Note from the Director

A Special Farewell to Rick Wieland

We couldn't miss this opportunity to recognize Rick Wieland for his 25 years of service to the City of Frisco. Rick was the first director of Parks and Recreation for the city and he has served with selflessness and integrity. Rick will be retiring in January 2022 and we will miss him dearly. I could say a lot more, but I think it would be more meaningful to hear Rick share some of his memories from his time here. Thank you for your service, Rick!

Trying to condense almost 26 years of memories in a few paragraphs is almost impossible. The memories have become a robust collection of emotions, impressions, relationships, and little snapshots of work life and personal life intertwined together like a beautiful garden.

From the time I started in 1996, I have never had what you would call a typical job. Developing a new department was something I have always treasured here. Watching our tiny staff team develop and grow as people and professionals through the years has been a privilege to watch.

My Family. I have always talked freely about my wife Luanne and my three sons Jay, Colby and Sam, as well as Jay’s wife Carolina and their four children. Luanne has been the rock in our family and has been so supportive of me even with all the missed evenings, weekends, holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries – more than I care to remember. I would not be the person I am without all of them.

Leadership. I have worked with great servant leaders over the years. City Manager George Purefoy has always been the cornerstone, but I’m also grateful for Ron, Henry, Nell, and Ben as they allowed our department to grow and were supportive along the way. Having City Councils and Mayors, from Mayor Warren to Mayor Cheney, be constant cheerleaders for our department helped us and all

the other City departments succeed. The Boards and Commissions that we work with regularly have had great leaders of their own and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with them. And the Frisco residents — what a special community this is! They have been patient, kind, and supportive with us as we have grown and expanded our ability to offer creative programming and facilities along the way. We could not do anything without them!

Play Frisco Events and Facilities. My memory has snapshots of watching little girls dance with their dad or another family member at Daddy Daughter Dance. Seeing kids and families catch fingerling trout at Trick-A-Trout, usually on the coldest day of the year, always made me smile. Being a part of Merry Main Street, from when it was literally on Main Street to where it now happens at Frisco Square. Watching the Senior Center grow from a small 20’ x 40’ room to its current home at The Grove at Frisco Commons. Going from a cramped recreation center at Preston Ridge Campus to the massive Frisco Athletic Center and Water Park. “Wow” is about all I can express!

I loved seeing several thousand volunteers come together over a few days to transform an empty tract of land into a wonderful park and playground called Frisco Commons, a foundational park for the city. I’ll always remember that experience. These are all just a few of the many

worthwhile projects that have been accomplished for our residents.

Our Staff and City Staff. One of the most enjoyable parts of working with the Parks and Recreation team is the wide range of talents and experience levels. The staff members’ futures are all out there in front of them and what a great future it will be. To the staff that have the most tenure here, all I can say is thank you. I am so proud of all the work you have accomplished and the dedication you have shown. I also owe a big thank you to Shannon for her graciousness and help over the past four years. She has become a valued friend. The department is in good hands and I know that great things are ahead!

I have also been blessed by the relationships I developed in the other City departments. Frisco has so many good people working for the City in every area. It has always touched my heart to know each of you and cherish those relationships. Thank you all!

Just having been a small part of a fraction of so many parks, recreation, and open space projects we have developed would fill anyone’s career bucket list. How more blessed could a person be?

Learn to Swim - Parent & Child (6 mos.-3 yrs.)

The purpose of the Parent and Child Aquatic program is to help young children become comfortable in and around the water so they are ready to learn to swim. While the class is designed to raise the comfort level of the child, it is also intended to educate the parent or caregiver in basic water skills so they are better equipped to aid in their child's aquatic education and ensure that their child stays safe in all water activities. Children two to three years will be introduced to equipment used in preschool lessons and will work with instructors on taking individual direction to help transition from parent and child to preschool swim classes.

Frisco resident A.F. “Frank” Smith served in the U.S. military in World War I and, like many other soldiers, he and his family exchanged letters through the postal service. More than 50 of Frank’s letters were discovered in 2011 and will be on display at the Frisco Heritage Museum from November 11-May 28. Frank’s letters from the war’s frontlines show his love and affection for his family, and his positive attitude in the worst of situations.
