Wish You Were Here

Playwrights Horizons is a writer’s theater dedicated to the development of contemporary American playwrights, and to the production of innovative new work. In a city rich with cultural offerings, Playwrights Horizons’ 50-year-old mission is unique; we have distinguished ourselves by a steadfast commitment to centering and advancing the voice of the playwright. It’s a mission that is always timely, and one that’s necessary in the ongoing evolution of theater in this country.

We believe that playwrights are the great storytellers of our time, offering essential contributions to civic discourse and illuminating life’s greatest paradoxes. And we believe in the singularity of a writer’s voice, valuing the broad, eclectic spectrum and diversity of American writers. Here, writers are supported in every stage of their growth through our New Works Lab, POP Master Class series, Soundstage audio program, the Lighthouse Project, and Almanac, our digital magazine.

We present a season of productions annually on our two stages, each of which is a world, American, or New York premiere. Much like our work, our audience is risk-taking and adventurous; and we’re committed to strengthening their engagement and feeding their curiosity through all of our programming, onsite and online.

Playwrights Horizons Theater School We are also an undergraduate theater program that offers an innovative four-year multidisciplinary training program that is consistently ranked as one of the best undergraduate training studios in the country.

Recognizing the diverse needs and ambitions of the 21st century theater artist, Playwrights Horizons Theater School is the only undergraduate studio training actors, directors, designers, choreographers, playwrights, and creators of devised work in a single setting at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Our collaborative program is dedicated to the principle that each student is a whole artist to be nurtured, challenged, and celebrated.

Our Commitment Playwrights Horizons commits to anti-racism in building a more just future for everyone — particularly those from historically oppressed communities, including the Lenape nation, whose land is home to our work. We acknowledge that the U.S. theater is born of a country founded on white supremacy and anti-Blackness, and we are dedicated to uprooting these and all systems of oppression. This work is ongoing and benefits our programming, staff, audiences, faculty, students, board, donors, and partners. We invite you to engage in this with us. As we expand the U.S. theater canon, we aim to make Playwrights Horizons a theater that is an anti-racist center of ideas, dialogue, curiosity, and a liberated imagination.

Our Conviction We are a home for the American writer. It is expressed in our very name: we are Playwrights.

From the Playwright: Sanaz Toossi I was once asked why the women of Wish You Were Here sound so American. “Girls will be girls,” I responded, a smile pasted across my face. As the words came out of my mouth, I knew I hated them. I hate them now. Here is my chance to rectify that statement.

The women of this play speak in an American argot because that is how I have translated them. These characters are actually speaking Farsi, but you get it.

It’s theater.

But I suspect the question was actually this: “Why are they talking about their bodies? Why are they talking about sex?” I believe the question behind the question was, “Why do these women sound so free?”

I want to tell you now that these girls do not sound like you. You sound like them.

The Iranian women who raised me could cut you like glass then sew you up in the same sentence. There was so much talk about bodies. Everyone’s bodies. No one’s body was their own. Nothing was just yours.

Everything was everyone’s because those women belonged to each other.

When I think about the women who inspired this play, I hear obnoxious, cacophonous laughter. The decrescendo of that laughter is the central loss of this play. But it does not define the play. These women do not need your pity, nor do they want it.

But they demand to be seen in their full humanity, as do all refugees, immigrants, and almost-migrants, no matter what part of the world they’re from. People everywhere — beautifully, tragically, obviously — strive for normalcy.

I wonder what a humanity play is. What does it mean to show a people in their humanity? Is that setting the bar extremely low? Or extremely high? Is every good play a humanity play? Is every play about humanity? And what makes a play political?

Who We Are

Doesn’t every play exist within a set of politics? Must a play be political if the events of the play are affected by the politics of the play’s setting? Isn’t every play political? I can’t decide.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter to me. I wrote this play as a love letter to my mother. I wrote it as a daughter of an immigrant. I wrote it because I’m proud of her, because I wanted her to know that every contour of her story was real to me, that I know her. I know you. And I feel like I knew you then. I love you and everyone who loved you.

I don’t care about breaking form. Or structure. I don’t care about being provocative or adding to the canon. Not with this play. This play is for you and you only. I think we would have been friends then, the time at which I’ve set this story. I would have been lucky to be your friend.

Your laugh is so loud. I wanted to hear it onstage the way I’ve known it in life — its ring ricocheting throughout the room, warming everything it touches.

SANAZ TOOSSI (Playwright). Playwrights debut. Sanaz is an Iranian-American playwright from Orange County, California.

Her plays include Wish You Were Here (Williamstown Audible 2020, Stavis Award) and English (Atlantic/Roundabout 2022, Weissberger New Play Award, Kilroys’ List 2019). She is currently under commission at the Atlantic, Williamstown Theatre Festival, MTC, South Coast Repertory, IAMA Theatre, and Oregon Shakespeare Festival (American Revolutions Cycle).

Sanaz is a member of Youngblood and the Middle Eastern American Writers Lab and was the 2019 P73 Playwriting Fellow.

She has directed several world premieres including Clare Lizzimore’s Animal (Atlantic and Studio Theatre), Lauren Gunderson’s Half-Life of Marie Curie (Audible at Minetta Lane), Anna Ziegler’s The Last Match (Old Globe), Melissa Ross’s Of Good Stock (South Coast Rep), Laura Marks’s Bethany (WP Theater).

BRANDON TERZIC (Original Music).

Playwrights debut. Brandon is a multiinstrumentalist who has performed with everyone from jazz legend Henry Threadgill to the rising Sudanese star Alsarah. He has performed internationally at prestigious festivals such as WOMAD, Glastenbury,Roskilde, and many others all over the EU and Africa. He has also taught extensively, both privately and conducting workshops at various schools and institutions such as the Asia Society in NYC, Duke University, Johnson State College, Baltimore Arts council, UCLA, USC, and multiple public schools in the NYC metropolitan area. He has released two albums of his own, “Xalam Project,” and “Western skies Eastern Dreams.”

FIMA CHUPAKHIN (Musical Arrangements).

Playwrights debut. Fima was born in Krivoy Rog, an industrial city in the East part of Ukraine. He formed his own jazz project “Acoustic Quartet,” with whom he recorded three albums. He has gained the reputation of being a prolific crossgenre keyboardist, as he had participated in the recording of 15 crossover albums.

He also has been extensively touring with “AQ” and with the famous Ukrainian pop/ rock artists in Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, Georgia, Israel, Russia, and Belarus. He has been awarded the world prestigious Fulbright Scholarship and holds two masters degrees in Jazz Studies from William Paterson University and Kharkiv State University of Arts (Ukraine).

PLAYWRIGHTS HORIZONS is dedicated to cultivating the most important American playwrights, composers, and lyricists, as well as developing and producing their bold new plays and musicals. Adam Greenfield became Artistic Director in 2020; Leslie Marcus has served as Managing Director since 1993. As it enters its 51st season, Playwrights builds upon its diverse and renowned body of work, counting 400 writers among its artistic roster. In addition to its onstage work each season, Playwrights’ singular commitment to nurturing American theater artists guides all of the institution’s multifaceted initiatives: our acclaimed New Works Lab, a robust commissioning program, an innovative curriculum at its Theater School, and more. Robert Moss founded Playwrights in 1971 and cemented the mission that continues to guide the institution today. André Bishop served as Artistic Director from 1981–1992. Don Scardino succeeded him and served until 1996. Tim Sanford, the organization’s longest-serving Artistic Director, held the position from 1996-2020. Over its 50-year history, Playwrights has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including seven Pulitzer Prizes, 13 Tony Awards, and 47 Obie Awards.
