The City of Temple is thrilled to announce the conclusion of the 4th Annual Merry & Bright Holiday Lights Tour & Contest!

Community voting officially closed Monday, December 15, at 8 a.m., and this year’s winner was John Petersen, who received 102 votes.

The winning home, located at 6739 Misty Creek Lane, was recognized at the December 18 City Council meeting by Mayor Tim Davis.

The City of Temple’s Department of Libraries and Museums is pleased to announce that Dr. Jill Hoffman has been selected as the new manager of the Temple Railroad & Heritage Museum.

Hoffman brings more than 25 years of experience in nationally accredited art and history museums, leading teams, securing major grants, and designing programs that connect history, art, and education at organizations such as the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, NM, and the Art Center Waco, among others.

CITY OF TEMPLE SOLID WASTE DIVISION DELIVERS SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS AND FLEET INVESTMENTS

COMPLETED DOWNTOWN CITY CENTER PROJECT

The City of Temple’s Solid Waste Division has achieved major service improvements since transitioning from a four-day to a five-day collection schedule in July. By keeping garbage and recycling pickup on the same day, residents across the city are experiencing more reliable and efficient service.

After years of planning and collaboration, the City of

During a City Council Workshop presentation on December 18, Solid Waste Division Director Justin Brantley said the division now operates ten garbage routes and seven recycling routes Monday through Friday, and since moving to a call-in, once-a-month brush and bulk collection per household in August, all scheduled weekly pickups have been completed on time. In addition, landfill renewable natural gas production totaled 383,888 diesel gallon equivalents in Fiscal Year 2025, supplying fuel to power Solid Waste’s CNG trucks.

The City Swap Shop is an interdepartmental resource exchange designed to help City staff share unneeded items, reduce waste, and make better use of the resources we already have.

The City Swap Shop allows departments to rehome unneeded apparel, office items, furniture, and other usable resources so they can be utilized by another department instead of being auctioned or discarded. Likewise, staff can browse available items and “shop” for things their department may need, at no cost.

December Safety Topic December in Central Texas can bring sudden temperature changes, occasional cold snaps, and busy holiday schedules.

Here are a few reminders to help keep everyone safe at work and at home this season.

Prepare for Texas-Style Winter Weather Watch for black ice: Elevated roadways like I-35 overpasses freeze first. Drive slowly and increase following distance on cold mornings.

Dress in layers: Central Texas can swing from cold to warm within hours – layer clothing so you can adjust safely throughout the day.

Report slick surfaces: Even a light freeze can create slippery sidewalks and parking lots. Notify facilities if you see icy spots.

Holiday Season Stress & Fatigue Avoid rushing or multitasking; stay focused on tasks.

Take regular breaks, especially during extended shifts or year-end deadlines.

Check in with coworkers—holiday stress can impact focus and morale.

Electrical & Fire Safety for Decorations Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn and plug them directly into the wall (no power strips).

Avoid overloading outlets with holiday lights or décor.

Turn off all space heaters, lights or decorations before leaving the building, or area.

Celebrate Safely Use proper ladders when decorating—no climbing on office furniture.

Keep walkways clear of cords and seasonal décor.

Let’s finish the year safely, look out for one another, and give thanks for the great work we do serving our community every day!

Meet my fur baby! Her name is Sundae, Dae for short. She is 5 years old and loves the outdoors. I think in her perfect world she would spend all day outside and come in for dinnertime and nap in our bed!

She is always happy, except for when she is being sassy.

Sundae is a rescue, most likely was born in a shelter. We adopted her from some work friends when she was 1 years old! She is mostly American Miniature Shephard and Labrador retriever but has a total of 19 breeds in her according to her DNA results, including Rhodesian Ridgeback!

Oh! She is also the softest dog you will ever pet, I haven't felt another dog fur as soft as hers!

A FAMILY HOLIDAY TRADITION BY: SARAH FOWLER

The First Experience Since its beginning in 1996, the annual Nature in Lights display at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA) has been part of my heart and my family’s story.

Growing up in Temple, those magical drives through the lights were the highlight of my holiday season. My family would pile into the car, bundled up, brimming with excitement. My dad drove slowly, giving us time to soak in every sparkling display. My mom’s voice would fill the car while she pointed out her favorite lights. We laughed and shouted as each new scene came into view. We eagerly searched for the caterpillar with the bouncing elves.

Those drives filled with warmth and wonder became the foundation of a cherished tradition.

Continuing The Traditions As a teenager, the tradition evolved. I was no longer the child in the car's back seat; I became the one driving. The one with the opportunity to share the experience with my younger cousins and friends.

Some things will always stay the same, even as we grow up. We still hang our heads out the windows, just as I did when I was younger.

Santa’s Village became the stop for hot cocoa to warm our hearts. The tunnel of twinkling lights was a favorite we sought each year. We’d drive ever so slowly through it, savoring every glowing detail.

It was a different kind of magic but just as special

A Generational Wealth of Experience Eventually, my siblings, cousins, and I started our own families, and the tradition took on an even deeper meaning. Watching my children experience Nature in Lights for the first time was indescribable. Their wide eyes and delighted laughter brought me back to those nights from my childhood. We added our own touches to the tradition: matching pajamas, silly singalongs, and plenty of blankets to keep warm. The 12 Days of Christmas display became a highlight, with everyone belting out the song and giggling as we tried to keep up with the corresponding lights. Seeing my kids’ joy reminded me how these simple moments connect us across generations.

My oldest is now in college, and my youngest is in high school. Life feels like moving faster than ever, but some things remain constant.

My oldest still talks about the lights showcasing Santa catching the whale, and my daughter loves bringing her friends along to share in the magic. This year, we’ve already taken a few groups of friends, but I’m most excited about the drive yet to come with just us. As soon as winter break begins, we’ll be back in matching pajamas, rolled down windows, singing carols, and sipping cocoa.

Make Your Own Traditions at BLORA Nature in Lights is more than a holiday tradition. It’s a reminder of the connections that bind us through the joy of sharing simple moments and the beauty of carrying cherished memories forward. I can't recommend this experience enough. Bring your family and friends, or go solo and let the lights remind you of the magic around us. It’s more than a drive-through display; it’s a journey through the heart of what makes the season truly special.

SLEIGH THE SEASON: TRADITIONS WORTH KEEPING BY: COURTNEY JONES

The season of twinkling lights, cozy moments, and time together is here, and with it comes the magic of holiday traditions. No matter how big or small, traditions are what make the holidays truly special.

For many families, the season starts with decorating.

Pulling out boxes of ornaments, unwrapping each one with such care, playing festive music and the occasional “Feliz Navidad”, and finding the perfect spot for every sparkle on the tree sets the tone for weeks of joy. Whether it’s a perfectly styled tree or a delightfully mismatched collection built over the years, decorating together is half the fun.

Holiday traditions often revolve around food as well.

From baking cookies and swapping sweet treats with coworkers and friends to gathering around the table for favorite seasonal meals, these moments become memories long after the plates are cleared. Bonus points if there’s a secret family recipe or a tradition of taste-testing everything along the way.

Watching holiday movies is another classic. Cozy blankets, warm drinks, and a lineup of feel-good favorites make for easy, laughter-filled nights. Some families stick to the classics, while others love adding a new movie to the mix each year. And while the Hallmark movies are a set standard of the same old thing, they still spark a little joy in every household that watches them.

Of course, the holidays wouldn’t feel complete without finding time to slow down and enjoy one another.

Game nights, winter walks, storytelling, or simply sitting together and taking it all in remind us what the season is really about.

No two traditions look the same and that’s the beauty of it. Whether you’re continuing longtime favorites or starting something new, holiday traditions are all about togetherness, joy, and making moments worth remembering.

Choose your people. Pick your tradition. Add a little sparkle. Repeat every year.

MAKING THE HOLIDAYS SHINE: RECOGNIZING OUR SPECIAL EVENTS TEAM BY: LINDSAY FRANCIS

This holiday season wouldn’t have shined nearly as bright without our incredible Special Events Team!

Amanda, our Events Manager, led the charge with grace, focus, and steady hands keeping every moving part aligned and ensuring success from start to finish.

Ashley took the reins on Christmas at the Plaza, delivering an event that brought in nearly 6,000 attendees and earned nothing but praise from the community. The market was fantastic, S’mores Land was absolutely precious, and the Tree Lighting + Pyromusic Show? Let’s just say it was the best in Central Texas...hands down.

Chelsea led the Christmas Parade like a pro, navigating rain, cold temps, and all the unpredictability that comes with outdoor events.

The result? A smooth, joyful parade with an incredible turnout and tons of positive engagement.

Huge thanks also to Maddie for her vendor support at Christmas at the Plaza and her parade coordination assistance! Your hard work is paying off in big ways!

And a special appreciation to Kim, whose willingness to jump in wherever needed, volunteer time, and provide guidance kept us moving forward with confidence and clarity.

A KEEPER OF CHRISTMAS IN DOWNTOWN TEMPLE: SARAH FOWLER BY: COURTNEY JONES

Every town has a season where it seems to breathe a little differently.

In Downtown Temple, that season arrives softly on strings of lights hung just a little straighter, in music drifting between buildings, in the familiar comfort of traditions returning home.

And somewhere within it all is the girl with the Christmas spirit: Sarah Fowler.

She understands that Christmas is made of many hands and many hearts, of neighbors, coworkers, families, vendors, and friends, and she is one of the people who helps gather those moments and give them a festive place to land.

Her work lives downtown, where winter evenings are filled with movement and meaning. She helps shape experiences like Jingle Jam, where The Yard fills with laughter and lights, and singing to delight. As well as Kringle Krawl, where families wander together, bundled and smiling. She’s part of the team that brings Trackside Cinema to life, where a familiar movie plays beneath the stars, and the sound of trains reminds us where this town began.

She loves traditions, the kind that repeat themselves year after year and grow richer with time. Visiting Blora, where the lights glow quietly and the world feels slower, softer, and more cheerful than ever.

Skating at Rink on the Rails, even when the air is cold and the night feels endless. These moments matter to her not because they are perfect, but because they are shared.

What she understands, perhaps better than most, is that the magic of the holidays is never loud. It’s found in small details: a song remembered, a path lit, a night made special simply by being together.

Christmas, to her, is not something to claim; it’s something to tend.

So when Downtown Temple feels warmer in December, when traditions return, and new ones begin, it’s because people like her are paying attention. Listening. Believing.

Not in miracles, exactly, but in the quiet power of community, and the beauty of bringing people together, year after year.

FROM THE KITCHEN TO THE CROWN: CHILI COOK-OFF CHAMPION WESLEY HUTTON BY: BELINDA MATTKE

The General Services Department turned up the heat on December 8th with the department’s first Chili Cook-off. The Chili Cook-off was more than just a culinary competition, it’s a chance for the General Services Department to come together, share laughs, and celebrate creativity outside the office.

This year’s event featured 7 creative entries ranging from classic Texas-style, a chicken-based chili, to an adventurous vegetarian blend. After a spirited lunch with bold flavors and plenty of taste-testing, one chili reigned supreme.

Congratulations to Wesley Hutton, City Electrician, who claimed the Chili Cook-off 1st place ring with his brisketinfused signature recipe that got the most votes by the tasters.

I had the privilege of attending their Brush & Bulk safety training and learned so much. The skill it takes to operate heavy equipment and maneuver through unknown challenges in the field is truly impressive.

The Executive Support Coordinator is the main administrative contact for General Services. Key duties include intaking and prioritizing facility work requests, coordinating equipment and supply purchases, compiling procurement card documentation, and monitoring the department's operational budget. The role also manages the department website, maintains digital files, and processes contract payments.

UTILITY TECHNICIAN III Utilizes physical labor to assist in water and wastewater line repair, replacement and installation, excavation, traffic control, etc. Operates heavy equipment and specialty equipment associated with the maintenance, repair, and installation of water and sewer projects. Follows all safety policies.

Provides a variety of skilled and non-skilled work that varies with career ladder. Manages materials and crew members in the absence of a crew leader

PROJECT INSPECTOR Project Inspector, under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Public Works, ensures quality and compliance for Temple infrastructure (water/sewer, streets, drainage). This role focuses on on-site inspections, plan review, and quality assurance to ensure adherence to standards, manage testing, and facilitate communication.

HEAVY DUTY TRUCK TECHNICIAN II Under general supervision, the Heavy-duty Truck Technician inspects, diagnoses, and repairs moderately complex issues associated with dieselpowered vehicles and machines, like trucks, forklifts and construction equipment.
