This week has been a very visible display of community at PLC Armidale. Bookended by the Junior School Information Evening on Monday and the annual Scholarship Examination with Parent Workshops tomorrow. It has been a week full of finding out, farewells and family. A week which highlighted once more that people make the place which is PLC Armidale. Thank you to the many parents who attended the Junior School Information Evening. With an opportunity to gather informally, meet teachers, learn more about classroom routines, be introduced to key staff who provided services to students and parents across the College s well as representatives of our stakeholder groups. It was a delight to watch the Junior School girls enjoy a balmy summer evening making the most of an uninterrupted playtime in their beautiful grounds very ably supervised by our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award students. The Whole School Swimming Carnival held on one of the coolest days of the week saw the temperature rise poolside as the Guilds put on a loud and colourful display of War Cries to cap off the friendly rivalry evident in the pool. Today we farewell Mr Trent Donaldson as a valued member of the Executive and Teaching staff and welcomed him as the Year 3 Liaison parent. We have strong registrations for our annual Scholarship Examination being conducted tomorrow morning with some new scholarship opportunities for Senior Secondary students attracting much interest. Whilst the girls focus on the examinations, parents have been invited to attend a complimentary workshop with consultant psychologist Ms Penny Kempton and colleague Pedro Sousa. They will present on the topics of “Girls in A Social Media World” and “Surviving Adolescents’ respectively, building strong connections along the way. These workshops are also available to our current families and staff, and I would encourage you to attend.

Finally, a special thank you to Mrs Paula Goode our much valued Design and Technology Teacher who for several years has led a group of women in the community, assisted by girls from PLC Armidale to prepare personalised sanitary product kits for girls and women in developing nations. Paula gives generously of her time and expertise each year to this project. She patiently instructs, graciously assists and encourages the completion of a product which has been recognised by the organisers of this campaign for quality. Last year, 2 large bags of kits were sent from Armidale and distributed in Laos. This year, the Armidale Team has been asked to supply between 300-500 kits for Indonesia and Africa!

NEWS

As a school, we are often complimented on the contributions we make to the wider community and our region. This afternoon also provides an opportunity for the links and relationships forged with many of these Community groups to be showcased. Our Community Open Day, will see many of our past, current and future families enjoy a range of activities and events available to our students, as well learning more about the organisations the College actively supports or partners with.

The first production session will be held at PLC Armidale later this month and I’m sure Paula would welcome new volunteers to this team.

DR SARAH MCKAY PARENT PRESENTATION

Dr Sarah McKay is an increasingly influential brain health commentator, neuroscientist and TEDx speaker who specialises in translating brain science research into simple, actionable strategies for peak performance, creativity, mental health and wellbeing. Sarah is the author of 'The Women's Brain Book' - the Neuroscience of Health, Hormones and Happiness, a presenter with ABC Catalyst, and the director of The Neuroscience Academy, which offers professional development programs in applied neuroscience and brain health.

Dr McKay completed a MSc and PhD in neuroscience at Oxford University in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics. She sums her PhD thesis up in four words, ‘Nature, Nurture or Neuroplasticity?’ After five years at the lab bench conducting neuroplasticity research, Sarah worked up the courage to hang up her lab coach and pursue a career teaching others about the mind and brain. She lives on the Northern Beaches in Sydney, Australia with her husband and together they are raising two surfer dudes. Sarah combines a wry sense of humour with an uncompromising mind and a natural ability at making the complex simple and practical. Whether she is writing, speaking or teaching, she tells impeccably researched evidence-based stories in a simple, fun and compelling way. Sarah writes for numerous publications and has been published extensively for consumers and professional audiences. She’s been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Australian Women’s Health, Daily Life, Sydney Morning Herald, Body & Soul, and has been heard and seen on SBS Insight, ABC Catalyst, ABC Radio National, Radio NZ, Channel 7, The Exchange TV and others. Student Absence or Exemption from Attendance 2019 Under the NSW Education Act, school attendance is compulsory until the age of 17. As a school, we have a Duty of Care responsibility to see that students enrolled at the College are in a regular pattern of attendance unless there are special circumstances making this difficult. With the term now well underway it is pleasing to see everyone settled and engaged with their learning, signing up for summer sports, speech and drama, music lessons and ensembles. Last week our School Photo day ran very smoothly. Thank you to Damian Riches and his staff at MSP, who included this year, our very own ex student, Eliza Cunningham. It was particularly special to have the staff and students gather together in the Rose Garden for our Whole School Photo.

Connections After our Connect Orientation day, IT Connect Bootcamp and the Year 7 Friendship Connect Camp last week, our Year 7 girls have settled in really well and are to be commended for their level of organisation, arriving equipped, prepared and on time for each lesson and for navigating their way around the campus for all their classes.

Jewellery and Make-Up The only jewellery that is permitted to be worn is a wrist watch and one pair of small stud earrings, that are either gold, silver or pearl, and only worn in the lower lobe. They must be small in size and round studs, not different shapes, no sleepers and no diamontes. Students will be asked to remove any item of jewellery that is not allowed and will be issued with a demerit.

A reminder that no makeup is to be worn to school. If a student does wear makeup to school she will be asked to remove it. This includes nail polish as well. Students will be issued with a demerit for breaching these rules. These rules are clearly stated in the Student Diaries and the Student Handbook.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Bronze Training The greatest and most inspiring mountain climbing achievements in history are not so much stories of individual achievement, but are stories of the extraordinary power of a unified, talented, prepared team that stays loyally committed to one another and to their shared vision to the end. Our Year 9 Bronzes have started their training with great enthusiasm and are working together as a very engaged and unified team. They have a shared vision and have already started planning their Gold Adventurous Journeys! These training sessions are compulsory and are on 16 and 23 February 2019 and 2 and 9 March, from 9.30am - 12.30pm.

Thank you to those who were able to attend our Parent Information Session on Monday evening. It was lovely touching base with families and providing the opportunity for you to meet your daughters 2019 class teacher. Establishing a clear understanding of the way each class will operate, communicating student expectations and outlining housekeeping matters ensures a smooth start to our year.

AIS Support This week has seen teachers working with AIS consultants to establish writing units of work aligning to our ever-evolving curriculum and identified need for improvement in this area. The curriculum is placing greater focus on developing students creative thinking and authorial skills when responding and composing text. Careful planning and engaging lesson design, needs to result in developing in students a love of writing, an understanding of why and who we write for, our audience & purpose and how we structure our writing to serve a purpose. It is becoming increasingly obvious the importance of reading broadly and frequently, as exposure to differing forms of writing helps our little girls model the use of words and conventions to create their own text.

Healthy Harold Our students have enjoyed their yearly visit to Healthy Harold and the Life Education Van. Life Education offers a broad health program aimed at students in their formative years, from PreKindergarten to Year 6. Through participation in Life Education, and in conjunction with the school’s PD/Health/PE program, opportunities are provided for children to develop a healthy respect for themselves and their bodies, self-esteem and selfawareness and skills in dealing with influences in society. These lessons are usually enjoyed by our Junior School students as they reacquaint themselves with ‘Harold’ the Life Education Van mascot, who assists in the delivery of these important messages in a fun and informative way. Following these visits, learning experiences arise from the modules of work introduced to each year level. These modules are as follows;

After School

If a student is to be absent from school, parents are required to fill in the online form or phone the Junior School Reception on 6770 1726 on the morning of the absence before 10am. If notification is not received, Emma Young will make a follow up phone call.

Students are dismissed at 3.30pm and wait at the front of the school building on Crest Road to be collected. A teacher is on duty until 3.45pm. Any child not collected by 3.45pm is taken to 'Homework Centre', phone 0402 474 415.

An email or handwritten note is required explaining the absence within 7 days. Parents will be sent a reminder email for any unexplained absences. Please forward all attendance related emails to Mrs. Emma primarysssist@plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au Parents are requested not to go directly to classrooms during the day. Parents must sign in at the Junior School Office and report to Mrs. Young if something needs to be dropped off to a child. We would appreciate your vigilance with regard to this matter.

Before School The morning bell rings at 8.45am and all children assemble in the courtyard before going to class. Children should arrive after 8.30am. Children who arrive earlier will be supervised from 8.15am. Children in the Pre-Kinder class must be 'signed in' and 'signed out' each day. The 'sign in' book is held in the Pre-Kinder classroom where the teacher will welcome students from 8.30am. Before School: The morning bell rings at 8.40am After School: Students are dismissed at 3.30pm Students are dismissed at 3.25pm if catching the Shuttle Bus to ensure the bus leaves on time.

Leadership PLC Armidale Junior School Leadership Student Leadership is part of our school responsibility in nurturing the physical, educational, social, spiritual and educational needs of our students. It involves respecting the views and opinions of students as well as assisting them to develop problem solving and decision-making skills. It also provides a focus for team building, goal setting, awareness of diversity and conflict resolution. This week, our Year Six girls will present their speeches to Mrs Taylor, Mrs Wake, Staff and the Junior School students. They have crafted speeches with careful attention to selection criteria outlining the qualities of a good leader.

Absences

Despite title or badging, our girls have shown their leadership in many ways through their care for their environment, their respect for others and their guidance and support of the younger members of our JS when they assist them to find friends or engage in play they do not know how to initiate independently. I am very proud of the girls and their willingness to strive for a goal and seek opportunity despite the nervousness and apprehension this can create. It is important the following message be communicated and reinforced to students, leading does not have to be titled, leading is acting and speaking in a way that models for others kindness, respect, honesty, fairness and integrity. I wish all the girls the best of luck as they present on Wednesday and Friday.

YEAR 6 Year Six have had a wonderful start to 2019. I am so incredibly proud of the way the girls have stepped into leading the Junior School – they are looking for and finding opportunities to guide their younger peers on a daily basis. Through showing gently how things are done, engaging in conversation, modelling the right behaviour and listening to others, Year Six girls are earning respect and inspiring a nurturing culture in our classroom and playground. Well done girls, it is going to be an amazing year.

Sport in the senior school is back in full flight. Our three touch football teams took to Rologas Fields with loads of enthusiasm last Wednesday. Our indoor hockey teams played last Thursday, and again were happy to be on the courts again. General Fitness classes commenced on Wednesday 13 February and it was great to see so many girls working on their fitness in preparation for the sporting season ahead. Our tennis squad is back in training. The girls are very enthusiastic and are currently training two days per week. Last weekend some of the girls participated in the Armidale JDS Tournament. Charlotte Caldwell and Alex Wright played in the Open singles while Lauren Williams and Julia Hattingh played in the under 14's. All the girls played extremely well and they were very pleased with the way they played. Lauren played through the round robin matches and made the round of 16 in the knockout, while Julia went through to the ¼ finals. Great results girls! There are many sports and activities that have not started just yet and it is not too late to get involved. Basketball will not start until Tuesday 19 February and we have three teams ready to go. Pilates classes will start on Tuesday 19 February. These classes are open to students and adults. Twilight Netball will commence on Monday 25 February and we still have some places available.

Free Coaching sessions for Years 7 - 9 For those wishing to learn some new skills,or just brush off the cobwebs, we will be having a netball session on Monday 18 February and a hockey session on Tuesday 19 February. These sessions will be held at PLC Armidale and are open to girls in years 7 - 9 who would like to improve their skills, or are looking to take up the sport for the first time. Each of these session will be run by our Senior girls and are free to all students. I look forward to catching up with everyone on the sidelines!

Junior School Sport Sport in the Junior School is well underway for 2019. Indoor hockey, basketball and touch football have now commenced and the girls have resumed with continued enthusiasm and impressive skills. Thursday afternoon tennis has also begun and it was great to see many bright new faces starting up this year. Please make sure you are aware of when your daughter/s train and make sure they are prepared with the appropriate equipment needed. If they train out of school hours, please be prompt in collecting them. All draws and last minute notifications relating to team sports is posted on the Skoolbag app. Please make sure you have this downloaded and have selected the relevant Junior School sports that your daughter is involved in from the ‘my subscriptions’ tab. There is a lot going on with sport in the Junior School, so if you are unsure of anything or require any further information please don’t hesitate to ask.

Matthew Minter, Director of Music and Sam Jacometti We have many wonderful projects scheduled for this year and it is always lovely to start the school year with a sense of excitement. We welcome our new Year 7 students to the music department and it is fantastic to see them already integrated into Senior Strings, Bel canto, Senior Choir and the instrumental programs. We hope that as the year progresses, we can provide a solution to all the musical interest or desire that enters the music department.

Summer Holidays Congratulations to Isla Biffin for being selected for the Australian National Music Camp for the fourth time. The National Music Camp is an event for the leading young orchestral musicians in Australia under the age of 25. The vast majority of students in the national music camp are Tertiary Music students and emerging young professional musicians. For Isla to be selected four years in a row is an excellent achievement. Furthermore Isla was selected for the Advanced Chamber Music program. This program is for the most outstanding students from National Music Camp. This was a tremendous honour and reflects her outstanding musicianship as one of Australia's leading harpists under the age of 25.

NECOM will be running their very educational, dynamic and worthwhile Music Days from 6 March to 8 March for elective students.The 6th of March is the year 9 and 10 Elective Music Day featuring an exciting programme of choral singing, ethnomusicology, and composition workshops. The Higher School Certificate Music Days take place on Thursday 7 March and Friday 8 March. During these two days the students from across the region will experience an exceptional program led by Australia’s leading composers and music educators. The program is specifically tailored to the Higher School Certificate Music Syllabus for Music 1 and Music 2.

Also during the holidays PLC Armidale was very well represented at the National Choral School with nine students attending. The highest number of students from any school outside of a Metropolitan Area in Australia. These students performed with Australia’s leading youth choirs. This was a tremendous honour. Junior School music has kicked off with a bang as we have been preparing items to perform at the PLC Armidale Community Open Day. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the wide and diverse musical talents our students possess. Our sights are also set on the Armidale Eisteddfod and work has commenced on repertoire for these competitions. Alongside this, we have our regular music lessons each week and there have already been some outstanding experiences - often sitting together and writing a song on the best things about being at PLC Armidale. Music in the Junior School is such a crucial part of the junior education as we develop musicality and develop a familiarity with various rhythms and note sets. We always try to maintain a sense of fun about this and foster a natural love of music. Our students love to sing and to create and it is wonderful watching them do this with confidence and courage. As an educator, it is a privilege to be a part of this.

Hire of Instruments At PLC Armidale a range of instruments are available for hire at $75 per term. We currently hire, or can make arrangements for a student to hire, all of the instruments mentioned above. If you are interested in hiring instrument please download an Instrument Hire Form from our website and submit this to Mr Minter or to the front office.

Senior Music is also thriving, with Senior Strings, Bel Canto, Senior Choir, Cello Ensemble, Polly and the Anna's (Popular Music vocal ensemble) and the Concert Band all underway. We are starting a Jazz band as well as looking to expand into some additional contemporary music programs, whilst continuing to maintain our traditions of robust Art and Choral music. Students across all year levels will write and compose music, deliver performances and listen to a wide range of music. If you are interested in being involved in any of the Music ensembles please come along and talk to Mr Minter or Mr Jacometti.

Gondwana Report During the holidays, Abigail Thompson (Year 7), Emily Thompson (Year 8), Gabby Cotterell (Year 8), Sarah Hughes (Year 11), Clare Warwick (Year 11), Lily Graham (Year 11), Izzy Taylor (Year 11), Sophia Mackson (Year 12) and I spent two weeks at the Gondwana National Choral School in Sydney. Emily, Gabby, Clare, Abi, Sarah and I were in Gondwana Voices, conducted by Lyn Williams and Mark O’Leary. We spent most of our days rehearsing a wide variety of pieces, some by Australian composers. Lily, Izzy and Sophia were in Gondwana Singers which was conducted by Paul Jarman, who also composed a piece for the whole choral school to sing called One Pure Voice. This was definitely the highlight of the camp for me as it was such a great opportunity to sing with all the choirs (especially the tenors and basses as Voices is a treble choir). In the afternoons, we had choices of different electives such as Taikoz, Musical Theatre and Voices Berlin Tour. Lily, Sarah and I took part in Gondwana in the Community where we sang at Chris O’Brien’s Lifehouse, Sydney Children’s Hospital and Montefiore Nursing Home. We enjoyed being able to sing our pieces to a wider audience. Lastly, congratulations to Gabby and Emily who will going to Berlin in May for the Gondwana Voices Tour.

The aim of the PLC Armidale and Hilton Old Girls’ Union is to maintain and foster loyalty to the College and to maintain a closer relationship between past and present students.

Our events for Term 1 include: Term 1 Friday, 15 February – 4pm to 8pm PLC Open Community Day. The OGU will hold a Devonshire Tea stand with a photo booth and entertainment from old girl Nikita Nizik.

PLC ARMIDALE P&F ASSOCIATION Last Thursday we held our first meeting for the year. We discussed the organisation of the various events, including yesterday’s Swimming Carnival. Thank you to all the parents & carers who baked Guild-coloured goodies for the P&F stall, and helped prepare and serve the BBQ lunch. All proceeds raised went towards the purchase of College Wish List items.

The COMMUNITY OPEN DAY is on today! The P&F Gourmet BBQ with kofta wraps filled with tabbouleh and tahini as well as gourmet sausage wraps with relish, is well underway! We have the Herd Bar coming this afternoon to provide a bar, selling champagne, wine and beer. You will find us on the grassed area directly in front of the Hospitality Centre. We have also co-ordinated the Night Markets which will be positioned in front of the Astra Arts Centre.
