14 – Babysitting Basics Help your child be a great babysitter by expanding their skills and confidence to provide safe and responsible care when asked to babysit. Designed for students in fifth grade and above, this course teaches basic first aid, caring for infants and young children, meal preparation, and child development.

Upon completion of the course, your child will receive a Babysitting Basics Certificate. Cost of the program includes lunch as well as some babysitting essential items. This class is for both boys and girls.

22 – Landscaping for a More Sustainable Backyard Before making spring landscaping plans, come attend an informational session about sustainable landscaping practices to use in your own backyard.

Jennifer Welch from Polk Soil and Water Conservation District will discuss how to incorporate Best Management Practices (BMPs) to landscape your home. Topics will include native plantings, rainwater harvesting, and ways to improve turf grass areas and increase habitats of pollinators. The City of Pleasant Hill’s Storm Water Coordinator, Chris Widmer will provide information about the City’s current storm water management program, the storm water utility, and updates to the

24 – Spring Building Bricks 4 Kidz Do you love building with LEGO bricks? Come join us for two hours of building activities that include Easter and Spring themed projects. Build an egg spinner or spin art machine for fun holiday crafts. With thousands of LEGO bricks your builder can create mosaics, 3D builds and motorized Technic models. 5 – Tree Pruning and Maintenance This free workshop is open to anyone eager to learn how to care for young trees (less than 20 feet tall). Parks and

Recreation Supervisor, Heath Ellis, a certified Arborist, will provide a brief training on proper pruning techniques and tools. Following the training program if the weather permits, participants may venture outside to practice pruning on real trees.

7 – Springtime Hill Climb The Springtime Hill Climb allows participants to choose between a 5k run/walk or a 10k run that will take you through the streets and trails of Pleasant Hill. Don’t be intimidated by the name – it’s primarily named the Hill Climb because of the location, not the elevation. 19 – Tree Selection, Placement, and Planting Properly placed trees can reduce energy costs and provide many environmental and community benefits. The focus of this program will be on practical landscape planning and design solutions for shade tree selection and placement. This program is sponsored by The Elk’s Beacon Grant and the City of Pleasant Hill.

20 – Earth Day Trash Bash The Earth Day Trash Bash is a collaborative effort between the Des Moines Parks & Recreation and several surrounding communities. Pleasant Hill Parks and Recreation needs your help in cleaning up along the Gay Lea Wilson Trail and mulching new trees. Join City Staff as they present information on the tools they use to promote sustainability, preserve environmental features in local projects, and take part in regional efforts to increase green space, accessibility, and storm water retention. Staff will be joined by John Swanson, Watershed Management Authority (WMA) Coordinator from Polk SWCD to discuss how WMAs are involved in rural and urban water conservation for the entire region.

12 – Let’s Salsa - Grow Your Own Salsa Grab your tortilla chips and grow a salsa garden! Pleasant Hill HyVee will be offering two salsa classes! You will learn about the best plants you need to grow your own salsa garden, how to care for your plants, and when to harvest. Then at the end of the Summer learn how to prepare salsa with the Making Salsa class!

16 – Bike Month PreK Art Celebrate Bike Month with the Pleasant Hill Public Library and Parks and Recreation. Children between the ages of 2-6 are invited to experience bicycle safety education. Participants will learn age appropriate safety skills to navigate the do’s and don’ts of riding a bicycle.

Throughout the class children will create a collaborative project relating to bicycles.

We encourage participants to bring their bicycles to enjoy the skills course that will be set up in the west parking lot of the library to practice the safety skills learned in the class. Helmets will be required and parent participation is recommended. Yoga is a gentle form of exercise that is for EVERYONE. There is an infinite need to strengthen both our mind and bodies! 23 – Preserve the Taste of Summer Home Food Preserver Iowa State University Extension Nutrition and Health program specialists are eager to announce a new food preservation program, Preserve the Taste of Summer. It is a comprehensive program comprised of both online lessons and handson workshops. Preserve the Taste of Summer is a great opportunity for anyone age 18 years or older interested in learning safe food preservation techniques.

JULY 9 – Youth Yoga Kids are busier than ever and crave a slow down just as much as adults do.

Yoga is a gentle form of exercise that is for EVERYONE. There is an infinite need to strengthen both our mind and bodies! During our 60 minutes we will calm our mind by breathing and strengthening our bodies through movement. We will work through opening, standing, balance, and seated poses. The last 5-10 minutes is guided relaxation. Children will learn how to use techniques to practice at home.

BEST GROUP (BRINGING EDUCATION AND SENIORS TOGETHER) B.E.S.T. is targeted to people age 55 and up. We plan a day trip once a month to local sights. Our day trips are generally on one Thursday of each month from April through September.

A Holiday Potluck is held in November of each year at the Doanes Park Youth Center on the Friday before Thanksgiving. BEST participant or not, all are welcome!

Compost It! Season begins April 4th!

Yard waste bags and bundles are collected from the curb weekly during Compost It! season. There are three options to use the Bags & Stickers: Stickers can be purchased at City Hall or the Pleasant Hill Hy-Vee. Dog and Cat Licenses: All dogs and cats within the City must be registered at Pleasant Hill City Hall. A current copy of the pet’s rabies vaccination certificate is required and may be obtained from your veterinarian.

1. Purchase Compost It! Bags • Cost: $8.00+tax for a bundle of five bags.

• No sticker required.

• The cost of the Compost It! bag covers the cost of collection.

• Tip: Do not exceed 40 lbs. of weight per bag.

• All furnishings (bench/picnic table/trash can pergola/shelter) will be uniform - to conform to the style of furnishings installed at the site already or of a standard style as determined by a site design plan or standard set by the City.

• Gifts are accepted with the full understanding that they become the property of the City of Pleasant Hill.

Only bench, picnic table, trash cans, pergolas, shelters, and tree/planting donations are covered by this policy. A donor requesting any other type of donation must apply separately to the Parks and Recreation Commission. Depending on the nature of the donation, it may be referred to the Pleasant Hill City Council.

Youth Center Residents interested in reserving the Youth Center must stop

FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions What is your cancellation policy?

Programs, activities and special events that are cancelled, postponed or changed in location will be announced as soon as possible. Please check Facebook or www.pleasanthilliowa.org for updates. We reserve the right to cancel a program or an activity that does not meet the minimum number if participants necessary to offer the program.

What is your program refund policy?

Refund requests must be made ONE WEEK prior to the first day of the program. Once the ONE WEEK deadline passes, refunds will not be issued. If the program is cancelled due to not meeting the minimum number of participants or due to weather a full refund will be given.

What is your facility rental refund policy?

The city does not honor refunds for cancellations for use of the shelters or youth center due to inclement weather. Cancellations must be made 30 days prior to the reserved date in order to receive a refund; less a $10 cancellation fee for shelters and a $50 cancellation fee for the Youth Center. There are no guarantees or refunds regarding the facility’s suitability to the event, including but is not limited to; parking, appliances, heating or cooling, electrical (such as access to power and/or blown circuit breakers) and water supply. Appeals for refund may be made to the Park & Recreation Commission.

Baseball Field Rentals Refunds are given only when fields are unplayable due to inclement weather, unsuitable field conditions due to rain, or any other maintenance related issue. The deadline to requesting a refund is ONE WEEK prior to use of the field. Refunds will not be given when teams choose not to play for reasons other than those stated above.

Photos/videos taken of participants and guests in programs, activities or special events may be used in promotional materials, press releases and the City of Pleasant Hill’s website and social media channels.

PROGRAMS Children

Three story times and a craft time are held each week as well as many special events throughout the year.

Scavenger Hunts are held on a continuing basis within the library. These are very popular with our younger patrons!

The Summer Reading Program is available for all ages and provides great opportunities for growth. Last year there were over 800 participants.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is designed to encourage parents to read 1,000 books to children before they start school. This program helps children get a jump start on literacy. Sign up and let us know your progress.

Close to 200 children are already participating!

Ticket to Read is for older children. Participants read from different genres to get their passports stamped. When completed, children get to select a book to take home.

Adult Programs

The Summer Reading Program is available to adults as well! A drawing is held at the end of the program for a grand prize.

The Book Discussion Group meets every month to discuss a different book. It’s always a lively discussion!

Our BEST group (Bringing Education and Seniors Together) gives senior citizens the chance to sign up for chartered bus trips to locations throughout Iowa.

Adult Education programs on a variety of subjects are offered at the library. Many programs are provided by the Adult Education department of the Des Moines Public Schools.

Vacation House Watch Program

The Pleasant Hill Police Department offers a residential Vacation House Watch Program for Pleasant Hill residents.

The Vacation House Watch Program allows residents to sign up to have the police department check on their residence while on vacation or anytime they are away from their home for an extended period of time.

How It Works During your absence, the police department will attempt to drive by your residence one or more times a day and visually check the outside perimeter of your home to confirm that everything appears to be safe and secure*.

The Police Department encourages you to follow additional steps before you depart and utilize the Vacation House Watch program as an added layer of protection to help provide you with some peace of mind while you’re away.

Additional Steps to secure your home before vacation: HOLD YOUR MAIL Overstuffed mailboxes tip burglars off to an empty house.

Contact your local post office up to 30 days in advance to notify them you would like your mail to be held for the duration of your trip.

KEEP YOUR LAWN TIDY If you are going to be away from your home for an extended period, your overgrown lawn might signal no one is home. Consider hiring a landscaper or neighbor to mow the grass and trim some of the shrubberies to maintain the illusion that someone is around to take care of the lawn.

KEEP YOUR DRIVEWAY OCCUPIED Fake out potential burglars by keeping your driveway occupied. Ask a neighbor to park their car in your driveway from time to time.

DO NOT LEAVE SPARES OUTSIDE As a homeowner, you should never leave keys outside, no matter how good you think they are hidden. Your keys could be found, which makes your home vulnerable to 26

burglaries. Rather, leave your keys in the hands of a trusted neighbor.

EMERGENCY CONTACT Set-up a temporary emergency contact number. This could mean buying a pay-per-minute plan and phone while you are away or ask a friend or family member that you trust to be your emergency contact. Give them the information and access they need to be able to make or carry out decisions on your behalf should anything ever happen. You can leave a spare key with them and even set up a temporary access code on your home security system.

NOTIFY YOUR BANK If you plan on using your ATM or credit card while on vacation, inform your bank of the destinations you will be visiting. By doing so, the bank will not flag unusual spending activity in these various locations. You also need to inform your home security company of the duration of your trip so they know who to contact in the case of an emergency.

PROTECT IDENTITY ON YOUR LUGGAGE Never write your address on your luggage in case its contents contain any sensitive information that could lead criminals to target you. Instead, write the phone number of your emergency contact and/or home phone.

CANCEL DELIVERIES AND NEWSPAPERS A cluttered doorstop does not look any better than an overflowing mailbox. If you have orders that have not come in yet, cancel them or ask a friend to pick them up for you. If you have a regular subscription that comes to your door, like newspapers, cancel or put them on hold until you return.

SET LIGHTS ON TIMERS Put your lamps and radios on a timer. Having your lights and radio go on and off throughout the day will deter burglaries.

LIMIT SOCIAL MEDIA SHARING As exciting as your upcoming trip may be, avoid posting your vacation dates and locations.

LOCK AWAY OR HIDE VALUABLES If you have a home safe, use it to hide your valuables and sensitive information. If you do not have a safe, put your valuables out of sight or use a safety deposit box. Posts might reach more people than expected, and you never know how is looking for an empty house to burglarize.

What Requires a Permit?

1. Building Permit - required when any building or structure is erected, constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, improved, converted or demolished.

• All accessory buildings must conform to setback requirements, regardless of size.

• Movable cases, counters and partitions not over 5ft in height.

• Retaining walls with earth surcharge not over 4ft high, measured from top of wall to bottom of footing.

• Painting, papering, wallboard repair and similar finish work.

• Re-roofing, new windows, non-fire doors; ONLY if no structural/size changes are made.

10. Pool Permit - required for construction, installation, alteration, addition or remodeling of a pool exceeding 18 inches in depth.

• All outdoor pools 18 inches or deeper need to be completely surrounded by non-climbable fence.

• Fence must be not less than 54 inches, located at least 4ft from each side of the pool, and have posts no more than 10ft apart.

• All gates and openings to the pool area must be self-closing and self-latching.

11. Street Excavation/Right-of-Way Permit - required to excavate in, or obstruct the free and open passage over a specified City right of way.

• Insurance and penal bond required.

• A street/lane closure notice will need to be submitted and approved when lane or street closures are needed, prior to any closure.

Best Management Practices

Rain gardens, bioretention cells, rain barrels, native plantings, and pervious pavers are all types of structural best management practices (BMPs) that can be used to improve the quality of stormwater runoff by removing pollutants, reducing the flow of storm waters, and reducing the volume of runoff from urban areas. These are also all practices that are currently being used by the City of Pleasant Hill in various locations across the community.

Rain Garden Location: Behind City Hall facing the Building Department Entrance Installed: April 2005 Features: A rain garden is a ground depression allowing water runoff from rain events and snow melt to absorb into the soil instead of in the street to storm drains. The plants that are typically involved include native perennials and grasses designed to store runoff, absorb water, and remove sediment and pollutants.

Benefits: Rain gardens absorb runoff and allow the runoff to percolate through the soil media, this process helps remove the pollutants in the runoff. Slowing runoff alone is a major advantage that rain gardens offer; they also clean the water in the process. The reduced volume of runoff

that makes it way to the creek and stream, results in less flooding and less stream bank erosion.

Bioretention Cell Location: City Hall Parking Lot Installed: April 2005 Features: Bioretention cells are shallow stormwater basins that utilize engineered soils and vegetation to capture and treat runoff. The size of the structures can vary but are typically larger than a rain garden and typically contain a sub drain to transport rain water once it has been filtered. The larger the bioretention cell, the larger the scope of vegetation that can be incorporated into the structure, including some tree species and large shrubs.

Benefits: Bioretention cells utilize the engineered soil media to remove contaminates in runoff water. The soil media is generated by a mixture of sand, compost, and existing soil. The engineered soil provides favorable growing conditions for vegetation and also allows runoff to filter at a quicker rate than standard soil mixes. With a sub drain the bioretention cell can handle larger quantities of runoff at an even quicker rate. The downside of a sub drains is less water absorption into the ground but the runoff leaving the bioretention cell is cleaner than it would have been with no BMP structure in place.

Native Turf Location: Christie Lane Park Installed: August 2015 Features: Native turf is a hardier, deep-rooted grass that looks similar to traditional turf lawns but has the ability to stay green year-round and survive hot, dry, long summers with less need for fertilizer and water.

Native turf’s extensive root systems help form deep, rich soils with high amounts of organic matter content that create ample pore space between soil particles holding a higher volume of moisture for longer periods of time than traditional turf lawns.

Benefits: Native turf is made for the Iowa climate and areas with recurrent seasonal changes. With its deep root system, native turf has the ability to absorb and infiltrated most rainfall acting like a sponge holding water during high flow events while shedding little runoff. This means less watering, fertilizing, and mowing than traditional turf grass reducing the time and money required for regular maintenance.

Lastly, the native turf can survive in locations that receives limited rainfall and tolerates clay and compacted soils

Pervious Pavers Location: Copper Creek Lake Park Installed: June 2013 Features: Pervious paving is an alternative to traditional paving that directs water and whatever it picks up along the way to stormwater intakes on the street. Redirected water, or runoff, gets piped through storm sewer to nearby creeks and streams without treatment. Pervious paving allow water to filter through and absorb into the soil.

Similar products include permeable pavers, porous asphalt, pervious concrete, and grass or gravel pave systems.

Benefits: Roads, parking lots, and driveways account for the majority of impervious surfaces in urban areas. Even a gravel road is considered an impervious surface because it is difficult for water to soak into a packed gravel surface. Pervious paving is a healthy alternative providing the same functionality as traditional paving but with the ability for water to infiltrate directly into the subsurface rock chamber and percolate into an installed sub drain or soils below. The more water absorbing into pavers cuts down on the volume of runoff leaving a site while increasing ground water recharge and water quality.

Best Management Practice Reimbursement Program

The City of Pleasant Hill has budgeted $5,000 for the Best Management Practice (BMP) cost-share program. The goal of this program is to encourage individual landowners to incorporate BMPs on their property to aid in water quality improvements and offset the cost of installation. The City of Pleasant Hill will provide reimbursement for the installation of most BMPs up to 50 percent or $750, whichever is the lesser value and rain barrels up to 50 percent or $75, whichever is the lesser value. Limit one reimbursement for rain barrels per address. Funding is available to applicants on a first come basis and is subject to the approval of the Community Development staff and the director.

COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS Infrastructure Projects

Pleasant Hill Boulevard/Vandalia Road Intersection Improvement Project Project Description: The intersection improvement project will realign the intersection of South Pleasant Hill Boulevard and Vandalia Road and will raise the roadway out of the 500 year floodplain, consolidate two uncontrolled railroad crossings into one signalized crossing, add pedestrian improvements and trail and reconstruct the on-ramp to the Highway 65 bypass. The alignment of the intersection is set to align with the future connection of the Southeast Connector, locally known as Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.

Project Update: The project is undergoing permitting processes and final property acquisition needed for the improvements.

Estimated Cost: The estimated project cost for construction is over $10,000,000. Federal funds have been received to cost share construction in the amount of $7,900,000.

NE 70th Street Reconstruction (including 400’ east of Meacham Dr) Project Description: NE 70th Street between University Avenue and NE Rising Sun Drive will undergo a complete reconstruction to bring the road design to current safety standards. The reconstruction will include an intersection (roundabout) at Ne 70th Street and NE Rising Sun Drive and be designed to eventually continue further south and create a new boulevard section which connects to SE 6th Avenue at SE 68th Street near Four Mile Elementary School.

Project Update: Roadway design is completed which includes the reconstruction of NE 70th Street between University Avenue and Rising Sun Drive as well as a 400’ extension to the east of Meacham Drive.

Estimated Cost: $2,870,000

COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS CONT.

NE 60th Street/Morning Star Court Reconstruction Project Description: A redesigned intersection of NE 60th Street and University Avenue would improve safety and capacity through the intersection as well as add additional car stacking distance by relocating the intersection of NE 60th Street and Morning Star Court to the south. The intersection improvements would also add pedestrian accommodations.

Estimated Cost: $2,720,000

Woodland Drive Construction (Connection from Pleasant Ridge Estates to SE 55th St) Project Description: The Pleasant Ridge Estates neighborhood located on South Shadyview Boulevard currently only has one roadway access. To provide for increased accessibility for emergency services and residents, a new roadway has been designed which would connect from the east side of the subdivision to SE 55th Street named Woodland Drive.

Project Update: The City is currently undergoing negotiations to acquire the necessary right-of-way needed to construct the new roadway.

Estimated Cost: $430,000

Park and Trail Projects

Hickory Glen Park Project Description: The City of Pleasant Hill purchased 77 acres of ground in 2015 southwest of Four Mile Elementary School for future parkland following a recommendation from the Comprehensive Plan and Parks, Trails and Open Space Plan. In 2016, the City hired Confluence Landscape Architects to complete a comprehensive Master Plan for the Park.

Following adoption of the Master Plan, a contest was held to name the park ground by a local resident.

Hickory Glen Park is designed to serve many users over many generations, and full build out is a long term process. The overall Master Plan construction is estimated to cost over $17,000,000.

Project Update: Two contracts have been approved for park design. The initial contract is wrapping up completion and has conducted survey work, permitting, and research. The second contract includes the design of Phase 1 of the park including grading and utility work.

Estimated Cost: Phase one will be refined following the completion of design and estimated to be around $2,000,000.

Youngstown Trail Project Description: Youngstown trail is a local trail network which provides a connection for residents to travel throughout the community and connect to over 600 miles of trails through the Central Iowa Trail network via the Gay Lea Wilson Trail.

Project Update: Phase II of Youngstown Trail which extends from the Gay Lea Wilson Trail at Parkridge Avenue and continues east to Pleasant Hill Boulevard has completed design which includes the trail and several storm water improvements.

The City is currently undergoing the necessary property and easement acquisition needed to construct the project.

Estimated Cost: $777,000

Regional Projects

Southeast Connector/Martin Luther King Jr Parkway Extension Project Description: The City of Pleasant Hill has been working with the City of Des Moines to plan, construct, and apply for funding for the Southeast Connector/Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway Extension as a transportation corridor connecting the Highway 5/65 Bypass to downtown Des Moines for over a decade. For more information visit http://www. seconnector.com/index.stm Project Update: The City of Des Moines completed a new section of the roadway to extend to 30th Street in 2016.

The intersection improvements at Pleasant Hill Boulevard and Vandalia Road are designed to accommodate the future connection of the Southeast Connector. Due to federal funding requirements, no additional federal funds can be used to construct the project until at least 2021. Planning is still underway.

Estimated Cost: The connection between 30th Street and the Pleasant Hill Intersection which spans through Des Moines and Pleasant Hill is anticipated to cost $40,000,000.

Water Trails Project Description: The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization received funding from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to develop a regional water trails plan. Now developed, the plan provides the region a road-map for enhancing citizen experiences in and along the waterways in Greater Des Moines.

PUBLIC WORKS Construction Season Construction Season begins April 1st and lasts through the end of October. During this time the Public Works Department will begin street panel replacement. Pothole patching occurs any time the temperature is above freezing. If you see barricades and signs, please be patient as we work to improve our roads.

Animal Control Public Works has a facility where stray animals are kept when recovered. We use a chip reader to see if the pet has a chip. If they do, we contact the owner. If no chip is found, we keep them in our facility for 7 days to try to connect them with their family. After 7 days, the furry friend is transferred to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

Snow and Ice Control Residents are required to remove snow and/or ice from the sidewalks in front of their property within 24 hours after the end of a snow event. Failure to remove the snow within the 24-hour time frame may result in the city removing the snow and/or ice and billing the homeowner for removal.

Parking on all city streets is prohibited during a snow emergency. Snow emergencies are enacted when 2 or more inches of snowfall is forecasted. If a snow emergency is in effect there will be an alert on the City’s website, Facebook, and Twitter accounts.

Oakwood Cemetery Clean up The City of Pleasant Hill will be conducting a general cleanup of Oakwood Cemetery, beginning April 1. All artificial floral arrangements and associated hardware; including arrangements located on the memorial must be 34

removed to allow proper cleanup. Oakwood Cemetery is open from 7:30 a.m. to one-half hour past sunset.

Cleanup dates throughout the year: • April 1 – 15 • June 15 – July 1 • August 1 – 15 • November 1 – 15 Mosquito Spraying Pleasant Hill’s annual mosquito spraying will begin in April.

Depending upon weather conditions, the city truck will be spraying every Tuesday and Thursday evening between 7 to 10:30 p.m. We use an environmentally friendly product that is a “contact” insecticide. Only mosquitoes that come in direct contact with the mist will be killed and the product dissipates from the environment within hours of application. We do not spray if the wind is higher than 10 miles per hour.

Advanced Placement: All five DMPS high schools are ranked among the top 50 in Iowa for offering college-level courses, and Central Academy is a national leader in AP education.

STEM at Southeast Polk At Southeast Polk schools, all students engage in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to identify challenges and design solutions.

We provide opportunities for students to collaborate, communicate, create, and think critically to solve realworld problems. Students participate in hands-on learning opportunities to build the skills they need to be the next generation of innovators.

STEM education starts at the very beginning of a the student’s Southeast Polk experience. All children from Kindergarten through Grade 8 are taught STEM concepts and participate in STEM activities that have been certified by the Iowa STEM Advisory Council.

The emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math continues at Southeast Polk High School where students expand on their early knowledge and skills in a variety of elective courses that can prepare them for higher education and careers in science, technology, agriculture and engineering.

The demand for STEM skills in the workplace continues to grow. According to PLTW research, students engaged in their STEM curriculum outperform their peers in school and are better prepared for postsecondary studies and success in the global economy.

Why is Southeast Polk implementing Project Lead the Way? The Southeast Polk district’s mission is “Learn. Lead.

Confidence early on in STEM subjects is vital to Southeast Polk students continuing their learning into junior high, high school, and postsecondary experiences.

Students participating in PLTW will learn to solve problems, think critically, and follow a structured design process. They will learn making mistakes is not only okay, but an important part of learning. Teachers will benefit from participating. Teachers develop instructional knowledge and content knowledge around science and engineering practices. Currently, teachers are beginning to study and implement these as required in the Iowa core science standards. PLTW will allow teachers to move forward with best practices in teaching students to solve problems and think critically at rigorous levels.

Pleasant Hill Parade & Family Fun Fest Saturday July 21st Pleasant Hill Parade and Family Fun Fest is an event created especially for family fun in Pleasant Hill. The Pleasant Hill Lion’s Club organizes the parade which has on average 80 participants. The parade will begin at 10 AM at Doanes Park ending near City Hall. After the parade we encourage everyone to come to Scooter’s Coffee for Smoothies with Cops. Scooters will offer discounted smoothies, and our local police department will be available for fun. We will have a Car Show with old cars and motorcycles during Smoothies with Cops in the Scooters Parking Lot. In the afternoon we will be having inflatables available along with children games. At dusk we will be showing a movie in the park. Movie to be determined.

Both attractions will be held at Copper Creek Lake Park.

Attendees can bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets while they enjoy the outdoor movie. Stay after the movie for a fireworks display. Family Fun Fest is a free event and food will be available for purchase.

Lunch Clubs The Pleasant Hill Chamber hosts two lunch clubs per month. This event is for local businesses and residents who would like to network and learn about important information within our city. Most lunches start at 11:30 AM and location changes based on the presenter. Cost is also based on location and can vary. Grow Pleasant Hill is a coalition seeking to develop a unique, inter-connected regional community that cultivates health through innovation and thriving economy. The Mission of East Polk Innovation Collaborative(EPIC) is to aggressively pursue a focused growth agenda that recognizes and supports the unique needs and character of each EPIC community, markets the EPIC region as a premiere location within the Greater Des Moines metropolitan area and continually fosters a collaborative environment among EPIC communities.

East Polk Innovation Collaborative serves as the Economic Development driver for the

cities of Pleasant Hill, Altoona, Mitchellville and Bondurant. With development expanding into the region rapidly over the past few years, it is our job to promote and facilitate. We do this in several ways. We market our region for logistics, manufacturing, retail and data center companies.

We also work with local developers, land owners and stakeholders to assist with the development process. Not least of what we do is work with our existing businesses. Their growth and can be assisted through several state and local programs.

We strive to bring value to everyone we serve.
