congratulating the other party for their accomplishments and achievements. A good friendship should have genuine and wholehearted feelings of happiness for a friend compared to bitter feelings of envy underneath. However, jealousy, envy and insecurity cannot completely be cut out at times. What one can do however, is to choose how to correctly express such negative feelings. Instead of keeping such emotions to themselves, one should actually talk to a trusted adult about such insecurities. This way, advice and support can be given, and the friendship would not turn sour.

Instead of gossiping, respect a friend's decisions Gossiping is very common among teenagers today. Many teenagers gossip to their friends, or even amongst their cliques. However, this is not only a bad habit, but also brings out many detrimental effects in a relationship. For one, when one party shares gossip about their companion without their consent, it results in a breach of trust.

Friends typically confide in each other due to their mutual belief that their conversations and secrets will remain private.

When this trust is violated, it can cause deep emotional harm and a loss of trust in the friend who gossiped, and can also attract negative attention to the person being discussed, giving rise to feelings of humiliation and distress of that individual. Rather than talking bad about a companion, or even other people, one should remember not to judge someone based on their decisions, life choices and personality. One should respect their friends for who they are, and should not talk bad about them to others. When the conversation is about to be divreted to gossip, one should instead divert the attention to other conversation topics, such as academics, hobbies or maybe plans for the rest of the day. A friendship should be wholesome and should not have any party's secrets spread, nor have their reputation ruined because of it.

Instead of being defensive, be open to criticism

When a person is criticised for their behaviour, there are many possible reactions and responses that that person could make. Defensiveness is when the criticised person would blame the other party for the situation, using excuses to turn the situation around and pin the fault on the other person, rather than acknowledging their own faults. Such behaviour is usually exhibited as a form of self-defence when one does not want to feel hurt by criticism.

It could be that the criticised person holds the belief that they are an innocent victim and not at fault, or when the criticised person feels hurt and upset about the criticism. However, this is a bad communication mechanism to use as the other party would feel frustrated that their own point of view is ignored in favour of the criticised person. In some cases, the other party would even believe that they themselves are at fault instead, or perhaps even become defensive themselves. This leads to a vicious cycle between friends, causing the friendship to turn sour.

Instead of being defensive, it is better to set aside one's pride and try and hold a proper conversation with the other person to see their point of view. When one feels that they could be too emotional to hold such conversations, they can seek help to cope with such emotions from someone like a therapist or a counsellor such as school counsellors. These professionals are trained to help a person emotionally regulate themselves properly, and with seeking such help, neither a person nor their friend would need to deal with defensive behaviour, and would instead be able to hold proper conversations.

Conclusion It is crucial to avoid common traits of what makes up a bad friendship, and it is also just as important to follow traits that instead make a friendship positive and strong. Negative feelings that may affect a friendship should be addressed using open communication and by seeking help from a trusted adult or a professional. By properly addressing such aspects of toxicity and staying wary of it, one's friendship is bound to be much more fulfilling.
