In schools, sports fields and playgrounds across New Zealand, we assess, design and install a wide range of surfaces and playground accessories as part of our work, providing the very best in play landscapes.

In this portfolio we showcase some of this work with the hope that it provides you with some fresh ideas to inspire and excite you about your next play surface project.

Elmgrove School

Elmgrove School set out to develop the area at the front of their school into an inviting and fun space for the school community. Initially, the space was a blank grass area that became very muddy and unusable during the winter months. They wanted to use a combination of rubber surfacing, artificial grass, and rubber mulch to tidy up the muddy areas and add some colour. The MulchSet and PermaPlay surfaces work together to give a natural look and the Pour’n’Play creates bright pops of colour incorporating leaf patterns that tie in with the Elm trees.

Remuera Primary School

Remuera Primary School found themselves with an uninviting dark and often-times muddy space between buildings so they set out to create a brighter, tidy area, that the children could enjoy.

They took full advantage of the capabilities of Numat’s Pour’n’Play rubber surfacing, which transformed the space by creating an adaptable play area for all sorts of activities.

Green Bay Primary set out to replace its old playspace with bright and unique surfacing that showcased the story of the environment in which they are set. A representative river runs through the play space, with a boat-shaped deck alluding to the historical journey of the local Maori along the Whau River. Sand-like mounds, created using Numat’s Pour’n’Play surfacing, add a another playful element to the space that allows the students to incorporate climbing and jumping into their play.

Blomfield Special School identified Numat Pour’n’Play as an ideal surfacing option to help transform their playground into something truly unique. The school created a fantastic design that included roads, paths, balance balls, mounds, numbers and shapes and colours, all working together to stimulate and engage students during their play time. Due to its versatility, Numat’s Pour’n’Play was the perfect fit. Its bright colours have brought the playground to life and ensured a space that is safe, engaging and fun.

/ SUSTAINABLE SURFACING: THE RUBBER SHOCK PAD LAYER IN NUMAT SURFACING COMES FROM RECYCLED TYRES

Tirimoana School was looking to replace the bark in the safety fall area in their senior playground with a product that was durable, low maintenance, safe for children, and aesthetically pleasing. Numat’s MulchSet was used to create a natural look, without the mess that comes with loose-fill surfacing. The MulchSet is carried up towards the trees, covering the potential mud areas while also providing a comfortable, clean surface for the students to gather and sit around. The play area surfacing also features a pop of colour using Pour’n’Play safety surfacing.

St Andrew’s College, Junior Centre

Location: Christchurch

Cost: Approx $150,000 + GST

When St Andrew’s College were designing the Stewart Junior Centre, they were looking for “Wow factor”. To achieve this, they hired landscape architects, Jasmax, who came up with a design based on the idea of birds leaving the nest. A high “crows nest” play structure was installed in the junior school area. Lead designer, Adrian Taylor, had high praise for Pour’n’Play’s versatility. “As a designer, having that flexibility is absolutely optimum because you can design to your heart’s content knowing that you’ve got a product that can execute it as intended.”

Willow Park Primary School

Willow Park School wanted a colourful play space where students could run about and play games, especially during wet weather periods when grass areas were closed. To achieve this, Numat installed Pour‘n’Play, PermaTurf and MulchSet surfacing. The area has been a tremendous success with the fast-draining surfacing providing an allyear-round, all-weather play surface.
