A LEGACY WORTH CARRYING FORWARD.

The 2026 event’s founder tribute honors Bishop Dr. Claude Porter, founder of PLCCA and Bridging the Gap. Pictured above Bishop Porter’s family with Illinois House of Representative 8th District, LaShawn K. Ford and Mayor of Maywood, Nathaniel George Booker.

The Foundation of the Work

One Legacy, Many Connections: Building Bridges Together

Over 20 years ago, Bishop Dr. Claude Porter founded the iconic Bridging the Gap Parade, bringing together all 18 school throughout the districts in a powerful display of unity. Three years ago, he envisioned its revival expanding the tradition by adding the dynamic Community Resource Fair. Today, carrying forward the torch lit by Bishop Porter, his daughters PLCCA President & CEO Claudette P. Harrell and Chief Operating Officer Beverly P. Smith are honoring that original vision. By meeting the community right where it is, they are forging vibrant new pathways of togetherness and empowerment for generations to come.

Under this year’s inspiring theme, "One Legacy, Many Bridges," the success of this monumental event was made possible through the dedication of corporate and media partners whose values align directly with the unity and excellence championed by Bishop Porter for decades. We extend our deepest gratitude to our visionaries and supporters:

As Mayor Katrina Thompson shared during her heartfelt tribute to Bishop Porter: "We are doing more than marching we are honoring the legacy of a visionary whose life's work has been dedicated to service, faith, and community empowerment." That sentiment echoed across the entire celebration. Legendary NBA veteran and Proviso East High School basketball icon Coach Dee Brown reflected on his personal motivation for joining the event: returning to the community where his journey first began, seeing the smiles on young faces, and feeling the energy of an entire neighborhood coming together. THE STREETS TOLD THE STORY.

On September 12th, the vibrant pavement connecting Bellwood and Maywood became a living canvas of culture, pride, and togetherness. The Bridging the Gap Parade, proved once again that a parade is far more than music and moving floats it is a powerful movement. Stepping off at Winfield Scott Park, the energy was electric as neighbors gathered along the route, turning ordinary suburban sidewalks into an extraordinary homecoming celebration for the entire community. As Master Chief Ling Rushing from Proviso West High School in Hillside reflected while his band marched down 5th Avenue and Washington Boulevard, "The culture out here is great, the feeling out here is better, and we are having a great time. This community is more than a neighborhood it’s a loving environment." As the procession marched down 25th Avenue and surged onto Washington Boulevard, every block told a unique story. The pure wonder in the eyes of local youth watching colorful floats and marching bands was matched by the warm, knowing smiles of long-time residents cheering from porch chairs. Spectators from Maywood, Bellwood, Broadview, Hillside, Forest Park, Westchester, North Riverside, and Melrose Park stood shoulder-to-shoulder, proving that when neighbors come together, geographical boundaries dissolve into shared heritage and joy. When asked along the route what community means to them, paradegoers captured the heart of the day: "A sense of belonging, friendship, fellowship." Another spectator noted, "People young, rich, old that’s community," while a lifelong resident shared, "I’ve been in Maywood my whole life; this parade means everything to me." Participants and local partners marched with purpose with leaders like Roosevelt Elementary School Principal Joseph Gray proudly declaring, "We support PLCCA!"

The event carried forward a legacy that built the foundation for generations of advocates and champions who continue to walk in Bishop Porter's footsteps. The streets led the crowd directly to the gates of Proviso East High School, where the celebration transitioned seamlessly into a dynamic Community Resource Fair. Here, the spirit of unity took concrete form as families engaged with local service providers, enjoyed live performances, and explored resource hubs designed to uplift every household. The atmosphere on the ground was unmistakable, prompting Power 92.3 FM’s DJ Nephets to declare over the airwaves, "If you’re not here, you’re missing a vibe!" It was a vibrant marketplace of opportunity where civic leaders, corporate allies, and grassroots organizers met residents exactly where they were. When the final notes of music faded, the message left behind on those streets was undeniable: unity is active, resilient, and deeply rooted. As one attendee voiced, "Standing together and being here is what we need... it’s wonderful to see and I hope it happens every year." Supported by a strong coalition of community leaders, public officials, and dedicated sponsors, the parade did more than commemorate history it paved the way toward a brighter, more connected future. As neighbors walked away with new connections and renewed pride, the story written on the streets of Proviso Township will echo for generations to come.

CLASSROOMS TO COMMUNITY.

One Mission, Many Schools: A Powerful Youth Movement

Together our youth marched Our youth are the true heartbeat of Bishop Porter’s vision for the Bridging the Gap Parade a celebration created not only to welcome students back to school, but to remind them every day that their community believes in their potential and stands behind them. Stepping out of the classrooms and onto the pavement, students took over the streets in a powerful display of unity, pride, and school spirit. In strong partnership with Proviso Township High School District 209, Bellwood School District 88, District 89, and local youth organizations, this positive youth movement filled the air with dynamic energy, music, and cheer. As one Lions Cheerleader proudly declared, "We are going to show the community who we are!" That unstoppable spirit vibrated through every block as local teams and clubs marched side by side. The streets came alive with rhythmic cadences, roaring chants, and breathtaking acrobatic stunts from the Proviso East Pirates Football & Cheer, Proviso West Panthers Football & Cheer, Roosevelt Middle School Raiders Cheer, Jane Addams Elementary JA Panthers Cheer, Stevenson Middle School SMS Cheer, Memorial Park Spartans, Roosevelt Bulldog Cheerleaders, and the Lions Cheerleaders just to name a few. Adding to the excitement, PLCCA · 411 MADISON STREET, MAYWOOD, IL 60153 · PLCCA.ORG

Chicago Mobile Hoops showcased impressive basketball skills right along the route, while youth gridiron athletes from the Proviso Township Bills Football & Cheer marched alongside high school players from Proviso West and Proviso East. The musical talent and academic pride of the region were on full display throughout the procession. Smooth melodies from the Proviso West High School Jazz Ensemble filled the air, while student-athletes from the Proviso Math and Science Academy (PMSA) Tennis Team proudly carried banners emblazoned with #WeAreProviso. The celebration reached even further across Chicagoland, welcoming special guests from the far South Side the renowned Morgan Park High School Band of Distinction. Bringing 75 talented student musicians and dancers ranging from 7th to 12th grade, they infused the parade route with undeniable energy and neighborhood cheer. Watching these young leaders march together served as a triumphant reminder of what happens when a community rallies around its future. From high-flying cheer stunts to the booming bass of marching bands, our youth proved that they are ready to excel both in the classroom and in the community. As they continued the new academic year, the message from the crowd was loud and clear: we see you, we honor you, and we are cheering for your success every step of the way! PAGE 09

While a great celebration brings people together, direct access to accessible resources is what truly empowers lasting change. By bringing over 90 specialized organizations into the heart of the neighborhood, the fair removed traditional barriers like transportation challenges, complex application processes, and a lack of awareness. Bringing healthcare providers, educational programs, job placement services, and youth advocacy groups into a single, welcoming space gave residents immediate, face-to-face guidance. Attendees enjoyed a delicious spread from local food vendors serving everything from tacos and barbecue to fried green tomatoes and fresh-squeezed lemonade, alongside unforgettable entertainment that united the crowd. The performance lineup featured a crowd participation performance by Rico Michael Jackson, a jaw-dropping routine by the legendary Jesse White Tumblers fresh off their national spotlight on America’s Got Talent showcasing the extraordinary talent and discipline of local youth, as well as a captivating performance by Ballet Folklorico celebrating rich cultural heritage through colorful traditional costuming and graceful choreography. By bridging the gap between vital services and the families who need them most, the event did more than inform it empowered neighbors to take confident, meaningful steps forward.

PLCCA YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES - 2026 SUMMER CAMP HIGHLIGHTS

ACTION. DISCOVERY. A SUMMER TO REMEMBER.

DIVISION 1 OF 7

This summer, PLCCA provided youth with an exciting and enriching experience through six unique program areas that combined academics, athletics, creative arts, and social-emotional learning. Throughout the summer, students developed new skills, built meaningful friendships, and gained confidence while participating in hands-on activities, educational field trips, and positive mentorship.

Students in the Theater program discovered their creativity through acting, storytelling, rehearsals, and performance-based activities. Along the way, they strengthened their confidence, communication skills, teamwork, and self-expression while learning the value of collaboration and supporting one another on and off the stage.

The Basketball program helped students improve their fundamental skills through drills, competitions, and team play. Beyond the court, participants developed confidence, communication skills, teamwork, and emotional resilience while building lasting friendships and learning the importance of positive sportsmanship.

Learning Beyond the Classroom One of the highlights of the summer was our educational field trips, which reminded students that learning doesn't stop when they leave the classroom. Students explored the wonders of science and space during their visit to the Cernan Earth and Space Center at Triton College, where they learned about astronomy and the universe. At the Brookfield Zoo, they discovered fascinating wildlife while exploring topics like zoology, ecology, and conservation. During their trip to Topgolf, students learned the fundamentals of golf while building confidence, self-motivation, self-control, and perseverance through fun, interactive activities. Each field trip also incorporated Social Emotional Learning (SEL), giving students opportunities to strengthen their communication, relationshipbuilding, social awareness, teamwork, and decision-making skills in exciting new environments.

PLCCA’s Civic Engagement Program Makes an Impact at the 2026 XL Fest PLCCA’s Youth & Family Services had the extraordinary privilege of attending the 2026 XL Fest held at The David Rubenstein Forum on Saturday, August 22, following an exclusive invitation from festival founder and visionary Troy Pryor, Creative Cypher. Designed to celebrate innovation, media, and community-driven storytelling, the event provided PLCCA youth with front-row access to a powerful cultural experience. The highlight of the festival was a special screening of Saving O Block, a compelling film that sparked deep reflection and dynamic dialogue among attendees. By bringing local youth into this inspiring creative space, the trip reinforced PLCCA’s ongoing mission to empower the next generation through civic engagement, cultural enrichment, and direct exposure to transformative community narratives.

Interactive Learning, Q&A, and Media Spotlight with Will Gates Beyond watching the film, the young participants enjoyed a rare hands-on opportunity to engage directly with the creative minds behind the project. Following the screening, PLCCA youth participated in an intimate Q&A session with the film’s director Will Gates and executive producer, Pastor Corey Brooks, gaining firsthand insight into the power of storytelling, production, and reclaiming community narratives. Adding to the excitement, the group met Will Gates on the red carpet, taking memorable photos and filming an official XL Fest promotional clip alongside him. This unforgettable experience not only broadened their horizons in media and the arts, but also left our youth inspired to share their own voices and stories with the world.

Building Champions On and Off the Course: The Joseph P. Abrazino KNK Golf Program This summer, 45 young participants from the Proviso Township community stepped onto the greens at Links & Tees Golf Facility in Addison, Illinois, embarking on a transformative journey through the Joseph P. Abrazino Kidz N Klubs (KNK) Golf Program. Hosted by PLCCA in partnership with the Proviso Township Mental Health Commission, the initiative was designed to give youth more than just an introduction to the sport it provided a safe, supportive space to grow both physically and mentally. Throughout the season, participants received hands-on golf instruction, mastering everything from proper stance and swing mechanics to course etiquette. But the impact extended far beyond learning the game. Integrated into every week were interactive mental health awareness sessions tailored specifically for young people. Participants engaged in meaningful discussions focused on emotional well-being, personal resilience, and practical strategies for managing stress and life’s daily challenges. The summer culminated in a powerful awards ceremony where family, coaches, and community members gathered to celebrate each child’s dedication, personal growth, and achievements. From hitting their first clean drive to building confidence and lifelong coping skills, every participant left the program equipped to navigate both the course and their personal lives with strength and self-assurance. PLCCA CHILDREN & FAMILY SERVICES

DIVISION 2 OF 7

A STRONG START. A SHARED YEAR.

Recruitment, staff readiness, school orientation, and a picnic to remember.

TRANSITION DAY: MY FUTURE IS SO BRIGHT Celebrating Our Preschool as they transition to kindergarten· June 2026 The end of every school year brings a mixture of excitement, pride, and sadness. Families celebrate all that their children have accomplished throughout their preschool journey, while staff experience the bittersweet moment of watching their students leave the center and move on to kindergarten. Although saying goodbye is never easy, there is also great excitement as everyone looks forward to the wonderful adventures and opportunities that await these young learners. Children and Family Services celebrated this important milestone with its annual Transition Ceremony at the Best Western in Hillside. Proud parents and family members gathered to witness one of the first major accomplishments in their children’s educational journeys. For more than a month, teachers worked diligently to prepare the students for this special day. The children practiced their songs, built their confidence, and prepared to walk across the stage to receive their certificates of completion. Their hard work and dedication were evident as they proudly performed for their families and celebrated how far they had come. This year’s theme, “My Future Is So Bright, I’ve Gotta Wear Shades!” brought excitement and color to the celebration. Staff transformed the room into a festive setting filled with balloons, banners, and special touches to honor each child’s accomplishments. Every student was prepared to receive sunglasses, a sash, and a book bag to help them get ready for their next school year and the exciting journey ahead. The ceremony was filled with laughter, proud smiles, happy tears, and heartfelt moments as families and staff reflected on the growth and development of each child. While it was difficult to say goodbye to students who had become such an important part of the center’s family, the day was also a celebration of new beginnings. As our young graduates prepare to take their next steps into kindergarten, Children and Family Services wishes each of them continued success. Their futures are bright, their possibilities are endless, and this is only the beginning of their educational adventures!

END-OF-YEAR CELEBRATION CFS Celebrates the End of the School Year with Annual Picnic· June 2026 Children and Family Services brought together staff, children, families, and friends from across all its programs for the annual end-of-school-year picnic at Rossi Pavilion in Northlake. The event was filled with laughter, fun, and opportunities for families and staff to connect while celebrating another successful school year. Guests enjoyed a variety of activities, including bouncy houses, face painting, relay races, music, and life-size games for both children and adults. A delicious lunch of hot dogs and fried chicken was served, giving families the opportunity to sit together, share a meal, and enjoy each other’s company. With beautiful weather and plenty of smiles all around, the picnic was a wonderful day of celebration, fellowship, and fun. It was the perfect way to close out the school year and create lasting memories for the children, families, and staff of Children and Family Services. A Place to Call Home: Jasper Ivy When Jasper Ivy came to PLCCA through a referral from a community resource, he was employed but faced significant housing instability. He had been staying from house to house while searching for a place to call his own. Although he had the income to maintain housing, he needed guidance navigating affordable housing resources, completing applications, and arranging transportation to appointments and apartment viewings. Despite the uncertainty of his living situation, Jasper remained optimistic, motivated, and committed to achieving stable housing. PLCCA worked closely with Jasper throughout the housing process by identifying affordable housing opportunities, assisting him with completing and submitting his apartment application, coordinating transportation support, and maintaining regular follow-up to ensure every step of the process moved forward. Beyond the Past: How Kendall Davis Reclaimed His Future Kendall Davis stands as living proof that a past never dictates a future. Through sheer determination and targeted support from the Proviso Leyden Council for Community Action (PLCCA) and the Juvenile Justice Advisory Council (JAC) Re-Entry Program, Kendall has completely transformed his life trajectory. Entering the re-entry program seeking a genuine second chance, Kendall matched PLCCA’s structural guidance with an unbreakable work ethic. He capitalized on vocational training opportunities to earn his Forklift License, then pushed further into high-demand technical labor by securing his HVAC Certification instantly evolving from facing employment barriers to becoming a highly competitive technical candidate. Kendall’s incredible drive is showcased daily through his commitment to financial independence and professional growth. Balancing two demanding jobs, he earned deep respect from employers and peers for his exceptional reliability and work ethic. But Kendall envisioned even more for his future. Using the business acumen and financial stability gained from his dual employment, he officially launched his own enterprise, transitioning from rebuilding his life to taking full control as an independent entrepreneur. The most profound milestone came through a major legal victory. Supported by his dedicated re-entry advocacy network, Kendall successfully navigated the legal system to have his past records officially sealed and expunged. The Power of Persistence & Support: Devon’s Story When Devon Fields first arrived at PLCCA, he was facing a severe housing crisis that left him feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. Living on a fixed SSI income, Devon fell behind on rent and received a five-day eviction notice, placing him at immediate risk of losing his home. Despite the immense financial strain, Devon stayed engaged, working closely with his case manager to gather key documentation, coordinate with his representative payee, and build a clear action plan. Over the following weeks, Devon attended every appointment, submitted paperwork, and received supportive counseling and targeted service referrals. PLCCA staff guided him through applying for the Community-Based Rental Assistance Program (CBRAP). Throughout the stressful waiting period, Devon remained hopeful and dedicated to every required step. His perseverance and PLCCA’s unwavering advocacy led to a life-changing breakthrough: Devon was approved for $4,950 in CBRAP rental assistance. This critical funding completely cleared his past-due rent, paid eviction fees, and covered his next month’s rent permanently removing the threat of eviction. FROM THE BRINK OF GIVING UP TO UNSTOPPABLE GROWTH A Father’s Lifeline: How Mr. Roosevelt Reclaimed His Family’s Future Success Story: Andrew Roosevelt When Andrew Roosevelt first walked through the doors of PLCCA, he was searching for far more than just a job he was fighting for a future where he could give his children the security and life they deserved. After facing endless closed doors and crushing setbacks, Andrew felt completely exhausted, deeply discouraged, and was even preparing to pack up and leave Illinois entirely. PLCCA was truly his final lifeline of hope. Connecting with our Employment and Training Services (ETS) team, Andrew channeled his profound love for his children into an unbreakable determination. Refusing to let hardship define his family's story, he leaned on the guidance of staff who believed in him when his own hope was fading. That shared faith ignited a powerful spark. Soon, Andrew celebrated an inspiring milestone by securing employment at KFC, proving that his persistence was paying off. Driven by an unwavering desire to build lasting financial stability, Andrew refused to stop there. Today, he is expanding his career journey by pursuing a second employment opportunity with Amped Kitchens as a custodial worker, creating an even stronger foundation and a brighter tomorrow for his beloved children. Andrew credits the compassionate ETS team with standing by his side during a time when he was close to giving up. Their relentless support reminded him of his true worth and gave him the strength to keep believing in himself. Today, Andrew stands tall as living proof that when a loving father's resilience meets community support, hope is fully restored and transformation becomes unstoppable!

Beyond his personal triumphs, Andrew’s journey has sent ripples of hope through his entire family and community. His children now watch their father step out each day with pride, purpose, and a renewed sense of possibility, learning firsthand that obstacles can be overcome with heart and perseverance. By sharing his path, Andrew has transformed his own season of struggle into a powerful blueprint for others who feel close to giving up, proving that with the right support, every family can rise above adversity and thrive.

From Uncertainty to Purpose: How Sheila Anderson Found Her Calling in Chicago When Sheila Anderson relocated to Chicago to assist with the care of her elderly and disabled family members, she felt uncertain about where to find support. Like many devoted family caregivers, Sheila poured her heart into assisting her loved ones without realizing that programs existed to provide both essential resources and financial compensation for her dedication. Her turning point came after connecting with Proviso Leyden Council for Community Action (PLCCA). Working alongside WIOA Career Coach Ashley Johnson, Sheila explored options tailored to her family's unique needs. Ms. Ashley guided her through enrolling her relatives in professional home care services and successfully transitioning Sheila into a paid Home Care Aide role, allowing her to turn daily caregiving into a compensated, fulfilling career. To help Sheila build further financial stability, PLCCA also assisted her in securing a second role with A4 Transport, transporting children with disabilities safely to and from school. Through these combined employment opportunities, Sheila found meaningful work while continuing to serve her community. Reflecting on her journey, Sheila jokingly recalled arriving in Chicago with a list of 27 things she initially disliked about the city. Today, thanks to the life-changing guidance and personalized care she received, Sheila proudly shares that PLCCA and Ms. Ashley hold a very cherished spot on her short list of things she loves. JULY/AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2026 · SUMMER RETROSPECTIVE

PLCCA IN THE COMMUNITY IT SERVES

UNITING FOR PEACE BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITIES Maywood & Broadview Celebrate National Night Out

On a warm summer evening, the streets of Maywood and Broadview came alive with unity, laughter, and shared purpose as residents, local leaders, and first responders gathered for the annual National Night Out celebration. Designed to foster strong community-police partnerships and promote safer, more connected neighborhoods, this year’s regional festivities offered an unforgettable evening of family fun, vital resources, and civic pride across both villages. From interactive exhibits and police demonstrations to live music, games, and local food vendors, the events created welcoming spaces where neighbors of all ages could connect on a personal level. Representatives from local police and fire departments joined forces with community organizations including the Proviso Leyden Council for Community Action, Inc. (PLCCA) to engage directly with families, share essential health and safety information, and distribute neighborhood resources. More than just a block party, National Night Out served as a powerful reminder of what is possible when communities stand united. By bridging the gap between law enforcement, local leaders, and the residents they serve, Maywood and Broadview continue to build safer, more resilient neighborhoods where every resident feels supported, valued, and empowered to thrive together.

PARTNERING FOR PROGRESS: PLCCA TAKES THE STAGE AT TASTE OF BELLWOOD At the vibrant Taste of Bellwood, Proviso Leyden Council for Community Action, Inc. (PLCCA) proudly stood as a key event sponsor, highlighting the power of community collaboration and shared progress. Taking the stage alongside Mayor Andre F. Harvey and Judge Gay Chase, PLCCA President & CEO Claudette P. Harrell delivered inspiring remarks about the upcoming Bridging the Gap Parade & Community Resource Fair. Harrell emphasized how this crucial partnership with local leadership reflects a unified vision to uplift families, expand access to vital community resources, and build stronger, safer neighborhoods across the township. Her address underscored that when civic leaders, local government, and community organizations unite, they create lasting opportunities and a brighter future for every resident they serve. Building on this momentum, the event served as a powerful springboard to bring local organizations together in direct support of area families. Through these continued joint efforts, PLCCA and its dedicated leaders remain steadfast in their mission to transform community engagement into lasting, life-changing impact.
