Trail. Lace up, gear up, and hit the trails because adventure is calling!
Experience a hidden gem of the Midwest and exceptional mountain bike trails at Standing Rocks County Park by competing in the third annual Standing Rocks Enduro.
The Standing Rocks Enduro is Wisconsin’s first and only enduro-style competition.
Held the third Saturday of August, the Standing Rocks Enduro is a 4-, 6-, or 8-run competition open to youth, beginners and advanced riders.
“This is a great first-time enduro for people wanting to get into the sport,” event planner Scott Cole said.
An enduro is a timed mountain biking event with multiple stages or runs. Riders start in 30-second intervals rather than all at one time. Each run lasts one to two minutes. The lowest
time of all combined stages for each division wins.
“The Sport level is for more experienced riders,” Cole said. “Beginners are welcome, and all runs are rollable. The stages aren’t necessarily the same trails that are always out there. We have a lot of riders who visit Standing Rocks regularly, so we wanted to make it challenging for them as well.”
Trails range in difficulty from green to double black.
Mountain biking trails were first introduced at Standing Rocks County Park in 2003 by the Point Area Single Trails Association, and the group continues to make improvements to the trails. Cole said the Standing Rocks Enduro helps PASTA raise money to maintain the trails.
The 2023 Standing Rocks Enduro
brought in 160 riders from across 5 states. There was a mix of skill levels among the competitors, and Cole expects an even larger event this year.
“August is a downtime for mountain biking in the Midwest, so we thought it was a great time to host an event,” Cole said.
The Enduro also offers an opportunity for spectators to learn by watching, Cole said.
Some spectators brought bikes last year to ride from stage to stage, while others walked.
Standing Rocks County Park spans 450 acres, and Cole said he recommends that spectators are prepared to hike or bike.
“It’s a laid-back event with just a bunch of people having a good time,” he said. “Enduro is all about fun.”

Fireworks, food and great family fun are waiting for you at Celebrate Plover.
Held the last weekend of July, Celebrate Plover is an annual celebration of all the great things that Plover has to offer. The twoday festival kicks off on Friday evening with live music and several activities followed by a full day of fun on Saturday, which concludes with an incredible fireworks display.
“The fireworks show was the best I have ever seen,” said Cassidy Ferguson. “It was one that cannot be beaten.”
Ferguson attended Celebrate Plover for the first time in two
years ago, but says she had so much fun that it will become a yearly tradition.
CeeJay Auman, who has attended Celebrate Plover for many years, also loves the fireworks show.
“The fireworks show is absolutely unbeatable,” Auman said. “It’s a magical way to end a day filled with joy and excitement for the whole family.”
No matter a person’s age, there is something for everyone at Celebrate Plover. The children’s play area features bounce houses and a variety of games. There’s a beer garden and live music throughout the event for adults to enjoy.
“The event’s versatility in catering to different age groups is one of the reasons why we love it,” Auman said. “From watching the local firefighter water fights in the morning to the abundance of kids’ activities like games, bounce houses, balloon animals, and crafts, there’s never a dull moment. Celebrate Plover truly offers something for everyone.”
Auman also loves that her entire family and friend group can enjoy spending the day together despite having a variety of interests.
“As a mom of a four-year-old, what I most enjoy about Celebrate Plover is how much fun my little one has at this wonderful event,”
• Admission and parking are free.
• Celebrate Plover will be held rain or shine.
• Pets are not permitted on the festival grounds during the event.
• Food and marketplace vendors sell products. Some vendors are cash only.
• Reserve your spot on the lawn early for the fireworks show. You will need to bring your own blankets or chairs.
• Bring swimsuits for the swim area in Lake Pacawa or to play in the Splash Pad.
Auman said.
The full schedule for this year’s event will be released closer to summer. The best way to stay up to date is to follow Celebrate
Plover on Facebook.
“I loved the vendors, activities and just the overall atmosphere,” Ferguson said. “Seeing so many smiling faces and families there was heartwarming. There is something for everyone to do, big or small.”
Heritage Park offers visitors the chance to journey back in time to experience what life in Portage County was like from 1870 to 1910. Open seasonally, Heritage Park features 11 historic buildings that have been relocated to the site from throughout the county. From a train depot and rail car to a schoolhouse to family homes, Heritage Park will inspire visitors to dive deeper into history, perhaps, even their own lineage. In addition to operating as a Historical Museum, the Portage County Historical Society hosts several free events at Heritage Park throughout the year.
Heritage Days is a two-day music and heritage festival held in June featuring live demonstrations, music and crafts throughout both days. During Heritage Days, all historic buildings are also open for exploring. Admission to Heritage Days is free.
“History is cool,” said John Harry, PCHS Executive Director.
“Heritage Days is free, family fun with a wide range of activities and entertainment that appeals to people of all ages.”
Last year, PCHS launched a new annual event in December. Santa’s Christmas Village takes visitors on a journey to the North
Pole. Promising festive fun, Santa’s Christmas Village offers photos with Santa, carolers, a make-believe train ride to the North Pole and more! Children will enjoy the enchantment of the holiday season with this magical experience.
The Portage County Historical Society also offers group bus tours and walking tours throughout the county.

When Eric Renfert was just 11 years old, he attended the Heritage Days Festival with his mom. This singular trip inspired his desire to learn the craft of blacksmithing, which is still a hobby today.
“I just kept dragging my mom back to the blacksmith’s shop,” Renfert said. “I must have stood there leaning on the doorway for five hours that day watching plain bars of iron being turned into beautiful artistic twists and scrolls. From that day on, I was hooked.”
Renfert said he got a small anvil that year that helped him ease into blacksmithing. His dad even drove him to the Upper Midwest Blacksmith Association’s Hammer Down event. Renfert began more properly blacksmithing in 2018. A few years ago, Renfert returned to Heritage Days and found John
Berg, the same man who inspired him as a child, still blacksmithing at Heritage Park. Berg has been blacksmithing there since the 1990s. At that time, Renfert shared with Berg that he had inspired his own love of blacksmithing during his childhood. It was then that Berg asked Renfert if he’d like to volunteer his time in the shop at Heritage Park, working alongside Berg.
Since then, Berg and Renfert both work together to share blacksmithing with visitors to Heritage Park.
“It’s been amazing to work with John in the shop that started it all,” Renfert said. “It has been an awesome experience to get to use some of the big historic tooling and share it in action with the community.”
Today, Renfert can be found
volunteering in the shop alongside Berg during major events at Heritage Park like Heritage Days and Santa’s Christmas Village. Renfert hopes visitors leave with a sense of connection to the trade. Renfert enjoys volunteering alongside Berg and said they each have a unique style when it comes to blacksmithing.
“It’s even more fun to work alongside him,” Renfert said. “I come at blacksmithing as an engineer, with a lot of focus on making tools and structural objects and a deep interest in some of the underlying metallurgy. John is much more artistic and has a ton of historical knowledge. We learn a ton from each other and can play off each other’s knowledge when answering the wide variety of questions visitors ask.”

Nestled in the heart of Plover, Purple Basil is more than a food truck; it’s a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and partnership.
Purple Basil, a veteran-, woman-, and minority-owned business, was founded in 2020 by Carolina Corral and Taylor Okerlund. The dynamic pair duo was brought together by military service and a shared love for food. The pair have redefined the local dining scene with fresh, high-quality, and Italian-inspired dishes.
Their journey began in 2012 when they met while serving in the military. Their work took them across the country and overseas, exposing them to diverse cultures and flavors. What started as a friendship evolved into something more, and in 2018, Corral and her
daughter, Valentina, moved to Wisconsin to begin a new chapter with Okerlund.
Corral’s passion for cooking ignited around the time she was 12 years old when she was inspired by a French toast recipe she saw on PBS. Her love for food led her to pursue a Culinary Arts degree in 2007, gaining hands-on experience in kitchens across Texas and California. Even during her time in the military, she found ways to share culinary creations with those around her. Okerlund, on the other hand, had always been a food enthusiast rather than a chef, but Corral’s influence expanded his palate and turned their travels into culinary adventures.
The idea for Purple Basil stemmed from Corral’s exposure to vibrant food truck cultures in both Texas
and California. Recognizing the lack of food trucks in Central Wisconsin, the couple began exploring the idea further. After extensive research, they discovered that pasta-focused food trucks were almost nonexistent in the state. With support from the Small Business Development Center’s Entrepreneurial Training Program, their vision began taking shape, and Purple Basil was born. Last year, the food truck found a semi-permanent home in Plover. The Purple Basil Terrace has created a new dining experience. As the first food truck venue with outdoor seating, it offers a welcoming space where intimate conversations and lively gatherings flourish. Corral and Okerlund take pride in cultivating a sense of community, ensuring that every guest not only enjoys a
delicious meal but also feels part of something special.
“Our goal is for guests to leave with a happy stomach and, if it’s their first time, a new perspective on food trucks,” Corral said. “We want people to see that amazing food can come from unexpected places.”
Running a business together while raising a family is no easy feat, but they have found a rhythm that works. They credit constant, open communication and a clear division of responsibilities.
“We’ve made family time a priority,” Corral said. “During food truck season, we started a tradition of Friday night pasta dinners on the terrace. It’s our way of slowing down and enjoying what we’ve built together.”
Their strong partnership extends beyond the kitchen. While Taylor takes charge of logistics and customer service, Carolina focuses on perfecting each dish. And despite the countless hours spent
together, they wouldn’t have it any other way.
For those visiting Purple Basil for the first time, quality is at the forefront of every dish. They use imported Italian goods, fresh (locally sourced when possible) vegetables, and never-frozen proteins. Their sauces and meatballs are all made inhouse, ensuring an elevated dining experience. Their must-try dish?
The signature Italian Nachos—a delicious twist that continues to surprise and delight customers.
One of the most memorable compliments they’ve received came on the same day from two men who were half-Italian.
“Both said our marinara sauce tasted just like their mothers’ and grandmothers’ cooking, something they hadn’t found anywhere else,” Corral said. “There’s no higher praise than bringing up memories of home-cooked family recipes.”
Enjoy the terrace WednesdaySaturday from April-October, depending on the weather!
Q: Who is the better chef?
Taylor: Carolina is by far the better chef! She has the passion and creativity to keep delivering the best food possible!
Q: Favorite dish on your menu?
Taylor: Italian Mac & Cheese - It has a rich blend of melted cheeses, crispy bacon, and a garlic bread topping!
Carolina: Mixed-Sauce pasta because it has a perfect balance of Alfredo and marinara sauce tossed with grilled chicken and broccoli!
Q: If you could prepare a meal for anyone, who would you choose?
A: Both agree, Anthony Bourdain because “he had a passion for street food and exploring cultures through cuisine. We think he would’ve really appreciated what we serve.”

A tradition of great food and even better company
More than just a meal, dining at a Wisconsin supper club is an experience to be cherished. Wrapped in nostalgia, warmth, and Midwestern charm, a supper club dining experience will leave visitors feeling inspired.
Supper Clubs have been a staple of Wisconsin dining for generations, offering a unique blend of delicious, hearty food, handcrafted cocktails, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels like home. Unlike traditional restaurants, supper clubs offer a slow-paced, communal dining experience that encourages conversation and relaxation.
One of the most beloved supper clubs in Wisconsin is Sky Club Supper Club in Plover. This iconic
establishment has been serving up tradition and excellence for decades, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to experience an authentic Wisconsin supper club. Sky Club is owned by the Fruend family, with brothers Eric and Patrick co-owning and operating the restaurant. Eric can often be found behind the bar serving up their signature “Shifty’s” Old Fashioned cocktails, a must-order for any Sky Club dining experience. The menu is filled with Wisconsin supper club classics, including hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood, and their famous prime rib. The Friday fish fry is a local favorite, offering perfectly battered cod and walleye served with all the classic fixings.
Sky Club is also home to the first salad bar in the United States, which was added as a dining offering in the 1950s. Beyond the food, Sky Club’s atmosphere embodies everything that makes supper clubs so special.
The warm wood interior, friendly staff, and sense of history create an ambiance that invites guests to sit back, relax, and enjoy the moment. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, you’ll feel like part of the family. The Sky Club Supper Club is the perfect place to experience this cherished Midwest tradition. Come for the food, stay for the company, and leave with memories that will last a lifetime.
No visit to Wisconsin is complete without experiencing a classic Friday night fish fry.
This beloved Wisconsin tradition brings locals and visitors together for a meal that’s as much about community as it is about crispy, golden deliciousness. Ask a local and they’re sure to provide you a list of their favorite spots in town. The tradition of fish fries began with the state’s Catholic communities, who wanted a meatless option on Fridays. Friday fish fries also became a reliable dish for many Wisconsin restaurants during the prohibition era.
With easy access to freshwater fish and strong German, Polish, and Scandinavian influences, fish fries became a regular part of
life for Wisconsinites throughout the generations — and they still are today. What began as a tradition during lent, has now become a staple weekly meal for Wisconsinites year-round. You’ll find beer-battered or breaded cod, perch, or walleye, along with coleslaw and a potato dish, typically fries or potato pancakes. A traditional fish fry can be found at many restaurants in the Plover Area. Pair this tradition with another Wisconsin favorite: a craft brew or an Old Fashioned! Whether you’re with family, friends, or on your own, a fish fry is a great way to get a feel for Wisconsin.

• Club Forest
• Grazin’ Angus
• Paradise Bar & Grill

Traveling with your furry friend doesn’t mean missing out on local dining. In the Plover area, several restaurants and breweries make it easy to bring your pup along while you enjoy a meal or drink during patio season. Whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch, meeting friends for dinner, or trying out local brews, there are plenty of patio options where dogs are welcome.
Some of the patios do require ordering inside without your pup. So, you’ll either need someone
else with you or to make temporary arrangements while you order. This guide will help you plan how to have your pup join you in the Plover Area!
Unfortunately, with Wisconsin’s winters being pretty cold, most of the dog-friendly dining options in the Plover Area are only available seasonally.
Patio season usually runs June through October, but could begin earlier if there is consistently nice weather with an early spring.
