Playhouse Square exists because the Cleveland community came together to preserve these historic theaters for future generations. We are honored to care for this remarkable legacy, which has grown into one of Ohio’s most treasured cultural destinations. As a not-for-profit organization, our mission extends beyond maintaining these extraordinary spaces. Each year, we bring audiences together through an array of wonderful entertainment, including Broadway productions, concerts, comedy, dance, theater, film, family programming and more. We also advance arts education through programs that make the arts accessible to students, teachers, and lifelong learners — in classrooms, online, and here at Playhouse Square. As a dynamic downtown destination, Playhouse Square contributes more than $359 million in annual economic impact to the region. Above all, our focus remains on creating meaningful experiences and lasting memories for every guest who walks through our doors. This season, we are especially proud to welcome two national Broadway tours to our stages: Death Becomes Her and The Who’s Tommy. A WICKEDLY GOOD NEW EXPERIENCE Fans of Wicked will soon be able to experience Oz in a whole new way. A new Wicked in Concert event has been announced, pairing screenings of both Wicked and Wicked: For Good with a live full orchestra performing Stephen Schwartz’s beloved songs alongside the films’ scores by Schwartz and John Powell. The concert presentation celebrates the blockbuster movie adaptations starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, while also spotlighting the enduring popularity of the stage musical, which continues to run on Broadway and in London’s West End. Additional details for the concert events, including tour dates and venues, will be announced at a later date. In the meantime, you can still experience the original stage musical, as Wicked returns to Playhouse Square Dec. 9–Jan. 3! Tickets are currently on sale at playhousesquare.org or by calling 216-241-6000.

BROADWAY IS ABOUT TO GET A LITTLE MORE PURPLE Prince fans, mark your calendars: Purple Rain is officially making its Broadway debut in spring 2027! The new musical, based on the iconic 1984 film and packed with more than 20 of Prince’s biggest hits, will begin previews March 12 at the Majestic Theatre before opening April 12. Following a world premiere in Minneapolis in 2025, the production arrives on Broadway with a refreshed creative team led by Tony nominee Saheem Ali (Buena Vista Social Club) and writer Peter Duchan (Dogfight). Set in 1984 Minneapolis, the musical follows a rising musician known as “The Kid” as he navigates fame, family struggles, and his dream of stardom, all set to a soundtrack that includes classics like “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die 4 U,” and “The Beautiful Ones.”

WYLD STALLYNS RIDE AGAIN

Excellent news, Wyld Stallyns fans: Bill & Ted are officially headed to the stage. Bill & Ted’s Most Excellent Rock Opera is currently in development for a 2027 world premiere, with original Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure co-writer Chris Matheson returning to pen the musical and direct an upcoming workshop. Featuring an original score by Grandaddy founder Jason Lytle, the show follows the time-traveling duo as they turn their legendary history report into a live rock opera, backed by an all-star band of historical figures including Beethoven, Joan of Arc, Abraham Lincoln, Napoleon, Genghis Khan, and Sigmund Freud. Developed in partnership with Emerson College, Berklee College of Music, and Boston Conservatory, the musical is scheduled to hold a developmental workshop in Boston this fall.

Your loyalty, enthusiasm and passion for the performing arts continue to make Cleveland the premier touring Broadway market in North America. Your support not only sustains Broadway in Cleveland but also helps shape the future of the touring industry itself. That impact is more evident than ever as we celebrate the launch of Death Becomes Her, our fourth national tour launch in the last 12 months. What was once a remarkable milestone has become a defining part of Playhouse Square’s role in the Broadway ecosystem. Increasingly, producers and creative teams are choosing Cleveland as the place where new productions take their first steps onto the road. The opportunity to develop and refine these spectacular productions before some of the most engaged and enthusiastic audiences anywhere has established Playhouse Square as one of Broadway’s most important launching pads. Based on the beloved 1992 film, Death Becomes Her takes a wildly entertaining look at one of humanity’s oldest questions: If eternal life were possible, would you actually want it? It is a question that has fascinated philosophers, artists and dreamers for centuries. The musical approaches it with brilliant humor, spectacular theatricality and a wonderfully wicked sense of fun. Beneath the laughs, however, lies a thoughtful exploration of ambition, vanity, insecurity and our relentless pursuit of youth. At its heart, the story is also about friendship, rivalry and the complicated relationships that shape our lives. The feud between Madeline and Helen may be exaggerated to outrageous comic extremes, but the emotions beneath their conflict are deeply recognizable. Jealousy, competition, resentment and the longing for validation can strain even the closest of friendships. As they pursue immortality, they discover that living forever is far less complicated than learning to live with one another. The result is a musical that is not only hilarious but also unexpectedly insightful about the choices we make and the relationships we value. Bringing this larger-than-life story to the stage is an exceptional creative team whose accomplishments span Broadway’s biggest successes. Among them is Northeast Ohio native Paul Tazewell, whose groundbreaking costume designs have earned the highest honors in theater and established him as one of the most celebrated designers working today.
