The Outsiders (Program Book)

Page 1

2025-2026

DEAR FRIENDS Welcome

Thank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square. We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible.

Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues.

Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you.

This season we proudly opened three national Broadway tours and next season we will open two, all made possible by Ohio’s theater tax credit, the talented crew and staff here at Playhouse Square, and you, our enthusiastic audiences. We invite you to consider joining our community of season tickets holders for the 2026-27 KeyBank Broadway Series. If you are already a season ticket holder, we thank you and hope you are as excited for next season as we are! Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the story on stage before you.

With best wishes,

WE’RE PROUD to support Playhouse Square

Welcome to Playhouse Square! Playhouse Square is one of Cleveland’s many gems. All of us at Key, Cleveland’s hometown bank, are thrilled that you are enjoying a show in this historic space, one of the best live theater experiences our country has to offer.

In 2025, we are celebrating KeyBank’s bicentennial — evidence of our steadfast and enduring 200year commitment to the communities we serve. Our beloved Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive. We are proud to support this artistic treasure and help bring award-winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series.

For two centuries and counting, some of KeyBank’s most important work has taken place through philanthropy, volunteerism, and outreach. This is why, in addition to our Broadway Series partnership, we are proud to support Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and educational programming. We are committed to opening more doors to new opportunities here in our hometown and in all the communities we are part of.

Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $2 billion in Northeast Ohio which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgage, and transformative philanthropy. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed. Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!

Sincerely,

SPOTLIGHT ON News

TWO BELOVED TITLES CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARIES ON BROADWAY

Broadway marked two major milestones in March as both Disney’s Aladdin and The Book of Mormon celebrated landmark anniversaries. Aladdin commemorated its 12th anniversary at the New Amsterdam Theatre on March 20, playing its 4,349th performance and welcoming more than 7.2 million audience members since opening in 2014. Aladdin is the 14th longest-running show in Broadway history and one of the highest-grossing productions of the past decade. One night earlier, on March 19, The Book of Mormon celebrated 15 years at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, continuing its run as the longest-running show in that theatre’s history and the 10th longest-running musical on Broadway. The event was commemorated with special surprises at curtain call and announcements of upcoming anniversary performances featuring original cast members later this season.

COMING SOON TO YOUR LIVING ROOM

Netflix is continuing to expand its slate of filmed theater with two high-profile Broadway captures. The Tony Award-winning revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Merrily We Roll Along — starring Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez and directed by Maria Friedman — was released on April 4, following its limited theatrical release and record breaking Broadway run at the Hudson Theatre, where it won Best Revival of a Musical and acting Tonys for Groff and Radcliffe. Meanwhile, performances of the prequel play Stranger Things: The First Shadow were canceled for a week in February to accommodate a live shot with the original Broadway company, led by Louis McCartney as Henry Creel. The release date for Stranger Things: The First Shadow on Netflix (who is also a producer on the Broadway play) has yet to be announced.

ANN-MARGARET TO RECEIVE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Stage and screen legend Ann-Margret will receive the 2026 Chita Rivera Awards Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring her six-decade career and enduring impact on dance across film, television, and the stage. The celebration will take place May 18 at NYU’s Skirball Center, as part of the annual ceremony benefiting the NYC Dance Alliance Foundation. Best known to theater audiences for her breakout turn in the film version of Bye Bye Birdie, Ann-Margret’s body of work bridges Hollywood and musical theater, with notable performances in Tommy, State Fair, Newsies, and the national tour of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, along with Emmy-winning dramatic work on television.

DON’T MISS BROADWAY’S BIGGEST NIGHT

Broadway’s biggest stars will gather at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 7, for the 79th annual Tony Awards. The ceremony will be broadcast live coast to coast on CBS from 8–11 p.m. ET, with streaming available on Paramount+ and on-demand viewing for select subscribers the following day. Nominees will be announced on May 5.

SPOTLIGHT ON Donors

Stanley Joseph Brady IV (August 4, 1955–September 23, 2025)

IN MEMORY

In September, the Brady family and the Playhouse Square community lost a dear friend in Stan Brady. To many, he was known not only as Mr. Amy Brady (Playhouse Square Board Chair Emeritus), but as a dedicated advocate and champion for Playhouse Square. Stan is remembered for his courage, generosity and unwavering support of the people and causes he loved.

LEGACY OF KINDNESS

The Outsiders was one of Stan’s favorite shows, and through this production we feel his legacy of kindness more than ever. From seeing the preview in La Jolla, to attending opening night in New York City, to celebrating its Best Musical win at the Tony Awards, Stan followed the show with the same joy that defined his life. True to his sense of humor, he even had “Stangelina” monogrammed on his shirt cuff for opening night in honor of Angelina Jolie, one of the show’s lead producers.

Wherever he went, Stan connected with people through his warmth. From making friends at the Tonys, sharing smiles with staff and RedCoats, thanking concessions workers, and greeting the valet on Euclid Avenue. His love for the arts was always about the people and the kindness he extended to everyone along the way.

CONTINUING THE MISSION

His spirit touched every aspect of our operations, from successfully advocating the amendment of a bill to secure tax credits for launching Broadway theater in Ohio, to cheering on students at the annual Dazzle Awards and Disney Musicals in Schools Student Share Day. Stan’s enthusiasm and generosity were a great support to our programs, district institutions, productions and staff. A true champion for the causes he believed in and friend to all, Stan inspires us to continue his legacy in our community.

PROGRAM NOTE David Greene

At Playhouse Square, we are incredibly proud to support the Tony Award-winning Best Musical production of The Outsiders as a Co-Producer, both on Broadway and this first national tour. From its earliest stages of development, this project captured our imagination — not only for its artistry, but for its deep emotional resonance and its connection to the values that guide our work: belonging, caring, ambition, excellence and stewardship. It has been a particular pleasure collaborating with Lead Producers and Cleveland natives Matthew Rego, Michael Rego and Hank Unger, whose passion for this story and commitment to bringing it to life have helped shepherd The Outsiders from page to stage with integrity and heart. Seeing this production now shared with audiences across the country, and especially here in Cleveland, is particularly meaningful.

Few novels have left as lasting an impression on young readers as The Outsiders. For decades, it has been required reading in classrooms across Ohio, often serving as a first introduction to literature that feels personal, immediate and honest. One of the reasons the book has endured is simple and radical: S.E. Hinton wrote it as a teenager. That youthful authorship gave the story a voice that felt authentic then — and still does today. Hinton didn’t write about young people from a distance: She wrote from within their world, capturing the intensity of adolescence, the ache of belonging and the quiet fear of being defined by circumstances beyond one’s control.

Those qualities are precisely what continue to make The Outsiders relevant to people of all ages. At its core, the story is not about rumbles or rivalries, but about class, identity, loyalty and empathy. The divides between the Greasers and the Socs — between those with power and those without — may look different today, but they have not disappeared. Young people still grapple with expectations placed on them before they have a chance to define themselves. They still navigate a world eager to label them, often without understanding their full story.

The Outsiders remains significant because it asks questions that are still pressing: Who gets a second chance? Who is seen? Who is protected? And who is left to fend for themselves?

Translating such a beloved and widely taught novel into a Broadway musical was no small task. The creative team behind The Outsiders honored the spirit of Hinton’s work while finding new ways to deepen its emotional impact. Music, movement and staging allow us to experience the inner lives of these characters — to hear what they cannot say aloud and to feel the weight of their bonds in more powerful ways. The result is not simply an adaptation, but a reimagining that invites both longtime fans and first-time audiences to see the story anew.

That The Outsiders now stands as an award-winning musical, currently in its third year on Broadway, is a testament to the power of telling young people’s stories with honesty and respect. We are thrilled to share this extraordinary production with you and to celebrate a work that continues to remind us — across generations — that while we may come from different worlds, we all want to be understood.

TEEN-AGERS ARE FOR REAL

In 1967, a few months after The Outsiders was released, The New York Times published an op-ed by a then 19-year-old S.E. (Susie) Hinton titled “Teen-Agers Are for Real:”

“All we hear is how teen-agers are rebelling against authority, against country, against parents. This is partly true. It is more true that all we are doing most of the time is asking, ‘Why?’ and getting as an answer ‘Because it’s always been done that way.’ If there were more stopping and explaining why it’s aways been done this way, there’d be more understanding. Understanding breeds communication. There we are back at the root of the matter.”

“Teen-agers should not be written down to; anyone can tell when [their] intelligence is being underestimated ... Teen-agers know a lot today. Not just things out of a textbook, but about living. They know their parents aren’t superhuman, they know that justice doesn’t always win out, and that sometimes the bad guys win. They know that persons in high places aren’t safe from corruption, that some men have their price, and that some people sell out. Writers needn’t be afraid that they will shock their teen-age audience. But give them something to hang on to. Show that some people don’t sell out, and that everyone can’t be bought. Do it realistically. Earn respect by giving it.”
