e want to greet the new year with an issue that’s packed with good things. First, a feature on designer homes created by stylists, then we visit
Stefano Boeri’s Vertical Forests, taking in the Palazzo Barovier&Toso on Murano. Next, we take a quick look at the season’s fashions, sumptuous and heavy with decoration, accompanied by glittering jewellery. On the subject of food, we describe the fine food and wine to be had “inside and outside the walls” of Milan and put a few questions to a talented young chef working at Lake Garda. We also take in tables set with silver and porcelain, pop wineries and the Grand Wine Tour with excellent wines and hospitable winemakers. Then there’s the snow, of course, and a series of destinations and hotels where visitors can enjoy great skiing and even better accommodation. Finally, a couple of luxury suggestions – a stay in a castle in the Chianti region and another in an Art hotel in Valpolicella. We wish you a 2019 that’s full of excellent Italian stories. BULGARI IN MILAN’S “QUADRILATERO” FASHION DISTRICT Bulgari is reopening its boutique at via Montenapoleone 2 after a meticulous renovation that reflects the aesthetics developed by architect Peter Marino – a combination of innovation, transgression and tradition that forms the basis of the New Yorker’s eclectic, attractive style. While Peter Marino chose to open a “Door onto Rome” for the Bulgari New York store in the heart of Manhattan, here it’s a homage to Milanese design, from Gio Ponti to Piero Portaluppi. White Travertine marble worked with a geometrical motif, Breccia di Serravezza marble cut to emphasise its veining, the characteristic eight-pointed star in red porphyry inlaid into the floor – these are the materials Peter Marino uses to express a sober exuberance that is typically Milanese, reflecting the stylistic theme that links all the Bulgari boutiques around the world. bulgari.com

Laid out over six floors, the 800 square metre space will be the brand’s largest Asian store, offering a complete range of men’s and women’s wear collections, ready-to-wear, bags, small leatherware, objects for the home and furniture. The new store is an elegant structure inspired by the Japanese city’s futuristic style and Modernist architecture. Its facade reproduces the iconic interwoven motif created with over 900 square silver panels with a moondust finish. The solid front seems to dissolve to make room for the windows and main entrance. The lower floor is for leather goods and men’s shoes, with women’s leather goods and eyewear on the ground floor. The first floor hosts a lounge with women’s shoes and a space dedicated to precious leather bags and the personalisation services. The second floor is women’s ready-to-wear and shoes, with men’s clothing and select styles on the third. The fourth floor is reserved for private appointments. bottegaveneta.com

news FORNASETTI GREETS 2019 The image on the 52nd edition of the now-famous Piatto Calendar shows keys raining down from a cloudy sky. For 2019 Fornasetti has chosen a symbolic landscape, a good omen of freedom and openness. The hope is that in 2019 it will rain keys to open doors and open up new horizons. For thirty years Barnaba Fornasetti has created the decorations for this limited edition, making a different plate every year at the approach of Christmas. The tradition dates back to the 1940s when her father Piero Fornasetti and Gio Ponti launched the Annuari (Yearbooks), twelve tablets bound to form a calendar given to friends and cherished clients as a Christmas present. Years later, in 1968, Piero took up the idea once again and began producing a new series of plates, also meant for friends and clients. The result was the Piatto Calendario (Calendar Plate), which soon became a cult object for collectors. fornasetti.com

WONDERLFUL ITALY Creating value for the surrounding region, contributing to the growth of tourist destinations where there is still room for development, focussing on the creation of a network of small local entrepreneurs to provide integrated hospitality services. These are the ambitious objectives of Wonderful Italy, a tourism startup launched in 2017 from an idea by Oltre Venture, the first Italian Impact Investing fund. The fund invests in businesses that have a significant impact on the community in terms of capital, management skills and social know-how – Wonderful Italy offers its guests stays in selected homes, and authentic tourist experiences in contact with the local community. It operates throughout the country through a network of local enterprises called Hubs. The first local Hub was launched last summer in western Sicily, starting with Palermo. Last November saw the opening of the Puglia Centrale Hub based on Ostuni, the Brindisi area and the Valle D’Itria, and recently the eastern Sicily Hub was created, stretching from Syracuse towards Ragusa across the whole of eastern Sicily. The aim is to create at least fifteen Hubs across Italy, and a further two Hubs are scheduled by the end of 2019 in central and northern Italy. wonderfulitaly.eu

t warms the heart to look up and see a living, breathing that breathes and inspires us to breathe, too, changing colour with the turning of the seasons, on the two towers of the Isola Quarter in Milan. Seeing their metamorphosis over the last few years has been a wonderful
experience. Beside the buildings of glass and mirrors with their plumes and spirals providing a glimpse of the cities of the future stands the Bosco (Wood) by Boeri Studio (Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca and Giovanni La Varra). The internationally-renowned starchitect has built in his – and my – city “The most beautiful skyscraper in the world”, a pilot project for a new generation of eco-sustainable structures. Everyone envies us this metropolitan green area of 800 trees (each 3, 6 or 9 metres high), 4,500 bushes, 15,000 plants and a huge variety of flowering plants and shrubs, distributed according to the orientation of the façades towards the sun. The trees hosted by each Vertical Wood would cover an area of 20,000 square metres down on the ground. The plant system of the Vertical Woods helps create a special microclimate, generating humidity and oxygen and absorbing CO2 and particulates. All in all, an architectural miracle created with the future in mind. The original idea is down to Boeri’s journey to Dubai, the city of mirrored towers, made of metal, glass and ceramics. His idea for a skyscraper clad in vegetation developed as he found himself surrounded by buildings whose facades are almost entirely made of glass. “In metaphorical and conceptual terms the Vertical Wood can be compared to a tall tree – the balconies are the branches, the plants are its leaves, the building’s central body is
W O N D E R W O R L D 29
design icon the trunk and the hydraulic watering systems are the roots”, wrote Boeri in “A Vertical Wood: an instruction manual for a forest city prototype”, published in 2015. After Milan will come Lausanne with its Tour des Cedres 117 metres with 100 trees and four species of cedar. Nothing is lacking in its interiors – apartments, gym, shopping centre, offices and restaurants. Asia, too, has fallen for Boeri. The first example of a vertical wood in Nanjing will comprise two towers along the lines of the Milan complex. The first is 200 metres tall, and will host offices, a museum and a club, while the second, 108 metres tall, will include a 247-room hotel, penthouse pool and conference centre at its base. After this it’s the turn of the Vertical Forest of Utrecht. The 90-metre Hawthorn Tower Torre will be home to 360 trees and 9,640 bushes and plants. On the sixth floor is the Vertical Forest Hub, forestation archive, that will encourage an exchange of ideas on the subject. Work will begin in 2019, with completion scheduled for 2022. The Parisian version of the wood will be called Forêt Blanche, and will stand in Villiers sur Marne. The concept here is different, as the tower will be 54 metres tall and be built of wood. The most ambitious project, though, has recently been approved in China – not a building but an entire forested city with schools and hospitals, laid out along the Liujiang river and enjoying rail connections to Liuzhou. Work is due to start in 2020 and will be completed in a very short time.

Sweaters are back, for the hearth, home and winter, warming the heart along with a hot tisane and a roaring fire. But that’s not all – while it’s true that its purpose is to keep us warm, pullovers can now complete a whole range of looks, from a gypsy dress to a maxi-skirt with cowboy boots, skinny pants with ballet flats or a sexy tight skirt that immediately becomes less in-your-face with the addition of a baggy pullover skilfully knitted by granny, or a thin, ultralight and minimal crewneck. 5 questions to... Andrea Pompilio Cosmopolitan attitude Alessandro Ieva
B
orn in Pesaro in 1973, he is one of Italian fashion’s creative talents it’s worth keeping a close eye on. After learning his art at important fashion houses
like Prada, Calvin Klein and Yves Saint Laurent, to name but a few, in 2010 he launched the strictly Italian-made brand that bears his name. His free, subversive fashion deconstructs and recreates the principles of men’s tailoring and way of dressing, combining silhouettes, styles, patterns, fabrics and far-away cultures without rules, making tasteful experimentation his watchword, a deeply Italian concept with a cosmopolitan attitude.
1
Who is Andrea Pompilio? It’s never easy to answer a question like that. I was born into a creative environment – an architect father and a mother passionate about painting, and they always encouraged me to express myself in the way I thought best. I’m a great observer who tries to notice all the details of life – I love watching people in the street, at airports and wherever I happen to find myself, because observation is the basis of the development of my collections, which are deeply inspired by what’s around me and strikes me in one way or another. I try not to take myself too seriously because I think lightness is the elixir of long life.
2
What does being a designer mean today? The word’s been blown up a bit, to such an extent that I can’t really give you an exact definition. Being a designer goes beyond the simple act of thinking up new garments. People who create must dream up clothes that inspire a good feeling in the people wearing them and who are seeking to find something that best expresses their personality. I think trends are obsolete now because everything can keep on being in fashion even six months after its launch on the market. Real designers know how to surprise themselves and are constantly reinventing themselves.
3
What advice would you give to emerging designers? I always advise them to be themselves, even if that means going against the flow. Having an individual aesthetic vision and

believing in your own ideas can be risky, but it’s always a winning strategy. The fashion world has changed completely on an international level, up-and-coming stylists will find themselves in an increasingly fast, competitive environment. The technology they have available means they can speak directly to their end clients with nobody inbetween, always bearing sustainability in mind – because we all have a responsibility and duty to protect the world we live in.
4
What’s your idea of luxury?? Luxury means exclusivity, and exclusivity doesn’t lie in the price, it depends on the product’s uniqueness. Owning clothes and objects that haven’t been produced in large quantities is an increasingly rare privilege. That’s why as well as the seasonal collections I create small capsule collections that can only be bought from my online shop AP SUPERMARKET (andreapompilio.it), which sells limited edition products. All this makes final consumers happy and excited because they’ve bought something that’s theirs alone, nobody else will have anything like it. .
5
Milan is your city, but what’s your relationship with the world? I moved to Milan when I’d just turned eighteen and I immediately fell in love with its discreet beauty. I like the courtesy, tolerance and elegance of the Milanese – with the work I do, I couldn’t live anywhere else. I have a fantastic relationship with the world and I’d like to keep on exploring it. I’ve lived in New York and Paris and I go to Japan more than six times a year, but Milan is where I really feel at home.

historic restaurant dating back to the 16th century roots nestling in the countryside a few kilometres outside Milan. It’s a place that appeals to the heart, immersed in nature and wrapped in the fascination of
history. La Rampina’s identity rests in the constant effort of the Gagliardi family, which for generations has looked after this rural jewel and the culinary offer prepared by papa Lino and his young son Luca. Their dishes embody a balance between the traditions of Milan, Lombardy, the surrounding region and refined innovations. In the early 1970s the Gagliardi brothers transformed the ancient hostelry into a famous restaurant to the south of Milan, and their dedication won the restaurant a series of accolades – the Milan Chamber of Commerce awarded them first prize as “The oldest local venue in the Province of Milan still in operation”. Here, the celebration of the traditions of the Lombardy region and other areas created by Lino Gagliardi is the perfect partner to the creative flair of the young chef Luca, his son, a pupil of Gualtiero Marchesi. The common features of this pairing are a careful research into raw materials, strictly seasonal and often zero-kilometre, and painstaking artisanal reinterpretations. The menu is inspired by fresh, attractive simplicity and authenticity that also encompass international tastes in meat, fish and vegetable dishes. The 16th-century cellar, one of the restaurant’s most evocative spaces, is home to over eight hundred red, white and rosé wines. Sommelier Lorenzo, Lino’s son, and Dario, the head of the family’s son-in-law, guide guests through the wine list, suggesting the most suitable partners for their choice of dishes. The hostelry also offers cookery courses for all the foodies who already know the restaurant or visitors who want to try their hand at the creating the chefs’ dishes. rampina.it

DINING IN THE FUTURIST QUARTER
T
hirty-five covers in the heart of Milan’s skyscraper district. Thirty-five is also the age of Franco Aliberti, the young, talented chef who has trained under some of the world’s
great culinary masters, from Alain Ducasse to Gualtiero Marchesi, Massimo Spigaroli, Massimiliano Alajmo and Massimo Bottura. In 2014 he opened his restaurant in Riccione, EVVIVA, serving zero-waste sweets and cooking, his stylistic calling card, before joining chef Gianni Tarabini at the Michelin-starred La Preséf di Mantello in Valtellina. Now he’s arrived at the Ai Tre Cristi. Only a few years, but enough to unleash an extremely personal, high-quality culinary talent that emphasis the individual raw materials, presented in different consistencies and using all the edible parts of fruit and vegetables in a pure “play of appearance” that tricks the eyes and mouth with sensory games. The chef has created two menus - “In Città” (“In the City”), eight courses celebrating the city of Milan, dedicated to the products and people that who have enriched and changed the city, and “A Due Passi da Milano” (Just outside Milan”), with ten courses reflecting the changing seasons and bringing together many small niche producers, displaying the ingredients and the distance from the city. His training as a pastry chef has led him to develop an approach that emphasises efficiency and organisation, but his innate curiosity and urge to experiment have found expression through quality produce and modern cookery methods, returning to the techniques of his forebears – like grilling - that go to shape a personal, highly-creative style. The cooking changes at Aliberti’s hands, along with the restaurant’s viewpoint, which directs attention to the ingredients, the dish, the table setting and design, offering an all-round experience. Dining here means joining in the game, its impact heightened by an innovative set of ceramic tableware and cutlery that provide a tactile journey that brings all the senses alive. trecristimilano.com

young man from Padova, but with a wealth of experience. Much of his life has been spent in the kitchen. He has worked
with Giancarlo Perbellini, and learnt some of his secrets. Simone is executive chef at the renovated EVO Bardolino restaurant in the Aqualux Hotel SPA Suite&Terme Bardolino (the restaurant owner is olive-oil company Viola of Bardolino, and EVO stands for Extra Virgin Olive Oil). As reserved as his restaurant, creative and substantial, he transforms every meal into a truly special experience, in a venue dedicated to gourmets eager to experience new tastes, and who like frank, straightforward dishes that express the chef’s personality.

Your teachers and inspiration I’ve had many teachers and I’ve chosen a range of experiences to give myself an all-round training. All of these, even the most modest and simple, has taught me something. In my first job, at the Filanda Palace hotel during the school holidays and at weekends, Fabio Mason showed me what doing this job really means and what it involves in terms of a spirit of sacrifice. Enzo Pittura at the Palazzo Carradori Hotel nurtured my awareness – he taught me the difference between being a good interpreter and having my own ideas, knowing how to develop and how to build the managerial and organisational skills you need for success. Finally, the experience at Giancarlo Perbellini, where Francesco Baldissarutti (his sous-chef at the time and now chef at the Perbellini restaurant in Isola Rizza) taught me the art of detail at every stage of creating a dish.
2
Region and season. How important are they in your cooking? They’re both an influence when I’m creating a dish or deciding what goes into it. Region and season are two fundamental factors in my work. For me, though, the region doesn’t mean zero-kilometre. We’re on Lake

An ingredient that’s never missing from your dishes? Passion and curiosity. Without passion you’ll never succeed in developing and creating an excellent dish, and without curiosity you won’t have the courage to try out new products, new techniques and so on. It’s an important part of inspiring passion, in a virtuous circle.
4
What’s your signature dish? Spaghettone Matt mantecato al ristretto di gamberi di fiume and Calvisius caviar, three main ingredients to represent the surrounding region.
5
And on the subject of experimenting, what dishes are you developing at the moment? Some lake fish dishes, from a creamy fusillone in butter served with a twaite shad and burnt onion sauce to a new version of the Calvisano sturgeon, which we’ve had on the menu for a few months.

The traditional tourism attraction is the wine and food – fine Barolo and Barbaresco, wonderful dishes and especially the Tuber Magnatum Pico, or as it’s more commonly known, the white truffle of Alba. Truffle hunting is a pursuit based on a very practical foundation of natural clues, but it’s also influenced by less tangible factors. Truffle hunters regard the moon as an integral part of their work (the latest International White Truffle of Alba Fair was, in fact, dedicated to our satellite). The lunar phases are one of the most useful indications of the best time to find truffles. The region’s ambassdor throughout the world, the white truffle is an extremely rare type of fungus that cannot be cultivated. It is gathered between 21 September and 31 January. It comes in a variety of shapes and has a distinctive, very powerful smell. It must be eaten raw, in thin slices on simple dishes from the local Langarola tradition like tajarin, raw meat, fried egg or fondue. How do you choose a truffle? How do get the best out of it? How do you keep it? How do you eat it? All you need to do to become an expert is follow a truffle tasters’ course, which will provide some fundamental information about fungi and the utensils needed to adopt the correct approach to the proper tasting of a truffle. A Sensory Analysis expert from the OIAT (International Organisation of Truffle Tasters) reveals a whole series of arcane facts about tasting and sensory tests. To buy truffles with confidence it’s best to remember a few simple rules - consult reliable sources about market trends, make sure you are given the type you asked for, check the truffle hasn’t been coated in cornflour to change its colour and that there no holes filled with earth, check that it gives off a pleasant aroma all over, make sure how ripe and clean it is and make certain it is not a reconstituted product. langheroero.it - tuber.it

scar Mazzoleni, born in 1979, is the beating heart of Al Carroponte, one of the rare Krug Ambassades in Italy and around the world, a
place that fully embodies the Maison Krug philosophy. In 2014 this skilled, passionate sommelier opened his restaurant in Bergamo together with Silvia Mazzoni, transforming an old workshop into a venue where fine eating combines the more informal atmosphere of a bistro with a wine list of over 1,600 labels, carefully selected by the host to accompany local dishes reinterpreted by the chef and finger food in the wine bar. In just a few years Mazzoleni and his restaurant have collected an enviable series of awards and accolades – Oscar became a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne in 2017, Al Carroponte was voted Best Bistrot of the Year 2017 by Gambero Rosso, chosen as Enotavola of the year by Vite Colte (the Guida I Ristoranti d’Italia L’Espresso 2017) and was recently recognised as Cantina dell’Anno 2019 by the Guida I Ristoranti d’Italia L’Espresso.
1
Who is Oscar Mazzoleni? I’m a maître sommelier who’s worked his way up the ladder, and I believe you never stop learning. Now, at almost forty years of age, although I’m a Chevalier of Champagne and Krug Ambassador I prefer to describe myself first of all as one of the front of house team, which I think is the best job in the world. Sure, it’s a complex task that demands sacrifices and dedication, but that’s paid back when guests leave my enobistro happy and satisfied.
2
How did your passion for wine begin? It all started when I was fourteen. I was at the Hotel School and my teacher told me that working in a restaurant also meant learning about wine. I was a total non-drinker, but I decided to broaden my knowledge of the subject. As soon as I started I was thunderstruck, it was a love that wasn’t just about the wine itself, it was inspired by everything in that world – the vines, techniques, work and dedication that lies behind the label. From then on wine became my life.

Which Italian winemakers do you prefer? And which wines? Italy is a centre of winemaking excellence. If I had to choose from the wonderful products of our vineyards I would go for the Nebbiolo-based wines of the Piedmont region and the wines of Etna, which are beginning to stand out for their elegance.
4
Do you have any advice for those entering this world? I would advise them to cultivate a passion for wine, and never stop moving forward. You have to try, to experiment, to compare relentlessly. The wonderful thing is that studying wines is very enjoyable, so it’ll never be a sacrifice!
5
Which wines should a cellar in the home never be without? A home cellar should show an emphasis on sparkling wines. They’re an excellent solution as accompaniments for food. If in doubt they’re always the perfect partner that will always make a good impression!

The large screen shows animated cartoons, adding extra fun and colour to the surroundings. The young spectators can watch the films while lounging in the warm water. There’s also an 85 square metre fitness room, a place to exercise while enjoying the lovely Alpine scenery, and a 1,000 square metre family Spa for relaxing with the whole family. Adults will love the exclusive wellness area, where they can relax in floralscented steam baths, in the Tyrolean sauna with a breath-taking view of the Alto Adige mountains or the Brechel bath with spruce branches. This adult-only area also hosts theme showers, an ice fountain, a relaxation area with direct access to the exterior lawn, rest areas, a solarium and drinking water fountains. An extensive menu of wellness and beauty treatments with plenty of spaces for relaxation completes the offer. sonnwies.com

HOTEL FEUERSTEIN, BRENNER, ALTO ADIGE Thunderous waterfalls, snow-covered meadows, a fairytale lake and all around the silent peaks of the Val di Fleres, a magnificent valley a few kilometres from Vipiteno and the Brenner Pass – this is the scene that greets guests of the hotel Feuerstein, a 5-star mountain resort intended for families, perched at a height of 1,250 metres. It is reached on foot after leaving your car in the car park, situated underground so as not to disturb the hotel’s untouched surroundings. The high point is the large Mountain Spa (3,000 square metres), inspired by a holistic well-being concept, drawing on the primordial energy that bursts from the natural Alpine resources – water, heat, wood and rocks, used in various personalised well-being treatments for guests, kids included. For the wintertime, the Val di Fleres offers many routes for mountain skiing enthusiasts, as it is not far from the ski areas of Ladurns (15 km of pistes, around five minutes away by car), Racines and Monte Cavallo near Vipiteno, all accessible with the same skipass. feuerstein.info

Every skier’s dream, one that comes true with the opportunity to sleep at the Super G hotel. Eight rooms are available, including two suites, all dedicated to the giants of history. 5 questions to... Franco Iseppi president of the Touring Club Italiano Antonella Euli
T
he TCI is a non-profit organisation that for more a century has been involved with tourism, culture and the environment. The heart and strength of the TCI are its
280,000 members, and its mission is to develop tourism, incentivising and supporting the discovery of Italy’s less well-known and less frequently-visited aspects of Italy’s artistic and landscape heritage, protect Italy’s historical, artistic and natural heritage by educating tourists that resources cannot be replaced and must be held in trust for future generations, and that they must be used correctly and responsibly, and finally to promote a spirit of mutual understanding and respect among peoples. We asked the president, Franco Iseppi, form his thoughts on tourism in Italy.
1
How has the way people travel changed in the online age? One significant element in tourism today is the more direct approach, the disappearance of intermediaries linked to factors like the economic situation, the spread of ICT, structural causes like low-cost mobility and social factors resulting from the age of travellers and the demand for personalisation and unique experiences. More traditional retail travel agencies and tour agencies have now been joined by online agencies (OLTA), bed banks and low-cost airlines that distribute their product on the web. As a result tourist have been able to play a more active role, one previously reserved for those making the offer, fed by images, videos and reviews on the web 24 hours a day, every day of the year – all of which are capable of inspiring dreams and desires that can then be transformed into reality with just a few clicks.
2
What do Italians look for today when they are travelling? There are now so many more reasons to travel that now we no longer talk about tourism in the singular. The traditional distinctions of seaside, mountain and cultural contrast with the plethora of micromotivations that exist today, like food and wine tourism, shopping, activities, urban and well-being. Another phenomenon makes modern tourism even more complex – the mutual influence of different types of travel. Cultural tourism, for example, is increasingly linked to wine and food, and also shopping or events. Not forgetting the growing popularity of so-called experiential tourism, a relatively new form of travel that emphasises the central role of the individual and his or her experience, which is the true essence of contemporary travel.
3
How is Italy perceived abroad as a tourist destination? On an international level Italy enjoys very high levels of fame and desirability, which is down most of all to the undeniable value of our cultural heritage. Farming and enogastronomy are also a natural
86
WONDER WORLD
complement to the cultural offer because they express our country’s identity and its various regional assets. Then there’s the scenery, whose beauty and distinctive nature shapes Italy’s image throughout the world. Finally, there’s the value of hospitality, a distinctive element in our offer that’s greatly appreciated by our foreign visitors.
4
Destinations for cultured, inquisitive travellers I won’t suggest any specific destinations, but rather ways of travelling that respond to a tourist demand that’s different from the norm. First there’s slow, experiential tourism linked to the many villages in the Italian hinterland. Our Bandiere Arancioni (Orange Flag) mark will help you choose – for the past twenty years it’s been certifying small towns and villages (the countrywide total now stands at 230) that have retained their history and authenticity. Secondly, I’d recommend a tourism that emphasises the relationship with residents, something that’s nicely exemplified by our cultural volunteering project “Aperti per Voi” (“Open for You”), where the precious help of the local communities that are active participants in the initiative enables travellers to discover places (there are currently 77) that are otherwise barred to visitors, a good example of what taking care of your local environment means.
5
What’s the difference between tourists and travellers? Tourists are more clearly the result of the process of industrialisation of travel that began in the period after the Second World War. The consumers-clients of a product and services that are evolving to provide them with a pleasant, enjoyable experience. Travellers, however, display different consumption patterns, and want to learn about different places and people. During its long history and through the wide range of activities it has developed over the years the TIC seeks to address the traveller that exists in all of us.

he Foundation is in the San Babila district of Milan, and this home-museum’s interiors have been adapted by Gae Aulenti inside the Casa Parravicini, a centre of excellence dating back
to the 15th century. Curated by Francesco Stocchi, the exhibition is based around three thematic nuclei and is laid out over the Foundation’s three floors, enabling Paolini’s works to engage in a dialogue with Margherita Palli’s striking backdrops, inviting visitors to discover the artist and his concept of the Bello ideale. It is an introspective journey on several levels, during which Paolini highlights his philosophical research on time, the discovery of a dimension where the past, present and future are not stages in a linear progression but lead back to a continuous present, like his work: in effect, a single continuous piece.

The Villa del Quar, part of the LVX division of the prestigious Preferred Hotels & Resorts chain, is a luxurious refuge in Valpolicella, near Verona, an area that has been famous for its wine since Roman times. It’s not surprising, then, that the huge vineyard that surrounds the propriety nurtures grapes that go to produce Satyrus wine, a blend of corvina, corvinone, rondinella, merlot and cabernet. Originally a Roman residence providing accommodation for dignitaries and officials travelling along the via Claudia Augusta, the hotel structure still includes remains of the old walls and a Roman cellar that hosts tastings and dinners with dishes created from recipes by the ancient Roman gourmet Marcus Gavius Apicius. It became a castle when under the control of the Scaliger family of Verona, and then a Veneto villa, as attested to by the date of 1539 that appears on a frieze.
