TOGETHER WE WIN Great excitement (but not much wind) for the 51st Barcolana, the international sailing race that not only attracts more entrants than any other in the world but also high profile sponsors drawn by its combination of adventure, design and tradition

ven the last crew to finish the Barcolana is happy with their performance, because it’s one of those events where the
important thing is taking part. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a fierce competitive edge to the proceedings - although there was hardly a gust of wind, the 51st Barcolana was fought out in the same spirit as an America’s Cup with the prize for last place go to a crew of dentists from Serbia, Montenegro and Italy on board the 5-foot xXeinos. Nobody was put off by the calm weather, all the crews on board the 2,015 yachts taking part gave their best. From the smallest to the largest yachts, the simplest to the most technically advanced, all together at the start, creating a spectacle enjoyed by the whole of Trieste. The 51st Barcolana had its victor - Way of Life, owned by the Slovenian Gašper Vinčec. Helped by a fantastic start, the yacht defeated an epic calm and all the race favourites to finish with a time of 1h 54’10’’. row, re-establishing its presence in the sailing world. The prestigious setting of the Piazza Unità d’Italia hosted the Villaggio della Barcolana, providing a venue for the Jaguar Land Rover lounge and the new Discovery Sport, the “Go Anywhere” SUV, towing a historic Rivarama from 1975 (Riva is a Ferretti Group brand with which Jaguar Land Rover has had close links for some years), while several Jaguar I-PACE cars, embodiments of sustainable e-mobility were available for the Barcolana’s pick-up service. Finally, it was really the only suitable place to celebrate the company’s relationship with Vittorio Bissaro, sail yachtsman and Italian Olympic athlete, now also ambassador for Land Rover. The promising sportsman, who shares a great deal of DNA with the British brand, will help promote the “Land Rover Road to Barcolana 2020” project, which will also involve young sailing talent, and “Barcolana Junior”, an initiative for the youngest kids. 168
