Welcome to the first edition of Playford News for 2021 and what a start to the New Year it has been.

The new Grenville Hub located within Prince George Plaza is officially open and boasts the latest features from dining and theatre spaces to therapy and technology rooms.The Grenville Hub continues to offer a range of services for people 50 years and above to promote learning, health and wellbeing.

We are also excited to welcome the Playford Wellbeing Hub, a first for northern Adelaide, in partnership with the South Australian Government. The Playford Wellbeing Hub comprises of two community sites: the John McVeity Centre and The Precinct, both located in Smithfield Plains.

Council has an ongoing commitment to the health and wellbeing of the community, which is reflected through the many services we offer. Both of these two new additions will build on these foundations to create more opportunities for our community to feel socially connected.

We have strong, passionate, community focused leaders in Playford that contribute to this commitment, some of who were recognised through our Australia Day Awards. I would like to once again recognise the recipients of these awards for their ongoing contribution to Playford.

We look forward to continuing to share the faces of our community and their stories.

A new era for Grenville.

Gladys Humphries has been attending the City of Playford’s Grenville Hub since it opened in 1983. “I attended the Grenville Hub’s opening event where I served drinks,” recalls Gladys.

“And I used to work in the kitchen every Friday serving fish and chips with mushy peas and salad.”

“We have always had a variety of fun activities to participate in from table tennis to craftwork, fitness classes, group outings, computing skills and theatre productions at the Grenville Hub,” said Gladys.

What stands out in her mind are memories from when the Grenville Hub first opened. “My late husband and I used to attend dancing lessons on Friday evenings and we’d have a great time socialising with everyone.”

You wouldn’t guess it by looking at Gladys, but she is 98 years of age. She credits her long life to everything in moderation and friendships. “If you are going to enjoy your life, friendship is a necessity, and I have been fortunate to make a lot of new friends through the Grenville Hub.” Gladys is the epitome of the Grenville Hub’s ‘live life to the fullest’ slogan. She attends the Grenville Hub every Monday and the One Tree Hill Friendship Group on Thursday, which she has also attended since its establishment in 1998. “I have also been blessed with good health, however I believe you only live one life so you have to live it to the fullest,” said Gladys, who received the Grenville Hub’s Living Live to the Fullest Award in 2013.

Gladys like many Grenville Hub patrons has been eagerly looking forward to the opening of the new building. “I was sad to see the last of the old Grenville Hub, however we are now entering a new era which sees us all move with the modern times and begin making new memories. “It means a lot to me to have a place where I can go and meet people and socialise with people my own age.”

The Grenville Hub is a community space that provides a range of services for people 50 years and above that encourages life-long learning, physical activity, healthy living and social connections.

Community engagement helped shape the design of the new Grenville Hub, which included information sessions, surveys and the establishment of an advisory group. To learn more visit playford.sa.gov.au/grenville or call 8256 0377.

“I think music reflects a sign of the times as a nation, and music is an avenue for people to engage with Aboriginal and First Nations’ cultures.”

This is Rulla Kelly-Mansell, a proud Tulampanga Pakana man, and Marlon Motlop, a proud Larrakia man, who form part of the WOMADelaide x NSS Academy that supports and mentors emerging artists from First Nations and multicultural communities.

From being team mates on the footy field to collaborating to create thought-provoking music, the pair now look to grace the stage alongside some of Australia’s home grown music legends at WOMADelaide 2021.

“This experience has been an opportunity for me to meet artists, learn from them, pick up some new ideas and techniques, but also continue my journey,” Marlon said.

“It’s been an absolute blast to be involved and because of it, it has opened a lot of awesome doors as well,” Rulla added.

Marlon and Rulla, or MRLN x RKM, will open for Vika & Linda and Midnight Oil to an audience of 6,000 at the festival – the duos biggest show to date.

Connection to culture has played a pivotal role for both Marlon and Rulla growing up and continues to influence their music.

“If you look at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, song and dance is a very big part of storytelling and gives you a sense of belonging,” Marlon said. “It tells that story of where you belong in this world. “We put a lot of emotion into our lyrics and hopefully that paints a picture of our lived experience within this country.”

be from further north (Darwin) and I couldn’t be from further south (Tasmania), and we’ve met somewhere in the middle. “It’s a really powerful tool that he can showcase his Larrakia culture and I can express my Pakana nation culture, and somehow mix it together for someone who might not know anything about that, so it’s super important.”

The pair have been busy in the recording studio and look forward to releasing some songs in 2021.

“I’m immensely proud to be in a position where we can share those stories and help people connect with us,” Rulla said.

WOMADelaide x NSS Academy.

Artist Development Program, The WOMADelaide x NSS Academy, is a WOMADelaide Foundation project receiving assistance from the Government of South Australia, the Federal Government’s Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) fund, with support from the City of Playford and Northern Sound System, in partnership with Balya Productions.

The Academy showcases 10 emerging artists from First Nations and multicultural communities.

The artists have engaged in a tailor-made professional development program of events and masterclasses that saw them being matched with high-profile Australian music industry mentors.

Here I go again.

After a long wait, Gavin Cianci is looking forward to taking the stage and star as Sam Carmichael in the Northern Light Theatre Company’s (NLTC) production of Mamma Mia!

According to Gavin, the Shedley holds a lot of sentimental value. “The first time I stepped out onto the stage was at the Shedley Theatre in the NLTC’s production of The Witches of Eastwick, almost 13 years ago… something I will never forget.”

Gavin found his passion performing later in life when he was asked to audition for the show by his colleague’s partner Paula, another performer at the NLTC. This would be new territory for Gavin as his only acting experience was high school drama classes. However, he rose to the challenge as it sounded fun and he hasn’t looked back since.

“I always wanted to perform but I didn’t have the courage to have a crack,” he said. “The beauty of the NLTC is they give you the confidence to have a go, develop skills and then opportunities follow.”

For Gavin, the NLTC has become a second family. “I have forged lifelong friendships through the NLTC, the relationships you build with your cast and crew are unbelievable.”

Gavin has shared his passion of the theatre with his two daughters who have both performed alongside him. “The bonds I have been able to develop with my daughters through our involvement in the NLTC together is very special to me, and it has supported us to overcome difficult times together as a family.”

INDEPENDENT LEARNING Izak and Eli enjoy the self-guided learning projects STEAM Club has to offer.

Full STEAM ahead.

Craigmore brothers Izak and Eli Scherer have been regular attendees of the Playford Library’s STEAM Club since the program commenced in 2019.

Izak, 12, is a keen coder while his younger brother Eli, 9, enjoys the creative side of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), with a passion for design and art.

“During sessions I’ve been exploring design programs like stop motion animation, as I enjoy the creativity,” said Eli. “My grandpa even built me a stop motion rig to make it easier to film.”

For Izak, STEAM Club is all about further developing his coding skills. “The current project I am working on is a video game, which I am really looking forward to playing afterwards.”

According to Izak and Eli’s father, Andreas, the boys have always been involved in the library which is how they initially heard about STEAM Club. “My wife has always been very much connected to both the Civic Centre and Stretton Centre libraries, bringing the boys to different programs and activities throughout their lives,” he said.

Both brothers have a clear passion for STEAM which they hope to pursue a career in. Izak would like to explore software engineering or becoming a game creator, while Eli is interested in becoming an audio engineer as he loves music.

A new initiative at the Stretton Centre in Munno Para will see the Playford Library deliver a range of STEAM programs to support the development of new skills, connections and exposure to employment pathways in STEAM for people aged 10 and up.

There are so many people who need support in our community and with community connection comes lots of additional threads. For example the support we provide the women at the Playford Women’s Shed in turn benefits their family, friends and colleagues they connect with.

Courtney Hatchard Young Citizen of the Year As a netball coach and player, I believe being involved in sport is a great way to provide a positive environment for kids and adults to come together.

Sport is a great way to form community connections while getting out there and having a go. Whether it is for fun, competition or providing something to strive for.

Annette Cooper, Midway Road Community House Community Initiative of the Year A connected community is like knowing all of your neighbours on your street – you feel happier, safer and a sense of belonging.

This is what we try to achieve at Midway Road Community House, as we want everyone in the Playford community to feel that inclusiveness.

Dave Zeelen, Elizabeth Rugby Union Football Club Sports Club of the Year A sense of belonging is extremely important and can have a huge impact on people’s lives, especially for young people.

We have had young players join the club who are struggling with mental health illnesses that makes it hard for them to get out of bed and go to school. Now they are regularly playing rugby and attending school.

Since Martina Button was nine, she has always had a passion to help others with aspirations of working as a missionary in Africa. Her compassionate nature continued well into her adult life, where she found her calling working with communities, educating others and volunteering in Australia and in the United Kingdom.

Martina loves connecting with people and making a positive impact on their life. It was this drive combined with 10 years’ experience in community development that secured her the role of Wellbeing Hub Project Officer at the City of Playford. “This role is really important to me,” she said. “It involves developing and facilitating programs to support people to be physically and mentally healthy and helping people achieve their personal goals and stay connected socially.”

The Playford Wellbeing Hub spans across two sites, The John McVeity Centre and The Precinct in Smithfield Plains. Programs on offer at the Playford Wellbeing Hub include fitness, walking and ‘come and try sports’ at the John McVeity Centre and healthy eating through gardening and cooking programs, open days and art projects at The Precinct.

“Our programs are interactive and provide opportunities for individuals to focus on their mind and body,”said Martina. “We know by being physically active daily, you are more likely to feel happier, improve your mood and have a positive outlook. “We also know getting kids involved in the kitchen teaches them new life skills and then they are more interested in healthy foods and eating well.”

This philosophy has influenced the development of the Playford Wellbeing Hub’s programs and services.

According to Martina the Playford Wellbeing Hub is a family friendly space to visit. “You can try new things, make new friendships and have fun,” she said. “It’s the New Year, come in and say hello and experience the programs for yourself.”

The Playford Wellbeing Hub is a partnership project between the City of Playford and the South Australian Government under the Wellbeing SA Statewide Wellbeing Strategy.

TESTING THE TRAIL Community enjoying the recently upgraded Smith Creek Trail in Craigmore.

Connecting with nature.

Beautiful green shaded spaces add to the value of any community, and we have some stellar spaces in Playford for you to connect with nature.

One of those spaces is the Smith Creek Trail, a family-friendly shared path that winds its way along the creek from Craigmore to Stebonheath Park at Andrews Farm. It is perfect for walking, scooting and cycling and thanks to the support of a State Government grant, 11 hectares of the trail were upgraded in late 2020.

Jo Park, Project Manager, said the upgrades will have longer term benefits for both the environment and residents. “It’s a huge natural space to manage, but by identifying the areas with the highest heat footprint, we can cool them down and improve the biodiversity with select understorey planting,” Jo said.

The planting has been undertaken in ‘pods’, under established trees along the trail. These grouped plantings are expected to improve soil and weed control, reduce pests, protect fauna, cool the area and encourage more people to use the space.

The shared path is now wheelchair-accessible, key areas have been mulched and in addition to the 4,000 plus plants which are already in, there will be future planting of more advanced trees in the Craigmore section to increase tree canopy shading along the trail over time.

Jo has already had plenty of feedback from locals who have stopped for chats on their daily walk.

“Some of the regulars remarked that it was feeling like ‘our very own Linear Park’ - we’re really pleased to hear that kind of feedback, and see the interest the project is generating,” she said. “It’s only going to get better in future years, and we encourage everyone to get onto the trail and watch it grow with us.”

The planting wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Playford Greening and Landcare Group, a marvellous volunteer organisation of people who are not afraid of getting their hands dirty. One of the volunteers who has worked on the pod plantings at the Smith Creek Trail is Touch Davies.

Touch, whose name rhymes with ‘push’, is a veteran volunteer who takes it one plant at a time. Her role with the Playford Greening and Landcare Group involves sowing seeds, tidying up areas, and planting. Touch (pictured right) said; “planting things is one way to feel connected to nature, and I feel like I’ve achieved something for people to enjoy. Every plant I put in will have a long life, I hope!”

Smith Creek Trail upgrade.

The Smith Creek Trail upgrade is a City of Playford project supported by the Playford Greening and Landcare Group and funding support of $59K from the Department of Environment and Water, and the Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure through the Greener Neighbourhood grants program. This project has been delivered with the help of Trees for Life and Greening Australia SA.

Safety first on One Tree Hill Road One Tree Hill Road, between Hannaford Hump Road and Shillabeer Road, is undergoing a reconstruction. The project will involve widening of the road, new line marking, and a signage upgrade to improve the safety of this section of One Tree Hill Road. The project is managed and delivered by both City of Playford and City of Tea Tree Gully as a joint partnership. Works commenced in early February and are expected to run until June this year.

We look forward to unveiling the much improved road in due course, and in the meantime, please take care while travelling in this area.

The State Government of South Australia’s Special Local Roads, Roads to Recovery Program has funded $1.1M of the $2.2M project. The City of Playford and City of Tea Tree Gully have each contributed $550K.

Footpaths galore.

As our suburbs age and urban footprint grows, the City of Playford aims to improve the liveability and connectivity in our neighbourhoods by renewing or replacing existing assets and infrastructure. As part of Council’s Capital Works Program, we identified areas that require the construction of new footpaths, or the renewal of existing footpaths. We earmarked over 13 kilometres of footpaths for upgrading or replacing in 2020/2021. The footpath program is well ahead of schedule and expected to be completed by the end of February.

GARDEN WASTE Local resident Kristie makes use of her green bin to clear her garden of weeds.

Kitchen to compost.

We often hear people say it doesn’t matter which bin you put your waste into. The truth is the smallest of changes to your household waste management can make a significant difference across the community.

If you have a green FOGO (food organics, garden organics) bin in Playford you’re one of around 20,000 households who do, and you’re in a prime position to help make some real change with your treatment of household food waste.

Playford residents with FOGO bins do a good job of using the bin to dispose of garden waste. However, there is currently too much food waste going into the red bin (around one third of the contents) which ends up in landfill – and that’s a double loss.

The first loss is environmental; when food waste goes to landfill it off-gases into greenhouse gases which is bad for the environment. If it goes into the green bin it is processed to create rich compost to use in our soils, which is great for the environment.

The second loss is financial; processing food waste is considerably more cost efficient when it goes into the green bin rather than the red. To process landfill costs five times more than the rate of organic waste.

Get a green bin.

Residents can purchase a FOGO green bin for $57. Get in touch with the Northern Adelaide Waste Management Association (NAWMA) online at nawma.sa.gov.au or by phone on 8259 2100.

So any piece of food you divert to your green bin is going to make a huge difference!

You can make sure fruit and vegetable scraps, paper towels, tissues, oily cardboard such as pizza boxes, meat waste, citrus peels, and even pet poo never end up in landfill. This simple change of routine by green bin users can make a significant impact in our community. The power is in your hands.

How do I view my transactions and rates notice online?

If you pay rates with the City of Playford, you can register your details to keep track of your balance, set up direct debit, see previous transactions, view your rate notices and make a payment online all via Playford Online Services.

You can set up your account today at reportandpay.playford.sa.gov.au.

How do I schedule a hard waste collection?

Every household in Playford is provided two free hard waste collection services each financial year. Resident’s can choose to either have it picked up from their property, or drop it off at one of Northern Adelaide Waste Management Authority (NAWMA’s) Resource Recovery Centres. You can even hire a trailer from NAWMA. Book a hard waste service or request a voucher direct from NAWMA at nawma.sa.gov.au or call 8259 2100.

Why should I microchip my pet?

Microchips save lives. In the unfortunate event your dog or cat ever gets separated from you, a microchip will ensure that your furry friend can be identified and returned to you as soon as possible.

Australia Day 2021.

Playford community came together to celebrate Australia Day at X Convenience Oval, home of the Central District Football Club.

Attendees enjoyed a free barbecue breakfast, while enjoying live performances, free rides and were able to have a go at netball, tennis or Australian rules football.

The Northern Sound System’s (NSS) summer program celebrated a jam-packed season full of activities.
