CORPORATION ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Established in 2006 by Princeton voters, the Economic Development Corporation is tasked with driving the city’s economic engine through strategic investment, land planning, and job creation. The EDC focuses on attracting new commercial and industrial capital investment, creating higher-paying jobs for residents, and leading land acquisition and development that will position Princeton for long-term prosperity. Its efforts are also closely tied to the work of the Community Development Corporation, ensuring that both organizations complement one another in creating the right environment for growth.

“Our mission is simple but powerful,” said Jim Wehmeier, CEO of the Princeton EDC and CDC. “We want to create the kind of economic environment where businesses can thrive and families can find opportunities right here in Princeton. By carefully planning land use and investing in infrastructure, we’re building the foundation for sustainable growth.”

“WE WANT TO CREATE THE KIND OF ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT WHERE BUSINESSES CAN THRIVE.”

A key part of the EDC’s vision is the cultivation of five distinct “sub-economies” within the Princeton area. Along U.S. 380, development is already well underway, while the downtown district is being reimagined into a walkable hub of shops, restaurants, and connections to Veterans Park. The northern bypass is positioned to attract significant commercial growth, while the southern bypass, anchored by the Myrick corridor, is primed for medical, professional office, and retail development. Lake Lavon represents another critical opportunity, offering recreational and tourism potential that can enhance both the economy and the community’s identity.

Currently, the EDC owns 53.4 acres at Myrick and Beauchamp. That property is being re-zoned from industrial to a commercial planned development designed to support medical, office, and retail uses. Where permitted, the EDC also invests in infrastructure to ensure new projects have the support they need to succeed.

TESTIMONIAL

Joining the Princeton-Lowry Crossing Chamber of Commerce has been one of the best decisions I’ve made for both myself and Little Lion Cookie Company. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed into a community that truly cares. The support, encouragement, and connections I’ve found here have had a lasting and positive impact on my business. It’s more than networking — it’s genuine people showing up for one another, cheering each other on, and celebrating growth together. I’m so grateful for this incredible community and encourage any business owner to get involved.

PRINCETON

OFFERS PRODUCTIVE PATHWAY

GDistrict provides programs to get students involved in meaningful activities that lead to future success

rowth isn’t just a developer’s buzz word for Princeton ISD. It’s the word that keeps the district moving forward with intention, not just in terms of providing the space to house all the students, but by strategically expanding programs and offerings to match the needs of the student population.

Keeping this in mind, district administrators are always looking for ways to improve the education offered by Princeton ISD. With a mission to inspire and enable each student to achieve their full potential, PISD has placed an emphasis on getting students involved, whether it’s academics, sports, extracurriculars or clubs.

It’s becoming more and more important to use this philosophy to seek ways to ensure every student has an opportunity to find their place, especially since roughly 1,400 new students are enrolling each year.

“Princeton ISD prides itself in creating pathways for students to be successful,” Superintendent Donald McIntyre said. “We want our kids to find their passion, so the more opportunities they have, the more likely it is that they will find what interests them.”

Career offerings

One of its key programs has notably become a valuable resource for the district’s high schoolers. The renowned Career and Technical Education program currently boasts 20 career options where students can receive valuable hands-on training and certifications that lead to further education or apprenticeships or straight to the job market.

“Our CATE program offers courses designed to enhance student opportunities for post-secondary education or training in high-demand, high-growth and high-wage careers,” CATE Director Brett Hackman said.

Courses are offered in numerous fields, including agriculture technology, animal science, auto tech, audio/video, commercial photography, computer tech, construction trades, cosmetology, culinary arts, EMT, engineering, entrepreneurship, family and community services, HVAC, nursing, physical rehab, plant science, teaching and training and welding.

“Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment to simulate a professional workplace,” Mr. Hackman said. “And the district is always researching the best opportunities for Princeton ISD stu-

dents, as well as which are most needed in the community.”

Research recently led to the addition of electrical engineering technology, which prepares students for a career in the booming semiconductor industry with jobs immediately available in North Texas upon graduation from high school.

College credits

For more than nine years, Princeton ISD has worked alongside Collin College to assist students in obtaining a post-secondary education. Through the partnership, Princeton graduates can leave high school with an associate’s degree.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to help our students get a jump start on their college education,” Mr. McIntyre said.

The dual credit classes for Princeton students are fully funded by PISD, up to an associate’s degree.

“PHS graduates have the ability to enter college nearly two years ahead, which saves them thousands of dollars,” Mr. McIntyre said. “We are extremely proud of the program and what it offers our students.”

Learning environment

In addition to a varied curriculum designed to offer something for everyone, PISD makes sure the learning environment is conducive to a quality education.

Voter approval of a bond package in May 2023 paved the way for eight new campuses by 2030, and the first of these, Perkins Early Childhood Center, opened this year.

“Our student population is expected to more than double in the next 10 years,” Mr. McIntyre said.

PISD hit an enrollment of 11,000 this school year, and according to Mr. McIntyre, demographers project Princeton ISD to have 24,946 students by the start of the 2034-2035 school year.

“We are always thankful to the community for their support,” Mr. McIntyre said. “With the passage of the bond package in 2023, the district can continue to build quality facilities to meet the needs of our growing student population.”

For the 2026-2027 school year, the district’s fourth middle school and elementary school No. 9 will open. These two campuses, Tom Banschbach Middle School and Joyce Carrell Elementary, are being built on adjacent properties located along the future exten-

sion of Cypress Bend Parkway situated in the area west of Beauchamp Boulevard, north of Myrick Lane and east of Simpson Road.

Two additional elementary campuses, one in the north and one in the south, are in the planning stages, with completion in time for the ‘27-28 school year. The district’s second senior high school, which will be located adjacent to Harper Elementary, is in the design phase and will open in ‘29. Students come first

School facilities are just one facet to help PISD maintain quality education for its students.

“Princeton ISD works to be extremely child-centered,” McIntyre said. “District goals are developed with our students as the No. 1 priority.”

Goals include:

•Providing child-centered campuses that encourage all students to experience success.

•Ensuring full continuum of services for all student programs.

•Recruiting, challenging, developing and retaining qualified and productive staff who model an atmosphere of excellence.

•Fostering community involvement.

•Providing for the growth and ever-changing demographics of Princeton ISD.

“As a district, we are always striving to improve,” Mr. McIntyre said. “We are never satisfied with where we are. We continually want more for our students, even the ones who aren’t here yet.”

The district is always researching the best OPPORTUNITIES for students.”

Founded in 1997, the Community Development Corporation serves as the counterpart to the EDC, with a mission centered on quality of life, community assets, and workforce readiness. The CDC partners with the EDC to promote capital investment and job creation, while also focusing heavily on projects that directly improve the lives of Princeton residents.

Among its many investments, the CDC owns the Steve and Judy Deffibaugh Community Center, funds improvements in public safety for both police and fire, and even purchased the Parks Department’s “Party Trailer” so residents can enjoy it at community events. The CDC also invests in local parks and has agreed to fund the maintenance of three Corps of Engineers parks on Lake Lavon once they are leased by the city, protecting them from closure and ensuring long-term recreational access. These efforts also support Princeton’s broader tourism goals by maintaining the lake as a destination.

“The CDC is about more than just dollars and cents,” Wehmeier explained. “It’s about investing in the things that make Princeton a great place to live—our parks, our community center, public safety, and our students. When we strengthen the quality of life, we also set ourselves up for a stronger our economy.”

The CDC has also taken the lead in supporting workforce training. In partnership with Princeton ISD and the Chamber of Commerce, the organization created “Princeton Ready,” an apprenticeship program that connects students with opportunities to learn trades. Additionally, the Officer Dominguez Memorial Scholarship, established in collaboration with Collin College, offers financial support to students pursuing degrees in criminal justice to continue to strengthen our pipeline for public safety talent. Alongside these initiatives, the CDC invests in infrastructure projects in conjunction with the City of Princeton, further strengthening the foundation for growth.
