editorial Eccoci al secondo appuntamento con la nostra idea di “vivere Cortina” e questa volta vestita di neve. L’inverno è il periodo più magico dell’anno e la valle è in fermento. Gli eventi mondani convivono con le feste private, le manifestazioni sportive e culturali, e noi vogliamo segnalare solo il meglio delle cose da fare e da ammirare: una libera scelta, squisitamente redazionale, dettata dall’esperienza di vita vissuta e dai “consigli degli esperti” che vivono a Cortina. Ci sono ristoranti e luoghi d’incontro, concerti e gare, e sport, tantissimi sport bianchi: dalle discese in pista e in fuoripista alle passeggiate nei boschi su una slitta trainata dai cavalli. Sono cose che ci piace fare, da sempre, e vogliamo condividere con chi ci legge.

Here we are again, back for a second take on “living Cortina” – the snow-clad version this time. Winter is the most magical time of the year and the valley positively buzzes with life and activity. Society events play out alongside private parties. There is a huge focus on both sport and culture too. Needless to say, we have combed the calendar for a list of the top things for our readers to do and see this season.

The editorial staff made the decisions about what to include on the basis of their own experience and with a little expert advice from local Cortina residents. We’ve included restaurants and meeting spots, concerts and competitions, and lots and lots of winter sports and activities: from downhill skiing on our magnificent pistes to trips through snowy woods on horse-drawn sleds. These are the things we have always loved doing and so we’re delighted to have the opportunity to share them with you, our readers.

La mia Cortina...

“C

ome si fa a non amare Cortina?” Ci confessa Roberto Cardazzi, vicepresidente dell’Associazione Albergatori di Cortina. “La magia è nella vallata che l’accoglie, nella natura che la circonda, intatta, non deturpata da mostri di cemento, ed è nelle sue montagne. Imponenti quel tanto che basta, e al contempo rassicuranti. Abbracciano Cortina, quasi a proteggerla, e sono il nostro tesoro più grande.

D’estate verdi come smeraldi e tutte da scoprire, sentiero dopo sentiero; in autunno camaleontiche creature di colore bronzo e oro da contemplare, giorno dopo giorno, per assistere allo straordinario foliage dei boschi, e d’inverno algide e soffici di neve, un paradiso per sciatori ma anche per i puristi della natura. La magia di Cortina è anche fama e mondanità, ruolo che interpreta alla perfezione grazie al cinema, che ha cristallizzato un’epoca felice. Cast internazionali hanno vissuto e girato qui dagli anni ’50 e subito il fascino misterioso del luogo, tornandoci ancora e ancora. Amanti, La Pantera Rosa, Il conte Max ma forse anche le vicende surreali del più contemporaneo Vacanze di Natale, hanno fatto a Cortina ritratti dalle mille sfumature. Paladini di tanta bellezza sono ancora i nostri monti, e forse proprio quel senso di intima esclusività, ha attratto personaggi più o meno famosi, che hanno eletto Cortina a buen retiro e hanno permeato l’aria frizzante di un’allure internazionale che si respira soprattutto sul Corso, passerella di intere generazioni. Là, dove le vetrine delle moda si alternano a quelle delle botteghe tradizionali e dei wine bar, va in scena ogni giorno, il rito dello struscio: una indolente passeggiata dove si incontrano habitué e bella gente.

La notte è giovane a Cortina e mi piace ricevere gli amici al Vip, il locale che appartiene alla mia famiglia, dove si mangia (bene n.d.r.), si balla, e si canta”.

ow could anyone not love Cortina?” asks Roberto Cardazzi, vice-president of the Association of Cortina Hoteliers. “Its magic is there in the valley it nestles in, the unspoilt nature that surrounds it, completely undefaced by cement monstrosities, and, of course, its mountains.

They hold Cortina is an almost-protective embrace and they are our greatest treasure. In summer, they are as green as emeralds and a pleasure to explore, trail by trail. Then in autumn, they have a wonderful bronze and gold chameleon-like beauty thanks to the extraordinary foliage in the woods. In winter they are cold and soft with snow, a paradise for both skiers and hard-line nature lovers. Cortina’s magic is also about fame and haute monde. A role it plays to perfection thanks to film which captured it in a very happy period. International casts lived and shot here from the 1950s onwards and were seduced by the mysterious allure of the place. They came back again and again.

A Place for Lovers, the Pink Panther, Il Conte Max and even the surreal antics in the more recent Vacanze di Natale have painted a rich and varied portrait of Cortina. Our beautiful mountains and perhaps our sense of exclusive intimacy have attracted some very famous people, others less so, who have chosen Cortina as their refuge and brought an international allure to its fresh, crisp air. You can feel it most strongly on the Corso, which has been a catwalk for entire generations and on which designer store windows alternate with traditional workshops and wine bars. This is where the ritual of the “struscio” plays out each day: a slow, leisurely stroll that brings together regulars and the beau monde. The night is young in Cortina too. I like meeting friends at the Vip, which my family owns and where you can eat (well, ed.’s note), dance and sing”.

Lady Dolomiti L’Audi Fis Ski World Cup, la Coppa del Mondo di Sci Femminile che si terrà a Cortina il 17 e 18 gennaio 2015, tinge di rosa le magnifche cime della vallata n appuntamento importante per le atlete e un grande evento per il pubblico che le applaudirà nella Discesa Libera e nel SuperG. Kristian Ghedina, ampezzano pluricampione di discesa libera, ci svela i segreti di questa pista mozzafiato alla quale è legato da “un rapporto molto speciale”, fatto di tanti elementi. Forse perché è una pista che alterna tratti molto veloci e ripidi a quelli un po’ più pianeggianti, forse perchè è quella dove è cresciuto e, nel febbraio ’90, ottenuto la prima vittoria in Coppa del Mondo ma senz’altro perché è la pista dove ancora, “quando i miei acciacchi me lo permettono, faccio un po’ di curve”. Nonostante i suoi 44 anni, i tecnici della Coppa del Mondo lo coinvolgono spesso per avere qualche consiglio da campione e, nei giorni precedenti alle gare, Cristian è il primo a provare i salti e qualche curva.

«In caso di bisogno sono anche sceso come apripista ma non è mancata occasione che abbia provato anche le reti di protezione a causa di cadute involontarie, fortunatamente sempre senza grosse conseguenze.

Una pista dove ogni curva è diversa dall’altra mentre il sole è una costante, eccetto pochissimi tratti d’ombra, e questa è una caratteristica molto apprezzata dagli atleti, perché mentre scendono riescono ad analizzare e interpretare il terreno al meglio». Per entrare nel vivo della competizione mondiale vogliamo citare, passo passo, la descrizione della pista, vista con gli occhi del campione. «La partenza è situata in un luogo incantevole proprio ai piedi delle Tofane dove si gode di un panorama eccezionale. Le prime curve sono molto veloci e bisogna stare molto attenti perché ci sono dei punti dove si può perdere molto tempo, come la curva sotto il Rifugio Pomedes che è cieca ed in salita. Dopo circa 20 secondi di gara si affronta un secco curvone a sinistra che immette, forse, nel tratto più spettacolare e suggestivo della pista: il famoso Schultz delle Tofane.

The Audi FIS-SKI World Cup, a key event in women’s skiing, will be held in Cortina on January 17th and 18th.

The valley’s magnificent peaks will acquire a feminine touch his is an important date for the female skiers and for the fans who will cheer them on in the downhill race and the Super-G. Local hero Kristian Ghedina, who has won the men’s downhill title on numerous occasions, lets us into some of the secrets of this breathtaking slope with which he has “a very special relationship.”

Perhaps it’s because it’s a slope that alternates between steep rapid stretches and flatter sections; perhaps it’s because it’s the one he grew up on and where, in February 1990, he won his first World Cup title. And it’s certainly the slope where, “aches and pains permitting, I still do a few bends.” Even though he’s now 44, the World Cup trainers often turn to him for advice and in the days leading up to races “I’m the first to try out the jumps and bends; when necessary, I’ve also been the forerunner, but there have also been times when I’ve tested the protective netting after unintentional falls, fortunately without serious consequences.” It’s a slope where every bend is different, while the sun is a constant factor, except for some very few stretches of shadow. This is much appreciated by the skiers as it enables them to analyse the terrain as they go downhill. In order to get the feel of a world contest let’s follow the step-by- step description of the slope, as seen through the eyes of the champion. “The starting point is located in an enchanting place at the

The first bends are very simple, but you have to be careful because there are spots where you can waste a lot of time, like the one at Rifiugo Pomedes, which is blind and uphill. After about 20 seconds of racing you come to a large dry bend to the left which leads into arguably the most spectacular and evocative section of the slope: the Tofane Schluss. It’s a nosedive where you fly by at about 130 km per hour. Immediately after that you have the Duca d’Aosta jump, which is equally spectacular; the entrance is a blind spot and you

L’ultimo tratto, quello apparentemente più facile, presenta ancora molte insidie. Una su tutte, il lungo curvone di destra dove, a mio avviso, si può ancora vincere o perdere la gara per la difficoltà che c’è nell’interpretarlo. Non bisogna aver fretta di chiuderlo altrimenti si deve ricorreggere la linea

At the end of the diagonal, where you come to the “Labyrinths” slope, there’s another key point that requires a lot of technical skill: the Germans call this the “Great Bend.” It’s very difficult because it slopes out to the exterior. Timing is therefore fundamental as you begin the bend. You can’t get this wrong because, if you are too low, then you will have to lift your body and you will lose your rhythm

In molte edizioni la gara si è proprio decisa in questo punto della pista, dove il terreno è molto mosso e ondulato, e bisogna tirar fuori l’ultima energia che si ha in corpo per far lavorare le gambe e ammortizzare al meglio le sconnessioni.»

for the Scarpadon’s S bend, which leads into the flatter area of the Rumerlo. The last section seems to be the easiest, but it has plenty of traps.

The worst is the long right-hand bend which, I believe, can decide the race. This is because you can’t go too fast as otherwise you’ll have to alter your position half-way through, thereby losing speed. But at the same time you can’t wait too long as you’ll be too low and you’ll need to raise your body position in order to recover your trajectory. This will mean that you will waste valuable time as you come to the Rumerlo diagonal, which passes under the six-seater ski lift. You then enter the final section, which has always been rather stodgy for technical skiers but more suited to “sliders” like me. We tend to prefer pure “slippery slopes” where we can show our potential. The race has often been decided here, an area where the terrain is rough and undulating. You need to use your body’s remaining energy and work your legs to cushion the effects of the slope’s disjointed nature.”

una prerogativa del legno. Soprattutto quello vecchio e non invecchiato. Recuperato e portato a nuova vita. Trasmettere solidità, e calore. E intimità.

Accade in una casa degli inizi del Novecento sita a Cadelverzo, località defilata rispetto alla elitaria Cortina, e forse proprio per questo ancora più naturale e preziosa. L’idea dell’architetto Enrico Franzolini, una nota firma del design internazionale dal tratto immediatamente riconoscibile, è quella di preservare la struttura portante originale dell’edificio, composta da muri perimetrali e divisori di grosso spessore. Il vano scale che collega i tre livelli su cui si articola la casa, è caratterizzato da un elemento

It exudes a special sense of solidity and warmth. And intimacy.

Nowhere is this truer than in an early 20th century home in Cadelverzo, an area a little removed from exclusive Cortina and probably even more precious and unspoilt for that. Architect Enrico Franzolini, a leading name on the international design scene, wanted to preserve the very thick outer and dividing walls which make up the weight-bearing structure of the house. The stairwell that runs to all three floors is characterised by an intriguing divider made of rough reclaimed wooden boards affixed to a wood frame. This is, of course,

a nod to the style of the haylofts of the old traditional wood and stone “tabià” of Cadore and Ampezzano in which the ground floors were normally used to house animals with hay stored on the upper levels.

This effect is further underscored by a lighting system that picks out the solids and voids created by the crisscrossing of the wood. The result is instantly visible to anyone arriving into the vestibule dominated also by a large, very sculptural iron and copper table designed by Franzolini himself.

The pretty wood-panelled “stube” is the heart of every Alpine home and was once the only heated room in the house. It takes its name, in fact, from the word for stove. planks. The exception to this is the kitchen and the bathrooms where large irregular porphyritic stone flags have been used. The kitchen is a clever mix of stainless steel and old wood. In fact, the contrast between rough metal and aged wood, natural stone and whitewashed walls is the main compositional feature of the chalet’s spaces which exude a sophisticated simplicity. A touch of richness is added, however, by very tastefully selected individual pieces of furniture. In the main living room, for example, a slender pristine white occasional table separates two 19th century pony skin-upholstered armchairs in front of the crackling fire. To one side is a collection of

osì come deep blue indica le profondità degli abissi, deep white evoca il candore intatto delle piste dello scialpinismo. È una disciplina antica che affonda le sue radici nella necessità di spostarsi dei popoli nordici che avevano gli sci come unico mezzo di locomozione. L’utilizzo dei primi sci da parte di popolazioni scandinave, prevedeva la risalita con gli sci, con o senza pelli di foca, o, in alternativa, la risalita a piedi. L’utilizzo delle pelli di foca (inizialmente naturali, poi per fortuna sostituite da prodotti sintetici) sotto le solette degli sci per permettere l’avanzamento e la tenuta in salita, è stato ripreso dagli esploratori delle aree polari, pionieri dello scialpinismo. inviolati, è una delle più magiche tra gli sport bianchi. Ma pur essendo potenzialmente alla portata di tutti, è comunque indispensabile affrontare lo scialpinismo solo con la giusta preparazione atletica e possibilmente insieme a professionisti della montagna.

The choice is yours, of course, but the most popular tours are the Croda del Lago, the Passo del Cristallo traverse, the Croda Rossa, the Bus di Tofana and the Creste Bianche traverse. Those new to the sport should buy, rent or borrow climbing skis with touring bindings that allow the heel to move, making it easier to climb, but can also lock the boot down for downhill skiing, synthetic skins to attach the bottom of your skis during ascents, ski mountaineering boots with rubber soles to make walking easier, and ski poles.

events e il polo su erba è uno spettacolo affascinante, quello su neve è ancora più emozionante. Se poi, invece di una gara, la manifestazione diventa Open allora l’emozione raddoppia. Nel 2015 Cortina rinnova il sodalizio con il polo ospitando l’Open Championship Italia 2015, il più importante torneo internazionale per club a cui partecipano i migliori giocatori e squadre del mondo. Le tappe?

La prima nella perla delle Dolomiti, dal 16 al 21 febbraio; poi a Milano, la città dell’Expo, dal 15 al 20 giugno e in Costa Smeralda, patria dei vip, dal 27 luglio al 1° agosto. Vige l’embargo per sponsor e partner, ma un dato è certo: sarà, come sempre, un grande evento, applaudito da pubblico e addetti ai lavori che assisteranno alla sfida sul lago di Misurina dei più abili cavalieri del mondo. Che la neve scenda a fiocchi o il sole splenda alto nel cielo, poco importa: cavalli e cavalieri sono allenati a sfidarsi sulla coltre candida di un lago ghiacciato e non c’è avversità meteo che tenga. L’atmosfera che si respira assistendo a un torneo di polo è di per sé elettrizzante e molto glamour.

Sarà per le antichissime origini di questo sport che gli inglesi hanno importato in Europa dall’India, sarà per l’eleganza con cui si muovono in simbiosi cavalli e cavalieri, o forse sarà perché da sempre il polo è sinonimo di esclusività. E, non a caso viene definito: “Lo sport dei re e il re degli sport”. Non resta quindi che prepararsi a questa magnifica kermesse che terminerà come di consueto, con premiazioni e un gran gala party per celebrare i vincitori. Anche per questo, embargo strettissimo sulla location della festa. Comunque vada, ovunque sia, sarà certamente una festa esclusiva.

Cortina embraces polo W hile polo on grass is a fascinating sport, snow polo is truly spectacular. But then if the event turns into an Open, the thrill doubles. In 2015, Cortina renews its partnership with polo when it hosts the Open Championship Italia 2015, the leading international tournament for the world’s leading clubs and players. The first round takes place in the pearl of the Dolomites between February 16th and 21st and is followed a second clash in Expo City, Milan, between June 15th and 20th, before moving on to VIP central, the Costa Smeralda, between July 27th and August 2st. The organisers are still tight-lipped about sponsors and partners, but rest assured this will be, as always, a great event. The sight of the world’s most talented polo players doing battle on the snow-clad surface of Lake Misurina is sure to win applause from both fans and those in the game alike. Regardless of whether snowflakes are fluttering down from the heavens or the sun is shining high in the sky, both ponies and riders will be champing at the bit to take each other on the frozen lake. Weather will not be an issue. Needless to say, spectators will flock to admire the skills of the players and the imposing

profiles of the snowy peaks rising behind them.The atmosphere at any polo match is electric and very, very glamorous. This may have something to do with the ancient origins of a sport imported to Europe from India by the English or the wonderfully elegant symbiosis between man and horse. Or perhaps it is simply because polo has always been synonymous with exclusivity: it is, after all, known as ‘the sport of kings and the king of sports’. So all that remains now is for us to prepare for this magnificent event which will conclude, as always, with a prize-giving ceremony and gala party in honour of the winners.

Once again, the organisers refuse to be drawn on the venue for the party.

But however it plays out, wherever it is, it will most certainly be sublimely exclusive. Just like polo itself.

he incanto Cortina vestita di neve! Adagiata nella sua conca, protetta da una corona di montagne che d’inverno sono così candide e immacolate e belle da togliere il fiato. Tra una sciata e l’altra, all’ora dell’aperitivo sul Corso, si programma la cena tra amici. Abbiamo scelto per voi tre ristoranti, proseguendo il nostro percorso di ricerca nei sapori della tradizione culinaria ampezzana. Rifugi caldi e accoglienti, di legni profumati, di tavole ricche di calore e di cose buone.

Partiamo dal Ristorante Lago Ghedina, uno dei locali più suggestivi immerso nella natura, sulla strada che porta dal Col Druscè a Fiames, ora gestito dai proprietari della Baita Piè Tofana, Eddy e Wolly. Poi passiamo al Villa Oretta della famiglia Bocus, che “apparecchia” le sue origini veneziane e, in alta quota, fa sognare la laguna della Serenissima. Infine andiamo Al Camin, sulla strada che porta al Passo Tre Croci e Misurina, ospiti di Lorena e Fabio Pompanin, per gustare la vera tradizione montanara.

We have selected three restaurants for you, continuing our gastronomic adventure as we discover the culinary traditions of the Ampezzo region.

Cosy, welcoming refuges built of aromatic wood, tables full of good things. We start with the Ristorante Lago Ghedina, one of the most picturesque venues, immersed in the natural landscape on the road from Col Druscè to Fiames. It is now managed by Eddy and Wolly, the owners of the Baita Piè Tofana. Then we move to the Villa Oretta - it’s owned by the Bocus family, whose Venetian origins are clearly reflected by wonderful food they serve. Even up here it’s enough to make guests dream of the lagoon city.

Finally, we visit the Al Camin, on the road to Passo Tre Croci and Misurina, to enjoy the real mountain tradition and allow ourselves to be pampered by hosts Lorena and Fabio Pompanin.

A pochi minuti dal centro, il rinomato ristorante stile chalet (con qualche camera, precisamente otto, per chi vuole unire il buon cibo a un piacevole soggiorno) è un luogo no-stop per chi ha voglia di un pizzico di sorridente venezianità.

Le due eleganti sale hanno grandi finestre che si affacciano sulla vallata della conca ampezzana e sono location ideale per cene a lume di candela. La cucina offre soprattutto piatti tipici nazionali, ma strizza l’occhio alla cucina veneziana e propone i “cicchetti” misti (quei deliziosi stuzzichini caldi che si gustano nei più veraci bacari di Venezia) come antipasto, si continua con una varietà infinita di risotti o i tagliolini gratinati allo speck, il famoso baccalà mantecato con polenta alla griglia (ottimo!) e l’altrettanto fegato alla veneziana che i Bocus consigliano ai palati più esigenti. Il pesce è una costante del menu, da provare gli scampi al curry con il riso pilaf. Si termina con i dolci di gran livello.

A few minutes from the centre, the famous chalet-style restaurant (with a few rooms - eight, to be exact - for those wishing to combine good food with a pleasant stay) is the ideal destination for anyone hankering after a little Venetian good cheer.

The two elegant rooms have large windows looking out onto the Ampezzo valley, and are wonderful locations for candlelit dinners. The kitchen specialises in typical Italian dishes with a nod to Venetian cuisine, offering as a starter mixed “cicchetti”, those delicious warm snacks that are served in the most authentic Venetian wine bars, an infinite variety of risottos and pasta dishes like tagliolini gratinati allo speck, the famous creamed salt cod with grilled polenta (excellent!) and the equally illustrious fegato alla veneziana, a dish the Bocus recommend for the most demanding connoisseurs. Fish is a constant presence on the menu - try the curried scampi with pilau rice.

Cuocere il vitello a vapore insaporito con spezie ed erbe aromatiche per circa 3 ore; tritarlo finemente e unirlo al grana padano, sale e pepe, fino a ottenere un impasto omogeneo. Stesa la pasta, si procede alla composizione del raviolo. Mentre il raviolo viene portato a cottura in acqua salata, prestando attenzione perché rimanga al dente, in una padella sciogliere e rosolare dell’ottimo speck (nostrano) tagliato a fiammifero, con parte del suo grasso e foglie di alloro. Scolare i ravioli e saltarli in padella amalgamandoli con del rosso d’uovo, pepe e grana padano, facendo in modo che la salsa ottenuta resti cremosa.

HOME-MADE RAVIOLI. SHOULDER OF VEAL RAVIOLI ALLA CARBONARA (REVISITED) Steam the veal with herbs and spices for around three hours. Chop it finely and add the grana padano, salt and pepper until you have an even dough. Spread the pasta out and fill the individual ravioli. Cook them in salted water, making sure it remains al dente. Cut some good quality, locally sourced speck julienne-style, then melt and brown the matchsticks in a frying pan with some of its fat and a bay leaves. Drain the ravioli and sauté in a pan, mixing in egg yolk, pepper and grana padano, ensuring the sauce retains its creamy consistency.

Scaloppa di Foie Gras d’Oca co n ara n ce e a n a n as caramellato

Caramellare con un cucchiaio di zucchero la fetta di ananas fresco, fermare la cottura con il succo d’arancia e tenere da parte. Pulire la fetta di fegato, scottarla in un tegame ben caldo fino a che sia ben rosolata da entrambi i lati , passarla in forno moderatamente caldo (fino a raggiungere 58° gradi al centro) e posizionarla su un foglio di carta assorbente per eliminare il grasso in eccesso. Preparare una salsa con l’emulsione ottenuta dal succo d’arancia usato per cuocere l’ananas e un po’ del grasso rilasciato dalla cottura del fegato. Impiattare l’ananas caramellato, appoggiare sopra la scaloppa di fegato e versare la salsa. Guarnire con una fetta di arancia e una di ananas disidratato, qualche chicco di pepe di Setchuan, del sale di Maldon (la scaloppa non è salata) e servire possibilmente con del pan brioche.

ESCALOPE OF FOIE GRAS OF GOOSE WITH CARAMELISED ORANGE AND PINEAPPLE Caramelise a slice of fresh pineapple with a spoonful of sugar, bring the cooking to a stop with orange juice and put to one side. Clean the slice of liver, sear it in a hot pan until brown on both sides and place in a moderate oven until it reaches 58° degrees in the middle. Lay it on a sheet of kitchen paper to get rid of excess fat. Prepare a sauce with the emulsion obtained from the orange juice used to cook the pineapple and a little of the fat released by the liver as it cooked. Plate up the caramelised pineapple, lay the escalope of liver on it and pour over the sauce. Garnish with a slice of orange and a slice of dried pineapple, a few Szechuan, Maldon salt (the liver isn’t salty) and serve, possibly with some pain brioche.

Le segnalazioni per gourmet partono dalla tartare di carne salada con caprino e spinacini, dal carpaccio di cervo con vinaigrette di lamponi per arrivare allo strudel di verdure con formaggio di malga e al timballo di riso nero con gamberi e curry. Pasta e ravioli sono fatti in casa (tipo i casunziei di rape rosse all’ampezzana e i ravioli di patate ripieni al verde di spinaci e ortiche); le zuppe di stagione fanno pensare a quelle della nonna, le carni sono di ottima qualità e il baccalà alla veneta con polenta è solo per veri intenditori. Notevoli anche la selezione di formaggi accompagnati da mostarde e miele, i dolci maison, i distillati o, se amate il genere, una grappa preparata secondo tradizione.

The gourmet dishes range from tartare di carne salada con caprino e spinacini to deer carpaccio with raspberry vinaigrette, strudel di verdure with malga cheese and black rice timbales with prawns and curry. The pasta and ravioli are homemade - try, for example, the casunziei di rape rosse all’ampezzana and the potato ravioli stuffed with spinach and nettles. The seasonal soups are just like grandma used to make, the meat is excellent and the baccalà alla veneta with polenta is for true connoisseurs only. There is also a mouthwatering collection of cheeses accompanied by mostarda and honey, house pastries and sweets, liqueurs and, if it’s to your taste, a grappa distilled using traditional methods.

Fare dei coni con la pasta fillo precedentemente imburrata e cuocere in forno preriscaldato a 180 gradi per 5 - 6 minuti. Spremere 3 - 4 arance, far ridurre il succo a fuoco lento della metà e lasciare raffreddare. Nel frattempo lavorare 500 gr di ricotta fresca con un bicchierino di Grand Marnier e 100 gr di zucchero a velo, aggiungere 100 gr di panna montata e mescolare dal basso verso l’alto. Riempire una sac à poche e farcire un cannolo. Infine disporre su di un piatto la salsa all’arancio e il cannolo, spolverare con zucchero a velo e servire.

CRISPY CANNOLI WITH RICOTTA FOAM Make cones with previously-buttered filo pastry. Bake in a heated oven at 180 degrees for 5 - 6 minutes.

Squeeze 3-4 oranges, reduce the sauce by half over a low flame and allow to cool.

Meanwhile blend a small glass of Grand Marnier into 500g of fresh ricotta and 100g of icing sugar.

Add 100g of whipped cream and mix from the bottom upwards. Transfer to an icing bag and fill a cannolo. Place the orange juice and cannolo on a plate, sprinkle with icing sugar and serve.

Fuoripista, fondo, eliski, scialpinismo, snow kite… A Cortina l’elenco degli sport bianchi è infinito e va da quelli estremi a quelli so slow.

Ma la discesa resta la sciata per eccellenza.

Adagiata nell’ampia Valle d’Ampezzo, “abbracciata” dalle Dolomiti, offre splendide piste in diversi comprensori: Tofane, Faloria Cristallo - Mietres e Lagazuoi - 5 Torri. Con lo skipass di valle si può sciare su tutte le piste del comprensorio Auronzo-Misurina, San Vito di Cadore e Cortina: un totale di 140 km inseriti nel circuito Dolomiti Superski suddiviso in percorsi facili, medi e difficili. Le 37 piste - 6 nere (tra cui la Vertigine Bianca, solo per sciatori esperti, che proveranno l’ebbrezza di una discesa in neve fresca, su una pista ecologica a impatto zero) 12 rosse, 13 blu e 6 verdi - per un totale di 47 Km, sono servite da 51 impianti a fune dei quali 6 funivie, 29 seggiovie e 16 skilift.

Off-piste, cross-country, heliskiing, ski mountaineering, snow kite ... At Cortina the list of winter sports is endless and it ranges from the extreme to the “so slow.” Yet downhill skiing remains the activity of choice. It’s made easier by the large and sunny Ampezzo Valley, which is “hugged” by the Dolomites, and it offers splendid slopes in three districts: Tofane, Faloria - Cristallo (Crystal) - Mietres and Lagazuoi - 5 Torri (5 Towers). With the Valley skipass you can ski on all the slopes in the AuronzoMisurina, San Vito di Cadore and Cortina district: a total of 140 kilometres of slopes that form part of the Dolomite Superski circuit, which is divided into easy, medium and difficult slopes.

The 37 slopes (6 of which are black, including Vertigine Bianca, “White Vertigo”, which is only for expert skiiers, who can enjoy the exhilaration of going downhill in fresh snow, on an ecological slope with zero carbon imprint) have a combined total 47 kilometres. They are served by 51 cable installations including 6 cable cars, 29 chair lifts and 16 skilifts.

2 Volete tornare bambini, anche solo per qualche ora?

Bene, allora noleggiate uno slittino, trovate la vostra discesa, più o meno spericolata, e lanciatevi veloci come il vento, sferzati dalla neve farinosa. Le piste sono tante e tutte diverse per difficoltà e lunghezza: da quella battuta di Guargné con1 km di discese e risalite in seggiovia con l’impianto di Mietres, a quella dal Rifugio Ra Stua; mentre è più impegnativa quella dal Rifugio Croda da Lago che si raggiunge a piedi da Campo: 3 ore di salita ma la discesa è interminabile! Al Rifugio Scoiattoli si sale invece in seggiovia e si scende in velocità mentre decisamente più “tranquilla” è la pista dal Rifugio Dibona. Per i bambini la più adatta è la pista di Mietres, lunga 1km e servita dalla seggiovia. Il top della gamma resta la discesa in notturna al chiaro di luna. Si cena in rifugio (si sale in motoslitta) e si torna a valle con slittino e pila frontale.

Do you want to be kids again, even if it’s only for a few hours? Good, well, then buy (or hire) a toboggan. Find a slope that is sufficiently daredevil for you, and go like the wind, over the crisp snow. You can do all this more at Cortina and if you combine this with an excursion in snowshoes, then it will be all the more fun. The slopes vary in both difficulty and length: from the well-trodden Guargné with its kilometre of downhill and uphill, with the chair lift at Mietres and then Rifugio Ra Stua; harder ones like that at Rifugio Croda daLago can be reached on foot from Campo: it takes three hours going uphill but the downhill section goes on forever! At the Rifugio Scoiattoli (“Squirrel Refuge”) you go up in a chair lift but come down at full speed, while the slope from Rifugio Dibona is decidedly more laid back. For kids the best track is at Mietres. It’s about a kilometre long and is served by a chair lift. Yet pride of place goes to racing downhill by moonlight.

You can have dinner in the mountain hut (at Mietres; you get there by snowboard) and you return to the valley by toboggan: wearing a headlamp is essential.

La passeggiata più romantica? Quella su una slitta trainata da cavalli, avvolti in calde coperte, tra i boschi bianchi di neve. E come colonna sonora, il suono degli zoccoli dei cavalli e delle campanelle sulle slitte. È slow snow, l’ultima tendenza per chi, alla velocità dello sci da discesa, preferisce il contatto con la natura e sport più contemplativi. A Cortina è un’esperienza da provare per passaggiate baciate dal sole o sotto un manto di stelle, avvolti in paesaggi da favola, nel più totale silenzio, lungo un percorso che riporta indietro nel tempo, a quando le slitte trainate dai cavalli erano l’unico mezzo di trasporto nei rigidi inverni. I percorsi sono diversi e ben organizzati: li propone la Fattoria Meneguto, agriturismo immerso nella natura con Maneggio assistito da Istruttore Federale di II livello, lo stesso che in estate organizza corsi ed escursioni coi cavalli.

This is “slow snow,” the latest trend for skiers who prefer contact with nature and more contemplative sports to downhill racing. At Cortina horse sledding is proving to be a big hit, and it’s a must if you want to immerse yourself in the enchanting scenery of the Dolomites, which have been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO, and which many people consider to be the most beautiful mountain range in the world. Whether you’re “kissed” by the sun or covered by a cloak of stars, you will ride in total silence along a path that takes you back in time, to when horse-drawn sleds were the only form of transport in the tough winters.

The tracks are varied and well organized: we have chosen the ones suggested by the Meneguto Farm, great horse lovers who last year arranged splendid gallops through emerald woods.

Skiing with a helicopter transfer is without doubt the ultimate in free ride skiing. You get straight back to the top and although this may not be in everyone’s reach, both financially and in terms of ability to go downhill on fresh snow, it’s great in terms of sensations for lovers of crisp snow. The helicopter will enable you to move easily and to reach places where the snow is better, both in terms of skiing and safety. On the other hand heliskiing – which was invented in Canada – requires good visibility for flying and so it is largely dependent on weather conditions. Flying in a helicopter above Cortina is an exciting experience. From Fiames you fly over the Ampezzano basin and as you ski downhill through nature you will feel goose bumps. It’s a unique combination, and an adrenaline rush is guaranteed. Heliskiing can only be practised in the company of qualified guides and only experienced skiers can ski on the off-piste. It can, however, be done in groups of up to 6 or 10 people. And you have to set off early in the morning in order to be sure that the snow cover doesn’t disappear. You look for the right slopes and off you go.

HELISKIING

L’eliski è uno sport contestato dagli ecologisti, che lo considerano non rispettoso e svilente nei confronti della montagna.

Forse per questo non ha ancora preso piede in Italia. Rimane comunque il non plus ultra dello sci freeride. Una risalita rapidissima, certo non proprio alla portata di tutti, e per i costi e per l’abilità nello scendere su neve fresca, ma certamente generosa di sensazioni uniche per gli appassionati di neve farinosa. L’elicottero permette di spostarsi facilmente e di andare in luoghi dove l’innevamento è migliore sia per la sciata che per la sicurezza. Per contro l’eliski, disciplina di matrice canadese, ha bisogno di buone condizioni di visibilità per volare e quindi questo servizio dipende fortemente dalle condizioni meteorologiche. L’emozionante sensazione del volo in elicottero sopra Cortina, che da Fiames porta a sorvolare la conca ampezzana e i brividi della discesa tra la natura, creano un connubio unico, procurando pochi minuti di pura adrenalina.

L’eliski è una disciplina che si può praticare solo se accompagnati da una guida alpina e possono fare il fuoripista solo sciatori di livello medio o alto. Si parte di buon mattino per essere certi che il manto nevoso non possa cedere, si cercano pendii adatti e poi si scende.

Volteggi, piroette, giravolte: acrobazie a tempo di musica… Forse è solo materia per atleti, ma resta il fatto che pattinare sul ghiaccio è uno degli sport più “leggiadri” da praticare e un’ottima alternativa alla neve. Piace a grandi e piccini che si divertono a scivolare, a volte anche in senso figurato, su un grande specchio di ghiaccio. Sarà perché la scenografia evoca le fiabe nordiche dell’infanzia e atmosfere di festa con un pizzico di magia.

A Cortina si pattina allo Stadio Olimpico, casa delle Olimpiadi Invernali del ’56, da soli o in compagnia di istruttori qualificati. La moderna copertura in acciaio e vetro che consente l’utilizzo in ogni periodo dell’anno: sia durante l’estate sia in condizioni di maltempo. In inverno si può assistere agli incontri del campionato Italiano di Hockey di Serie A, alle serate Ice Disco, alle gare di pattinaggio artistico e a numerosi eventi e esibizioni di tutti i generi, dal Gran Galà di Pattinaggio ai concerti.

Maybe it’s just for athletes, but the fact of the matter is that ice skating is one of the most fascinating and elegant sports around and it offers a great alternative to the snow. It appeals to both adults and children whom enjoy sliding on a large ice rink.

Maybe it’s because the scenery evokes the Nordic fairy tales of our childhood and the party atmosphere with a touch of magic.

At Cortina you can skate at the Olympic Stadium, which hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics, either alone or in the company of qualified instructors. The modern steel and glass roof ensures that it can be used all year round; both in summer and in the case of bad weather you can dance and pirouette on the ice.

And in winter you can watch the local ice hockey team, which is in Italy’s top division (Serie A), as well as artistic ice skating competitions and performances of every kind, from the great ice skating gala to concerts.

6 Both your adrenaline and your competitive spirit will kick in just by looking at the long go-kart ice-snow track, not far from Cortina. In order to feel the exhilaration of racing downhill there are a few quick rules: you need to wear thick clothing, preferably the type used for skiiing, including gloves, sunglasses and above all a helmet (this is compulsory, otherwise you will be disqualified!) The ice race sets off and it’s an amusing alternative to more classical winter sports. The track is a couple of kilometres in length and it ofers bends and counterbends, skids and inclines, acceleration and skids.

Chums fly by and challenge each other (with stopwatches but in total security) on little carts. At the Snow-ice you can take driving lessons in order learn how to drive safely, as well mastering the techniques for handling the vehicle when traction is poor.

There are ability tests at the end.

GO-KARTING ON ICE

Adrenalina alle stelle e voglia di competizione, scattano solo dando uno sguardo della lunga pista neve-ghiaccio, poco fuori Cortina, dove saettano i go-kart. Per provare l’ebbrezza della corsa poche semplici regole: indossare indumenti pesanti, possibilmente da neve, guanti inclusi, occhiali da sole, dopo sci, e soprattutto caschetto in testa (obbligatorio, pena l’addio alla gara!). La sfida su ghiaccio ha inizio e si tratta di una divertente alternativa ai classici sport bianchi. La pista è lunga un paio di chilometri e tra curve e controcurve, sbandate e pendoli, accelerate e derapate controllate, sfrecciando a bordo di piccoli kart si sfidano gli amici (a cronometro ma in totale sicurezza) e si arriva al traguardo. Allo Snow-ice organizzano anche corsi di guida sicura per apprendere le tecniche e imparare a gestire la macchina in caso di scarsa aderenza, con prove di abilità finali.

CANI DA SLITTA DOG SLEDDING

I cani dallo sguardo di ghiaccio. Potrebbe essere il titolo di un film, invece è la caratteristica dei Siberian Husky, i cani da slitta del grande artico. Per vivere l’emozione di guidare una muta di husky, non occorre andare al Polo Nord, basta cercare tra le nostre Alpi.

A Cortina si fanno meravigliose escursioni, e per condurre personalmente una slitta, basta seguire una breve lezione teorica e poi si parte, accompagnati da un istruttore. Imprescindibile, per la scelta di questo sport, un amore forte sia per la neve che per i cani. Il centro più attrezzato è a San Vito di Cadore, (8 km da Cortina) nella piana in località “La Graes”. Anche i bambini (non sotto i sette anni) potranno cimentarsi con un baby tour e guidare personalmente la loro muta su una pista tracciata apposta per loro. La novità però è la slitta tandem con due postazioni di guida e una muta di cani molto veloce, così da poter vestire i panni di coopilota dell’istruttore durante il percorso.

But in order to drive a pack of Huskies you don’t need to go all the way to the North Pole: you can experience that here in the Alps. At Cortina there are some great excursions and in order to drive the sled yourself you just need to take a quick lesson on the theory and then you’ll set off in the company of an instructor. A strong love of dogs and the snow is, however, essential. The best equipped centre is at San Vito di Cadore (8 kilometres from Cortina), on the plain in the “La Graes” area. Kids over the age of seven can have a go with a baby tour and drive a pack of dogs on a special track. The novelty is the tandem sled with two driving seats and a pack of fast dogs. In this way you act as the instructor’s co-pilot.

È sempre molto affollato ovviamente, frequentato sia dagli ampezzani che dai turisti, e a volte si fatica a trovare un tavolo, ma vale la pena attendere. Le specialità sono sia dolci sia salate e non è difficile intravvedere sotto un paio di occhiali scuri un “vip in vacanza” seduto in attesa di pastina e caffè. La cioccolata calda con panna resta un must di Lovat, e diventa sublime se accompagnata da qualche dolcetto appena sfornato. L’aperitivo invece si prende in veranda (coperta) meno affollata rispetto al locale.

They say that there key to success for a bar lies in the three Ls: location, location and loveliness. In this way they become legends for their regular customers but at Cortina we can add a fourth L. This is because we’re talking about Lovat, the bar and pastry shop that has become the stuff of legend. People go there for its rituals, from the aperitif to hot chocolate after a day on the slopes. It’s always busy and and sometimes it’s hard to find a table but it’s well worth the wait. The specialities are both sweet and salted and if you look closely you might see a celebrity on vacation hiding behind a pair of sunglassas as he or she waits for his or her pastry or coffee. Pride of place goes to the hot chocolate with whipped cream, especially if it’s accompanied by an oven-fresh dessert. Aperitifs are served on the (covered) veranda, which tends to be less crowded.

Skiing at night under the stars is an exhilarating experience as the crisp air rustles in your ears and the snow squeaks under your skis. These are the only sounds you will hear for the rest is total silence. You can live this magic on the Dolomite Superski circuit as the mountain huts are open until late and you can even watch night races. Nera, ci piace ripercorrere le tappe della quinta edizione, “giocata” nella zona del Faloria

a conca ampezzana è il palcoscenico perfetto per una manifestazione che coinvolge sport e amore per la montagna, aperta a tutti gli sportivi. Atleti e appassionati di tutte le età si sfideranno nelle discipline dello sci alpinismo, dell’arrampicata sportiva e del freeride nella zona sciistica del Faloria, e sul percorso della Punta Nera, zona tecnica e spettacolare ma soprattutto ben visibile a tutti. Quella del 2014 è stata una tre giorni intensa, che ha preso il via il 3 aprile con il Safe Day, il giorno dedicato alla sicurezza, all’arrivo della funivia Faloria, con stand del Soccorso Alpino, della GDF e dei CC dedicati alle nuove tecniche di soccorso

e di recupero in montagna in inverno. La competizione vera e propria sulle piste è iniziata invece la sera con lo Skialp Scoiattoli, una gara di sci alpinismo in notturna con partenza da Rio Gere, per professionisti e non. Chiusura in bellezza al rifugio con pasta-party, musica e premiazioni. Il mattino seguente, sempre in Faloria, la parola è passata ai teenager con la Junior Freeride Puntanera, unica gara italiana di freeski aperta ai minorenni con tre categorie: Baby, Kids e Junior dove i ragazzi si sfidano, in un ambiente controllato, in una delle tre discipline; sci, snowboard o telemark. Al termine: nutella party per tutti. In concomitanza, in piazza Angelo Dibona a

tappa del Vertical Combined Marco Da Pozzo in ricordo all’indimenticabile alpinista, guida nonché Scoiattolo di Cortina. Si tratta di una gara di boulder (arrampicata sportiva su una struttura artificiale) a prove libere e tentativi illimitati entro un limite di tempo di 90 minuti aperta a tutti.

Il clou dell’evento è stato sabato 5 aprile con il Freeride Challenge Punta Nera con i riders saliti in elicottero sulla cima della Punta Nera e scesi sugli sci con evoluzioni e salti nel vuoto, tra rocce, neve e cliff, per contendersi l’ambito trofeo. Il tutto su un manto di soffice powder, la neve fresca. Al termine, pranzo, concerto e premiazioni al Rifugio Faloria. Non resta che aspettare il prossimo appuntamento e, perché no, magari iscriversi alla gara!

High altitude extreme sports As we count down the days to the 2015 edition, we take a look back at the various stages of the fifth Freeride Challenge Punta Nera in Faloria he Ampezzo Valley is the perfect setting for an event that combines sport and love of the mountains. An event in which athletes and enthusiasts of all ages and levels did battle in the disciplines of bouldering, alpine skiing and freeriding in the skiing area of Faloria, and along the Punta Nera route which is not only technically challenging and spectacularly but, more importantly, visible to all. Three extremely intense, action-packed days which began on April 3rd 2014 with the Safe Day which featured Alpine Rescue, GDF and CC stands illustrating new mountain winter search and rescue techniques at the arrival point of the Faloria cable car. The competition proper began that evening with the “Skialp Scoiattoli”, a night-time alpine skiing competition for professionals and amateurs that started from Rio Gere. It finished in style with a pasta party, music and prize-giving ceremony at the refuge. The following morning, once again in Faloria, the baton passed to the youngsters for the Junior Freeride Puntanera, the only Italian free-ski competition open to this age group. It was divided into three classes – Baby, Kids and Juniors - with the youngsters competing in any one of three disciplines - skiing, snowboarding or telemark - in a controlled environment. A Nutella party for everyone topped the fun off just as the first leg of the Vertical Combined Marco Da Pozzo was getting underway in the Piazza Angelo Dibona in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Staged in memory of the unforgettable mountaineer, guide and Cortina Scoiattolo, this open-to-all bouldering competition featured free climbing on an artificial wall with free practice and unlimited attempts in a 9o-minute timespan. The highlight of the

action, however, came on Saturday, April 5th, with the Freeride Challenge Punta Nera. The riders were whisked up to the top of Punta Nera by helicopter and then skied their way down through a spectacularly tough terrain dusted in a fresh covering of powdery snow, negotiating rocks and cliffs amongst other things, as they competed for the coveted trophy. Once all the competitors had arrived, there was lunch, a concert and the prizegiving ceremony at the Faloria refuge. So all that’s left now is to wait until next time and maybe sign up to compete too!

Quando e come è nato il turismo nella Vallata Ampezzana?

Ce lo racconta Rinaldo Menardi - erede della dinastia di albergatori dello storico Hotel Cristallo che ne ripercorre la storia, da quando divenne meta di villeggiatura della nobiltĂ austro-tedesca e dellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;alta borghesia inglese, francese e americana

99 avanti a una tazza di cioccolata fumante, in una Cortina ancora sopita in attesa dell’opening invernale, Rinaldo Menardi (erede della dinastia di albergatori che hanno costruito lo storico Cristallo) apre per noi il suo libro firme. E cita ricordi vissuti, o sentiti raccontare da nonni e genitori, che hanno ospitato nel corso degli anni il gotha dell’aristocrazia internazionale. Con tono pacato ci riporta al bel mondo cortinese e pare proprio di essere lì, spettatore stupito, e vedere sfilare quella moltitudine di ospiti illustri. «Mi piace parlare di Cortina facendo un salto indietro nel tempo. Il turismo vero da noi ha inizio alla fine dell’800, con la costruzione della linea ferroviaria Villaco-Brennero (1871) successivamente collegata a Dobbiaco (1878). In verità prima c’erano stati due viaggiatori inglesi, Gilbert e Churchill, uno scienziato e l’altro artista, che restarono abbagliati dalla bellezza dei nostri monti e pubblicarono il resoconto dei loro viaggi nel volume “The Dolomite Mountains”, scrivendo per la prima volta il nome che oggi è patrimonio Unesco. Lo stesso incantesimo accadde alla viaggiatrice inglese Amelia Edwards che ne cantò la maestosità nel suo “Untrodden Peaks and Unfrequented Valleys”, uscito nel 1873.

Ma la svolta vera per Cortina, dal punto di vista turistico, avvenne intorno al 1880, quando divenne meta di villeggiatura estiva e invernale della nobiltà austro-tedesca e dall’alta borghesia inglese, francese e americana, attratta dall’amore per la caccia, dalla possibile conquista di cime inviolate e dal desiderio di vacanza in uno scenario naturale senza pari. Cortina divenne una tappa obbligata del Gran Tour dei nobili rampolli di tutta Europa perché incarnava l’atmosfera romantica di quel periodo storico. E qui entrano in campo i miei nonni, o meglio “anche” i miei nonni. Per ospitare il bel mondo internazionale occorrevano alberghi maestosi, molto simili ai loro palazzi. Con questo spirito di grandeur venne costruito l’Hotel Cristallo, che aprì le sue porte nel 1901. Già i primi registri dell’hotel, che la mia famiglia ha conservato come tesori, portano firme di grandi personaggi.». Il racconto di Rinaldo è affascinante: un’analisi precisa e senza echi nostalgici, di un tempo meraviglioso ma non traducibile con l’oggi. Semplicemente di un periodo che “è stato”. «Dal Cristallo è davvero passato il mondo intero: Leone Tolstoj e le sue figlie per esemprio e molti americani eccellenti, in albergo dal 1902 al 1910, che alloggiavano da noi e venivano a Cortina per le battute di caccia di due nobildonne inglesi, Emily Howard Bury e Anna Power Potts, che qui avevano la loro maison de chasse.». Questo turnover di ospiti illustri contribuì a creare il mito di Cortina che passò, quasi indenne, anche attraverso le due guerre. Nasceva la passione per lo sci, il pattinaggio e l’hockey e nascevano le prime strutture per gli sport invernali: la prima funivia, le slittovie e la scuola di sci. Intanto il Cristallo si adeguava ai nuovi gusti sportivi costruendo campi da tennis che d’inverno si trasformavano in pista da pattinaggio e una piscina scoperta.

«I registri del Cristallo testimoniano che questo era uno dei luoghi favoriti dall’alta nobiltà italiana e internazionale: poi venne la Seconda Guerra, lo stop, e per fortuna la rinascita. La Dolce Vita cortinese riprese a fluire e con questa il Corso tornò ad animarsi del bel mondo. Arrivarono insieme agli ospiti anche gli sport d’elite: l’hockey e il curling e la Coppa D’oro delle Dolomiti e, con le Olimpiadi invernali del ‘56, Cortina si consacrò come una delle mete più mondane e frequentate degli anni ’60 e ’70». Proprio in quegli anni Leo e Ofelia Menardi passano il testimone al figlio Rinaldo, che apre al Cristallo il Monkey, un locale cult che accoglie la gioventù dorata del tempo.

The story behind the tourist transformation of Cortina’s Vallata, as told by Rinaldo Menardi, scion of the dynasty that owned the Hotel Cristallo.

He describes how the area became a holiday destination for the Austrian and German aristocracy and a prosperous upper middle class clientele from France, Britain and America

ver a steaming cup of chocolate in Cortina, basking in the calm before the start of the winter season, Rinaldo Menardi, a member of the dynasty of hoteliers that built the illustrious Cristallo hotel, treats us to a look at a time gone by. He relates his own memories, or events related by his grandparents and parents, people who over the years have hosted a who’s who of the international aristocracy. His quiet voice draws us back to the Cortina of the belle epoque, and he seems to be there in person, a dazzled spectator, watching the parade of glittering guests file past. “I love talking about Cortina, and taking a leap back in time. Tourism really started here in the late 19th century, with the completion of the Villach-Brenner railway (1871), which was then linked to Dobbiaco (1878). In fact, first of all there were two British travellers, Gilbert and Churchill, one a scientist and the other an artist. They were amazed by the beauty of our mountain landscape and published an account of their journey called “The Dolomite Mountains”, using for the first time the name of the area that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another British traveller, Amelia Edwards, was equally impressed, and wrote of their majesty in her “Untrodden Peaks and Unfrequented Valleys”, published in 1873. But the real turning point for tourism in Cortina occurred in around 1880, when it became a summer and winter holiday destination for the Austrian and German aristocracy and a prosperous upper middle class French, British and American clientele. These visitors were attracted by the hunting, the opportunity to conquer untouched peaks and a desire to spend a holiday amid unrivalled natural scenery. Cortina became an obligatory stop on the Grand Tour for rich young people from across Europe, as it embodied all the romantic charm of that period. That was when my grandparents come into the picture, or rather, they joined the trend. In order to welcome the international beau monde, it was necessary to build majestic hotels that resembled the guests’ own opulent homes. It was in this spirit of grandeur that the Hotel Cristallo was built, opening its doors in 1901. My family has preserved the early hotel registers with care, regarding them as great treasures, as they contain the signatures of many great figures.” Rinaldo’s story is fascinating, a precise, unsentimental account of a wonderful period that is hard to view through modern eyes.

It’s just a time that “used to be”. “The whole world passed through the Cristallo - Leo Tolstoy, and his daughters, for example, and many upper crust Americans stayed at the hotel between 1902 and 1910. They came to Cortina to attend the hunts held by two English aristocrats, Emily Howard Bury and Anna Power Potts, who had a hunting

Senza rimpianti, con meravigliosi ricordi e la consapevolezza di un mondo passato, congelato nelle foto in bianco e nero e fissato per sempre sulle pagine un po’ ingiallite dei nostri registri.».

Termina così la nostra chiacchierata, sul fiume di bellissimi ricordi. Le mode passano, i gusti cambiano: tutto muta. Una sola certezza rimane, salda come le montagne che l’abbracciano: Cortina, bella da togliere il fiato. Patrimonio anche per le generazioni che verranno.

Meanwhile the Cristallo adapted to the new enthusiasm for sports by building tennis courts that in winter were transformed into an ice skating rink and covered swimming pool. «The Cristallo’s registers show that this was a favourite destination for the Italian and international aristocracy. during the Second World War, but fortunately, after the war things took off again. Cortina’s dolce vita came roaring back to life and once again the world’s high society flocked back to the town. The sports favoured by the “elite” also arrived - hockey, curling and the Coppa D’oro delle Dolomiti. Then after the 1956 Winter Olympics Cortina became one of the most popular jetset destinations in the 1960s and 1970s”. It was at this time that Leo and Ofelia Menardi handed the baton over to their son Rinaldo, who opened a cult nightclub called the Monkey at the Cristallo, bringing in the gilded youth of the time. They had no regrets they were left with wonderful memories and the fact they had known a world that has now disappeared, fixed in black and white photos and captured for ever on the gently yellowing pages of our registers”. Our chat drew to an end, carried along by the flow of these spellbinding recollections. Fashions come and go, tastes change, nothing stays the same. Only one certainty remains, solid as the mountains that surround it - Cortina’s breathtaking beauty, a heritage to be handed down to the generations to come.

ra è una moda, un tempo invece era pura necessità. Le racchette (le ampezzane “ciaspes”) sono attrezzi antichi legati alla tradizione rurale della gente di montagna che le calzava per raggiungere anche in pieno inverno luoghi altrimenti inaccessibili.

Quelle contemporanee hanno una struttura molto leggera in alluminio. Sotto il piede, un’efficace rampone garantisce la presa anche sui terreni più difficili. Questa disciplina rappresenta il naturale proseguimento dell’escursionismo estivo. Un’ attività rillassante anche se faticosa che apre all’esplorazione dell’inverno innevato. Non sono richieste né caratteristiche tecniche né doti fisiche particolari: è uno sport adatto a qualsiasi età e non è necessario un grande allenamento. hey may be a fashion now, but at one time they were a vital aid to surviving winter. Snowshoes - known as “ciaspes” in the local dialect of Cortina - are ancient objects linked to the rural tradition of mountain people, who wore them in the depths of winter to reach places that the deep snow would otherwise make inaccessible places. Modern examples have a very light aluminium structure, and an effective crampon underneath provides grip even on

the most difficult terrain. This discipline is the natural sequel to summertime hiking as a relaxing, if tiring, activity that opens up the snow-covered winter landscape to exploration.

It does not demand special techniques or physical attributes - this sport is suitable for people of all ages and intense training is not necessary. To find out how many trails can be walked wearing snowshoes around Cortina, join the groups led by the member of the

Uno dei percorsi più suggestivi da fare con le racchette da neve ai piedi rimane quello della Grande Guerra, sulle crode sottostanti l’Averau e sul versante opposto al Faloria, che si snoda verso l’area Lagazuoi-5 Torri, tra i boschi e le trincee del conflitto italo-austriaco del 1915-18. Raggiunta la sella sull’Averau, una puntata è d’obbligo all’omonimo rifugio, diventato famoso per la cucina di

Weather conditions are never a problem on walks like this, you can go out in sunshine or thick snow -just choose your destination and take to the trail! One of the most attractive snowshoe routes dates back to the First World War, on the rock walls below the Averau and the slope opposite Faloria. It snakes towards the Lagazuoi-Cinque Torri among the woods and trenches of the Austro-Italian conflict of 1915-18. When you reach the pass on the Averau, a quick visit to the refuge of the same name - which owes its fame to the wonderful food prepared by Sandro and Paola Siorpaes

Per i Corti Comedy e Dintorni sono ammessi fiction di nazionalità italiana, di genere commedia nella più ampia accezione del termine, sia opere di altri generi (horror, thriller, fantascienza, poliziesco, drammatico) di durata non superiore ai 20 minuti, realizzati nel corso del 2013/2014. Per le altre sezioni, invece, si potranno inviare prodotti realizzati tra il 2014 e il 2015 e di durata non superiore ai 10 minuti. Le diverse categorie potranno iscrivere i loro lavori fino il 3 febbraio 2015 e quelli selezionati dalla direzione del festival verranno poi visionati da una giuria specializzata. Il miglior cortometraggio avrà un premio in denaro, oltre che altri riconoscimenti come quello alla migliore sceneggiatura, al migliore attore e alla

migliore attrice. A questi si aggiungerà anche il premio del pubblico presente in sala. Stesso dicasi per il miglior booktrailer, con premi da giuria e pubblico. Per le webseries, genere in costante crescita, vale il criterio di partecipazione applicato ai cortometraggi (presentazione sempre entro il 3 febbraio) con clausola che abbiano almeno tre episodi messi on-line dal 1 gennaio 2014 al 1 febbraio 2015, della durata massima di 10 minuti l’uno. Il comitato di selezione del festival, presa visione delle webseries ricevute e di quelle autonomamente reperite sul web, annuncerà cinque candidature in ciascuna delle seguenti categorie: migliore webseries, miglior regia, miglior attore, migliore attrice e migliore sceneggiatura. Per la sezione Instagram, si intende replicare il successo della precedente edizione. Il cinema si coniuga in chiave “social” e apre a tutti i video realizzati con account Instagram.

I requisiti? Devono essere video a tema “Food & Cinema” della durata massima di 15 secondi, caricati a partire dal 1 novembre fino al 3 febbraio 2015, con tema. E ovviamente non si deve dimenticare l’identificazione con l’hashtag #Cortocortina15.

La selezione dei video Instagram avviene a cura e a giudizio insindacabile della Direzione Artistica del Festival, che poi nominerà una Giuria composta da esperti nel settore. Grande riserbo invece sui nomi della giuria che sarà come sempre composta da professionisti del mondo del cinema, leggi registi, attori, giornalisti, critici cinematografici, produttori. www.cortinametraggio.it

ortinametraggio president Maddalena Mayneri has a whole slew of surprises up her sleeve for the next edition of the film festival . The first of these is that its competition, once again staged in collaboration with the Italian TV network Rai, will be open not just to comedy but to other genres including horror, science fiction and crime. The leitmotif, however, in all entries will be an ironic take on reality and the characters depicted. There are four sections: Corti Comedy e Dintorni (Comedy Shorts and Such Like), Booktrailers, Webseries and Instagram. Entering is simple: just go to www.cortinametraggio.it for further details.

However, we have a few pointers for directors of shorts and booktrailers.

The Corti Comedy section is reserved for Italian fictional shorts that are comedic in the broadest sense of the word: this can mean anything from classic comedy to other genres (horror, thriller, sci-fi, crime, drama) that takes an ironic look at reality and its characters. Films should be no longer than 20 minutes in length and must have been made in 2013/2014. Others can submit entries made between 2014 and 2015 and not more than 10 minutes in length. Entries for both categories close on February 3rd 2015. The films selected by the festival committee will then be shown to a specialist jury.

There is a money prize for the best short but there will also be other awards for best screenplay, best actor and best actress. Last but not least, is an audience prize awarded by the viewers at the screening.

The same applies to the best booktrailer for which there is a jury and a public prize. For the increasingly popular webseries, the rules are similar to those for the shorts (closing date February 3rd) but the series must include at least three episodes posted online between January 1st 2014 and February 1st 2015, each one not more than 10 minutes in length. Having watched the webseries received or on the web, the selection committee will announce five nominees in each of the following categories: best webseries, best director, best actor, best actress and best screenplay.

The organisers are hoping also to repeat the success of last year’s Instagram section. This social media section is open to all videos on the theme of “Food & Cinema” made using an Instagram account. Maximum length is 15 seconds, and videos must have been uploaded between November 1st 2014 and February 3rd 2015. Don’t forget the #Cortocortina15 hashtag either. The Instagram videos will be selected by the Festival’s Artistic Direction, the decision of which is final. It will then appoint a jury of experts from the sector. There is great secrecy about the names of the jury which will, as always, be made up of professionals from the world of cinema: directors, actors, journalists, film critics, producers.

o sci di fondo non è una semplice passeggiata nel bosco: è uno degli sport più tecnici e, a livello motorio, uno dei più completi. Che sia tecnica libera o tecnica classica poco importa, a Cortina ogni appassionato di sci nordico troverà la “sua” pista. Il comprensorio ampezzano fa parte del Dolomiti Nordic Ski, il carosello di sci di fondo più grande d’Europa, con 1.300 chilometri di piste raggiungibili con un unico skipass. I principianti (adulti e bambini) che volessero avvicinarsi a questo sport affascinante, ma anche chi sa già sciare e vuole perfezionare la tecnica, può rivolgersi a diverse scuole. Noi questa volta abbiamo testato la Morotto. Le lezioni si fanno al campo scuola del Fiames Sport Nordic Center, una struttura attrezzata dalla quale si dirama una fitta rete di sentieri per un totale di 78 km. I tracciati vanno dai facili e

ross-country skiing isn’t a simple walk in the woods: it is one of the most technical sports there is and, from a “motoric” point of view, one of the most complete. It doesn’t matter whether the technique is classic or skate skiing, devotees will find “their” track at Cortina. The ski area in the Ampezzo Valley forms part of Dolomite Nordic Ski, the largest cross-country circuit in Europe, with 1,300 kilometres of tracks that can be accessed with just one ski pass. Beginners (both adults and children) wishing to try out this fascinating sport, as well as those who have already done so but who would like to perfect their technique, have a selection of schools to choose from. This time we decided to go for the Morotto School. Lessons are held at the Fiames Sport Center, a well-equipped facility with a network of tracks covering 78 kilometres. They range from the completely flat and easy rings at the “school camp” and the “former airport,”

Curve, salite e discese tecniche dei 4 anelli (Km.2 - 3 - 5 - 7,5) compresi nel tracciato della pista agonistica “3 G” assicurano al fondista provetto e all’agonista, un terreno ottimo per misurare capacità fisica e tecnica o la possibilità di allenarsi in uno stupendo scenario ai piedi del Monte Pomagagnon.

E una volta diplomati fondisti, si parte per il Passo Tre Croci, per cimentarsi su diverse piste (fra le più tecniche della zona) che si snodano a lato della statale che porta al Lago Misurina, e dentro i boschi che ospitano i vecchi forti della Prima Guerra Mondiale.

They features bends, ups and down in the four rings (2, 3, 5 and 7.5 kilometres, respectively) including the competitive 3G track. This combination will ensure that both beginners and the more experienced cross-country skiers will find the right terrain for testing their physical and technical capabilities in a spectacular setting at the foot of the Monte Pomagagnon (mountain). And as soon as the beginners have completed their training, they can head to the Passo Tre Croci (the Three Cross Pass), to try out other tracks (the most technical in the area), which twist and turn alongside the road that leads to Lake Misurina, and the woods that are home to some old First World War fortresses. This area is also known as “La Scala del Meneghel” (Meneghel’s Stair).
