2025-2026

DEAR FRIENDS Welcome

Thank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square. We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible.

Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues.

Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you.

This season, we are proud to open three national Broadway tours, made possible by Ohio’s theater tax credit, the talented crew and staff here at Playhouse Square, and you, our enthusiastic audiences.

Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the story on stage before you.

With best wishes,

Your legacy helps create a healthier community.

At University Hospitals, we take our commitment to our community seriously and are grateful for your ongoing support in this rapidly changing world. Together, we’ll continue to treat patients like family, find new treatments and cures, and prepare the next generation of caregivers. Join others who are helping advance the science of health and the art of compassion by leaving their legacy.

WE’RE PROUD to support Playhouse Square

Welcome to Playhouse Square! Playhouse Square is one of Cleveland’s many gems. All of us at Key, Cleveland’s hometown bank, are thrilled that you are enjoying a show in this historic space, one of the best live theater experiences our country has to offer.

In 2025, we are celebrating KeyBank’s bicentennial — evidence of our steadfast and enduring 200year commitment to the communities we serve. Our beloved Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive. We are proud to support this artistic treasure and help bring award-winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series.

For two centuries and counting, some of KeyBank’s most important work has taken place through philanthropy, volunteerism, and outreach. This is why, in addition to our Broadway Series partnership, we are proud to support Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and educational programming. We are committed to opening more doors to new opportunities here in our hometown and in all the communities we are part of.

Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $2 billion in Northeast Ohio which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgage, and transformative philanthropy. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed.

Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!

Sincerely,

SPOTLIGHT ON News

JUST ANNOUNCED!

Several familiar book and movie titles are eyeing a spot on the stage, either as a new work or a revival. Here are just a few of the upcoming titles to watch for.

Dreamgirls Revival

Tony-nominated choreographer Camille A. Brown is set to make history as the director and choreographer of the upcoming 2026 Broadway revival of Dreamgirls. Known for her dynamic work on Hell’s Kitchen, Choir Boy, and for colored girls..., Brown will be the first Black woman to direct and choreograph a major Broadway musical in over four decades. The beloved musical originally premiered in 1981, and a film adaptation starring Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé, Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx was released in 2006. Performances are slated to begin in Fall 2026.

The Baby-sitters Club The Musical

It’s been almost four decades since the first book in Ann M. Martin’s iconic The Baby-Sitters Club series was published, and now Claudia, Stacey, Mary Anne and Kristy are about to take on a new adventure: Broadway! A brand-new musical adaptation, with book by Kate Wetherhead (The Devil Wears Prada, Ever After) and music and lyrics by Mark Sonnenblick (Kpop Demon Hunters), will have industry readings in NYC this fall. The musical is set 12 years after the end of the series, as the original group returns to Stoneybrook, CT, to honor their teenage pact to reunite. The Baby-sitters Club is one of the best selling children’s book series of all time with nearly 200 million books in print to date and translations in 23 languages.

A Beautiful Mind

A musical adaptation of the Oscar-winning film A Beautiful Mind is officially in development for the stage, promising a powerful new take on the story of mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr. Drama Desk Award nominee Zoe Sarnak will compose the score, while Emmy Award nominee Sarah Treem will pen the book. Inspired by Sylvia Nasar’s acclaimed biography, the production is being developed in partnership with Universal Theatrical Group and McCarter Theatre Center. A production timeline has not yet been announced.

LONG TIME CAST MEMBER DEPARTS THE LION KING

After an extraordinary run of over 9,000 performances, Tshidi Manye took her final bow as Rafiki in The Lion King on August 31, marking the end of a historic chapter in Broadway history. Manye, who joined the production in 2000 and became the longest-running Rafiki across all Disney’s The Lion King companies, has captivated audiences with her powerful voice and presence — especially in her iconic renditions of “Circle of Life.” Manye also joined the tour company of The Lion King for a limited run in 2013, which included a stop here at Playhouse Square.

PLAYHOUSE SQUARE LAUNCHES ARTS & MINDS PROGRAMMING

Playhouse Square in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic has launched its new Arts & Minds programming for those with neurological disorders in the Northeast Ohio community. The first initiative within this program — Dance for Parkinson’s — creates space for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and their care partners to engage in meaningful arts experiences. Held in accessible places throughout Playhouse Square’s historic theaters and state-of-the-art spaces, free Dance for Parkinson’s classes are available on a weekly basis and give participants the opportunity to explore movement possibilities and celebrate community. Special events will also be offered throughout the year where participants can experience performances and conversation with artists seen on Playhouse Square stages, along with a Dance for Parkinson’s activity. Playhouse Square’s Dance for Parkinson’s classes are supported by a community grant from the Parkinson’s Foundation. For more information on Playhouse Square’s Arts & Minds programming, please visit playhousesquare.org/arts-minds.

A SWEET NEW SHOP IN THE PLAYHOUSE SQUARE DISTRICT

Guests to the Playhouse Square District can enjoy a sweet treat before or after seeing a performance as Ben & Jerry’s has opened its scoop shop in the Hanna Building (1422 Euclid Ave.). The venue is open daily, and its menu features a range of their wellknown ice cream flavors that can be served in a waffle cone, milkshake, sundae or a classic cup. Visitors can also enjoy flavors that are “exclusive” to the Playhouse Square District. The addition of Ben & Jerry’s is a part of Playhouse Square’s “Beyond the Stage” initiative, which is designed to enhance the experience of theatergoers and provide a welcoming environment for downtown workers, residents and visitors.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

From filming at Playhouse Square to a record-breaking Midwest premiere at the Cleveland International Film Festival and now a theatrical release, Lost & Found in Cleveland is a must-see for audiences this holiday season. The film takes a look at the American Dream set in “the best location in the nation,” Cleveland. Set in a 24-hour period, the movie follows the personal odysseys of five very different people, whose lives intertwine when America’s favorite televised antiques appraisal show comes to Cleveland. Lost & Found in Cleveland features star-studded cast including Martin Sheen, Jon Lovitz. June Squibb, Dennis Haysbert, Liza Weil, Dot-Marie Jones and Rory O’Malley. Audiences can see the film in theaters on November 7.

DONOR CIRCLE NEW MEMBER TOUR

In July, new Donor Circle donors attended a reception and theater tour in appreciation of their first annual donation. They had the opportunity to meet members of the Development staff and learn about the latest program and education updates from Chief of Community Engagement, Michelle Ryan Stewart and VP of Education, Daniel Hahn. Donors ended the evening with a private behind-the-scenes tour of the theaters.

Playhouse Square relies on the support of annual donors to help enrich our community through the performing arts. If you are interested in supporting our not-for-profit mission, visit playhousesquare.org/giving.

PROGRAM NOTE David Greene

When I first saw  Hell’s Kitchen at The Public Theater, I knew right away it was something special. The show pulsed with raw energy, heart and authenticity — an electrifying mix of storytelling and music that felt both deeply personal and universally relatable. From that Off-Broadway experience, I was hooked and eager to follow the show’s journey. So, when I had the chance to attend opening night on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre, I didn’t hesitate. The room was buzzing — yes, full of celebrities — but more importantly, it was charged with excitement. Once the lights went down, that energy exploded into a performance that was powerful, emotional and unforgettable.

Hell’s Kitchen isn’t just a musical. It’s a celebration of identity, resilience and the journey of finding your voice. As the father of teen and pre-teen daughters, this story hits home for me. I see firsthand how complex the world is for young people today — the pressure to fit in, the expectations they carry and the constant noise telling them who they should be before they’ve even figured that out for themselves. What I saw in Hell’s Kitchen was a story that speaks directly to that experience: a young woman pushing back, asking questions and learning to trust herself. It’s a ride filled with conflict and vulnerability, but also with strength, discovery and, ultimately, empowerment.

Collaborating on combining emotional depth with high-octane entertainment is a fusion of four powerhouse creative forces: Kristoffer Diaz’s sharp and emotionally rich book; Camille A. Brown’s dynamic and intensely expressive choreography; Michael Greif’s authentic, character-driven direction; and of course, the incomparable Alicia Keys, whose music and storytelling inspiration are at the center of attention.

Kristoffer Diaz’s writing brings a fresh, honest voice to the stage. His sharp, funny and sincere dialogue captures the highs and lows of growing up in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City with real nuance.

Camille A. Brown’s choreography brings the story to life in a way that’s bold, expressive and rooted in community. She blends street styles, modern dance and social rhythms to create movement that feels fresh and emotionally charged.

Michael Greif expertly guides the architectural structure to this story, putting the relationship between 17-year-old Ali and her mom, Jersey, in the spotlight. His vision doesn’t just help the creative process, it transforms the audience’s experience.

And then there’s Alicia Keys. Her music is the heartbeat of  Hell’s Kitchen. These are songs that have defined a generation, reimagined here to tell a story inspired by her own life. Her presence is felt in every moment — not just as a composer, but as a cultural icon whose authenticity and artistry shine through.

Bringing  Hell’s Kitchen to the KeyBank Broadway Series was an easy call. There was plenty of competition to host the launch of the national tour, but in the end, our reputation — built on the strength of our audiences, the quality of our resources and the relationships we’ve cultivated — put Cleveland at the top of the list. We’re proud to kick off this journey and share this incredible production with our community.

Enjoy,

PLAYHOUSE SQUARE History

Playhouse Square Education Department

Since its inception in 1998, the Playhouse Square Education Department has remained committed to including the widest possible audience through streaming initiatives, sensory-friendly performances and its social justice series. The department is unique in the performing arts industry for the variety of programs it offers, the partnerships it initiates and the access it provides students, educators and aspiring artists to performing arts professionals. The Education Department oversees The Dazzle Awards presented by Pat and John Chapman, Disney Musicals in Schools presented by Dee and Jimmy Haslam, as well as school matinee performances, Children’s Theater Series and Family Theater Day. The department also manages the free Broadway Buzz pre-show talks that are held before most KeyBank Broadway Series performances. For more than 25 years, the Education Department has offered thousands of events, workshops and classes — most with minimal or no fees thanks to the generosity of our donors — and its nationally recognized performances and arts education programming have impacted hundreds of thousands of people in Cleveland and around the world, as they have enriched individuals of all backgrounds, abilities and means.

The Playhouse Square Chandelier

The Playhouse Square Chandelier at the intersection of E. 14th and Euclid Ave. is the largest outdoor chandelier in North America with 4200 crystals. The Chandelier is generously presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company.

Broadway to Buildings

Where do the arts and real estate go hand-in-hand?

At Playhouse Square, of course! As the theaters began to be restored in the early 1980s, it was thought that developers would step in to build and open businesses around them. When that didn’t happen, Playhouse Square began to steward development of the surrounding neighborhood. In 1999, Playhouse Square became the first performing arts center with a real estate services division, which manages the more than 1.7 million square feet of property owned by the organization and another 1.5 million square feet outside the theater

district. Other performing arts centers have since looked to our expertise as a model.

The Show That Saved Playhouse Square

After seeing a performance of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris at Cleveland State University, Ray Shepardson — the man who was the driving force behind the saving of Playhouse Square’s theaters — decided to stage the show in the KeyBank State Theatre lobby for three weeks. Clevelanders flocked to the performances and the show’s run extended to more than two years, proving that audiences would return to Playhouse Square and to downtown.

Marquees on Display

The Playhouse Square District is shining brighter than ever before with our magnificent marquees and outdoor digital signage. The marquees’ designs were inspired by each historic theater with the ceiling of each marquee capturing elements from the grand ceiling of its respective theater. The marquees are equipped with localized sound to welcome audiences with thematic soundtracks, as well as sustainable, energy-efficient LED lighting that can complement shows, holidays and other themes. Guests can catch the Marquee Moment presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company, every night before entering and leaving their performances at the theaters.

In Residence

Playhouse Square is proud to be the home of eight resident companies: The City Club of Cleveland, Cleveland Ballet, Cleveland International Film Festival, Cleveland Play House, Cleveland State University Department of Theatre and Dance, DANCECleveland, Great Lakes Theater and Tri-C JazzFest.

A League of Our Own

Playhouse Square is a member of The Broadway League, the national trade association for the Broadway industry. Formed in 1930, members include theater owners and operators, producers, presenters, general managers and suppliers throughout North America.
