Since the game of golf was inaugurated in Hong Kong, there has not been a more colossal event. Being the first new private golf course in close to half a century, Plover Cove Golf Club (PCGC) is an inexorable force in the making. Dabu, or ‘ large strides’ in Chinese, was the original name of Tai Po. Residents used to traverse the dense jungle surrounding the township in their daily lives. A thousandyear-old history of pearl farming and active trade have long been closely tied to the livelihood of Tai Po locals and contributes to the prosperity of the times. During the Southern Han Dynasty, Tai Po Sea, now Tolo Harbour, was one of two prime pearl farming ports along with the reputed Hepu. The pearls and tortoise shells collected here were used to adorn an imperial palace in Canton and were highly revered. An emperor set up Meichuan Sector in Tai Po Sea and 2,000-strong troop was sent to guard it.
Tai Po was also a major port for exporting underglaze blue porcelain, often associated with the imperial, across Asia. In the Qianlong Reign, villages of Luk Heung were founded along the Plover Cove. Ting Kok Village, which brings us closer to the golf course site, was established as early as 1688 as a multi-clan village and 12 Hakka villages constituted Shuen Wan Heung, forming the ‘half-farming, half-fishing’ way of life that has pervaded the locale for centuries.
The sprightly dynamics of folklife and throbbing commerce paved the ground for the beginning of a new juncture in the evolution into modern times.
Urban development ensued and was marked by a few milestones. In 1902, Tai Po Road first commenced service. Subsequently in 1910, the Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR) British Section opened. Together with the introduction of the Castle Peak Road and the Tolo Highway, the transport network of the New Territories is fully fledged. Industry and recreational activities took flight. The confluence promoted urban mobility and improved the livelihood of residents.
In modern history, Tai Po has seen major events of communities resettle. A large number of Hakka repopulated Tai Po as a result of the Great Excavation Order imposed by the Qing Government to move coastal communities inland. The case in point would be the all-important construction of the Plover Cove Reservoir in 1960s. It was the first fresh water reservoir in the world to be carved out of the sea and initiated fresh water supplies from the mainland by reaching the First Agreement with Guangdong authorities. A grand migration of the people in the villages of Luk Heung began as a result. By the time the last dam raising was completed, the water storage capacity was brought up to 230 million cubic metres, trebling that of Hong Kong. As our population burgeoned, it became the lifeline of not only the locality, but Hong Kong at large. This mobility attests to the resilience and amenability of the people. Movement and adaptability are in the blood of a thriving populace.
With a mature transport network and thriving industry, the town is promised a hearty pulse as rich as the Poon Choi banquets that grace the villages every year.
The ideals of Plover Cove Golf Club are steeped in the soul of Tai Po. It is an undertaking that breathes new life into a fatigued landfill site. By the same token, the long-lost pearl farming tradition has hopes to revival in Tai Po by enthusiasts.
The iridescent shine of pearls is gleaming again by the Tolo Harbour. Pinctada fucata, the oyster species that produces the famed Akoya pearls, is used in the Pearl Farming Pilot Project. Along the pearls, every part of the oyster can be sold and the water is meanwhile cleaned and helps in fish farming. It aims to revitalise a high-value industry by leveraging Hong Kong’s position as the world ’s largest exporter for pearls (as of 2022), bringing the latest grafting techniques back and nurturing a new generation of professionals.
Our golf course site has a storied past. As part of the New Towns Development Plan in the 1970s, reclamation began in 1976 for the first industrial estate in Hong Kong, Tai Po Industrial Estate, and also the first public housing estate, Tai Yuen Estate, adjacent to Ting Kok Road. Fifty-seven percent of population in Tai Po now live on reclaimed land. In 2022, full land premium was paid for Tai Po Town Lot. No. 246 along Ting Kok Road, Shuen Wan for the construction of our golf course. More than 5.6 million square feet of land will be revived into a cutting-edge and family-oriented, world-class championship golf course and comprehensive clubhouse expected to open in 2027 for the enjoyment of the beneficiary of Hong Kong.

Our course will prove a touchstone for our members and their friends and family. We have winnowed down to the best latest technologies to ensure members have the best experience in play while endeavours every step in the process to make it environmentally sustainable.
Under the guidance of our agronomy consultant Turfgrass Golf Course Excellence, which is an expert technical service provider to GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf, our golf course incorporates the subsurface moisture management system assists in providing ideal soil moisture, temperature and aeration to the USGA recommended greens. This revolutionary technology maintains ideal root zone temperatures beneath the green or playing surface, ensuring exemplary year-round greens conditions. One hundred percent Zoysia grass which requires tremendously less water to maintain, will be used, making it substantially more sustainable.
The property ’s dome-shaped elevation houses an intricate storm water drainage system and sand capping with underdrainage that effortlessly whisks away rainwater to ensure optimal playing conditions. Plover Cove Golf Club will be a shot maker ’s golf course. Precision will be more important than power.
Playing over 6,600 yards, multiple tees on all the holes will accommodate golfers of varying abilities. With narrow treelined fairways, keeping the ball in play is more important than how far the golfer can hit it.
The course will have a great variety of terrain holes running uphill, downhill, across slopes, and some holes atop high plateaus with the dramatic views of the Tolo Harbor and surrounding mountains.
The first at Plover Cove Golf Club begins with an uphill tee shot to one of the more generous landing areas on the course. The approach shot to the elevated green is in the spirit of the second hole of the Pine Valley Golf Club –the top ranked course in the world – with a series of cross bunkers built into the face of the rise to the green. The bunkers are more psychological than penal, as the green sits over 40 yards beyond them.

The second hole is the longest par 4 on the course. The tee shot rises slightly to a crowned landing area that is the highest point on the course affording views in all directions. The green is a “ horizon” green – meaning no framing and a steep drop-off behind it. It might be wise to play this hole more as a short par 5 and leave the approach a little short and chip to this green rather to try to hold it with a long approach.
The third tees off near the club entrance and doglegs left around a steep tree-covered slope to the left. While it might be tempting to try to “cut the corner ” with the tee shot, the smart play is to hit to the right side of the fairway to get the best view of the slightly downhill approach to a deep, but narrow green. Be cautious of the bunkers to the right of the green as they sit well below the surface of the green.
While fourth hole is the shortest on the course, club selection will be important as the green is over 35 yards from front to back. It is better to miss to the left where the ball may bounce off the slope toward the green than to the right where the player will face an uphill chip or bunker shot.
While not the longest par 4 on the front nine, the fifth is probably the most difficult. The tee shot is uphill to a narrow fairway sloping left to right. Accuracy is the premium on this shot. The most important thing is to just get the ball on the fairway with a tree-covered slope to the left and bunkers to the right even if it means hitting less than a driver. The approach is the most uphill shot on the course. Make sure to hit enough club to get the ball over the stream crossing the fairway and all the way up to the green benched into the side of the hill. No one should be disappointed with a bogey 5 on this hole.
A little bit of a breather after the last hole. This hole plays across the top of the high plateau in the middle of the course. Not an overly demanding tee shot, unless one tries to carry the left side fairway bunkers. The approach, while not long, is tricky. A delicate touch will be needed into this horizon green with a deep pot bunker right in front of the green.
The seventh goes back across the high plateau offering views in the opposite direction of the previous hole. The tee shot is more demanding than the sixth hole with several fairway bunkers guarding a narrower fairway landing area. The approach is to an open fronted green which may favor a bump-and-run type of approach shot. But the golfer does need to worry about the steep drop-off from the back right of the green.
Club selection will be critical on this par 3. The green is one of the largest on the course, so pin position will be important and the green is well guarded by bunkers. The only par 3 on the top plateau means that wind will also be a key factor in playing this hole.
The finishing hole of the front nine may be the most dramatic on the golf course. The tee shot is to a landing area that is on a point of the upper plateau. From this point there will be excellent views down to the clubhouse and the harbor beyond and the surrounding mountains. Once the player is done taking in the views, they must decide how they want to play the rest of the hole. The green sits 12m below the first landing area and better players may be tempted to try reaching this par 5 green in two shots. But beware, there is stream crossing immediately in front of the green with bunkers to the right and left. Safer play is to place a second shot to the lower fairway and leave a short pitch shot to the green.
The back nine begins similar to the front nine with an uphill tee shot. But the tee shot on 10 is much more perilous than the first hole. The narrower fairway is bordered by a stream flowing down the right side of the hole. If the stream can be avoided on the tee shot, the green is guarded by a pond on the right front. It is not a long hole, but one that needs to be played with finesse.
Playing from tees benched onto the side of the hill, this hole offers the chance for the longer hitters to let loose a little. The fairway landing area is more open than most of the holes with only a single bunker at over 310 yards from the back tee. The longer approach is to a fairly open green with the nesting bird sanctuary as a backdrop. Looking to the left offers a great view of the harbor and its surrounds.
This par 3 is what many might call a “postcard ” hole.
The hole drops sharply to a green set with an immediate backdrop of the harbor and all the surrounding area. The greatest challenge to this is to keep your focus on the target and to determine the effect of the 15m drop to the green.
Even though it is the shortest par 5 on the course, the thirteenth hole might be unlucky for many as plenty of trouble awaits. The tee shot is uphill 8-10m to a narrow fairway with a steep drop-off to the left. The fairway bunkers are “saving” bunkers, to catch golf balls and prevent them going further down the steep slope.
This is the hole long hitters have been waiting for. This is their chance to try to drive a par 4. But it also carries plenty of risk. There is a stream flowing down from the right that must be carried and several fairway bunkers at the end of the landing area plus the elevated green might be difficult to hold. The safer play is to place a tee shot down the fairway and leave a short approach to the green benched out from the hillside. But even that approach carries the risk of the false front that protects the green and may cause the ball to roll all the way back to the cross bunkers.
This hole may present one of the more dramatic tee shots on the course. From an elevated tee, players hit across a valley with a pond and stream well below to a sloped fairway rising back up from the valley. The tee shot must be maneuvered between bunkers short left and long right. The approach is to a diagonally shaped green protected by bunkers short left and short right. There is a sharp drop-off behind the green, so don’t be long with this shot.
The tee shot on the sixteenth hole is unique. The tees are on the top of a plateau but the fairway drops down so the golfer is hitting their tee shot to a blind fairway in the valley floor. Hit the shot on line with the green in the distance and the player will be in good position for their approach to the green. The narrow green extends out from the end of the point with high elevation to the right. There is a stream crossing the fairway at the base of the slope going up to the green but should be easily avoided.
This par 3 starts a tough finishing stretch. This is the longest par 3 on the course and very narrow. The hole is benched out from the steep tree-covered hillside on the right and drops off quickly to the left. The green is open in front with the front portion much wider than the back of the green. Playing a little short – but on line – may be the best play on this hole.
The finishing hole is a strong finish to the Plover Cove Golf Club. The tee shot is slightly uphill to a sloping fairway reminiscent of the seventeenth hole at the Olympic Club, site of several US Opens. If the golfer can find the fairway, they must decide how to play the cross bunkers. If the golfer can carry them with their second shot, they will be rewarded with a short approach to the green. But even if the player decides to lay-up short of the bunkers, reaching the green is still possible, albeit with a longer approach.

Mr. Kinney Chan graduated from De Montfort University in the UK with a degree in Interior Design and holds a Bachelor of Arts. He has over 30 years of experience in interior design and project management. Mr. Chan has worked for renowned design companies in the United Kingdom and the United States participating in numerous large-scale international interior design projects. He has also served as the president of the Hong Kong Interior Design Association, a director of the Hong Kong Design Centre, and an advisor to the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). His works span hotels, bars, restaurants, residential homes, commercial shops, and corporate offices, earning numerous international awards, including the A’ Design Award from Italy, the German iF Communication Design Award, the Japan JCD Design Award Silver Prize, the Interior Design Gold Key Award from the USA, and many more, establishing his influence globally.

Bequest with international exposure, we knew this was an opportunity to make a statement - A statement to reflect our culture, one that is endearing and worth celebrating.
In the past two decades, we have witnessed enormous strides in the progress of Chinese contemporary design. Standards are formed; creativity is cultured; legends are born. We knew we wanted to be a part of this movement –it is constantly evolving, form breaking and pleasantly surprising; qualities we value and aspire.
Hong Kong is a unique community, born to Chinese traditions and her principles, influenced by western habits. Milk tea is our preferred choice of beverage, yet it is lauded not in its traditional format, but for Hong Kong’s very own local twist.
Our goal is to represent this distinctive quality in a pioneering school under the Chinese contemporary design discipline –The Hong Kong Contemporary.

While most other golf clubs rely on recreational land lease, we are resolved to protect the right of patrons by committing full land premium to privatise and secure their progeny their playing rights at Plover Cove, forming a gentry coterie and a firm foundation for golf and community cultivation generations to come.
Golfing at our birthplace seems grafted from a distant time. For close to half a century the trail has been stagnant but we are now here to create our own. If we have any success in illustrating our will in this booklet, it should be evident we are committed to the finest in the world in designing a course with precision at its crux, while providing golfers with comfort at our clubhouse à la mode with the same high bar for the game. RESPECTING THE ELEMENTS
敬畏自然 ，珍爱环境
While we leave no stone unturned when it comes to the game itself, the surrounding natural backdrop has provided us with a cardinal canvas.
Mitigation measures are taken in minimising potential adverse impacts on night roosting of local protected species, namely, the Collared Crow and the Black Kite. We’ve undertaken to preserve a consequential portion of existing tree groups and compensatory planting of new trees within the bounds of our golf course. The course is designed to blend with the native landscape, featuring indigenous plants, woods, and water resources, while providing habitats for fauna and promoting biodiversity.
As a matter of course, our hearts and flesh are poured into the care for our very own Incense Trees (Aquilaria sinensis) native to our turf, which is a National Level 2 protected wild plant species in Hong Kong and Mainland China. It is a Near Threatened (NT) species listed under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance (Cap. 586).
In connection to our golf course site, an ecologically unequalled site located in Sha Lo Tung, was put in good hands for conservation purposes. In fact, it is a priority site ranked second in ecological importance only after Ramsar site at Mai Po Inner Deep Bay under the government New Nature Conservation Policy.
These are mere instances of our dedication to leave our mark in history without leaving a mark in the nature that nurtures us.
A golf course project of such magnitude and investment is rare in the world if anything akin even exists. Being a hive for industry experts of the highest calibre from around the world, we concoct the perfect cradle for the cultivation of new generations of talents and connoisseurs in a new scale.
Along the ranks of our corps d ’elite are esteemed designer Dana Fry who is serving on the Board of Governors at the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASCGA), and Jason Straka who has won the prestigious ASGCA Design Excellence Award. Together they have created award-winning golf course designs such as Erin Hills Golf Course which hosted the 2017 US Open. Moreover, world-leading golf course consultancy Turfgrass Golf Course Excellence brought in their depths of knowledge in using the latest technology in developing, enhancing, and maintaining golf courses just to name a few.
They will serve as the incipit to a new chapter of cultivating golfing excellence in both play and industry in Hong Kong.
We believe that in the test of time, our legacy in uplifting the paradigm of golf and the boundless network of influence will thrive in our cherished community.
