Clarity Learning Suite: Many schools have already signed up for the Clarity Learning Suite, a comprehensive resource to improve teaching and learning outcomes. Explore the benefits of this suite at https://www.nswppa.org.au/clarity-learning-suite The Middle Leadership Imperative in 2024 https://www.nswppa.org.au/the-middle-leadership-imperative This course was developed by the Leadership Standing Committee to support our Middle school leaders. The review are amazing! The middle leader has become increasingly more important to the work of schools through increased accountability and responsibility of principals (Dinham 2016). The role of the middle leader is evolving with specific purpose in facilitating collegial professional learning and in the development of quality student learning (Ronnerman 2014). However, ambiguity still exists in relation to what middle leaders are expected to do (Fluckiger et al 2005). Reach out if you would like our presenters to come to your Networks. We had 97 participants in 2023. Warm regards, Drew Janetzki If youLearning are attending Professional Officer any NSW PPA Professional Learning in 2023 don't forget to share via Twitter NSW Primary Principals Association @nswppa. #support #advocate #lead #empower

THE RESEARCH AND THE SOLUTION FranklinCovey spent more than two years learning what organizations and businesses need from their leaders today and in the future. We discovered that these organizations and businesses needed leaders who could:
• Think BIG and adapt quickly. • Translate strategy into meaningful work. • Coach people to a higher performance. The 4 Essential Roles develop leaders who can master these skills consistently, within FranklinCovey’s unique framework that focuses on developing who a leader is as well as what a leader does.

Inspire Trust
Trust starts with a leader’s own character and competence—the credibility that allows leaders to intentionally build a culture of trust.
Create Vision Execute Strategy Coach Potential
Effective leaders create a shared vision and strategy, and communicate it so powerfully that others join them on the journey. Leaders must not only think big, but also execute their vision and strategy all the way through to completion, with and through others. Effective leaders develop the leadership potential in others and improve performance through consistent feedback and coaching.

Art of Leadership 2024 THE NSWPPA’S SIGNATURE PROGRAM: DESIGNED BY SCHOOL LEADERS WITH SCHOOL LEADERS IN MIND. THIS IS A PRACTICAL, SKILL-BASED AND EXPERIENTIAL PROGRAM DESIGNED TO DRAW ON POWERFUL RESEARCH. The Art of Leadership is structured upon a leadership effectiveness framework that identifies and builds the capabilities that both school experience and relevant research show to be essential to successful leadership. Leadership of self The framework assumes that self-leadership is the starting point of all leadership. If we are not leading and managing ourselves with maximum effectiveness, then we will find it difficult to be effective leaders of others. Leadership of others The second dimension of leadership is the leadership behaviour that influences and engages others. The leader’s ability to influence the effectiveness of others, and the behaviours they use to gain that influence, are pivotal. Leadership of teams The third dimension of leadership is the capability required to create, build and sustain teams. This requires the leader to develop a compelling purpose and thoughtful processes to create groups that can work together with synergy and collaboration. Leadership of organisations and systems The fourth dimension of leadership is contextual. In order to be strategic and systematic, leaders must be able to recognise and act upon the patterns and complexities that arise in their work situations. Each of these 4 dimensions is explored through activity, discussion and challenge. A significant time is spent on the practice of related skills. Program delivery This is a 6-day program designed for principals and school executive. The program is delivered in two 3-day phases, with a workplace learning element between the two phases. The program is delivered in a range of venues, both rural and metropolitan venues across New South Wales.

The Masterclass is a 3 day program. A vibrant Leadership for Complex Communities’ will be a 25-hour Masterclass (3 days for a maximum of 24 participants.) As preparation, a commitment to 3 hours of pre-program reading and reflection activities will be required. Included in the MasterClass will be: A deeper exploration of the psychology of internal control; A more rigorous examination of the implications of internal control psychology for educational leaders; A ‘Case Studies’ approach to extending the coaching and managing conversation skills of leaders. (Participants will be expected to bring several ‘case studies’ of coaching or managing conversations that they have found challenging) Some explorations in the management of complexity. Conversations about the nature and value of ‘authenticity’ in leadership; An exploration of the dimensions of leadership resilience; An examination of the cultural, strategic and change-management practices required to build a ‘culture of collaborative professionalism’ in a school; An exploration of the practice of autonomy-supportive leadership through the research and writing of Peter F. Drucker and Edward L. Deci. The skills and strategic practices required of this approach to encouraging generative teacher learning and professional growth will be compared and contrasted to a more commonplace ‘measurement and accountability’ approach. Leading at the Speed of Trust
Trust is Vital for High-Performing Teams Water is the vital substance that sustains all life on this planet. When it’s there, everything flourishes and grows. When it’s not there, everything withers and dies. The same is true for trust. Where there is no trust, relationships decay, projects fail, customers go to competitors, initiatives under-perform, and work grinds to a crawl.
Get Results and Inspire Trust Like a ripple in a pond, trust begins with you. Leaders who attend the highly interactive Leading at the Speed of Trust 3.0 work session will increase their personal credibility and practice specific behaviors to increase trust. As a result, they will be able to better manage change and lead high-performing teams that are agile, collaborative, innovative, and engaged
TRUST TAX TRUST
Instead of just attending a Leading at the Speed of Trust 3.0 work session, leaders learn to apply and sustain a new language and set of behaviors to real work. They TRUST learn about powerful tools and processes to sustain learning for fifty-two weeks following the work session, helping leaders engage their teams in a completely different way to be more committed and accountable to results.

Helping School Leaders Flourish Not Just Cope
Our Sponsors:
INTRODUCTION AS RESEARCHERS WE SPECIALISE IN NUMBERS, DATA AND ACCURACY. WE DON’T SPECIALISE IN EMOTION. HOWEVER, ‘THE FLOURISH MOVEMENT’ HAS BEEN A VERY EMOTIONAL PROJECT TO WORK ON. THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN EYE OPENING IN TERMS OF WHAT AN EXTRAORDINARY GROUP OF PEOPLE SCHOOL LEADERS ARE. The Flourish Movement has been an altruistic partnership between Dr Adam Fraser, Dr John Molineux from Deakin University and the school principals in NSW (led by Bob Willetts). This program has been designed with principals, for principals. The collaborative nature of the program is one of the reasons why it has been so incredibly successful. A surprising finding of our research is how the school leaders cope with such a difficult job. What school leaders have in common is they have a suit of armour that they pull on each day to go to work. The armour consists of two parts: • Their incredibly high level of Psychological capital. Psychological capital consists of Confidence, Hope, Resilience and Optimism. It is a tool kit they draw on to deal with high levels of pressure and stress. • The second is the high level of meaning and purpose they have attached to the role. For them this job is a true vocation, it is bigger than themselves. This strong connection to meaning and purpose spurs them on to tolerate the difficult parts of the job. While this armour protects them, it is a heavy burden to carry. The maintenance of the armour requires them to push themselves constantly, to overwork, to over commit and to feel guilty about taking time for themselves or their family. The guilt that school leaders feel when they are not able to be everything to everybody is palpable. You could say in some ways school leaders are too devoted, too resilient and too optimistic for their own good. We need to protect them, not because they are weak, but because they are too strong. Wearing the armour comes at a cost. The most significant is the impact on their personal lives. They lack work family balance and the stress of the day comes home with them. It also has a huge impact on their health, with many suffering significant health issues that can be related to stress. Finally, their passion for the job is being eroded. The high levels of reporting and compliance take them further from the joy of focusing on education and making the school a better place to work and attend. The Flourish Movement is a place where they can take off the armour, sit with their colleagues, be supported and have authentic and real conversations. Whilst this sounds like a sad tale it has a happy ending. Just like the school leaders themselves, we have hope and optimism for their future. The greatest things we have learnt from the Flourish Movement is that school leaders are incredibly adaptable and have an amazing capacity to change their behaviour to improve their wellbeing, how efficient they are at work, their ability to deal with negative thoughts and emotions and their capacity to clearly articulate what they want to stand for as a leader. Given support and guidance, they have the capacity to dramatically evolve the way they work to make the job more sustainable, enjoyable and more impactful. Dr Adam Fraser
THE FLOURISH MOVEMENT THE FLOURISH MOVEMENT SPECIALISES IN IMPROVING THE WELLBEING AND EFFECTIVENESS OF SCHOOL LEADERS AND THEIR STAFF. IT IS A MOVEMENT THAT WAS STARTED BY EDUCATORS, CO-DESIGNED WITH EDUCATORS AND DRIVEN BY OUR PASSION TO SUPPORT AN AMAZING GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO DO A VITALLY IMPORTANT JOB.
KEY FEATURES Designed by and for School Leaders
Research Based
Individualisation/Customisation
This movement was started when Bob Willetts an inspiring and proactive principal from Ber- ry Public School, engaged Dr Adam Fraser to use his research and IP to build The Flour- ish Movement. Bob and the principals from South Coast of NSW helped fine tune the program to suit the needs of educators every- where. Due to its customised nature Flourish has achieved amazing results.
The Flourish Movement is built on research and science. It has generated one of the most comprehensive and detailed data sets on school leader wellbeing anywhere in the world. Our research approach involves surveys, 10- day diary studies and interviews conducted by our research partner Dr John Molineux (Se- nior lecturer Deakin University).
One of the greatest features of the Flourish Movement is that each group participates in the research. This not only gives them amaz- ing insights in their wellbeing, engagement and behaviours. It also allows us to customised the program for each group participating in it.

PHASES OF THE PROGRAM
Phase 1 - Research We partner with Deakin Business School to understand the world of school leaders. At the start of The Flourish Movement program, the participants go through a thorough research process. This includes a survey, a 10-day diary study and a one-on-one interview to assess the individual’s overall wellbeing, as well as give them a clearer snapshot of their work and personal lives, where their time goes and how this affects them in their role as a school leader. While there are a number of surveys out there showing how poor the wellbeing of school leaders is, the addition of the diary study and interview gives individuals greater clarity around the habits that are diminishing their wellbeing. It also increases their readiness for change. Finally, this allows us to have a better understanding of each cohort and its needs, which will inform the facilitator to tailor the content of the workshops to the specific needs of that group.
Phase 2 - Intervention Education – 4 full day workshops, one per term. Educators gain knowledge on the latest psychological research, learn and develop strategies and techniques in relation to working as a School Leader, and develop action plans that allow them to clarify and identify their individual drivers for change. Behaviour change strategies – These are a series of initiatives that will facilitate behaviour change and make it easier for the information presented in the sessions to be implemented. Collegiate support – By attending these sessions together, School Leaders will be provided with the opportunity to connect and collaborate with their peers, which will then enable them to create and improve their professional network. By sharing experiences and opinions through group discussion, they will broaden their knowledge and capabilities and, therefore, improve their professional practice and performance.
Phase 3 - Re-testing We measure the impact of the program by asking the participants to redo the baseline survey.

COST AND RETURN ON INVESTMENT Cost: The program costs $3450 + GST per participant and it includes: •4 workshops; •Research portion of the program done by researchers from Deakin University, including a one-on-one interview; •Printed handouts; •Supporting materials; •In-between workshops’ communications with articles, videos, etc.
Return on investment: While the results and feedback are amazing, we understand that wellbeing can be hard to put a price on let alone to view as an investment. We encountered this when school leaders themselves had to look at the cost of the program and take it out of their school’s budget and say, ‘I am worth it and so is my school’. Our research was designed so we could review the effectiveness of our program and demonstrate that there was substantial improvement for the leaders. After seeing the results, we engaged an ex- ternal actuary to review the return on investment of Flourish. The actuary has been conservative in their assessment as they only used improvements in productivity from increased effectiveness, and reductions in productivity losses due to absenteeism and presenteeism (turnover, medical/disability and employee savings are not included); and made the calculations based on one year. The ROI demonstrated was a cost benefit ratio of 1/2.99 – essentially 299%. So, any school leader who has invested in themselves and their school not only made the cost of the program back, but another 199% in the first year in savings due to the previously mentioned improvements.

2024-2025 Program The Anxiety Project 2024- 2025 Expression of Interest. The NSW Primary Principals’ Association is calling for expressions of interest from NSW public schools with K – 6 enrolments to be part of an evidence-based school community program to raise skills within the school and with parents to address the impact of childhood anxiety on school engagement and learning.
Well-respected psychologist, author and former teacher, Michael Hawton, has partnered with the NSWPPA to tailor a professional learning program to implement classroom strategies for managing anxiety and building resilience in the classroom. Parent training is also a component of the program. Introduced at the NSWPPA 2021 Term 2 State Council, the project proposal was well-received by principal-delegates who recognised that most of the five themes of the High Impact Professional Learning Policy and the eight themes of What Works Best 2020 were embedded into the project design, including a research component, instructional leader support, parent engagement and the establishment of a professional learning community.
Schools will be provided specialist training for Implementation Coaches and ongoing support to implement the program in your school. Including: • lesson plans for teachers,
• • training for all school staff, • parent and school resources to inform and encourage your school community, support a cultural change in your school, • ongoing implementation support to ensure continuity, • access to a network of schools in the program.

The Middle Leadership Imperative
Has your network invested into your Middle Leaders? A four-day professional learning opportunity for Assistant Principals addressing the three key themes of middle leading, collaborative professionalism and ideas in action. Who will benefit Principals and school executive Program Overview The middle leader has become increasingly more important to the work of schools through increased accountability and responsibility of principals (Dinham 2016). The role of the middle leader is evolving with specific purpose in facilitating collegial professional learning and in the development of quality student learning (Ronnerman 2014). However, ambiguity still exists in relation to what middle leaders are expected to do (Fluckiger et al 2005). Participation in this course will empower middle leaders through a practical understanding of the environmental and personal inputs into middle leadership, the key roles middle leaders play and the potential outputs in relation to teachers and students. This course will address an extensive review of available research on middle leadership leading to an effective undertaking of the middle leadership role in NSW schools through the recognition that middle leadership is teacher driven, site responsive and encompasses team based professional learning COURSE COMPONENETS MIDDLE LEADING This module will examine the role of the middle leader within the leadership structure of schools; leadership and management as a set of abilities and skills; as well as the impact of school context on the middle leadership role. Leadership qualities and character strengths will be viewed in line with a developing theoretical model of middle leadership (De Noble 2018). COLLABORATIVE PROFESSIONALISM This module will centre on collaboration and building social capital among teachers and other educators to improve student learning. Middle leaders will be supported in how to collaborate more deeply in ways that achieve greater impact covering topics: Leading a team by bringing people on the journey with you; Communicating effectively including difficult conversations; Importance of trust; and Feedback IDEAS IN ACTION This module will focus on site based educational development through the lens of middle leadership. Participants will be guided through the praxis of site based middle leadership with a rigorous focus on leading teaching and learning to enhance: Student learning outcomes; Effective and sustainable teacher learning; Pedagogical development; and, Curriculum and assessment practice.
