2025-2026

DEAR FRIENDS Welcome

Thank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square. We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible.

Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues.

Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you.

This season, we are proud to open three national Broadway tours, made possible by Ohio’s theater tax credit, the talented crew and staff here at Playhouse Square, and you, our enthusiastic audiences.

Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the story on stage before you.

With best wishes,

WE’RE PROUD to support Playhouse Square

Welcome to Playhouse Square! Playhouse Square is one of Cleveland’s many gems. All of us at Key, Cleveland’s hometown bank, are thrilled that you are enjoying a show in this historic space, one of the best live theater experiences our country has to offer.

In 2025, we are celebrating KeyBank’s bicentennial — evidence of our steadfast and enduring 200year commitment to the communities we serve. Our beloved Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive. We are proud to support this artistic treasure and help bring award-winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series.

For two centuries and counting, some of KeyBank’s most important work has taken place through philanthropy, volunteerism, and outreach. This is why, in addition to our Broadway Series partnership, we are proud to support Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and educational programming. We are committed to opening more doors to new opportunities here in our hometown and in all the communities we are part of.

Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $2 billion in Northeast Ohio which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgage, and transformative philanthropy. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed.

Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!

Sincerely,

SPOTLIGHT ON News

BROADWAY WELCOMES BEACHES

Beaches, a heartfelt new musical based on the beloved New York Times bestselling novel and blockbuster film chronicling the 30 year friendship between two friends, will open on Broadway this spring. Previews begin March 27, with opening night set for April 22. Starring Jessica Vosk as Cee Cee and Kelli Barrett as Bertie, the show features music by Grammy winner Mike Stoller and a book by Iris Rainer Dart, and is directed by Lonny Price and Matt Cowart. Beaches had its international premiere at Theatre Calgary in Alberta, Canada, in 2024, a run which also starred Vosk and Barrett. The limited Broadway run will conclude on September 6, 2026, with plans for the show to then head out across the country on a national tour.

JUST IN TIME TO LAUNCH NATIONAL TOUR IN 2027

Following its Tony-nominated Broadway run at Circle in the Square, the Bobby Darin musical Just in Time, starring Jonathan Groff and directed by Alex Timbers, is set to begin a North American tour in June 2027. The production — featuring Darin’s iconic hits like “Beyond the Sea,” “Splish Splash,” “Dream Lover,” and “Mack the Knife” performed by a live onstage band — earned six Tony nominations and saw its cast recording shortlisted for a Grammy. Tour cities and casting details are yet to be announced.

TITANIQUE DOCKS ON BROADWAY

This spring, Broadway’s St. James Theatre will welcome Titanique, the hilariously campy Céline Dion–narrated spoof of Titanic that first made waves Off-Broadway in 2022. Co-created by Marla Mindelle (reprising her award-winning role as Dion), Constantine Rousouli, and director Tye Blue, Titanique begins previews March 26, 2026, and officially opens April 12 for a 16-week limited run. The show — an irreverent mash-up of blockbuster visuals, Dion’s iconic ballads like “My Heart Will Go On,” and over-the-top humor — earned Olivier Awards in London and played internationally in Montreal, Sydney, and Paris before heading to Broadway.

WEST END TO PREMIERE COYOTE UGLY

The hit film Coyote Ugly is getting a high-energy makeover for the stage, with a brand-new musical set to premiere in London’s West End in 2027. The musical, based on the movie released in the year 2000 that instantly became a fan favorite, will feature not only songs from the original soundtrack like “Can’t Fight the Moonlight,” “Please Remember,” and “The Right Kind of Wrong,” but also new songs by Grammywinning songwriter Diane Warren. The musical also promises to bring to the stage all of the iconic bar-top dancing and bold spirit of the original New York Coyote Ugly Salon bar upon which the story is based. Hold onto your hats!.

RAISE A GLASS TO THE PLAYHOUSE SQUARE DISTRICT’S NEWEST COCKTAIL BAR

Guests to the Playhouse Square District can add a new location to their list for pre-show or post-show drinks. Encore, a 40-seat cocktail bar, is now open on Tuesdays–Sundays at 1580 Euclid Avenue. The menu features refined cocktails alongside creative bites, each crafted to complement one another. The addition of Encore is a part of Playhouse Square’s “Beyond the Stage” initiative, which is designed to enhance the experience of theatergoers and provide a welcoming environment for downtown workers, residents and visitors.

ARTS & MINDS UPDATE

Playhouse Square is leading Ohio with its arts programming for people with Parkinson’s and receiving international recognition as the organization is the first in the state to obtain certification as a Dance for PD® Licensed Affiliate. Playhouse Square is now only one of 23 Dance for PD® Licensed Affiliate locations worldwide. Dance for PD® is an internationally recognized program that offers researchbacked dance classes — both in-person and virtual — for people with Parkinson’s disease, and it represents the highest quality of teaching standards and artistry. The certification was pursued and completed by Playhouse Square’s Senior Manager of Neurological Programming Joan Meggitt, who is one of fewer than 50 Dance for PD® Certified Teachers worldwide. Individuals with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners can register for free weekly classes at Playhouse Square and learn more about the Arts & Minds collaboration with Cleveland Clinic at playhousesquare.org/arts-minds.

SHARE YOUR LOVE FOR PLAYHOUSE SQUARE

Ohio residents can show their passion for Playhouse Square as they hit the road with the new Playhouse Square organizational license plate. All Ohio motorists are eligible to purchase the specialty license plate which features the Playhouse Square burgundy logo. For more information and pricing, please visit bmv.ohio.gov or your local BMV Deputy Registrar License Agency. A portion of the proceeds from these license plates go back to Playhouse Square.

SPOTLIGHT ON Disney Musicals in Schools

Disney Musicals in Schools, presented by Dee & Jimmy Haslam, is an outreach program that creates sustainable musical theater programs in elementary schools. Each year, four schools are selected from applications from Cuyahoga, Lake and Lorain County elementary schools that have a student poverty level of 50% or higher, bringing arts into areas that are without. These schools receive a 19-week musical theater residency led by Playhouse Square’s professional Teaching Artists, with the goal of providing the necessary training and professional development for the schools to continue the tradition of theater education for years to come.

2025-2026 Schools

PROGRAM NOTE David Greene

Suffs begins with the opening number, “Let Mother Vote,” and from the very first notes, I was locked in — not just by the wit and energy of the music, but by the weight of its message.

“We nurture every family just as we’re meant to do, So won’t you let us nurture the nation, too? Let Mother vote, we raised you after all.

Won’t you thank the lady you have loved since you were small?”

As Carrie Chapman Catt made her case for women’s suffrage, my mind immediately went to my own family history. My grandmother was born in 1919 — right at the time when the 19th Amendment passed between the House and Senate and the year before it was officially ratified by the states, granting women the right to vote. I thought about how she came into the world just as history was changing. From her, my thoughts turned to my mom, my sister, my wife and my daughters — the generations of women who shaped me and continue to shape the world around me. That personal connection made the story feel urgent and alive.

Suffs is not just a history lesson; it’s a reflection. It tells the story of ordinary people who refused to accept the status quo and, through persistence and courage, changed the course of American democracy. These women were not superheroes — they were citizens who believed in something bigger than themselves. That’s a lesson that still matters today. In a time when rights and representation are still debated, Suffs reminds us that progress is never guaranteed. Every generation must pick up the work left unfinished by the last.

Even though these events happened more than a century ago, the questions they raise — about activism, belonging and how far we’re willing to go — still feel strikingly current. The show explores the strategic divides within the suffrage movement: Should change come through polite persuasion or bold disruption? The debates these women had about strategy sound a lot like the conversations happening now in the many movements facing the nation. No matter where you stand, you’ll recognize the passion, the doubts and the determination in these characters.

I am excited to share Suffs with you. Historical and meaningful, yes. But just as important, it’s a fantastic piece of theater. Shaina Taub’s Tony Award-winning score is vibrant and contemporary, and her Tony Award-winning book brings history to life with humor and heart. The staging is dynamic, the choreography charged and the performances exceptional.

For me, this story feels personal. But for all of us, it’s universal. It honors the women who paved the way, while reminding us that the work isn’t finished. When you watch Suffs, you’re not just watching history; you’re stepping into a story that still shapes our lives today. It’s a chance to reflect on where we’ve been, where we are and where we’re headed. And that’s what great theater does: it connects us, it moves us and it inspires us to imagine what comes next.

Enjoy,

PLAYHOUSE SQUARE History

Playhouse Square Education Department

Since its inception in 1998, the Playhouse Square Education Department has remained committed to including the widest possible audience through streaming initiatives, sensory-friendly performances and its social justice series. The department is unique in the performing arts industry for the variety of programs it offers, the partnerships it initiates and the access it provides students, educators and aspiring artists to performing arts professionals. The Education Department oversees The Dazzle Awards presented by Pat and John Chapman, Disney Musicals in Schools presented by Dee and Jimmy Haslam, as well as school matinee performances, Children’s Theater Series and Family Theater Day. The department also manages the free Broadway Buzz pre-show talks that are held before most KeyBank Broadway Series performances. For more than 25 years, the Education Department has offered thousands of events, workshops and classes — most with minimal or no fees thanks to the generosity of our donors — and its nationally recognized performances and arts education programming have impacted hundreds of thousands of people in Cleveland and around the world, as they have enriched individuals of all backgrounds, abilities and means.

The Playhouse Square Chandelier

The Playhouse Square Chandelier at the intersection of E. 14th and Euclid Ave. is the largest outdoor chandelier in North America with 4200 crystals. The Chandelier is generously presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company.

A Change in History?

One of many fascinating items to be found in the book Playhouse Square: An Entertaining History deals with the infamous John Wilkes Booth. Booth performed locally at the old Academy of Music, which was one of the first drama schools in the country and was located at 1371 W. 6th Street. It was at that Cleveland Academy where he would play his last role prior to performing at Washington D.C.’s Ford Theatre where he would assassinate President Lincoln. (Might history have been changed if the Academy had held over Booth’s play for an extended run?)

There Goes the Neighborhood!

The 1870s ushered in the golden age for Euclid Avenue — known as Millionaire’s Row — as the street became a stretch of grand mansions, with grounds often extending as far as Lake Erie, and stately elm trees arching over the avenue.

But by Cleveland’s Centennial in 1896, Euclid

Avenue residents were likely muttering, Well, there goes the neighborhood! as the dirt street was paved with sandstone, and businessmen began to buy up and tear down the mansions and towering elms to make way for commercial ventures.

Streetcar lines on the once totally residential stretch hastened the creation of a commercial district, forcing wealthy families to move even farther east on Euclid Avenue. In another 30 years, the district would see the birth of the five main theaters that would eventually become Playhouse Square.

Broadway to Buildings

Where do the arts and real estate go hand-in-hand? At Playhouse Square, of course! As the theaters began to be restored in the early 1980s, it was thought that developers would step in to build and open businesses around them. When that didn’t happen, Playhouse Square began to steward development of the surrounding neighborhood. In 1999, Playhouse Square became the first performing arts center with a real estate services division, which manages the more than 2.6 million square feet of property owned by the organization and another three million square feet outside the theater district. Other performing arts centers have since looked to our expertise as a model.

The Mural Above the Fireplace

Above the fireplace at the rear of the KeyBank State Theatre auditorium, an original mural hangs despite its near-tragic loss. Removed from the wall in the early 1970s prior to the scheduled demolition of the venue, the mural eventually turned up in the basement of a piano store and was repurchased by Playhouse Square for $200.

The recovered mural was badly torn, having originally been painted on burlap then glued to the wall. The challenge of restoring the artwork fell to the Theater District’s Bonfoey Company. Artisans sanded the glue from the burlap and attached the cleaned mural to canvas via beeswax.

The next step was to clean and restore the work where needed. A stretcher for the canvas had to be custom-made. To eliminate tears and wrinkles, the stretcher was designed to expand and contract with the theater’s climactic changes and held together with springs (no nails or screws). It took Bonfoey employees 18 months to restore the painting at a cost of $8,500.

Although the creator of this mural is unknown, it is suspected to be Italian artist Sampitrotti, who had painted three murals for the original Mimi Ohio Theatre lobby. (Those murals were later destroyed in the Ohio’s 1964 lobby fire.)

World’s Longest Lobby Explained

In 1920 as the Loew’s chain anticipated building in the area that would come to be known as Playhouse Square, it was discovered there wasn’t sufficient room to build two theaters side by side in the available space.

Since it was important that the proposed theater marquees be located on Euclid Avenue, an architectural plan was devised. Even though the KeyBank State Theatre would be completed and open 21 months before the Connor Palace, it was decided to build the KeyBank State behind the Connor Palace. This led to the construction of the KeyBank State’s 320-foot-long lobby, reported to be the longest theater lobby in the world. The Mimi Ohio Theatre would then be built on the other side of the KeyBank State, giving all three theaters the desired Euclid Avenue marquee frontage.

What Would It Cost to Build Them Today?

Even though the Connor Palace is not the largest of the Playhouse Square venues, it was the most costly to build ($3.5 million) by the time it premiered on Nov. 6, 1922. The largest theater, the KeyBank State, (opened Feb. 5, 1921) was built at a cost of $2 million; the Mimi Ohio (Feb. 14, 1921) also cost $2 million, and the Allen’s costs totaled $1.9 million when it opened April 1, 1921. (Exact building costs for the Hanna Theatre — which opened March 28, 1921 — have yet to be uncovered.) In 1977, it was estimated that it would cost $75 million to recreate the Connor Palace.

A Phoenix from the Ashes

In 1964, the Mimi Ohio Theatre lobby and auditorium were destroyed by fire. When the fledgling Playhouse Square organization restored the spaces in 1982, funding and time constraints made it possible only for the auditorium to be fully restored. Thanks to a gift from the George Gund Foundation, the lobby was re-created in its original splendor in 2016. You can watch a documentary about the project, “Restoring the Legacy,” on Playhouse Square’s YouTube channel.
