Dear Friends, "My object is not to establish that I was right, but to find out if I am."

–Galileo Galilei, Scene 8 Brecht completed The Life of Galileo in 1938, just as Hitler cemented his grip on the German state. Yet the play was never static. Over nearly twenty years, he produced three drafts, each in taught conversation with the socio-political situation he lived in. Two years ago, as President Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord, I was struck by a chilling thought: if Brecht were alive today, he'd have good reason to revisit his masterpiece once more. What a great opportunity then, to get to do what theatre artists do best: to resurrect, reexamine, and revitalize this timeless piece for our present day.

It is true that the play reverberates with contemporary resonances—from the denial of truth to backroom politics—but it is Galileo's relentless curiosity that has been my lodestar throughout this process. We follow his example in constant pursuit of the truth, letting the spirit of genuine inquiry lead us out of our comfort zones and into new and dangerous territory.

I was supremely lucky to assemble a team of crackerjack storytellers to join me—a creative team more interested in what they don't know than what they’ve already figured out. And New York based actor Ron Menzel has led our acting company with the same charge, digging into the role of Galileo with an appetite and curiosity worthy of the complicated icon he portrays.

It’s an understatement to say that I’ve been humbled and inspired by our entire company, on stage and off, as they’ve leapt into the unknown with enthusiasm and aplomb. And the question I’ve carried into selecting our just-announced 2019/20 season, Legacy | NOW, is how do we bring the same spirit of relentless inquiry into everything we do here at PlayMakers? How can we open ourselves beyond what we already know, or "how things have always been," and remain steadfast bridesmaids to truth and justice? Groundbreaking plays like Native Son, Ragtime, and Julius Caesar will certainly have a lot to say on this subject, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring them to you next season.

I can't say I know exactly how it will all turn out, but after this exacting, exciting, and inspiring process working on Life of Galileo, I can tell you this: I tolerate our uncertainty more than ever before as an essential pathway to art and discovery.

AMY & KEVIN GUSKIEWICZ

Amy and Kevin Guskiewicz have called Chapel Hill home for more than 20 years. Amy, who grew up casually participating in theatre throughout middle and high school in Maryland, is a real estate agent with Fonville Morisey and enjoys sharing with others her love of Chapel Hill. Prior to her career as a realtor, Amy taught elementary school and once had the pleasure of directing her class of 3rd–5th graders in a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the Forest Theatre.

Kevin is the Kenan Distinguished Professor of Exercise and Sports Medicine, Athletic Trainer, and founding director of the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he has served on faculty since 1995. Over the past 25 years, his research has helped sports medicine clinicians to improve diagnosis and management of sport-related concussions. In 2016, Kevin was appointed Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at UNC-CH, and in 2019 was named interim chancellor. Amy and Kevin have four children: Jacob, Nathan, Adam, and Tessa.

Amy and Kevin often enjoy a short walk through Battle Park from their Franklin Street home to the Joan H. Gillings Center for Dramatic Art for an evening of theatre. They have been actively involved with PlayMakers for the past few years as subscribers and supporters of our annual gala. Amy also serves as a member of the PlayMakers Advisory Council and is a founding member of the PlayMakers women’s leadership council, WPOV (Women’s Point of View). This year, Amy is excited to take on a new leadership role as Vice Chair of the Advisory Council.

“We give to PlayMakers because it is a place that our family enjoys gathering to see how theatre brings together students, faculty, staff, and the community in a meaningful way,” says Amy. PlayMakers produces ten shows on two stages each year in our home venue, the Joan H. Gillings Center for Dramatic Art bringing the transformative power of theatre to up to 50,000 audience members annually from over 50 counties. Creating Tomorrow’s Classics, Today Producing Artistic Director Vivienne Benesch is continuing PlayMakers’ tradition of producing vibrantly reimagined classics, large-scale musical theatre and significant contemporary work, but is also broadening the company’s reach to become a home for new play development and a true hub of social and civic discourse in the region. Her first three seasons have already given life to six important new American plays.

Provoking Conversation Our hugely popular PRC2 series is programmed to provoke thought, stimulate discussion, and push the boundaries of the theatrical form. Theatre for the People PlayMakers Mobile is an initiative that seeks to positively contribute to the civic and social life of our region by taking world-class theatre out of our building and into the community. We create astreamlined production of one classic play each year and take it to Title-1 schools, homeless shelters, and treatment facilities around the Greater Triangle area. It’s all free of charge, since too often the people who can benefit from theatre the most are the ones who don’t have access to it.

Passing the Torch PlayMakers’ award-winning Summer Youth Conservatory is the only professionally-supported training program of its kind in the region. The Theatre Quest program provides classes to area middle school students, while the Theatre Intensive and Theatre Tech programs allow Triangle high-schoolers to apprentice directly with professional directors, choreographers, musical directors, and technicians, culminating in a professional-quality production on the PlayMakers mainstage for the whole community to enjoy.

PROGRAM NOTES Bertolt Brecht's Galileo Galilei

By Adam Versenyi The lifetime of Galileo Galilei, the subject of Bertolt Brecht’s Life of Galileo, spanned the divide between the major European intellectual traditions of the Renaissance and modern nationalism.

Born in Pisa, Italy in 1564, three days before Michelangelo’s death and about two months before Shakespeare’s birth, he died in Arcetri, near Florence, in 1642, somewhat less than a year before Newton was born. If Michelangelo’s artistry can be seen as marking the end of the Italian Renaissance, Shakespeare’s plays and poetry initiating an important period in English culture, and Newton’s work as starting modern scientific and technological innovation, Galileo lived in a turbulent time, not unlike our own, when the moral, religious, and social fabric was in transition and experiencing profound crises. Europeans had recently “discovered” both Asia and the Americas, and the Protestant Reformation had shaken the foundations of European nations themselves. The Catholic Church felt itself losing its authority and prestige, and Europe as a whole lost its feeling of centrality to human affairs.

In 1610 Duke Cosimo II de' Medici invited Galileo to join his court in Florence as Philosopher and Mathematician to the young Duke. Florence was a leading center of commerce, learning and the arts from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries. Under the Medici family it was the prosperous central hub of the Renaissance offering patronage to artists such as Giotto, Masaccio, Donatello, Ghiberti, Brunelleschi, and Alberti; where Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio used their writings to turn the Tuscan dialect into an all-Italian language, and where Machiavelli created his notion of the modern nation-state.

Other characters central to Brecht’s Life of Galileo, such as the Cardinals Bellarmine and Barberini, are also drawn from this historical period. By 1597 the Professor of

Theology Cardinal Bellarmine had become the Catholic Church’s foremost authority in the analysis and persecution of heresies, particularly those posed

by Protestantism. Bellarmine was intimately involved in the trial that led to the death by immolation of Giordano Bruno ten years before Brecht’s play begins. Cardinal Barberini, a mathematician himself, was invested as Pope Urban VIII in 1623. His sympathy towards Cardinal Richelieu and the French created tensions between Spain and the Church, and Barberini’s desire to extend Church rule throughout the Italian states added to the tensions that existed already between the Barberini family and other Italian ruling families, including the Medici. This led to a war between the Papal States and a league of Italian states including Tuscany between 1642-1644. It was in the midst of all of this that Galileo published his Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, whose publication led to his trial and condemnation by the Inquisition.

Even after Galileo’s conviction, condemnation, and recantation the Catholic Church continued to make use of his scientific theories, and there is a good case to be made that what the Inquisition could not tolerate in the cases of both Bruno and Galileo was not so much their insistence upon the Copernican theory of heliocentric planetary motion, but that Copernicus, Bruno, and Galileo all employed the ancient Greek Pythagoras’ cosmology as a basis for their own scientific theories.

Pythagoras was born on the Greek island of Samos around 570 BCE, lived in southern Italy, and died around five hundred years before Christ’s birth. While he is known today for the Pythagorean geometric theorem, there is actually no evidence that he created it. Both in ancient times and to the Catholic Church of Galileo’s time, Pythagoras was known as a philosopher and religious leader.

Galileo’s discoveries by means of his telescope that the moon has mountains and valleys, that Jupiter has four moons, the Milky Way is made of innumerable stars, and that Venus has phases, all sounded to the Inquisition as if they confirmed Pythagoras’ heretical pagan contentions that there are other worlds, and that human beings on Earth are not God’s unique creation. When Galileo further argued that the Bible is not literally true, and claimed that philosophers and mathematicians, as experts on nature, should have the right to determine the true meaning of scriptures that are not necessary for salvation, his pleas that God did not mean for us to abandon rationality were seen as a direct challenge to papal infallibility, and to the Church’s rightful position as the interpreter of Christian faith.

This, then, is the historical and cultural background Brecht draws upon for Life of Galileo. What does he do with it? Many have pointed out that Brecht alters aspects of Galileo’s biography and gets the history of science wrong. As George Lukács has written, where playwrights and novelists depart from the facts of history, they present the larger forces of history. Historical plays are inherently ahistorical since their life is dependent upon their relevance to the playwright’s own time and, hopefully, all future times. Brecht’s interest in the historical Galileo arises when he is already in exile from Germany, having fled the Nazis, and finds himself preoccupied with those who somehow manage to remain in Germany and work to subvert Hitler’s regime. Brecht writes three versions of Life of Galileo. The first version, with its central line “Take care when you travel through Germany with the truth under your coat!” is propaganda for thinking regardless of the context you live in. The second version, co-written with the actor Charles Laughton in Hollywood, and performed briefly both in Los Angeles and New York, portrays a Galileo of insatiable appetite for both knowledge and

sensual satisfaction. The third version, written after the explosion of the atom bomb in the 1940s, and upon which PlayMakers production is based, draws a direct line between Galileo’s physics and the atom bomb, and dissents from the idea of “pure” scientific research to demand that scientists themselves work with a sense of social responsibility and avoid becoming subject to the machinations of those power by working to ease human existence.

One of Brecht’s favorite pieces of reading was an essay by Mao on contradiction.

And, like so many of his plays, Life of Galileo challenges us to confront the play’s issues by creating a series of contradictions in the play’s action revolving around oppositions such as passivity vs. activity, cowardice vs. courage, and slyness vs. boldness. Brecht’s Galileo’s two main sins against the Church are to publish in vernacular Italian rather than Latin, thus giving the populace access to knowledge, and to deny the validity or primacy of heroes or the authority of religious icons, thereby thrusting the responsibility for progress and change into the hands of the masses.

Brecht rewrote and remounted his major plays several times, constantly making changes designed to stress the plays’ relevance to the time in which they were 20 produced. PlayMakers’ production of Life of Galileo asks what Brecht would do

with his play were he alive today? Set in a seed bank where Galileo’s story is one of many that have been stored for the benefit of future generations, workers stumble upon the Galileo file and bring it to life as a means by which to comprehend the world we live in now. Like Galileo in his time, we in Chapel Hill live in a period of turmoil, locally, nationally, and internationally. The breakdown of hierarchical and patriarchal social structures, a more complicated understanding of gender and identity, and the economic rise of nations once seen as backwaters, have all led to the coming to power of a series of autocratic regimes from Hungary to Brazil to the United States, among others, that rightly see the centrality of certain worldviews threatened and, like the Inquisition did with religious heresies, seek to stamp out secular heresies and return us to a mythical golden age. In surveying our contemporary world Brecht might focus on the way our age proliferates information but frequently denigrates knowledge, on how scientific investigation confirms global warming while we continue blithely burning fossil fuels, and how multinational corporations profit off of the destruction of the human beings that generate those profits. Yet, while using his theatre to focus upon and expose these contradictions, Brecht, as he does in Life of Galileo, would also stress our humanity and the human being’s capacity for hope and ability to build a better future. Working on a new production of Life of Galileo with the members of the Berliner Ensemble just before his death in 1956 Brecht said, “In spite of all, Galileo is a hero. In spite of all, he becomes a criminal.” Now, in true Brechtian fashion, join us in determining whether or not that is so.

OUR CO-PRODUCER Raised in the land of espresso bars and local roasters, Larry grew up with love for coffee and an appreciation for the nuances that make one cup more interesting than another. He moved to the Southeast for graduate school but soon got sidetracked by his own obsession with coffee, working as a roaster in Raleigh’s first coffeehouse, then starting his own coffeehouse and roastery. From the start he was all about taking time with his roast and treating blends like his own drinkable art form. He wasn’t just about good coffee; he was about unique coffee.

Larry also took part in a delegation to visit fair trade farmers in Chiapas, Mexico, where the quiet courage and deep dignity of the farmers made a life-changing impression on him. He came away with the realization that fair trade was “more than a way to get amazing coffee, it was about creating a new business model, where everyone gets what they want and no one is exploited along the way.” So he led Larry’s Coffee to become a founding member of Cooperative Coffees, the first (and still the only U.S.) cooperative of Independent roasters exporting fair trade beans directly from farmers.

AUTHOR BIO Bertolt Brecht Playwright

Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) was born in Augsberg, Germany.

In 1918 while studying medicine at Munich University he was called up for military service as a medical orderly. His early poems and his first play Baal (1918) reflect his experience with the horrors of war. After the war Brecht became part of the burgeoning artistic milieu in Munich and Berlin as a critic and a playwright, producing his plays Drums in the Night (1922), and Edward II (1924), and working as dramaturg for the directors Max Reinhardt and Erwin Piscator. In 1928 Brecht joined forces with the composer Kurt Weill to write The Threepenny Opera (1928) and The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagony (1930). With the rise of the Nazis in the early 1930s Brecht went into exile in 1933, first in Scandinavia, then in the United States where he worked mainly in Hollywood. In 1947 he was subpoenaed to appear before the House Committee on Un-American Activities where he gave testimony with a plane ticket to Zurich for the next day in his pocket. He returned to what had now become East Germany, founding the Berliner Ensemble in East Berlin in 1949. While in exile he co-wrote the second version of Life of Galileo with Charles Laughton (1945-1946), and his other major plays Mother Courage and Her Children (1941), The Good Person of Szechuan (1943), and began writing The Caucasian Chalk Circle (1948) and Herr Puntila and His Man Matti (1948). Brecht died in 1956 while directing a new production of Life of Galileo for the Berliner Ensemble. Over the course of his career he wrote numerous theoretical essays about the nature of the theatre becoming, along with Konstantin Stanislavski and Antonin Artaud, one of the most influential voices in twentieth-century theatre practice.

CREATIVE TEAM Vivienne Benesch Life of Galileo Director PlayMakers Producting Artistic Director

Vivienne is in her third season as a company member and PlayMakers’ Producing Artistic Director. For 12 seasons, she served as Artistic Director of the renowned Chautauqua Theater Company and Conservatory, presiding over the company’s transformation into one of the best summer theatres and most competitive summer training programs in the country. She directed over fifteen productions at CTC including an acclaimed re-imagining of Romeo and Juliet featuring the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, Theatre, Opera and Dance companies. She brought CTC’s production of Amadeus, performed with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra and Buffalo Philharmonic, to the Virginia Arts Festival featuring PlayMakers company member Ray Dooley. She has helmed productions of Leaving Eden, Mr. Joy, The May Queen, Three Sisters, Love Alone, RED and In The Next Room for PlayMakers, the world premiere of Noah Haidel’s Birthday Candles for Detroit Public Theatre, directed extensively for The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, and directed The Heidi Chronicles for Trinity Repertory Company. As an actress, Vivienne has worked on and offBroadway, in film and television, and at many of the country’s most celebrated theatres. She has appeared with Gene Wilder, Al Pacino and Blythe Danner, performed with Maggie Smith in the London revival of Edward Albee’s The Lady from Dubuque, and received an OBIE Award for her performance in Lee Blessing’s Going to St. Ives. Vivienne is a graduate of Brown University and NYU’s Graduate Acting Program. As an educator, she has directed for and served on the faculty of some of the nation’s foremost actor training programs, including The Juilliard School, UNC-Chapel Hill’s Professional Actor Training Program, Brown/Trinity Rep MFA Program and at her alma mater, NYU’s Graduate Acting Program. Vivienne also holds a BA from Brown University.

She is the 2017 recipient of the Zelda Finchandler Award given by the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation.

Tracy Bersley Choreographer

PlayMakers: Movement coach and resident choreographer in her third season.

As director/choreographer, Tracy Bersley has worked at such institutions as Lincoln Center, The Public Theater, BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), The Lortel Theatre, Primary Stages, McCarter Theatre, Williamstown Theatre Festival and many award winning Off-Broadway companies, such as The Civilians and Red Bull Theatre. Justin Haslett Managing Director

Justin Haslett is in his third season as a company member at the helm of PlayMakers’ administrative operations. He has more than 15 years in not-forprofit theatre management experience. From 2007-2016, Justin served as Associate General Manager to Boston’s largest not-for-profit theatre, the Huntington Theatre Company, recipient of the 2013 Regional Theatre Tony Award. During his time at the Huntington, he oversaw production budgets, negotiated contracts with agencies and unions, managed Company Management, and worked with award-winning regional and national talent. Prior to his time at the Huntington, Justin served as Director of Development for Merrimack Repertory Theatre in Lowell, MA where he strengthened its foundation of engaged and generous community support. He also held multiple positions in development, marketing and management/administration for the Yale School of Drama, Yale Repertory Theatre and the International Festival of Arts & Ideas. Justin holds an MFA in Theatre Management from the Yale School of Drama and a BA in Theatre and Anthropology from Bowdoin College. He currently serves as the Chair of the Chapel Hill Cultural Arts Commission, serves on the Carborro Arts Committee and the Orange Country Arts Commission, and teaches classes in theatre management at UNC-CH.

Michael Rolleri Production Manager

Michael is in his 32nd season with PlayMakers Repertory Company. He has been Technical Director, Project Manager, Exhibition Technician and Lighting Designer for industrial shows in the Southeast region, as well as lead carpenter for films, the U.S. Olympic Festival and scenic studios. He has also been a rigger in the Southeast region and has served on the executive board and as President of IATSE Local 417. Michael is a 30 year Gold Pin member of IATSE. An active member of USITT, he is a three-time winner at Tech Expo for the United States Institute For Theatre Technology. He is Associate Professor/Head of the Technical Production Program at UNC-Chapel Hill and was an instructor at High Point University and Tufts University. Education: MFA in Design and Technical Production, UNC-Greensboro.

Please note that campus parking is maintained by UNC’s Department of Public Safety, and while free and open to the public after 5:00pm and on weekends, parking is frequently used by the larger UNC population and the Chapel Hill community. Policy on Young Children As a courtesy to our patrons, it is the policy of PlayMakers not to admit children under the age of 5. All of our shows have age recommendations based on the content of each production. If you are considering bringing your child, please refer to our age recommendations, or contact our Box Office for further information.

Headsets for Hearing Impaired Patrons Our theatres are equipped with sounds systems that amplify the sound from the stage. Patrons who wish to use the system may obtain headsets on a first-come, first-served basis from the coat check. Headsets must be returned immediately after the performance.

Late Seating and Leaving Your Seat During the Performance In order to minimize disturbance to other patrons and the actors, late seating will be provided at the discretion of the house manager at an appropriate break in the action on stage. Patrons who need to be seated late must be escorted by house staff to seats at the rear entrance of the auditorium. Patrons can take their regular seat at intermission. We discourage patrons from leaving their seats during the performance. Be advised that you most likely will not be able to return to your regular seat; patrons will be reseated by house staff at the rear of the auditorium.
