Ode all’autunno e a noi, pronti a festeggiare il secondo compleanno di Wonder World. “... To put out the world, rather, making it slip away as if it were a circle of yellow things, until smells, light, roots are fused and the wine rises to the grapes...” Thus Pablo Neruda sang his Ode to Autumn, a season of lighted hearthfires, a middle ground between the heat wave that has been and the cold that will arrive. It is my favourite season, full of heady perfumes and crystal clear blue skies; it is, especially, a forerunner of the new year, a dress rehearsal full of promise and renewed enthusiasm. The aromas of grape must and new wine, damp soil, truffles and mushrooms, plus all the enchanting colours from gold to copper, will keep us company one page after the other... Ode to Autumn and to us, ready to celebrate Wonder World’s second anniversary..

The CEO of Air France - KLM is optimistic that Western airlines are already on their way to win back business. Among the aces up their sleeve are fine taste and elegance
Air France has redesigned all its travel classes in just four years – record timing! We had to catch up to the new travel standards. And now we are firmly convinced that Air France-KLM’s future with regard to intercontinental destinations will depend on service of the highest quality and not on competitive fare pricing. We work in Europe, where the cost of living is expensive and we cannot compete with the Asian and Middle Eastern companies in terms of costs. Where we can be competitive is in the field of quality and luxury. If we want passengers to pay for this, to prefer our company, to regard us highly then we need to meet their expectations.
By now it seems like consolidated fact: time spent in-flight is as important as the traveller’s final destination. Exactly. It is now seen as an experience that shuttles travellers from one home to another. For them it starts with the flight reservation and continues in the plane and on the ground, during their stay and back again. So it is up to the airline to make the entire trip as smooth and as simple as possible. Soon we will be launching the limousine service for travellers in La Première as well as private jet connections between Paris and secondary city airports.
Ciò assodato, lasciamo anche spazio all’iniziativa individuale.
For travellers in the higher class sections an all-inclusive luxury package will be replaced by an à la carte service package? Passengers in first class pay large amounts (about eight times more than economy class, ed.) and expect that services be included such as champagne, full-length bed, lounge, high-quality food. But as you can imagine, a connection by private jet is an extra offering that can only be paid for separately, even for those travellers in La Première. But we have to be careful here, if we overstep a certain limit it would be more feasible for clients to do the whole trip by private jet! air france ha rinnovato tutte le classi di viaggio in quattro anni. un tempo record...
You have spoken of a special relationship between Air France and its passengers. Could you give us an example? To perfect their relationship with Air France clients, our cabin staff have studied in the best European hotelier schools as well as in Parisian luxury hotels. However we leave ample space for individual initiative so that if something needs to be resolved – and there’s always some small thing to deal with – then our staff can take care of it quickly and independently, often establishing an excellent spontaneous rapport with the passenger. Another example: the new cabins from economy to La Première class are the result of a continuous exchange of ideas and opinions with thestaff and, especially, with the passengers. No one can tell us more about the needs that arise during a trip. Ci interroghiamo su come intrattenerli sulle tratte lunghe. Magari, in futuro porteremo a bordo uno chef stellato. Intanto, presto implementeremo Internet e wifi. What will be the next luxury that Air France will invent for its passengers? We are examining how to entertain them between one leg of their journey and another. It’s fine to offer thousands of hours of films, television shows, games and music, but then what? During the business class inaugural flight between Paris-New York, we invited the Paris Ritz bartender to make the cocktails. Maybe the next time we’ll take on board aa award-winning master chef. Shortly we will definitely be implementing Internet and a wi-fi connections.

1. CHAMPAGNE AND SACKCLOTH, THIS MUST BE CHIANTI Chianti is one of Italy’s most picturesque and widely-loved areas. And there is always something new to try on the vine and olive tree-lined hills of central Tuscany. For instance the quiet Villa Curina resort, formerly a 16th century home, boasts a view that ranges from the Val d’Orcia to Siena. The same magnificent panorama can be admired from the terrace of the Convito where Giorgio Trovato’s food for well-being is located. Here he raises canapa, studies its gastronomic properties and uses it to make fresh pasta and cookies. In almost all the recipes he substitutes salt with foods that are naturally rich in taste: the result is intense flavours, unexpected aromas, and unusual consistencies. However, without detracting from the wines produced just beyond his doorstep, he offers champagne as his house wine, thus suggesting new wine/food combinations. villacurinaresort.com
2. LOBSTERS AND CRIMES ON THE GÖTEBORG HILLS Inspector Patrick Hedström has a new case to solve: a man has been found in his apartment. But to discover what happened and how “The Lighthouse Attendant” turns out, we’ll have to wait for Camilla Läckberg’s seventh mystery novel due this October, when it’s time to fly to Fjälbacka, a picturesque fishing village near Göteborg, where settings of the popular book series can be visited (consult info@kunstguiden.eu). For instance her novel “The Stonecutter” began with a description of catching lobster, a fishing season that opens in October. In that period the fishermen take tourists out on their boats to help throw out the freshly-baited lobster pots and haul in the full traps. After a half-day at sea, in a flash it’s already dinnertime and the menu features shellfish. The autumn fishing tours should be reserved ahead of time via the tourism board. www.vastsverige.com/en/Shellfishjourney/Lobster-packages/

POSTCARDS FROM SWITZERLAND For a very romantic weekend we suggest the Lake Thun south-east of Bern in Switzerland. Surrounded by always snow-capped mountains, the lake’s southern shores host almost subtropical vegetation. Vineyards flourish around the Bay of Spiez below the lovely old castle. The lake is a good venue for windsurfing throughout the autumn months and boat rides can be arranged to visit the twelve Romanesque churches dotting the shores. To spend the night we suggest a suite at the Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & spa. For more information: www.victoria-jungfrau.ch

3. THE HAGUE: AN IDEAL CITY One thing we know for certain: just one weekend’s visit makes many people want to move to The Hague. A lively city, its cafés are overflowing with people relaxing with friends, a book, a glass of beer. The politicians pedalling towards Parliament on their bikes highlight the city’s ethic. Its high culture is seen in its modern masterpieces, the best Mondrian collection and Escher’s drawings. Here Vermeer’s “Woman with the Pearl Earring” is conserved at the Mauritshuis Museum which has been recently renovated. The Hague is also synonymous with justice, where the Peace Palace. It is at once a royal city (this is where the King’s family lives) and a fashionable centre with young designers and creators at work among more historical boutiques. The moral of the story is that after two days in The Hague visitors return home with more optimism and confidence in the potentialities of the old (and weary) European continent. vww.denhaag.nl 28

4. A SLOW TOUR OF THE SANNIO AREA Autumn makes the Sannio area truly spectacular: the foliage explodes in colourful bursts throughout the centuries-old beechwood forest in the parco del Taburno; bunches of Aglianico grapes hang ready for harvesting, the olive trees are almost ready for picking to begin while mushrooms and truffles abound in the woods. To travel through this inland territory between Benevento e Caserta means to make a slow voyage of discovery into art, culture, nature, gastronomy and fine living. In the woods of Talese Terme reservations should be made at Aquapetra, a splendid hotel made in a restored 18th century hamlet. Here you will be well taken care of in the spa and your palate will be tickled by delicacies of yesterday prepared with contemporary means by chef Luciano Villani. Visit the surroundings with a food & wine shopper who will suggest personalised itineraries to taste and buy wine and olive oil, pecorino cheese from Laticauda, onions from Bonea as well as other typical local specialities. www.aquapetra.com

È noiosa, infelice e poco accogliente, “maneggia” i turisti tiepidamente, li usa e getta, come fossero kleenex. Complimenti. Ora è rinata, come tutta l’Ungheria.

Peccato!». Rush finale e decisamente campanilistico. Ma Roma, Venezia, Firenze e… “el nos gran Milan”? «In ordine. Quasi incredibile, no?»

The Beautiful Ladies of Europe A semi-serious trip around the Old Continent with Philippe Daverio, art critic, journalist, television personality, teacher and generous host par excellence. Philippe Daverio, son of an Italian father and a French mother, is as elegant and straight-forward as the wines of his native Alsace. This cultured but never conceited professor speaks through tales of art and history; he politely makes quotations while touching up his stories with shrewdness and wisdom. We met with him to hear about his most heart-felt journey and instead we discovered that there is no one single trip but rather several places he holds dear. They are all in Europe and the game involves talking about each one as if it were a beautiful woman. Even though... the exception is painful since it touches us closely. “Italy was my big, my truly great love and I emphasise the past tense. A country rich with everything -- any list would be rhetorical. Just look around... exactly, look around. I have travelled the world in Italy, there is not a stone I don’t know. I have crossed it from north to south hundreds of times, both for work and for pleasure. But nowadays I find that it has become a difficult place, especially for travelling. Let me give you a shameful example that happened just recently in Carrara, which is a marvellous city but greedy for profit. Well, maybe not the city itself but those who govern it. I received a fine for two thousand Euros and I still don’t know the reason why! My old automobile dial shows 260,000 kilometres without ever getting into trouble. But once I reached Carrara they taxed me with a traffic violation that I still know
nothing about and that is the equivalent of a middle-range monthly paycheck. At this rate one is forced to travel by train along a network that doesn’t get you everywhere; or to use only highways avoiding city centres because all the urban streets have become limited-traffic zones. This means losing out on Italy’s beauty which is made of small gems of towns, crêche-like villages, winebars and genuine people. And here they want to talk about tourism as a resource?” So ends his observation, a necessary opinion coming from someone who has been a city cultural affairs manager and has described, narrated and taught that “widespread museum” that is Italy. So getting back to our trip, who is the first lady whose praises are to be sung? “Basel is a truly beautiful woman. Developed, cultured, European without being part of the E.U. The museums and churches are beautiful but life flows around the River Rhine where you can navigate, breathe the clean air, contemplate.” Another one: Vienna? “A sad old maid who is caught up in her memories. She was the capital of a great empire, a cultural centre for a past period. She is boring, unhappy and inhospitable, she “handles” tourists in a lukewarm way; to her they are as dispensable as Kleenex. She also feels let down because she had hoped to return to the European stage but that never happened. All she has left are monuments, Sacher Torte and the Prater.” Moving further north, how about the sky over Berlin? “Attractive and exciting. Exquisitely vivaceous and modern. Just like the rest of Germany which programmed its tourism and so won this round as well. It rebuilt the cities obliterated by the

This medieval city has wood beam houses, a cathedral and museums that are rare jewels. ”And now to the west, Paris is well worth a stop-over... “Fascinating and seductive. She still holds the first prize as Europe’s grande dame and she never lets me down. Romantic, sparkling, perfumed and classy. And – just a professional digression – an exceptional network of museums.” And east: Budapest and Prague. “The first is mysterious and surprising, the second is magical. I went to Budapest for the first time in the late 1960s – it was frightening. You could breathe the repression in the air, with police on every corner. Now, like the rest of Hungary, it has been reborn. A beautiful country with nice people and a capital that breathes grandeur. Here the sea is replaced by the calm Lake Balaton; you will find excellent wines and a simple but fine cuisine and a foie gras to die for. Instead Prague seems all magic, be it white or black, it doesn’t matter. It is simply magnificent, restored to a tee. Churches and synagogue live side by side in harmony just like its welcoming citizens. I could take photos forever of its bridges, the Clock Tower, and the cafés. It should be wrapped up carefully and treasured like its crystal and porcelain souvenirs.” Does the Grand Tour stop in London? “Beautiful, there’s no doubt that she is a beautiful lady but a very expensive one. She’s for those who toss money to the wind and for well-to-do young men. She seems more like a victim of fashion when invaded during the sales. Swinging London has given way to Money London. a rather parochial question: but what about Rome, Venice, Florence and... “el nos gros Milan”? “Taken in order I would say that Rome is a great beauty but rather obtuse: she doesn’t exploit her immense potential and she overlooks a unique heritage (that includes winebars). Florence is a mature and pleasing woman who is well aware of her appeal. She is the most striking example of a wide-spread museum. Being so small she can be visited in one day but she can never be completely discovered or fully known, not even if you live two lifetimes there. Venice is a lover full of mystery and secrets. Sinful and holy, she is an absolute masterpiece devoured by hoards of barbarian tripsters. There are only two ways to survive the invasion: letting one’s curiosity take one outside the usual tourist routes to find treasure elsewhere or else having the good luck to live in those areas – alas, too few now – where the true Venetians still live. And finally Milan: a generous mother with a fertile belly and warm arms. This city is the true door to Italy because the whole world travels through it but they are often hurried and distracted travellers that come and go without looking closely. Let me end with a meaningful and little-known statistic, verified by the Holy Edifice: some five million tourists climb to the top of the Milan cathedral every year .

Craft is a traditional kind of task derived from everyday needs whereas art implies perfecting a creative technique. In both cases knowing hands originate unique objects like the ones most sought after today. Indeed rarity, as a quality, is preferred over seriality and Adagio Art Agency knows how to handle this pressing need by scouting high-quality pieces. Works to wear and not just accessories. Creations of highly artistic craftsmanship in marble, paper, copper, wood, glass. These make art travel the world, as nomadic as man is in his constant search for identity.

AUTUNNO
E
È il cosmetico base su cui poggia ogni make up.

MEDITERRANEAN HAUTE CUISINE The best porcini mushrooms (and truffles) in Rome can be found in the restaurants of two large hotels: the Red Library, the highly refined eatery for 25 guests at the Bosco Aleph, and The Roof at the Grand Hotel Ritz, which boasts a spectacular view of the Villa Glori in the capital’s Parioli quarter. In both cases the menus are the work of Gaetano Costa, a Neapolitan chef who has worked in Rome for many years. His special delight is to transform the delicacies of the woods and his dishes are worthy of first-class awards: starting from pasta or rice courses and then moving on to succulent meats or unusual fish dishes. This creative chef is working on his ambitious project to build an Haute Cuisine brand of Mediterranean food that can be exported world-wide. For now he directs the two Roman restaurants to the praise of critics and public alike, who applaud his cooking and his philosophy. www.gaetanocosta.net

DIVINE FOOD LEADS TO PARADISE When in Paradiso di Pocenia, located in the Friuli region, diners must stop at the Trattoria Al Paradiso. Here, in an early 16th century home, chef Annamaria Mauro serves straight-forward specialties fished directly from the salt-water lagoon of Marano. The keys to her success are the locally-produced foods with all the countryside aromas and the freshness provided by the nearby lagoon. Such fresh quality means that the menu changes according to the seasons so in autumn diners will find excellent mushrooms and meat dishes featuring water fowl, pate’ of gadwall duck, mushroom stew, timbales of poultry as well as mini-timbales of wood mushrooms with a Montasio cheese cream sauce with aromatic herbs and tagliatelle pasta with white truffles. The wine cellar also follows the rule of the land; Nature herself suggests that one flavour tone be balanced by another, that one savoury morsel accompany another. www.trattoriaparadiso.it
DINNER AT THE PALAZZO In Albignano, an area of Truccazzano (about 12 miles from Milan), diners can take a step back in time. The Le Due Colonne eatery is waiting for them inside an eighteenth century noble home which was once the residence of the Anguissola noble family. This countryside eatery is full of surprises starting from the warm welcome – it is like being at a friend’s home but in this case you must reserve ahead. The food served is typically regional and especially local, made of home-cured meats, breads and cheeses, risottos and pasta dishes and lots of meat, which is the true speciality of the house. Beef, foal, pork, lamb and game cooked in almost every conceivable way: grilled, boiled, stewed, steak slices and, when they are in season, an avalanche of mushrooms: the most wonderfully-perfumed porcini imaginable, tasty chanterelles and honey mushrooms, each served separately or in mouth-watering combinations. www.osterialeduecolonne.it

Informatica, industria, telecomunicazioni, trasporti sono all’avanguardia.

INDIA IN PRoGRESS
Southern India: From Tamil nadu, kerala and karnataka to Mumbai. An inside look at a country in rapid expansion and looking towards a bright future
India runs, India is always on the move, India never sleeps. You see this as soon as you arrive. There is never a let-up in the traffic, the heat, the noise, the continuous honking of car-horns. Your senses are always hyper-stimulated, all of them all the time! You realise right away that if this is to be your “relaxing holiday” you’d better take your unopened bags back to the airport and catch the first flight for a Swiss mountaintop or a Maldive atoll. This is no place of peace, no Nirvana – you must earn serenity by learning patience, changing opinion about many – sometimes unacceptable – things that you had always taken for granted. Don’t be fooled by the bright-coloured saris, by the elephants, camels, monkeys and pigs who live alongside the people in cities and countryside alike.
Neither should you allow the ancient and beautiful temples created by the Indian people’s great spirituality to take you in. This is not an archaic country, or at least that’s not its only aspect. India runs on a double track: the first one is traditional and includes castes, arranged marriages, and multitudes of poor beggars while the second one is modernity. In the last decade India has exploded as an economic, technological and scientific power; a key member of BRIC, it is a leader among the emerging countries which are challenging the “first world”. Computer technology, industry, telecommunications, and transport have reached avant-guard levels here. However the path to achieve these goals is quite different from the West: at some times naïve, at others miraculously efficient. One

example is the food delivery to workers in Mumbai: the delivery men pick up thousands of dinner pails prepared at home and deliver them to the workers in their offices in time for lunch. They never make a mistake and the unconventional model has been studied by Forbes Magazine; mistakes are rare and one of them inspired a wonderful love story told in the 2013 film Lunch Box by Ritesh Batra. So what should you look for today when you travel to Southern India? Of course the beautiful people, their eyes and smiles, their elegant bearing. Of course their beautiful places like Tamil Nadu, the palm groves, waterways, and rain forests as well as Kerala’s spice and tea plantations. But also the beautiful archaeological and religious sites of the Karnataka area where splendid temples and richly massive towers, sites of pilgrimage and devotion, reveal a very complex and transforming world of deities, a paradigm of this country’s reality and multiplicity.

Indeed India really is overwhelming. It is a mutant organism, it is the place where you really feel that you are living in real time without any before or after. Life, no matter what form it comes in, is here and now. In India good and evil are not contrasting but are complimentary and so finally allow us to suspend our judgements. Here fatalism, applied to the major themes of existence, protects and pacifies man because, in final analysis, not everything is in his power: life is in command and it is up to man to live it as best he can. Extreme poverty and wealth live side by side and in contact. On entering Mumbai travellers follow a wide street that leads to a futuristic suspended bridge; in the background the skyline of white skyscrapers and Art Deco buildings dots the Arabian Sea coastline. It seems like an American metropolis but the illusion doesn’t last long because this opulence rises out of one endless shanty-town that grows up, like a strangling vine,

around the base of the tall buildings. It is unclear whether it is a war between two separate worlds or a symbiosis between two complementary realms. Travellers visiting the quarter of the washermen witness some three thousand people hand-washing and ironing laundry from the railway company, large hotels and regular citizens - it is clear that such a system survives according to a complex equilibrium where opposing realities are actually in deep synergy. But at a certain point the traveller’s mind needs a break. I found the perfect solution on a large houseboat that took me on a two-day trip down Kerala’s canals, all seeming alike yet different. There was no apparent destination as we navigated through nature’s noisy silence. The monsoon rain downpoured violently on the water, the wind blew the palm trees. We stopped at sundown because tourist houseboats are not allowed to navigate at night when they would disturb the fishermen and their

livelihood. Out of the dark void, a small boat with a tiny lantern appeared and passed on. We saw an old woman there, coming close to us without speaking, she held out her hand for an offering in exchange for taking her photo. She didn’t even slow down but continued to paddle noiselessly along: it seemed like Charon’s ferryboat. The dark called her back into the void, not even a small wake lingered. Did that really happen? Then the phone rang and I snapped back into reality, thinking Wake up, we’re in India, here everything is possible!

The Man and the Land
The carved monumental doorways of Medieval cathedrals record the passage of time which was both, as the wise Honorius of Autun wrote, holy time and man’s temporal period. In reality the time allowed mankind was reflected in, and subordinated to, holy time; it was comprehensible only through the daily measurement of a man’s work. Indeed the Medieval portal sculptures show the peasants’ long and hard labour via scenes of farmland chores which were arranged according to the seasons. Once summer was over the year’s remaining months were spent finishing the grape harvest, making wine, then ploughing the fields anew. November was the month allotted to sowing new crops while the first snow clouds rallied the community to bring provisions indoors in time for the long winter months. Finally December brought the butchering of the pig or the wild boar, of which every scrap was used; this meat was needed to nourish the families until springtime and was also the crowning dish for the Christmas feast. This way of living by following the earth’s rythmns has occupied humankind down to modern times and, in some parts of the world - ever more remote from our experience - it still holds true. The work of the poor people in the countryside and the need to find food, not riches, as the aim of life: these were the main tenets of existence when the young artist Vincent Van
Gogh began his painting career. Openly revealing his debt to the visual poetics of the masters of “social romanticism”, the young Dutchman started out by drawing studies of paintings by Millet and Daumier. For him drawing constituted the copybook in which he could document the progress of his art; it was also the instrument that allowed him to mature towards his own technique. To use Van Gogh’s own words he learned art “like a child learns to write.” Van Gogh worked between naturalism and realism on rural life, taking the farm laborers as the subjects of his first paintings. For him peasant culture was a social icon, an ethical model that represented purity because it was the result of everyday toils. The best example of this view was immortalised in his famous canvas titled, “The Potato Eaters”. The peasants’ gazes - whether turned towards or away from the viewer - shine with intensity in spite of the low illumination. To Van Gogh the untiring farmworkers, the humble and dignified basis of a world that seems far removed to us today, represented a small part which was also, simultaneously, the whole. This conception found a correspondence in his handling of paint; his works are characterised by thick patches of colour applied in small brush-strokes. Seen from farther away we recognise the scenes of his masterpieces but a closer view breaks the images down into tiny juxtapositions of distinct and tactile colour. The artist saw inside himself more clearly when he was depicting these figures’ lives; in his painting he was finding a way to dialogue with the world and seeking a remedy to partially alleviate his own psychological condition. He wrote that art allowed him to dispel the “feeling of such impotence in the face of nature.” Time and nature might be answers to the problems faced by our ever-evolving society which is also ever more pragmatic and individualistic. To turn our gaze to the land would be not just an exercise in humility but might even allow us one day to raise our eyes toward the skies and beyond.

Comunque, una cosa è evidente, qualunque attività si sia venuti a fare. hen traveling we often choose first the place and then we look for the hotel. But is not always working that way. Increasingly we do exactly the opposite: we choose a resort and then we visit the surroundings. This is the case of Royal Palm Marrakech, the latest addition to the Beachcomber Hotels family. Surfing by chance on its website you cannot avoid to click on new windows that open pictures of high living rooms with Moorish finishes, vintage lanterns, lights that filter through embroidered grating. And as you continue, you discover spacious rooms and terraces overlooking the mountains, swimming pools surrounded by palm trees, green meadows, and romantic tables. At this point, it is impossible not to imagine being there, eating the steaming tajine lamb, go inside the marble hammam, sip the mint tea while sitting in the velvet living room on the terrace of your suite and wait for the promised sunset, red as fire. At the end of this fantasy we ask ourselves where this wonderful place is. Wherever the resort is you are willing to go. Imagine then if the location is Marrakech where frequent visitors always want to back and anyone who has not visited yet would

like to go. The Royal Palm is not in the Medina but a dozen kilometers away, on an estate which does not lack space or horizons. The facility is new, designed respecting the environment and the Berber architecture. Lines, style and colors
are reconceived and inspired by the ancient mosques, Koranic schools and nomads’ tents. The entrance is a huge space with a 12-meter high glass wall open towards the Atlas Mountain, the premise of a grandeur that distinguishes the entire residence. Finished with marble and highquality materials, and decorated with bespoken furniture, Berber carpets, fabrics of the fifties of
Perrouin, design chandelier and wrought-iron lamps made by Moroccan blacksmiths artists. Everywhere is like this: in the public areas and in the 135 villas and suites, many with veranda and views facing the contemporary gardens and the olive trees. Here are the heated pool of 2000 square meters and the 18-hole course designed by Cabell B. Robinson (6,608 m. - Par 72), one of the most scenic in the country.

It is obvious that a visit to Marrakech is a must. It would be a shame not to do it. But the days at the resort fly; with an intimate Moroccan atmosphere and style, is in itself a destination. Romantic for couples, fun for families. Indeed, children are welcomed guests and for them it was built a club open until midnight with a large tree house and a herd of sheep. There are outdoor games, swing on the green lessons, craft and ceramics classes as well as dance, yoga and calligraphy clinics. For the kids there is also a restaurant where to educate their taste to the haute cuisine and learn how to make marshmallow, pancakes and popcorn. The Executive Chef is the renowned Philippe Jourdin, who oversees the kitchen of the three restaurants - The Caravans, serving international cuisine, L’Olivier, contemporary kitchen, the Moroccan Al Ain managed only by women. The bran bread is homemade, and the oil is from the estate. The attention to local products is one of the characteristics of the Royal Palm, which indeed becomes its ambassador. In the signature Clarins Spa is offered a treatments’ selection that strictly follow the famous international brand. In the nail bar and hairdressing salon hair and nails are made like in the best salons in Paris. When you ask for the Moroccan treatments, cosmetics are local with the best quality, like the black scrub soap provided during the traditional bath. Remise en forme and wellness go together in the sports center with an Olympic-size pool and tennis and squash courts. A personal trainer is at disposal for special training and advice on the fitness and cardio program, Pilates and Kinesis. However, one thing is clear, anything you will do, the Royal Palm Marrakech is the synthesis and the essence of the place where it lies. The flavors, the perfumes, the air remind of it in every square centimeter of its 300 hectares. Once back no one can ignore or forget of being in the beautiful Red City.

This reserve was founded by Madeleine Pickens, the wealthy philanthropist and animal rights activist, who wanted to save horses raised for the meat industry. To achieve her dream she bought 500,000 acres of Nevada prairie where today over 600 mustangs gallop freely in complete safety. Since last June the project has expanded with the opening of an eco-resort whose rooms are hand-painted tepee tents, with wood floors, carpeting, leather chairs, terraces and butler service. Each small house is conceived to respect the place’s quietude and natural beauty. Guests ride horses on the property, learn to use a lasso and to saddle and shoe horses; they also enjoy the typical pleasures of a luxury resort, from the spa to the after-dinner drink. Everything is done in the Wild West style, so your spa treatments are done inside the tepee and you sip aged whiskey around the camp-fire listening to music written by Woody Guthrie. mustangmonument.com

Although it is the sixth largest national territory in the world, with only 23 million inhabitants Australia counts a population that is less than half of Italy’s. This means that any wanderer can feel himself to be the first and last human being to cross the continent’s immense and lonely expanses. This is especially true for hikers attempting the Scenic Rim, a 22 mile path to cover in four days; inaugurated last June it starts at the foot of the Great Dividing Range in south-east Queensland. Heading out early in the morning, participants walk for 4-6 hours a day up the mountains, along the crests, down deep notches and through forests and volcanic highlands. When they arrive at the camps – Spicers Canopy with safari-style tents and Spicers Peak Lodge – trekkers are welcomed with gourmet dinners around the camp-fires, wine-tastings with sommeliers, relaxing massages. Once the endeavour has been completed the adventures continue with sightings of kangaroos and koalas, mountain bike rides, and helicopter flights for aerial views. scenicrimtrail.com SELVAggIO QUEEnSLAnD: CAMMInARE TUTTO IL gIORnO PER ARRIVARE ALLA SERA In Un RIFUgIO COnFORTEVOLE COn CAMInO, CEnA LUCULLIAnA E LETTI kIng SIzE SOTTO LA TEnDA wilD queenslanD. an all-Day hike will GeT you, By eveninG, To a comforTaBle loDGinG comPleTe wiTh firePlace, GourmanD Dinners anD kinG-siZe BeDs unDer The TenTs

Few villages are truly deserving of the “dream-like” category and the Australian Red Centre, with the mountain of Uluru (or Ayers Rock) is one of them. The red monolith suddenly soars up out of the flattest stretch of land that you can imagine. It is always there on the horizon like a marvellous revelation when you use the remote control to raise the blinds in your Longitude 131 tent-suite. There is no better base-camp from which to discover and experience this magical landscape; enjoy steaming coffee and delicious croissants before leaving on the dawn excursions to Uluru-Kata Tjuta Park. When you return you’ll fuel up with eggs and bacon, and then light lunches by expert chef Seona Mossand. Later you’ll have a champagne and canap aperitif at the foot of the holy mountain. Dinner is served outdoors with aborigine music and dancing as well as a lesson on stars and planets in the sky’s other hemisphere. It’s easy to understand why William and Kate chose to stay in this very place during their recent visit to Australia, don’t you think? longitude131.com.au
The style harks back to Robinson Crusoe, and the name promises what it indeed turns out to be: in the Panamanian Caribbean, just off the Bocas del Toro, you really do live in a “natural” way, with no frills. You sleep on bamboo beds with draped mosquito netting in bungalows hidden in the jungle or in houses built on stilts above the sand; all the accommodations have a missing wall facing towards the sea. So you can laze in an armchair, staying cool under the ceiling fan, to enjoy in complete privacy the view of the marine park and passing parades of dolphins. Pareu and flip-flops are the ultimate dress you’ll need to rock in a hammock or swim through the coral gathering starfish in this unusual Caribbean venue. On the dock the lobsters are, literally, handcaught. Throw them on the coals and eat them in good company. Or else choose from the Belgian chef Vincent’s gourmet menus which also include creole dishes. alnaturalresort.com

A night in the desert of Ash Sharqiyah Sands, with its red dunes and clear starry skies, is an experience you’ll remember all your life. If you are sleeping at Desert Nights Camp, two hours away from Mascate, you’ll want to spend another thousand nights more all in that one place. The camp has 26 tents and bungalows (some connecting ones for families) which elegantly reinterpret the interiors of Bedouin homes with pillows, carpets and lanterns. They have bathrooms with hot running water and air conditioning, as well as a restaurant with Arab and international food. In the daytime take excursions on camel back along the dunes,in the evening listen to music played by traditional groups or by oud (Arab lute) musicians. scenicrimtrail.com

Anyone travelling to Cambodia will naturally want to visit the temples at Angkor Wat, in Siem Rap, even if the site’s splendour has been quite disturbed by insensitive tourists. That’s how it goes and the temples should be seen, photographed and remembered as spectacular. However it is quite a different story to move on to Banteay Chhmar, three and a half hours from Siem Rap, to stay in one of two tents 76

It has not yet been studied or protected and you can easily count on being either on your own or with very few other people as you walk around the marvellous Khmer ruins. The camp-site is serviced by the people in the local village who, in this way, receive an important direct source of income. Once it is taken down, the camp-site leaves not a trace of its passing except a few square yards of flattened grass. khiri.com
In 1878 the English explorer Florence Dixie was the first woman to cross Patagonia. On horseback with her husband and brothers-in-law they travelled the steppe and in the evenings set up camp at the foot of the Torres del Paine. There, after a frugal meal of oats and milk, Lady Florence would write in her diary which was later published (“Across Patagonia”) as the first geographical and literary account of the region. In one of those precarious outposts there is now a very beautiful lodge furnished like a contemporary ranch. From here, just like in the late 19th century, you can still admire today the same massive mountains and wide prairies where condors fly overhead and llamas, armadillos, jaguars and wild horses share the land. The only difference is that you don’t sleep in a tent but rather in an elegant bedroom with wood stove and outdoor tub. And the restaurant menu is anything but basic ranch fare: as you admire the breath-taking landscape you can enjoy crab lasagne and roast leg of Patagonia lamb. Mountain bikes and Jeeps with drivers are available to all guests wanting to explore the surrounding national park. awasipatagonia.com

where Passito wine is Born A seashore winery grows the sweet varietals for the Moscato dessert wine that has put the island on the map A recent discovery in Nahariya in northern Israel brought to light the 40 amphorae filled with wine made 3700 years ago. What must that nectar of history tasted like and is there a wine today that can recall that flavour of antiquity? Experts say that the Passito produced on Pantelleria is the wine that comes closest to what was made in ancient times with its mix of mint, citron, honey, resin and cinnamon overtones. It is the island’s climate that allows growth and maturation of the fine varietal vines needed to make this special wine. The best vineyards grow on the south-east side of the island and that’s where we went to visit a winery whose vines almost reach down to the tide-mark. The property 82

includes several dammusi, the typical stone buildings covered by whitewash, that dot the Mediterranean underbrush and vineyards. Built using ancient techniques passed on from father to son, the dammusi were used as shelters by farmers who walked down to tend the fields near the shore. Everything served a criterion of practicality, such as the curved roofs that allow the rainwater to run off and collect in underground cisterns. Over the years the dammusi lost their original function and have been transformed into holiday homes. The splendid panoramic location, the curving forms, the contrasting materials and colours – whitewash against dark volcanic rock –
inspired restorations that have been respectful of the outdoor environment. Also creative in indoor design, these buildings make very appealing abodes. The area of Pantelleria’s vineyards is mostly wild; the absolute silence is interrupted only by the seagulls’ cry and the sound of the waves breaking against the rocks. Towards the evening, before dark, the swallows fly among the pine trees and, on a full-moon, there is nothing more enchanting than to watch the red disk rise from the water. In this magical place with its smells of salt air and pines a miracle recurs every year: the maturation of the grapes that are harvested in August to make the island’s famous Passito wine.
DAI DOLCISSIMI CHICCHI D’UVA, CHE CRESCONO MEGLIO IN QUESTA PARTE DELL’ISOLA, NASCE IL LEGGENDARIO PASSITO di pantelleria THIS PART OF THE ISLAND IS WHERE THE VERY SWEET GRAPES ARE GROWN TO MAKE THE LEGENDARY PANTELLERIA PASSITO WINE

No, it is not the Trivial game but just a small example of the historical events that took place in a grand Parisian hotel in the Avenue de Kleber, near the Arc de Triomphe. The Déco facility of the Hotel, with large rooms and elegant furnishings, was indeed a magnificent setting suitable for artists, intellectuals and for the international diplomatic meetings. Past the glorious years, it ended up being a bit into oblivion. Huge works and astronomical sums were necessary to bring it back to splendor. PARIS today, after four years of uninterrupted work of three thousand workers, craftsmen and architects, the Peninsula Paris opened to the public. “This is an extraordinary opening for the group, - said the CEO Clement Kwok - because it inaugurates a collection of top hotels in the major cities the world. “ This will surely increase the hospitality
level, we add, considering the Parisian result. The building indeed not only came back to life but acquired greater grandeur. The historical value and the early twenties atmosphere have been preserved thanks to the faithful and accurate restoration. However the result of the project by the interior designer Henry Leung and the architect Richard Martinet is an absolutely contemporary five star luxury hotel. In the avenue Kléber lobby stucco, mosaics, gilding and marble were made with bespoke furnishings, drapes and silks and chandelier designed specifically for The Peninsula Paris. on l’arrivo della stagione fredda chi non sogna un rifugio in un caldo e confortevole chalet di montagna?

nirikos presents a particular retreat for the upcoming fall and winter seasons: a place nested in a beautiful area of the French Alps, Le Chalet Zannier is located in the authentic alpine village of Megève. It’s called Le Chalet Zannier. It has 12 bedrooms, a private spa and a movie theatre. The authentic and contemporary decor blends patina wood, antique objects, stone and white or beige linen, all designed to create a warm and cozy space and a universe of luxury while still remaining simple and authentic. Chef Marc Veyrat dismantled and restored his father’s farm to create a nostalgic, typically Savoyard hotel. Arnaud Zannier turned it into a minimalist, ultra stylized boutique mountain hotel employing the formula of the visionary Leonardo da Vinci: “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”. The tone is set immediately in the salon-library which is also the reception office, with natural materials, stone washed linen for the couches, old wood for the tables, earthen colors and furniture gathered from all over France and Italy.

suites we find the same unity and tonality in the decor. The simplicity of the authentic and contemporary interior architecture, with its patina walls, blends perfectly with the imperfection of the antique objects, the stone and the white or beige linen to create a warm and cosy space. Wherever one looks, there’s the feeling that great importance and respect has been paid to the integration of local traditions and knowhow. In the suites, the living room with its fireplace is on the ground floor and the bedroom on the first floor, with two large terraces that cover the entire villa, offering an exceptional view of the skiable area and the village of Megève. In this exceptional boarding house, a space is naturally dedicated to wellness. In a very pure decor, with the walls covered with natural whitewash paint, guests can take advantage of a variety of massages and therapeutic treatments after a long day of skiing. An indoor relaxation pool invites to relax by swimming a few laps. On all levels, Le Chalet Zannier’s goal is to return to the fundamentals of private hospitality. The restaurant is in the same image as the rest of the hotel and proposes a cuisine consisting of seasonal products and ingredients assembled simply by the French Chef, Julien Burlat, well known to customers of the Dome in Antwerp. In the salon, alongside the fireplace or on the sunny terrace, guests can black truffle or an “Alpille lamb” and live the moment in total simplicity.

The Langhe’s Great Flavours Barolo wine is a jewel. Ruby-red, it is one of the great Italian wines to open for a special occasion. It is made from Nebbiolo grapes in the Piedmont’s Langhe area which last year was included, together with Roero and Monferrato, in UNESCO’s world heritage programme. The U.N. Organisation recognised the Langhe for its unique landscape design, for its ordered vineyards, forests of hazel-nut trees, and ancient hamlets. This month autumn foliage transforms all these features in impressionistic flashes of yellow, red and orange. Whether travelling on foot or by bicycle there is always time to stop for contemplation and tasting. Yes, because – apart from the wine – you’ll enjoy the great tradition of Piedmont cuisine with its abundant antipasti, the meat and vegetable-filled agnolotti di plin, veal with light tuna sauce, chocolate-amaretto bunet cake. The very precious white truffles are the object of Italy’s most important truffle fair/market held in nearby Alba (October 11 – November 16, fieradeltartufo.org). Indeed in just a few square miles you’ll find the highest concentration of Michelin stars in Italy. However there is only one five-star place: the Boscareto wine resort in Serralunga d’Alba with its wellness/fitness centre ;completed by a pool overlooking the hills. The rooms are spaced apart and dining is a delight made to order by promising chef Pasquale Laera. He is equally gifted when it comes to preparing meat dishes (Piedmont specialties) and fish recipes, which he brought from his native Taranto. His menu ranges from “saffron rice, crunchy red-pepper pods, sauce, ox bones and Bra sausage” to the “pasta with mussels”; this latter very popular dish is made with haute cuisine techniques learned from a maestro, Antonio Cannavacciuolo, who is the resort’s food director. White gloves deliver the plates to the table and raise the covers to reveal the beautifully arranged dish, the sommelier illustrates the wine coming from a nearby cellar. The surrounding vineyards are the backdrop for savouring the food and contemplating the evening; but they can also be the landscape to walk through during daytime treks using farm paths. In fact from Boscareto several guided excursions lead into the countryside with stops for tasting the best cru, like the Barolo Briccolina which undergoes a long fermentation process and has a decided mineral flavour. It isa perfect accompaniment to the “merenda sinoira”, a traditional frugal meal of bread-sticks, hazel nuts, various salami and cheeses served with grape-must jam. 94

WINE STORY
To discover this area the best way is to wander, allowing the quiet hills and charming hamlets to capture your imagination; stop in cellars here and there to taste and buy wine, to uncover craftsmen and antique dealers, to lunch in restaurants, farm lodges or eateries where meat (try the Rovato beef ) and fish (baked Clusane tench) balance the offerings. Between one cellar and another, you’ll still have time to search for art; for instance in Rodengo Saiano the abbey of San Nicola houses works by Foppa, Romanino, Moretto, Gambara and other artists of the 16-17th centuries. Or try Ome where you can visit the 15th century Maglio Averoldi, a blacksmith shop still functioning today and showing the history of iron-working, a traditional craft in this area. Instead in Provaglio d’Iseo you’ll find the monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa, a Romanesque gem which also boasts a beautiful view over the Sebino peat bogs. Another magnificent panorama can be had in Rovato where from the Convent dell’Annunciata on Monte Orfano you can see the Road of Franciacorta Wines winding over hills and plain. stradadelfranciacorta.it

This is a land to discover and to savour, where hospitality is an art – whether it be welcoming travellers to cellars to have them taste the wines, or putting them up in small distinctive hotels or in refined farm lodgings; travellers will also enjoy dining in award-winning restaurants or in small eateries where authentic flavours can be re-discovered. Franciacorta hills are carpeted with vines, medieval towers, noble villas, all devoted to wine production. DOCG cultivation covers 7,000 acres and the bottles produced are some 15 million (in 2013) with an export increase in the double digits.

WINE STORY Bolgheri, la vite e la dolce vita in Toscana
I
Bolgheri, Vines and the Dolce Vita in Tuscany Troubadours still live on in Italy and they can be found anywhere there is a good tale to tell. This is the role of the vintners in Bolgheri, a blessed terroir within the town limits of Castagneto Carducci. Here some forty producers interpret the “message in the bottle” via endless words, adjectives, and metaphors; in the wake of their allusions dazed listeners fill their glasses and experience the tale via their senses. Wine is a living material that speaks of very ancient lands, experiments and failures, hard-headed stubbornness and wildly happy endings. This is what happens in Bolgheri where traditionally only san giovese varietals were cultivated. Just a few miles away this same grape produced such noble red wines as Brunello di Montalcino but, between Castagneto’s sea and hillsides, it never gave satisfactory results. It seemed impossible to get a truly good wine out of it. Until Mario Incisa of the Rocchetta vineyard, against scientific opinion, planted cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot vines. Right from the beginning they showed amazing vocation: the first Sassicaia was born and, in a blindfolded tasting held in London in 1978, it even won over the great Bordeaux labels. It was the grand-sire of the recent Bolgheri superiore (its DOC appellation was awarded in 1985) which produces wines with very different personalities but all equally refined, long-lasting and high quality. The producers say that it is a wine you can buy eyes closed because – no matter what vintage, producer, terrain is involved – the excellence is guaranteed. Not something you find everyday! Every cellar has a history as well as a bright, proud troubadour ready to sing the virtues of his wines and the terrain. Because this land is “kissed by God. You wake up in the

morning thinking it’s all a dream,” says Federico Zileri, President of the Consortium of Bolgheri DOC Wines (bolgheridoc.com), as he overlooks the vineyards and olive groves towards the sea. Instead it truly does exist. It is a countryside as generous with its wine as it is with everything else. The restaurants prepare Tuscan dishes, including wild boar, and in the Bolgheri hamlets you can walk through Medieval streets among basins of flowers without being disturbed by cars. The wide beaches of the Etruscan coast are all to be explored as are the landscapes that inspired Italy’s great poet Giosué Carducci; he wrote not only about the cypress trees’ “scented shadows” but also about the gargantuan glutfeeds in taverns. Everything around Bolgheri has stayed the same, making it an ideal place for a holiday, or even a weekend, of rest and silence.

WINE STORY Umbria - la strada del Sagrantino
S
Umbria The Road of Sagrantino Wines If the Saint Francis group of museums is a precious art trove in Montefalco, a Medieval hamlet near Perugia, then the red sagrantino wine produced by the indigenous varietal is its enological gem. The museum housed in the ancient church consecrated to the saint from Assisi includes a magnificent apse frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli in 1452 with the recently-restored “Stories of the Life of Saint Francis.” Viewers will also notice a 1503 “Nativity” by Perugino, paintings by other artists as well as a valuble wooden crucifix and the historical tubs for wine-making that were excavated during the works to consolidate the building. Art and wine are two features emphasised by the Road of Sagrantino that aims to promote this beautiful enological territory which includes Bevagna, another Medieval jewel and one of Italy’s most beautiful villages. Our wine tour begins in the renowned Arnaldo Caprai cellar (www.arnaldocaprai.it) that is managed today by his son Marco who is very actively proposing new products. Another beautiful cellar is Antonelli San Marco (www.antonellisanmarco.it) an enotouristic venue where Filippo Antonelli suggests activities like “cellar cooking” courses, tastings paired to local specialties, hospitality and pool time in the Casa Satriano where there are walking trails mapped out among the vineyards and woods. Here the sagrantino takes different forms but the whole production is certified organic. Another must-see stop is the Scacciadiavoli cellar (www.scacciadiavoli.it) founded in 1884 that today has an “industrial chic” look to its facilities and a series of interesting wines. For a quick jump from antiquity to today, go to Bevagna to see the spectacular Carapace designed by famed artist Arnaldo Pomodoro; the tortoise shell cellar-sculpture was commissioned by the Lunelli family of Tenuta Castelbuono (www.tenutacastelbuono.it) to leave their mark on modern functional architecture. The centre of Bevagna has remained intact since the Middle Ages and you should see the central square with the church of San Michele and the Palazzo dei Consoli and Teatro Torti. Hungry? Try these addresses: in Montefalco, da Giorgione alla via di mezzo (ww.ristoranteallaviadimezzo.it) where tv chef Giorgio Barchiesi offers home-made Umbrian cooking with local ingredients; or in Bevagna, Osteria Scottadito where Marco Biagetti and Rosita Cariani served grilled meats from the family butchery and their own pork-salted cold cuts.
vigne e ancora vigne dai mille colori si rincorrono su dolci colline: i filari pettinati di Antonelli e le ottocentesche cantine di scacciadiavoli votate al nobile sagrantino Vines and more vines stretch in bright colours up the soft hillsides: Antonelli ‘s well-kept vines and the 19th century Scacciadiavoli cellars are devoted to sagrantino production

Text and photos by Massimiliano Rella

ceraudo a strongoli marina. Vini eccellenti e cucina da gourmet An Ionian Sea postcard: in Roberto Ceraudo’s Dattilo winery in Strongoli Marina, you ll’ find excellent wines and gourmet food
CALABRIA, Ancient Vineyards in the Sea Air This is a fertile and hospitable land, a happy venue for gourmets. The Ionic seacost near Crotone is better known for its clear blue waters and its ochre-coloured sand than for its excellent food and wines. But in this area there is a high concentration of producers who safeguard the traditional flavours, who innovate, or who do both. Of all of them the one that best represents knowledge of the territory that is respectful of the past while being modern, is the Dattilo farm-stay property (www. dattilo.it) belonging to Roberto Ceraudo. Wines made from indigenous grapes like gaglioppo and magliocco, organic extra-virgin oil pressed from carolea and round Strongoli cultivar olives as well as juicy clementines are all produced following nature’s dictates. The wine tourist can reserve rooms in one of the farm buildings and enjoy the pool among the centuries-old olive trees. At the end of a relaxing day you’ll want to enjoy the refined cooking by chef Caterina Ceraudo who is young but already headed for success. Producers who prefer Calabrian indigenous grapes include Librandi (www.librandi.it) and Ippolito 1845. The former is the region’s largest and most innovative winery which for years has been experimenting with ancient and local grapes from gaglioppo to pecorello producing elegant wines that can be tasted in the cellar. The historical winery managed by brothers Vincenzo and Gianluca Ippolito, young graduates in management, also produces Calabrian grapes in organic vineyards. The Crotone area boasts many gourmet items apart from wine, such as the aged ricotta and sheep’s cheese both made at the Masseria de Tursi (www.masseriadetursi.it). Their flavourful and slightly spicy pecorino is made from milk provided by the free-range family flocks. A true gourmet rarity is the sardelle from Crucoli Torretta, a tasty condiment made form the Ionic Sea’s pilchardus sardine mixed with ground red pepper and wild fennel. Saverio Fontana of the Coop La Torre is one of the few who still produces it according to tradition. If you are looking for fresh local fish, you’ll find it ready on the table at Da Ercole restaurant (www.ristorantedaercole.eu) where the menu includes raw and cooked dishes. And lastly, at Trattoria Max (www.trattoriamax.it) the dishes by chef Salvatore Murano feature the day’s catch.

Sicilia - nelle terre del Gattopardo
L
In the Land of the Leopard The Belice valley is a piece of land that slopes down towards Africa from which it is separated by only a thin strip of sea. A generous and complex territory, this landscape is wild and the coasts are modelled by the winds from the south. It is in this untouched landscape that the Cantine Settesoli wines originate (www.cantinesettesoli.it) with all their body and distinctive character. A legacy of vineyards that range from local Mediterranean grapes like Grecanico, Inzolia, and Nero d’Avola to those imported recently like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio as well as by the innovative Sauvignon Blanc or Alicante Bouschet. Thanks to the excellent results the cultivation has gone from micro-implants to large-scale production. This has resulted in a series of excellent labels obtained by selected grapes brought to the perfect maturation point and pressed on-site using the territory’s customs, traditional methods and innovative technology. This is the land of “The Leopard” (indeed the name Settesoli comes from a property mentioned in Tomasi di Lampedusa’s famous novel) and specifically on the Road of Wines of the Sicane Area which includes Menfi, Contessa Entellina, Sciacca, Santa Margherita del Belice and Sambuca di Sicilia. This rural territory lives alongside the archaeological treasures of Selinunte and Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples. Founded by a group of vintners in Menfi in 1958, Settesoli is the largest Sicilian wine grower and the largest vineyard in Europe. While talking about statistics, the farm counts 2,000 member vintners, four wineries and a working capacity of about 50,000 tons of grapes per year which are turned into some 24 million bottles. The September grape harvest along the coast is a great chance to get to know the vineyards, the cellars and, especially, the great wines.

Sveglia: state pensando alle Seychelles.

invite you to close your eyes and imagine a place where the tired spirit finds rest and all the worries fade away. A place that has space to breathe pure air, which has sand as soft as talcum powder to leave you breathless with wonder. Wake up: you are thinking of the Seychelles. The ancient archipelago is located in the blue and warm waters of the Indian Ocean and is composed of 115 granite and coral islands that still preserve the original ecosystem with unique plants and animals in the world. Formed 150 million years ago, they always have been a lucky isolation between India, Africa and Madagascar. Thanks to this they preserve untouched exotic nature and ancient forests, so spectacular to be considered in the past the true Eden Garden. A paradise that still nowadays is a natural reserve for almost 50% of the territory. There is a multi-lingual and multi-ethnic society (they speak French, Creole and English), used to the coexistence of different groups. A mostly Catholic society with a very low rate of crime and zero infectious diseases. The joy of living is the only possible contamination. Can be the awareness of living in a wonderful place that makes people smile spontaneously and greet the strangers just because they cross their way. The climate helps to fulfill the program: it’s always hot, with no peaks; the temperature rarely drops below 24°C or rises above 32°C. Apart from the islands on the far south, the

la terrazza dell’hotel The lowell. a sinistra: la high line, parco volante tra i palazzi A bedroom terrace at the Lowell Hotel; left, The High Line winds

where to be e provenienza, bambini pieni di tate, letture all’ombra di alberi immensi, fotografi naturalisti, signore in tailleur e sneaker dopo lavoro, lezioni di falconeria, concerti.... La seconda notte, ci si trasferisce al The Lowell (LHW. com/lowellnyc), chicchissimo affiliato di Leading Hotels of the World nell’Upper East Side.

rs u o h 48 ew York in N There is no doubt that two nights and just 20 hours are very few to get around New York City but if that’s all you have then you must make do. So by careful planning ahead of time you can organise a dense programme, making the most of every moment, even the logistics (often getting around is time-consuming). Let’s start by choosing the areas: Chelsea, Ground Zero, Upper East Side & Fifth Avenue including the Museum Mile. And there are also a few extra suggestions in case you can stay a day longer. Hotels Two addresses that will allow you to experience two completely different moods, both typical of New York. Stay the first night at the Standard (standardhotels.com). Built straddling the High Line (see below) this hallmark of contemporary hospitality is located in the most vibrant section of town. Complete with hopping design and easy atmosphere, it boasts bedrooms with wide skyline views. For the second night we suggest you stay on the Upper East Side in The Lowell (www.LHW.com/lowellnyc), a very chic affiliate of the Leading Hotels of the World. Again, a fantastic location, 63rd St. between Park and Fifth Avenue, but this time with a boutique size: 74 bedrooms of which 14 have a terrace and 33 have a fireplace. Enjoy delicious breakfasts with fresh pancakes served in an exquisite dining area. This is an ideal venue for those in search of afternoon tea, dinner before theatre (5-7 pm), or weekend brunch. Room 13D, for instance, was renovated by White House interior decorator Michael Smith. It is also the perfect address for rolling out of bed and into Barney’s (http://www.barney’s.com), one of the most fashionable stores in New York and the world. What to Do – in this Precise Order Visit the art gallery district in Chelsea (chelseagallerymap.com) along the Hudson River: between 21st and 26th streets and between 10th and 11th Avenues there are some 350 art galleries including great names like Gagosian and Lehman Maupin or Metro Picture for photography... inaugurations are held Thursdays. The High Line (www.thehighline.org) rises among the red brick and graffiti walls of the Meatpacking District and the Gallery area of Chelsea – between Gansevoort and 30th Streets. The old urban railway made headlines thanks to the extraordinary renovation in 2009 that made it into a walkway with flowerbeds, trees, fountains, sculptures and kiosks overlooking the Hudson and the early 20th century quarters of the city. Here people jog, walk, roller-blade or skateboard. The third section of the High Line project bordering on Hell’s Kitchen will be inaugurated next fall. Around it will be built the new fashion area, Hudson Yards (hudsonyardsnewyork.

2. Fare shopping nel Lower East Side. 3. Trascorrere una giornata a Williamsburg, Brooklyn. 4. Cenare da Gato (gatonyc.com), Red Farm (redfarmnyc. com) e Antonucci Cafe (antonuccicafe.com), ABC Kitchen (abchome.com). com), another immense project begun in 2013 with expected completion in 2018. Next stop Museum Mile, that mile-long stretch of Fifth Avenue that has a great density of museums. Too many to visit in an afternoon, you’ll have to choose between the Metropolitan (metmuseum. org, where in two hours at most you can see one temporary show and two rooms of the permanent collection). Before you leave, climb up to the roof terrace, where you’ll be surprised to find a beautiful garden with a real lawn, benches, hedges, art installations (by Dan Graham with Gunther Vogt, until November 2) and a marvelous view of Central Park and the skyline. This fall a new square with trees and fountains will be inaugurated in front of the Museum’s main entrance, the David H. Koch Plaza. Even if it is only for a selfie and an Instagram post, stop by the Guggenheim (guggenheim.org) along the same tract of the Fifth Avenue Museum Mile. It took Frank Lloyd Wright 16 years to design and build his architectural masterpiece. Opened to the public in 1959, the modern art museum follows a spiral path that leads from the ground to the top floor. Although some have called it a cupcake just out of the oven, it is considered one of Manhattan’s most important symbols. The Big Apple would be nothing without Central Park (www. centralparknyc.org). You find an entrance every hundred yards along Fifth Avenue. No matter where you enter you’ll find a slice of New York life: sport & fitness, dog sitters dragged along by taut leashes, people of all kinds and from all countries, children with governesses, people reading in the shade of giant trees, nature photographers, women in business suits and sneakers after work, falconry lessons, concerts.... A walk here is more restorative than a hike in the woods but is also more instructive than any treatise on sociology!

Let’s brush away any misunderstanding: we aren’t suggesting Sirio (siriony.com) for anyone homesick for pasta asciutta. Certainly it’s an Italian restaurant but it is also one of the most famous on Fifth Avenue. Although the chef and staff were born and raised in Italy, the flavours here are American. Maybe it’s the ingredients, maybe its the décor by Adam T. Tihany, one of the city’s most famous interior decorators, but the atmosphere is strictly Upper East Side. Take your time: a couple of hours go by between the amuse bouche and the tiramisu. After dinner, continue walking down Fifth Avenue for several blocks until you reach the Apple Store open 24/7: after dinner you won’t find the crowds that overflow during daytime business hours. It’s at most a ten-minute walk from the Lowell Hotel to 432 Park Avenue (432parkavenue.com). Here you’ll find a construction site in progress where, in one year’s time, the highest residential building in New York – indeed in the Western hemisphere – will be erected: 96 stories and 104 apartments including 10 lofts. Designed as an extra-luxury resort, one floor will be reserved for a restaurant, another for the spa and for the infinity swimming pool, still another for the gym, children’s playroom, cinema, concert hall, billiard room, etc.... You can reach Lower Manhattan by subway or taxi in about 30-45 minutes one way, to get to Ground Zero at the foot of the new World Trade Center (the skyscraper height recalls the date of American Independence: 1776 feet or 541 meters tall). You’ll find yourself walking among cranes, jack-hammers, workmen and the roar of the ongoing colossal work; impossible to imagine its ending in time or in height. Then suddenly all sound stops at the gutted foundations of the Twin Towers, today transformed into two enormous pools with the names of the 2983 victims. The line to get into the 9/11 Memorial & Museum (911memorial.org) is very long and has been every day since it first opened to the public last May 21. Two hours are the minimum needed to view the wreckage, photos, objects, documentaries, and photos of those killed in the September 11 attacks. You can follow the reconstruction of the day’s events, minute by minute; by downloading the App 9/11 you can follow the museum itinerary listening to Robert De Niro tell and explain what happened. That day he witnessed the events from the window of his home. Dinner at Club 21 (www.21club.com), one of New York’s historical nightclubs which even continued to serve alcohol during Prohibition in its Secret Wine Cellar; nowadays that locale can be reserved for private use. Its walls are crowded with publicity posters and memorabilia and toys hang from the ceiling. The Club does a busy turnover so make sure you reserve well ahead of time (a month before is ideal). Opening Soon (for those who can stay an extra 24 hours in town) On October 5th attend the inauguration of the Sculpture Center extension in Long Island City or, in December, be among the first to visit the New Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum (cooper-hewitt.org/new-experience). Instead to see the art and ideas being created today, visit the New Museum (newmuseum. org) in the East Village.

hey call it the “jewel of the Lesser Antilles”: Antigua fits perfectly this precious guise. A former British colony, visited by an international elite, the island is dotted with 365 beaches so, as the locals say, “one for every day of the year”. At first glance is spectacular, the typical postcard: white sands and blue sea, palm trees
in the wind and dazzling colors of orchids and hibiscus. On the south coast of this paradise on earth, there is an exclusive estate, The Inn at English Harbour, a recently renovated charming resort. The 28 rooms are divided between the colonial style beach cottages and suites in two floor villas spread over twenty hectares
of pine forest overlooking the English Harbour. The suites are all extra-luxurious with colonial furniture and sea view. The ones on the ground floor overlook a large veranda, while those on the first floor have a large terrace and vaulted ceilings. cane furniture and have a magnificent view that embraces Monserrat. The Terrace Restaurant, with an adjoining cellar and the Stone Bar, are in the middle of the resort, surrounded by a lush garden. The restaurant The Reef, more casual, is on the beach near the private harbour. It is worth to spend more than few words regarding the food, a topic that not only Italians love. In the elegant terrace, great for
candlelight dinners, the service and the mise en table are impeccable. The chef’s creations enrich the international cuisine with local dishes paired with great wines. On the other hand at The Reef you have breakfast aiming at a simple but refined menu prepared with very fresh ingredients and Caribbean beverages. Spa, infinity pool, tennis courts, water sports (including deep-sea fishing), library, tea room,
private beach, white sand and of course the boutique fulfill the resort. At night life turns on, like the lights sparkling on the water. In few minutes by boat you can reach the English Harbour, full of cool places and beautiful people, and wait the dawn watching the sun rising. But if the Inn at English Harbour is perfect for a dream holiday, it becomes very exclusive for a wedding or a honeymoon to the Caribbean.

Inside a ship rom my grandfather, I learned the love of boats and to respect the sea which gave us our living but could take our life away if not met with professionalism and a healthy dose of courage. During this trip I thought, therefore, to explain how a yacht is made, almost a fantasy, this incredible result of human ingenuity. Boats act in water just like the paper boats we built when we were kids: floating because of their shape. The immersed part, the «bottom», can give stupefying results, and the designers carefully study the hull’s profiles, to make it penetrate or plane the water, with as little resistance as

A virtual tour of the true interior of a ship to tell its story, the marvels of technology and design
possible. Now we enter the boat to look at how the bilges are structured: a perfectly shaped hull will need a network of structures which allows for stability in form and resistance. Keel, frame, longitudinal frame, and currents make up the ship’s skeleton, while the exterior plating is the skin, caressed by the water. In the bilges, on the sides and overhead, are a plethora of machinery, plumbing, wiring of every kind; metres of tubing which – like the complex system of arteries in our bodies. The wiring, a Yacht’s «nervous system», winds for kilometres of conducted ducts; its design
and the precision of its installation is essential for the construction’s long-term success. The positioning of the electricity panels and the «soundness» of the connections is an essential part of every project. The choice of the components must always be of high quality as, when you are at sea, electricity is vital and must arrive in each part of the vessel continuously. The electric current on board is produced primarily by generators which, by means of a thermic engine (usually a combustion engine) make it possible for the electric motor
its coupled with to create the energy the boat requires: electric pumps, lights, electronic equipment, as well as systems designed for comfort. The engine room is the heart of any motor boat and is the second place where an expert technician will go to get a sense of the vessel’s health. It is important to have a good engine, right for the requested purpose. All combustion engines need air; marine engines are no exceptions, so proper ventilation is very important. The engine room must always have good ventilation both so that the engine operates with top efficiency and so that the room temperature does not get too high, damaging the other equipment. Engine cool down is not done only by air, but also the sea does her part. Leaving the technical rooms, we are now ready to explore the interior. At first glance, it is easy to think that these areas simply need to be decorative, nice to look at; the reality is that even these areas do their part in a complex plan linking comfort to safety. If we just think of the weight of the furnishings and of the superstructures, which influence the boat’s oscillatory movement (rolling), the study of the distribution of weight is an important part of the calculations which go into the project. At the same time, necessary changes of the furnishings of a boat can influence its performance at sea. A simple but efficient and intuitive example, is that of the swimming pool, which is frequently installed on the highest deck, perfect for sunbathing. The hidden reality is this can be dangerous, because that small pool can contain thousands of litres of water, comparable to a cement block placed on top of a pole, the base of which, in turn, is fixed at the boat’s center of gravity. The taller the pole, the more important the weight becomes, because the oscillation range increases (the weight turns into metric tons). Installing anything heavy on the higher decks, therefore, causes a higher level of oscillation which, in turns, reduces comfort; excess oscillation can also be disastrous …And here our virtual tour into the inner-workings of a Yacht ends. I hope this brief tour has stimulated the curiosity of those who were unaware of the complex, fascinating heart of these amazing floating works of art.

ravelling around the world is a dream of many. For all who work in the tourism industry is a lifestyle, a mission. Definitely not a job for everyone, because it requires everyday sacrifices that are rewarded only by the passion and satisfaction to help people discover the world by creating special itineraries, finding interesting destinations able to inspire wonder. To do this we, tour operators, have to go in mission of reconnaissance, experience the locations and the resorts, see if they are suitable to our idea of travel and to those who choose to travel with us. This year I went to Turkey with the intention of finding new hotels and resorts for our clients. Turkey, you know, is a large country with a rich cultural heritage and an inestimable artistic patrimony, proof of ancient civilizations’ passage, Greeks and Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. There is also an extraordinary nature, untouched, beautiful, from the coast to the Anatolian plateau. Al lot of everything. Since it is impossible to see all at once, I chose two locations that well represent charm and hospitality: Istanbul and Bodrum.

Istanbul is the symbol of Turkey’s soul: it is divided into two, on one bank the east side of the city, on the other the European metropolis. The list of monuments is long: Sultanahmet with the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern, the Grand Bazaar where you can get lost among exotic goods, the Galata Tower where you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views in the world, especially at sunset. In Istanbul I was guest at Shangri-La hotel, where, inter alia, I had a committees’ meeting for Traveller Made, the new European network of luxury travel agencies. The Shangri-La is unique for its style. Overlooking the Bosphorus, it was built from a former tobacco factory dated 1930. 186 magnificent bedrooms and two restaurants, Ist Too, with turkish/fusion cuisine, and the Shang Palace, whose Asian specialties are among the most tasty I have ever tried. The Shangri-La is located in a perfect position to explore the city: the Besiktas ferry terminal is just in front of the entrance. Across the strait you arrive to the eastern
districts of Kadikoy and Uskudar. The nightlife and hustle of Taksim and Istiklal Street are ten minute ride away, and the same Besiktas, where the hotel is located, has plenty of nice places for fine dining and where to spend pleasant evenings. While in Istanbul, Peter French, President of Raffles Hotels, invited me to a private visit of the brand new hotel before the opening happened last September 1st. Virtuous architecture, refined interiors, haute cuisine, in a word: deep luxury. The hotel overlooks the Bosphorus, Princes Islands and the historical peninsula. A unique viewpoint on the most fascinating glimpse of town. It is located in the center Zorlu, a kind of bazaar where contemporary fashion, good food and arts converge on the Besiktas European side. In the emerging Turkey, a rising star of the global economy, the Raffles hotel represents the contemporary, vibrant, full of energy innovative Istanbul, yet always in harmony with its heritage and historic atmosphere. After Istanbul, I went to Bodrum. The ancient Halicarnassus is today the Saint Tropez of Turkey, with a peace that the latter is missing. I stayed at the renowned Amanruya, located in a bay of peace and beauty. As in every Aman Resort, I enjoyed the infinite delicacy and the many touches that are always reserved to the guests, in a place that inspires

peace and serenity. The next stop was at the Mandarin Oriental, opened just few months ago. Located on the northern coast of Bodrum peninsula at Cennet Koyu (Paradise Bay), twenty minute drive from the city center, this hotel is a mix of style, luxury and comfort: two private beaches, several gourmet restaurant, a unique Spa, suites and villas with contemporary design. With regard to services, well, I found them legendary. I ended up my stay in Bodrum at the Macakizi, a very chic place with a magnificent panoramic terrace, where I ordered a delicious lunch and had the time to finish writing my travel notes. The music in the background kidnapped me; I was literally immersed in another world. And for a moment I forgot that my journey was unfortunately ending there.

A house, or better still a private castle, where you can spend a “self-catering” holiday fit for a king not far from the sea beaches at Grado. Located between the Tagliamento and the Isonzo rivers, near the resurgences in the green Friuli plain, it’s hard to choose between the village’s three ancient, but perfectly equipped, homes: La Vicinia, Casa Artulco and Casa Rambaldo. The first, measuring 140 sq yds on two stories, is perfect for four people. Once the ancient castle’s administrative and judiciary centre, this beautiful stone house with old terracotta floors and wood-beamed ceilings has a portico with arches running down one side of the garden. Restored a couple of years ago Casa Artulco was one of the two buildings once used to house men-at-arms in Medieval times. Smaller in size (73 sq yds on one story) it is perfect for a couple on holiday. Antique furnishings, terracotta flooring, and wooden ceiling beams create a romantic atmosphere that carries over into the private garden which provides access to the castle’s park. Lastly, Casa Rambaldo was the other housing for the armed guards of yore: 82 sq yds on one floor plus a loft, is suitable for four people. Here, too, the furnishings are antique, the door opens onto the village and the garden . Private parking space. www.castellodistrassoldo.it

The Castle of Spessa, an historical residence in Gorizia’s Collio area, is surrounded by the lush greenery of a magnificent Italian-style garden. It is the heart of a large country resort that has a full-fledged winery, an 18-hole golf course among the vineyards, two restaurants and apartments mostly used by golfers. In this castle, the great lover Casanova spent his days in society conversing, writing and listening to music, tasting those wines that he defined in his Memoirs as “of excellent quality”. To anyone wanting to spend a romantic weekend here we suggest the Apartment of the Count. This loft measuring 150 sq yds is located in the castle’s lower tower. The cosy atmosphere is furnished with modern and antique furniture that complement each other. Completely independent, it has a fully-equipped kitchen (any non-chefs can take advantage of B&B service), dining and living rooms, plus two delightful bedrooms under the eaves. The view is spectacular. www.castellodispessa.it
The 15th century country residence of Marquis Antinori has become one of the most beautiful Tuscan properties where you can spend a dream vacation. You will reach it by a drive lined with centuries-old cypress trees and when you reach the hilltop you will be overlooking all of Florence. The villa, now belonging to the Ferragamo family, is a typical example of Medici-period architecture that has been perfectly restored and outfitted with antique furniture, golden mirrors and crystal chandeliers. Enjoy the rustic fireplace in the kitchen as well as every modern comfort and five-star service. Immerse yourself in the property’s olive groves and magnificent gardens where, next to the oval swimming pool, there is an eating area with wrought iron table and chairs. Next to the villa the magnificent citrus fruit grove is arranged on an ample lawn enclosed by centuries-old trees and hedges; here, under the shade of a 300-year-old Lebanese cedar tree, ancient rose bushes thrive next to lemon trees planted in giant terracotta urns that are raised on carved limestone bases. www.lungarnocollection.com

You don’t need to travel far and wide to find where you can live in symbiosis with nature – you just need to get to Maremma on Tuscany’s southern coast. Here in a pure and lush countryside a protected wildlife reserve of over 2500 acres stretches along the Capalbio coast. Inside the area there are some twenty houses that have been expertly renovated. Our preference is the most romantic one, Burano, which recalls an English cottage, the only difference being that it is just a few yards from the sea which is easily reached on a footpath. The more aloof guests will prefer the private beach with hut and chaise longue while those in search of company will opt for La Dogana beach establishment just over a mile from the estate. The complex, surrounded by a large garden, is composed of a main building a former storage building and an annex. The first structure is three stories high with an ample living area on the ground floor. Upstairs there are four bedrooms with a bathroom and, on the top floor, there is a room, bathroom and changing room. Furnished in good taste and complete with every comfort, including hired help, this country house is a place where you’ll enjoy hours of total relaxation in a wild and unspoiled natural environment. It’s hard to believe that the delightful village of Capalbio is just around the corner and the popular venue of the Argentario promontory, famous for its small bays for swimming, is just a short drive away. www.sacra.it

here to go this fall? Chiara Dragoni, Senior Experience Designer with Onirikos since 2002, is answering us. Chiara was introduced to the passion for travelling by her family, her love for art, architecture and music has nourished throughout the years her desire for exploring and discovering new horizons. She’s now willing to share the same passion both with her children and through her job. “When I start planning a journey I feel the same excitement of an artist in front of a blank canvas: I like to dive into the experience and I imagine myself living it step by step, looking for true perfection in every single detail.” “This autumn I recommend you the Seychelles, an evergreen. They are romantic islands for a couple holiday and they are great also for a family vacation: here land and sea are a natural adventures’ park. Another perfect destination for the season is Marrakech: it is close (three hour flight), there is a wonderful climate and it is always fascinating. If you are in Paris for business, stay and organize your meeting at the Peninsula Paris, the ultimate in excellence. In a couple of months we will be back on the ski slopes. The most chic spot? without doubts Megève. If you love the exotic beaches, choose Antigua. In October is starting the best season to land in the Caribbean. Finally, I remind you that Christmas is arriving fast and it is already time to think about the next holiday. The earlier you start the better, especially to be able to guarantee you the room you want in the resort you like the best. Oh, do not forget: I hope to meet you in person in Abu Dhabi during our Travel Private Member’s Lounge Fall Experience at the St. Regis Saadiyat, from October 26th to November 1st.”
