We bring our first year to a very fitting close with the Diamond issue.

It has been an incredibly intense year that began with the presentation of the first issue of THE ONE Yacht & Design at the Dubai Boat Show in February. We then travelled all the way to Singapore in May before continuing on to Monte Carlo last September. Right now, we are en route to Fort Lauderdale.

I have to admit that I am very satisfied on not one but two levels. Firstly, because of the development of our innovative magazine and the welcome the market has extended to it, and secondly because we have seen a very promising and, more importantly, real pick-up in the world gigayacht market over the last 10 months.

Each of our first four issues of THE ONE was named after a gemstone: Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire and, now, Diamond) and so everyone is asking me what the 2016 issues will be linked to.

The only answer I can give at present is that you’ll have to wait until January 2016 when the issue number 5 of THE ONE Yacht & Design comes out and reveals the leitmotif for the rest of the year.

Lastly, I would like to say a warm word of thanks to all of the companies and businesses - the yards, designers, fashion houses, car manufacturers or others besides - that believed in this new project and decided to place their faith in us. And also, of course, all the readers around the world that have kept us company throughout the year.

It is our duty (and our honour) to repay their, and your, faith as best we can. With a very special 2016!

Oceanco is one of the Netherlands’ newest but most internationally renowned yards. What is your strategy for success?

We credit our success with always trying to stay ahead of the curve. We look ahead, and expand on what we’ve done since our beginnings. We’ve forged our own standards for the modern world where ideas, materials and demands change not by the decade but by the year. In 2005, Oceanco made the decision to specialise in yachts for a very particular type of owner. The Y700-coded yachts—Alfa Nero, Seven Seas and Equanimity, etc. —were deliberately designed to be the ultimate in sophistication— technically, mechanically and aesthetically. 50 per cent of the yachts we’ve built appear on the “Top 100 worldwide largest yachts” list and we are confident all of the new launches to come will do too. We embrace market trends but never let them limit our innovation. We listen carefully to what our clients wish to achieve without any preconceived ideas to ensure that we fully understand every detail. Details make all the difference.

The market is demanding increasingly gigantic yachts: will there ever be a cut-off point?

We aren’t sure whether private yacht market requests will extend to actual cruise ships. However, we do expect the demand for 80-metre-plus yachts with ground-breaking designs and technology to increase. We are very much in tune with our market segment and, as a direct response,

have increased our facilities with a state-of-the-art dry dock to build yachts up to 140 metres.

Describe the typical Oceanco owner.

There is no one stereotype or cultural profile. Our clients are from around the world—all are highly knowledgeable professionals and leaders in their respective fields. They have the means to be demanding and they choose us. Several are repeat customers. They want their yacht to be built by Oceanco.

Oceanco works with the best yacht designers. Is there space for newcomers too?

Not only do we work with some of the most famous yacht designers (Nuvolari-Lenard, Sam Sorgiovanni, Espen Øino, Andrew Winch, Terence Disdale, to name but a few), we also have own expert in-house design team. We definitely feel there is room for new designers. In fact, we actively sponsor the “Young Designer of the Year Award” to encourage fresh new talent to join the superyacht industry. Perhaps one day, one of these new young designers will be helping create the next-generation Oceancos.

Oceanco and Vitters launched an 85-metre by Bill Tripp together this year. Tell us about that collaboration. Is this the start of a new sailing-focused era for you?

The 85-metre Aquijo is indeed the outcome of a remarkable cooperation between Vitters Shipyard and Oceanco. We had never built a sailing yacht before and Vitters had never built a yacht of that size before… so we both brought added value to the client. This novel approach to building is as unique as the yacht itself. And yes, Oceanco does have another sailing yacht.

has yielded the Spirit Royale 110’ motoryacht, a beautiful yet practical wooden build true to the yard’s sophisticated, classic style. The owner’s suite on the main deck has 200° panoramic views with double doors opening onto a private foredeck, a large dressing room with ample hanging space, vanity table, writing desk and a fitted sofa. Two double and two twin guest cabins are on the lower deck. A gorgeous full-height staircase topped by an octagonal glass atrium leads to the main saloon, lower saloon, wheelhouse and guest cabins.

In 2011, he started to look around. He wanted to

have something nearly ready, but he wasn’t satisfied with what was around him. Then I met with Sunrise Yachts.

In 2012, the owner signed the contract for a new build.

I was very lucky to have a lot of influence on the design of Irimari in terms of functionality. I’m an architect myself. I quit my job because I wanted to go on sea, so it was a good combination of skills: I know how a yacht functions and also the important aesthetic side. I briefed Espen the Focus Yacht Design for half an hour and they got the entire concept. Four weeks later they presented some hand-done sketches to the owner.

He really trusted in the team and my decisions. When his daughter and wife saw the first sketches, they just said “Yes” right away. The result is a yacht that is astonishing for its simplicity. I completely felt in love with the concept by Espen. Sunrise did a really brilliant job too, even though this was their first 63-metre: three times the size they’re accustomed to. The owner was speechless when he first saw the yacht too!

n 2005 we started working on a 45-metre for the shipyard: quite a radical concept, with numerous balconies and openings, inside-outside spaces. It received a lot of

attention from the press, but was never built as they couldn’t found a client for it.

Then they asked us for the GA of a new yacht. That project got delayed but in the meantime there was a client who wanted a yacht with much the same GA, and this became the yacht Irimari. The owner wanted a cost-effective yacht with a European design, only built in Turkey. From the outset they had requested large windows which would invite plenty of natural light into the interior spaces and provide unimpeded views out: this is something very close to my own heart. Numerous balconies and exterior spaces were worked into the design. The very large windows on the main deck level and the bridge deck lounge are quite impressive.

he changing world economy, different lifestyles and perceptions of well-being, an increasingly diverse and international client base, a burgeoning environmental conscience, etc.: all of these phenomena we’ve witnessed in recent years have also brought very rapid change to the nautical world. The way people use their boats has certainly changed as have design trends and styles, so designers and yards, already eager to adapt to clients’ tastes and needs, have equally rapidly developed a new generation of craft capable satisfying owners the world over. Naval platforms have grown both technically and size-wise with design solutions that are a concrete response to owners demanding exclusivity as a function of increasingly fine product quality across the board.

Emblematic of this is the work done by Zuccon International Project with CRN, two protagonists who, thanks to over 20 years’ experience in designing and producing large yachts of up to 100 metres,

remain a kind of “dream factory” as confirmed by the Superconero project, a yacht with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure the sale of which was recently announced.

“The Superconero and its Expedition and Dislopen Special Edition siblings,” said Gianni Zuccon, “are projects developed using the same naval platform.

They are entry level vessels for CRN’s well-heeled international clientele, a group increasingly interested in vessels of around 50 metres but, principally, below 500 GT. We designed them at the request of Lamberto Tacoli (CRN Chairman and CEO - ed), using the semi-custom

So we targeted our design work to offer three different 50-metres with specific characteristics and with at least three layout solutions for each for both the exteriors and interiors. That gives potential owners a whole diverse range of choices which will still respect safety, quality and comfort underway. The purchaser will also be delighted to find solutions that are normally only possible on larger craft.”

even a cursory look at Perseus^3’s 10,000-squaremetre-plus sail suite will tell you why. Described

by Doyle USA as the most unusual and challenging commission it has ever dealt with, it includes the A2 spinnaker which, at 2,602 m2, is the world’s largest sail. Doyle actually had to develop a special NayolnDyneema blend cloth capable of dealing with such huge dimensions. Underwater, Perseus^3 doesn’t mess about either with a keel blade that extends from 4.3 to 12.3 metres! All that power and technology is controlled by an 11-man crew whose number swells to 28 in competition. The owners and their guests only need to sit back and enjoy the ride on a yacht on which every last detail has been carefully honed with safety, relaxation and comfort in mind. There is generous sunning space, well away from the working areas, split between the splendid flying bridge, aft area and foredeck, where a (heated where necessary) lap pool with wave system turns into a huge sail pit when racing. The interior is focused on both family and charter use as attested by the full-beam master suite on the main deck which can be divided in two using sliding walls to create an extra cabin. The decor there (as in the four guest suites) is a modern take on traditional maritime styling. The furnishings were custom-built by Perini’s joiners, but the owner has added his own personal touches such as a Louis Vuitton trunk used as an occasional table, an antique Persian rug, a marble-topped dining table beautifully inlaid in precious stones, bronze statuettes of Perseus and Medusa and a large and very stunning head by Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj. Contrary to modern trends, the saloon is not open plan but made up of various areas divided by the furnishings to provide privacy without obstructing views. A low freeboard and gigantic windows give saloon occupants the feeling of skimming over the waves even when seated.

ne day Fabio Perini said: “We should think about something bigger, something different, because it’s time to overhaul the – successful – 56m series but stay under the 500 gross tonnage mark.” That was how the new 60m line came about. We’re very satisfied with the result and we’ve already built four examples, three are sold and one is ready in Turkey waiting for a buyer. To stay under the 500-ton mark, we embarked on a kind of volumetric “diet”, reducing the structure so that it’s 20 cm narrower all along the length which adds up to a lot of volume. We also emptied out the side walkways along the deckhouse. Perseus is a sporty version of the 60m designed for a naturally competitive, expert owner. The concept, structure, sail plan, controls and software were all developed in-house and so she is 100 per cent a Perini Navi creation, yet she is also highly personalised. This is an aluminium (hull and superstructure) and carbon (sail plan) yacht with a gigantic sloop rig that called for some serious team work. The keel was moved, for instance, to balance the sail plan while its deep blade (up to 12m), the narrow hull and twin rudders help boost performance under sail, yet The winches and furlers were designed and made from scratch by Perini. They are controlled by electric motors and sophisticated software, cutting tacking and gybing times by 75 per cent. still keep Perseus very stable and balanced.

Engineering was another big job: from 60m upwards, we’ve adopted new construction techniques which mean that the plant and engines in the engine room now sit on double base plates to reduce vibration and noise to virtually zero. We also developed a new series of under-deck furlers and winches controlled by electric motors which regulate the line speed to suit the loads amongst other things.

Lastly, we invented a simulator that – using a system of strain gauges that read both resistance and attrition – helps less expert skippers to use the hydraulic rudders which are subject to enormous loads.

T

he owner was an existing client and asked for a very comfortable yacht designed and fitted out for long cruises around the world but with no

pointless excess or frills. He’s an expert sailor and knows all the problems of “forced” cohabitation aboard but also had chartering in mind. So he opted for an untrendy but functional layout with the result that the saloon isn’t open plan. To avoid creating a cave-like effect though, there are no dividing walls in the saloon, just groups of furnishings, so everyone can have privacy without losing visuals or a feeling of space. The full-beam master suite was designed using the same principle. It can be divided in two using sliding walls to create an extra cabin while the “his” (dark marble) and “hers” (light marble) bathrooms are separate. The interior is very much in tune with classic maritime tradition but also gives it a contemporary twist: wainscoting, lots of teak, walnut, muted colours with blue accents and leather sofas that impart a warm, lived-in feeling and will only look better as the years go by.

In classic Perini fashion, all corners are nicely rounded, the walkways safe, the spaces beautifully balanced, the handrails plentiful and the electronics this generation (LED lights, VSAT broadband as requested by the owner), while vibration and noise levels have been cut to virtually nothing (44 dB at 14 knots). Even the crew mess (with laundry, ironing area etc.) is very comfortable: the old adage that “a happy crew makes a happy owner” still holds true. The huge amount of natural light aboard Perseus is another thing that is quite uncommon on a yacht of this size. It’s thanks to the enormous

windows that allow it to literally flood into the saloon and which makes life aboard much more pleasant and relaxing. The owner also added some of his personal possessions, including a bronze of Perseus gazing out to sea. There are also two gorgeous 6-metre jet tenders (one a hybrid) custom-built by Constellation Tender.

M

egayacht owners have changed in recent years: they no longer just want to cruise, they want to race too, and Perini has adapted by building increasingly fast and

more high performance craft. The new 60m series is the perfect example of that. We have huge belief in this project as it encapsulates all our designers’ and technicians’ experience. In fact, we began on-spec construction of 60-metre aluminium hull some time back so we could offer the market a craft with a shorter delivery time. Perseus^3’s owner didn’t just want to compete, however: he wanted to win. The fact that he chose a 78-metre mast that prevents the yacht from going down the Panama Canal says it all about his intentions. But he wants to do it in a boat capable of circumnavigating the globe in the finest of comfort and safety. The challenge we set ourselves was far from simple: on the one hand, we had to had to reduce weight to guarantee good enough performance in light breezes and, on the other, guarantee efficiency in terms of times and safety. But it seems like we achieved just that: in 13 knots of real wind, we managed to sail upwind at an angle of less than 40° at a speed of 13 knots. During the Perini Navi Cup, Perseus^3 also made 17 knots in 20-21 knots of apparent wind. That’s a really great result for a 60m boat with a displacement of almost 550 T. Naturally enough, the sail plan was developed to guarantee this standard of performance and Doyle created some of the sails specifically for Perseus^3. These include the A2 spinnaker which measures 2,200 square metres and is the largest in the world. Despite this imposing and, more importantly still, powerful sail plan, Perseus^3 is an extraordinarily well-balanced yacht, thanks in part to modifications made below the waterline. So much so, in fact, that her helmsman will always have everything under control. For the last few years we’ve been developing an electronic system that simulates rudder resistance providing the helmsman with realistic feedback and wheel feel in real time.

Art lovers will travel the world to find just the right piece be it classical, modern

or contemporary. However, the galleries in Mayfair are usually a solid bet and IDs dispatched by wealthy yacht owners, regularly lay seize to their private viewing rooms and sales. The British capital is the centre of the fine art world and an endless source of rich pickings. In fact, the legendary Italian Tornabuoni Arte opened its London gallery in October with a Lucio Fontana show. “After Florence, CransMontana, Milan, Portofino, Forte dei Marmi and Paris, London’s time has come.

iancarlo Morelli is a brilliantly talented chef. If he were a colour, he’d be a red or a lime yellow, a bit

like the glasses he wears to mask a pure soul. Red like the passion he pours into everything he does, lime yellow to exorcise the natural reserve that makes him unique.

Morelli’s no-nonsense Bergamo roots are clear from that natural reserve and unassuming character. However, they are also there in his frankness which can be a little unnerving at times. Such as when he remarked on our first meeting that he couldn’t handle journalists that rave and babble on about food. His prowess in the kitchen has been rewarded by a Michelin star. Morelli spent years wandering the globe before finally settling in Brianza in the North of Italy in 1993. He opened his Osteria del Pomiroeu (the name is taken from the word for orchard in the local dialect) in an old courtyard in historic centre of Seregno where he began creating menus firmly rooted in the local area and its produce but with an international breadth. Rice is probably his favourite ingredient, and tasting one of Morelli’s risottos is like travelling through time and indeed all over the world. It’s a delightful culinary roller-coaster of a ride. Every dish is a whole new discovery, a poetic idea that emerges crisply, velvety or delicate depending on the chef’s metre as he composes the likes of Blue Lobster in Canino Single Cultivar Olive Oil with confit of orange and fennel. “Simple but effective.

You just have to steam the lobsters at 120° for six minutes and once that is done, remove them from their shells. Then you slice the orange, put it in a vacuum bag with its juice, the sliced ginger and salt, and steam at 65° degrees for five minutes. Slice the fennel thinly, place it too in a vacuum bag with the white wine, salt, orange rind and a pinch of ascorbic acid, then steam at 65° for 15 minutes. To make the orange gel, dissolve a tablespoon of potato and corn starch in the cold juice and then add 50g of water. Cook for about 10 minutes stirring continuously. Allow to cool. We are now ready to plate up the lobster with the soncino salad, the sliced orange, prepared fennel, orange gel, Maldon sea salt, dehydrated fennel, oil, shoots and a drizzle of oil. One last word of advice: serve with a Nosiola Fontanasanta 2011 Vigneto delle Dolomiti IGT Elisabetta Foradori. And there you have it: voila!”

To return to Morelli’s story, we need to take a step back in time: to the culinary games the family shared to the sacrifices involved in researching and developing, honing his talents around the world and then his encounters with other great chefs from whom he has learned and to whom he has also given. But Morelli is a man of more than one passion. He adores golf and skiing and is now an adviser to the Association of Golfing Restaurateurs and an ambassador for the Chef’s Cup in Alta Badia. The sea, however, is his other great love and whenever he can, he takes his beloved Pomiroeu beyond the confines of Brianza. In summer, he goes to the Phi Beach on the Costa Smeralda. However, he is “taste director” at the Orsa Maggiore in Forte dei Marmi. Morelli also adores art and his restaurant is adorned with works by established and emerging artists. Israeli food photographer Dan Lev’s Colorfood project for Expo 2015 features coloured close-ups of chefs “getting their hands dirty” as they create edible art works. Morelli’s, of course, are a vibrant saffron yellow!

Laura Sessa opted for a smart yet practical contemporary look with more formal, “neutral” zones alternating with bright colourful ones, mixing straight lines, spirals and drapes in a kind of perfect chaos that will prove endlessly fascinating for guests

tender and the water toys. The rest of the main deck offers a saloon aft of the dining area and forward, the owner’s quarters. The lower deck accommodates the three guest cabins, the engine room, the galley and the crew area. Aside from a second large deck area (which can be either air conditioned or heated at will), the upper deck has a second saloon with grand piano and two VIP suites plus the captain’s cabin and hightech bridge. The lounge on the sun deck is a quirky touch: it’s enclosed but still wonderfully bright and can open out on both forward and aft: it can work as a corridor, a living area or even a cinema. Entrusted to long-time Amels collaborator, Laura Sessa, Event’s interiors mirror the movement of the exterior design to delicious effect but just enough as pastel colours balance the whole look beautifully. There are different, strong colours for every saloon, lounge or cabin aboard with luxe Louro Faia paired with anigre, Oregon pine and cathedral oak. Marble is used in all the bathrooms.

The many deluxe designer brands used aboard include Hervé Van der Straeten, while the silk carpets are by Tai Ping. Apart from some armchairs by Promemoria, Sessa designed most of the furniture which then was made by Metrica. The former left no stone unturned and even the choice of textiles was clearly meticulous and varied with cool, fresh cotton and linen from the Designers Guild, Nobilis and Loro Piana alternating throughout the yacht, while the deck furnishings are the work of Glyn Peter Machin. Not surprisingly, a yacht as sophisticated and brimming with personality as Event could not possibly be expected to make do with just any old RIB for to-ing and fro-ing ashore, so Tim Heywood went back to the drawing board and sketched out the lines of a fabulous limousine tender (subsequently built by Yachtwerft Meyer) that mimics her lines in miniature. Classy is as classy does.

started the project with an axe bow, a very functional, if brutal, concept which has been used successfully on commercial vessels.

I wanted to take this form and develop it for use on a yacht. I have a reputation for using curved, athletic, feminine forms and developing this vertical bow into the arcing profile I created, was a logical development for me. I then decided to call it the “scimitar bow”. I prepared two design drawings: one with a conventional “clipper” bow and one that was exactly the same design but with the “scimitar bow”.

The effect was to totally change the whole look of the yacht, making her more radical and unique. The Amels team were initially rather shocked but later stated that the more they looked at the design, the more they liked it. It was quite a leap of faith for the yard to adopt this design concept, go forward with the engineering development and then take the ultimate step to begin production before finding a client! Each yacht I design is not only a new step forward but is also a culmination of all that I have experienced and achieved in the past.

My work has been a continuous development which, I believe, has led to a continuing improvement in my designs. My goal is to create an

original and unique yacht design that will stand out from the crowd and remain in this forward position for many years to come. If I achieve that I will be very happy! For me the exterior was the most demanding: knowing that this design needed to appeal to a demanding client before I had met him! Event’s owner joined the project a year into the build and requested an enclosure to the sun deck for a games and cinema room. This we readily added and, I believe, it improved the overall function of this deck. It was a great pleasure to incorporate this client’s wishes, a knowledgeable motoryacht owner who had a clear idea of what he wished to achieve and had, by this time, voted for our project with his wallet! I am extremely fond of wing stations: from here you can look forward along the sides of the hull and see the subtle change in its form and look aft to see both its curvatures and those of the superstructure.

I know this can be different for different people, but for me, after being bewitched by the Limo Tender, stunned by the pure lines of the mothership, as you step aboard, you feel the quality, from the craftsmanship of the solid teak decks to the mirror finish of the paintwork and the welcoming smiles of the crew. Event in a single word? “Confident” – in every way!

he owner was an existing client of ours. We know each other well and that most definitely made the decisions easier during our various

meetings. He was also very proactive when it came to the development of the yacht, just as it should be. The owner is, after all, also the user of the end product, be it a villa, a boat or a private jet. Our job is to guide the client and translate the things they love and want to have aboard into harmonious reality.

In the case of Event, the owner wanted an elegant, modern-classic yacht that still had every comfort. There are always many, many sources of inspiration.

We definitely had input from the client and we were very keen to create a boat that was in tune with the exterior lines. I got to know Tim Heywood with Amels at the start of the Limited Edition 171 (2005) and I think he’s a fascinating, very able architect but he’s never pushy. A genuine innovator! I have always had a fantastic working relationship with him. Tim is very open to dialogue and changes, and both of us are mad about the Limited Edition 199 as there is great synergy between the interior and the exterior: the clean, linear details make every deck very modern and masculine, while bright colours with pastel tones balance everything. I opted for guest cabins of various sizes with a proper VIP cabin on the bridge deck at the owner’s specific request.

The dining area is separate from the saloon because that is more efficient for the staff. The sun deck is an incredibly liveable area for a whole variety of situations: in summer, the big glass doors open out giving the feeling that the interior and exterior are one, while in winter or when it is very hot, they close, creating a large and very liveable cinema space. Even the busy décor was a common choice and I think it is a good thing to alternate spaces with different styles and colours to stimulate the eye and brighten the soul!

The master suite completely mirrors the owner’s requirements: very large spaces and excellent outside views. I wouldn’t be able to say what my favourite area is. It’s like asking me what my favourite yacht or design is – it’s just impossible to say. The whole boat is a creature I saw born and grow up!

vent marks a threefold philosophy for Amels within the Limited Editions range. First, we carefully planned her in terms of size with

her volume of just over 1,100 gross tons, while technically we wanted to deliver an advance with the tender recovery system. Third, and perhaps most importantly, we wanted to push the envelope in terms of her aesthetics, particularly with Tim Heywood’s “scimitar bow” and the fact that, from a distance, she has a signature look but then, when you zoom in, she has many more fine details. The Limited Editions range in general has been incredibly successful – we have sold 30 yachts since the concept was introduced in 2005 with 23 already launched. Two 199s have already been delivered with a third currently in build. I think this shows that the Limited Editions range is an innovation in the 50-metre-plus segment and that we have a very clear product proposition. Our heritage is obviously important, but we are also able to deliver a tremendous amount of value with the Limited Editions yachts: top quality yachts for a much better price than a full custom build and with a very attractive delivery time of approximately two years. We have also built an unparalleled reputation for delivering the yachts on time and on budget, and that’s what owners like.

Event also demonstrates another important characteristic of the Amels philosophy, which is that the design is not set in stone. Event’s design also showcases several other innovations – the layout with the tender garage forward means the crew can be pretty much invisible, which is nice for a 60-metre yacht. It also means that the lower deck guest cabins can be linked directly to the beach club aft, while the two VIP cabins on the bridge deck are unusual for a 60-metre yacht.

The duo’s projects have spanned the architecture spectrum from the Bulgari Hotels (Milan, London, Bali) to Premium passenger lounges at the new Qatar Airport, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Milan and the apartments currently under construction at the new Elbphilharmonie complex in Hamburg, Germany. Each one has its own individual identity because the contexts are so different with nature and mood taken as the primary sources of inspiration. This was how the studio approached this commission in the nautical arena. It decided to go against current trends and created a 34-metre for a Scottish owner that is a new twist on vintage yacht styling cues. “Rather than transferring the opulent minimalism of a Manhattan penthouse to boats, as I’ve seen happen before, we salvaged nautical interior design tradition,” explains Patricia Viel, who did the project.

I love life aboard and I get out on the water whenever I have the chance. But I find the literal application of terrestrial design to boats irritating. The nautical sector has its own very strong cultural identity. It has produced paradigms of ergonomics, economy of use, material performance, space optimisation, all of which have been inherited by the building industry. It’s not interesting to treat yachts as if they were buildings on terra firma. What is interesting is the work done on (Prada

The Naval Architect Andre Hoek

T

he basic concept of the Truly Classic series is semiseries, semi-custom, which saves time and reduces the amount of decisions a client has to make compared to a fully custom boat. It also makes sense financially, due to the economies of scale. Clients choose a basic hull concept that doesn’t change and can see and feel the yacht for themselves, even trial sail it. Atalante is the largest yacht in the range at the moment and has been designed so that her layout is flexible. For instance, Atalante’s main saloon is in between the owner’s cabin and the main deckhouse but the TC127 is designed so that you can also switch the positions of the guest cabins and the main saloon. We also looked into a ketch rig instead of a sloop and an aft owner’s cabin, for instance. Overall, Atalante is a timeless hull with moderate sheer line, highly detailed exterior styling and vast cockpit areas. All the sailing, helming and winch handling is from the aft cockpit, giving the main cockpit area more privacy for guests especially during charters.

Atalante’s owner wanted the wheel in the aft cockpit with the aft deckhouse for navigation when the boat is sailing.

He specifically wanted a yacht that could sail long distances in the Pacific or other remote areas. Furthermore he wanted to use the yacht for bucket regattas and superyacht cups, so she has a relatively deep fixed keel with a wide bulb giving her a good edge upwind. The decision to increase her length from 115 to 127ft enabled us to add a separate laundry area as well as a starboard flex cabin that works as a captain’s office during owner use and doubles as a single cabin for a stewardess during charters. Atalante is also a good example of the Hoek Classic above and modern underwater configurations we started developing in 1986. More than 100 33 to 210 ft craft have been built to this concept and these are the yachts we are most passionate about.

A

talante’s interior styling is very similar to the owner’s previous yacht, a Truly Classic 90, which was also done by our office. We had a close working relationship with him.

He wanted a warm, functional interior in line with the outside of the yacht: in other words, timeless and classically styled but with the use of modern materials. I feel the interior and exterior styling blend very well, both in style and atmosphere.

Their time periods are historically quite similar, creating a sense of holistic unity. Generally speaking, attention to detail and sourcing of the materials, such as the Sapeli Mahogany used throughout, was top of our list of priorities. Atalante’s interior is designed both for cruising and for charter so the steering wheel is in the aft cockpit, creating privacy for guests in the centre cockpit. The interior layout changed a little bit during the design process - we added a section of approximately 10 feet to incorporate an extra crew cabin/ captain’s office as well as a separate laundry. The main saloon

is aft of the main deckhouse and connected to the owner’s cabin, just aft of that. As far as we know, this is the first time that this has been done. The reason behind it is that when the owner is sailing without guests, he basically can have half the boat to himself. The full-beam main saloon becomes an extension of his cabin, creating a huge suite. This is my favourite part of the interior as it can be used by the owners, but also to host parties. The overall result is stunning. The interior looks very large for a yacht this size and every inch of the space has been utilised. This can be seen in small things such as the vanity table with integrated mirrors and the cutlery storage drawer in the main deckhouse, among other things. It is also very bright, thanks to the white upper panelling and lots of natural light.

H

aving sailed his previous 90ft Atalante for several years, I believe that the owner was ready for something larger that offered

somewhat more space and comfort. Also, his crew were an important part of the success of the first Atalante and he wanted to make sure that there was sufficient space and service areas to allow them manage the larger yacht and larger crew. The previous Atalante had been an enjoyable build experience and a successful cruising yacht, so when the time came for a new build the owner elected to largely bypass the usual bidding process and go directly to the same team that produced the original yacht. That was principally MCM, Hoek Design and Claasen Shipyards but also some important suppliers such as North Sails and Offshore Spars. The owner was very closely involved in the design of the yacht, both inside and out.

Systems development was largely by the build team but also with the owner’s input. Simplicity and reliability were important factors, as well as the need for comfortable spaces for owner and crew. The crew were fully consulted from the start of the project and were an integral part of the build team. The owner is more than happy with the new yacht - the build quality, spaces on board, interior decoration and her overall look and feel.

He is particularly happy with the yacht’s performance under sail, which is fast and balanced. Atalante was on display at the Monaco Yacht Show.

Principle cruising grounds will be Mediterranean and Caribbean with the capability to travel further afield at any point. An occasional superyacht regatta will also be part of the programme.

t is always a great opportunity to build a second yacht for a repeat client. When a client gives the order to build a yacht, it’s

about trust and confidence. For us, it meant the client enjoyed the first TC90 Atalante to the maximum, and was convinced about the yard’s capabilities, which made him decide to build the new 127ft Atalante with the same team - Claasen Shipyards, Hoek Design, Nigel Ingram of MCM - and suppliers. Our goal is to have clients who are ambassadors for the yard - potential new clients appreciate the fact we’ve established such a relationship with the owner of Atalante.

As we had known the owner and the crew of Atalante for several years, we knew their expectations during the build of the new Atalante 127ft, which gave us the opportunity to maximise the construction of this new yacht to their specific wishes.

They both shared their experiences with the first TC90ft Atalante, and this input helped optimise the new 127ft Atalante.

We have also built more than 30 yachts with Hoek Design, mostly Truly Classics, which are also doing very well in the superyacht cups. However, during sea trials for each new yacht, our technical team checks what can be improved to optimise the next yacht from a performance and technical point of view, so we are always improving our yachts. Future TC 127s will have the same hull shape as Atalante, but the interior layout and styling can be changed as every Truly Classic is a custom design. For example, the guest cabins could be located aft of the deckhouse instead of in the front.

Two helm stations between the two deckhouses can be installed also, which means the winches will move forward, creating a more private area for the owners in the aft cockpit. A retractable keel instead of a fixed keel is another possibility.

Fulvia Tissi’s career path has

been driven by a sense of keen curiosity and discovery.

It’s no coincidence that she crossed paths with Carl Vaar, a hugely experience luxury yacht captain, a meeting that produced her latest collaborative effort: Vaar, a specialist furnishing and living solutions brands for superyachts of which Tissi is art and creative director.

The brand takes its inspiration from the Modernist movement of the 1920s and 30s (simple, cool lines executed with very precise materials). Vaar’s style is still quite eclectic, marrying functionality, simplicity, while extreme elegance is the focal point.

The secret to reconciling these three factors starts, according to Tissi, with the materials themselves. “My choices in that regard are influenced by a strong connection with tradition but also broaden out into new, much more innovative possibilities. I started with teak but then it became difficult to find the high quality stuff. So I currently use a lot of mahogany. It’s very satisfying and excellent for a variety of finishes. Oiled mahogany, for instance, is stunning both solid and as a veneer on curved surfaces.

I like combining metals with wood too, such as brushed steel and untreated oak.

I have a real weakness for titanium which weighs around 40 per cent less than

There is a growing trend for untreated materials among owners, and also unusual combinations. “Of late I have noticed that certain unusual trends are particularly popular: untreated oak and brushed steel.”

But bespoke is second nature to Vaar: “Custom work is one of our strengths and really a prerequisite of anything of value and so a large part of what we do.”

Speaking of the challenges posed by bespoke work, Tissi simply says: “The greater the effort, the greater the satisfaction!”

he word “megayacht” conjures up very particular visions of luxury. However, certain

other vessels are powerhouses of technology whose exclusivity relates to their construction as well as their onboard solutions. This Limousine Tender is one such beauty. The concept is by Vripack but she is being built by Xtenders, the Dutch yard headed by Olympic sailor Herbert Dercksen which specialises in high tech, high spec tenders with composite hulls built to the standards of the most high-performance sailing yachts.

That means carbon-fibre, pre-preg, of course, to guarantee superior mechanical properties, as well as an extremely light hull to the undeniable benefit of performance and fuel consumption. More the sort of build we’d expect from a very sophisticated yacht than a tender. o mark the 10th anniversary of the launch of its iconic haute horlogerie Big Bang collection, Hublot has created a spectacularly unique limited edition. Let’s start with the price tag: $1 million per watch, with just a tiny number being made. The column-wheel chronograph movement driving said timepieces is also a cut above, as hinted in its Unico moniker and the fact that it was developed and is made entirely in-house. Aesthetically, the watch is nothing short of an haute joaillerie

masterpiece. Diamonds are the order of the day and adorn the entire case in a variety of settings and cuts. The overall effect is deliberately and sumptuously baroque.The impact is further heightened by no less than three different and highly complex setting techniques: invisible setting, Clou de Paris setting and rail setting. Also, for the meticulouslyrealised Big Bang “10 Years� Haute Joaillerie, Hublot has created its first bezel set with invisible inverted trapeziums which is an extremely challenging achievement as there is nothing at all between one baguette and the next. The Greeks believed that diamonds were fragments of stars fallen from the sky, or the tears of the gods.

According to one legend, they form the perimeter of an inaccessible valley in central Asia, guarded by hawks.

Or the tip of one of Cupid’s arrows, with the magical power to inspire burning passion in their victims, leading to the idea of the diamond as the eternal symbol of love. Rare and precious because only a few have survived their journey from the depths of the Earth to the surface when, billions of years ago, the elementary forces of heat and pressure brought about the miraculous transformation of common carbon into diamonds. Not legend, but cold, hard fact.

Whatever the case, between legend and knowledge, there can be no doubt about one thing – in the words of the song sung in 1953 by the sexiest, most explosive blonde in movie history, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”.

Her hair was brown, too, when she was born, but was later transformed into an irresistible platinum. Pure coincidence?

he Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is much more than just a yacht club.

encounter owners of rare sophistication, where the principles of haute hôtellerie go hand in hand with gentlemen’s yachting and the Italian lifestyle.

It is no easy task to keep this complex organisation machine working smoothly, particularly as it now runs 365 days a year after the opening of the winter clubhouse on Virgin Gorda. This is why, as Club Commodore, I take a business management-style approach, assigning specific duties to competent individuals. Much has changed since the 1970s, when His Highness the Aga Khan had the incredible vision to transform this marvellous little corner of the world into a sailing and yachting paradise. The philosophy that inspired his vision remains the same, however. In fact, it has been brilliantly “exported” to the new YCCS winter base at Virgin Gorda. The Clubhouse in Porto Cervo was completely redesigned at the start of the new
