Story Telling.

Playgrounds are spaces to learn, to have fun, to create incredible stories for children. And storytelling has the power to turn these spaces into magical realms of imagination. By using human-centred design, playgrounds can become more than just areas for physical activity. They can tell stories that are meaningful to children.

By including cultural wonders and local folklore, playgrounds can become places that enrich communities and foster inclusion. Storytelling brings play areas to life and connects children from different backgrounds.

Imaginative playground narratives inspire children to explore, learn, and develop. These well-designed spaces have the potential to create cherished memories and bring young hearts together in shared joy and wonder.

Our goal at Creo is to design and construct playgrounds with a purpose beyond mere entertainment. We aim to create play spaces that tell a story and are culturally significant, such as natural wildlife or local folklore themed playgrounds. We also strive to bring people’s imaginative stories to life through our designed play spaces that spark positive change.

Inclusivity.

Playgrounds are a place where joy knows no boundaries – a space where children of all abilities and ages can come together to play and have fun. To achieve this inclusivity, playground design has evolved to embrace a myriad of ways and forms of play that cater to diverse users.

However, creating an inclusive play space goes beyond mere accessibility adjustments or removing challenges. It necessitates collaborative efforts with the community, involving parents, developers, and, most importantly, the children themselves. Engaging all stakeholders ensures that the design truly reflects the needs and desires of those who will use the space.

Research papers support the significance of inclusive playgrounds. According to studies, inclusive play environments foster social interaction and empathy among children with and without disabilities. These spaces promote understanding and acceptance, nurturing an environment of inclusion that extends beyond the playground’s boundaries.

At Creo, we emphasize the importance of collaboration. Working closely with designers, clients, and the community, we strive to ensure that our playgrounds offer a blend of challenges and opportunities for all abilities to play and have fun together. By harnessing the power of collective creativity, we envision a world where play knows no barriers, and inclusivity becomes the cornerstone of every playground design.

Play Value.

Play Value is a simple but powerful idea that can make playgrounds exciting and meaningful places for kids. It’s all about designing playgrounds and equipment that offer many ways to play, can be used by many kids simultaneously, and appeal to various ages and abilities.

Imagine a climbing frame. One child might see it as a mountain to conquer, while another might see it as a castle. This one piece of equipment offers many ways to play, making it valuable and fun for different kids.

With unprescribed play, the more options you give children, the more value you are adding to a space.

Playground equipment that lets many kids play together, like a giant swing or seesaw, helps them learn essential skills like sharing and working together. They’re having fun but also learning how to be good friends and team members.

It’s also essential that playgrounds have something for everyone. A child just starting to explore will want different challenges from an older kid ready for adventure. Equipment that can be used differently means that all children, regardless of age or ability, can have a great time.

Play Value is about creating playgrounds that are full of possibility and excitement. We believe that every playground is a community of discovery. Every piece of equipment is a chance for fun, learning, and friendship. By focusing on the many ways kids can play and the opportunities to play together, playgrounds can become places where every child can find joy and growth. That’s the actual value of play!

They’re learning while they’re at it, such as counting or creating imaginative ways to “fly”. It’s a confidence builder, too - there’s no wrong way to bounce!

Did you know? Creo rubberrecycles into its playground surfaces! A first in New Zealand!

We take rubber out of old playground surfaces, process it at our Numat recycling plant, then put it back into playground surfaces.

for processing at the Numat rubber recycling facility. There, it is put through a granulating process that converts it from being a waste product into usable rubber granules.

Rubber is ground into small pieces.

The process of creating playground surfaces from waste rubber begins with waste rubber being collected from program partners and taken

This waste rubber would otherwise end up in landfills. But, in this recycling program, it is transformed into durable, safe, and accessible playground surfaces.

Smaller rubber pieces are then granulated to a final size.

Granules are bagged and ready for playground surfacing.

Making a Significant Impact on the Environment.

With capacity to process 15 tonnes of waste rubber per week, the recycling program has the potential to reduce imported rubber and waste rubber going into landfills by up to 780 tonnes per year.

Partnering to Create Sustainable Playgrounds.

That’s the equivalent of 866 skip bins full of rubber waste per year.

This initiative is a significant step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future for New Zealand’s playgrounds.

The First Major Project: CPlay Destination Playground in Timaru.

As a program partner, Creo uses the recycled rubber granules in its playground surfaces. The soft rubber makes the perfect baselayer in our wet poured rubber surfaces, providing excellent impact absorption.

The surfaces created using the recycled material are highly durable and can last up to 20 years. At end of life, they can be recycled again using the same process!

The CPlay destination playground in Timaru is the first major project to use this recycled material. The work is scheduled to start in July of 2023, and we are excited to see the positive impact it will have on the local community.
