A NEW

Aston Martin and James Bond: a legendary duo. Introducing the new Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Special Edition. Just 50 will be made to celebrate the 50th anniversary of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service which starred the DBS coupÊ. A super car with the same olive green livery as its predecessor but a gloriously aggressive modern heart

T

he colour may mean little or nothing to many. But to others it opened up a dream world. In fact, that distinguished olive green with a slight goldish hue references the livery of a somewhat special Aston Martin at the end of the 1969s. The car

that flanked Bond on his sixth screen outing in 007: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Unfortunately, in the eyes of both public and critics alike, it was the wrong Bond behind the wheel of the wrong Aston Martin. The Bond in question was George Lazenby whose performance was overshadowed by the iconic Sean Connery. The car was a DBS coupé, bulkier than its predecessor, the utterly timeless DB5 coupé. It was no coincidence that it was the first and last appearance of both in the blockbuster series. The Bond film celebrates its half-century anniversary in 2019, having hit the cinemas on December 18 1969, 50 years during which things have changed for both the film and the DBS coupé with the car in particular becoming one of the most sought-after classic GTs of our time. Now, to celebrate the film’s 50th anniversary and their model’s cameo, the boffins at Aston Martin’s HQ in Gaydon have come up with a real gem: a special limited edition of 50 of the DBS Superleggera, the first of which will be delivered to their owners at the end of this year. An unexpected homage but not a complete first as it was preceded by the special “DB9 GT Bond Edition” and the “Goldfinger DB5 Continuation” unveiled in 2015 and 2018 respectively. Because James Bond always guarantees a hit and his

connection with Aston Martin is by far one of the most enduring and iconic in cinema history. The current, hugely successful On Her Majesty’s Secret Service DBS Superleggera Special Edition features the OHMSS badge on its side air intakes on the front wheel arches, door sills and upholstery. But it is its Olive Green livery that gives it away. In addition, of course, to a masculine line that instantly won it the “brute in a suit” moniker. A title backed up by first-rate running gear as befits a consummate Super GT, starting with a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 engine that develops 725 horses at 6,500 rpm and 900 Nm. A sophisticated exhaust system with active valves and quad tail pipes delivers a powerful soundtrack that is particularly commanding in more aggressive driving modes. Last but very far from least, owners can opt for a bespoke-designed drinks case for the boot which fits two bottles of and four champagne flutes. A deliciously perfect finishing touch for a glorious Bond-inspired car.
