ear Readers,

there is no denying that we live in a very complex world and that the events of this present tragic period in history do not make it any easier. That said, life goes on and with it, all of the various aspects of the experience of being a human on this planet. The nautical world too is continuing on its course, with increasingly positive news pouring in from the international building industry. Research too is doing its bit to offer surprising possibilities for the future. Just by way of example, look at the research done by Maersk, a massive company involved mainly in commercial shipping, into creating electric charging buoys for ships spread about the sea. These use renewable energy and mean that boats with electric powertrains can top up on clean energy without needing to go into port. This has resulted in Maersk founding a new company, Sillstrom, which will begin tests this coming autumn with the first buoys going into service near an offshore wind farm. The solution may, in the not-too-distant future, be used by giga and megayachts to further extend their ranges. And what about the new construction materials that are allowing designers and engineers to give vent their creativity in exciting new ways? The Aluminium Issue (no. 30) continues our voyage of discovery of our sector’s wonderfully unique achievements and the new peaks of excellence it and others besides are reaching. A hug to you all and happy reading with our QR codes!

[ FIVE QUESTIONS TO... ]

UGO PELLEGRINO CEO OF ARCADIA YACHTS by Désirée Sormani

We have recently witnessed a boom on the yacht market with yards almost doubling their order books. But what is the outlook for the near future given the current tragic scenario unfolding internationally? Like the rest of the sector, our yard is flourishing at the moment. So much so that in 2021, we recorded revenues of 20 million euro and are expecting to get up to 25 million. There is a risk that the international situation will have a negative impact on the sector, but I don’t think it will have any repercussions on our brand in the immediate future because we don’t have a commercial relationship with Russia. We have also been quite farsighted in terms of raw materials procurement with agreements in place with our suppliers and good warehouse stockpiles. Where does Arcadia Yachts fit on the world yachting scene? Our main market until now has been the Mediterranean but we are adopting an internationalisation strategy aimed at expanding the brand into the Middle East, the US and Australia. When the new yachting season started, we also began working with Turkey on foot of a partnership request from a local dealer there. What are Arcadia’s strengths? Design, quality, technology, reliability… Our greatest strength is the success the brand’s new concept of conviviality and wellness has enjoyed. It

16

embraces design with sophisticated yet simple and instantly recognisable lines, quality thanks to partners with decades of experience, technology with the use of solar panels and new generation heat-insulating glazing, and lastly, reliability.

Which lines are most successful and why? Both our lines are extremely successful: the A line, which has a signature large cockpit that runs into the saloon, a sector-benchmark master cabin, and extensive solar panelling, is probably the brand’s most iconic range. The more recent Sherpa line, on the other hand, has large volumes, large cockpits with a water-skimming terrace, a convertible skylounge, extensive solar panels, and s higher top speed. Our success is down to the fact that we offer a different onboard lifestyle which reflects owners’ growing desire to share and to have a connection with the surrounding environment, well away from frenetic, hyperactivity. What new strategies and other craft do you have coming in the near future? We are overhauling the range and will soon be launching a model of between 95’ and 100’ that will be presented in 2023. From a production perspective, we want to keep applying solutions and technologies from other sectors. On the commercial side of the business, we are working on new agreements with various representative brands.

GIAN PAOLO MIGLIACCIO CEO OF ETHIMO by Marta Bernasconi

Above, Gian Paolo Migliaccio with Francesca Confidati, Brand Identity Manager for Ethimo Founded in 2009 in the province of Viterbo, Ethimo is a young company where the family’s long experience in the outdoor sector is joined by new managerial skills. Its products, created in collaboration with international designers, are available in over seventy countries.

18

How does Ethimo express its idea of relaxation and outdoor living? All our collections close links with the natural world. The shapes, textures and colours are inspired by the harmonious contrasts so typical of the Mediterranean landscapes, expressing an idea of relaxation that’s most at home in open-air spaces. The details reflect the quality of the contemporary design and a constant endeavour to combine function and aesthetics. What types and materials interest you most? We choose materials for their technical and functional characteristics, their sustainability and their power to create a visual and tactile sensation of natural comfort and elegance. That’s why we emphasise high-end wood from FSC-certified sources with managed regrowth, recyclable synthetic fibres and environmentally-respectful paints and varnish. Every material is carefully selected and then worked using a combination of traditional artisanal techniques and cutting-edge technology. How is the world of high-end outdoor furnishings developing? The pandemic has reaffirmed the crucial role of the home and all other living spaces, and the outdoor environments have increased in importance. In line with the new requirements that have appeared over the past two years high-end furnishings must fulfil a promise of performance quality and an aesthetic where harmoniously blended shapes, colours and textures create a link with the landscape to create warmth and balance in a context of sustainability. What’s your involvement in the yacht-building sector? We have solid relationships with some of the world’s biggest yacht-building yards, large cruise companies and private owners. The materials we choose, like teak, metal and fabrics, are designed and processed to enable them to tolerate even the most extreme climate conditions. Our collections offer a wide range of solutions that answer the requirements of the nautical sector. We also work with yacht designers on custom and bespoke projects, applying our expertise to every yacht’s individual elements. Can you tell us anything about what you’re going to present in 2022? Now the international shows have started up again we want to highlight a fluid, modular outdoor living concept where a relationship with nature is expressed through welcoming shapes and select materials like teak, enamelled stones, artisanal mosaics, white marble and soft fabrics with striking colours and patterns. The chairs have generous proportions and transform into lounge beds at a touch. The dining sets are perfect for entertaining guests.

[ AGAINST THE WIND ]

THE CE MARK EVERYTHING HAS ITS LIMITS by Andrea Pezzini, CEO & Co-Founder of Floating Life

W

hen COVID put the brakes on the industry, many if not all yards overhauled their production lines with the result that we are now seeing more and more large yachts with the CE Mark. I have never had anything against exploiting the regulations for the benefit of either yard or client, but I do think there has to be a limit to everything. The limitations of the CE Mark are well known to builders as it was intended for small yachts. It has serious shortcomings in terms of safety because it was designed for craft that were not high performance or long-range. But there is many a slip between intention and reality unfortunately. Today, certain yachts with a “real” length of well over 24 metres with extremely powerful engines and bluewater capabilities just don’t tick the safety boxes for this kind of use. I am not saying they are illegal – they wouldn’t be awarded certification if they were. But they are definitely treading a fine line if not going over it. I will take one example from a yard that will remain nameless. It presented a yacht of almost 30 metres (real LOA) which didn’t have to pass a stability test at sea but

instead was approved on theoretical calculations. It didn’t need fire dampers to cut off ventilation in case of a fire in the engine room and could have just one bilge pump. These examples put me in an embarrassing situation when, as a technician, I went to visit the yacht on behalf of a client. Because I am old school, I would not have accepted them, but the yard countered me by waving the regulations under my nose and had every right to do so. Of course had I been involved at the contract stage rather than the delivery one, I would probably have asked for some simple modifications to be made. I would also probably have had to pay extra for those but as far as I am concerned they should be compulsory anyway for the sake of both owner and crew. So, yards, please stop bending the rules for the sake of very small savings. Once upon a time, as technicians we spoke proudly of “good practice and good sense”, knowing that we were expert, conscientious builders that respected the sea and those that sail it for passion and profession.

Clearly, these are words shouted against the wind… though I continue to hope that someone will read and heed them…

Designed entirely by Hydro Tec, this on spec beauty nimbly encapsulates the Italian skill and craftsmanship that only a yard with huge experience can such a hugely experienced yard can offer. “For Veloce’s construction our yard drew on a century’s experience in shipbuilding and its own innovation-centred approach. – commented Paolo Duò who is both President of Cantiere Navale Vittoria and Vittoria Yachts, and the scion of the family that has owned the yard since 1927. The Veloce 32 RHP has all the signature safety, efficiency and innovation of the Fast Patrol Vessels that Vittoria supplies to leading navies worldwide. The 32m tri-deck has a beam of 7.2m, captivatingly individual lines, a plumb bow and raised gunwale, courtesy of Hydro Tec. A semi-displacement hull and twin 1,900 hp Mans yield a top speed of 20 knots. “Our goal” – adds Michele Zorzenon, Managing Director of Vittoria Yachts - “is to meet the needs of owners who want a real vessel built from metal without having to compromise on the cruising speeds typically offered by GRP craft”. Veloce’s chicly contemporary interiors seem to meld with the world outside, while Poltrona Frau furnishings and leather trim exude sophistication. www.vittoriayachts.it

The new beauty’s spectacular volumes and leading-edge design means she exudes a sense of luxuriousness and space, offering a stylishly tempting alternative to a conventional monohull, in great part due to a massive 13.1m beam. The full beam master suite takes up the entire forward section of the main deck. Its 180° panoramic glazing blurs the barriers with the 100 sqm cockpit and Jacuzzi outside. Behind it is a 200 sqm living area lots more glazing to brighten and freshen Isabelle Racoupeau’s already harmonious and elegant contemporary interiors. Four double VIP staterooms of a standard well superior to an equivalent monohull lie on the lower deck with the crew quarters. The helm station is on the upper deck with a lounge aft opening into a second full-beam cockpit. A magnificent 80 sqm fly yields yet more sunning space and a forward bar with a hard top bimini. lia Yachts has announced the sale of a new 60m Vripack design to the expert owner of a string of previous vessels.

This time, however, he wanted an Ice Class to explore the world with his family, asking for a high performance, go-anywhere craft with the accommodation, provisioning and refuelling capabilities for long stays aboard. “Coming hard on the heels of Al Waab, we are thrilled to once again collaborate with the same team on another innovative, inspiring new build,” says Gökhan Çelik, President of Alia Yachts. Unusually, the large galley and crew mess/saloon are forward on the main deck together with a technical room with access to the side-loading tender garage. However, the lower deck boasts a magnificent beach club with a massage room, dive store, gym, relaxation area and steam shower. As aboard Al Waab, semi-transparent side panels create a wind-protected area that blurs the boundaries with the water. There are two guest twins and four double VIP staterooms on the lower deck. The owner’s suite on the upper deck has spectacular views as well as its own lounge and foredeck area. http://aliayachts.com

he owner really wanted to create his own design and experience on board. His strong motivation from the start was to come up with unique design ideas and solutions and create the ultimate smart design, as efficient as possible. The way we interpreted this was to approach the design insideout, ensuring the owner’s residential specifications and co-creating the special exterior design as it is right now with him and archineers.berlin. They pushed the design forward with their extreme, creative ideas and working methods. With their keen eye for detail and constant drive to go that extra mile, Kenshõ became one of the most detailed projects we have worked on. The development of the ultimate layout by Azure and client covered a period of just over a year. The optimizations didn’t stop after signing – we all continued to shape and transform the design into the owner’s dream. From day one, the owner was focused on relocating the wheelhouse to achieve the ultimate viewing spot forward for the guest living room and integrate the wheelhouse into the

bow together with the tender garage. The design started out with a length of 49m. As the height steadily grew due to the extravagantly lofty ceilings, the length needed to be increased to match these proportions, finally reaching the magical limit of 75m. With Kenshõ we have used one design experience for all the decks, which are also interconnected, enhancing the energy flows. The sun deck is worth highlighting as it is one of the owner’s main visionary design elements. Not wanting the sun deck to be an afterthought, we developed a functional layout that suited the relaxation experience envisioned by the owner himself. As the aft deck is connected to the foredeck by a spacious corridor, the aft deck provides a large bar, sofa, dining lounge, all crowned by the skylight and high, specially-finished dome. The foredeck has a manta ray sun bed, seating lounge and intimate Jacuzzi integrated in the deck house, offering an amazing view and a versatile yachting experience. hen we met the owner, Azure Yacht Design and archineers. berlin the exterior design had already been finalised and the concept of a natural, holistic boat was clearly defined. There had to be a dialogue between the exteriors and interiors. When we started asking the owner about the project, what became clear was that he was looking for a new kind of hybrid. What I mean by that is that we weren’t designing the interiors of a boat or a house, we are designing something that was a vessel, a tool that gave him the means to live out his dreams and observe nature, to look at things from a different perspective. He has a great fondness for Asia - European spaces feature plaster, stone, and metal, while Asia means wood, paper, and fabric. It’s softer. In terms of the materials, we’ve used a relatively small selection. I like to call it duets or trios, most of the time, versus the whole symphony. We are not trying to do everything with stone and marquetry. How do we find, like a duet or a trio, something that is an essential combination of voices? And those voices are coming through materials. For example, our wood is not the typical kind of quarter-cut soft wood that is exactly perfect. It is a little bit wild, it has a voice, it talks about its life. We can marry that with leather and silk, and make for something that has a quiet type of energy

44

that continues to channel back to the client. When we make spaces, how do you feel comfortable in the space? It’s more than just materials, it’s about scale and size. We wanted to sculpt the spaces on the boat. We designed every single piece on board. We didn’t look at brands to get all these custom things done, we sought out artisans from across Europe. We worked with Ebénisterie Générale, who did most of the custom furniture, Pilot AG for the incredible sliding dining tables and Preciosa for our free-floating lamps. Crystal Caviar helped us with the fabrication of a very special chandelier in the dining room. We also worked with artists and artisans, including Axel Sanson, who did an installation work in all the bathrooms and another artist, metal worker Steaven Richard, who made the metal door installation between the owner’s living room and bedroom. Another group, de Gournay, worked on a hand-painted silk wallpaper. We collaborated with some very talented people, including Helen Amy Murray, who crafted a three-dimensionally textured leather for the hallway walls. We’ve created a beautiful balance. I love the fact that we have extroverted and introverted spaces, settings that are calm, bedazzling and glamorous. Some projects can be about muscle and ego, this one is really about joy.

enshõ is an exceptional example of a full custom project brought to completion by TISG. Its entire design and build exactly reflected the owner’s stylistic specifications, confirming our know-how and special skills in the construction of wholly tailor-made megayachts, with intense attention to detail, innovation and environmental sustainability. The owner had already had experience of Northern European yards and wanted a yacht that reflected his personality and requirements down to the smallest detail. His was a constant, vital presence at every stage of the project, and he showed himself to be skilled, demanding and truly passionate. Kenshõ’s strong points have to be firstly, the diesel-electric propulsion system with permanent magnet electric motors providing high efficiency and power in a small package, and then the futuristic cutting-edge design. During the yacht’s development we placed great emphasis on the environment, in line with the Classification Body’s ECO certification. The propulsion system includes five variable-speed generators,

46

all equipped with anti-particulate systems to optimise consumption at all speeds and reduce atmospheric emissions. This owner asked for this hybrid propulsion, and the yard took this on board and developed a diesel electric propulsion system with azimuth pod, variable speed generators and provision for a lithium polymer battery pack. The yacht was challenge mainly to ourselves. The Italian Sea Group looks on every project as an opportunity to improve its already exceptional technical, operational and stylistic standards. The owner’s apartment is a totally unique area, an oasis of calm and elegance providing an extraordinary level of comfort and quiet. In the living area the strength and tradition of teak frame the space, its impact softened by the use of silk. Natural light, which enters through the four large windows looking out onto the sea, helps create a relaxing, intimate atmosphere enhanced by drawings and engravings by a Japanese artist that give this interior a resemblance to a Zen retreat.

The “My Journey” module automatically records every flight and displays the journey statistics and objectives reached, making it easy to compile logbooks and recall the most pleasant events. As for the liveries, Cirrus has introduced eight new exterior colours, co-ordinated with interior colours, while the builder’s Xi Design team, in collaboration with Sherwin Williams Aerospace, has developed a new varnish that improves the definition and characteristics of the chosen livery. “From the beginning of the Xi programme in 2009 we created an exclusive experience that exploits cutting edge technology”, says Alex Alequin. “We’re enthusiastic about presenting a daring collection of colours, in premium leather, too, to create a personalised aircraft that can complement its owner’s style”. Equipped with the options that everyone goes for, it costs around 900,000 dollars, but it’s impossible to find anything more exclusive on the market in this category.

xtreme personalisation. Right now the yacht industry is abuzz as the yards pull out all the stops to deliver the spectacular megayachts ordered during the pandemic and over the last year. All ordered by owners who remained enthusiastic and committed despite the many and varied difficulties on the international scene. The result? Customisation of even the tiniest detail is now the order of the day. Whether they are ordering a superyacht or a smaller boat, today’s owners are clamouring in ever greater numbers to mould their beloved craft around their own tastes and lifestyles. This goes beyond the merely stylistic, straying too into technology. Hence the yards are strengthening their partnerships with leading designer furnishing brands which sometimes turn their yachts into a floating homes and others lend them a touch of individual flair without changing their ultimate raison d’etre of plying the seas and creating a powerful bond with the sea. Technology is also advancing so fast that it isn’t just creating luxe new finishes but also ensuring yachts are more comfortable than ever (and sustainable!). Add to this mix the designers and architects whose creativity, experience and constant research create a heady alchemy that produces magnificent results: beautiful to look at, stupendous to experience. This steel and aluminium build is designed by the The Italian Sea Group’s Centro Stile. Left, the Perini fleet. The brand has been acquired by TISG, a strategic choice in the light of the sail yacht sector’s return to dynamic growth

questions to Giovanni Costantino Founder and Ceo of The Italian Sea Group What does the Perini brand’s entry into TISG mean for the brand? The acquisition of Perini Navi is a strategic move for the future of The Italian Sea Group, which is continuing to widen its horizons. The operation we put together, and that I enthusiastically supported, perfectly complements our growth strategy and yacht-building expertise. Stylistic innovation is a fundamental principle for TISG. Will Perini’s arrival create an opportunity for new creative solutions? We invest constantly in stylistic and technological innovation in order to predict the requirements of our clients, who are always very demanding. Every year 1.5% of our revenue is dedicated to investment in R&D, which means evolution and development of design. With Perini Navi we’ll have the opportunity to further expand our offer of creative solutions. TISG had already started looking at luxury sail yachts. Was there a change of direction with Perini to reflect the fact that this is now a strategic sector, and what trends do you predict? The large sail yacht sector is once again a very dynamic market, as shown by the two recent sail yacht orders signed with by TISG in December, so we’re confident we’ve made the right choice, a decision justified by an incoming order that has exceeded expectations by 50%. According to the Global Order Book 2022 we are the leading Italian yard in the production of craft over 50 metres in length. We currently have 27 commissions under construction with an overall length of 757 metres. In the context of a market that is beginning to grow again we will continue to strengthen our position as one of the major international players, not only because of our company’s powerful reputation but also the international reputation for high quality our yachts enjoy. Tecnomar and Lamborghini, Admiral and Giorgio Armani – can we expect new exclusive collaborations with Perini? Generally speaking, one of our objectives is to generate further brand extension activities with luxury fashion and high-tech brands, reflecting our prestigious positioning. We’ll see! With Perini, TISG becomes a centre of excellence of Made in Italy flair and expertise in the yacht-building sector. What are you main projects for the future? We have a number of motor and sail yacht projects in the pipeline. We’re looking forward with great confidence to a growth market and our large yacht consolidation strategy will generate the results we’ve set ourselves to achieve.

questions to Stefano de Vivo CCO of Ferretti Group What is the typical Custom Line owner, and what is he or she looking for? Custom Line clients are looking for a made-to-measure yacht that reflects their personality and the way they experience the sea. Every Custom Line yacht is a masterpiece that tells a unique story. It’s a perfect combination of cutting-edge technology, ingenious, functional solutions and a refined design. Custom Line is increasingly applying home design ideas to its yachts. Is this the company’s choice or a response to market demands? The sea is an emotion that must be experienced up close, so Custom Line designs the spaces in a personal way, for maximum comfort. Constant research and the choice of prestigious woods and finishes translates into a combination of lines, materials and furnishings with a distinctive character. Today’s yachts are increasingly thought of as private islands, seafront villas. Do your relationships with the finest Italian design brands reflect this? Yacht sailing is trending more and more towards the concept of floating villas and lofts, to live in at sea. Custom Line takes these trends and interprets them in the best possible way, blending the elegant intimacy of a private space with the seagoing experience. The aim is to offer ever larger, more sophisticated interior and exterior spaces that maximise on-board comfort and provide owners with privacy and well-being while emphasising contact with the sea. What’s the added value of a Custom Line yacht? Every Custom Line yacht is built by specialist master artisans whose work is infused with the pride and dedication they feel as creators of highly prestigious yachts. The distinctive lines of the exteriors and interiors are based on a collaboration between centres of design excellence, the yard’s architects and project managers and the Custom Line Atelier. In constant contact with the owner’s family, they create the yacht piece by piece. The pure lines are matched by a decisive character, the mark of a well-defined personality. What’s the common element in the relationships between Custom Line and the brands it creates relationships with? Heritage, Italian design, quality, artisanal techniques, constant innovation and exclusivity are the values linking Custom Line and the selected Italian design and furnishing brands that can give clients unique emotions and experiences. It’s a journey that goes beyond the superficial, beyond appearances, it’s one that starts with people, technicians, artisans, skills that are used every day when you become involved in the art of building refined yachts. A unique voyage, exactly like the yachts and their owners. Because sailing is an art.

questions to Maurizio Fabiani President of Fabiani Yacht What type of owner did you design the 101 Hybrid for? The 101 Hybrid is definitely the top of the Fabiani Yacht range. It’s intended for owners who are committed to protecting the sea and the environment in general as well as having the skills and competence needed to sail classic yachts around 30m or more in length. The yacht is equipped with a complex series of systems capable of managing two very diverse types of propulsion. In essence this means being able to use large diesel engines that can power the yacht to a top speed of 23 knots while also being to draw on two electrical propulsion systems fed by large, retractable solar panel arrays to enable sailing at 6-8 knots in total silence with zero pollution and at zero cost. How does the panel system work in high winds? In high winds if the sea is rough and it’s hard to maintain smooth sailing the panels should be retracted. If the skipper doesn’t act, accelerometers pick up the anomaly, activate an audible alarm and initiate the automatic retraction process for the panels. What are the yacht’s other main features? The exterior and interior spaces are very striking. The owner’s cabin is unique, extremely panoramic, and the large opening windows mean the lounge is full of light. Then there’s the large forward sunpad that can be raised to an elevated position. The flybridge is spacious and versatile. Finally, when the yacht’s moored up in the marina the patented multifunctional platform makes it accessible to all, including wheelchair users. Luxury and sustainability. Are owners ready for this combination? We think that owners are now aware that luxury, sustainability and technical skill can exist side-by-side. On-board lifestyles are changing. How does the 101 reflect this? We think the lifestyle on board our 101’ can meet every owner’s requirements. It’s a splendid villa boasting every comfort that you can take wherever you like – you can float at anchor and enjoy a nice swim in a secluded bay using solar energy to power the yacht’s services. Our 101’ is easily accessible to little kids and their grandparents.

questions to Vincenzo Solenne CEO of Luxury Carpet Studio What imminent projects are you most excited about? There are three, mainly – converting part of our production into recycled products in line with the dynamics of the circular economy, opening a new branch in the UK and becoming world leader over the next three years in the megaand giga yacht markets. Which yacht-building yards do work with most frequently? Heesen Yachts, Sanlorenzo, Palumbo Group, ISA Yacht, Montecarlo Yachts, AB Yachts, CBI Navi, Maiora, Gulf Craft and Baglietto. Where do the raw materials you use come from? As well as the recycled materials, is it possible to source ethical materials of animal origin? It depends on the type of raw material – for example, the wool we use is premium quality from New Zealand, from monitored farms that emphasise animal welfare and responsible land management. These are prestigious, select materials, mainly of natural origin. What colours and patterns are the most popular? It varies on the basis of the project under consideration. For yachts it’s light, natural colours that are most in demand, while the fashion industry mostly looks for more accentuated colours. Clients in the more traditional hospitality sector demand colours that offer greater ease of maintenance and cleanliness. For residential projects, though, it depends on the architect the final client is collaborating with. As for patterns, 3D patterns are especially prized by yacht builders and their clients. Many mega-and gigayacht projects use this type of pattern, made using refined yarns like a woolsilk blend and 100% silk. Do you think carpets will also come back into fashion for furnishing home interiors? Can they become an artistic element, a vital part of the interior’s decorative concept? Furnishing home interiors with carpets is something we don’t often see in the Italian culture, but it’s more widespread in the other parts of the world we work with. I think carpets can make a comeback, thanks to the influence and artistic trends of other cultures. They certainly have the potential to become a key element in interior decoration.

oceans since OT first entered the nautical arena 35 years ago. “It grew out of a passion for sailing and yachts,” confesses Oliver Treutlein who now works mostly with the leading international custom-build shipyards. Why? Because OT has the creative talents to do the near-impossible, with all of its glorious creations handtufted in the German town of Meerbusch. “When I started out in 1985, I made the carpets myself with just two employees to order for our clients who were interior designers and architects back then,” laughs Treutlein. This laid the foundations for OT’s future focus and success: creating custom designs for custom projects. “From the beginning, this was the big difference with other competitors,” adds Oliver. “Clients like working with us because they know we create a new design for each new project. Everything is the highest quality from the very first sketch to the installation phase. Our other big advantage is that we are still a family business. Our daughter Julia is now in charge of Project Management, our son-in-law Max is following in my footsteps. Despite the difficulties of the pandemic and now the war in Ukraine, we are still delivering projects not just on time but also with a very modest or no extra cost”. www.olivertreutlein.com/en

olvo Penta’s IPS propulsion systems are more than efficient and reliable - since their launch in 2005 they have inspired a revolution in the propulsion world. Over 35,000 units have been sold, and they

have been mounted on thousands of pleasure and commercial craft. In recent years they have also begun to be used on superyachts above 30 metres. The latest of these was the Amer 120, launched last August. Volvo Penta has installed its most powerful IPS system on board this 36-metre yacht. It comprises four 1000 hp IPS 1350 diesel thrusters coupled to pod drives, and it is this combination of IPS

Creating a smarter, more virtuous on-board water cycle is the mission driving HP Watermakers in its development and production of desalinators, softeners and purifiers. Always Moving Forward by Paola Bertelli

There’s always a buzz of excitement around the place at Besenzoni as the company readies itself yet again to take on new challenges and develop the right solutions for the right yacht. This “can-do” attitude enables it to maintain its position as a benchmark for the sector, with its on-board accessories and components that can be customised to suit every yacht

T

he EVO V8 has become a permanent showroom for Besenzoni. Together with the Blu Emme Yachts yard and designer Valerio Rivellini, Besenzoni has developed, customised and

researched a series of accessories and components on board the yacht, reflecting the requirements of the owner and his crew. In the words of Giorgio Besenzoni, president of Besenzoni spa, “Starting from an existing Besenzoni product, the shipyard and designer managed to create new solutions and even customize some of the products, adapting them to the demands of the yacht’s particular design”.

110

The Evo V8 is a unique 24-metre yacht with a refined design and cutting-edge concept. It’s like a Russian doll hiding one surprise inside the other, and Besenzoni plays an important role in many of these surprises. We’ll start with most unusual element, the rooftop. The designer conceived it as a surprise effect, very low, concealed from view from the side and integrated into the superstructure. Inevitably there could be no fixed stairway to provide access as this would betray its presence, so the choice was made to instal a retractable hydraulic

Another key element by Besenzoni is located on the beach area, a huge space designed to be entirely available for the use of guests, so all the technical elements are hidden out of sight, starting with the Besenzoni G 444 hydraulic tender hoist, which retracts into a space under the floor. Further forward the sunshade canopy from Besenzoni’s BestShade division provides rapid shelter from the heat. Finally, in the scenic main deck lounge the partially-opening high-tech windows made by Besenzoni required careful design and extremely precise construction, “As we had to integrate the existing system with the special film technology containing LCD crystals, which makes it possible to make the glass opaque for greater privacy and transform it into a projector screen in 4K”. The encounter with the Blu Emme Yachts yard has enabled Besenzoni to exploit its experience, know-how and vision to the full, constantly aiming to develop proposals with tailormade aesthetics and functionality. www.besenzoni.it

Crisp, elegant lines are the hallmark of this 30-metre yacht, a winning combination of functionality and comfort. It hosts guests in hospitable spaces that invite a relationship with the surrounding sea, and offers 120 square metres of open-air space on the flybridge by Paola Bertelli - ph. Maurizio Parisi

112

MAIORA 30 WALKAROUND

113

ts volumes and an exciting interaction between interiors and exteriors are the two features that immediately strike those setting foot on board the Maiora 30 Walkaround, a yacht inspired by the on-going research carried out by the Next Yacht Group yard with its team of interior and exterior designers. The yacht is 30 metres long with a 7.5 metre beam. The inter-deck height of 2.20 metres ensure enhanced liveability and functionality, while a versatility that generates dynamic, never static spaces means there is an even greater emphasis on comfort. The designers’ aim was to shape a lifestyle that also extends to the yacht’s marine environment, with the sea playing a crucial role. The clean, soberly elegant furnishings in neutral colours and select natural materials inside and out help create a balanced, harmonious stylistic continuity. The three decks are connected by external stairs fore and aft, providing the infrastructure for a smooth, natural flow of on-board movement and interaction. One very striking element is the infinite flybridge, 120 square metres of open-air space hosting a series of open, sun-filled spaces fore and aft with loungers, conversation areas and shaded areas sheltered by a light, dynamic hard top. There is also a bar and open-air dining area. Wide side walkways connect the bow and stern spaces. The designers have succeeded in integrating the flybridge into the yacht’s sleek profile without compromising its taut lines and sporty look. Guests stepping aboard are immediately welcomed by a sophisticated cockpit furnished with freestanding elements by Talenti – the sofa, armchairs and coffee table are all finished in teak, and the two lamps have a timeless geometric design. A few steps separate this space from the aft deck, a spacious sea-level terrace with a deep horseshoe-shape sofa facing the sea. In the main-deck saloon huge full-height windows open out onto the spectacular view – the slender balustrades do not intrude on the visual contact with the sea. The style is refined and contemporary, warm and welcoming, reminiscent of an exclusive villa. A large marble-topped Poltrona Frau table precedes a relaxation/TV/cinema room with soft furnishings again by Poltrona Frau, including the Archibald, an icon leather armchair with a classic elegance. A fully concealed ”infinity” glass door sets up a dialogue between the saloon and cockpit, each becoming an extension of the other. When it’s open, it transforms the dining area into an alfresco space. The choice of a raised wheelhouse on an intermediate level between the main and sun decks has left the designers free to revamp the spatial layout, creating a full-height owner’s suite forward of the saloon. Its long, wide windows provide a breath-taking view of the sea. Four guest cabins are located on the lower deck, and the crew quarters can accommodate up to five people. The yacht’s dimensions also mean there is ample room for a side-opening garage housing a tender over six metres long, and as there is more than two metres of headspace there’s plenty of scope for stowing a wide selection of water toys. The space further forward is used for storing all kinds of marine gear in a two-metre high locker with dual access so that guests can enjoy an uncluttered deck. The forward section also hosts a large stowage space that is home to a full-size jet ski that can be launched and recovered with a retractable crane. The Maiora 30 Walkaround has a draft of just two metres, enabling it to navigate shallow waters, and is powered by two traditional MTU units pushing out 2000 Hp each, giving the yacht a top speed of 23 knots. Stabilisers operating under way and at berth ensure maximum comfort. www.nextyachtgroup.com

114

Built by the Next Yacht Group, the Maiora 30 Walkaround is 30 metres long and 7.5 metres wide. In the photo, the striking stairs between the flybridge and main deck, an unusual solution that renders on-board movement fluid and agile. Great emphasis has been placed on the external spaces and clean, uncluttered decks, like the aft helm station (opposite page) and spacious forward lounge (opening)

he main elements driving the study and design of the Maiora 30 Walkaround were a commitment to using extreme versatility and layout modularity to provide great freedom of use, as well as a desire to create taut, attractive lines, a sporty, sensual profile and interconnected spaces. The Maiora 30’s “Walkaround” designation derives from the fact that guests can enjoy the fore and aft sections of the flybridge without interruption by using the side walkways and large exterior surfaces, with no interposed structural element. It’s a unique feature that opens up an area of 120 square metres from stern to bow with no intervening stairs or steps. The yacht has a raised helm station and an open stern making room for a fully-equipped beach area that’s ready to be enjoyed. The forward section has also been designed to create a sleek, distinctive profile with a Portuguese bridge whose size is unique in this category. The side-opening garage hosts a tender over six metres long, again unique in this category and for boats up to 40 metres in length, as well as every toy guests can desire. Concealed from view there is another

area is the sun deck, which will take everyone’s breath away. Quite frankly, there isn’t another one like it on the market. When you climb the aft stairs you feel you’ve been given privileged access to the rooftop terrace of an exclusive hotel, exquisitely Italian and with a romantic feel.

A

n elegance that is sophisticated without tending to minimalism and an atmosphere that puts guests at their ease, communicating serenity and warmth – these were the specifications outlined in the brief we worked from. Maiora 30 Walkaround was created to provide owners with a 30-metre craft with much larger volumes than yachts of a similar length and equal or greater headroom than that offered by larger designs. On this yacht we’ve emphasised the concept of volume while maintaining open environments that are easy to make use of and where the furnishings enhance the space’s dimensions rather than cluttering their surroundings. These free, flowing spaces are always full of natural light, creating a seductive, comfortable feeling that surrounds guests as they gradually discover a yacht that’s decidedly bigger than its 30 metre length would suggest. The underlying theme of the entire design is the connection, the interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces, sheer fun and total relaxation. The raised position of the bridge is a distinctive features that enabled us to retain a sleek exterior line and make the best use of the available interior volumes. It also allowed us to transform the entrance to the owner’s suite into a full-height luminous screen, emphasising the importance of the space. We build custom yachts, all different because all our clients have their own requirements. For this model we chose a palette of warm colours – the soft grey of the wood blends perfectly with the beige ceilings and leather, creating an elegant interaction with the different dove greys of the furnishings and the brown flooring. A large part of the furnishings, from the beds to the storage units, Calacatta marble washbasins and exterior furniture were designed entirely in-house. Some pieces, like the TV unit or the storage modules in the saloon are integrated with iconic products by our partner Poltrona Frau, although they have been modified to meet our needs. Poltrona Frau also supplied all the interior chairs and sofas. Other important partners like K-array and Samsung collaborated with us on technical aspects to develop original solutions that go together to create a unique on-board experience.

nchanting, light-filled, functional, the Maiora 30 Walkaround is our interpretation of the “Mediterranean” type craft, full of light throughout, with huge spaces and exterior solutions enabling guests to enjoy the sun and sea, traditional propulsion and the sophisticated Maiora taste in every detail. This superyacht’s basic underlying concept, in line with the Next Yacht Group DNA, is to offer a new dimension of customisation. This includes not only the layout, decor, engines and list of options but a modularity developed in the product planning stage enables owners to select from the different stern, superstructure and top deck modules to construct their own interpretation of on-board life and spatial configuration. The Maiora 30 Walkaround is the sister of the Maiora 30 Convertible: the same naval platform with 7.5 metre beam, sideopening garage and net inter-deck height of over 2.20 metres, but with a more Mediterranean emphasis, greater exterior functionality and no compromise in the volumes and interior comfort. Put simply, spaces, heights and carrying capability of a yacht one size larger with light, glamour, technology and innovative solutions throughout. The project’s basic ingredients were a readiness to listen to input from owners and Maiora enthusiasts, technical creativity, the sophisticated taste of the interior designers and the intention to use modularity to create a unique product for a select number of passionate owners. As always there was no shortage of technical and construction challenges. Take, for example, being able to provide 15% of tonnage more in relation to the length while remaining a leader in terms of performance, even with traditional propulsion, inventing modularity without running the risks of pure custom and finally, interpreting market trends like light-filled interiors, contact with the sea, comfort and lifestyle with proposals that are always original and intensely appealing.

The graphic motifs were selected from the designer’s image archive. Since the late 1930s she drew on photography as an important means of expression. The porcelain is hand-decorated with a blue and white pattern and reflects Charlotte Perriand’s interest in the natural world. During her travels she loved to gather and collect stones, roots and pieces of wood, and would then include them in her designs, using natural elements to integrate engravings and decorations. These methods had a solid practical basis in the knowledge the French architect acquired in Japan, where she studied lacquer work and ceramic techniques between 1940 and 1941. www.ginori1735.com - www.cassina.com

They often ask me to place an art work in context within a design, so when starting from a work to set in a room you begin to design a wall, a dining room and bit by bit an entire project”. spaces of the Deloitte Digital Studio in Milan, where the architect has defined an innovative work format anticipating the changes imposed by lockdown. “I wanted to find an alternative to the conventional fixed desk. We experimented with a use of space that enabled more flexible work modes – working while you cook together or playing team games on a conference table that also transforms into a table tennis table. After experiencing the definitive disappearance of the traditional home/work duality over the past two years many of the architect’s clients are now ready to rethink living spaces, assigning an active use to spaces originally intended for business purposes. Now we come to the nautical project by Luca Bombasse for the interiors of Ferretti’s Navetta 42. “While retaining the traditional yacht layout the interior reflects an almost urban residential living concept. The result is a sort of house where you can enjoy a different view every day”. A second aspect of the project was the desire to make the interiors fit the presence of art works, so they would not simply look like status symbols to be shown off. “Those who know and appreciate it spritually ask me to find a way of contextualising a work. Sometimes I have to think more like an art advisor than a designer”. The element of his experience in yacht-building he considers most enlightening is the collaboration with the parallel world of the artisans and experts who work with the big yards. “They’ve taught me to think in a different way about spaces and the sense of proportion, and it’s a ph. useful lesson that’s influenced my residential design. For example, when restructuring an old farmhouse in Puglia I reproduced a bathroom designed for the limited spaces of a yacht inside an old bread oven. Working on yachts has enabled me to think outside the box”. And to overcome all obstacles, transforming them into opportunities. 136

magine a unique, exclusive object designed to offer a perfect interpretation of its owner’s requirements and offer almost endless opportunities for personalisation, like a bespoke jacket. In other words, a means of fulfilling the dream of possessing something wholly

individual. It’s a common ambition, because a unique object is a sign of status and distinction. Now the concept isn’t limited to large yachts constructed according their owners’ wishes, it also applies to medium-sized craft. Tuxedo 13.88 is one of these, and is already a reality – the first yacht by the newly-established Tuxedo Yachting House brand in Lavagna, Liguria, is now sailing peacefully in the East Asian waters of Hong Kong, bearing something of great value – the hallmark attesting that every part of it was shaped by Italian hands. This is a powerful asset for number of reasons. Firstly, the original idea for the Tuxedo 13.88 is the result of a twenty-year collaboration between Laura Ceccarelli and her brother Francesco - both with yacht building in their blood as they are children of the famous Aldo, long-time president of Confindustria Nautica - and the renowned designer of unique yachts, Luca Dini. The material chosen for the build is aluminium, reflecting the Ceccarelli family’s tradition and far-sightedness, realising the material’s potential as far back as 1963 and recognising that it is light, without equal and sustainable. Aluminium’s structural characteristics give it reliability, which translates into greater safety for guests and crew – in the event of an impact it deforms rather than breaks, so water does not enter the hull. It’s also flame resistant with a melting point of 660°. Lastly, aluminium lends itself easily to being recycled. As Laura Ceccarelli says, “The reason behind setting up the Tuxedo Yachting House was to create a yard that would give all of its yachts the attention and dedication required to make them as perfect as they deserve to be. No stock production, where quantity is the most important consideration, but complete, absolute attention to detail”.

The owner of the first 13.88 chose the Black Tuxedo version with its classic sunpad with sea view, but there is now a second option – the Blue Tuxedo is a pure day cruiser with living area boasting a panoramic table and facing seats. The interiors give owners free rein to choose the layout and fittings that suit them best. In the first example, the Hong Kong based client wanted a bow cabin with clean lines and a double bed with storage locker underneath. The Dini studio has designed an alternative with two separate beds that can be transformed into one single bed by lifting a section of the floor. The configuration possibilities also include a second with cabin hosting twin beds. The helm station – located amidships, of course – features SIMRAD instrumentation with two 12” touch screens. Components and layout can be personalised. Two propulsion solutions are offered, outboard with three 300 Hp Mercury Verado motors or inboard with two Volvo D6 IPS 600 engines. Top speed for both is between 40 knots with a 35-knot cruising speed. More powerful D6 IPS 650 and D8 IPS 700 units are also available. Diversity is a key element for the brand and the Fendi Casa collection”, says Alberto Da Passano, CEO of FF Design, the company handling development of the Fendi Casa brand. “Design is the cultural and technical legitimisation of our products. Our development includes a mix of designs and techniques, materials, shapes and our brand’s decorative taste. We draw a great deal of information from its heritage, which is alive, full of energy and is passed on through eclectic interpretation and constant development”. The new Fendi Casa collection reinterprets Fendi’s typical stylistic codes through the heterogenous vision of a range of very different designers selected by Silvia Venturini Fendi, an approach that seeks uniqueness within same stylistic frame of reference and responds to the requirements of the high end of the market. “On the one hand globalisation has caused a sort of worldwide uniformity of taste by creating a style we could call cosmopolitan, but today’s clients are looking for quality, which is more than ever the determining factor in purchasing choices. which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary. It was founded in 1961 in Predore, on the shores of Lake Iseo, and since then it has widened its original accessories catalogue to include illumination and furnishing objects. This has gone hand in hand with a greater range of materials, from the classic brass to aluminium and stainless steel, with the creation of the Alluminox division in 2019, responding to the full extent of market demand, from windshields for open yachts to superyacht doors and staircases. “Everything is made to measure on the basis of the yard’s specific demands”, says Luciano Paissoni, the company’s CEO. “We have modern equipment and specialist operators, and now we dedicate ourselves not only to industrial production but also to producing small numbers of pieces, with the attention to detail more and clients are looking for to help them develop a distinctive presence on the

And this desire to move in the direction of increasing refinement has led to the foundation of Foresti & Suardi Design, with exclusive outdoor furnishing complement lines created by designer Christian Grande in collaboration with the company’s technical office, which is driven by a constant search for technological innovation. The Iseo director’s chairs are a part of this, embellished by elegant Maria Flora fabrics, with a sun lounger version under development, and the Sorgente stainless steel shower stand. The chrome plated brass Flatwash deck shower system has obtained prestigious accolades in the design field - in 2020 it was nominated at the Dame design wards in Amsterdam and in 2021 was selected by the Adi Design index 2021, which every year identifies the best Italian design entering production. The Foresti & Suardi Lighting division offers an exceptional range of brass wall or ceiling lamps, LED profiles and table lamps like the Piacentini from an idea by Christian Grande, coordinating brass and marble. “We collaborate with all the yards” says Paissoni, “And 50% of our production goes abroad, where clients value our quality, the durability of our products, which is always a priority for us, as well as service”. Finally, since 2019 the company has been certified as 100% Made in Italy, with a production developed and made entirely in Italy, manufactured using high-quality natural materials and traditional methods. www.forestiesuardi.it 153

Sunreef 80 Power, his favourite getaway whenever he has time to relax and luxuriate in renewing his bond with the sea. Having previously purchased a Monte Carlo Yachts 76 in 2013, Nadal later decided to make the move to a much roomier catamaran and turned to Polish yard Sunreef, which is not just an expert custom cat builder but also renowned for its quality and its focus on sustainability. Great White delivers an astonishing 320 sqm metres of living space. “You just can’t match the comfort a catamaran offers,” the tennis legend says. “Onboard space is important when you like sharing it with friends and family and you always want privacy more than anything else. I visited a sailing Sunreef 80 at the Yachting Festival in Cannes and I was immediately interested to know if there was a motor version”. Great White is an ultramodern craft with beautifully elegant lines that combines comfort with superb seakeeping. Her white and cobalt blue livery is eye-catching yet also a great classically elegant choice. Aft, a double staircase brings guests down to water level and makes slipping into the sea a pleasure. A hydraulic platform is ideal for launching the tender and also creates a spacious bathing area. Large portholes run along the sides of both hulls, drawing light into the interior and cabins of which there are four. Nadal’s own stateroom is amidships with a magnificent balcony that opens out over the sea. Lots of light and versatile spaces are the leitmotif. The large saloon is a sea terrace by any other name with large windows and cutaway gunwales yielding 180 degree sea views. “This was one of the first modifications I asked for – I wanted the hull to have low sides so that I could see the sea even when I was sitting,” says Nadal. Two oversize sofas are set on either side of the saloon and the large board flooring creates a sense of continuity with the teak exterior decking. The steering position to starboard in the living area is very much part of the life aboard: a front-facing settee to port allows Nadal to chat with his captain. Outside a very large cockpit provides shade for relaxing in, while a huge sun pad takes pride of place on the foredeck in addition to a further recessed cockpit with large sofas. The fly is also home to another chill-out area and the second - al fresco - steering position. Below decks, Great White offers accommodation to eight guests in four beautifully refined, modern staterooms. The garage lies directly under the large saloon sofa and houses a jet ski and a selection of water toys as well as a refuelling point. A yacht that seems suspended in time, an example of classic design that embraces the future, created to reflect the tastes and lifestyle of contemporary owners. It carries in its DNA the genetic heritage of Benetti’s navettes from the 1960s, restating their well-bred elegance with generous light-filled spaces, a constant visual contact with the sea and above all a unique joie de vivre

159

he Motopanfilo is no ordinary yacht and has to be experienced up close. Guests stepping on board have the impression they’re entering the body of a great whale. It’s a pleasant, all-embracing feeling, one of being sheltered in surroundings decorated in calm, relaxing colours. Everything to be expected from a yacht created to instil a sense of pleasure. “Communicating the joy of living is our fundamental aim”, says Giovanna Vitelli, Vice-President of the Azimut|Benetti Group. “The idea of having a yacht that enables you to enjoy a positive atmosphere expressed in a way that reflects modern times”. The origins of the Motopanfilo, a composite displacement yacht 37 metres long, can be traced back to the design of the Benetti navettes of the 1960s, restating their well-bred elegance. Not a straightforward restyling of a successful model, but an up-to-date project with a modern soul providing generous spaces that are in constant contact with the sea. The yard handled the conceptual design with an exceptional team - Francesco Struglia for the exterior lines and Lazzarini Pickering Architetti for the interior and exterior decks.. The external profile is one of refined, austere elongated forms with crisp, clean cut-outs and an elegance that does not rely on fashion. In fact, the yacht owes its essence to the past, enhanced by new stylistic and technological developments. The modern Motopanfilo offers generous, wonderfully bright spaces with large windows and wide terraces. This constant contact with the sea is a theme throughout, even in the interiors, reminding us we are on board a yacht, not inside an apartment. Claudio Lazzarini and Carl Pickering took this theme as a focus for their work, and although their original working environment is residential architecture they are always at ease in the yachting world – the Rome-based studio, winner of a series of awards including the Compasso d’Oro, has created iconic, highly successful yachts like the Wally B, Wallypower 118 and Sai Ram, again for Benetti. As we said, the interiors evoke the skeleton of a large whale whose ribs give rhythm to the space with architectural features recalling antique beams. Large lateral windows rather than walls define the space. The intention is to render the interiors totally open to the sea, a desire reflected in the mirrored surfaces framing the windows so that sky and sea seem to blend seamlessly and the spaces dilate. This architectural solution appears throughout the yacht, except for the grand saloon – here teak dominates, decorating the ceiling and floors. The ceilings create a vaulted effect that takes on a double curve towards the stern. A warm, much lighter shade has been chosen for the wood than would have been preferred in the past, evoking maritime tradition, as does the use of blue and white, presented in new shades. The lounge develops without interruption from the aft cockpit, forming a single living space. Almost all the furniture, like the bar unit, right, and marble-topped dining table, is designed by Lazzarini Pickering Architetti. The main deck is also the location of the owner’s suite, which is large enough to suit a 50-metre yacht. It features a walk-in wardrobe, office and bathroom with symmetrical twin washbasins fitting smoothly into their surroundings. The shower unit is wide and spacious. The cotton and cashmere bath linen is by Loro Piana, which has produced all the yacht’s bespoke fabrics, including exteriors and carpets. Four spacious guest suites are located on the lower deck, all sharing the theme of identifying the spaces according to their nature, deliberately leaving the curved shape visible and restating the stylistic element of the beams through an inversion of colours and materials. From the lobby a spiral staircase winds around a central shaft which, like the spine of large whale, links the two decks with the bright, elegant upper deck sky lounge. The exterior social areas are also immensely appealing, like the forward zone with its huge hydromassage pool and large sunpad, and the stern beach platform (which at the yard they call the Kennedy terrace because of the retro style evoked by the hood), a very elegant space that’s also very close to the water. The cherry on the cake is the observatory lounge, created in spirit of the age, recalling the crow’s nest on old sailing ships. “It’s a cosy, private spot where you can enjoy the starry skies or read a book”, says Giovanna Vitelli, “A place the first owner fell in love with immediately. It was such a strong emotion that as soon as he boarded the yacht he said he wanted to live there forever, with his wife”. It wasn’t hard to believe him! www.benettiyachts.it

I

n 2009 they asked me to propose a new line for the Classic series. The idea was to modernise the aesthetic of the previous Classics, using a contemporary formula that would evoke the history of the Benetti yard. It was very interesting to see once again that the aesthetics of these wonderful motoryachts were based on a centurieslong evolution of tradition and the knowledge developed by master carpenters. The Motopanfilo 37M is made for owners who recognise elegance and

164

want to share it and enhance the beauty of the places they visit. It’s a design with links to the past, for the simplicity of its composition, well-defined volumes and the way it was developed, taking into account how the yard’s skilled workforce would relate to the project. Passion and work are an important part of this aesthetic. At the same time it’s the way the shapes interpret this constructive and technological potential, with hints of cutting-edge auto industry developments. I think the owners who bought the first examples will have been struck by this warmth and artisanal feel, which coexist with the finest nautical innovations currently available. The observation deck is one of the wonderful treats the yacht has to offer, and I’m very pleased that this feature is experiencing such

success. In fact it came about through observing at the lookout posts on several classic craft, but the aim was to create an exterior niche offering great privacy and intimacy, to share or use as an exclusive corner from where the yacht could seem to disappear. We managed to set it harmoniously into the overall design without disturbing the yacht’s sleek, soft lines thanks to the skilful collaboration provided by Benetti, a yacht builder of outstanding quality. They believed in this and many other suggestions, rendering them perfect. For the Motopanfilo 37M was a wonderful opportunity to work with illustrious names in the industry like Lazzarini and Pickering. I’d like to invite readers of The ONE Yacht & Design to visit it if they have the opportunity. In my humble opinion this entire collection of elements helps create a wonderfully balanced, comfortable experience.

Struglia has restated the powerful shapes of old-school styles and blended the hull and superstructure in a natural way to create a harmonic element. Opposite page, the yacht is an architectural shell that through a minimal supporting structure develops a design where light plays the dominant role

t was a very interesting experience. In the maritime world we’ve always worked with the owners – here, though, the commission came from the yard, which asked us to design a product that would appeal to a wide public. The brief was precise – to return to the yard’s origins, the Motopanfilo (it was Benetti who ushered in the era of romantic cruise yachts) For us it was a very intriguing proposal – nowadays most yachts look like apartments, they’ve entirely lost that maritime spirit. It’s essential to be able to make out the shape of a yacht. Following the hull lines is a useful ploy for opening out the space. So our design project started from the beams, the structural elements that span the yacht, the typical sail yacht ribbing that define the craft and are rooted in the collective imagination. Like the belly of a whale with its bones embracing the space. The second dominant theme was wood, a defining element of the yacht. This yacht has been almost deconstructed, without walls and teak floors and ceilings, creating embracing overhead curves. This enabled us to create a series of extremely significant details like the dual curves, masterfully created by the yacht’s skilled artisans. The beams also give rhythm and structure to the yacht’s architectural space, opening up a series of interpretational possibilities – we can reflect different personalisation requests by changing the materials. We deliberately set our residential experience to one side, although we did use the idea of continuity between interiors and exteriors, a fundamental theme for us in our residential work. As a result the aft cockpit, segueing into the interior living area, is almost a direct expression of this – two circular rugs and two circular conversation areas emphasise the connection. The fabrics, too, all by Loro Piana, establish this continuity, with no difference in quality between interior and exterior materials. We’ve also made the windows larger, inserting mirrored elements placed in such a way as to reflect the sea, sky and wake rather than the person. The classic portholes have been restated and transformed into wall lights. We designed almost all the furniture, with a limited selection of materials – wood, leather, lacquer and steel, with tranquil colours and the traditional blue. The yacht should breathe serenity.

W

e didn’t want a nostalgic design, we imagined a yacht rooted in the past but looking towards the future. Projects go well when ideas are sharply defined, and the concept we had in mind was clear – a timeless yacht, a historic Benetti, but one that’s extremely contemporary. We call it the 21st century Motopanfilo. Some elements were clear to us, in the briefing we passed them on the design team, leaving the designers to offer their interpretation. First of all we wanted the boat’s interior volumes to feel like a those of yacht, with spaces that mean the yacht could never be mistaken for an apartment. We wanted the lines and spaces to evoke the maritime tradition. We wanted a few, iconic lines – if you look at the yacht’s central section it has the powerful stylistic traits of our old Gabbiano. We wanted to create the mood of joie de vivre that characterised the 1960s, the parties, high society, evoked everywhere in combination with a contemporary lifestyle. This translates into large windows (which didn’t use to exist) and a stern that develops into a modern beach platform while retaining the classic lines. The observatory lounge, too, expresses the spirit of that age…I imagined a European and North American yacht, inspired by a mature, sophisticated market that was also aware of nautical history. The favourable reception has been reflected in sales figures, helping us realise the Arab world, too, loved it. Many liked the interiors with their maritime feel, the beams and the skylight, which emphasise the nautical construction, the teak and the colours that are true to the nautical style. Five units have been sold so far and a further two should be on the way. Comfort is the dominant theme on this yacht, so we’ve also invested a great deal in technology, to reduce noise and vibration. All the lower deck spaces have been built using a system we call “box in box” – in other words, flooring, walls and ceilings form what could almost be described as a floating capsule. As a result the yacht can sail during the night without disturbing the owner’s sleep. Our attention was focussed on cutting fuel exhaust emissions. To lighten the yacht, give the yacht greater stability and reduce consumption, the upper deck hard top is in carbon fibre. The engine room ventilation shafts have been shifted to the exterior to provide the saloon with air and space. All these improvements combine to create a yacht that communicates a pleasant, embracing warmth and joie de vivre.

and finishes of their mother ships. They often are walkarounds too with compact deckhouses to provide maximum deck space. Maxi RIBs really do have a whole string of advantages over conventional craft. They are lighter and have a lower centre of gravity so they roll and pitch less. Their tubes protect the hull during manoeuvres and can also double as extra seating. A Maxi RIB can hold up to three times more passengers as a regular boat too. They are even pretty much unsinkable as they have more than one air chamber or are filled with expanded foam. Right now Maxi RIBs are really driving the market with Italian and European models taking the lion’s share and being used

High-Frequency Legacy by Diego Tamone

Zenith’s Chronomaster Sport marks the opening of a new chapter in recent watchmaking history, a story that began over fifty years ago with the launch of the legendary calibre El Primero

176

T

echnically it was success from the word “go”, performing brilliantly from the moment of its introduction, exceeding all expectations. It has pushed the market to its limits to the

extent that Zenith’s order book for the Chronomaster Sport now takes up production for the collection for the next two years – a problem, yes, but one that many other companies would love to be facing! The reason for this success lies in the technical and stylistic features of this eagerly awaited high-frequency chronograph, and because it arrives at a moment when trends and tastes have led to a deep appreciation of the watch’s ability to create a contemporary interpretation of the most legendary stylistic elements while remaining faithful to tradition. To borrow a term from the automotive world, the brand has carried out a kind of watchmaking “restomod”, combining cutting-edge technology and old-school taste. This unusual combination underpins the Chronomaster Sport, an interpretation intended to bring the fifty-year saga of the El Primero automatic chronograph movement, launched in 1969 and the first integrated movement of its kind, to a climax, with 1/10 second readings, now offering enhanced performance but also stamina, with a 60-hour power reserve. It’s also a revamp of the brand’s hallmarks in terms of shape through an optimised design that makes Zenith’s latest configuration on the Chronometer base a paragon of comfort and attractive aesthetics. www.zenith-watches.com

Its pieces combine elements from the 18th century with the contemporary flavour of the urban life by Gianfilippo Versari

The great cultural affinity and friendship between Mario Buccellati and the Italian poet and writer Gabriele d’Annunzio was a source of inspiration for the Maison, resulting in such pieces as such as the “Ombelicali” necklaces

MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME IN THE OMAHA SAND DUNES The coastal town of Omaha is found on New Zealand’s North Island, 75km north of Auckland. Famed for its white sand beach and views across Omaha Bay to the Hauraki Gulf, one of the last remaining front-line plots is set to benefit from a remarkable family home, designed by the award-winning UK firm, Ström Architects by Roxanne Hughes

O

maha exclusive stretch of properties set amongst the sand dunes, began life as a more casual beach resort and holiday home destination. Now the permanent residence of many, the relaxed style and collective sense of community is what attracted Strom Architects to the more unusual location.

“I’m Swedish,” declares Magnus Ström, Founder and Creative Director of Strom Architects. “And there is something about the light and ambience of this coastal location that reminded me of my Scandinavian heritage – I was immediately drawn to it. Our practice is known for its modern and contemporary style, and the design of this property is reflective of that. Whilst it’s in complete juxtaposition to the organic nature of its setting, it’s unobtrusive, subtle and, thanks to the huge panels of glass, it takes on an element of transparency.” Strict planning guidelines and restrictions on area and volume shaped the property’s footprint, but Strom and his team set out to optimise sunlight and purposely positioned the façades to work with the coastal weather patterns. “To make the most of the incredible views, we arranged the main living area and master bedroom closest to the sea.

186

The house is constructed on a steel frame with lightweight micro concrete cladding. Limestone and pale oak has been used for the floors and glass plays an integral role in both the design and structure

They have an entirely glazed façade and large balconies, allowing these key rooms to not only enjoy the vista, but make the most of the afternoon and evening sun,” explains Ström. The additional bedrooms are on the first floor, along with a home office. On the property’s more sheltered western side, an exterior lounge has been created, and at ground level, whilst there is shelter provided by the overhang of the floor above, the space has a more free-flowing and unconventional dynamic with walls removed entirely and others replaced by glass to permit unencumbered views across the plot. The interiors are intended to be minimal, utilising a colour palette of whites and greys, and calling on timber accents and furniture to warm the ambience. The house can boast two pools, one at the front of the property and a smaller, 30-metre long lap pool at the southern boundary. A generously proportioned garage with storage for water toys and kit for other outdoor pastimes has been included, reinforcing the intention that this be a family home. www.stromarchitects.com
