Message from your Professional Learning Officer

"Welcome to our June Edition,

We hope the June cataolgue finds you well and eager to learn because we have some amazing professional development opportunities coming your way this June! If you're looking to take your leadership skills to the next level, then look no further than our new offerings. Last month it was a pleasure to be invited to attend several Conferences including Connect Ed in the Hunter Valley with over 500 middle leaders attending Day 1 as well as over 160 Principals attending. It was great to connect with Principals and middle leaders to listen to the Professional Learning requirements that they need. I was also fortunate to be invited to attend the Penrith Blue Mountains Conference and listen to some fantastic speakers. It is also important to connect and hear from the membership on the Professional Learning they are planning and importantly need in their context. This month, I will be attending the North Coast Conference to run workshops of our Professional learning suite. If you could like me to attend or support the Professional Learning with our suite of options for your PPC reach out and lets make it happen. We have started the first of the Your Time Matters free webinars that will help you manage your time more effectively and increase your productivity. The first one, Using Microsoft Outlook Overview with Priority Management, was well attended, we had well over 150 participants join this session on Tuesday 30 May 2023 from 7:30 am-8:30am. The second webinar, Using Microsoft Teams Overview with Priority Management, will be held on Wednesday 14 June 2023 from 7:30 am-8:30 am., it is not too late to register.

WHAT PRINCIPALS AND SCHOOL LEADERS ARE SAYING… Tough Conversations provides insight into what makes the conversations so tough; how to prepare, manage and prosper through those conversations; and then come away feeling energised with an issue resolved and/or a meaningful plan in place. People report feeling much better within themselves when they have this training to draw on; which also means that they don’t feel like they are personally in a firing line anymore! Everyone benefits. MALCOLM ELLIOT, PRESIDENT APPA

Leading at the Speed of Trust

Trust is Vital for High-Performing Teams Water is the vital substance that sustains all life on this planet. When it’s there, everything flourishes and grows. When it’s not there, everything withers and dies. The same is true for trust. Where there is no trust, relationships decay, projects fail, customers go to competitors, initiatives under-perform, and work grinds to a crawl.

Get Results and Inspire Trust Like a ripple in a pond, trust begins with you. Leaders who attend the highly interactive Leading at the Speed of Trust 3.0 work session will increase their personal credibility and practice specific behaviors to increase trust. As a result, they will be able to better manage change and lead high-performing teams that are agile, collaborative, innovative, and engaged

TRUST TAX TRUST

Instead of just attending a Leading at the Speed of Trust 3.0 work session, leaders learn to apply and sustain a new language and set of behaviors to real work. The Middle Leadership Imperative @ Maitland Gaol A four-day professional learning opportunity for Assistant Principals addressing the three key themes of middle leading, collaborative professionalism and ideas in action. Who will benefit Principals and school executive Program Overview The middle leader has become increasingly more important to the work of schools through increased accountability and responsibility of principals (Dinham 2016). The role of the middle leader is evolving with specific purpose in facilitating collegial professional learning and in the development of quality student learning (Ronnerman 2014). However, ambiguity still exists in relation to what middle leaders are expected to do (Fluckiger et al 2005). Participation in this course will empower middle leaders through a practical understanding of the environmental and personal inputs into middle leadership, the key roles middle leaders play and the potential outputs in relation to teachers and students. This course will address an extensive review of available research on middle leadership leading to an effective undertaking of the middle leadership role in NSW schools through the recognition that middle leadership is teacher driven, site responsive and encompasses team based professional learning COURSE COMPONENETS MIDDLE LEADING This module will examine the role of the middle leader within the leadership structure of schools; leadership and management as a set of abilities and skills; as well as the impact of school context on the middle leadership role. COLLABORATIVE PROFESSIONALISM This module will centre on collaboration and building social capital among teachers and other educators to improve student learning. Middle leaders will be supported in how to collaborate more deeply in ways that achieve greater impact covering topics: Leading a team by bringing people on the journey with you; Communicating effectively including difficult conversations; Importance of trust; and Feedback IDEAS IN ACTION This module will focus on site based educational development through the lens of middle leadership. This includes a survey, a 10-day diary study and a one-on-one interview to assess the individ-ual’s over- all wellbeing, as well as give them a clearer snapshot of their work and personal lives, where their time goes and how this affects them in their role as a school leader. While there are a number of surveys out there showing how poor the well- being of school leaders is, the addition of the diary study and interview gives individuals greater clarity around the habits that are diminishing their wellbeing. It also increases their readiness for change. Finally, this allows us to have a better understanding of each cohort and its needs, which will inform the facilitator to tailor the content of the workshops to the specific needs of that group.

Phase 2 - Intervention Education – 4 full day workshops, one per term. Educators gain knowledge on the latest psychological research, learn and develop strategies and techniques in relation to working as a School Leader, and develop action plans that allow them to clarify and identify their individual drivers for change. Behaviour change strategies – These are a series of initiatives that will facilitate behaviour change and make it easier for the information presented in the sessions to be implemented. Collegiate support – By attending these sessions together, School Leaders will be provided with the opportunity to connect and collaborate with their peers, which will then enable them to create and improve their professional network. By sharing experiences and opinions through group discussion, they will broaden their knowledge and capabilities and, therefore, improve their professional practice and performance.

Phase 3 - Re-testing We measure the impact of the program by asking the particpants to redo the baseline survey.

LIZ WISEMAN’S

What’s holding your team back from better results?

Under pressure to deliver results in good times and bad, leaders face a variety of challenges: •We can’t hire, but we need to grow. •We need everyone’s best, but people are burned out. •We’re okay today, but we’re not ready to compete tomorrow. •We have the best talent, but they’re not engaged. In these circumstances, leaders can’t afford to waste talent. They need people to innovate, to solve problems, to deliver results—and to be excited and engaged as they do so.

Introducing Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Ignite Everyone’s Intelligence In her research, leadership expert Liz Wiseman made a crucial discovery: There’s far more intelligence and energy inside organizations than we realize. Leaders are key to unlocking these capabilities. FranklinCovey has partnered with Liz Wiseman to develop a new solution that enables leaders to become Multipliers who: •Access and use the untapped capabilities on their teams. •Rekindle energy and enthusiasm as teams achieve stronger results. •Innovate by encouraging new and bold thinking. •Break through to new levels of performance by amplifying people’s intelligence. Multipliers deliver stronger results as people grow and teams excel. MEET THE 4 ESSENTIAL ROLES OF LEADERSHIP Even in the most turbulent times, there are four roles leaders play that are highly predictive of success. Reflective Practice for School Leaders Scholarship Opportunity for NSWPPA Members Reflective Practice for School Leaders Scholarship Opportunity for NSWPPA Members Background School leaders experience, daily, the complex and frequent demands on their time, energy, and wisdom. Recent studies report school leaders are facing unprecedented pressure on their mental health and wellbeing (DE Mattews and colleagues, 2021). Mentoring ("how to survive"), coaching ("how to perform") and managerial oversight ("how to comply") have and do contribute to the effective leadership of schools, but the challenges for school leaders and their own professional development and support remain urgent and unaddressed. The role of the principal in fostering educational achievement is critical and Australian schools are facing a principal recruitment and retention crisis (Heffernan & Pierpoint, 2022). To meet the challenge of the wellbeing crisis in school leadership we will require effective and qualified facilitators to enhance the reflective practice of school leaders (aka Professional Supervisors). A pilot training program (Grad cert/ level 8) with educators and school leaders conducted in 2022, indicated that reflective supervision approaches, adapted for the education sector, could be effective for school leaders. The Sydney School of Education and Social Work at The University of Sydney is providing a course for professional supervisors through the Centre for Educational Leadership to support development of these qualifications in the education sector. About reflective practice summary Reflective practice provides quarantined time for leaders to work 1 on 1 (or, in small groups of 6-8) with qualified reflective practice professionals on issues which emerge in their practice. The agency of the school leader is paramount in these conversations: from the choice of what is reflected upon, to the practitioner always remaining the expert in their practice domain, not the facilitator (contra coaching, and mentoring). The evidence-based process works to support school leaders by enabling reflection on professional practice that is: • Restorative and supportive • Formative and educative • Normative and ethical/ values-based ('Guiding Star' orientation) Qualifications for Reflective (Professional) Supervisors A course could be offered by The University of Sydney to train professional supervisors for education. The course would be: - Equivalent to 12 Credits Points (2 Masters level units) - Include up to 12000 words (or equivalent) of assessment - Delivered through 3-4 intensive face-to-face two-day workshops per course, with zoom sessions

Reflective Practice for School Leaders Scholarship Opportunity for NSWPPA Members Reflective Practice for School Leaders Scholarship Opportunity for NSWPPA Members In between, in addition to the coursework: - Each participant undertakes 8 self-funded supervision sessions - Each participant delivers 10 supervision sessions The program would cover the following: • Reflective Practice in Educational settings • Establish and manage the supervision (school leader/supervisor relationship) • Provide professional supervision • Deliver structured programs • Provide workplace mentoring. Accreditation Accreditation would be available through the Australasian Association of Supervision Scholarship - An offering from the NSWPPA (NSW Primary Principals Association) Scholarship Costs The course would cost approximately $6600 (including GST) per participant which will cover the course tuition fees of the scholarship. The successful scholarship recipient will be responsible for all other associated costs including relief as well as accommodation. Reflective Practice for School Leaders Scholarship Opportunity for NSWPPA Members Reflective Practice for School Leaders Scholarship Opportunity for NSWPPA Members Is this approach new? No. Psychologists and social workers have been involved in a process called Professional Supervision for several decades. This approach is based on theevidence and practicebase of that approach. FrequentlyAsked Questions How is this differentto counselling? The Reflectors are not (for the most part) clinically trained, and they are not ableto support issues that are best supported by counselling psychologists. Reflective Practice aims to support school leaders by providing frameworks and approaches to respond to each school leaders specific challenges. How is this different to coaching? In Reflective Practice the focus is not somuch on advice giving but on developing strong reflective capacities so that school leaders may be able to thinkthrough their challenges with the benefit of a supportive colleague. What is the evidence for the effectiveness of this approach? There is strong evidencefor the effectiveness of the processes this approach is based on, Professional Supervision. This review by Newcastle University in the UK provides a metaanalysis of the available evidence. The following finding is especially pertinent:" "It seems that benefits [from professional supervision] are evident for the individual, from reduction in stress and anxiety to improvement in job satisfaction. Effective supervision also benefited the team by creating a more supportive work environment, which in turn has led to improved patient care. There was also some evidence on the damaging effects for the individual when there is no or poor supervision in place (Rothwell, 2019).
