Mayor’s Message Playford spirit shines through The last few months have been incredibly challenging with the COVID-19 outbreak. We have all played our part for the health and safety of our wider community. Following the Government guidelines during this tough time has led to good results for the state.

While we couldn’t come together to commemorate ANZAC Day this year, many paid their respect at home to ‘Light up the Dawn’, as well as our own light installation projected onto the Windsor Carpark. United apart, it was incredibly moving to see many driveway tributes shared on social media.

Now more than ever, finding ways to stay connected has been extremely important. We have been here for you, busily adapting to keep you connected to services that matter to you. This includes Playford Library home delivery service, wellbeing monitoring phone calls to our socially isolated and vulnerable, Rise N Shine Playgroup Facebook live, and Easy Meals order and pick up from the Healthy Food Co at The Precinct in Smithfield Plains.

The music never stops at Bangers and Mashups, a Northern Sound System program, and The Shedley Theatre introduced their very own talk show – Centre Stage. You can watch the programs and episodes on their respective Facebook pages. Our friendly customer care team have also been here for you, answering your phone, email or web chat enquiries. Meanwhile, The Grenville Hub construction is progressing nicely, with concrete footings poured, lift wells and structural steelwork erected and first floor concrete poured. Once fully complete the new Hub will provide a range of services promoting lifelong learning, physical activity, healthy living and social connections for our community.

The Playford spirit continues to shine through. I am immensely proud of our community resilience and our combined efforts to stay safe, positive and connected.

Whether it’s developing young children’s skills in the kitchen, creating local employment opportunities, volunteering to support events at the Grenville Hub, providing a friendly face and resources to isolated community members, or nurturing the development of young musicians.

This is Joanne Move over celebrity chefs, two new local cooks are influencing Playford residents to prepare healthy feasts at home.

Community Foodie volunteer, Joanne Ladhams, and her two-year-old daughter, Cedar, have started their own online cooking show.

The show aims to demonstrate to families how easy it is to create healthy meals for the whole family without all the fuss.

“I want to be a good influence to my children and the community when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle.”

“I have always had a passion for food, whether it be cooking or eating,” Jo said.

Jo has been a positive role model in the community, presenting cooking demonstrations and educating young children to help them gain confidence in the kitchen.

“I think it’s an essential life skill for children,” she said. “It is healthy for them to have a good appreciation for food and safety in the kitchen.”

Jo said teaching children about different foods and encouraging them to try new things can be challenging, but getting them in the kitchen can change this.

“I find it much easier to get Cedar to try new foods that she has helped prepare,” she said.

Jo’s Kitchen airs monthly on the Healthy Food Co Facebook page and features a range of Easy Meals that can be purchased in-store.

This is Anthony Sneaky’s Restaurant owner and Head Chef, Anthony Pilaia has always had a passion for people and Italian food - it’s in his blood.

“My grandparents ran the very first pizza bar in Two Wells over thirty years ago; they brought with them their traditional family recipes from Italy when they migrated to Australia in the 1950s.”

“I learnt the ropes from my Nonno, who taught me the family business,” he said.

Six years ago he partnered with Virgara Wines to open Sneaky’s Restaurant, bringing over 20 years of experience in the food and hospitality industry with him.

“I chose Angle Vale to establish the restaurant, as it is in a good location in a growing area. We have a cellar door and winery in the vicinity and a large garden perfect for weddings.”

Last year Sneaky’s were awarded the South Australian Restaurant Reception Centre of the year 2019, awarded by the Australian Bridal Industry Academy.

For Anthony being in the heart of the Northern Adelaide Plains means he “has the pick of the crop when it comes to quality produce.”

“I’ve teamed-up with local suppliers and have fresh produce delivered daily from local farms.”

A local boy himself, living in Angle Vale with his wife Rhiannon and family, employing local people is important to Anthony with over 20 of his employees from the local area.

“Fortunately I was able to retain all of my staff with the recent support of the Government Job Keeper stimulus package,” he said.

Sneaky’s temporarily closed its doors when COVID-19 restrictions were first introduced for the health and safety of their staff, customers, family and friends. After closing the business for six weeks they re-opened with a new approach offering pick-up and delivery options.

You will find most of the restaurant menu is still on offer, with delivery options now available across Playford and some suburbs in Gawler and Salisbury. At the time of print, Sneaky’s offers indoor and alfresco dining in-line with State Government’s current restrictions.

Anthony says, “the majority of what we serve to our customers is handmade and cooked on the premises. My aim is to bring restaurant quality food to your home.”

This is Kev If you have ever met Kev, you won’t forget him.

His trademark mohawk is far from a passing fad - he’s had it for around 16 or 17 years. He mowed it through his head in a fit of defiance as a prior employer disliked his previous cut, which was a very precise flat-top.

“I don’t know what all the fuss is about. It’s just hair.”

Several years ago, a work accident forced Kev to consider his future working options. After damaging his shoulders, he was relegated to a desk job during recovery. He kept busy organising jobs, crews and work schedules, but he really wanted to get outside in the fresh air.

You may have seen Kev out and about mowing, trimming, or installing markers on a street near you. He is one of our City Operations team members, in the Parks and Verges team. A hi vis guy for the past two years.

It took him awhile to get here. Kev previously ran his own business as a ​builder and one of his jobs was installing windows at the Playford Civic Centre.

“Everyone at the City of Playford was so good to work with, it planted a seed… one day I would like to work there.”

Kev grew up in Elizabeth, and is entrenched in Playford life. He and his wife Sandy are currently building a home in Munno Para West, and this will be the seventh home they’ve had in Playford.

“I love it here and wouldn’t live anywhere else.

Everyone is so friendly and chatty wherever you go. It’s just a top community.”

“The patrons at Grenville are like extended family and last year, even our daughter helped to serve meals on Christmas Day.”

He applied for several outdoor jobs at the City of Playford as they came up, but despite having a builder’s licence and various certificates, he didn’t technically have a trade. What he really wanted to do was to get on a mower.

With the support of his Workcover Specialist Kev went to TAFE to study a Certificate 2 in Horticulture and continued to volunteer with our Grenville team.

A temporary job came up driving the water truck for Playford’s Tree team, and with the new qualifications under his belt he jumped at it. This eventually led to a full time role driving the water truck for the Tree team - but Kev’s heart was on the verge. So when someone on the Parks and Verges team wanted to drive the water truck, Kev happily swapped roles and ended up right where he wanted to be.

This is Wendy

Wendy, Playford’s Home Library Officer, never anticipated she would be celebrating 24 years with the City of Playford’s Library Service when she first applied for the role, yet her friendly face has become a staple of the Library.

“A friend of mine encouraged me to put my resume in for the role at the the old library in Elizabeth,” recalls Wendy.

“At first I thought she was mad because there was no way would they want me, I am too rowdy!”

A week after handing in her resume Wendy started working as a volunteer, and three weeks later she secured a casual position with the Library team.

Today Wendy is responsible for the Home Library service which provides library resources to Playford residents who are unable to physically access the Library.

Each month Wendy delivers resources such as books, DVDs, CDs and audio books to 118 residents from across Playford.

“However the service is more than just delivering library resources. I visit these people once a

month, most often stopping in to have a chat, so you naturally develop a relationship with your borrowers.”

According to Wendy the best part of her role is going out and visiting community, making sure everyone’s ok and connecting them to additional Council services where appropriate.

“I look forward to coming to work every day. It’s a great place to work and we are like a big family at the Library.”

A local Playford resident since 1984, Wendy can’t imagine living anywhere else.

“Playford is a nice place to be. We have a strong community spirit, people are friendly and genuinely care.”

In September Wendy will celebrate 24 years with the City of Playford Library Service, however for Wendy it’s more than ‘just a job.’

“You feel like you are helping people, providing connections and support to people who may be vulnerable or isolated. It’s what makes working at the Library the best job because it’s so fulfilling and rewarding.”

The Home Library service is available to Playford residents dealing with short or long-term difficulties caused by illness, age, frailty or disability. To learn more contact the Library on 8256 0333 or email library@playford.sa.gov.au.

This is DyspOra Music a vehicle to give communities a voice Gabriel “DyspOra” Akon is one of the most influential hip hop artists in South Australia empowering people through music.

Born in South Sudan, Akon spent his younger years in a Kenyan refugee camp.

Akon said he found hope in music, which built his sense of resilience.

“People don’t realise the power of hope until their backs against the rope,” DyspOra said. “It injected a lot of hope into my life at the time or at times that I needed it most.”

The sonic activist is a big believer of giving back and has been an active member supporting local musicians through Northern Sound System, as well as the broader South Australian multicultural community.

“In every possible way music has helped me and that’s the only reason I use it to help others,” Akon said.

“To have a place like Northern Sound System that has a strong community culture armed with the resources to continuously provide for young people.”

From developing an intercultural music program targeting social inclusion for young people to presenting TEDX Youth talks at universities, his commitment to the community has not gone unnoticed. Akon was awarded the 2019 Governor’s Multicultural Youth Award and nominated for SA Young Australian of the Year in 2020.

“You can’t quantify the level of impact you have with music,” he said.

song you are working on now is going to be one that changes some kid’s life anywhere around the world.”

He is also the founder of Playback 808, an independent record label and creative movement, which shines a spotlight on local artists producing soulful hip-hop beats.

DyspOra recently released his long awaited debut EP, Australien.

Akon hopes the release is a platform for those who need his voice.

“I use music as a vehicle to channel change, whatever that may be. Using your voice for the greater good and something bigger than yourself,” Akon said.

DyspOra continues to be an artist to watch after multiple performances at major festivals, the supporting act to headline artists, as well as air time on ABC News, Triple J, SBS and more.

This is Kate Kate is one of Council’s Environmental Health Officers. Some people know what they want to do for a job or career early, others have to wait until they stumble across something that takes their interest. For Kate, it was a nasty case of salmonella that led her to a future career in Environmental Health!

“I was studying in Year 12, and working part time at a café, which shall remain nameless” she says, laughing. “I grabbed some lunch from the café and later that day I had reason to regret that decision.”

Advising her employer of her illness (in the hope they would look at their food handling practices) proved frustrating, she found a very strong resistance to any admission of culpability.

“My discussions with them led me to think about breaking down that barrier, and making sure others didn’t have to go through the same thing I did. So I discussed it with a mentor at school, and she suggested Environmental Health might be a good path for me to explore.”

Kate went on to secure her Bachelor in Environmental Health at Flinders University and has been working in the field for 10 years – the last three at City of Playford.

Kate’s role involves carrying out measures for protecting public health, including administering and enforcing legislation and providing support to minimise health and safety hazards.

With the recent COVID-19 pandemic sweeping across the world, community safety has come into sharp focus, and our EHO’s have had a critical role to play in protecting our community. They’ve been tasked to advise businesses of COVID-19 safety protocols and to ensure adherence, as well as monitoring and reporting on gathering hot spots in our public spaces.

Kate says one of the biggest challenges of the role is advising businesses that they may be the source of a contamination.

Kate has nothing but praise for the way businesses have responded to the significant changes required to observe COVID-19 guidelines.

“The resistance is understandable, and sometimes people won’t like what we have to say, but we’re there to help people through hard times. It’s all about making sure the community is safe.”

“They’re going above and beyond what we could even suggest. Businesses have, by and large, fully embraced safety and are completely on board with keeping the Playford community safe.”

This is Mike If you visit Playford’s Men’s Shed or Grenville Hub you would be familiar with Mike Evans, Community Services Officer, and his passion for mindfulness which he has developed over 38 years working as a qualified Counsellor.

Mike runs mindfulness and wellness groups with the Men’s Shed, Grenville Hub and John McVeity Centre, which he says “provides an opportunity for his participants to explore their feelings and feel.”

“Mindfulness is about connecting with the present to alleviate your stress and choosing to approach things with a positive mindset,” said Mike.

During the temporary closure of Playford’s community centres in-line with COVID-19 restrictions, Mike supported his regular participants through phone calls, text messages and online groups so they had the tools to cope with their thoughts during the pandemic.

Mike also supports Playford Connected, a new service which makes phone calls to vulnerable people in our community to ensure they remain connected and engaged, reducing their risk of social isolation.

Mike’s Top 5 Mindfulness Tips: With many people experiencing increased stress and anxiety as they adapt to new routines, experience financial pressures and worry about the health and wellbeing of family and friends, we asked Mike to share some basic mindfulness techniques. Here’s what he had to say: 1. Stop – take a deep breathe. Now slowly breathe in and out five times.

2. Go outside and look at a tree, bird, flower, something in nature. Now just explore, be present in the moment.

3. Make an informed choice of what news and information you watch and read.

Continuous news can feed your anxiety, take a moment to step away.

4. Pamper yourself! Take a hot bath, get your beard trimmed or do a face mask at home.

Do something to look after yourself.

5. Wake up grateful. Get into the routine of telling yourself a few things you’re grateful for as soon as you wake up. Just before you wake up is the best time to install positivity.

A: During the pandemic, I have been talking with residents by phone and submitting requests for service on their behalf, as well as checking on the wellbeing and needs of friends.

I’ve been donating groceries for distribution to families in need, and keeping close touch with family.

ANNUAL BUSINESS PLAN

The year ahead We are focused on supporting a growing city and investing in renewal activity, while following a strong financial plan.

Thank you to everyone who shared their views with us during the recent public consultation for the 2020/21 draft Annual Business Plan. This feedback will be considered by the Council and a decision on the final plan is expected in late June. Here are some of the key things you need to know about this year’s draft Annual Business Plan.

Financially responsible • We have a clear strategy to maintain financial sustainability • This budget sticks to that plan by producing an operational breakeven position and making sure we aren’t overspending

Delivering what is important to you • 99% of the operating budget is for everyday service delivery • Verge mowing • Rubbish collection • Roads and parks maintenance • Community programs

Small increase • A proposed rate increase of 0.45% or approximately $7* per $7 year for a resident with a 0.45% home valued at $242,000

Things are shaping up at Grenville Hub with installed steelworks

Building for the Future Stay updated on major projects progressing in Playford

Things are shaping up at Grenville Hub Construction is progressing well, with services installed, lift wells and structural steelwork in place, and the first floor concrete floor poured! The next key step will be installation of roof and wall cladding. The two-storey design will feature plenty of space and amenities to encourage our ageing community to engage with one another and live life to the fullest! Your new Grenville Hub is expected to be complete in the final quarter of this year.

Powering up Virginia Main Street We are excited to share that Council has endorsed the concept design for the Virginia Mainstreet Upgrade project. In more great news, we’ve also secured grant funding, enabling the entire project to be delivered during 2021! The upgrade incorporates the streetscape works, Gawler Road Entry Statement and development of the Virginia Institute Park to create an attractive, walkable and vibrant town centre.

As for work happening right now, the undergrounding of power lines has commenced and is a significant milestone toward realising the vision of the street to be a welcoming place for locals, businesses and visitors to Virginia. With removal of poles and wires, undergrounding the power lines will enhance the street’s appearance with new street lighting and improved pedestrian footpath access. We’re employing two sustainable road renewal practices and putting some unusual resources to very good use. First, we are crushing 45,000 tonne of old concrete footpaths, kerbing, and concrete bus pads from around the City to use in the sub-base of the renewed road. Secondly, we’re trialing the use of ‘crumb rubber’ in our bitumen seal, which is created from old tyres redirected from landfill. Get your hands dirty with Bill Bill has been our Revegetation Officer since 1998, and over those 22 years he’s had the opportunity to literally change Playford’s landscapes.

Bill estimates he’s personally planted thousands of native plants in Playford and helped coordinate hundreds of thousands. To really sum it up, this year Bill will distribute the 250,000th tube-stock seedling to our Buffers to Bushland rural revegetation scheme in June.

The first one he planted in Playford was on a mound adjacent to Curtis Road.

“I suspect it was a Ruby Saltbush, as we planted a lot of them that day, and I believe some of them are still there. So, if they are there, and they’re still thriving, they’re clearly the ones I planted!”

He smiles wryly, and says “actually, that’s a joke. Ruby Saltbush doesn’t live that long, so plants there now can only be descendants.”

Bill is very passionate about how our natives contribute to a sustainable environment and 20

provide species for revegetation across the City of Playford, including in schools and on rural properties.”

Bill would encourage anyone living in Playford to embrace a native garden, because local natives are species that already provide food and shelter to our local bird, animal, and insect populations.

“There’s such a diverse range of local-native species, and with

more than 500 locally and 1000 in the Adelaide region, there’s a plant suitable for almost any landscape purpose that can be imagined!”

Local-native plants used to grow in Playford before colonisation, so they’re already well adapted to our climate, rainfall, and soil conditions, and generally require little attention to thrive (except a nice watering to get them through their first Playford summer).

While we’re good at getting garden waste in the green bin, a small trial in Playford has proven we need to get better at our FOGO practice.

FOGO stands for Food Organics and Garden Organics and is all about getting our food waste out of the red bin and into the green so we don’t have it going to landfill and harming our environment.

One of the first things we can all do to lower food waste is to start at the source, and reduce the amount of food coming into the household.

These tips require a bit of extra planning up front, and you will have to be willing to cook some of your meals. But it’s worth it to lower the impact of food waste on the environment and on the community.

• Stocktake your pantry – make a list of what you already have, then plan a one or two week menu around those ingredients.

• Make a shopping list and stick to it – you could even include Easy Meals from Healthy Food Co. They come complete with precise ingredients for a meal for 4, so there is little to waste.

• Freeze – freeze vegetables, fresh herbs, meat or dairy ingredients • Cook creatively – search recipe sites for meals using the same ingredients • Regrow your own - many vegetable and herb offcuts, like carrots, onions, celery and potatoes can be regrown easily • Consider compost – start a compost heap in your backyard or buy a compost unit from a hardware store. Your garden will love you for it!

• Use your green FOGO bin – finally, make sure that any food scraps hit your green FOGO bin, along with your garden waste.

This includes food scraps, bones, pet poo, grass, weeds, hair, toe-nail clippings, cuttings from the garden, pizza crusts and boxes – just remember, if it grows, it goes!

Normally our kerbside collection drivers would get out and replace them if they fall, but they’re not allowed to leave the vehicle and touching of multiple surfaces is a safety risk. To help us, please leave one metre between your bin,

parked cars or any nearby trees, and at least 30cms between your bins.

Why aren’t we allowed to burn wood in a backyard campfire?

In the Adelaide metropolitan area (which includes all of Playford) you can’t have a bonfire or campfire in your backyard or on your property. The EPA have put this burning policy into place to help minimise the impact of smoke in populated areas. You can, however, have a fire pit, brazier, or chimenea with charcoal as the fuel (not wood) for outdoor heating. More information is available on the Fire Safety page on our website.

How can I correctly recycle my old gas bottle?

A range of items including gas cylinders can be recycled at NAWMA’s two Resource Recovery Centres. Other items that can be recycled for free include electronic waste (anything with a cord), metal, polystyrene, car batteries, cardboard, fluorescent tubes and household batteries. Gas bottles are free, but fees may apply for some items like car tyres or old x-ray films.
