TOUR DES VOYAGES PANORAMIC MURALS Curiosity and a sense of adventure prompted merchants and travellers to venture into unfamiliar lands on the ancient trade routes. The map of the world was crossed by the itineraries of trade in spices, incense, amber, silk and tea. These are the leitmotifs of this collection that take us back to the famous reports of Marco Polo and Matteo Ricci. Inspired by encounters with faraway peoples, objects and places Tour des Voyages, composed of five different panoramas, turns any space, living area or bedroom into a genuine chamber of wonders.

G

entle autumn arouses a desire to travel. It’s the best season to visit Italy’s cities of art, from north to south, and smaller cities that host great cultural and artistic events.

We go to Tuscany for a Spa in a castle, Puglia for an aristocratic country resort and Sorrento for a romantic seafront dinner. Then we head north to the Collio Goriziano and the table of a hugely talented Michelin-starred chef and a virtual tour of the terroirs of the great wines and more, providing an exciting report on this fascinating subject. Then a visit to observe changing trends in the design industry and to the fashion world to discover new styles, ending with a hunt for unique jewels. Have a good trip!

lways considered a somewhat bold choice,

perhaps because we often associate it with sexy and tight-fitting garments, leather is actually a very elegant material, capable of creating a unique look and adding character: the catwalk queen of the next few months will be leather. From bikerstyle jackets to dusters left open like a robe or worn with a belt like a classic trench, and from super-light capes to the total leather look blouse and slacks. As for accessories, leather is obviously irreplaceable and a classic option for the cooler seasons. The big bets for this season will be on the colour, from the brightest hues to classic dark brown, from solid colours to the most imaginative combinations. In short, the trend is towards leather for every occasion; a material no longer associated solely with super-sexy garments, but one that is 100% wearable, soft even, to be worn light and loose, day and night depending on the colour and shade 42

After opening a gallery and shop on Via Santa Marta 8/B and taking part in the Fuorisalone 2019, the Bifi Italia boutique is now an important destination for all collectors of art, design and the magnificent Ardmore pieces, now finally available in Italy. unique mix of originality, manufacturing excellence and tradition - Bvlgari is a perfect example of Italian skills and flair, combining technique and beauty, passion and talent. This story has inspired an exhibition entitled “Bvlgari, the story, the dream”, an initiative

organised by the Polo Museale in Lazio in collaboration with Bvlgari. The exhibition is hosted by two of Rome’s prestigious historic buildings, Palazzo Venezia and Castel Sant’Angelo.Through family anecdotes, commercial strategies and creative inspiration the show depicts the main events in the brand’s story from its foundation to the early 1990s, displaying examples of the brand’s jewellery and objects from private collections. An icon of old-school Italian jewellery-making, Bvlgari has successfully re-invented itself several times, while remaining faithful to the style that still makes the brand unique and unmistakable. The concept behind the exhibition is that of the passage of time – installations with arches and stairways become a setting for a presentation where the mannequins are spectators and protagonists. Seventy-five figures with an iconic, distinctive profile stand expressionless within magnificent monumental spaces – they are the silhouettes of the Schläppi 2200 collection that has made Bonaveri mannequins such an indispensable product. Jewellery from the Heritage Collection, with some items on show for the first time, is joined by creations from exclusive private collections in a narrative path enriched by previously unseen archive documents, period photos and films. Haute couture garments from the Cecilia Matteucci Lavarini collection provide vivid illustrations of different periods, trends and historic tastes from the Bvlgari story. Starting from the creation of the brand, founded by Sotirio Bulgari (a silversmith from Greece who in 1884 came to Rome to seek his fortune), “Bvlgari, the story, the dream” covers almost a century of the brand’s history, interweaving it with economic, social and fashion events, also documenting it through the success of the brand’s wealthy celebrity clients. The jewellery worn by the divas of the “Dolce Vita” reflect the international fame achieved by the brand after the Second World War,

a period of rebirth for Rome and Italy as a whole. Highlighting and celebrating the distinctive features of Bvlgari’s designs, the exhibition displays some of the brand’s most emblematic creations – pieces of jewellery that embody the manufacturing excellence, taste in colours, sumptuous sizes and soft lines that are so typical of the brand. The array of most familiar and well-loved icons includes gold jewels made from ancient coins, reflecting the brand’s ability to give a contemporary twist to past traditions. In their turn the modular creations from the 1980s and 1990s, perfect for every occasion, are a response to women’s needs. (Ph.CourtesyBvlgari)

with multiple elements that hang, swing and create a unique and super-feminine play of light and movement. It was the French, who, in the 18th century, conferred their luxury status on these items of jewellery. First seen in the Middle East and India hundreds of years earlier, diamonds and precious stones were later added to the earrings. Today, they have evolved, with varying lengths, stones of greater or lesser value and some fashioned solely in metal. Whatever their exact features, Chandelier earrings always retain their unique style: they are gloriously eccentric. So, feel free to sport pendant Chandelier earrings – even down to the shoulders – on all occasions. A shorter design works best with heart and diamond-shaped faces, while longer Chandeliers suit an oval face. Similarly, for petite women, avoid excessively long earrings, while taller wearers can opt for the full shoulder-skimming length.

veryone knows and loves the pizza, but not many are aware that besides the Neapolitan pizza, one of the most famous local versions that is widely consumed in Italy and across the world comes from the region around the pleasant little town of Tramonti, in the heart of the Lattari mountains. This

story has a timeless fascination – the first records of this speciality in the verdant Amalfi Coast area date back to the Middle Ages, when the local people would prepare “panelle”, fritters made from rye, millet and barley flour. They were eaten freshly-baked, flavoured with spices, herbs and fat. The new “Associazione Pizza Tramonti” has been created to protect and promote the Pizza De. Co. (Denominazione Comunale)

n exhibition dedicated to a pair of artists, father and daughter, over twenty years after the father’s death. This artistic and human partnership, founded on the esteem the father had for his daughter

and her admiration for her mentor, led them to work and experiment in art from 1976 to 1997 in the large spaces of a former spinning mill in Canzo, Brianza, studying painting studies and holding ceramics, silk screening and lithograph workshops. The exhibition provides an opportunity to discover the affinities and differences between these two artists. Only once before have they shown their works at the same exhibition, in 1990, choosing to paint on the same base, a mirror. In this show the common element is the starting point for the works – the use of materials different from canvas, a stimulating choice for their creativity, with both artists confronting compositional problems and new materials in a constant challenge to themselves. The paintings show that even when taking the same pictorial material as a starting point they can obtain entirely different results. Salvatore Fiume’s works selected for this show belong to a productive arc stretching from 1964 to 1996, and were all created on a range of materials, including wallpaper and fabrics. These materials made an appearance in Fiume’s work on his return from a stay in London in the 1960s. Here he was inspired by the innovative, anti-conformist clothing of the counter-culture youth and the atmosphere of what was described as “Swinging London”. His painting, less austere and much more liberal and exuberant than before, communicated the yearning for freedom that had developed at this time among

the members of the new generations. His works in the Ciclo Londinese became a fundamental part of the story of this period and some of them are on display here. The works on show by Laura Fiume were all completed after her father’s death, especially between 2002 and 2019. They are a homage to the design world Laura is a part of through her original ceramic works, interior furnishings and numerous collaborations in the 1990’s with prestigious brands. The works on display are a homage to three great architects - Paola Navone, Gio Ponti and Philippe Starck. Gio Ponti was a very important figure in the life of Salvatore Fiume and his family, as it was he who commissioned the paintings for the transatlantic liners Giulio Cesare and Andrea Doria in the 1950s. Laura has dedicated five pieces to the great architect for this exhibition, drawing inspiration from the elements of his work that have had the greatest effect on her.

THE TAHITIAN JOURNAL Paul Gauguin’s South Seas diary in Barolo

Valeria Rastrelli

The exhibition includes over 50 works, including the 21 woodcuts specially made to illustrate the first Polynesian Diary and printed by his friend Daniel de Monfreid

U

ntil 3 November, the Aula Picta in Barolo, the city of the famous wine, hosts one of the most interesting exhibitions of Gauguin’s works, “Gauguin and the Noa Noa

Diary”, curated by Vincenzo Sanfo. The exhibition centres around the 21 woodcut prints specially created by Gauguin to illustrate his first Polynesian diary and printed by his friend Daniel de Monfreid. The works on display embrace the wild, primitive shamanic world that made such a deep impression on Gauguin’s work. The magical woodcuts will be joined by two extraordinary sculptural works, a terracotta piece called “Hina et Tifatou” or “Vase aux Quatre Dieux”, one example of which is held by the Musée d’Orsay and was recently shown at the MoMA in New York. In Barolo it will be exhibited alongside a bronze entitled “Tii à la coquille” or “Idole à la coquille” from the wood carving in 1986 and also held at the Musée D’Orsay in Paris. The works on display include an extraordinary drawing, “Study of Arms”, rescued from the burning of his possessions ordered by the authorities after his death. The double-sided drawing, “Study of Arms and Hands”, on show here with its monotype, complete this superb exhibition, which will also display twenty or so lithographs printed in 1914 to illustrate “Avant et Après”, the confessional book written by Gauguin and completed in 1903, a few days before his death. Documents, photos and books, including the first edition of Noa Noa published in “La Revue Blanche” in 1897, complete a cultured, engaging, refined exhibition that reflects the quality of the noble wine that gives its name to this lovely town, the pearl of the Langhe region.

BOTERO’S TOUCH Bologna celebrates the Colombian artist Fernando Botero with an extensive show in the evocative rooms of the Palazzo Pallavicini

F

from 12 October 2019 to 12 January 2020 an extensive show celebrates the Colombian artist. The exhibition is divided into seven sections, and

reflects the themes closest to Botero’s heart, as he expresses a view of the world seen through the prism of his poetic sensibility, creating a beauty made up of abundant volumes, embracing colours and original iconography. It is a visionary hymn to existence that adds greater depth to the idea of drawing as a basis of form, a primary, indispensable instrument of beauty. The subjects include figures linked to bullfighting and the circus, silent and balanced still lifes, dedicated nudes, religious characters, individuals depicted in their everyday existence – a visual collection that reflects Botero’s intense visual research, carried out to affirm his distinctive language. The works on display conceal the secrets of life, hidden beneath the presence of corpulent volumes, people or objects awaiting a random or voluntary movement. In perfect equilibrium between irony and nostalgia, dreamlike settings and fairy-tale realities, Italian classicism and South American culture, Botero’s art is both the creator and bearer of a figurative, personal style that draws in and enchants the viewer. palazzopallavicini.com

LA MADONNA LITTA. LEONARDO AND HIS PUPILS An extremely important exhibition at Milan’s Poldi Pezzoli museum, where the famous painting from the Hermitage, one of the Russian museum’s greatest masterpieces, will be on show for the first time in thirty years. The Madonna Litta will be joined by a carefully-selected nucleus of works – twenty or so refined paintings and drawings – drawn from public and private collections around the world, created by Leonardo and his closest pupils, from Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio to Marco d’Oggiono, the still mysterious maestro of the Pala Sforzesca and Francesco Napoletano, in the final two decades of the 15th century, when the great master was living and working in Milan at the court of Ludovico il Moro. museopoldipezzoli.it

T

he Cathedral of Parma has a twin church nearby. The Gothic structure of San Francesco del Prato, in fact, matches the city’s famous

cathedral. Within its nave, chapels and most hidden corners, San Francesco holds a rich and illustrious history. It was originally a place of worship but from the Napoleonic era and almost to the present day, the building was used as a prison. Starting from September 2019 and continuing for most of 2020, once the restoration work on the external façade has been completed, guided tours will allow visitors to get up close and admire the marvel that is the rose window of San Francesco, with its 16 rays wrought in richly decorated polychrome panels. From this lofty vantage point, visitors can enjoy a spectacular view of the city’s historic centre and admire the staggering beauty of the Cathedral and skyline of Parma. Using custom-built scaffolding that will be equipped with a lift, visitors will be able to climb up to a height of 20 metres and progress along a special walkway that allows the artistic and architectural heritage of the building to be observed, returning to the ground by means of a ladder. An unforgettable experience, both enchanting and moving, the tour will be limited to groups of 10 people at a time.
