Play surface inspiration from around New Zealand
Thank you for taking the time to check out our ECE Surfacing Portfolio.
Good playground surfacing doesn’t just take the ‘ouch’ out of ‘oops’. It instigates play, encourages exploration and inspires imagination. It protects, challenges and grows. And, ultimately, it ensures safe, happy and thriving children.
In playgrounds across New Zealand, we assess, design and install a wide range of surfaces and playground accessories as part of our work, providing the very best in play landscapes.
In this portfolio we showcase some of this work with the hope that it provides you with some fresh ideas to inspire and excite you about your next play surface project.

The installation at Just Kidz Kelston was different from most early learning surfacing projects because it was located on the first and second floors. It required some outside the box thinking but we were able to finish it on time and budget. The installation features a Pour’n’Play bike path, PermaPlay turf play pads, Pour’n’Play rubber rocks, and our unique half-sphere steppers.

For Community Kids Clendon it was important to create an open and inviting outdoor space that could be used for various play and learning activities. A central island feature was added to the space using Pour’n’Play this is surrounded by a cushioned turf area and blue bike loop. These surfacing elements together create opportunities for robust and open ended play.

Kidspace were looking to improve flow, visibility and reduce noise at their centre. To do this, they settled on a design that called for new surfacing throughout the site. Numat were brought in to provide the surfacing which was a mixture of Pour‘n’Play and PermaPlay.
The new surfacing not only helped solve the flow and supervision issues, but also provided a playable surface where children could initiate their own play challenges.

Young World’s outdoor space presented a challenge for the Numat team. Being laid out over two levels meant creating a large slope to connect the upper and lower spaces. The slope was surfaced with Numat’s Pour‘n’Play dual-pour surfacing – the safety surface allowing for the inclusion of an in-ground slide, rope climb, and rock climbing grips. On the lower level, PermaPlay surfacing was used to create an open, flexible play area.

The playspace at Just Kidz Albany was an ambitious project from the beginning. This was because it was surrounded on three sides by large buildings. This presented a real challenge for the centre owners who wanted to create a warm and inviting space. Fortunately, Numat were able to help. With the addition of natural coloured surfacing and good use of artificial turf, a bright and playful outdoor area was established.

Equippers Early Childhood Centre had a striking vision for their new centre - one based on stories from the Bible. Upon entering the centre’s grounds, the visitor is presented with a Pour‘n’Play whale, with fully functional waterspout. Continuing into the space, there are soft artificial turf areas and as well as an Ark set in Pour‘n’Play surfacing. The centre owners couldn’t be happier with their playground, stating, “We’ve been able to present a World-class playspace that kids are just going to enjoy for many years.”

When St Andrew’s College were designing the Stewart Junior Centre, they were looking for “Wow factor”. To achieve this, they hired landscape architects, Jasmax, who came up with a design based on the idea of birds leaving the nest. Lead designer, Adrian Taylor, had high praise for Pour’n’Play’s versatility. “As a designer, having that flexibility is absolutely optimum because you can design to your heart’s content knowing that you’ve got a product that can execute it as intended.”
