Un saúdo aos nosos moitos amigos de Tui! Van un agradecemento e un forte abrazo para Ángel Sánchez e Sara García Villanueva, codirectores de Play-Doc, e para ese equipo estelar co que contan, unha das razóns máis poderosas de que o cinema siga gozando de boa saúde. Aquí presentei as miñas películas Broken Noses e Let’s Get Lost e tivo lugar a estrea en España de Nice Girls Don’t Stay for Breakfast, o meu último traballo, centrado en Robert Mitchum. O equipo de Play-Doc axudoume moitísimo coa quenda de preguntas, sobre todo porque son moi tímido e ás veces me custa falar en público do bo dunha película propia e do que saíu ao revés. Un filme no que investiches anos de traballo nace, dalgunha maneira, nun festival de cinema, e vai gañando seguridade en si mesmo igual que un rapaz ou unha rapaza que xogan ao baloncesto tentando que os seus pais estean orgullosos deles.

Para min foi unha honra que me convidasen a Tui e, por unha vez, todo aquilo que un espera fíxose realidade. A xente faiche preguntas intelixentes e en ocasións alguén acaba namorado como un ollomol dalgunha das descoñecidas estrelas da película. Ao tempo que se exhibía Let’s Get Lost en Play-Doc, vin o magnífico documental de WolfEckart Bühler titulado Leuchtturm des Chaos, que trata dun dos meus actores favoritos, Sterling Hayden. Nela, Hayden é un personaxe, un personaxe de verdade, igual que Robert Mitchum o é na miña película, só que un fala demasiado e o outro apenas nada…

Wolf e eu felicitámonos mutuamente por seguirmos tendo «os pés na terra» e estarmos aquí para contalo.

Só nun festival como este ten un a posibilidade de ver un filme que estivo a piques de facer (sobre Sterling), se non fose porque Robert Mitchum me dixo que si e resulta que lle apetecía andar por alí e cantar algo e falar de mulleres. Así que o mellor consello que lle podo dar a quen vaia a este festival é o seguinte: tenta coñecer a Anxo, a Sara e o seu equipo, porque son os mellores gardacostas e protectores do mundo do cinema que vin en moito tempo. Cando a miña produtora, Eva Lindemann, nos contou á miña muller, Nan, e a min que esta parte de España é famosa polo seu excelente marisco, pensei: «Oh, non, pero se eu non como peixe!», e pasei uns días a base de ensaladas, galletas salgadas e patacas fritas, que foi unha boa maneira de adelgazar un pouco e ver unhas películas estupendas nuns lugares encantadores. Moitas grazas por esta marabillosa aventura.

Hi to our many friends in Tui. A thank you and a big hug goes out to Angel Sanchez and Sara Garcia Villanueva, co-directors of Play-Doc, and their stellar team, one of the best reasons why cinema today is alive and well. I presented my films Broken Noses and Let’s Get Lost and the first theatrical presentation in Spain of Nice Girls Don’t Stay for Breakfast, my newest film, about Robert Mitchum. The Play-Doc team was so helpful with Q and A’s, especially because I am very shy and sometimes it’s hard to talk in front of an audience about the good and upside-down things in one’s film. A film that you spend years working on somehow gets born at a film festival. It starts getting its own confidence like a guy or girl playing basketball trying to make their parents proud.

I was honored to be invited to Tui and for once all the things you hope for came true.

People ask you intelligent questions and sometimes a man or woman ends up having a big crush on one of the unknown stars of your film. At the same time that Let’s Get Lost was playing at Play-Doc I saw the wonderful documentary by Wolf-Eckart Buhler called The Lighthouse of Chaos. It’s about one of my favorite actors, Sterling Hayden. He’s a real character, just like Robert Mitchum is in my film. Only – one talks too much and the other one hardly says anything! Wolf and I congratulated each other for still having our “feet on the ground” and being here to tell the story.

Only at a film festival like this would you see a film you almost made (about Sterling), except that Robert Mitchum said “yes” to me and wanted to hang out and sing some songs and talk about women. So, the best advice I can give anyone that goes to this festival is this: try to meet Angel, Sara and their team. They are the best bodyguards and protectors of the film world I’ve seen in a long time. When my producer Eva Lindemann told my wife Nan and I that this part of Spain is known for it’s great seafood, I thought, “Oh, no, I don’t eat fish.” So, I lived for a few days on salads, pretzels and potato chips. It was a good way for me to lose some weight and see amazing cinema in enchanting surroundings. Thank you for the marvelous adventure.

Can I ever be invited back again? I promise to bring along my six dogs.

E, no entanto, ao longo dunha carreira profesional que agora facilmente abrangue seis décadas, nunca tivo valedor, nin se cultivou o estudo da súa obra, nin o seu nome acadou altos cumios, nin foi un autor cuxo último traballo se esperase sempre con ansia.

Os motivos son varios e teñen que ver coa escasa frecuencia da súa produción, así como coa duración dalgunhas das súas obras, que dificultou a súa distribución ou programación dentro das estruturas convencionais. Con todo, a razón máis importante probablemente radique en que o cinema de Kirchheimer nunca estivo de moda no tocante ao estilo. Cando en 1963 fixo o seu debut con Colossus on the River, causaba furor o cinema directo; unha estética e unha política de imaxes e sons que a el non lle daban esperanza ningunha. ight from the start, Manfred Kirchheimer was recognized as a major filmmaker – and yet, over the course of a career now easily six decades long, he got never championed, cultivated, turned into a name, an auteur whose latest work was always eagerly awaited.

The reasons for this are several and have to do with the infrequency of his output as well as some works’ length, which made them difficult to distribute or program inside conventional structures. Yet the probably most important one is that Kirchheimer’s cinema was never fashionable in terms of style. When he debuted with Colossus on the River in 1963, direct cinema was all the rage – an aesthetic as well as politic of images and sounds that never held any promise for him.

If one wants to put it in slightly polemical terms: direct cinema is all about society as spectacle, a liberal-minded play whose outcome might change from time to time but not the rules – while for Kirchheimer, human endeavour, mankind itself

Nova York móstrase case nun proceso de crecemento que transforma os bosques primixenios nunha «cidade situada na cima dun monte», cuxo futuro como ruína invadida polas herbas, os fentos e as árbores xa resulta visible para o ollo dun observador curioso. A referencia bíblica é acaída, pois a Kirchheimer encántalle amosar a arquitectura máis antiga de Nova York dunha forma que subliñe as súas semellanzas con esas catedrais góticas habitadas por infinidade de gárgolas, recordatorios todas elas da invariable natureza da gloria e a miseria humanas para aqueles que lle presten atención ao seu pétreo silencio omnisciente.

A Kirchheimer encántalle a grandiosidade, talvez porque a crean eses diminutos seres chamados humanos. Colossus on the River constitúe case un ensaio sobre esa particular relación: o SS United States —o meirande transatlántico construído nos EUA, así como o buque máis rápido do mundo entre os da súa clase— entra no porto de Nova York guiado polas manobras dun piloto que está ao mando dunha presa de remolcadores. O contraste resulta asombroso: un home capaz de ler a linguaxe das nubes e as ondas dirixe un feixe de pequenas embarcacións para elas efectuaren movementos minúsculos, con precaución pero tamén con decisión, que van salvagardar a seguridade e a integridade dun Behemot de aceiro e dos miles de persoas que fixeron del o seu fogar temporal, e todo isto baixo a mirada vixiante do seu pai intelectual, o arquitecto naval William Francis Gibb, quen, segundo afirman as crónicas, sempre está aí cando o barco chega á casa. is but fleeting, as can be witnessed, by the way, in e.g. Claw. A Fable (1968) or Up the Lazy River (2020). New York is shown as almost growing from primeval forests to a City on a Hill whose future as a ruin overgrown with grasses, ferns and trees is already visible to the curious eye.

The biblical reference is apt as Kirchheimer loves to show the older architecture of New York in a way that stresses its similarities with Gothic cathedrals inhabited by gargoyles galore – reminders of the unchanging nature of human glory and misery to those who pay attention to their all-knowing stony silence.

Kirchheimer loves grandeur, maybe because it’s created by those tiny beings called humans.

Colossus on the River is almost an essay on that particular relationship: the SS United States – the biggest ocean liner built in the USA as well as the fastest ship in the world of its kind – is manoeuvred into New York Harbour by a pilot commanding a handful of tugboats. The contrast is staggering: one man able to read the language of clouds and waves directs a bunch of small vessels to do cautious yet decisive minuscule movements that will protect the safety and integrity of a steel behemoth and the thousands that made it their temporary home – all under the watchful eyes of its intellectual father, naval architect William Francis Gibbs, who, the commentary claims, is always there when the ship arrives home. An ocean liner coming in from an Atlantic crossing was still a rather ordinary sight to New Yorkers of the time – and yet, the writing was on the wall: this mode of travelling won’t be too long any more for this world. Six years after the film was made, the SS United States got withdrawn from service after its 400th journey – air travel had taken over by then. It’s difficult to not read any deeper meanings into all this, including the demise of American power and influence in the world – towards the end of ‘63, President Kennedy will be assassinated, while the war in Vietnam escalates and escalates. The film’s maybe most overwhelming shot shows a Black sailor against the gigantic Stars and Stripes floating in the wind – a last salute to an empire collapsing.

Did Kirchheimer arrive in the United States on a ship like the SS United States? After his birth in Saarbrücken in 1931, his family left the German Reich in 1936, when it became only too clear how serious the ruling Nazi party was about its 7

Chegou Kirchheimer aos Estados Unidos a bordo dun buque como o SS United States? Tras o seu nacemento en Saarbrücken en 1931, a súa familia abandonou o Reich alemán en 1936, cando ficou patente, e como, o moi en serio que tomaba o partido dirixente, o nazi, a súa política de sometemento dos cidadáns xudeus da nación, a saber: os pavillóns de exterminio. Tamén as vían vir? Así foi como os Kirchheimer fixeron de Nova York o seu fogar. Canto de Saarbrücken seguiu vivo en Manfred Kirchheimer? Canto lembra el dos seus primeiros anos nese outro país?

En Nova York Kirchheimer asistiu á escola e despois tamén á universidade, onde o seu mentor foi outro refuxiado alemán: o pioneiro do dadaísmo e axioma da animación abstracta Hans Richter, quen fundou o Institute of Film Techniques (Instituto de Técnicas Cinematográficas) do City College. Se ben Richter constituíu, sen dúbida, unha figura de relevancia para Kirchheimer, porque foi el quen o encamiñou, a experiencia práctica que adquiriu traballando con Leo Hurwitz na década de 1960 probablemente resultase máis importante para o seu exercer cinematográfico. De certo, o Essay on Death: A Memorial to John F. Kennedy (1964) de Hurwitz reflicte unha fonda afinidade entre ambos na maneira en que se amosa e se dramatiza a natureza, e en como se subliña a evanescencia da vida mediante a presenza de formas gargolescas e obras de arte como a escultura de 1953 Variacións nunha esfera, núm. 10: o sol, de Richard Lippold, aos que lles dedicarían un filme propio dous anos despois. Eles, como corresponsables, figuran entre ducias de persoas máis, na súa maioría destacadas figuras da vangarda, na longa nómina de contribuíntes ao monumento de propaganda política For Life, Against the War, de 1967.

Ao ano seguinte tería lugar a estrea de Claw. A Fable (codirector: Walter Hess), a cinta que consolidaría o modo de expresión máis celebrado de Kirchheimer: a coreografía sinfónica de imaxes e sons, que tamén caracteriza Bridge High (1975; 8

policies subjugating the nation’s Jewish citizenry – extermination wards. Was that writing also on the wall? Thus, the Kirchheimers made New York their new home. How much of Saarbrücken did stay with Manfred Kirchheimer, how much does he remember of his first years in that other country?

Kirchheimer went to school in New York, and then to university there as well, where his mentor was another German émigré: Dada pioneer and abstract animation axiom Hans Richter, who founded the City College’s Institute of Film Techniques. While Richter was certainly of significance for Kirchheimer as he put him on his tracks, the practical experience he gained from working with Leo Hurwitz in the 60s was probably more important for his filmmaking practice.

Hurwitz’ Essay on Death: A Memorial to John F. Kennedy (1964) certainly shows a deep kinship between the two in the way nature is shown and dramatized, and how the evanescence of life gets stressed by the presence of gargoylesque shapes as well as artworks like Richard Lippold’s 1953 sculpture Variations within a Sphere, #10: The Sun, to whom and which they’d dedicate a film of its own two years on. Playing a co-responsible role, they appear among dozens of others, avantgarde luminaries mostly, on the long contributors' roll call for the 1967 agitprop monument For Life, Against the War. The following year would see to the release of Claw. A Fable (co-director: Walter Hess), the film to establish the Kirchheimer mode of expression most widely celebrated: the symphonic choreography of images and sounds, which also characterizes Bridge High (1975; co-director: Walter Hess), Stations of the Elevated (1980), in some chapters Tall: The American Skyscraper and Louis Sullivan (2004) and Art Is… The Permanent Revolution (2012), and then again the whole and all of Dreams of a City (2018), Free Time (2019), Up the Lazy River and One More Time (2021), the latter four made in good parts using material from his earlier films and shoots. Kirchheimer establishes himself here as a heir to the likes of Walter Ruttmann, Albrecht Viktor Blum or the Kaufman family in its aesthetic diversity – while going one or two steps further than all of them by making time, considered at an epic scale, the subject of his montages, which sometimes takes the shape of the above-described movement from the antediluvian to the high modern, then

Aquí Kirchheimer establécese como herdeiro de nomes como Walter Ruttmann, Albrecht Viktor Blum ou a familia Kaufman na súa diversidade estética, e simultaneamente vai un ou dous pasos por diante de todos eles ao converter o tempo, considerado a escala épica, no obxecto das súas montaxes, que por veces adopta a forma do movemento, antes descrito, que decorre do antediluviano á alta modernidade e que outras veces cristaliza en algo tan básico pero fundamental como os trens cubertos de pintadas que avanzan pola vasteza urbana como signos dos tempos que están por chegar. Neste punto, literalmente, un veas vir. Nas súas obras máis recentes, o tempo como obxecto está arraigado na textura das propias imaxes, igual que nas modas das épocas ou nos edificios que agora un sabe que xa son cousa do pasado. Esta modalidade, cunhas paisaxes sonoras coidadosamente elaboradas e unha imaxinería espectacular que mostra con orgullo a fascinación de Kirchheimer pola gloria gráfica da arte impresa, é o que máis se achega ao que se denomina cinema puro.

Dito isto, podería afirmarse que as obras máis ricas de Kirchheimer son as de maior complexidade formal, o cal sempre significa que, nalgunha medida, efectivamente empregan a linguaxe de maneira fértil e evocadora, empezando por Colossus on the River, seguindo co seu magnum opus We Were So Beloved (1986) e chegando por fin a Tall: The American Skyscraper and Louis Sullivan e Art Is… The Permanent Revolution.

Pero atención: estas non son as únicas cintas do autor nas que se traballa coas palabras. Así, Daughters (2020), por exemplo, non está constituída por case máis nada que palabras, mentres que a súa solitaria incursión na ficción, Short Circuit (1973), posúe moito diálogo, aínda que vaia encamiñado cara a unha longa secuencia de montaxe que ten lugar na mente do protagonista e na que se recorre case exclusivamente a sons e imaxes para insinuar unhas preocupacións e unha paranoia que van en aumento: o seu racismo burgués.

othertimes crystallizes into something so basic yet fundamental as the sprayed trains moving through the urban vastness as signs of the times to come – the writing is here quite literally on the walls; in his most recent works, time as a subject is ingrained in the textures of the images themselves, just as it is in the fashions of the days or the buildings one now knows to be gone. This mode, with its carefully created soundscapes and dramatic imagery that proudly shows Kirchheimer’s fascination with the graphic glory of printing art, is closest to what one calls pure cinema.

That said: Kirchheimer’s arguably richest works are the formally more complex ones, which always means that to some degree they do use language in a rich and evocative way, starting with Colossus on the River, then his magnum opus We Were So Beloved (1986) to finally Tall: The American Skyscraper and Louis Sullivan and Art Is… The Permanent Revolution. Mind that these aren’t his only films to work with words – Daughters (2020), e.g., is almost only words, while his lone foray into fiction, Short Circuit (1973), has a lot of dialogue even if it’s headed towards a long montage sequence in the protagonist’s head that uses almost exclusively sounds and images to suggest his growing anxieties and paranoia – his bourgeois racism.

Which connects it uneasily yet intimately with We Were So Beloved, a portrayal of the Jewish émigré community in Washington Heights at the far end of Manhattan – the world of Kirchheimer’s family, whose memories and opinions form the film’s core. Almost everybody here has lost next of kin to the Nazi death machine; some even survived being deported into an extermination camp. But as Kirchheimer has to find out: having escaped one of the 20th century’s worst atrocities didn’t humble everybody into a better human being – prejudices, e.g., are still there, with the Blacks of neighbouring Harlem getting sometimes perceived in ways not too dissimilar from that of the Polish and Russian (later Soviet) Jews back in Germany during the 10s, 20s, 30s: backwards and/or poor, in that a threat to their own position in society, the way they (still) feel perceived by the goyim majority. In many ways they remained who they always were – history barely touched them. And as Short Circuit, which can be read as a tacit portray in grey and black of Kirchheimer himself, brutally suggests: even trying to bridge 9

Aquí case todos perderon algún parente a mans da máquina nazi da morte; algúns mesmo sobreviviron á deportación a un campo de exterminio. Pero, como Kirchheimer ten que descubrir, escapar a unha das maiores atrocidades do século XX non lle deu a todo o mundo unha lección de humildade que o fixese mellor ser humano: os prexuízos, por exemplo, seguen aí, e os negros do veciño Harlem por veces son percibidos dun xeito non moi distinto de como se vía en Alemaña aos xudeus polacos e rusos (despois soviéticos) durante as décadas de 1910, 1920 e 1930: atrasados, pobres ou ambas as cousas, e por iso mesmo unha ameaza á súa propia posición na sociedade, é como senten (aínda) que os percibe a maioría dos goyim. En moitos sentidos, seguen a ser os que sempre foron; a historia apenas os tocou.

E, como apunta con brutalidade Short Circuit, que pode interpretarse como un retrato tácito, en gris e negro, do propio Kirchheimer: mesmo o intento de salvar a fenda, o intento de superar as divisións de clase e raza, pode ser percibido como algo condescendente por aqueles que tal intentan. O único que lle queda a un por facer é apuntarse aos actos de solidariedade e apoio e engulir a escuridade que leva dentro, íntegra e completamente, xa que, ao cabo, esta non é máis que outra forma de autoodio e autocompaixón, e tamén de orgullo, emocións que nunca axudaron a ninguén. Encaixa, pois, que Kirchheimer non descubrise ata acabar We Were So Beloved que algunhas cousas eran máis complicadas do que contaban os seus entrevistados. Nunha escena que se ten citado con moita frecuencia, o seu pai di que probablemente non lle salvaría a vida a ninguén, porque se tiña por covarde; non foi ata máis adiante cando Kirchheimer chegou a saber que o seu proxenitor si lle dera refuxio para pasar a noite a outro xudeu escapado, e obviamente coidaba que aquilo non fora nada, o que dá unha idea do que significaba o valor para este home en concreto: moito. Advírtase que Kirchheimer nunca fai un Lanzmann ou un Ophüls á hora de presentar a súa familia en particular e a comunidade de Washington Heights en xeral: poida que lles dea voz ás súas propias opinións e pensamentos, e cara ao final da cinta, en 10

the gap, trying to overcome divides of class and race, can be perceived as condescending by those who try. The only thing that remains to do is to go with the acts of solidarity and support, and to swallow the darkness inside wholly and totally, for in the end, this is also only another form of selfloathing and -pity, and also pride – emotions that never helped anybody. It thus fits that Kirchheimer found out only after finishing We Were So Beloved that some things were more complicated than his interviewees let on. In a very often quoted scene, his father says that he’d probably not have saved anybody, for he thought of himself as a coward; only later did Kirchheimer learn that his father did shelter a fellow Jew on the run for a night; obviously he thought this was nothing – which gives an idea of what courage meant to this one man: a lot. Mind that Kirchheimer never goes Lanzmann or Ophüls in the way he presents his family in particular and the Washington Heights community in general: he might voice his opinions and thoughts, and towards the end of the film certainly summarizes his insights, but he’s never overtly judgemental – while he might sense some capital-t truths he’s too humble and generous, too much a Mensch to condemn others. And while he voices his disdain for all the Germans who collaborated with the Nazis if only through their passivity, he lets several US Americans his own age talk about this country’s history of persecutions, and how its citizens too often failed under far less terrorizing circumstances.

Humans are mainly weak – and yet, as a collective they can very well defy their insignificance to create culture and progress, grow together beyond the boundaries of one, claim dominion over realms of the spirit and the soul their forefathers often would not have been able to conceive. On a formal level Tall: The American Skyscraper and Louis Sullivan and Art Is… The Permanent Revolution might be the more refined, multi-layered and ever-surprising achievements of Manfred Kirchheimer – but when it comes to the human spirit, few ever saw more greatness in it than he did in We Were So Beloved.

The film is filled with motifs that Kirchheimer has made his own: the camera traveling majestically through building, pointing skyward, light reflecting off glass, sweeping through the streets filming storefronts and daily life, always with an uncanny ability to capture small moments between neighbors, and the faces of a metropolis, culminating to the ecstatic sound of Louis Prima and the peaceful sounds of the river. Look close: you will even catch a glimpse of Manny himself.

ll films are documentaries of their own making, but Bette Gordon’s run of films from 1974 to 1983 document the emergence of a new era in radical filmmaking.

Gordon was still a student in 1974 when she began collaborating with James Benning in Madison, WI. Their first collaborations, Michigan Avenue (1974) and I-94 (1974), use a structuralist approach to portraiture. In Michigan Avenue three short shots are drawn out through an optical printing process where each still frame was rephotographed 60 times and then dissolved into the next. As the scenes become progressively more intimate, the sound track becomes more abstract and the subjects less scructable, culminating in a woman slowly rolling off the bed while her lover watches unmoved. I-94 explores similar thematic and technical terrain, using optical printing to alternate images of a man and woman so that they appear to be walking toward each other.

Their overlapping dialog increases the sense of alienation: two people talking past each other, in the same place but never in the same frame.

In "Bette Gordon: I Like To Watch", an interview for the Criterion Channel, Gordon discusses the influence of Michael Snow on this early work:

“What is a story even? Does a story have to be in front of the lens? Could it be around it and beside it?” Gordon and Benning’s work fuses the playfulness and precision of structuralist strategies with the more straightforwardly political. In I-94, the man and woman talk about their gendered experiences in work and life; in The United States of America (1975), the third and final collaboration between the artists, a fixed camera mounted in the backseat of a car captures the American landscape as snippets of radio take the temperature of the country from New York City to Los Angeles. Shot in 1976, the radio captures a steady stream of AM Gold, punctuated by news reports on the end of America’s involvement in Vietnam, the kidnapping of Patty Hearst, and the celebration of the country’s bicentennial.

Gordon and Benning rigged a Bolex to the back seat in such a way that the entire car essentially became a camera. They drove across the country maneuvering the windshield to frame whatever they wanted the camera to see. Now, nearly 50 years later, the soundscape is the star of the show, but Gordon and Benning are silhouetted in the foreground of every shot: shifting in their seats, communicating with a point or a nod as they operate their car-camera, and gazing out the window. It’s a film that foregrounds its making, but Benning and Gordon’s active roles as filmmakers are coupled with their roles as passengers: avatars for the audience as the sights and sounds of 1976 wash over them.

The United States of America is the ne plus ultra of the American road movie, complete with great tunes and desolate desert landscapes. Breaking a genre down to its essential components echoes the structural parameters Gordon and Benning imposed on their earlier work. In Gordon’s solo work, this interest in genre motifs and more traditional narrative structures took hold. You can see Gordon developing her new vernacular in 1980’s Empty Suitcases. As in the earlier work, there is a focus on people in their environments, but Gordon pays special attention to the way women create their spaces and their selves: the music they play, the outfits they try on, the way they move in their homes. Several women perform as a single fractured protagonist, trying to get a hold of the ever shifting circumstances of their lives: relationships slowly ending, political solidarity and upheaval, and creative uncertainty.

are cast as a sort of spy thriller, with cataclysmic and definitive action hinted at from the start.

There is an interiority to the figures in this film that is unlike the Benning collaborations. Gordon plays with the tension between the women’s narration and their physical presence, eventually allowing them to embody their inner world.

As one slide says, “That old feeling erupted again. The dislocation between her sense of self inside and her behavior outside. Clear and undeniable. I felt as though I could never bring them together.” While Empty Suitcases and her other previous work took an experimental approach to representing women on screen, in 1980, Gordon made Variety, her most narratively conventional film to date. Laura Mulvey’s Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema was published a year before Gordon made her first film, and it seems impossible not to talk about how her work relates to the massive public discourse around the representation of women that ensued over the following decade.

Variety (1984) employs a Hitchcockian plot that involves a young woman taking a job in the box office of a porn theater and becoming increasingly obsessed with following one of the theater’s patrons. In Empty Suitcases and Anybody’s Woman (1981), a companion piece to Variety, Gordon captures a downtown bohemia populated by fascinating women (each film is a veritable who’s-who of contemporary artists), but Variety shows the way that this niche is enveloped by a world of men that is largely unaware of any utopian impulses in downtown New York. In one scene Gordon alternates shots of the man Christine has been following as he meets with business associates all over town, sealing their relationship with a handshake each time, with a static shot of Christine on a massage table as she engages in a meditation that puts her in closer contact with her own body. This scene is a turning point in the film, and Christine emerges from that session with the wherewithal for confrontation; however, the film ends on an inconclusive note.

Gordon has flipped nearly a hundred years of film grammar to create a female character on screen who isn’t just watched, but one who likes to watch, a real voyeuse. Once a woman has gained the power to become the beholder instead of the beheld, the next question is obvious: what do you want to do with it? As Christine says in the final moments of Variety, “I don’t exactly know that right now, but I’ll know when I see you.”

Christine, a bright and unassuming young woman, takes a job selling tickets at a porno movie theater near Times Square. Instead of distancing herself from the dark and erotic nature of this milieu, Christine soon develops an obsession that begins to consume her life. asa o tempo mentres flúe o río polas húmidas terras do bosque tropical das zonas centrais do Perú. Nas beiras do Sepa atópase un conxunto de casas, cabanas dispersas, unha aldea «de ribeira» normal nesta parte do mundo, pero nesta historia o que se ve non é o que parece. Tal comunidade ribeirega é un cárcere. Sepa, Nuestro Señor de los Milagros, foi unha colonia penal ao aire libre establecida en plena selva e coñecida como o Inferno Verde, onde o Goberno peruano enviaba os delincuentes máis perigosos como forma suprema de castigo.

Sepa, Nuestro Señor de los Milagros, é o nome dunha colonia penal ao aire libre creada polo Goberno peruano en 1951, no cadro dos labores nacionais de colonización dos territorios amazónicos mediante o fomento das prácticas agrícolas entre os presos, nun terreo de 37.000 hectáreas situado nas selvas das áreas centrais do Perú. O documental de 1987 dirixido por Walter Saxer é a única fiestra aberta a esta colonia penal experimental peruana, onde non entrou nunca unha cámara e sobre a que pouco se escribiu.

Foi clausurada en 1993, aínda que nela ficou un único preso ata acabar de cumprir condena no ano 2003. Na actualidade estes terreos aprovéitaos o Instituto Nacional Penitenciario do Perú (INPE) para a cría de gando.

ime passes as the river flows through the humid lands of Central Peru’s rainforest. On the river banks of the Sepa River is a group of houses, sparse huts, a normal “rivera” village in this part of the world, but what you see is not what it seems in this story. This river bank community is a prison. Sepa, Nuestro Señor de los Milagros was an open air penal colony in the middle of the jungle, known as the Green Hell, where the Peruvian Government sent its most dangerous criminals as the ultimate form of punishment.

Sepa, Nuestro Señor de los Milagros is the name of an open-air penal colony created in 1951 by the Peruvian Government within the national effort to colonize the Amazon territories by promoting agricultural practices amongst inmates in a 37,000-hectare piece of land in the jungles of Central Peru. The 1987 documentary directed by Walter Saxer is the only window into this experimental penal colony in Peru, which no camera has ever entered and little has been written about. The penal colony was closed in 1993 even though one single inmate remained to finish his sentence there until 2003. Today this land is used to raise cattle by the Peruvian National Penitentiary Institute (INPE).

The film begins with the violent live broadcast of a dramatic mutiny of a prison in Lima, El Sexto, where uprising inmates take and kill hostages, outcrying their demands to be recognized as humans in the terrifying conditions that state prisons create. The dry lands surrounding Lima are quickly left to enter the lush landscapes through rivers and forests that lead to Sepa.

Here inmates are free to walk, free to bring their families, free to dance and cook together. Some, damaged by drugs and the abuse received in other prisons are able to regain their humanity.

The film, the filmmaker Walter Saxer and the man behind the words that narrate this story, the Peruvian Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, reflect on the condition of the inmate, the institution of prisons within society and the discrepancy there is between the idea that originally was behind this open-air penal colony and its actual reality. But the film doesn’t provide solutions; if anything, the film poses questions and lets the life in this strange place forgotten by the world speak for itself.

annah Arendt escribiu no seu día que o xuízo de Eichmann lle ensinou ao mundo a banalidade do mal. No que toca aos responsables da guerra de Vietnam, este termo podería inverterse: eles ensináronnos o mal da banalidade.

A guerra terminou, pero nalgunhas persoas as lembranzas seguen a arder sen chama. Nadal de 1984, Bangkok (Tailandia). John Scott, veterano afroamericano da contenda, vai á procura de si mesmo e regresa ao lugar do acto. Como un delincuente, como un amante… Agardando polo seu visado para Vietnam, atópase cunha escura festa de Nadal que ten lugar nun pequeno bar situado en pleno distrito do entretemento de Bangkok. Os invitados son compatriotas: mercenarios, axentes da CIA, antigos membros das forzas armadas. Así, John Scott chega a saber da existencia de varios miles de veteranos da guerra de Vietnam que non retornaron aos EUA e agora viven en Tailandia.

Quen son estes homes? Por que quedaron? Que fan nun país que debe de lembrarlles a aquel onde mataron e onde eles mesmos case resultaron mortos? Que significa para eles esta guerra, tantos anos despois? Cheo de confusión e curiosidade, John Scott búscaos. annah Arendt once wrote that the Eichmann trial taught the world the banality of evil. For the people responsible for the war in Vietnam this term could be inverted: they have taught us the evil of banality.

The war is over, but in some the memories continue to smolder. Christmas 1984, Bangkok, Thailand. John Scott, an African American Vietnam war vet, is searching for himself and returns to the scene of the act. Like a criminal, like a lover… Waiting for his visa for Vietnam, he encounters an obscure Christmas party in a small bar in the middle of Bangkok’s entertainment district. The guests are compatriots: mercenaries, CIA agents, former GIs. John Scott learns of the existence of several thousand Vietnam War vets who never returned to the US and are now living in Thailand.

Who are these men? Why have they remained?

What are they doing in a country that must remind them of the one where they had killed and almost were killed themselves? What does this war mean to them, so many years later? Confused and curious, John Scott searches for them. He finds them everywhere: in bars and brothels, at beaches and in slums, on the paddy fields and not far from former air bases. For over a dozen years, the Americans have not only used Thailand as a “recreation center” for their GIs in Vietnam, but also as an “aircraft carrier” for the bombarding of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. And he didn‘t know anything about that?

Os protagonistas do filme, o actor estadounidense John Anderson (figura principal de Ashes and Embers de Haile Gerima) e a tailandesa Gillian Tuyudee, interprétanse a si mesmos: John Anderson serviu dous anos como soldado en Vietnam, en 1969 e 1970, e Gillian T. Hornett é filla dun membro das forzas armadas estadounidenses. Todas as demais persoas que aparecen no filme son o que son de verdade: propietarios de bares e xornalistas, agricultores e badanas, bailarinas e traballadoras do sexo, boxeadores tailandeses e mercenarios… Cada un deles, e cada un ao seu xeito, vítima dunha guerra á que deben a súa existencia; enigmáticas testemuñas clandestinas dun pasado que se encontra aquí e alí, indesexado e reprimido; estranxeiros e carentes de fogar nun país que poida que lles dese abeiro ou un lugar onde vivir, pero nunca un fogar de verdade.

A guerra de Vietnam deixou moitas vítimas e algunhas teñen que seguir vivindo co que experimentaron… O solitario deambular de John Scott por Bangkok e Tailandia, os seus encontros e debates constitúen un excurso sobre a culpa, a impotencia e a represión. E talvez sobre a esperanza.

in Thailand, she tells him accusingly. Increasingly more bitter and introverted, Samai guides him through a world he surely wouldn’t have known without her. The more she starts to learn about herself, the more he begins to understand as well.

John Scott decides to turn back. He will try finding himself at home.

The film’s protagonists, American actor John Anderson (main actor in Haile Gerima’s Ashes and Embers) and Thai Gillian Tuyudee Hornett, play themselves: John Anderson served as a soldier in Vietnam for two years, in 1969 and 1970, and Gillian T. Hornett is the child of a GI. All the other people in the film are what they really are: bar owners and journalists, farmers and slackers, dancers and sex workers, Thai boxers and mercenaries… Every one of them and each in their own way a victim of the war they owe their existence to; clandestine uncanny witnesses of a past that is here and there unwanted and suppressed; foreign and homeless in a country that may have given them shelter or a place to live, but never a real home.

The Vietnam War has left many victims behind and some of these have to continue living with what they experienced… John Scott’s lonely wanderings through Bangkok and Thailand, his encounters and discussions are an excursus on guilt, powerlessness and suppression. And maybe on hope.

A border inspection at Ventimiglia, between Italy and France, turns into a fantastical fairy tale narrated by a chorus of frogs. In this tale, a scientist experiments a human rejuvenation cure using monkey testicles. Doctor Voronoff actually and factually DID exist. Back in the “roaring twenties” his fame had been planetary. Songs were composed about him, and sung at the Folies Bergères of Paris and the Sambas of Rio de Janeiro's Carnival. Mikhail Bulgakov wrote "Heart of a Dog" inspired by him.

And Mussolini declared that he wanted to "Voronoff" all of Italy… His villa stands on the border where thousands of migrants had been blocked..

Con 12 anos, mentres tentaba escapar das explosións, rexistrei a destrución da miña cidade cunha cámara de vídeo. Vinte anos despois atópome con eses arquivos. A ameaza do polo industrial e militar aínda persiste no presente.

On November 3, 1995, the emblematic industry of my city, the Río Tercero Military Factory, Córdoba, exploded. Thousands of projectiles were fired at the town that produced them. At the age of 12, while trying to escape the explosions, I recorded the destruction of my city with a video camera. Twenty years later I find those files. The threat of the industrial and military pole still persists in the present.

Aos seus 63 anos e case xubilado, Joaquim vese obrigado a cumprir as regras da oficina de emprego para poder cobrar o paro. A pesar de saber que nunca máis vai volver a traballar, ten que ir de empresa en empresa pedindo selos que atestigüen que pasou por aí buscando traballo. Nestes traxectos rememora a súa vida como inmigrante nos Estados Unidos, onde traballou como taxista na cidade de Nova York e onde presenciou numerosas caídas da bolsa de Wall Street.

At 63 years old and almost retired, Joaquim is forced to follow job centre rules so he can collect unemployment benefits. Despite knowing that he will never return to active life, he must go from company to company asking for stamps to attest that he is looking for work. In these trips he reminisces about his life as an immigrant to the U.S., where he worked as a cab driver in New York and witnessed numerous Wall Street crashes.

Ao xuntar as súas palabras cuns materiais en 16 mm e uns carretes de fotos vellos que un amigo cubano pedírame revelar, as imaxes empezaron a arder e a súa ignición propiciou preguntas sobre que son os recordos, como se arquivan e se preservan, e cales se esfuman sen deixar pegada. Segundo Didi Huberman, mirar unha imaxe require poder discernir o lugar onde arde.

I called my mother with a very specific question, and the conversation ended up having the structure of a potencial film. When blending her words with some old 16mm footage and some photography rolls a cuban friend had asked me to develop, the images started to burn, and their ignition posed questions about the nature of memories, how do we archive and preserve them, and which ones vanish without leaving a trace. According to Didi Huberman, to look at an image requires being able to discern the place where it burns.

Na provincia de Ourense festéxase cada ano unha das formas máis antigas de Entroido. Ao longo de varios días celébranse folións, corredoiros e baixadas con felos, cigarróns, pantallas e peliqueiros, figuras que visten espectaculares traxes, que inclúen grotescas máscaras e cintos dos que colgan grandes e sonoras chocas, e que corren polas aldeas batendo nos visitantes coa súas fustas. Outra tradición é a farrapada, unha batalla na que os participantes se lanzan os uns aos outros bandallos enchoupados en lama. Tamén se combate unha guerra anárquica na que se arroxa fariña, formigas, cinsas e toxos sobre os participantes, mentres un enorme himenóptero se eleva desafiante sobre a multitude. Os singulares festexos, alumados con fachos e acompañados do estrondo de tambores, fílmanse de modo envolvente neste documental: é coma se o propio espectador estivese cercado polos esmorguistas, inmerso nun antigo ritual pagán. As multitudinarias escenas nocturnas, con aglomeracións de xente a miúdo apiñadas, adquiren un significado adicional ao saber que esta celebración tivo lugar a finais de febreiro, só dez días antes do primeiro caso confirmado de Covid-19 en Galicia.

In Galicia, Spain’s most northwestern region, one of the oldest forms of Carnival takes place every year.

Spread over several days are parades with felos and peliqueiros, characters who wear spectacular outfits, including a striking mask and a belt strung with large cowbells. Another tradition is the farrapada, in which participants pelt each other with rags covered in mud. There is also a fight in which flour and ants are thrown on the participants, and a huge model ant towers above the crowd.

The peculiar celebrations, lit by torches and accompanied by drums, are compellingly filmed in this short documentary — it is as if you were standing among the revelers yourself, immersed in an ageold pagan ritual. The nighttime scenes of a partying crowd, often packed tightly together, gain extra significance in the knowledge that this celebration took place in late February, just ten days before the first confirmed case of Covid-19 in the region.

Negro púrpura portrays 20th century Galicia through the cláviceps purpúrea, a hallucinogenic fungus that grows on cereals, which opens the door to a story as curious, surprising and unknown as it is important to the evolution of our culture, and the economy of an era. Ergot, smut… this fungus with a thousand names connects us with the rest of the world and feeds stories from the next-door neighbour, to pharmaceutical multinationals and the CIA; from medieval plagues, through popular medicine, to LSD. Scattered tales that leave a bitter taste of rye and reverberate across oceans. A crust that holds a delirious crumb.

She searches for a sign, one that leads her to the Álvarez ceramics factory. Steps lost to the rubble yet, at the same time, an experience full of questions, of the passage of time, of the different states of disappearance that lead to death but which, paradoxically, appear as living memory of a traumatic rupture. A poster as an act of invocation for a departed factory town, an industrial heritage overshadowed by crisis and speculation. The body in movement, and in solidarity, as acts of hope.

And film, resin and gold, that rebuilds the fractures of the past.

Memorias de ultramar é un documental realizado con imaxes rodadas por familias que viviron nas colonias, provincias e territorios baixo dominio español entre 1940 e 1975. Unha sucesión de instantáneas propias de quen se traslada a outro país e configura o seu novo fogar. O álbum pasa as súas páxinas e en determinados momentos a proxección detense, o editor rebobina, amplía, analiza e busca ecos dentro do material familiar. Que temas se repiten? Como se filma a natureza, o traballo, a muller, as materias primas? Cal é a posición do outro no encadre? Existe algunha pegada do colonial nas imaxes domésticas?

Overseas is a documentary made with images shot by families who lived in the colonies, provinces and territories under Spanish rule between 1940 and 1975. It is basically a succession of snapshots of the kind taken by people who move to another country and set up home there. The album flicks through the pages, and at times the screening stops and the editor rewinds, enlarges, analyses and looks for recurrent themes in the family material. What themes are repeated? How are Nature, work, women, or raw materials portrayed? What is the subject’s position in the frame? Is there some trace of the colonial element in the domestic images?

Ao mesmo tempo, centos de desprazados provocados polo conflito comezan a adquirir en Tblisi as prometidas vivendas gubernamentais. Non obstante, a Dani, Gio e Vika, de 11 anos, cústalles asumir que terán que separarse e abandoar o barrio no que medraron. E, en Grecia, Alia e Hussein, que fuxiron da guerra en Siria, agardan con arela a reunificación familiar e o reencontro coa súa filla Zozan desde Polykastro, un limbo do que non é sinxelo saír.

In Sarajevo, Mirsada and her daughter have survived for twenty-five years in a collective centre, awaiting a definitive accommodation solution that never arrives. In Georgia, hundreds of people displaced by the Abkhazia war are starting to receive the promised government housing in Tbilisi.

However, it is hard for Dani, Gio and Vika, aged eleven, to accept they’ll have to separate and leave their neighbourhood where they grew up. And in Greece, Alia and Hussein – who fled the war in Syria – anxiously wait to be reunited with their daughter Zozan from Polykastro, a limbo that is not easy to escape.

Cursou estudos de posgrao na Escola Superior de Arquitectura e Belas Artes, na Universidade Europea de Madrid e ten un Máster en Estudos Cinematográficos pola Universidade Sorbona Nova de París. Ademais estudou Performance, Escenografía e Instalación, Filoloxía Clásica e Ciencias Económicas nas universidades de Valencia, Coímbra e Lisboa. As súas películas foron mostradas e recibiron premios en festivais internacionais como Torino FF, IndieLisboa, Doclisboa, o festival Curtas Vila do Conde e o Festival Internacional de Curtametraxes de Capalbio. Escribiu tamén guións, obras de teatro, ensaio e poesía, polos que recibiu recoñecementos como o Premio Beaumarchais-SACD.

A súa segunda longametraxe, Querência (2019), producida por Walter Salles, estreouse mundialmente na Berlinale e gañou o Premio á Mellor Película na 20ª edición do Festival de Cinema de Jeonju, en Corea do Sur. Filmmaker and scriptwriter. His films have received more than 60 prizes and have been premiered at

international film festivals and museums such as Venice Film Festival, Berlinale, Locarno, Toronto, IFFR, San Sebastian, Sundance, Centre Georges Pompidou and MoMA, among others. He has also worked as Latin American Correspondent for the Locarno IFF. Girimunho (2011) his first feature made its world premiere at the 68th Venice Film Festival where it was honored with the Interfilm award. In 2012 Vila do Conde ISFF presented a retrospective of his work, as well as the German Cinemateque Arsenal in 2014.

His second feature film Querência (2019), produced by Walter Salles, made its world premiere at Berlinale and won the Best Picture Prize at the 20th Jeonju IFF in South Korea. He is currently working on his new film Se vens por bem podes entrar, se vens por mal põe-te a cavar, produced by Luís Urbano.

ELISA PEREIRA VARELA Cursou estudos de Realización Audiovisual na Escola de Imaxe e Son de Bemposta, en Ourense, e de Fotografía Artística na tamén ourensá Escola de Arte e Superior de Deseño Antonio Faílde. Desde que finalizou os estudos, xeralmente os seus traballos estiveron relacionados co sector audiovisual e desde 2014 dirixe o proxecto La Plantación. Encuentros y Conocimiento, unha iniciativa privada sen vinculacións nin ataduras de ningún tipo (https://laplantacion.info) onde se ofrece formación en liña e especialmente presencial, a través de talleres e titorías personalizadas, convidando autores de referencia, sobre todo en cinema e fotografía, como Pedro Costa, Antoine D’Agata, Víctor Erice, Txema Salvans, Mercedes Álvarez, José Luis Guerín ou Joan Fontcuberta, entre outros, e onde se relacionan proxectos coa cultura audiovisual e a creatividade máis aló do sistema tradicional de ensino.

Ever since finishing her degrees, her work has generally been linked to the audiovisual industry, and since 2014 she has directed the project La Plantación. Encuentros y Conocimiento, a private initiative without any links or ties whatsoever (https://laplantacion.info) that provides online and especially in-person training through workshops and personalised tutorials, inviting leading authors, particularly in the fields of cinema and photography, such as Pedro Costa, Antoine D’Agata, Víctor Erice, Txema Salvans, Mercedes Álvarez, José Luis Guerín or Joan Fontcuberta, among others, and relating projects to audiovisual culture and creativity beyond the traditional education system.

cinema hoxe está máis vivo que nunca.

A revolución dixital supuxo unha verdadeira explosión de posibilidades. Os actuais softwares de edición en tempo real permiten modelar a imaxe en directo, tratala, multiplicala e envorcala sobre calquera superficie, plana ou con volume. O computador e o proxector son unha extensión do artista que pode facer un cinema máis performativo e integrarse na obra á vez que integra ao espectador. En realidade isto non é novo, a performance en directo e o desbordamento da pantalla xa ocorrían desde as súas orixes, coas vangardas ou nos anos 70 baixo a denominación de «cinema expandido».

Queremos poñer o foco nun grupo de creadores e creadoras de recoñecido talento cuxo discurso discorre por estes límites da pantalla libre.

As súas obras producen hibridacións fílmicas e videográficas onde cobra protagonismo a proxección, a performance ou a instalación. As súas propostas exploran novas formas e narrativas, permiten a improvisación, a multipantalla e converten ao artista en performer, montador, cineasta que presenta a súa película experimental en vivo.

Nesta edición titulada Cinema percorridos II: Visións nocturnas, Play-Doc convida novamente a cinco artistas a que escollan un lugar de Tui para crear instalacións site-specific. oday cinema is more alive than ever. The digital revolution has brought with it a veritable explosion of possibilities. Today’s realtime editing softwares allow the image to take shape live, processed, multiplied and projected onto any surface, flat or dimensional. The computer and the projector become an extension of the artist who can create a more performative cinema, and integrate herself into the work, whilst integrating the spectator. In reality this is not so new, live performance and an overflowing screen have been happening in cinema since its origins, with the avant-garde and in the 1970s under the name “expanded cinema.”

We want to focus on a group of creators, of recognised talent, whose discourses run along the limits of the liberated screen. Their works produce filmic and videographic hybrids in which projection, performance and installation take centre stage. Their proposals explore new forms and narratives, allow for improvisation, are multi-screen and turn the artists into performers, editors, filmmakers who present their films as living.

In this edition entitled Cinema percorridos II: Visións nocturnas, Play-Doc once again invites five artists to choose a location in Tui in which to create site-specific installations. Each participant works by complementing their own material with archival material provided by the festival, of Super8 home-videos from the 60s, 70s and 80s, filmed by Tui locals. The idea is to appropriate

Juanjo Fernández Rivero, máis coñecido como Gnomalab, é un dos creadores españois de visuais e videomapping máis recoñecidos do panorama mundial. Nacido na escena underground barcelonesa, leva un cuarto de século explorando ao vivo o cinema e reclamando a lexitimidade artística do medio. Artista multidisciplinar, é tamén músico membro do aclamado grupo The Suicide of Western Culture. Realizará unha obra de live cinema coa colaboración sonora do etnomusicólogo Carlos Suárez.

Iria del Bosque e Borja Bernárdez codirixen o seu estudo creativo MIL 111 e volven desde Madrid á súa terra natal para compartir a investigación do seu laboratorio artístico/experimental MIL111. lab. Xuntos propoñen universos alternativos e inmersivos nados de fisuras na realidade provocadas pola luz, o espazo, a imaxe e o son. Funden teoría da arte, psicoloxía, socioloxía, con medios dixitais, audiovisual e programación para reflexionar de forma interdisciplinar sobre o ser humano e a súa existencia como individuo e colectividade. Neste caso o diseño sonoro da súa obra correrá a cargo de Carlos Besada aka Verbose.

Montse Pinheiro, creadora galega que traballa de modo tenaz como escenógrafa e iluminadora teatral e musical. Experimenta co debuxo, a ilustración e a escultura. Na súa peculiar investigación traballa a cerámica, a animación estroboscópica e o stop-motion, técnicas que fundiu nunha serie de animacións experimentais musicalizadas que foron proxectadas en festivais internacionais de cinema e animación.

Juanma LoDo compaxina a súa actividade como músico experimental con outros campos como a fotografía, o deseño industrial, gráfico e web, o documental ou a arte multimedia. Artista multidisciplinar hiperactivo e colaborador incansable doutros artistas, creou pezas de arte audiovisual para teatro, salas de festa, festivais (Vjing, Mapping) ou realizado instalacións multimedia para museos e eventos artísticos.

Presentamos a un grupo de artistas que gardan certa tradición similar e recoñécense e atópanse dentro da escena dos hoxe chamados «visualistas». Aínda que as súas creacións na práctica teñen moito que ver co cinema experimental e

Juanjo Fernández Rivero, better known as Gnomalab, is one of the most renowned Spanish creators of visuals and ‘videomapping’ on the global scene. Born in the Barcelona underground scene, he has spent a quarter of a century exploring live cinema and reclaiming the artistic legitimacy of the medium. A multidisciplinary artist, he is also a musician and member of the acclaimed band The Suicide of Western Culture.

He will make a live cinema work in collaboration with the ethnomusicologist Carlos Suárez.

Iria del Bosque and Borja Bernárdez co-direct their creative studio MIL 111, and will return from Madrid to their homeland to share the research of their artistic/experimental laboratory MIL111.lab.

Together they propose alternative and immersive universes born from fissures in reality provoked by light, space, image and sound. They combine art theory, psychology, sociology, digital media, audiovisuals and programming to reflect in an interdisciplinary way on humans and their individual and collective existences. In this event the sound design will be made by Carlos Besada aka Verbose.

Montse Pinheiro is a Galician artist who works tenaciously as a set designer and theatrical and musical lighting designer. She experiments with drawing, illustration and sculpture. In her peculiar research she works with ceramics, stroboscopic animation and stop-motion, techniques that she has fused into a series of experimental animations set to music that have been screened at international film and animation festivals.

Juanma LoDo combines his activity as an experimental musician with other fields such as photography, graphic industrial and web design, documentary and multimedia art. A multidisciplinary hyperactive artist and tireless collaborator with other artists, he has created audiovisual art pieces for the theatre, nightclubs, festivals (Vjing, Mapping) and created multimedia installations for museums and arts events.

We have presented a group of artists who have a similar tradition and are recognised within the scene of today’s so-called “visualistas.”

Although their creations, in practice, have a lot to do with experimental and avant-garde cinema, paradoxically they are often not associated with it.

It is in this sense that it seemed essential, to us, to complete this list with a pioneering collective of expanded cinema in Spain: AA++ is a creative laboratory formed by Ana Domínguez and Ángel Rueda, two film artists who develop their work through the live presentation of the optical-mechanical technologies of cinema (performances with celluloid in Super8 and 16mm). Walter, que naquela época tiña 20 anos, axudou na produción sen ter nunca antes traballado nunha película e quedou obsesionado coa idea de facer posible o imposible.

Walter foi vivir a Alemaña onde rapidamente coñeceu a escritores, poetas, e cineastas que formaban parte da nova onda de cinema alemán como Herbert Achternbusch, Fassbinder e por suposto Werner Herzog, con quen colaborou ao longo de case toda a súa carreira. Walter Saxer, foi quen fixo posible algunhas das producións máis difíciles da historia do cinema como sen dúbida foi Fitzcarraldo e tamén Aguirre, a cólera de Deus.

Nesta exclusiva clase maxistral explicará como estas películas foron feitas nas condicións máis arduas, cun equipo extremadamente pequeno en Aguirre e subindo un barco de vapor por unha montaña en Fitzcarraldo. Saxer estará acompañado polo crítico de cinema, produtor, divulgador científico e astrónomo coruñés, Martin Pawley.

alter Saxer is a Swiss Film Producer who began his film career in the late 60’s when, in Lanzarote, he met the young German director Werner Herzog who had chosen the spanish island to shoot his second feature Even Dwarfs Started Small. Walter, 20 at the time, helped the production without having ever worked in a film before and became captured by the challenge of making the “impossible” happen. Walter then moved to Germany where he quickly became acquainted with writers, poets, filmmakers who were part of the German New Cinema wave like Herbert Achternbusch, Fassbinder and of course Werner Herzog, with whom he collaborated for most of his career.

Walter Saxer, has been the mind and hand behind most difficult film productions in history like Fitzcarraldo for sure and even Aguirre, the Wrath of God. In this exclusive masterclass he will explain how those films were made in such difficult circumstances as an extremely small crew in Aguirre and moving a steam boat over a mountain for Fitzcarraldo. Saxer will be accompanied by the Galician film critic, producer and astronomer, Martin Pawley.

aniel Domínguez Pérez (Tui, 1955 Corrubedo, 2020) foi un mestre xeneroso, un guionista brillante e un cineasta apaixonado. Foi un dos autores de series de televisión e películas como Mareas Vivas, As leis de Celavella, Padre Casares, Miña sogra máis eu, A vida por diante e Branca Madison, entre outras. No ano 2002 recibiu o premio Mestre Mateo ao mellor guión por Terra de Miranda. Foi un dos fundadores da Escola de Imaxe e Son de A Coruña e a súa erudición cinéfila quedou patente nas súas numerosas colaboracións como crítico de cine, pero sobre todo no seu excelente blogue La escuela de los domingos. Pioneiro e figura clave do cinema e do audiovisual galego, Daniel Domínguez será sempre unha importante referencia e unha inspiración para todos nós.

Nesta edición queremos lembrarlle con agarimo coa proxección da súa película Río de sombras, rodada en Tui en 1986, e farémolo acompañados da súa familia, amigos e compañeiros.

He was one of the creators of films and TV series such as Mareas Vivas, As leis de Celavella, Padre Casares, Miña sogra máis eu, A vida por diante and Blanca Madison, among others. In 2002, he received the Mestre Mateo award for Best Screenplay for Terra de Miranda.

He was one of the founders of the Escola de Imaxe e Son de A Coruña and his erudition as a cinephile was evident in his numerous collaborations as a film critic, above all in his excellent blog 'La escuela de los domingos.' A pioneer and key figure in Galician cinema and audiovisual, Daniel Domínguez will always be an important reference and inspiration for all of us.

In this edition we want to remember him with affection, with the screening of his film Río de sombras, shot in Tui in 1986, and we will do it accompanied by his family, friends and colleagues.

Suso, un mecánico, procura a complicidade do seu axudante, Lolo, para cobrar unha factura pendente a Arístides —o contrabandista— que mantén baixo o seu poder a Celia, a costureira, a cambio de facer a vista gorda a súa familia na represión —nos tempos das cunetas—.

Cando chega a noite, as sombras enredan os fíos dos que pendura o crime da fronteira.

A journalist and a photographer are covering a crime at the border. There is nothing to add to the photos. The journalist tries to articulate the story. Suso, a mechanic, seeks to collude with his assistant Lolo, in order to collect an outstanding bill from Arístides, a smuggler, who keeps the seamstress Celia under his power in exchange for turning a blind eye to her family during the years of the Repression, in "los tiempos de las cunetas". Celia prepares the spider's web. When night falls, shadows entangle the threads from which this crime of the border hang.

Nacido en Rio de Janeiro, de ascendencia italiana, na década dos 90 formou a banda de rock experimental Mulheres Que Dizem á vez que comezou a traballar con Moreno Veloso e Alexandre Kassin no proxecto + 2.

Multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer, producer and visual artist, Domenico Lancellotti is one of the great names in contemporary Brazilian popular music. Born in Rio de Janeiro, of Italian descent, he formed the experimental rock band Mulheres Que Dizem in the 1990s and began working with Moreno Veloso and Alexandre Kassin in the project + 2.

Foi un dos fundadores de Orquestra Imperial e colaborou cos proxectos Os Ritmistas, Vamos Estar Fazendo e Meia Banda. Como músico, compositor e produtor, traballou con Adriana Calcanhotto, Caetano Veloso, Arto Lindsay, Gilberto Gil, Moreno Veloso, Gal Costa e Chrissie Hynde.

He has also composed soundtracks for theatre, dance and art installations. Following on from Cine Privê (2011) and Serra dos Órgãos (2017), he recently released Raio, an album recorded between Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon, which explores the roots of Brazilian popular music and the rhythms of electronica, with a "feeling of reconstruction, and rebirth."
