Now she focuses her activities on rediscovering 20thcentury design, and Nilufar has become a hub for lovers of these objects. At the same time she seeks out young talents whose work reflects an undercurrent of tradition, encouraging their creative development. As a result, the exhibitions in the gallery host a combination of historic and emerging design, revealing a constructive synergy with a tight aesthetic coherence.

made its originality its identifying feature. In fact, in the nineties, when the legacy of functionalism still prevailed, the company had the courage to make some revolutionary steps that only much later entered into the common consciousness. Its creations were ahead of their time in using vivacious colours, free and unpredictable shapes, irony and the desire to astonish. The taste for experimentation has always led the research and innovation – above all concerning materials and new technologies – that has given life to furniture designed by world famous architects and designers. Laudomia Pucci, the brand’s Image Director and ambassador for the hotel within the Rocco Forte City Insiders programme, has designed an exclusive fuchsia and turquoise foulard celebrating the Savoy and its unique location in the
heart of the city on the Piazza della Repubblica. The architectural decoration of the hotel, piazza and city landmarks like Brunelleschi’s dome, depicted in the inimitable Pucci style, also adorn the glass tabletops on the terrace of the Irene alongside chairs in warm Mediterranean colours. The partnership continues in the new lobby, whose ceilings have been restored to their original height, creating an airy, welcoming space. White dominates, contrasted by vivid, colourful notes in the House’s characteristic shades. 5 questions to... Kavj, for rather special women Valeria Rastrelli
A
fashion project inspired by the vision and friendship of two young stylists united by a dream. Kajetana Orsini, born in Rome, 1984, with a background in fashion acquired
at Maison Martin Margiela, Diesel, Make Up For Ever and Italian Independent – and Vittoria Orsini, born 1985 , also in Rome, a stylist boasting collaborations with Sandro Ferrone and Laura Biagiotti – had an idea in mind, and after following different career paths they decided that the moment had come to make that dream come true. The result is Kavj, a combination of Kajetana and Vittoria, a series of bags designed down to the smallest detail and hand made in Italy, using only prized leathers
1
How did Kavj come into being? It was inspired by the concept of friendship and our brand philosophy together with the value of the symbols, representing personalities and colours and their contrasts, another distinctive feature of the collection. In Teia, our first project, there are four symbols, four opposites that attract, four signs representing male and female, stability and action, the natural world and the world of dreams, the Earth and its four elements, the four seasons, the four directions. Then the sun, a symbol of light and intelligence, the completion of a work, the fulfilment of inner perfection, the waxing moon that strengthens, nurtures and helps gather energy and complete projects, and Uranus, a symbol of the sky, representing a dynamic force that, freed from the ties of the past, urges action and brings change and creativity
2
How do you link this symbology to fashion? Of the four intersecting elements, fashion and dreams share one – interpretation. We interpret fashion in the same way as we interpret signs – fashion is global and personal at the same time, just like a dream, with its repetitions of common, shared interpretations that are filtered by our “I” and our own experience of life.
3
How would you describe your brand? Kavj is the reflection of two personalities, two opposing spirits that compensate one another, joined by the same vibrations and a shared project – creating symbols to wear, accessories that give strength to those who know how to interpret them through their
38
WONDER WORLD
own tastes. So every bag can reveal something about you, and communicate values, desires and objectives through symbols
4
Is that how it was for Mangabell, the new bag in collaboration with Chantecler? We’re very proud that the illustrious jewellery brand from the island of Capri believed in us. We have shared stories of values like friendship, and Magabell is the result of this collaboration. It is inspired by Japanese manga comics that tell stories full of life, of passion, stories of women. It’s a coconut print clutch with a simple shape by a special bright green colour that reflects our love of colour. The round clasp is stamped with the Chantecler logo, surrounded by fifty diamonds with a total of 1 carat. The brand’s bell symbol is attached as a charm, so it can be replaced by other Chantecler charms. It’s a cult bag, made exclusively to order and with personalised leather and clasp.
5
What about the next goals? During the rest of this year we’ll be focused on marketing and distribution in Italy, while in 2019 we will strengthen it abroad, since Kavj is very popular on the Chinese market. Sales were very good especially after the presentation of Mangabell on 23rd May in Venice, at Fondaco dei Tedeschi boutique, where the entire Kavj collection was sold out. Now Mangabell is in Capri, at the Chantecler shop, and it’s a great success. We’re quite sure we’ll repeat this wonderful experience in the future. kavj.it

The idea is to repurpose antique fabrics, which become a background for artisanal embroidery and decoration
A
n Italian brand inspired by a desire to support artisanal skills in all their forms. The idea, from Viola Melpignano and Philippe
Gifford, underpins a search for natural fabric lengths to use as canvases – not for painting, but for embroidery. The objective is to achieve artisanality in its widest meaning, starting from a study of the excellence and details embodied by these fabrics. The result is light Italian linen and cottons, ethereal Sangallo lace, unique Oriental embroideries and vivid North American patterns, as well as techniques and weaves known only to certain local communities in Africa, Venezuela, Colombia, Guatemala and beyond. The mission is to select and use only artisanal fabrics created according to ancient techniques handed down from generation to generation of small-scale producers. The raw materials are totally natural, worked exclusively by hand and given no chemical treatments. The project aims to support local craftspeople and promote their skills by offering them a twofold opportunity – to support themselves and safeguard a priceless heritage of traditions. In this way fashion also becomes a means to improve quality of life for

Classic outerwear gives way to cloaks and ponchos, dresses, t-shirts and trousers (for men, too), changing shape and lines to become comfortable garments that embrace the figure, while bags and accessories give wearers a spiritual dimension, a connection with the world’s remotest, forgotten locations, whose people can develop financial independence and nurture their traditions and culture through these garments. The artisans and their stories come to life in these simple yet exquisite products – lines, colours and weaves in an attractive, exclusive mix meet different worlds and faraway places, giving customs and traditions a cutting-edge dimension. eginning in the north with a rising star, the Veneto region is home to the Osteria del Guà Restaurant at the Barchessa di Villa Pisani set in the gardens of historic villa of Andrea Palladio di Bagnolo di
Lonigo. The young talent Giulio Ierace, of Calabrian origin and a protégé of Gualtiero Marchesi, boasts a prestigious CV. Irace is the chef that you do not expect him to be. In spite of being shy of 30 years of age, his is a highly accomplished cuisine. When he arrives at the table to greet his guests, his youthfulness can be disarming but as you recall what you have just tasted, you may well feel the inclination to bow down in praise of this young talent. His work begins to beguile guests’ palates from early in the morning at breakfast, which is served outdoors beneath the ancient portico and consists of traditional cakes and biscuits made from ingredients that are humble but rich in nutritional value, locally-sourced seasonal produce that varies according to availability. These are accompanied by a delicious selection of salamis, hams and cheeses from the local area. Ierace’s enthusiasm has brought a breath of fresh air into the kitchen, where his Mediterranean origins blend seamlessly with tradition and modernity, giving rise to unexpected treats. The ingredients are few but are enhanced by a precise, almost obsessive, preparation in order to show full respect for the integrity of the ingredients. Giulio offers a moment of particular pleasure for diners: the possibility to taste bread, particularly the bread made from burnt wheat, that is warm and fragrant, baked in large loaves just like those he prepared with his grandmother when he was a child, an experience that formed his desire to transmit and share a sense of great conviviality. labarchessadivillapisani.it

he intimate and welcoming atmosphere within an old masseria – a typical Apulian farmhouse – that has been restored in keeping with the Apulian architectural tradition, is the ideal
setting in which to immerse oneself completely in a “slow” lifestyle. The elegance and atmosphere of upper Salento and the local, vegetarian and vegan cuisine with an emphasis on eco-sustainability make Masseria Le Carrube the ideal venue in which to pass some unforgettable moments. The chef’s techniques and experimental creations are perfectly in step with the research and rediscovery of traditions that are never neglected, but rather studied and refined respectfully according to his own style. Santoro creates modern interpretations of traditional cuisine to create delicious and balanced dishes. The menu offers a modern interpretation of the local area’s produce, selected according to its quality and the season, supplied by local producers or even from the Masseria’s own vegetable patch, while keeping the use of 00 flour and refined sugar to a minimum. The line up includes a velouté of cannellini all’arrabiata, ricotta and basil Bombette on a cream of tomato, Apulian flower Tortelli with a sauce of crushed baby tomatoes and cacio cheese, medallions of cashew nuts on a velouté of zucchini, red lentil burger on a cream of artichokes, ricotta and chard balls with a veloutè of pecorino, passing on to a an artichoke and fior di latte mozzarella parmigiana. When it comes to salads, Massimo Santoro does not fail to impress: avocado, endive and pistachio, fennel with orange and organic seeds, perhaps accompanied by fresh ricotta or giuncatina cheese. here is a place, just outside Udine where the food is very good - actually, it’s excellent. The restaurant in question is Il Fogolar, at the best Western Hotel Là di Moret, managed by the Marini family since 1905. That year the Marini family opened an inn and staging
post for the carriages arriving from Austria and Hungary. After having crossed the threshold of Il Fogolar, diners find at the centre of the room the fireplace that gives the restaurant its name. The ceiling, however, is covered with almost 600 commemorative plates from the Buon Ricordo association, to which the restaurant has belonged since 1968. Managing the dining room is the highly efficient maître d’ Renato Gazzola, while sommelier Juri Cossa is a great admirer of the wines of Friuli and proposes alongside the leading names from the region some smaller more unusual propositions, such as the natural wines in amphorae of Josko Gravner and Stanko Radicon. In the kitchen Chef Stefano Basello, born in 1974, and his staff create dishes that are a perfect balance of innovation and gastronomic tradition.

5 questions to... Camilla Alberti, the new President of the Strada del Franciacorta Antonella Euli
1F
Who is Camilla Alberti? irst of all, someone with a huge passion for wines because I have been working for many years with wines and vineyards. After graduating in Foreign Languages and Literature with a focus on Tourism Management – my university thesis was on the development and evolution of the Franciacorta wineries – I attended a Masters degree at the University of Milan focusing on the management of the wine-producing industry. In 2003 I took over the running of the Castelveder vineyards, the company founded by my grandfather Renato in 1975. I am now the company’s CEO and I am involved in promoting the company both in Italy and abroad.
2
How did you reach the top of the Strada del Franciacorta Association? I have been a member of the board of the Strada del Franciacorta Association for many years and I have been a passionate supporter of boosting the profile of the area in terms of tourism and the landscape, participating in conferences together with representatives of other wine routes and gastronomic itineraries from around the country.
3
How do you feel about this prestigious appointment? The general assembly of partners chose me to guide the Association over the next three years and my presidency follows that of Lucia Barzanò, who led the Strada del Franciacorta from 2015. After having worked for many years at the Strada, also serving as Vice President, today I feel ready to face this

important responsibility. I am keen to do so with a board that includes young people from various important organisations relevant to the development of tourism in Franciacorta.
4
How would you describe Franciacorta? A wonderful place waiting to be discovered – maybe through our wines. With an 80km route that begins in Brescia, a city that I adore and where I live with my husband and three children, the Strada winds through the hills passing rich village vineyards, castles and ancient homes, finally reaching the shores of Lake Iseo. Building upon what has been achieved so far, I will be the promoter of quality wine tourism in Franciacorta, a direction that the Strada embarked on successfully in 2000, the year of its foundation. The aim is to intercept the new requirements of experience tourism with a range of proposals and activities that make Franciacorta a valued and desirable destination nationally and internationally.
5
Plans for the future? Many, and they are ambitious plans that I intend to share with our partners, and the organisations and other associations that operate in the territory, with the aim of ensuring increasingly high quality standards for the numerous visitors arriving for the first time in Franciacorta and also for those who are returning, charmed by the variety of what our area has to offer wine enthusiasts and those passionate about art, culture, nature and eco-sustainable tourism. franciacorta.net

The links with the region are strengthened by an entirely local estate and cellar staff, all of whom know the land and work constantly to uphold the brand’s exceptionally high standards. This year the estate is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the first harvest. Only fifteen years after its launch, when the first vines were planted on land with a rather special red clay and limestone soil, Monteverro has been transformed into a wine production business with an enviable reputation on the international scene. It is now listed among the greats of the major wine producers. The estate’s first four wines - Vintage 2008 - made their debut in 2011 - Monteverro, from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot grapes; Terra di Monteverro, made from the same grapes but with greater immediacy; Tinata, made from Syrah and Grenache, and Chardonnay. The offer is completed by a free gym with Technogym equipment and “L’Elicriso” Thalasso Centre & Spa. “L’Elicriso” is one of the most complete wellness centres in the Mediterranean region, an oasis of mental and physical wellbeing covering 2,500 square metres, specialising in thalassotherapy – four seawater swimming pools at different temperatures, two saunas, a hamman with large window looking out onto the Marinedda bay, an extensive selection of thalassotherapy programmes, massages, beauty treatments and a cardiofitness suite for aerobics and holistic disciplines. The wellness offer and the Elicriso Executive Suites with a private seawater thalasso pool and hydromassage pool are the perfect solution for couples seeking tranquillity and privacy. hotelmarinedda.com

summer time LA TONNARELLA, SORRENTO, CAMPANIA This corner of paradise on the magnificent Sorrento Peninsula is named after the special nets used to catch the smaller members of the tuna family, called “Tonnarella”. Perched high a rocky spur in one of the city’s most scenic locations, the site of a former tuna fishery, the hotel provides an ideal location for exploring the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi coast. It is also within easy reach of Positano, Amalfi, Ravello and the islands of the Bay of Naples. The Tonnarella is an oasis of peace and tranquillity for everyone seeking to enjoy a small corner of paradise and a relaxing vacation. It is the perfect solution for experiencing the timeless beauty of the Sorrento coast. The rooms range from classic to superior and de luxe. The scenic terrace opens out breathtaking sea views embracing the Bay of Naples. The suites are all of a high standard, but the best of these is the Suite Deluxe with its refined architectural elements, located in the hotel’s most scenic wing. The most attractive feature is the spacious terrace overlooking the sea, with loungers for relaxation and reading. The Suite Executive has a small independent lounge, bedroom, hallways and two balconies with sea view. The suite also has a private garden with a vista over the entire bay, as well as two bathrooms. One of these is carved directly out of the limestone rock, and has a mini hydromassage pool with a small cascade. From June to September guests eat by the waterside at the “Tonnarella mare” restaurant, where the chef offers a daily menu inspired by the Neapolitan culinary tradition, with a special emphasis on the sea. But the real surprise is the private beach hidden among the chalk rocks that are typical of the Sorrentine coast. It’s accessed via a lift, and path along the verdant banks of a noisy stream. It has to be experienced to be believed, leaving memories of the beauty of Sorrento, Vesuvius and the islands of the Bay of Naples. latonnarella.com

5 questions to... Borgo Valle Rita, many destinations in one place Antonella Euli
B
orgo Valle Rita, the ancient charm of country life, a combination of relaxation and open-air activities. The entire estate located in the Alta Murgia is criss-
crossed by paths that can be enjoyed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback for a full immersion in nature. For sporty types there is a tennis court nestled amid a citrus orchard; for those in search of relaxation, the swimming pool dominates the hill and faces towards the sunset; those seeking wellness experiences can enjoy treatments in the open air in the shade of the palm groves. Carlo Lunati, the current owner of the Valle Rita tells us about the many facets of this enchanting destination.
1
The origins of the Valle Rita? It was founded by my grandfather at the beginning of the 1970s as a working farm, Valle Rita, with 103 hectares of land belonging to the Girafalco estate, including the masseria (traditional Apulian farmhouse) and the ancient 11th century lookout tower. The farm was converted to organic agriculture in 1992 in order to respect the land that we love.
2
And its current incarnation? Today Valle Rita is a project involving different parts: the country resort and the organic farm. Both are connected by a vision that is born from a love for the land and the related values: culture and cultivation. The first is interpreted as a combination of traditions and testimonies of a farming culture that has been rooted in this area for centuries and the second serves to safeguard biodiversity and recover various ancient indigenous species, hence the decision to pursue a farming approach that is 100% organic.
3
How would you define Borgo Valle Rita? A project conceived to share the beauty of these places and to transmit the traditions and culture that characterize them. The Borgo was developed in 2002 through the meticulous restoration of the pre-existing buildings, houses and outbuildings. The old farmers’ houses retain their original floors and some fittings as well as their sober atmosphere, although they are now equipped

with the all modern comforts. Some have vaulted ceilings in tuff, a typical rock used in Salento and an important testimony to the migration to this part of the Murge plateau of farmers from Lecce, experts in the cultivation and manufacture of tobacco who constructed their houses in keeping with the architectural style of their original home area.
4
And good food? The food is the identity, culture and tradition of Borgo Valle Rita, renewed each day through the dishes of chef Antonio Padula. The strong bond with the land means that taking centre stage are vegetarian recipes made using the fresh ingredients from the vegetable garden, which has been actively involved in the project “BiodiverSO. Biodiversity of the fruit and vegetable species of Puglia” that promotes the recovery of ancient species that are “becoming extinct”, such as the yellow Crispiano cherry tomato and the white aubergine. The restaurant occupies a space between legend and history; the rooms were once used to house the tobacco pickers that came here from Salento to work.
5
Where exactly is Borgo Valle Ritalle Rita? We’re in the Alta Murgia, at the crossroads between the Sassi of Matera, the Laterza Ravine, Ginosa and Massafra, the uncontaminated Ionian coast and the Trulli of the Valle d’Itria. A jewel of Apulia that is just waiting to be discovered. vallerita.it

Are you beginning to get the picture? Introducing us to this enchanting destination is its general manager Giovanni
Sirabella, elegant and cordial he proudly describes himself as 100% Ischian born and bred. When he talks so passionately, his love for his island and the hotel that he manages is evident. “The hotel takes its name from one of the observation towers built in the sixteenth century to defend the local population from Saracen incursions. Perched on the rocks overlooking the sea, the tower has been restored respectfully according to its original design. The reception spaces and some of the 45 rooms and suites are situated inside the tower, which is also the location of the medical spa that boasts a beauty and wellness centre. Other rooms are set in the gardens, all of them decorated in a refined style. Some suites have terraces with sea views and private pools, and for those in search of the utmost in tranquillity and relaxation, there is a bungalow for four immersed in the gardens.” On the subject of the spa, the hotel facilities have been voted one of the best in Italy, both for the location and the excellent treatments offered. This alone would make a trip to the hotel worthwhile, if then you think that the hotel lounge is situated in an ancient fortified tower and some of the rooms are dotted around the gardens, that you can dine on Mediterranean cuisine in one of the two restaurants, the Chandelier and the Sciuè Sciuè and that the hotel has its own secluded private beach, it goes some way to explaining the honours and accolades that the hotel has deservedly won. “Our spa is a temple to wellness and the philosophy of salus per aquam is followed to the letter.
