Good playground surfacing doesn’t just take the ‘ouch’ out of ‘oops’. It instigates play, encourages exploration and inspires imagination. It protects, challenges and grows. And, ultimately, it ensures safe, happy and thriving children.
In playgrounds across New Zealand, we assess, design and install a wide range of surfaces and playground accessories as part of our work, providing the very best in play landscapes.
In this portfolio we showcase some of this work with the hope that it provides you with some fresh ideas to inspire and excite you about your next play surface project.

Numat were called in to do the safety surfacing for the newly developed Cornwall Park Playground in Hastings. Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the playground has an oak leaves and acorns theme. This gave us the perfect opportunity to showcase Pour’n’Play’s design capabilities by creating a river with coloured leaves throughout the space.
Always a favourite spot for the local community, it’s now a leading destination playground.

Kopupaka Reserve playground in Westgate, Auckland was the 2021, New Zealand Parks Awards, Playground of the Year. The playground ‘wowed’ judges with its mission to prevent emissions and support local climate change, as well as its vibrant colour and edible plantings.
Numat’s Pour‘n’Play surfacing was used throughout the playground. It was chosen for its colour range and moldability which enabled the creation of long, playful ‘strawberry’ mounds in the surface, a nod to the site’s history as a strawberry field. Numat’s Pour‘n’Play spheres were also used in the project to create colourful ‘berries’.

In 2021, Numat worked with the Queenstown Lakes District Council and playground design company, Creo, to upgrade Wanaka’s Rotary Park Playground.
The surface design called for blues, greens, and greys to match the parks surroundings. With its excellent colour range, Pour’n’Play was the perfect product for this project. As well as being used in the surface, it was used to create realistic rubber rocks, and a range of balls and steppers in various sizes. These elements add multiple sensory dimensions and challenge to the playground allowing users of all ages to get creative in their play.

Margaret Mahy Family Park is one of New Zealand’s premier destination playgrounds. Inspired by the muchloved children’s author Margaret Mahy, this playground was built as part of the Christchurch post-quake rebuild.
The surfacing of this project included multiple colours, patterns, mound coverings and marking details. This project really showcases our Pour’n’Play rubber surfacing capabilities. Nearly six years on, the surfacing still looks as good as new.

In 2021, Numat worked with playground design firm, Creo, and the Wellington City Council to upgrade the Karori Park Playground. The old playground had many access points that made it difficult for spaces to flow together cohesively.
Numat’s Pour’n’Play and PermaPlay surfaces were used to create clear boundaries and colourful safety zones around equipment, adding vibrancy and fun to the new playground.

When Numat installed playground surfacing at Auckland’s Pahurehure Reserve playground it was a slightly different project to most. That was because of the product they were installing – MulchSet. Like Pour’n’Play, MulchSet is a duallayer, wet pour rubber surface, but instead of a granule top, it has the appearance of wood chip. The product was installed on a large mound beside real bark chip. Interestingly, the difference between the real bark and the rubber alternative is barely noticeable. Check it out online: numat.co.nz/pahurehure-reserve

The ambitious design of Royal Reserve Playground gave Numat the perfect opportunity to showcase the strong design capability of Pour‘n’Play.
The area is laid out in three distinct areas - one for young children, another for school-age children, and another area for a big hillside slide which is a major feature of the park.
The big slide required surfacing on either side and was designed to incorporate a Sun, Sky, and Forest theme. The theme was conveyed in words and coloured layers of Pour‘n’Play surfacing.

The Auckland City Council brought Numat on-board to install surfacing at Tahi Beachwood playground in late 2020.
To keep costs down, Numat used a combination of surfaces including our long-lasting MulchSet and the more affordable TopChip surfacing. The combination of these two products provides the benefits of making the playground more accessible to children with physical disabilities and lowering the maintenance required to ensure the integrity of the safety surfaces.
