A MESSAGE FROM MICHELLE As we begin another year, I am excited about the extraordinary experiences we will share at Playhouse Square in 2024. In 2023, we welcomed audiences to our historic theaters with a diverse and captivating lineup of Broadway shows, concerts and family-friendly productions. We continued to expand our community engagement initiatives, bringing the magic of theater to even more schools and communities across Northeast Ohio. It certainly cannot go unnoticed that, in just the past few months, the exterior of Playhouse Square shines a little brighter! I hope you have had the opportunity to take a moment to enjoy the dazzling new marquees lighting up Euclid Avenue, adding a touch of excitement to the heart of downtown Cleveland. As we look ahead to the new year, there is much to look forward to: • The KeyBank Broadway season continues with Mrs. Doubtfire in January and

Funny Girl in February. Through June, Playhouse Square and our resident companies will present more than 680 performances on our stages! • As always, we look forward to hosting our annual Disney Musicals in Schools Student Share day, presented by Dee and Jimmy Haslam, in March and the annual Dazzle Awards, presented by Pat and John Chapman, in May. • We plan to present new and innovative education programs and outreach initiatives, including our first show for young audiences fully produced by Playhouse Square, Velveteen, inspired by The Velveteen Rabbit. Velveteen will have a social-emotional learning focus. • We will continue to bring life and energy to the theater district with the opening of the Bulkley Building apartments in late 2024, along with additional new neighborhood amenities and establishments for residents and guests to enjoy.

Along with a wealth of professional experience and expertise, Brent brings a demonstrated commitment to the community to his new role as Board Chair: • He is the Managing Partner Emeritus of Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP, where he has practiced law for over 40 years. • He has been recognized as a leading expert in corporate law by Crain’s Cleveland Business (2022) and has served as counsel to many of Northeast Ohio’s leading businesses. • As a dedicated philanthropist, he also serves on multiple boards in service to the Northeast Ohio community.

VELVETEEN: A FIRST FOR PLAYHOUSE SQUARE

In 2022, Playhouse Square’s Education team, inspired by the classic The Velveteen Rabbit, began producing a show for the Children’s Theater Series. Under the leadership of Treva Offutt, Director of Education, Velveteen will be the first show for young audiences fully produced by Playhouse Square! The team will move forward with a musical performance of Velveteen, making the endeavor even more ambitious. This uplifting performance will have a focus on social-emotional learning, touching on themes such as finding the strength in being your authentic self, the challenges of life transitions and the importance of having social and emotional support. Playhouse Square looks forward to presenting Velveteen during the 2024-25 season.

Each year, Disney Musicals in Schools, presented by Dee & Jimmy Haslam, provides four schools with a 19-week musical theater residency led by Playhouse Square’s Teaching Artists. DMIS concludes with a performance of a Disney KIDS Musical as well as the Student Share Celebration in March on the Mimi Ohio stage where students demonstrate everything they have learned through the program.

SOCIAL JUSTICE SERIES

As part of Playhouse Square’s commitment to fighting systemic racism, our education department offers a Social Justice Series, as a part of its school performances. The series explores inequity through the perspectives of artists of color and offers in-person and virtual options, making the series accessible to a wider audience.

Social Justice Shorts

The Education team further developed their programming, creating Social Justice Shorts to support dialogue and representation. This initiative continues to seek compelling stories to share with students and educators from Pre-K-12. Three 10-minute theater shorts are set to stream to schools on demand from February 19-March 8.

CHAIRMAN’S DINNER Playhouse Square honored Danny Barnycz, Chief Creatologist at The Barnycz Group with the Henkel Lewis Award. An acclaimed urban designer, he has a long history of work with Playhouse Square, including the Marquee Moments event this past September, presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company, and the Dazzle the District unveiling of gateway entrances to the district and the Playhouse Square Chandelier in 2014. The award recognizes distinguished individuals whose work continues to enhance our world through a lifetime of dedication to the performing arts, contributions to our culture, leadership and creative thinking. This award, previously named the Playhouse Square Star Award, was renamed the Henkel Lewis Award, to honor the first two Playhouse Square Board Chairs, Oliver “Pudge” Henkel, Jr. and John Lewis.

CONNECTING WITH LEADING LADIES In their ninth year of supporting Playhouse Square, Leading Ladies continued to offer members unique experiences to enhance their love and knowledge of the performing arts and connect with each other. This year they welcomed the cast of SIX The Musical for an informal talk about their experience as an all-female cast. In December, they enjoyed time together at a holiday reception while honoring Amy Brady’s leadership as Playhouse Square Board Chair. They even had a special surprise guest, Clevelander Josiah Rogers from the cast of Hairspray, to serenade and thank Amy before the performance.

PARTNERS PREPARE TO UNLEASH THEIR INNER VILLAINS AT JUMP BACK BALL Partners, Playhouse Square’s young professionals group, are busy planning to host the annual Jump Back Ball on February 17. Most people do not know that Partners design and build all their own décor! About 30 Partners volunteer at nine Shop Nights, accounting for hundreds of hours to make Jump Back Ball possible. The event is much more than a party; it is a vital fundraising event for Playhouse Square’s education programs, including sensory friendly programming, which is dedicated to increasing access and inclusion for those with sensory needs. DEAR FRIENDS Our 2022-2023 fiscal year was book-ended by significant anniversaries. Throughout the fall, we recognized the 100th anniversaries of our five historic theaters. In the spring, we acknowledged the 50th anniversary of the opening of the show that saved Playhouse Square – Jacque Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. As we celebrated, the future of Playhouse Square grew ever brighter. We opened the 2022-2023 KeyBank Broadway Series in great style by launching the national tour of the timeless classic Les Miserables complete with a visit from Sir Cameron Mackintosh, Alain Boublil and ClaudeMichel Schonberg. In addition to Les Mis, 44,000 season ticket holders joined us for Cats, Beetlejuice, Hadestown, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical, Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Six The Musical. As our successful partnership with the University of Akron entered its seventh year, we welcomed more than 2200 season ticket holders to Blue Man Group, Tootsie and Jesus Christ Superstar for the Broadway in Akron series at E.J. Thomas Hall.

Our Children’s Theater Series and Family Theater Day, both presented by University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, reached a new overall attendance record with more than 58,000 guests enjoying live performances designed for young audiences. And with our partners at University Hospitals, we raised awareness and created supportive space for conversation around the important topic of pregnancy loss by producing and presenting a film version of I Hate This (a play without the baby) by Cleveland playwright David Hansen. University Hospitals is now using the film as a training tool for caregivers and staff.

REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2022-2023

Our Education Department shared the magic of theater with 89,000 students in a record 29 Ohio counties during the 2022-2023 fiscal year, with some classrooms traveling to Playhouse Square for in-person student matinees and others connecting to streaming performances on demand. Students from our Disney Musicals in Schools and Dazzle Awards programs took their turns in the spotlight to share their talents, and we hosted our second Broadway sensory-friendly performance with Disney’s Frozen. We continue to enliven the Playhouse Square District for visitors, businesses and residents. In September of ’22, we announced plans to upgrade our digital media network and install dazzling new theater marquees and in

May of ’23, we began construction on four floors of residential housing in The Bulkley. This will add 84 apartments to the district, a portion of which will be available for short-term rental by cast and crew members putting on shows at Playhouse Square. At the center of all that we do is our dedicated Board of Trustees, the best staff in the industry, devoted volunteers, the generous donors who support our not-for-profit mission and our audiences. Thank you to everyone who plays a role in making Playhouse Square the vibrant destination it is. We invite you to read on for more highlights from the past year.

AMY BRADY

Craig Hassall joined Playhouse Square in February 2023 as the organization’s fourth President & CEO. Since his arrival, he and the staff have brought several key initiatives across the finish line to advance our not-for-profit mission and build an even more vibrant and welcoming destination in the heart of Cleveland. We look forward to sharing more about these accomplishments with you throughout the year and in next year’s Report to the Community. For now, a few highlights: success in lobbying the Ohio General Assembly for a dedicated theater tax credit, a new resident company – The City Club, a new venue – The Corner Gallery – with our first exhibition, and the completion of our new marquees and upgraded media network.

CRAIG HASSALL As her term as our Board of Trustees Chair ends in December 2023, I would like to thank Amy Brady for her outstanding dedication and service to the organization through a period marked with transition – Art Falco’s retirement, the closure necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, our reopening, Gina Vernaci’s retirement, and my arrival. Amy has led with brilliance and grace, and all of us at Playhouse Square are so very grateful to her. Stepping into the role is Brent Ballard, Managing Partner Emeritus with Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP. Brent has been sharing his wise counsel with Playhouse Square as a member of the Board of Trustees since 2013; we are fortunate his leadership will guide us into the future.
