THE QUEEN OF THE SEA A pearl grows inside a shell whose fleshy interior is irritated by a foreign body like a grain of sand or fragment of coral. This causes the oyster to defend itself by coating it with thin layers of mother-of-pearl, gradually giving shape to one of nature’s wonders – the spherical, symmetrical or baroque pearl. Its colour can be white, grey, apricot or any of an almost infinite range of hues, and it can be set in large pieces of jewellery whose beguiling charm is created by the delicacy of pearl and mother-of-pearl by Beatrice Galbiati
