A Cultural Journey

Where Curiosity Meets Community

DEAR FRIENDS Welcome

Thank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square. We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible.

Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues.

Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you.

Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the story on stage before you. We look forward to welcoming you back to Playhouse Square again soon and invite you to consider joining our community of season tickets holders for the 2025–26 KeyBank Broadway Series. If you are already a season ticket holder, we thank you and hope you are as excited for next season as we are!

With best wishes,

WE’RE PROUD to support Playhouse Square

Welcome to Playhouse Square! All of us at KeyBank are thrilled to see you here enjoying one of the best live theater experiences our country has to offer — and it’s right here in Key’s hometown of Cleveland. Our beloved Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive and has proved over time to be a pillar of our great community. We are proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award-winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series. As in years past, the team here at Playhouse has worked very hard to bring you a spectacular lineup of shows, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store this year.

For decades, some of KeyBank’s most important work has taken place through philanthropy, volunteerism, and outreach. This is why, in addition to our Broadway Series partnership, we are proud to support Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and educational programming. We are committed to opening more doors to new opportunities in the communities we serve.

Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $2 billion in Northeast Ohio which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgages and transformative philanthropy.

Our investments will continue to focus on economic access and equity for underserved communities and populations. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed.

Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!

The musical has been seen by over 70 million people worldwide, has been turned into two successful films, and continues to hold the title of ninth longest running Broadway show of all time. This revival marks a return of the show to the Winter Garden Theatre, where it initially opened in 2001 and ran for 14 years. Tickets for the limited run of Mamma Mia! are currently on sale at MammaMiaBway.com.

GIVING BACK to Playhouse Square

Playhouse Square is a community-based not-for-profit organization which depends upon philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, and corporations. More than $7 million dollars must be raised annually to help Playhouse Square meet its mission of operating and maintaining the historic theaters, expanding arts education outreach, and investing in the community through area development. The following are charitable opportunities which support Playhouse Square:

Donor Circle

The Donor Circle is a program for individuals who support Playhouse Square with an annual gift of $50 or more. Donor Circle donors are offered perks and benefits to enhance their experience at Playhouse Square. Companies can also contribute via the Corporate Donor Circle program. This program offers similar benefits as listed above, but provides enhancements to meet the needs of companies wanting to increase their visibility in the community and strengthen business relationships.

Contact: Katie Remark, 216-640-8721, playhousesquare.org/partners.

Leading Ladies

In the spirit of fun and celebration, Leading Ladies is designed to engage women by providing the opportunity to connect with each other through a shared passion for Playhouse Square and its not-forprofit mission. Members are invited to four exclusive events throughout the year, such as pre-show cocktail receptions, special guest speaker luncheons, and behind-the-scenes experiences. An annual membership is $250. Contact: Leanne Dewyer, 216-640-8411

PROGRAM NOTE David Greene

Cleveland, we are about to get Shucked! Kernel Sanders has called Shucked “finger licking funny.” The NYC Grain Men’s Chorus said that this is “something to sing about!” These fake reviews and a cornucopia of other unconventional advertising strategies helped launch Shucked from an obscure title and story thought to only be about corn into a Broadway surprise that enthralled Broadway audiences and critics alike.

I saw the show on Broadway in the spring of 2023 with our CEO Craig Hassall. On our leisurely walk back to the hotel, we tried to recall and recite our favorite one-liners, playful puns and rapid-fire jokes. There were so many that I immediately texted the show’s agent asking for a copy of the script. We had just spent the last two hours laughing our ears off from the a-maize-ingly fast-paced adventure, filled with plot twists, eccentric characters, infectious country and bluegrass inspired tunes, and a poppin’ premise. We spent the next several days reminding each other about the unexpected and wildly good time we had in the theater that night, and describing it to those who would listen.

Unexpected nights in the theater often come from original stories. At the helm of this unpredictable book is Tony Award-winning writer Robert Horn. The project started 14 years ago as a concept in the style of the classic television show Hee Haw. But, as the show developed, Horn realized that the 1970s themes of the popular variety show did not align with his vision and the sensibilities of contemporary audiences. So, rather than directly adapting Hee Haw, Horn shifted focus, teamed with Grammy Awardwinning country music superstars Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, and created a unique story that preserves the spirit of the rural comedy at its roots.

Clark and McAnally are known for their massive contributions in shaping the sounds of modern country music. They push the boundaries of the genre by tackling unconventional subjects and blending humor, heartache and authenticity in their songs. This made them the perfect partners to pen the completely original music and lyrics for a new show that would delightfully combine all three of the qualities they were so proficient at writing.

Horn, Clark and McAnally collaborated closely to create a cohesive and humorous narrative. Horn’s comedic expertise stemmed from his early career writing for television shows including Designing Women and Living Single, as well as his more recent Tony Award-winning adaptation of the blockbuster film Tootsie for the Broadway stage. The trio’s shared sense of humor and dedication to originality in storytelling drove the collaboration and created an experience for us that is not only side-splittingly funny, but full of heart and relevance.

While the jokes and puns flow freely throughout, underneath the laughs and groans is a story that celebrates the importance of community and the values of kindness, unity, embracing change and resilience in the face of a shared crisis.

Shucked is Broadway at its finest — a place where creativity has no borders and where audiences can find joy in the most unexpected places.

Enjoy,

PLAYHOUSE SQUARE History

Playhouse Square Education Department

Since its inception in 1998, the Playhouse Square Education Department has remained committed to including the widest possible audience through streaming initiatives, sensory-friendly performances and its social justice series. The department is unique in the performing arts industry for the variety of programs it offers, the partnerships it initiates and the access it provides students, educators and aspiring artists to performing arts professionals. The Education Department oversees The Dazzle Awards presented by Pat and John Chapman, Disney Musicals in Schools presented by Dee and Jimmy Haslam, as well as school matinee performances, Children’s Theater Series and Family Theater Day. The department also manages the free Broadway Buzz pre-show talks that are held before most KeyBank Broadway Series performances. For more than 25 years, the Education Department has offered thousands of events, workshops and classes — most with minimal or no fees thanks to the generosity of our donors — and its nationally recognized performances and arts education programming have impacted hundreds of thousands of people in Cleveland and around the world, as they have enriched individuals of all backgrounds, abilities and means.

The Playhouse Square Chandelier

The Playhouse Square Chandelier at the intersection of E. 14th and Euclid Ave. is the largest outdoor chandelier in North America with 4200 crystals. The Chandelier is generously presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company.

Marquees on Display

The Playhouse Square District is shining brighter than ever before with our magnificent marquees and outdoor digital signage. The marquees’ designs were inspired by each historic theater with the ceiling of each marquee capturing elements from the grand ceiling of its respective theater. The marquees are equipped with localized sound to welcome audiences with thematic soundtracks, as well as sustainable, energy-efficient LED lighting that can complement shows, holidays and other themes. Guests can catch the

Marquee Moment presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company, every night before entering and leaving their performances at the theaters.

There Goes the Neighborhood!

The 1870s ushered in the golden age for Euclid Avenue — known as Millionaire’s Row — as the street became a stretch of grand mansions, with grounds often extending as far as Lake Erie, and stately elm trees arching over the avenue.

But by Cleveland’s Centennial in 1896, Euclid Avenue residents were likely muttering, Well, there goes the neighborhood! as the dirt street was paved with sandstone, and businessmen began to buy up and tear down the mansions and towering elms to make way for commercial ventures.

Streetcar lines on the once totally residential stretch hastened the creation of a commercial district, forcing wealthy families to move even farther east on Euclid Avenue. In another 30 years, the district would see the birth of the five main theaters that would eventually become Playhouse Square.

Basketball on the KeyBank State stage?

The stage of the KeyBank State Theatre is so large that a typical high school gymnasium (complete with basketball court and bleachers) could easily fit on stage. As another point of comparison, three of the Mimi Ohio Theatre stages could fit onto the State’s stage.

Broadway to Buildings

Where do the arts and real estate go hand-in-hand? At Playhouse Square, of course! As the theaters began to be restored in the early 1980s, it was thought that developers would step in to build and open businesses around them. When that didn’t happen, Playhouse Square began to steward development of the surrounding neighborhood. In 1999, Playhouse Square became the first performing arts center with a real estate services division, which manages the more than 1.7 million square feet of property owned by the organization and another 1.5 million square feet outside the theater district. Above the fireplace at the rear of the KeyBank State Theatre auditorium, an original mural hangs despite its near-tragic loss. Removed from the wall in the early 1970s prior to the scheduled demolition of the venue, the mural eventually turned up in the basement of a piano store and was repurchased by Playhouse Square for $200.

The recovered mural was badly torn, having originally been painted on burlap then glued to the wall. The challenge of restoring the artwork fell to the Theater District’s Bonfoey Company. Artisans sanded the glue from the burlap and attached the cleaned mural to canvas via beeswax.

The next step was to clean and restore the work where needed. A stretcher for the canvas had to be custom-made. To eliminate tears and wrinkles, the stretcher was designed to expand and contract with the theater’s climactic changes and held together with springs (no nails or screws). It took Bonfoey employees 18 months to restore the painting at a cost of $8,500.

Although the creator of this mural is unknown, it is suspected to be Italian artist Sampitrotti, who had painted three murals for the original Mimi Ohio Theatre lobby. (Those murals were later destroyed in the Ohio’s 1964 lobby fire.)

What Would It Cost to Build Them Today?

Even though the Connor Palace is not the largest of

the Playhouse Square venues, it was the most costly to build ($3.5 million) by the time it premiered on Nov. 6, 1922. The largest theater, the KeyBank State, (opened Feb. 5, 1921) was built at a cost of $2 million; the Mimi Ohio (Feb. 14, 1921) also cost $2 million, and the Allen’s costs totaled $1.9 million when it opened April 1, 1921. (Exact building costs for the Hanna Theatre — which opened March 28, 1921 — have yet to be uncovered.) In 1977, it was estimated that it would cost $75 million to recreate the Connor Palace.

World’s Longest Lobby Explained

In 1920 as the Loew’s chain anticipated building in the area that would come to be known as Playhouse Square, it was discovered there wasn’t sufficient room to build two theaters side by side in the available space.

Since it was important that the proposed theater marquees be located on Euclid Avenue, an architectural plan was devised. Even though the KeyBank State Theatre would be completed and open 21 months before the Connor Palace, it was decided to build the KeyBank State behind the Connor Palace. This led to the construction of the KeyBank State’s 320-foot-long lobby, reported to be the longest theater lobby in the world. The Mimi Ohio Theatre would then be built on the other side of the KeyBank State, giving all three theaters the desired Euclid Avenue marquee frontage.
