TOUR DES VOYAGES PANORAMIC MURALS Curiosity and a sense of adventure prompted merchants and travellers to venture into unfamiliar lands on the ancient trade routes. The map of the world was crossed by the itineraries of trade in spices, incense, amber, silk and tea. These are the leitmotifs of this collection that take us back to the famous reports of Marco Polo and Matteo Ricci. Inspired by encounters with faraway peoples, objects and places Tour des Voyages, composed of five different panoramas, turns any space, living area or bedroom into a genuine chamber of wonders.

ear readers, I never thought I’d find myself writing such an editorial. In a globalized, connected and interconnected world, we have always told in the pages of WONDER WORLD Seasonal how the sense
of beauty, if shared, could be multiplied thus increasing the effect of its effectiveness. Whether we talked about fashion, furniture and design, food or hospitality, we have never used ostentatious tones but we have always been careful to manage words to spread and make known the beauty of our country. Italy. Now precisely this globalization leads us to become aware of how fragile everything is, and the practical, emotional and existential management of our experiences forces us to put everything in perspective. In these moments of profound reflection, I make myself even more aware of how beautiful the world is, how often we take it for granted (or we have taken it for granted to date), and the desire to live it without excuses or wasted time increases just when you’re forced to stay locked up at home. With great effort we edit this Spring issue of WONDER WORLD Seasonal. I would like to thank all the collaborators who participated in the creation of this issue, the suppliers who were able to guarantee its printing and distribution, and our partners / investors who continued to believe in the value of communication also and above all in moments like this. We are there. Hugs to all. Matteo Galbiati CEO Platinum Media Lab

RATIONALIST thought Franco Albini was a versatile figure whose work ranged from construction to design, installations and urban renewal Teresa Crespi
H
e was one of the main figures in the development of Rationalist thought in architectural products, from furnishing to industrial design and museum installations. Albini graduated in architecture from the Milan Polytechnic in 1929 and went on to work with the Ponti and Lancia studios. His collaboration with
the Casabella magazine played a crucial role in shaping his thought, leading to his definitive adoption of Rationalism. He became a spokesperson for the movement in the context of Italian culture. In 1931 he opened his first professional studio in Milan, and began to take an interest in public housing – his research continued after the war, when he took advantage of the opportunities offered by the country’s reconstruction, initiating a collaboration with Franca Helg in 1952. Milan and Genoa form the geographical axis along which Albini left his deepest mark, designing the layout of stations on Linea 1 of Milan’s Metropolitana underground railway (1962/63) together with graphic artist Bob Noorda and creating a series of urban

designer and construction works in Genoa, including the Palazzo Bianco museum (1949/51), Palazzo Rosso (1952/62) and the Tesoro di San Lorenzo (1952/56). Throughout his work, from domestic interiors to industrial design projects and museum installations, Franco Albini always imposed a logical coherence, intense expressive purity and a deeply moral ethical and historical dimension. Embracing architecture and design, Albini’s production created a fulcrum for innovation in Italy’s architectural culture in the 20th century, supported by focus on creativity and rigorous construction and composition expressing high aesthetic standards. It’s possible to gain a deeper insight into his work by visiting the Fondazione Franco Albini, launched in 2007, thirty years after his death. Albini, who preferred to be described as an artisan, has been a frequent subject of research but as yet no-one has succeeded in doing his life and work full justice. Following the recognition of the value of his work, described by the Italian state as a National Historic Heritage, an institution was founded to showcase his still contemporary works and ideas, presenting tremendous research opportunities through an extensive documentary archive. The Foundation was opened in Milan, in an Art Nouveau building at via Telesio 13, the original site of the studio where Franco Albini and Franca Helg worked, displaying an “honest and ethical” method of working. The projects created by the Studio Albini involve a total of around 22,000 drawings, 6,000 period photos and 2,500 slides as well as models, writings, letters, technical essays, books and magazines from the Studio’s library. All together they form a heritage that provides a starting point for investigating a significant piece of Italy’s historic memory. The Fondazione Franco Albini hosts unique pieces and original prototypes, and exists hand-in-hand with the Studio Albini Associati, becoming the only Museum Studio that is still active, a place where modernity and tradition combine in a way of working that reflects Albini’s genius. fondazionefrancoalbini.com

Sport & Postural EXPERIENCE Emanuele Svetti designs a Personal Trainer studio in the storehouse of an old mill in Tuscany Valeria Rastrelli
T
he project is by a young, brilliant architect called Emanuele Svetti, born in Cortona in 1976. After training at Florence
University’s department of architecture, where he specialised in industrial design under the guidance of Roberto Segoni,
in 2004 he set up the Studio Svetti Architecture. This marked the beginning of a process of technical and design research outside the normal approaches of theory and design, focusing on the rediscovery of artisanal techniques and new materials to be applied to industrial production, or traditional materials to be reinterpreted with a modern appeal Svetti calls the New Tuscan Lifestyle. He entered the world of interior design by interacting with a number of companies in the furnishing and contract sector, handling their product design and marketing strategy. This was a critical period in his professional development, during which his eclecticism and his approach, which naturally ranged from what he called “macro-projects
W O N D E R W O R L D 33
projects to design objects, soon enabled him to make an impression. He entered into a series of collaborations, working with companies like Del Tongo Industrie SpA, Poltrona Frau Group, Varaschin, Oikos Paint, Bross and I-radium, Kolher Italia Kitchen & Bath, C&C Italia and Bimar Contract. The experience he gained in creating hotel interiors especially expressed his idea of making a hospitality structure something simple, regarding it as an element of consumption, a space to exploit, one establishing its own identity without embodying a celebrity architect’s desire to make it an icon to be remembered for all time. As a result he has designed a personal trainer studio in the storehouse of an old mill in Tuscany, a combination of period and modern, an example of how much of Italy’s architectural heritage could be given a new life. The gym is deeply rooted and represented by the space it occupies. Stone outlines the surfaces of the perimeter walls, sculpting unusual shapes and setting up a kind of dialogue with the technology and the ideological minimalism applied to architectural space. The encounter between the archaic nature of the imposing wooden trusses and the bright, white paint create an ethereal setting where the gymnastic equipment imposes its presence in an atmosphere of extreme rigour and concentration. studiosvetti.com

ART DOMINATES ENERGY In his new avant-garde “Wave Functions” sculptures, Akelo transforms quantum entities into glittering vortices full of endless suggestions Monica Caiti
“A
t the level of subatomic physics, the universe has revealed that its fundamental essence is pure, immaterial energy. All matter is energy... and is characterized by a specific frequency and wavelength, i.e. with a certain number of wavelength cycles per second... Everything, including us, has a wave
function” (Gerald Lawrence Schroeder, physicist and theologian, from “The Hidden Face of God”). The cognitive and aesthetic research of Andrea Cagnetti aka Akelo find its latest expression in his collection of sculptures, “Wave Functions”, inspired by quantum mechanics. An artist from the Lazio region of Italy (he was born in Corchiano, in the province of Viterbo), he is internationally known for his extremely articulated creative path, supported by studies and research in the most disparate fields that, between vitalism and restlessness, winds through the past, present and future. His work ranges from precious jewels, all unique pieces fashioned using ancient goldsmithing techniques and composed of thousands of pieces of infinitesimal size, up to his steel sculptures, which sing the praises of classicism, and to the most daring abstraction, as in the aforementioned “Wave Functions”. His work, therefore, differs widely, confirming an eclecticism and visionary quality that is rare on the contemporary art scene. However, all his creations tend towards a single end: achieving Beauty and Harmony. In his latest research, Akelo has followed several scientific leads. In an attempt to project himself towards a “different dimension”, one that transcends reality
36
WONDER WORLD
Bright, fluid and fluctuating, the “Wave Functions” of Akelo are not only aimed at breaking and/or dilating the canvas to overcome the two-dimensionality and even the three-dimensionality of the work of art. They don’t simply let us perceive the ultimate essence of reality, but rather they penetrate it, favouring a full immersion in the myriad pathways of the “other dimension”, which finally reveals itself

and the appearance and physicality of things, in order to grasp the depth, the sense of the absolute, the artist has penetrated into the meandering fissures of the infinitely small, where matter is pure energy, full of infinite potential and evolution. This is where the “wave function” comes into play. Indicated by the Greek letter psi (ψ) it describes the state of a quantum system (for example, the orbit of an electron) in all its components. More precisely, the wave function does not measure the actual state of a particle in a precise instant, but only the “probability” that the electron is in “this” condition in “that” given instant. It will be the scientist-observer who “precipitates” the quantum system, in this case the electron, in a definitive setup, through experimentation. In the same way, the artist turns his creative gaze towards the coalescence of infinite invisible energy entities of quantum mechanics and crystallizes some of them, turning them into tangible matter. And he does so with the complicity of light, which, in Akelo’s magnetic works, filters through the cracks in the panels, elaborating evocative schemes, where space-time penetrates into the void, without beginning or end, composing continuously changing symmetries, drawing orbital shapes, reliefs, shadow and chiaroscuro zones which, after giving reason for their existence, dissolve into a reciprocal vital relationship. It is not by chance that Akelo almost always chooses a metallic, glittering, reflective surface, capable of emphasizing the impelling presence of waves of energy, creating chasms of meaning, transcendental abysses, playing with the optical effects that the numerous concavities and convexity of the work produce by bouncing light in different gradations in space. akelo.it

In these pages, several sculptures from the “Wave Functions” collection are shown. Beside them, a close-up of the artist Andrea Cagnetti, aka Akelo, who lives and works in Corchiano (Viterbo). “I have spent most of my life working and shaping the material,” he said in an interview, “first manipulating a precious metal such as gold and then a baser one, such as iron... Thus, I experience the dimension of the infinitely small (with jewels) and the macroscopic (with sculptures), following these twin strands of inspiration: the harmony of classical forms and pure abstraction”.

Regarded as one of contemporary fashion’s greatest illustrators, in the 1980s the versatile Lopez contributed to the Vanity project (January1982 -October 1989), the Italian magazine helmed by Anna Piaggi, Alberto Nodolini and Luca Stoppini. With Vanity the image of fashion entered unknown, daring, previously-unseen territory. Adored by stylists, models and photographers throughout the world, he holds a place of honour in the history of fashion illustration, carving out a vital, productive career in the space of only thirty years. ntil 15 June 2020, as part of the “Torino Città del Cinema 2020. Un film lungo un anno” project (“Turin City of Cinema. A year-long film”), the Museo Nazionale del Cinema presents an exclusive look at the cinemaddosso i costumi di Annamode da Cinecittà a Hollywood,
exhibition, curated by Elisabetta Bruscolini. Here, cinema, art and fashion come together to celebrate the extraordinary Sartoria Annamode, a centre of Made in Italy excellence since the 1950s in the creation of clothing for large domestic and international film productions. It’s a floating exhibition, thanks to an extraordinary exhibit in the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino presenting the magic of cinema recounted by the people who have made movies since the film industry’s beginnings. A hundred costumes for forty films, a show where every garment is displayed like a work of art and depicted through a number of media – film extracts, quotes and touch panels that enable visitors to not only to touch precious materials but also to play and dream. An extremely immersive layout by Maria Teresa Pizzetti, given an interactive element through video productions by the Convertino & Designers Studio and curated by Massimo Mazzanti. A fascinating seventy-year story of female entrepreneurial drive unfolds along the 280 metre-long ramp inside the Mole, from “Dolce Vita” to the present day. Its protagonists are the sisters Anna and Teresa Allegri whose costumes and inventions made the Sartoria Annamode

AN IRREVERENT MENU AND REAL “DELIGHT”
J
ust outside Milan is a new venue with a gourmet touch that’s truly one of a kind in the area. The project is helmed by chef Fabio Zanetello, who offers an irreverent menu of playfully-named dishes that combine the flavours of Italy and “grandma’s cooking” from
the Padana region with fusion flavours from around the world, inspired by the travels of the “wandering chef”. After a long period working as consultant and TV personality he has finally settled down in Corbetta, his native city. Here, authentic recipes from the Milanese tradition are reinterpreted using innovative techniques with the addition of spices from the other side of the world. The idea for the restaurant came from the Corvino family, entrepreneurs in Corbetta for more than thirty years. Davide Corvino welcomes guests in his role as front of house host, and sommelier Christian Marcone comes direct from Davide Oldani’s nearby Michelin-starred restaurant, D’O. The Delight is a small venue with an elegant, modern design, “open kitchen, the first thing we started with and then we added all the rest”, meaning twenty-five covers, an inner courtyard and large terrace. A modern, Milanese-style trattoria for passionate foodies, Delight certainly lives up to its name, offering dishes based on the northern Italian tradition that will make guests feel at home with a gourmet cuisine. The restaurant’s name also refers to the light that plays a key role in the venue’s design. ristorantedelight.com

MODENA’S BLACK GOLD Balsamic vinegar of Modena boasts a tradition rooted in antiquity. Local vinegar producers, often family-run, still follow strict rules in their methods, making their product unique Antonella Euli
B
alsamic vinegar is an elixir with a long history, and it spends extended periods ageing in barrels. It has ancient origins – the Romans cooked grape must to make “sapum”, and in the late 18th
century it was produced for the Estensi family. In 1747 the archives of the dukes of Esti were already
mentioning “mezzo balsamico” and “balsamico fine”, the equivalent of today’s Balsamic Vinegar of Modena and Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO. What’s the difference between PGI (protected geographical indication) and PDO (protected designation of origin)? We’ll take a look at some numbers first – in 2017, for example, 90 million litres of PGI were sold, as against 15,000 bottles of DOP. That doesn’t mean, however, that there are no excellent PGI vinegars. Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is regulated by a watchdog organisation and a production code – for example, a PDO vinegar aged for twelve years (the minimum period) is “affinato”. If it ages for more than 25 years, then it’s described as “Extravecchio”. The magic word, the one that makes all the difference, is “Traditional”. If the vinegar is Traditional of Modena it is undoubtedly the finest and is always PDO, made using Trebbiano or Lambrusco must - always native varieties – and nothing else. It must also age in small barrels in locations in or around Modena. One of the grandees of the balsamic vinegar world is Adriano Grosoli of Aceto Balsamico del Duca. Now ninety years of age, Grosoli is the last of the quartet of entrepreneurs that also included Fini, Federzoni and Giusti. These far-sighted men transformed what was a simple family-run concern into a fully-fledged business.
Two names that always go hand-in-hand, Fini and Aceto Balsamico di Modena mean top-level gastronomy deeply rooted in the region and its tradition

NAPLES Since 1870 the five-star luxury Grand Hotel Parker’s in Naples has been an icon of charm and hospitality, and now it introduces George, its new gourmet restaurant. Awarded one Michelin star in the 2020 edition of the guide, it is named after the English marine biologist George Parker Bidder. In the late 19th century Bidder took over ownership of the Tramontano, transforming it a grand hotel that now bears his name. The underlying concept in the kitchen and interiors is entirely new after a restyling by the Studio Pisani Morace of Naples, which is giving the hotel a face lift without compromising the building’s timeless charm. Silk velvet, slate and black marble, moire-effect wallpaper and bronze leaf surfaces enrich the new George’s interiors. Its wide windows open onto the terrace, which provides a stunning night-time view of the Bay of Naples. The young kitchen team, average age thirty, is led by Neapolitan chef Domenico Candela, born in 1986. He returned from France to take the helm at the George. t’s story that’s all about the hospitality embodied by Nika. It started in the 1970s, when the American Frank Burnaby and his companion Gayle sailed their yacht into Nika reef (then known as Kudafolhoodoo) and
dropped anchor there. They spent a year in this beautiful place, and Gayle gave birth to Dhon Kokko (a name that in the local language means “White Child”). The local population of fishermen on the island of Bodufolhoodoo helped the couple build their house and the first stone was laid in 1977. The dwelling still stands, and is now the Nika Island Sultan Suite. The 1980s saw the arrival in the Maldives of Giampiero Bellazzi, founder of Nika Island, introducing Italian culture with the Gonfalone (heraldic banner) of San Marco, the symbol of Venice, which has flown on the island since 1983. Although it is now an iconic resort, the distinctive natural environment and culture of the place have remained intact, just as they were when Nika was used by communities from nearby islands as a location for growing fruit and repairing their Dhoni, the typical local fishing boats. The coral basins still used for growing fruit trees and the island’s centuries-old plants have not been destroyed to make way for new construction, and the gardens are like the sea surrounding the islands. Nika’s villas are a homage to the Maldivian architecture of olden times, where coral and wood combine to create warm, flowing spaces. The roof cover is made by interweaving by hand palm leaves from the trees that grow on the island, a skill that is handed down by the local women from generation to generation. This paradise offers a series of exciting experiences – sipping an aperitif at the beach bar while admiring the sunset, the spa with aquatic gardens in the shade of the ancient Nika tree, an intimate dinner on your

She has passed into history for defying convention as a collector and patron, and she has always been celebrated for her collection of European and American modern art. During the 1950s and 1960s, Peggy Guggenheim began to look beyond the borders of Europe and the United States, taking an interest in the art of Africa, Oceania and the indigenous cultures of the Americas. On the occasion of the exhibition “Migrating Objects”, 35 works of non-western art will be exhibited for the first time at Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, revealing the nucleus of the patron’s collection that is rarely visible to the general public. guggenheim-venice.it
