WELCOME TO AN ALL-NEW DISCOVERY

O

riginally opened on New Year’s Eve in 1925 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Vinoy Renaissance Resort & Golf Club is the only historic luxury resort on Florida’s west coast that boasts four restaurants and lounges, 63,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting and event space, a private 72-slip marina, an 18-hole golf course, a 10-court tennis complex and a 5,000 square foot fitness center. Our tower guest rooms have been re-designed to reflect the glamour of the 1920s, when this historic hotel first opened. Artwork found in the rooms are by famed photographer Toni Frissell and her iconic imagery from a 1947 Harper’s Bazaar magazine photo shoot at Florida’s Weeki Wachee spring. It is important to us that any changes we make retain The Vinoy’s original elegance while utilizing the best of contemporary design. The Vinoy’s lounge-like lobby blends modern elegance with Mediterranean Revival architecture and features custom-made artwork from Dale Chihuly. In this issue, we chat with the Director of The Chihuly Collection, Andy Schlauch, who talks about the fabulous glass pieces you will find throughout The Vinoy – one of only four hotels worldwide to have Chihuly’s art on display. As downtown St. Petersburg’s most iconic hotel, we treasure our community and embrace the growth of visual and performing arts in recent years. All of our concierges are amazing and can arrange your day of discovery with tried and true spots for outdoor dining, entertainment, and shopping. Discover the dining here at The Vinoy with a stop by Paul’s Landing for local seafood and international dishes in an atmosphere inspired by the unique history of St. Petersburg - particularly the city’s smokehouse and fishing pier. Couple your meal with fantastic views of Vinoy Marina. This marina and pool view restaurant features glass walls that highlight stunning views of the bay, downtown St. Petersburg and the swimming pool. Be sure to sample the namesake beer developed by one of St. Pete’s local craft breweries. 2021 and beyond will be the time to catch up on postponed wedding and family celebrations. You’ll find information about the wide variety of indoor and outdoor venues available at The Vinoy. Rest assured that our associates have unlimited ideas for décor. Meanwhile, although the world has changed, newlyweds deserve to celebrate their day with a romantic escape, something we like to call a “minimoon.” You’ll have to peek inside to see what that is all about. We hope you return year-after-year to experience what the future holds. Add your images to our history using #VinoyRen. Sincerely,

Tabish Siddique General Manager

CLUB MEMBER PROFILE STEVE AND NANCY WESTPHAL

f you have dined in downtown St. Pete, chances are pretty good that Vinoy Club members Steve and Nancy Westphal were your hosts. Pick a restaurant—400 Beach Seafood and Tap House, Annex, Parkshore Grill, The Hangar Restaurant and Flight Lounge or Café Gala at The Dali Museum—and this power couple, owners of St. Pete Hospitality, put a lot of thought and effort into the menus, staffing, décor, marketing and community outreach. “It literally is a labor of love for all our family members,” says Steve. Nancy’s daughter Katherine Ruetz helps with specialty events and day to day operations at Annex Coffee Shop and son John Ruetz is the general manager and banquet manager at 400 Beach Seafood. Nancy, a longtime Vinoy Club member and resident of downtown St. Pete, met Steve on Beach Drive and they married six months later in 2010. Steve had opened Park Shore Grill in 2006 and was building The Hangar Restaurant at Albert Whitted Airport and opening 400 Seafood and Tap House, followed by Café Gala. “I found my path when Nancy and her family came into my life. I would never have imagined how fortuitous the path became, leading us to now owning five restaurants. Each one has been a gift and a blessing. What we love about the amount of business we maintain is it gives us a great deal of strength in our ability to channel our blessings back into the community.” 6

VinoyRenaissanceResort.com

Steve and Nancy Westphal

Local author Michael Scott Novilla wrote in DowntownStPete.com, “Perhaps it is Westphal’s military roots that gave him the experiences as a child, which allowed him to fall in love with diversity and made him a world-class host. While living in Morocco with his family when he was about six years old (his father was in the Air Force), he remembers his parents hosting Embassy parties at their home. Although Steve was the only child at the lavish affairs, he somehow felt that he fit right in with the men sporting their military medals with pride and the women looking stunning in their evening gowns. How did this military boy transition into the restaurant industry? As a young teen, Westphal landed his first job as a bus boy and as fate would have it, twentysome years later, he ended up owning the restaurant where he got his start at The Pub in Indian Shores. After a decade of running it, he began to realize the opportunity for hospitality in beautiful Downtown St. Pete.”

Fast forward 14 years and the Westphals stay focused on the hospitality component. They love being with their customers. While Steve is hands on with each restaurant, often out in front greeting guests, Nancy engages with all of their followers on social media, too. “We work together and we play together,” says Steve. “When we want to get away, we go have lunch or dinner at Paul’s Landing at The Vinoy. Our leisure time spent at The Vinoy Club is either at the spa or out on the tennis courts, socializing with our neighbors. We see fellow Vinoy members around St. Pete’s wonderful downtown that we call home. It’s great to have such a getaway nearby to recharge and renew, while keeping an eye on our businesses up and down Beach Drive.” Avid boaters, the Westphals enjoy being able to tie up their boats at The Vinoy Marina (Steve admits there have been many toys over the years) and visit the restaurant or have meals brought out to the boat. “I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge all of the friendly associates at The Vinoy Club, the marina, and the hotel. We sincerely thank the concierges, the valets, the people at the front desk, and everyone who refers guests to us with confidence. I love that the community has many needs and desires that are brought to our attention and we are happy to fulfill our role to be a part of the community that takes care of us.”

APP PROVIDES MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR

As you meander the ornate halls of The Vinoy, do you wonder about the history made here and the people who walked these same steps in the past? Well, as they say, there’s an app for that! Downloadable from Google Play by looking up Vinoy Renaissance, the multimedia tour lets you experience history in the making. It all began with a bet over 90 years ago. The rest, as they say, is history. From the grand opening on New Year’s Eve in 1925 through today, The Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club has a rich and storied past. Enhance your stay with our Navigator’s recommendations, restaurant specials and resort map. Take a peek into our archives with our multi-media history tour experience for exclusive looks at our intriguing artifacts and exhibits. You’ll learn about The Vinoy’s amazing heritage and be enchanted by the tales of the rich and famous who preceded your footsteps down its historic halls. Grab your smart phone and use the app during your next walk through the hotel and appreciate the alluring blend of 1920s art-deco architecture and modern convenience.

A FEW KEY POINTS TO OBSERVE: The Vinoy’s original 1925 color—a pinkish coral hue—was created by the Gutta Percha Paint Company exclusively for the hotel and was named “Vinoy.” Its octagonal Observation Tower, built to resemble a Renaissance-style bell tower though it never held a bell, provided a lofty perch for guests to enjoy the view, just as they might at an Italian seaside villa. The hotel’s Moorish influence is evident in its decorative archways, especially the ornately carved stone treatment of the main entrance door and the great arched window in the south wall of the dining room wing. The veranda, running the full length of the lobby, provided a cool and breezy respite from the hot Florida sun, much like a palazzo. Back in the day, barrel ceilings, archways and ornate plaster moldings highlighted The Vinoy’s Grand Ballroom in a display of absolute symmetry. The Vinoy’s History Gallery encompasses two walls and spans the period 1901-2010, linking the resort with the history of St. Petersburg. Intriguing artifacts and exhibits—original room keys and floor tiles, pieces of china and silver, postcards and photos—are displayed in a chronological diorama.

NAMES KEEP MEMORIES ALIVE

When it comes to choosing names for restaurants, meeting rooms, and spaces at The Vinoy, we do our best to remember the incredible history that surrounds this special place. The inspiration behind the name of the newest restaurant at The Vinoy, Paul’s Landing, for instance, honors the man who originally planted an orange grove there more than 150 years ago. William Paul, an early settler in the region, arrived on the land where the Vinoy is now located. The snack bar next to the swimming pool at the Vinoy Golf Club is named after D.L. Clark, founder of the candy bar company after the same name. Clark purchased the land in 1932 and renamed it Clark’s Sunset Golf Course, which it remained until 1948. Not all that historic, but interesting to note is how Marchand’s was chosen as the restaurant name when the resort opened in 1992. As the story goes, a charismatic and memorable man named Pierre Marchand worked at the restaurant long ago as a maître d'. The name captured the imagination of everyone, and so it remained, long after Pierre left. Fred Guest, with family roots that included such names as Woolworth and Churchill, took an interest in the resurgence happening in St. Petersburg in the late 1980s and committed funds to not only reinvent downtown, but to create his vision for a spectacular hotel at the heart of the city – today that hotel is The Vinoy Renaissance Resort & Golf Club.

going to be exhibited and we held them out to the students so they could actually feel and experience them,” said Schlauch. “It helped to illustrate what I say about Chihuly’s work during a museum tour.” Schlauch said it was so wellreceived and with that impetus, he reached out to people with Alzheimers disease and their caregivers at the Memory Café. Members of the group ask questions about art history and it spurs on conversation and memories. The Center for Autism and Related Disorders was open to Schlauch’s recommendation of using art to help manage expectations and quell anxieties. “Using a similar touch tour of moving objects on a cart as I go through the gallery, everyone has the chance to come up close to an object. If it breaks, it is not an issue.”

Which answered the next question that comes to mind— how close is up close and is there a potential to damage priceless art? “As a matter of fact, Dale doesn’t like to have a lot of barriers around his work. The effort here is to make us more accessible as an institution to more diverse communities.” “Morean Arts Center hosts an Art of Valor program for disabled veterans at James A. Hayley Veterans Hospital in Tampa. A glassblower that found learning to blow glass helped him personally, connected us and now the hospital routinely brings vets to the museum on Sundays. There is also the social aspect – glass blowing is a team project. So, as former military, they are comfortable being in a cohesive group accomplishing a goal.” “In all of these groups, I partner with an expert in that field and they bring their insight to the table. That’s how I can best relate Dale’s art to the individuals in each audience.” Schlauch routinely sees Vinoy Club members come through the collection, especially when they have family traveling from out of town. He can tell they have a sense of pride of having the connection at The Vinoy and the collection here in St. Pete. It sets the hotel and the destination apart from other places to visit.

EXPLORE ST. PETE

ust a few decades ago, St. Petersburg was known as a quiet retirement haven whose claim to fame was sandy beaches, warm weather and the signature green benches that lined its sleepy downtown sidewalks. Today, the Sunshine City—360 days each year, on average—boasts a bustling downtown waterfront that is pedestrian-friendly, crisscrossed by well-tended parks, and enlivened by world class museums, galleries, theaters, restaurants, shops and boutiques. Striking new architecture rubs neighborly shoulders with historic structures, and St. Petersburg is the first city in the state to earn the designation of Green City from the Florida Green Building Coalition.

A CITY OF THE ARTS

The 2020 SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Arts Festival added a dozen more expressions of art on buildings and traffic signal boxes created by international and local artists. Discover the murals via walking tours hosted by The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance, trolley tours, or on bicycle. Art enthusiasts can also partake in a self-guided tour via the app PixelStix at https://pixelstix.com/pixelstix-app/. Based on a shared desire among city and community leaders in 2012, The Arts Alliance made a serious investment in St. Pete’s local arts organizations, artists and creative businesses with the introduction of ArtWalk. Held the second Saturday of every month, ArtWalk is a free and fun way to collect art, meet the creative minds in this vibrant city, and explore the following art-centric neighborhoods: • Waterfront Arts District • Central Arts District • The EDGE District • Grand Central District • Warehouse Arts District St. Petersburg is home to no less than six performing arts companies, a dozen museums, theatrical and concert venues, studios and galleries. Be sure to add some time into your visit to experience the fabulous arts community here.

A SOUGHT-AFTER DESTINATION

St. Petersburg’s lively downtown waterfront attracts high-profile sporting and special events as well. April 23-25, 2021, the city’s bayside streets will buzz with race cars during the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, the first North American race of the Verizon IndyCar Series. In April, its sunshine-filled avenues welcome athletes from around the nation to compete in the St. Anthony’s Sports & Fitness Expo and Triathlon. The Tampa Bay Rays, a World Series Major League Baseball team, swings for the fences at domed Tropicana Field during home games from April to September. More sedate pleasures can be enjoyed every Saturday at the year-round, downtown farmers’ market that features fresh produce, flowers and handmade crafts and gifts.

ENDLESS OPTIONS, JUST STEPS AWAY

Any time of year, blue skies and golden warmth invite you outdoors to stroll through gardens and waterfront parks, swim and shell along pristine beaches, sail away for an afternoon’s fishing or sightseeing adventure, or hike or pedal along the scenic Pinellas Trail, a 53-mile dedicated recreation trail. Evenings along St. Petersburg’s shoreline are magical, as well: Nightspots and restaurants come alive, gallery walks welcome evening strollers, and the city hosts a big block party on the first Friday of every month along Central Avenue with live jazz, food, drinks and dancing in the street. Please check for updates here https://www. VisitStPeteClearwater.com/event/first-friday-st-pete/7567. Best of all, everything is close to your home base at The Vinoy. Follow your feet, get behind the wheel, or hop aboard one of the open-air trolleys that stop at the resort and shuttle between downtown points of interest. Need directions? THE DALI MUSEUM

One Dali Boulevard 727-823-3767 TheDali.org; @TheDaliMuseum #TheDali The Dali features one of the most acclaimed collections of a single modern artist in the world. It houses more than 2,400 pieces of art by Dali, including 96 oil paintings and eight of the artist’s renowned Master Works—paintings that measure more than five feet. Designed by architect Yann Weymouth of HOK, the Dali Museum combines the rational with the fantastical: a simple rectangle with 18-inch-thick hurricane-proof walls out of which erupts a large geodesic glass bubble known as the enigma providing a kaleidoscopic view of St. Petersburg. The enigma, comprised of 1,062 triangular pieces of glass, stands 75 feet at its tallest point, a 21st Century homage to the dome that adorns Dali’s museum in Spain. Inside, the Dali houses a helical staircase resembling a strand of DNA. The helix was recognized by Dali as evidence of the divine in nature. The Dali Mathematical Garden creates a unique environment of learning and tranquility, allowing students to experience the relationship between math and nature. A labyrinth in the southeast corner invites exploration and well-being. The museum’s Café Gala, named in honor of Dali’s wife, is a casual eatery operated by local hospitality leader Steve Westphal, profiled as a Vinoy club member in this issue. (See 18

Together with a group of local businessmen and community leaders, the concept of a living memorial to those who suffered and perished was conceived. Among the participating individuals were Survivors of the Holocaust and individuals who lost relatives, as well as those who had no personal investment, other than wanting to ensure that such atrocities could never again happen to any group of people. THE GLAZER FAMILY DONATES A PLAYGROUND TO THE ST. PETE PIER

T

he City of St. Petersburg announced a 30-year agreement with the Glazer Vision Foundation in support of the playground at the St. Pete Pier. The Glazer Vision Foundation contributed $1.5 million toward the Glazer Family Playground, located within the new 26-acre St. Pete Pier District. The marine-themed playground is one-of-a-kind, designed by Earthscape in collaboration with the City and W Architecture. The theme of the playground reflects the context of the Pier and nearby coastal creatures. Designers asked, “What would newly hatched baby sea turtles see as they move from sand-to-sea?” The result is a playground with an immersive shoreline narrative. The junior play area represents the beach. An overturned sand bucket lies beside a curious starfish. A nearby mound with a hill slide and climbing log driftwood is a turtle’s nest from which baby turtles make their way to the water. Follow the turtles to where the shoreline transitions into deeper waters. A lifeguard tower overlooks an osprey’s nest log climber perched by the water’s edge. Further into the deep, an immense kraken sea monster swirls around a multilevel seaweed tower and a sunken shipwreck. Paths and gathering spaces link the spaces together, creating a hub of activity for visitors of all ages and abilities to enjoy. The St. Pete Pier™ marine themed playground is a reflection of the City inviting children and adults to play in a unique and creative way as part of this incredible new destination. “For a child, there’s no better place to have fun than at the playground,” said Darcie Glazer Kassewitz, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Co-Owner and President of the Glazer Vision Foundation. “Our foundation wants to reach every child in Tampa Bay, whether that’s by providing better opportunities to learn in school through free eye exams and glasses for all children, or with a safe space to play and create lifelong memories with family and friends. Glazer Family Playground is truly a family destination, and we are proud to announce this addition to the St. Pete Pier District to be enjoyed for years to come.” “We couldn’t be more excited for the Glazer name to become a fixture at the St. Pete Pier,” said Mayor Rick Kriseman. “I was not surprised to learn of their desire to name the pier’s sea-themed playground given their focus on family and their commitment to the entire Tampa Bay region. We are appreciative of this commitment and all that the Glazers do to make Tampa Bay a better place to live, work, and play.”

DISCOVERY DINING

COCKTAILS, CUISINE AND IMPECCABLE SERVICE

F

eaturing innovative twists and fresh ingredients, locally sourced whenever possible, The Vinoy’s menus are as tantalizing to read as they are to sample, and each offers smart dining options that feature healthier alternatives. Savor a menu of comfort classics and sip top-shelf selections of liqueurs, champagnes, apéritifs and cognacs. Cocktail menus change seasonally, highlighting the season and always cognizant of the Florida location, with light offerings, fruit infusions, and fresh herbs. Or sample the resort’s signature drink—Aymer’s Promenade Punch—a refreshing concoction of fruit juices, peach nectar, vodka and sparkling water. A St. Pete Distillery that makes private label rum, gin and vodka, created The Vinoy’s house vodka, Banyan Reserve. Paul’s Landing serves an array of specialty drinks incorporating local ingredients for the Lemon Slush and Congelado. Or you may want to try the Old St. Pete Mai Tai. A signature brew from 3 Daughters, a local St. Pete brewery, is poured here, too. Because of the orange groves that used to be where The Vinoy is situated now, 3 Daughters Brewery took a summer wheat ale and added orange to it. Other craft beers from Tampa Bay area breweries also are on the menus. Undoubtedly the best waterfront view for dining in downtown St. Pete, serves innovative Florida-inspired cuisine on its locally sourced menu. The story behind the restaurant’s name dates back over 150 years, when a U.S. Navy carpenter, William Paul, began construction on a seaside railroad depot. For the project, Paul crafted temporary barracks, and a smokehouse, as well as the first pier – which was frequented by local fisherman. After being discharged, Paul returned to this settlement with his family, planted a small orchard of Florida orange trees and continued to smoke fresh fish and shellfish pulled from the bay. Inspired by this history and the 40

flavors of seafood, citrus and smoke, Paul’s Landing pays homage with cuisine that incorporates the fresh Florida ingredients from all those years ago. The restaurant serves dishes such as fresh clams with orange and jalapeño broth from Tampa Bay-based Two Docks Shellfish, beer brined smoked wings, Gulf fish tacos and a smoked fish spread. Paul’s Landing serves as the ideal spot for social gatherings, family dinners and special celebrations. Keep in mind the reciprocal dining opportunities at The Vinoy Club Grill at the resort’s golf club on nearby Snell Isle. Guests can relax and linger over a SUNSET TERRACE

casual lunch or dinner while enjoying the sweeping fairway vistas. The dining experience is reminiscent of a private club, exclusive to members and resort guests only. The expanded restaurant provides extended views of the golf course and amplified pool area, as well as an enlarged, covered terrace, and exterior lounge. For a relaxed and casual indoor/ outdoor gathering space, guests love to discover the resort’s iconic indoor/ outdoor Promenade Bar & Lounge. Spilling outside on a veranda adjacent to the hotel’s entrance, the lounge area features LED screens.

DIETARY NEEDS

The Vinoy is aware that food allergies and dietary preferences are common, and we understand that it can be challenging to dine out due to special requirements. Our goal is to take the difficulty out of what should be an enjoyable occasion, by providing a variety of options. Our talented chefs and culinary team are happy to accommodate any dietary needs. We have incorporated requests for gluten-free and other requirements into our menus and are delighted to create a specialized dish for anyone who asks for something that is not listed on the menu. Please call ahead so we can be prepared. For example, sugar-free desserts must be prepared in advance.

Paul’s Landing American Wheat Ale from local St. Pete brewery 3 Daughters, was brewed in collaboration with members of the culinary team from The Vinoy. “We took our summer wheat ale and added orange to it because of the orange groves that used to be where The Vinoy is situated now,” explains Leigh Harting from 3 Daughters.

MEET CHRISTIAN CLAIR FOOD AND BEVERAGE DIRECTOR

“A

lways reimagine yourself,” says Christian Clair, Food and Beverage Director at The Vinoy® Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club. Working as a chef for 30 years, the challenges always changed, especially as you can imagine with the pandemic, so I found it best to be flexible and always try to reach perfection to keep on top.” He has gathered a team of cooks, bartenders, bakers, and kitchen staff who share his philosophy about hospitality. “It’s like sports. It takes a team to win and when you get your best team together and work in trust, the results are just amazing.”

44

VinoyRenaissanceResort.com

The supportive culinary team is happy to accommodate any dietary needs, incorporating requests for gluten-free and other requirements into every menu. They are delighted to create a specialized dish for anyone who asks for something that is not listed on the menu. Spending much of his early career in France, Clair arrived in the United States in 1997 and worked in Birmingham with Novotel, Sofitel Minneapolis, Ritz Carlton Resorts in Laguna Niguel and Fort Lauderdale, Sofitel Chicago Water Tower, and most

recently, Dorado Beach A Ritz Carlton Reserve in Puerto Rico. Those experiences widened his network allowing him to search globally for the right people to work at The Vinoy. “I started working in a different country, but the connections I made there and in the U.S. with other coworkers and guests definitely drove my passion to work in this industry. I look for that same passion when hiring associates for The Vinoy’s restaurants and cocktail lounges.” Clair’s greatest culinary influences include Pierre Gagnaire and Thomas Keller, but he says he learned the most from all of the chefs he worked with during his career, too many to name. He and his family are embracing St. Petersburg and its amazing culinary offerings, as well as the history of food and beverage excellence at The Vinoy. His goal is to be involved in the community and to bring food and beverage to the next level in conjunction with the renovations the hotel will undertake, not only in the restaurants, but also in the guest rooms and amenities. Clair added that he is pleased with the well-equipped existing kitchens at The Vinoy and the availability of products from regional vendors. “When you move here from an island like Puerto Rico, it is like heaven in terms of access to a wide variety of food and beverage resources.”

VINOY CLUB GRILL

ON THE MENU AT PAUL’S LANDING

LOBSTER CAPRESE Ingredients 5 oz. cold water lobster meat ½ ball of burrata cheese 1 oz. of arugula 4 - 5 baby heirloom tomatoes 1 tsp. balsamic reduction 1 tsp. lemon oil or extra light olive oil with a squeeze of lemon salt and pepper to taste

Preparation:

• Poach Lobster meat and chill for a couple of hours. • Reduce 1 cup of balsamic vinegar in a saucepan until it has reduced by almost half. The result will be a more concentrated balsamic flavor. The longer you let the vinegar simmer, the thicker it will get. You will only need 1 tsp. for each plate of Lobster Caprese, but the reduction can be saved for up to three months in a sealed container and refrigerated. • To assemble, toss arugula and tomatoes with salt, pepper and lemon oil. Extra light olive oil can be used; just add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Arrange on a plate and top with burrata and lobster. • Drizzle the balsamic reduction over all and enjoy. The Vinoy 2021

During the summer, weather permitting, relax around the main pool while watching a G- or PG-rated movie on The Vinoy’s large, inflatable screen. Movies begin approximately at sunset, and food and beverage service is available throughout the evening.

“Why do we all want to play the best course? Because golf is a game that engages not only our bodies, but our imaginations and affections.” - Ron Garl

O

TEE UP

riginally created by the legendary John R. Van Kleek, a well-known golf course and landscape architect, the championship Vinoy Golf Course was redesigned by Ron Garl, who believes that a course should, “. . . sit softly on the land.” The Vinoy’s beautifully manicured and scenic greens, a testament to his success, are home to a colorful variety of birds and wildlife. As stimulating to play as it is enjoyable to view, the 18-hole, par-71 course challenges serious golfers while providing an enjoyable round for casual players. A driving range, practice putting green, bunker and chipping area help you hone your game. A certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the course is a refuge for wildlife. Each hole is surrounded by diverse vegetation, including Live Oaks, pines and more than a dozen varieties of palms from around the world, such as Bismarck palms (Bismarckia nobilis), found in Madagascar, and Giant Fishtail palms (Caryota no) from Indonesia. The course is located on picturesque Snell Isle, just minutes from the resort via complimentary transportation. Its clubhouse is another historic treasure, an ornate collection of Spanish and Moorish Renaissance influences that was once a section of a European palace and was brought to St. Petersburg in 1925 by local developer Perry Snell. Designed as a replica of a mosque and open-air market, it features minarets, heavily bracketed cornices, horseshoe and keyhole arches and onion domes. Cool off after your round with a refreshing dip in the clubhouse pool, then enjoy cocktails and a casual meal at the bar and restaurant overlooking the front nine. The pro shop carries the latest golf equipment and accessories, along with fashionable apparel. And, if you’d like a lesson or two (either private or group), sign up with one of the club’s teaching professionals.

THE ORANGE TEES

The Vinoy Golf Course introduced the Orange tees, designed for beginner, junior and super senior players. The course length is just over 3,082 yards and covers the normal 18 holes. The next shortest length set of tees is over 4,925 yards. Today, many kids start playing sports at the ripe old age of 3 or 4 and usually fall in love with one of several options ranging from soccer, basketball, hockey, tennis and baseball, to a long list of other sports. If we don’t promote the pleasures and challenges of golf early enough, the game will be left behind and the next great golfer may end up playing baseball instead. Golf is a wonderful family game and the golf course associates do everything possible to contribute to members’ and guests’ continued growth and enjoyment, especially for the younger players. Ask about the golf rates for children. 50

The romantic 1920s-era waterfront resort has everything couples need to celebrate and relax in style, including: • Relaxing in-room or on-balcony couples’ massages • Two picture-perfect outdoor pools, one that overlooks the Tampa Bay and one that is more private, for some much-deserved alone time • The colorful and spacious Paul’s Landing, whose vibrant menu features traditional Florida flavors with a creative twist, great for sitting fireside and catching a view of the sunset Newlyweds also enjoy exploring the new St. Pete Pier and the city’s many murals and museums, like the world-renowned Dali Museum or Chihuly Collection.
