From the Principal Mrs Nicola Taylor
The 2019 Academic year has begun well as we have welcomed many new students and families across both the Junior and Senior school. It was delightful to see so many attend the Welcome BBQ on Tuesday afternoon with new marquees representing our four Guilds adding colour and much needed shelter in what has been a very warm week! Thank you to the P&F, led by Jules Ditchfield and David Dettwiller for their contribution to the afternoon along with the launch of the parent liaison roles for 2019. The partnership of our parent community in supporting in such practical ways the events and activities of the College is greatly appreciated. Along with our new students, our new members of staff have settled into the College and are looking forward to taking up their respective roles across the College. We welcome Ms Julie Flanagan, Mrs Roxanne Shumack and Ms Sophie Westermarck to the Humanities faculty. Welcome also to Ms Melinda Mumford, Ms Emilia Stevenson, Ms Zoe Swan and Ms Breanna Thomason who have joined us as Duty Mistresses in the Boarding House. Congratulations to Pip Constable (Year 9) who during the break participated in the Under 13 National Indoor Hockey Championships as a member of the Gold medal winning team. Pip was personally recognised for her contribution to the team, as the recipient of the continued on Page 2... Team Citizenship Award.

Congratulations also to the eight PLC Armidale girls who participated in the National Choral School held in Sydney. Gabrielle Cotterell, Lily Graham, Sarah Hughes, Isabelle Taylor, Abigail & Emily Thompson, Eleanor & Clare Warwick, along with Class of 2017 student Dakotah Love made up the largest contingent from any regional school in attendance. Congratulations to Isla Biffin who attended the National Music Camp in Adelaide a much contested program for high performing young musicians. Whilst these were all activities and programs of choice, the girls are to be commended for the self-discipline, focus and commitment each require.
I am delighted to announce that 2019 will again see PLC Armidale engage in a Musical Theatre production. During the break, we were excited to learn that our application to produce the newly released amateur theatre version of Matilda the Musical was successful. Making PLC Armidale the first school or amateur theatre group in NSW to be awarded this opportunity.
NEWS
Congratulations also to Year 12 students Holly Butler, Mackenzie Constable and Frances Hebblewhite who were awarded places at the highly selective National Youth Science Forum held in Canberra during the holidays. This has become an annual fixture for PLC Armidale students with our students consistently being awarded places each year for the past five years.
A new school year affords the opportunity for a fresh start, a new resolve and new experiences to be pursued. At our Commencement Service on Wednesday, I shared with the girls our theme for 2019 - the ONE Thing. An encouragement that continued change, growth and improvement happens incrementally, but setting a goal for ONE Thing to focus on and along the way pursuing a series of smaller ONE Things which will lead them to the goal. As we continue to implement the Strategic Direction 2020 for PLC Armidale, this will be our whole school endeavour as well.
Community Open Day 2019 Our Community Open Day is only a fortnight away! We hope by now you have FRIDAY 15 FEBRUARY 4 - 8pm in your diaries. This inaugural event is a collaboration of activities and opportunities across the entire College from Junior to Senior and Co-Curricular, with support from the P&F Association, Foundation, Old Girls’ Union and wider New England Community. It is an event for the whole community to attend, not just PLC Armidale families, so bring your friends, neighbours and extended family, young and old! There will be Presentations, Providores, Performances (Music & Drama), Parades, and much much more. Come and enjoy a casual Friday night dinner at the gourmet P&F BBQ, peruse and purchase at the market stalls, listen to a Presentation from a Professional (whilst the children are entertained outside) and enjoy the vibrant musical activities. See what’s happening in our classrooms, our Boarding Houses and our Cattle yards! There will also be art and craft activities, sport activities, drama activities for the children… as well as parents! What better way to enjoy the end of Week 3, whilst we still have daylight saving time. Our P&F is organising a Night Market of small, quality businesses and providores, along with a gourmet BBQ. Should you have a business or know of a business which may be interested in attending please contact the Night Market Co-ordinator and our P&F Secretary, Mrs Tracy Wright for an Application form on twright7@bigpond.com
PLC Armidale does not have a fete, nor a fair. Our Community Open Day will be much more than that with many Community Organisations teaming up with PLC Armidale to showcase their activities: Northern Inland Academy of Sport (NIAS), New England Conservatorium of Music (NECOM), Relay 4 Life, Fleece 2 Fashion, Tour de Rocks, just to name a few. Anna Caldwell, Head of Senior School
A big welcome back to all our PLC Armidale families and an especially warm welcome to those who are joining the College in 2019. PLC Armidale is a truly amazing place! From its’ foundation in 1887 through to the present day, the College has inspired generations of girls to immerse themselves in academic study, cultural and sporting endeavours and to express their intellectual, creative and physical ability. It was lovely to see so many families at the welcome BBQ on Tuesday evening. The girls have enjoyed their first week back at school and it has been energising to hear and see their positivity and enthusiasm for the new term and year ahead. As you wrestle with your daughter’s homework schedules, sporting and co-curricular commitments, and as we commence the new school year, remember you are not alone! Your daughter’s happiness and progress are the central reason for our existence and there are many specialist staff you can contact and with whom you can discuss any issue.
New Staff It is wonderful to welcome new staff members to our fabulous team this year: Miss Julie Flanagan, Mrs Roxanne Shumack and Mrs Sophie Westermarck.
Recognising Leadership at the College Our Commencement Assembly sets the tone for the year and it is an event where we celebrate our Year 12 Students, the leaders of our student body, with the presentation of their Year 12 badges. A mark of recognition of how far they have come and how important this year is in their educational journey at PLC Armidale. Our new Year 11 Peer Support Leaders for 2019 were also recognised and inducted during our Commencement Service. They started their duties on Wednesday morning with meeting and greeting the new Year 7 Class and helped them to settle into Senior School.
Connect@PLC Having a connection with others is the building block for developing a sense of belonging, sense of commitment, a sense of confidence and the building of trust in others. It also assists with the development of academic self-efficacy, collaborative work and team building and developing a sense of perspective. Having connections with others is vital for our happiness and wellbeing.
Year 7 Friendship Camp Our Year 7’s have had a fabulous start to the year with their Year 11 Peer Support Leaders taking them under their wing. This week saw them all undergo a full Connect orientation program and Digital Connect IT Bootcamp and next week their Connect week continues, as they will head off to Echidna Gully for Friendship camp where they will have lots of fun!

Uniform I would like to remind parents and girls of the uniform policy. The uniform guidelines can be found in the student diary and the Student Handbook, which was emailed to you all during the holidays.
To connect is to bring together, to join, to relate. We connect through communicating, networking, getting involved, engaging with others, immersing ourselves in everything that we do and interacting with others.
The only jewellery that is permitted to be worn is a wrist watch and only one pair of either gold, silver or pearl small stud earrings. No other facial jewellery is permitted and all earrings are to be worn in the ear lobe.
The start of the Year is the perfect time to establish connections at the College. This week has been our Connect Week at PLC Armidale, where everyone has connected through a variety of different activities in Pastoral Care, Guild Meetings and in class time.

It is extremely important to teach our girls that this is not just a breach of uniform but speaks about their willingness to support the standards and values of the College as a whole and take pride in their appearance. When in uniform and out in the community, they are representatives of the College and the public see the girls as PLC Armidale girls. If they respect the uniform policy it shows that they respect the standards and values of the College. We appreciate your support in this matter.
Week 10 Excursion Week Our compulsory Excursion Week is in Week 10 this term. Years 7 and 8 will be heading off to Dubbo for their STEAM focused Excursion, Year 9 will head to Camp Somerset, on the Colo River for a week of Outdoor Educational challenges and Year 10 will head to Canberra for their HSIE excursion. Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Gold Adventurous Journey, Washpool and Gibraltar Range National Parks, December 2018 The expedition component of the Award is known as the Adventurous Journey, and this hike was most certainly an Adventure! From hot dry conditions to torrential rain, taking interesting detours along the way, swimming in the river and under waterfalls, enjoying spectacular views to not being able to see two metres in front of you due to low lying cloud, and encountering the most snakes I have ever seen in twenty years of hiking! This hike had everything and was a great way to start the summer holidays. Congratulations to Ella Atkin, Charlotte Caldwell, Angel Cheung, Eleanor Harrell, Frances Hebblewhite, Sophia Huang and Grace Lehman who have all now completed their final Gold Adventurous Journeys.
GOLD! Congratulations to Gracen Moore for completing and being Awarded her Duke of Edinburgh’s International Gold Award.

Fiona Wake, Head of Junior School
I warmly welcome back students, staff and new and existing families to 2019. As we embark on another year of teaching and learning, at the fore front of our thoughts when programming and delivering lessons, is to know and understand each and every child, their interests and abilities.
2019 will see the establishment of Integrated Stage Learning environments, seeing students work on Inquiry Based units of work one day a week. To celebrate the success of this learning, our Community will be invited into our classrooms to view learning outcomes:
The beginning of the year always holds such excitement and promise, and for us it is an annual rite of passage where we reflect on learning, discuss and collaborate to establish our goals and aspirations for the coming year. This is the time of year when we determine how we will spend our time, energy, and resources in the service of our students and our projects that underpin our College’s Strategic Direction.
• Building relationship and creating a sense of belonging
The Junior School is a place where we build relationship and create a sense of belonging for all our students. Last year, a major focus was on relationships and navigating students through their social and emotional world, this we will continue to develop further in 2019. The academic success of each student is our core business, we will reflect on our practice and use student results and feedback to help guide our improvement.

Life Education
Junior School Chapel services take place each Thursday at 8:55am in the Astra Arts Centre. During these services, students listen to a Bible reading lead by Chaplain, Miss Jennifer Leahy and Assistant Chaplain, Mrs Tessa Repp, share in prayer and sing songs. Students are also recognised for their achievements by being presented with merit certificates. Parents and Friends are welcome to join these services.
The Life Education NSW Van will make its annual visit to PLC Armidale next week. Life Education offers a broad health program with a particular focus on preventative drug education. It is aimed at students in their formative years from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6. Through participation in Life Education, and in conjunction with the school’s PD/Health/PE program, opportunities are provided for children to develop a healthy respect for themselves and their bodies, self-esteem and self-awareness and skills in dealing with influences in society. These lessons are usually enjoyed by our Junior School students as they reacquaint themselves with ‘Gerald’ the Life Education Van mascot, who assists in the delivery of these important messages in a fun and informative way.
Shuttle Bus Service The afternoon Shuttle Bus service will continue from PLC to TAS each afternoon. This service is available to the PLC Armidale Junior School Students only. If you wish for your child to catch the shuttle bus please contact Mrs Young at Reception for more information. The PLC Armidale Shuttle Bus will drop students at the designated “Bus Zone” in Douglas Street near the Brown Street entrance of TAS.
Buses All buses leave from Crest Road as per usual, however there will be many changes due the amalgamation of Armidale High and Duval High during the construction of the new Super School. Only three buses will depart from the PLC Armidale Bus Shelter and depending on your daughter’s destination, they must know which bus to board and whether a change-over is necessary. Edwards Bus Service have assured the College that they will provide extra staff to monitor the bus runs during the first few weeks of term to ensure student safety and smooth bus exchanges. I will endeavour to tag each Junior School bag to indicate to all staff and to remind younger students themselves, which bus they are to take, and an alternative if they miss their bus. I will carry out Bus duty myself until the girls are comfortable and familiar with their new routine.
Leadership PLC Armidale Junior School Leadership Student Leadership is part of our school responsibility in nurturing the physical, educational, social, physical and spiritual and educational needs of our students. It involves respecting the views and opinions of students as well as assisting them to develop problem solving and decision-making skills. It also provides a focus for team building, goal setting, awareness of diversity and conflict resolution. Nomination sheets have been placed on the Notice Board in the Junior School Foyer for your daughter to nominate herself for the position of Junior School Head Prefect or Guild Captain positions for each of our four Guilds, Gregory, Wentworth, Forrest and Macquarie.

MUSIC
Australian Youth Orchestra’s National Music Camp During the holidays I was lucky enough to participate in the Australian Youth Orchestra’s National Music Camp for my fourth time! Somehow every year it manages to be more spectacular, and this year was no exception. The highlight for me was getting to play in advanced chamber music - where the best of the best at NMC are chosen to play in a public chamber concert. I played a french quintet by Cras - for flute, violin, viola, cello and harp. It was such a beautiful piece and my group played superbly together (or so I was told by Michelle Walsh), and I am so lucky to have been able to play with such incredible musicians and a part of an amazing performance! Another highlight was meeting such talented and inspiration people, making lifelong friends, and working with the conductors which is always an honour - Giordano Bellincampi from Italy and Ariel Zuckerman from Israel. A particularly memorable moment was getting to use three harps for Wagner’s prelude to the Opera Miestersingers, which was so much fun! And to finish off NMC for another year, the concert concluded with Respighi’s Pine of Rome for which there is only one word that also describes the whole camp - epic!

Student Absence or Exemption from Attendance 2019 Under the NSW Education Act, school attendance is compulsory until the age of 17. As a school, we have a Duty of Care responsibility to see that students enrolled at the College are in a regular pattern of attendance unless there are special circumstances making this difficult. To streamline our process of notifying the College when a student is absent, parents are asked to bookmark and use the online forms found on the College website:http://www.plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au/current-families/notification-of-absence If permission is being sought for a period of absence longer than five consecutive school days duration a separate form is to be used, also found on the College website:http://www.plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au/current-families/request-for-leave These online forms are received by our receptionists in the Junior and Senior school with our attendance records on Edumate adjusted accordingly. Parents are asked to use these forms to ensure that notification of absence, or requests for exemption from attendance are actioned promptly.
SPEECH AND DRAMA LESSONS for 2019 will start NEXT WEEK Please see Mrs Jan Patterson (Speech & Drama Teacher) for more details or message 0414 747735 if you have any questions.

PASTORAL CARE
Pastoral Care Events Paula Goode, Pastoral Care Coordinator
Inspiring Success in You The definition of success is different for everyone, whether it’s personal or professional we are always looking at improving in some area of our life. We all want to be successful, but not everyone is prepared to work for it. And yet, nobody got there without making some sacrifices or getting rid of obstacles in the beginning. So, let’s start the year by forming some personal habits that will help lead to success: • Have a morning routine: wake up early, have a proper breakfast, exercise, meditate, plan your day ahead, and get on with it. • Eat a balanced diet: “ Your diet is a bank account. Good food choices are good investments.” - Bethenny Frankel • Exercise regularly: exercising your body is as important as exercising your mind. Just get yourself moving. • Sleep well: it is during your sleep that your brain analyses all information given throughout the day, building connections and analysis. So, yes, sleeping will help you to be more creative. • Cultivate strong relationships: give the emotional support that anybody needs so to feel that they are doing the right thing. And the same attitude will be transferred to the classroom, making the team working much more valuable and effective. • Learn something new: successful people are curious. They love to learn new things every day, and share anything that can bring some kind of enlightenment with other people. They are explorers. They are updated with new technologies. They can talk a bit about anything and cultivate multiple interests, which also helps with networking. • Laugh often: the ability to laugh about your life is a great mark of successful people. • Read daily: Reading is a habit that many cultivate daily. Books, newspapers, magazines, and online content, they are all sources of valuable information and insights. Fiction can also help you to improve your critical thinking and boost your creativity.
• Get things done: Last but not least, successful people will have 'getting things done' as a personal habit. They feel happy with accomplishments, even if it is only about organising the garage. In other words, procrastination isn’t something that you will find very often among their personal habits. If you want to be more successful, you will need to bring your personal habits to your attention and see how they are creating the person that you are. And how they are influencing how you act towards your goals. But if you noticed that you don’t have many of the habits listed above in your life, don’t despair. Just start cultivating them now, step by step, and soon you will see things changing for you. We all need some inspiration from time to time. So, I have provided some famous inspirational quotes that I hope will help contribute to your success. “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” - Mahatma Gandhi “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” - Mark Twain “Success is about creating benefit for all and enjoying the process. If you focus on this & adopt this definition, success is yours.” - Kelly Kim “It is our choices, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” - J. K Rowling “You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.” - Albert Einstein “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” - Harriet Tubman

Top five paren+ng +ps for this year insights
25 January 2019 The start of the year is a great +me for making changes and improvements to the way you raise kids. The trouble is, our good inten+ons towards change oCen become derailed around March, and we return to our default mode of paren+ng. So, nothing much changes from year to year. At Paren+ng Ideas, we have selected the five +ps that we think will have the most posi+ve impact on kids this year. 1.Switch on your kids’ strengths Most of us have been condi+oned to focus on what kids can’t do. It’s not your fault. You were trained by teachers and parents who were adept at picking up your poor behaviours, by Michael Grose highligh+ng errors and encouraging you to eliminate your faults. There is a beKer way. The Posi+ve Psychology movement lead by US-based psychologist Dr. Mar+n Seligman showed that when we can unearth kids’ strengths we are, in effect, unlocking their true poten+al for success and happiness. Three elements come together to make a strength, and parents need to be mindful of all three: performance (being good at If you want your child or young person to be resilient enough to cope with the hardships that come his or her way, something); energy (feeling good doing it); and high use (choosing to do first. it). 4. Give kids tools to manage anxious moments
Let’s just say it upfront. We don’t have a childhood resilience problem as many teachers and professionals say, but we do have a childhood anxiety problem. A big one! And it’s mostly undetected as community understanding of anxiety is low. It’s our experience at Paren+ng Ideas that many parents are anxious and they don’t know it, and many children rou+nely experience anxiety, which goes unrecognised. Everyone feels worried from +me to +me, but these feelings pass when the stressful situa+on has passed. Anxiety occurs when these anxious feelings don’t pass, and happen for by Michael Grose no obvious reason. It’s a serious condi+on that can be managed and minimised with their right tools. Paren+ng Ideas founder Michael Grose is conduc+ng a webinar ‘Managing your child’s anxiety‘ to help parents on this challenging but important topic.
